How is Your Fuel-Efficiency? H
ave you ever stopped to compare your body to an automobile? Picture it: Your metabolism is the engine & food is the fuel…your body burns food like your car burns gasoline. Contrary to how we want our automobiles to operate, most of us want our bodies to burn more fuel. If you are looking to lose weight, you should strive to get the worst possible gas mileage. So how fuel-efficient are you? Consider the following: If you wanted to get bad mileage in your car what would you do? 3 take it on frequent, short trips 3 drive fast 3 vary your speed greatly (avoid cruising at a steady speed) 3 go uphill 3 add weight/ carry a heavy load To decrease your fuel-efficiency, apply these principles to your lifestyle. The following are some suggestions of how to burn more fuel: 1. Incorporate more movement into your daily life. Every little thing counts! Stand rather than sitting, walk the long way around, take the stairs, pace while on the phone. Taken in isolation, they seem trivial…but all of these little things add up. It’s comparable to the little trips around town in your car: collectively they end up draining your gas tank. An extra 10 calories burned per day results in a pound of weight loss over the course of a year.
2. Burn fat & calories faster by doing intervals. In other words, alternate the intensity of your exercise rather than sticking with a steady state. A change in intensity can include a change of resistance, speed, or incline. For example, when riding a bike, pedal at a moderate pace for one minute, then push yourself to pedal HARD for about 30 seconds. Recover by going back to your initial pace and then repeat this cycle until you have reached your desired workout time. Research has repeatedly confirmed that you can burn more calories in less time by utilizing this method. 3. To maximize your workout time, don’t rest between exercises. Alternate different moves and go quickly from one to another. For example, do a chest exercise and go immediately into a triceps exercise, then repeat. Never let your engine shut down! Working out in this manner gets you more caloric bang for your buck because you keep your heart rate up while doing resistance training. 4. Resist the pitfall of all or nothing thinking when it comes to physical activity. Accept that you may not have time for a full workout, but half a workout will serve you better than no workout! Sneak in exercise in small spurts. Don’t have an hour? Three or four shorter sessions will be every bit as effective as one longer workout…it may be even more effective. Again, think of your automobile: does running your errands in separate trips burn less fuel? Absolutely not…every little trip drains the tank!
