PVR buys Cinemax for 395 cr, Becomes India's Largest Multiplex Chain
Promoters of Cinemax have signed a pact to sell their entire 69.27 percent stake to PVR for a consideration for 395 crore or 203.65 per share, both the companies informed the stock exchanges. The Board also approved purchase of up to 26 percent stake of Cinemax India from the public shareholders pursuant to an open offer under the SEBI (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeovers) Regulations, 2011. Reacting to the news, shares of Cinemax rose 5 percent to 184.25 and those of PVR jumped 14 percent to more than 11 percent to 263. However, previous media reports had pegged the deal at 500 crore. PVR will make the acquisition through Cine Hospitality Private Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. PVR will also make an open offer to the shareholders of Cinemax to buy up to 26 percent more, PVR said in its notice. The share purchase would make PVR India's largest multiplex. PVR currently has around 210 screens. Acquiring Cinemax, which operates 39 properties, with 138 screens, will help PVR scale up and become the largest multiplex company in India. According to a CNBC-TV18 report, even Imax is looking to expand its existing contract with PVR. Imax hopes to open theatres in alliance with PVR in Mumbai and Delhi soon, and stands to benefit from the PVRCinemax deal too.

It is the first feature film to be shot at 48 frames/ second, double the usual 24 frames/ second that is traditionally used for all cinema. Galalite Screens extends global reach with expansion of production plant in Germany Galalite Screens manufacturers of cinema screens, announced its plans to expand operations in Germany. The investments will double Galalite's capacity for making Prism3D and Digilite screens. The facility in Germany will be fully operational by mid-2013. The facility will allow Galalite screens to serve better local demand for good quality screens by providing shorter lead times for customers in nearby states as well as lower the cost of shipping screens from factory to final location. "With the explosion of the 3D films arriving in cinemas worldwide, orders for our screens have risen significantly," says Shabbir Galabhaiwala, Owner, GTC Industries. "In order to meet that demand and speed customer deliveries, we made the strategic decision to open a facility in Germany." The facility was an existing screencoating facility that Galalite has joined hands with. It is one of the first coating plants, and the technology is state-of-the-art. Qube Cinema XP-I Server and Xi 4K Integrated Media Block (IMB) Achieve DCI Compliance Qube Cinema announced that it's XP-I digital cinema server and Xi 4K Integrated Media Block (IMB) have passed the DCI Compliance Test Plan (CTP). The high performance, security and reliability of the XP-I and Xi IMB have been confirmed by these tests. This server-IMB combination accommodates 4K resolution and is the ultimate setup for high frame rate (HFR) exhibition, making it essential for today's digital cinema. The DCI compliance testing was conducted by CineCert. To pass the CTP, the Qube XP-I streamed 2K and 4K DCP content to the Xi IMB embedded in a Barco DP4K-32B DCIcompliant projector. The Qube XP-I server now joins the Qube XP-D server, which achieved DCI certification earlier in 2012. "The performance and dependability of Qube servers and the Xi 4K IMB that exhibitors have come to expect has been validated," said Rajesh Ramachandran, president and CTO of Qube Cinema. "Achieving DCI compliance reinforces our commitment to provide postproduction facilities and exhibitors with the means of creating and showing the best 4K and HFR content." The XP-I server is capable of streaming up to 1 Gbps of data from a single DCP to two synchronized Xi 4K IMBs imbedded in two projectors for pristine 4K 3D cinema at up to 60 fps (30 fps per eye) and in 2K 3D at up to 240 fps (120 fps per eye). The XP-I streams data through a dual Gigabit Ethernet interface to the Ethernet-based Xi 4K IMB, ensuring that there is no limitation on the distance between the server and projector. The Xi 4K IMB is installed in numerous commercial locations worldwide with DLP Cinema projectors from all of the TI OEMs
and supports HD, 2K, 4K and 3D content in DCI-compliant formats. The modularized third-generation Qube XP software gives a common user experience for setup, operation and maintenance of both the XP-I and XP-D servers. This allows XP-D users to upgrade easily to the XP-I and Xi IMB to accommodate 4K resolution and higher frame rates. With their high bit rate throughput and unique ability to work transparently with dual projectors, the XP-I server and Xi 4K IMB are also ideal for giant screen exhibition.
Subhash Ghai's New Multiplex in Gulbarga
Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts Ltd has started a new multiplex in Gulbarga under the brand name Mukta A2 Cinemas. The multiplex opened with Salman Khan's film Dabangg 2 on December 22. The three-screen multiplex has 1252 seats and a 2K Digital with 3D projection system which is first of its kind in Gulberga. It also boasts of hitech dolby digital surround sound. After Gulberga, Mukta Arts Limited is all set to launch another multiplex in Vishakhapatnam, Sangli, Raipur, Aurangabad and Bhopal. Negotiations are also going on for locations such as Mumbai, Thane, Panvel and Gurgaon. This will add around 30 screens to the existing 15 screens.

Kai Po Che to Premiere at Berlin Film Festival Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che has been selected for a world premiere at the prestigious Berlinale aka Berlin Film Festival. The film starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav, Amit Sadh and Amrita Puri is a story of friendship and is based on Chetan Bhagat's best-selling novel '3 Mistakes Of My Life'.

Nikhil Advani's animation flick Delhi Safari, which released recently to rave reviews, has now added yet another feather in its cap. The English version of the film has been shortlisted for consideration in the Best Animated Feature Film category for the 85th Annual Academy Awards.
One of the highly successful and most talked about film of this year, Pen India Pvt. Ltd and Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani, has been winning accolades one after the other. Recently, during the South Asian Rising Star Film Awards at New York, USA, Kahaani won the award for Best Original Screenplay. Sujoy got the award for the Best Screenplay amongst nominees like Anurag Kashyap for Gangs Of Wasseypur, Akshat Verma forDelhi Belly, Juhi Chaturvedi for Vicky Donor and Gurvinder Singh for Alms Of The Blind Horse. "I am really happy and humbled by the response that Kahaani has garnered since its release. Kahaani has been able to succeed because of the audience and their faith in the film.
