SHIFT PERSPECTIVES AND CREATE NEW STORIES.”
“WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS
- ANDILE NDLOVU 3
DEAR FRIENDS, Ballet, as an art form, is always evolving, growing, changing - as it should. Oftentimes, growth happens behind the scenes, over time. But in the 2022/2023 season, at every turn, TWB audiences will witness the evolution of The Washington Ballet, live on stage. We’ve just promoted five artists from the Studio Company, which adds new dynamism and energy to The Washington Ballet. You’ll also see several role debuts, as individual dancers continue their artistic growth and development and take on new and different creative challenges. Thrilling! This season, you’ll also see familiar faces in new contexts. For example, our own Andile Ndlovu is distinguishing himself as a choreographer; we’re excited to invest in his artistic talents. Choreographers Silas Farley and Dana Genshaft, who many of our audiences remember from our 2020/21 all-digital season, return to set new works upon the company. All of these new choreographers have deep roots in classical ballet, and their interpretations are so thoroughly modern. This is how our art form grows. Finally, TWB will bring fresh perspective to seminal works, including those by Balanchine and our own Sleeping Beauty. When we brought Balanchine’s Serenade back into the repertoire in 2016, the curtain rose on a stage filled with gifted young dancers. Next winter, as we revisit Serenade and debut other Balanchine masterworks, I am looking forward to marveling in the impressive and extraordinary growth of these dancers, individually and collectively. That is the beauty of ballet. Through repetition and iteration, grit and grace, we grow and evolve, finding new talent, new ways of working, and new commitment to the art form. Please join us for the 2022/23 season!
