Dhanya Theatre Introduces Barco Auro 11.1 More and more theatres in India are discovering the benefits of high-end sound platforms, like Auro 11.1 by Barco, to differentiate themselves from the competition. Next up is the new Dhanya Theatre from the Dhanya & Remya theatre complex located in the town of Kollam and owned by the Muthoottu Mini Theatres group. In August the theatre opened its first Auro 11.1 equipped facility. Being the first to install this sound system in India's Kerala region, the Dhanya Theatre lives up to its promise to consistently offer its audience the best possible cinema experience. Traditionally, India has always been a major regional center for film, supported by a vast film-going public and a movie industry that ranks amongst the largest in the world. As a consequence, competition between multiplex cinemas is fierce. Providing audiences with an immersive auditory experience in addition to crisp clear images has proven to be a powerful tool for differentiation. "With Auro 11.1, we are aiming to reach the level of perfection in sound that we'd already achieved in imaging," says Mr. Abel Garamhegyi, Vice-President Sales-MEAI and Region Managing Director at Barco India. "The reason for this is that
people are driven by both sound and pictures, so we need both to create a total impression. And it works: Bookings for Auro 11.1 halls are much higher than the industry standard 5.1." Always looking for ways to improve the movie going experience of Dhanya & Remya Theatres, Mr. Roy M. Mathew, Managing Director at Muthoottu Mini Theatres, instructed sound engineer Mr. Baburaj to investigate new sound and projections systems that could be installed in the new theatre complex in Kollam. In Chennai, Mr. Baburaj visited GM Audio and an Auro Theatre to witness the Indian
blockbuster Vishwaroopam in Auro 11.1. "I was astonished by the immersive experience that ensued," says Mr. Baburaj. "It didn't take long to realize that this platform could give us the best possible performance at an affordable price. On top of that, it is easy to use and the implementation can happen really quick, without any show losses." Soon after the demo, Mr. Mathew contacted the people at GM Audio again to conclude the contract and install Auro 11.1 sound solution at the Dhanya Theatre in Kollam. By using a minimum number of speakers to create a 3D sound experience, Auro 11.1 by Barco proves to be a cost-friendly solution as well. "GM Audio has installed Auro 11.1 at more than 10 cinemas so far," Mr. Giri added. "In many cases the original layer of speakers can be reused and the additional surround speakers can be wired in groups instead of independently. As a result, the additional cost is kept low while, at the same time, reflective sounds can resonate in a bigger area of the auditorium. Furthermore, the added height and overhead layers enable sound mixers to move objects around in space, thus creating a life like acoustic experience."

Manasa Theatre Chooses Barco Auro 11.1 to Create Ultimate Movie Experience Manasa Theatre, has recently installed Auro 11.1 by Barco immersive sound platform in its UltraScreen auditorium. Already an institution in India's progressive cinema sector, the theatre is taking the lead in the current trend of choosing state-of-the-art technology to offer the best possible cinema experience. By investing in Auro 11.1 by Barco, Manasa Theatre differentiates itself by offering an unmatched movie experience driven by crisp clear images and immersive sound. Active in the exhibition field for over 50 years, Manasa Theatre has a reputation for providing the best possible cinema experience to its visitors, through great images, comfort and sound. A while ago, the pioneering multiplex overhauled one of its theatres to deliver sharp and crystal clear images. In order to complete the immersive experience of the audience, the theatre's management decided to install Barco's revolutionary Auro 11.1 sound system. "Human beings are stimulated by both sound and pictures," says Abel Garamhegyi, Managing Director at Barco India. "That's why, at Barco, we strive for perfection in both, in order to create a complete and immersive movie experience. With Auro 11.1,
we have managed to achieve maximum results in immersive sound at an affordable price. Why the investment in Auro? "The figures don't lie: ticket office results have shown that bookings for films screened in Barco Auro 11.1 are much higher than the standard 5.1," says Garamhegyi. "This proves that it can be a very powerful tool to make the difference in an increasingly competitive market." For Manasa Theatre, this was the very reason for contacting G.M. Audio along with Mr. Sails Raj, Sound Engineer and installing the revolutionary sound platform. "As a technology pioneer, we want to make sure that the Bangalore crowd always gets the best possible experience while watching blockbusters in our theatre," says Janardhan Reddy, Managing Director at Manasa Bangalore. "So, naturally, we were very pleased with Auro 11.1. Adding a height layer and an overhead layer to the traditional surround sound layer enables studio sound mixers to move objects around in space, really create a lifelike, acoustic experience. Moreover, the system is fully compatible with our existing audio equipment and current workflows. We are very impressed with the results!"

Sridevi to Team up with Meryl Streep Just when the jury is out on which Indian film goes to the Oscars this year, comes the news that could possibly clinch the matter in favour of Gauri Shinde's English Vinglish. Apparently, Meryl Streep has seen this highly influential film about a Maharashtrian woman struggling with the English language in America and has given her go-ahead to a film with the English Vinglish heroine Sridevi. The film entitled Cowboys & Indians is to be directed by American superstar Robert Redford's daughter Amy Redford.
Interestingly, Sridevi has appointed no casting agent in the US. Apparently, both Amy and Meryl have shown a keen interest in this film solely on the basis of Sridevi's sterling performance in English Vinglish. And now the script awaits the approval of Sridevi's elder daughter

The film earlier won the National award for Best Feature Film in Gujarati. Speaking on the decision on Saturday evening the head of the jury for the Oscar selection, filmmaker Gautam Ghose said, "We chose this wonderful Gujarati film The Good Road. There were 16 members in the jury. They were given the task of sifting through all the entries. A long 5-hour discussion followed before The Good Road was chosen. The Film Federation Of India has sent a request to the Academy Awards asking that we be allowed to send several Oscar entries per year as we are such a large cinema-making country. So many diverse kinds of films are being made in India. We make 1500 films. The Tamil film industry is itself bigger than the Korean cinema. Why should we send only 1 film to the Oscars? We cannot dance only to their tune."

TW – How important is digital content delivery for cinemas?
cinemas equipped with digital delivery equipment.
SS – It is very important because digital content and digital content delivery are in an irreversible trend. For several years studios have already been transitioning from film print to digital format. A corresponding transition has been underway among exhibitors who have traded in their 35mm projection systems for digital projection systems. Supply of the 35mm film format is becoming less and less, hence cinemas need to be digitalized in order to maintain their businesses, as studios may increasingly opt to distribute their movies in digital but not in 35mm. With the increase in digital format, this means a wider variety of film content in the digital format will be available for rental bookings by
According to a third party market research company, 89,341 cinema screens were digitized globally up through the end of 2012, reflecting a growth rate of 40 per cent over the previous year. At end of the first quarter 2013, the d-screen count had risen to 94,638. It is expected that 20,000 screens will be digitized during 2013, accounting for digitization of nearly 90% of all screens in the world.

TW – Tell us about the alternative content and its future? SS – Apart from featuring movies, cinemas are exploring more business opportunities by delivering alternative content such as live concerts, sporting events, ballet,
musicals, speeches, religious events, opera, by satellite or network live streaming on big screens. In addition, alternative content may be delivered via Blu-ray Disc/DVDs via HDMI, 3GSDI. According to a third party market research company, global alternative content revenues reached over US$400mn in 2012, an increase of 100% since 2010. Taking the UK as an example, there were 109 alternative content events screened in cinemas in 2011 and the New York-based opera house, the Metropolitan Opera, now broadcasts its shows to more than 1,000 screens in more than 40 countries around the world. TW – Tell us about one big technological change that has happened recently on content delivery? How would you describe the technological change that has evolved for
cinema content distribution over the years? SS – Cinema content distribution has changed from historical distribution of film movies to that of digital movies by storage of content on hard drives, content delivery over the internet and dedicated satellite links e.t.c. With continuous technological development, not only can we distribute the digital movies physically but we can also do so via virtual private networks. TW – What is the screen count of GDC servers worldwide and what is the market share of GDC in the segment? SS – According to a third party market research company, GDC's global market shares by incremental installations increased from 8% in 2009 to 35% in Q1 2013, while that of Asia-Pacific increased from 30% in 2009 to 54% in Q1 2013. the need for an external file server and comes with SMS software. It is proved to work seamlessly with the new, cost effective and highlyreliable content storage solution the PSD-3000-P, which can be mounted on projectors easily with its lightweight feature. The SX-3000 adopts an ethernet connection which significantly simplifies theatre operations and can connect up to 3 units of PSD-3000-P via eSATA that can support 9TB storage in total. The SX-3000 supports high frame rate content in 2D and 3D, 2K and 4K resolution, as well as alternative content that supports HDMI input, 3G-SDI input and network live streaming. It's always easy to switch between HDMI and DCP playback which is especially well received by those independent theatres commonly using blu-ray devices in their daily operations. TW – Is the SX-3000 compatible with all the latest and future projectors?
SS – 3D audio effect with surround sound technique is probably one of the upcoming innovations. Surround sound is a technique for enriching the sound reproduction quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the listener, providing sound from a 360° radius.
SS – The SX-3000 is compatible with world-renowned DLP Cinema projectors including Barco, NEC and Christie projectors.
Laser projection is another exciting innovation coming around the corner so as to stretch the boundaries of digital cinema projection. With the expected future adoption of laser projection technology in commercial cinema projection, the general public will be able to enjoy compelling and immersive 3D images delivered at light levels normally only possible for 2D movies.
SS – GDC products such as the SX3000/ DCI-3000 support high frame rate content in 2D and 3D and also 4K image resolution. We went through the testing procedures set out by the DCI and demonstrated compliance with the Digital Cinema System Specification to ensure a high level of technical performance, reliability and quality control of all our DCI compliant products. TW – Can you explain the importance of RAID 5 technology in the PSD-3000? SS – With RAID 5 technology, the PSD-3000 can remain operational in the event of a single drive failure and we can simply renew the damaged hard disk to resume its normal operation which keeps exhibitors away from storage hassle. TW – How is the Theatre Management System (TMS-1000) supporting cinema theaters? It is a comprehensive solution managing user security, content, show playlist and scheduling, error and screen control. The TMS-1000 allows exhibitors to automate and streamline the entire theatre operation at their fingertips.
