Dhanya Theatre Introduces Barco Auro 11.1 More and more theatres in India are discovering the benefits of high-end sound platforms, like Auro 11.1 by Barco, to differentiate themselves from the competition. Next up is the new Dhanya Theatre from the Dhanya & Remya theatre complex located in the town of Kollam and owned by the Muthoottu Mini Theatres group. In August the theatre opened its first Auro 11.1 equipped facility. Being the first to install this sound system in India's Kerala region, the Dhanya Theatre lives up to its promise to consistently offer its audience the best possible cinema experience. Always looking for ways to improve the movie going experience of Dhanya & Remya Theatres, Mr. Roy M. Mathew, Managing Director at Muthoottu Mini Theatres, instructed sound engineer Mr. Baburaj to investigate new sound and projections systems that could be installed in the new theatre complex in Kollam. In Chennai, Mr. Baburaj visited GM Audio and an Auro Theatre to witness the Indian

blockbuster Vishwaroopam in Auro 11.1. "I was astonished by the immersive experience that ensued," says Mr. Baburaj. "It didn't take long to realize that this platform could give us the best possible performance at an affordable price. On top of that, it is easy to use and the implementation can happen really quick, without any show losses." Soon after the demo, Mr. Mathew contacted the people at GM Audio again to conclude the contract and install Auro 11.1 sound solution at the Dhanya Theatre in Kollam. By using a minimum number of speakers to create a 3D sound experience, Auro 11.1 by Barco proves to be a cost-friendly solution as well. "GM Audio has installed Auro 11.1 at more than 10 cinemas so far," Mr. Giri added. "In many cases the original layer of speakers can be reused and the additional surround speakers can be wired in groups instead of independently. As a result, the additional cost is kept low while, at the same time, reflective sounds can resonate in a bigger area of the auditorium. Furthermore, the added height and overhead layers enable sound mixers to move objects around in space, thus creating a life like acoustic experience."

Mumbai Film Festival to Launch 'India Project Room' The Mumbai Film Festival has announced a new initiative as part of the Mumbai Film Mart. Inox Rebrands Fame; to Add 47 Screens this Year Multiplex operator Inox Leisure announced that it will add about 45-47 new screens this year across cities like Gurgaon, Noida, Lucknow and Raipur besides rebranding the 'Fame' cinema halls to become one of the largest film exhibition companies in the country. In 2010, Inox had acquired 43.28 per cent promoter stake in Fame India for 44 crore. Under the rebranding exercise, 88 screens across 24 Fame properties will be added to the Inox brand. With its own 197 screens across 49 properties, Inox will now have 284 screens in 73 properties. "India is under-screened with 10 screens for one million people. The ratio is very different in Europe and US, where the numbers are much higher. Inox has been on a steady expansion mode through organic and inorganic routes. "Through this rebranding, we will continue to offer the best movie-going experience to consumers said," Inox Leisure CEO Alok Tandon. This is the second time Inox is undertaking such a rebranding exercise. A subsidiary of Gujarat Fluorochemicals, Inox had acquired 89 Cinemas promoted by Calcutta Cine Pvt Ltd in 2006. Later, 89 Cinemas was rebranded Inox Swabhumi. Talking about further expansion, he said the company is in the process of adding about 47 screens this year. "Work is underway on a lot of sites. In the next few months, hopefully within this fiscal, we expect to add 45-47 screens across cities like Jaipur, Kolkata, Vizag, Lucknow, Gurgaon and Greater Noida." The investment per screen could range between 2 crore and 2.5 crore and higher depending on the property, he said. The BSE-listed Inox has also invested in upgrading some of the Fam theatres. Harman Professional Hosts Sambandh 2013 Business Conference in Bangalore Continuing its commitment to India's pro audio market, Harman Professional recently hosted its Sambandh 2013 business conference at the ITC Gardenia hotel in Bangalore, India. Sambandh 2013 brought the Harman Professional India team together with other key Harman executives from around the world to determine business and marketing strategies, assess growth opportunities, participate in product education seminars and outline the company's direction in the region. Overall, the event had over 150 attendees including dealers, leading system integrators, consultants, sound rental companies, and end customers. The Gala Night, on day one of the event, featured an integrated sound and light display with an introduction by Illuminati, India's leading UV Light Troupe, highlighting the arrival of Martin Professional in India. This was followed by a performance from AKG endorsee and world-renowned percussionist, Sivamani, along with pianist Stephen Devassey, vocalist Runa Rizvi, and Rajesh Vaidhya on sitar. Trends in Digital Content Delivery

Sachin Shetty has over ten years of experience in the field of cinema exhibition across the entire gamut of exhibition. He was actively involved in the core management team of Big Cinemas (previously known as Adlabs) in various roles catapulting its growth from its first multiplex in Mumbai to becoming one of the leading cinema chains in India. Currently as Country Head he is spearheading the digital cinema implementation plan for GDC Tech in India. He is ably supported by a team of ten technical professionals who collectively have more than 25 years of experience between them, in the field of cinema exhibition. The team operates strategically across various cities in India, to ensure that necessary support and training are provided to clients, keeping downtime at bare minimum.

TW – How important is digital content delivery for cinemas?

SS – It is very important because digital content and digital content delivery are in an irreversible trend. For several years studios have already been transitioning from film print to digital format. A corresponding transition has been underway among exhibitors who have traded in their 35mm projection systems for digital projection systems. Supply of the 35mm film format is becoming less and less, hence cinemas need to be digitalized in order to maintain their businesses, as studios may increasingly opt to distribute their movies in digital but not in 35mm. With the increase in digital format, this means a wider variety of film content in the digital format will be available for rental bookings by

TW – Tell us about the alternative content and its future? SS – Apart from featuring movies, cinemas are exploring more business opportunities by delivering alternative content such as live concerts, sporting events, ballet,

musicals, speeches, religious events, opera, by satellite or network live streaming on big screens. In addition, alternative content may be delivered via Blu-ray Disc/DVDs via HDMI, 3GSDI. According to a third party market research company, global alternative content revenues reached over US$400mn in 2012, an increase of 100% since 2010. Taking the UK as an example, there were 109 alternative content events screened in cinemas in 2011 and the New York-based opera house, the Metropolitan Opera, now broadcasts its shows to more than 1,000 screens in more than 40 countries around the world. TW – Tell us about one big technological change that has happened recently on content delivery? How would you describe the technological change that has evolved for

SS – Cinema content distribution has changed from historical distribution of film movies to that of digital movies by storage of content on hard drives, content delivery over the internet and dedicated satellite links e.t.c. With continuous technological development, not only can we distribute the digital movies physically but we can also do so via virtual private networks. TW – What is the screen count of GDC servers worldwide and what is the market share of GDC in the segment? SS – According to a third party market research company, GDC's global market shares by incremental installations increased from 8% in 2009 to 35% in Q1 2013, while that of Asia-Pacific increased from 30% in 2009 to 54% in Q1 2013. SS – 3D audio effect with surround sound technique is probably one of the upcoming innovations. Surround sound is a technique for enriching the sound reproduction quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the listener, providing sound from a 360° radius.

SS – The SX-3000 is compatible with world-renowned DLP Cinema projectors including Barco, NEC and Christie projectors.

Laser projection is another exciting innovation coming around the corner so as to stretch the boundaries of digital cinema projection. With the expected future adoption of laser projection technology in commercial cinema projection, the general public will be able to enjoy compelling and immersive 3D images delivered at light levels normally only possible for 2D movies.

SS – GDC products such as the SX3000/ DCI-3000 support high frame rate content in 2D and 3D and also 4K image resolution. TW – Tell us about achieving DCI compliance for GDC's Integrated Media Block (IMB). SS – GDC's IMB is a DCI compliant product. We went through the testing procedures set out by the DCI and demonstrated compliance with the Digital Cinema System Specification to ensure a high level of technical performance, reliability and quality control of all our DCI compliant products. TW – Can you explain the importance of RAID 5 technology in the PSD-3000? SS – With RAID 5 technology, the PSD-3000 can remain operational in the event of a single drive failure and we can simply renew the damaged hard disk to resume its normal operation which keeps exhibitors away from storage hassle. TW – How is the Theatre Management System (TMS-1000) supporting cinema theaters? SS – The TMS-1000 is a theatre management system that offers users a centralized point of control for an entire cineplex. It is a comprehensive solution managing user security, content, show playlist and scheduling, error and screen control. The TMS-1000 allows exhibitors to automate and streamline the entire theatre operation at their fingertips. TW – What rapid response services are available for customer services, network management and technical support in smaller cities? SS – We have to respond fast to customers' requests given the geographical constraints and to provide prompt solutions through our 24/7 global service team and NOC (Network Operations Centre).
