Feel the Movement of Sound!

YRF Studios are constantly looking to stay ahead of the game and invest in its facilities and that is the reason the Film Mix studio has been fitted with Dolby's revolutionary new audio playback technology "Dolby Atmos". This audio playback system is the most innovative development in the history of Cinema sound and gives the sound creation team unprecedented control of placement and movement of sound for film. It also gives the audience the most immersive experience. The YRF Film Mix theatre is the biggest Re-recording studio in Mumbai and is installed with 2k Digital Projection system. The equipments being used at the Film Mix are the best possible in the audio industry, at par with the rest of the world. And Chak De India, Kites, New York, Kai Po Che and now Dhoom 3 to name a few as Re-recording Engineer/ Mixer. TW – How do you describe Sound in cinemas with respect to the visual? AM – Sound and Visual are the two integral parts of cinema, one cannot be isolated from the other and they have to compliment each other. The failure of one causes imbalance to the film as a whole. For the film to be visually and sound perfect the co-ordination of both has to be apt. TW – What are the main aspects you see in the sound and visual sync when re-recording?

AM – Sound works as an immersive experience, so if the sound can work and compliment the visual, captivate the audience with that visual, while still retain the essence of the movie, that is the main aspect I keep in mind while re-recording. The new Dolby Atmos format is the most innovative format Dolby has come up with. With this technology you can dramatize the scene and make it much more. Often the visuals of the movie portray one thing, while the sound says something else entirely. To achieve the perfect combination of the two is one of the main challenges faced during the sync.

AM – We have to work with respect to the format, keeping in mind the shortcomings and advantages of the same and making sure the sound works best for the audience. Ideally, we keep all the tracks open namely the Dialogues, Background score, Songs and Sound Effects. We do the base mix in one main format and accordingly convert to other formats. We now do Dolby Atmos as the primary format and once the Atmos mix is done, then we convert it to the Imax format, Dolby 7.1 and Dolby 5.1.

Dolby Atmos can be compared to the impact of 3D visual, it is the same with the sound. You can hear each and every sound move. TW – How was your experience first time listening to Dolby Atmos? AM – I enjoyed the movement of the sound, it gives the re-recording engineer complete liberty of placing the sound the way he wants it to be. It is a dream comes true for

TW – Which movie as per you is best recorded on the given format in both Bollywood and Hollywood? AM – “Life of Pi” is one of the finest works done with Dolby Atmos and in India we still need to learn a lot. re-recording engineers. Now if we want to play around with the sound and enhance the experience of the audience in to a particular scene, one can do that without any technical limitation. Dolby Atmos is a new sound format and it will take sound mixing to the next level. For example, earlier if you created a rain effect, you could feel the sound coming from the sides, but with Dolby Atmos you can feel the rain from the top. Creating a more realistic natural ambience is now possible with Dolby Atmos. TW – What was the commercial plan of YRF Studios to choose Dolby Atoms? AM – YRF is always in the forefront with the new technology that comes in, and is ready to invest into the studios. For YRF studios filmmaking is a passion and they are always striving to give the audience the best experience.

TW – How do you think the film exhibitors will welcome this new format? AM – Initially, all are apprehensive of accepting something new, but according to me, this is the format to stay and eventually they will come around. Exhibitors have already

started investing in Dolby Atmos and gradually the number will increase. When we give exhibitors good content they will be inspired to accept the new format. TW – What is the future innovation of cinema sound and re-recording?
