TODA Y! 4/17/15 1:35 PM
I am thrilled to invite you to be a part of The Washington Ballet’s 2015.2016 season—it promises to be a PASSIONATE and MOVING experience and our most adventuresome season yet, and we reaffirm our commitment to bring you the best in dance from around the world. We open the season with a celebration of the energy and sensual splendor of Latin culture with LATIN HEAT. These classical and contemporary Latin works will include our third world premiere by Colombian/Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and our first world premiere with one of the dance world’s “enfants terribles,” Italian wunderkind Mauro de Candia.
from Septime
Director’s Cut is a thrilling and innovative evening that includes a bold collection of short dance films plus three works including one of the most influential ballets created in the last 30 years, William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated. For 400 years, Hamlet continues to be one of the most important and revisited Shakespeare works and we premiere the provocative and elegant Stephen Mills’ Hamlet with music by Philip Glass. This is followed by the return of my Carmina Burana after a ten year absence, a magnificent dance and choral spectacle presented with George Balanchine’s masterwork, Theme and Variations. We close the season with Bowie & Queen, a boisterous celebration of two innovative musical icons that transformed international popular culture, in a pair of premieres by Trey McIntyre and Edwaard Liang. We are family! You and your family can experience a breathtaking season of dance by creating a personalized Family Series that includes the charms of Coppélia, the Hans Christian Andersen classic The Little Mermaid and the exuberant LATIN HEAT: Kids! No season is complete without The Nutcracker. I promise more new surprises this year. I invite you to subscribe to our full season so that you may enjoy the breadth of our offerings and celebrate dance throughout the year. I so hope you will be part of what promises to be an exhilarating and raucous ride. Let’s dance.

Edward Villella, founder of Miami City Ballet, transformed the American male dancer and the way male dancers were perceived. He was invited by George Balanchine to join New York City Ballet in 1957 and served as a NYCB principal dancer who was the original male lead in many important ballets in their repertoire.
One of America’s most acclaimed ballerinas, Amanda McKerrow, was trained by Mary Day at TWB. She has the distinction as the first American to receive a gold medal at the International Ballet Competition in Moscow. Invited to join American Ballet Theatre in 1982, she served for many years as a principal dancer and is celebrated for her leading roles in the full-length and shorter works in the ABT repertoire.
Founder of Dance Theatre of Harlem, Arthur Mitchell changed the face of the future of dance when he accepted George Balanchine’s invitation to join New York City Ballet in 1955. This was an unprecedented honor for Mitchell, a child of Harlem who went on to serve for many years as a NYCB principal dancer and Balanchine muse. Mitchell is legendary for his exemplary work on stage and in creating opportunity for students and dancers.
