The Washington Ballet continues to champion the advancement and evolution of dance in the 21st century. NEXTsteps, The Washington Ballet’s 2020/21 season opener, brings fresh, new ballets created on TWB dancers to the nation’s capital. With works by emerging and acclaimed choreographers Silas Farley, dancer and choreographer with the New York City Ballet; Dana Genshaft, former San Francisco Ballet soloist and returning TWB choreographer; and Stanton Welch, Artistic Director of the Houston Ballet, energy and inspiration will abound from the studio, to the stage, and into the audience.
The Washington Ballet is thrilled to present an evening of works by Alexei Ratmansky, American Ballet Theatre’s prolific artist-inresidence. Known for his musicality, energy, and classicism, the renowned choreographer is defining what classical ballet looks like in the 21st century. In addition to the 17 ballets he’s created for ABT, Ratmansky has choreographed genre-defining ballets for the Mariinsky Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, The Australian Ballet and more, as well as for ballet greats Nina Ananiashvili, Diana Vishneva, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. A Night of RATMANSKY will showcase a variety of his impactful works.
THE NUTCRACKER
GISELLE
Choreography by Septime Webre Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Music by Adolphe Adam Choreography after Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli with additional staging and choreography by Julie Kent and Victor Barbee
NOVEMBER 28 – DECEMBER 27, 2020 The Warner Theatre Dancers leap within the most-charming-of DC snowstorms and waltz through bursting cherry blossoms in our captivating iteration of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker. Choreographed by Septime Webre, this DC-centric production is set in 1882 Georgetown with George Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and historic characters including Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, and Harriet Tubman. This spirited, all-American production has become a beloved and highlyanticipated holiday favorite in the nation’s capital.
APRIL 7 – 11, 2021 The Warner Theatre Giselle, the quintessential Romantic Era ballet, embodies the fantasy, etherealism, and supernaturalism that was so popular in art and literature in the early 19th century. This two-act ballet tells the tragic story of Giselle, a lovely peasant girl, who falls for the charms of the deceitful Count Albrecht. When the truth is revealed, Giselle dies of heartbreak. Deep in the forest, she rises from her grave and dances with the beautiful and irresistible Wilis. As the spirits of maidens who were wronged by their lovers, they take revenge in the night by compelling men to dance until they perish. In the end, Giselle not only saves Albrecht from the Wilis, she saves herself from becoming one of them.
CINDERELLA Choreography by Ben Stevenson Music by Sergei Prokofiev MAY 12 – 16, 2021 The Kennedy Center, Eisenhower Theater Cinderella, the much-loved, familiar fairy tale comes to life on stage with stunning sets, fanciful costumes, and Sergei Prokofiev’s enchanting score. This rags-to-riches tale reminds us that dreams do come true. Ben Stevenson originally choreographed his version of Cinderella in 1970 for the National Ballet in Washington, DC. Stevenson’s staging and choreography imbue a feeling of lightness throughout the production, which further emphasizes the joy of this beloved fairy tale.
