What is Montessori?
T
he Montessori Method is a hundred year old educational model, invented by Dr. Maria Montessori. The method has been validated by modern brain research and other educational research. The method nurtures the child’s intrinsic desire to learn. The result is a child who has the ability to be self-directed, compassionate, creative, and a problemsolving member of the community. Children in Montessori schools learn in non-competitive multi-aged classrooms. The youngest children observe their older peers succeeding at both academic and daily living skills. The older students have the gift of leadership and experience first-hand the satisfaction of being a role model and teaching what they have mastered. Children in Montessori schools learn by doing. Dr. Montessori believed that “the hand is the teacher” and that children learn best through experience. Her materials provide an opportunity to perform tasks that develop fine and gross motor skills and nurture the child’s natural curiosity for language and mathematics. Children are free to choose from a variety of activities they have been introduced to and may repeat the work as many times as desired. This fosters the joy of learning. The rich
learning environment leads to the ability to read, write, and establish a solid mathematical foundation during the early years. Montessori teachers are trained to “follow the child” and plan daily living, sensorial, language, mathematical, and cultural topics according to the readiness of the children. A Montessori student receives individual or small group lessons customized to his or her curiosity and developmental plane. Montessori teachers present lessons in a way that develops a sense of wonder and awe for the content. In addition to academics, Montessori seeks to give children a sense of their responsibility to mankind. Dr. Montessori said, “An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking: it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to times in which they live.” She was one of the strongest child advocates in history and believed in the best for the youngest. Montessori schools continue this mission today, to help children become happy, contributing adults who improve the world they inherit. By Maria Kilgo, M.Ed. AMS certified Montessori teacher, Lakewood Montessori, Boise, Idaho

Early Childhood: Making or Breaking Your kid’s eating HaBits You provide a healthy and safe environment for your children. Does your child care provider offer the same? One in three Idaho children are overweight or obese, which puts them at risk of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, asthma and social discrimination. Child care providers are either a gateway or barrier to childhood obesity. Because Idaho does not regulate meals or activities for childcare providers, it’s essential for parents to do their research. Investigate these four areas to see if your child care provider offers a healthy habitat for your little ones: Physical Activity: Promote frequent short, fun bursts of play throughout the day. Ideally this would equal about two hours of physical activity throughout the day, including outside play when possible. Screen Time: No screen time for children under two years. For children older than two, limit screen time to no more than 30 minutes per week during child care, and no more than two hours of quality screen time per day at home. Food: Serve fruits and vegetable at every meal, eat meals family-style whenever possible and don’t serve fried foods. Beverages: Provide access to water during meals and throughout the day and don’t serve sugary drinks. Serve low-fat milk for children over the age of two. Parents can learn more about healthy child care programs and how to fight childhood obesity through The Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children and the High Five Children’s Health Collaborative.
