April is Autism Month Signs & Symptoms to Watch For:

A

s a parent, you never want to believe that your precious bundle has a problem. But when it comes to autism, catching it early—ideally by the age of eighteen months— makes a huge difference. The younger your child, the greater the impact of treatment on symptoms of autism. If autism is caught in infancy, treatment can take full advantage of the young brain’s remarkable plasticity. Although autism is hard to diagnose before 24 months, symptoms often surface between 12 and 18 months. If signs are detected by 18 months of age, intensive treatment may help to rewire the brain and reverse the symptoms. The earliest signs of autism involve the absence of normal behaviors— not the presence of abnormal ones—so they can be tough to spot. In some cases, the earliest symptoms of autism are even misinterpreted as signs of a “good baby,” since the infant may seem quiet, independent, and undemanding. However, you can catch warning signs early if you know what to look for.

Early signs of autism in babies and toddlers

• Doesn’t make eye contact (e.g. look at you when being fed). • Doesn't smile when smiled at. • Doesn't respond to his or her name or to the sound of a familiar voice. • Doesn’t follow objects visually. • Doesn't point or wave goodbye or use other gestures to communicate. • Doesn’t follow the gesture when you point things out. • Doesn’t make noises to get your attention. • Doesn’t initiate or respond to cuddling. • Doesn’t imitate your movements and facial expressions. • Doesn’t reach out to be picked up. • Doesn’t play with other people or share interest and enjoyment. • Doesn’t ask for help or make other basic requests.

The following delays warrant an immediate evaluation by your child’s pediatrician. • By 6 months: No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions. • By 9 months: No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions. • By 12 months: Lack of response to name. • By 12 months: No babbling or “baby talk.” • By 12 months: No back-and-forth gestures, such as pointing, showing, reaching, or waving. • By 16 months: No spoken words. • By 24 months: No meaningful two-word phrases that don’t involve imitating or repeating. Learning About Autism

A

utism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. This disorder affects 1 in 88 children. My brother is 1 of those 88. He opened my eyes. Growing up with a brother on the autism spectrum was hard. It was hard because he didn’t get it. It was hard because I couldn’t understand him. It was hard because we could communicate with him at the bare minimum. It was hard because some days, I just wanted him to be “normal”. It was even harder because he had no friends. He opened my eyes.

As I got older, I was able to comprehend his situation better. I learned to embrace his weirdness and be better understanding when he insisted we cut off the tags to his shirt because he couldn’t stand the way they felt on his neck. I saw that having no friends meant entertaining himself by cutting a hole in the carpet the size of a fist and shoving toys underneath. He opened my eyes. Cody is a one of a kind guy. He wears his socks half way up his calves and insists on always wearing a hat. He can tell you what kind of spiders are poisonous and which ones you can smash with your hand. He almost always knows the weather in at least five states. Being on the autism spectrum isn’t something these kids, or adults, choose. As a community, I urge you to research and learn more about these amazing people who want to live and love just like the rest us. Open your eyes.

April is Autism Awareness Month - for more information on signs and symptoms see page 18.

Summer Camp Etiquette The excitement is thick in the air. Your baby is heading off to summer camp for an entire week! The very idea of having a roommate(s) might make them anxious, but it can be a good thing. Help prepare your child by discussing these etiquette guidelines:

Welcome 2014 Campers!

1. Respect the other person's space. 2. Clean up your own messes.

3. Respect need for quiet time.

4. Don't get your feelings hurt. Being roommates doesn't mean you have to be best friends. If your roommate makes plans without including you, accept that he/ she might have other pals they enjoy hanging out with. Besides, if you have a positive attitude, you are likely to The School of Etiquette, Leadership and be included more often. Image Development

Kids, Meet Vegetables Fruits and veggies are packed with healthy nutrients that are important for children’s health and development. It can be tough to get kids to try new foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Try these tips from the High Five Children’s Health Collaborative to get your little ones excited about healthy foods. Be A Role Model: Frequently say “I love tomatoes” and eat fruits and vegetables around your kids to set a good example. Try One Bite: Try a new fruit or vegetable at each meal. Requiring one bite will make new foods less scary. If they don’t like it, that’s fine. It may take three or more meals before getting used to new tastes. Eat Healthy Snacks: Keep “grab and go” snacks with fresh vegetables and fruits waiting in the refrigerator to encourage nutritious snacking. Make It Fun: Veggies and fruits can be weird. Use your imagination. Call broccoli “little trees” or make faces on plates using the ingredients as features. Take Kids Shopping: Allow children to have a choice. Let them pick out a new fruit or vegetable at the grocery store or ask which one they want for dinner. Get Kids Cooking: Kids are more likely to try something they helped prepare. Allow kids to help with age appropriate activities like mashing, whisking, mixing and pouring. The High Five Children’s Health Collaborative—powered by the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health—is a group dedicated to fighting childhood obesity in Idaho. Learn more about them, access healthy recipes, activities and daily tips at HighFiveIdaho.org
