Joyce Byers (played by Winona Ryder) is the mother of missing boy Will, who seems to be the center of strange phenomena in Netflix's newist original offering.
'Stranger Things' is in love with the '80s Which is why we're in love with 'Stranger Things' Netflix’s recently released Stranger Things is a beautiful homage to the childhood optimism and wonder embedded in early Spielberg films (E.T.); a respectful recapture of the sci-fi, government paranoia in John Carpenter movies (The Thing) and an ode to the dreadful uncertainty and paranormal horror found in Stephen King's novels (It). A better executed Super 8 (Sorry, J.J. Abrams), the story told in Matt and Ross Duffer’s Stranger Things is deeply rooted and tangled in its 80s influences. The eight-episode series, set in 1980s Indiana, follows the aftermath of the eerie disappearance of 12-year-old boy Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). The events of Stranger Things take place a little over a week, with each episode spanning a day. Within that week, the characters stumble both into a government conspiracy and a terrifying monstrous creature from a different dimension. The story is engrossing, tightly paced, and will lead to an obsessive binge-watch.
The show’s vast ensemble can easily be categorized by three different tiers: adults, high schoolers and kids. Throughout the series, each group of characters embarks on separate but related journeys in an effort to decipher the truth behind the strange occurrences manifesting in their small town. Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Black Swan) and Jim Harbour (Newsroom) give the series its star power as the missing boy’s grieving mother and the intuitive sheriff in charge of the search. Ryder gives a magnetic performance as a mother surrounded by skeptics, descending deeper into madness and ugly paranoia with each mysterious, supernatural encounter. The most notable facet of the show is its casting of young actors: The freshfaced Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarzarro and Caleb McLaughlin are superb finds and do a remarkable job of conveying authenticity and adventure into their

Final Summer Stock show ushers in a change of pace at the Averitt 'night, Mother to open in Whitaker Black Box Theater “Mama” Cates attempts to convince her daughter not to end her own life while Jessie, played by another Averitt STAR Nora Franklin, makes herself ready to depart this world by finishing up her final to-do list. “I think there are things in (the play) that are very relatable just in life. If you’ve lived any kind of life or been through anything in your life, there are parts of it that you could say ‘Yeah, I’ve felt like that before’ and you have things to draw from," Franklin said. “I have never sat there and said I wanted to commit suicide, but you’ve been to points of desperation in your life that you can pull from to say, 'Yeah it makes sense how someone could feel this alone or this sad.' And you can empathize with that.” Bringing ‘night, Mother to the Averitt is a change of pace from what audiences might be used to seeing, but the cast and crew are optimistic that the audience will enjoy the performance. “We don’t want people going away saying, ‘Well, if life is not going the way you want it, let’s go put a bullet in your head,' " Frazier said. "... The characters are really complex. There’s a lot to Thelma and there’s alot to Jessie ... (the audience) shouldn’t think poorly of Mama and they couldn’t think poorly of Jessie. I don’t think they should dislike either of them. I don’t think they should say ‘Jessie

It’s eight o’clock on Saturday night in rural America. The interior of the house looks like any other stereotypical home, a wooden space complete with an antenna TV, wicker baskets and mismatched furniture. The home is comfortable and plain — and also the place of a woman’s upcoming suicide. Written by Marsha Norman, ‘night, Mother takes place during what would be another normal, boring night in the lives of mother-daughter duo Thelma “Mama” Cates and Jessie Cates — that is, until troubled daughter Jessie reveals to Thelma that she plans to commit suicide before the night is over. “It’s a play that I have known for a long time and have wanted to do because it is such a challenge for me. After I knew about the play, but before I actually saw the play performed or read it, I watched the movie,” Susan Jackson, the Averitt STAR actress who plays Thelma, said, referring to the 1986 film adaptation. “When I saw the movie, I realized that this is the play I’ve been wanting to do. I literally fell in love with it and I ordered the script, so I’ve had this script for a long time just because I have been waiting for someone to do it.” That “someone” is director Eddie Frazier, who will bring the production to the Averitt Center come August with the help of co-director Ashley Wade, a Statesboro High School senior, Summer Stock intern and stage manager Kelsey Waller and stage technician Olivia Carter. “It does have ... a little bit of dark humor every now and then, but the audience will catch themselves chuckling. If the performers are doing their jobs right, which they always do, the audience will catch themselves laughing. Then they’ll catch themselves like, ‘Should I be laughing at this?’ ” Frazier said. As the night unravels, Thelma

Baby, you're so classic Nintendo is throwing us back with a new NES Classic Edition, and we're in nostalgic love Nintendo has decided to drop a nuclear bomb on us in a tiny, minuature form. Coming soon from Nintendo, the NES Classic Edition system is a minaturized version of the NES video game console that Tim started it all back in 1985. Nintendo had the NES Classsic Edition on display at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, giving fans the opportunity to look at it up close and personal. The mini console looks like the original NES from 1985, but the new mini version is no wider than the original NES controller. The new NES is scheduled to be released Nov. 11, 2016, with 30 classic games packed inside. It also comes with one NES Classic Controller, an

HDMI cable and an AC adapter. Extra classic controllers will cost $9.99 each. Nintendo has said that the Classic Controller — or Classic Controller Pro, for the Wii and Wii U — will also work with the mini Webb NES. The NES Classic Edition itself will retail for $59.99. I will definetly be picking up one or more of these mini systems. The games on this system were instrumental in my love for this entertainment form. It's been a huge month for Nintendo with the announcement of this new NES Classic Edition and the insanely popular Pokemon Go, and I can't wait to see what they have planned for the holiday season.w

the so-called experts’ expectations for the upcoming season. With that said, league coaches picked Appalachian State (114 points, 5 firstplace votes) to win the conference title with Arkansas Brown State (110, 5 first-place votes) coming in a close second. Georgia Southern (98, 1 firstplace vote) was picked third, and then there was a pretty significant drop-off to fourth-place Georgia State (73). Yes, Georgia State was picked fourth. Sure, the Panthers have gotten better, but are they that much better? And how bad is the rest of the conference expected to be if Georgia State is projected to finish fourth? Woof. Once again, pre-season polls don’t mean squat — all that matters is what you do on the field. But in the minds of the league coaches, it’s going to be a three-horse race between Appalachian State, Arkansas State and Georgia Southern. Troy and UL-Lafayette (70) tied for fifth, South Alabama (62) was picked seventh and Idaho (48) and New Mexico State (37) were picked eighth and ninth, respec-

Texas State (30) and UL-Monroe (14) round out the 11-team league. As for individual honors, running back Matt Breida, offensive lineman Andy Kwon and defensive linemen Jay Ellison and Bernard Dawson were named first team all-conference. Defensive tackle Darrius Sapp was named to the second team. New Mexico State junior running back Larry Rose III was named the Pre-season Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year, while Appalachian State senior linebacker John Law was named the preseason Defensive Player of the Year. In my mind, if there’s a front seven
as talented as Georgia Southern’s in the Sun Belt, I want to see it. Three defensive linemen were named all-conference, but the linebackers didn’t get any love. And I’m kind of okay with that. I’d put the Eagle linebacking corps against anybody in the Sun Belt — and maybe now that unit will play with a little chip on their shoulder this season. More than anything else, preseason polls and awards probably just make me ready for the season to hurry up and get here. The team reports to campus this weekend and practice starts next week. jock archetypes present in most high school stories. Stranger Things is a perfect homage to 80s classics, but it is not a perfect show: gaps in logic and decision-making are often made, scenes are sometimes played without subtlety, and a number of secondary and tertiary characters lack nuance. These shortcomings are easily overshadowed by the Duffer brother’s immense adoration
of and commitment to capturing the unique atmosphere of the 80s. Matt and Ross Duffer are able to effortlessly teleport us back several decades with a spot-on, retro soundtrack and grainy, vintage visuals. Turns out, the 80s are a perfect period for throwback stories about terrorizing monsters, science experiments gone wrong, and the infinite routes and possibilities of childhood adventures.w

It’s hard to believe, but we are five weeks away from football. The summer isn’t over yet, but it sure is flying by. Last week, Georgia Southern learned that it would be forced to vacate Alex three wins from 2013 and 2014 as a result of the NCAA’s punishment for academic infractions during those seasons. The first two games of 2013 against Savannah State and St. Francis along with the 2014 season finale against UL-Monroe were all erased from the record books because student athletes who received inappropriate academic assistance participated in those games. The Eagles’ 2014 Sun Belt Conference championship was not impacted, which is great news for Georgia Southern. Hopefully, we can put that to bed for good now and shift our focus to the upcoming 2016 season. The Sun Belt Conference is holding its media days in New Orleans this week, so conference preseason accolades are being doled out. Honestly, preseason awards aren’t worth much in my mind — but it gives us something to talk about and an idea of

A Statesboro storyteller and an illustrator from Spain are about to bring their fully crowdfunded comic book to life

Braddock’s passion for writing stories first developed when he was a teenager, but he only recently started practicing illustrations and sharing with the public in the last two years. The comic writer attended East Georgia State College for three years before taking a hiatus to work on Midnight Persons. Midnight Persons features “ascended” individuals who use their newfound abilities to expose a corrupt government and save the
rest of humankind, inciting them to leave a dying Earth and travel to space in the hopes of forming a new civilization. “Midnight Persons is a melting pot of stories and genres that inspired both Hector and I growing up and on into adulthood,” Braddock said. “Everything from alternative comics, to novels, to anime inspired this story and informed my decisions on how to craft it.” Thanks to the support of his
Illustrations by Hector Trunnec Kickstarter backers, Braddock has the necessary funds to work on Midnight Persons Issue #0, a fullcolor, 20-page comic that serves as an introduction to the style, setting, tone, and characters. Braddock decided to present his story as a comic rather than a novel due to the unique storytelling potential and audience engagement that a comic offers to its readers when they’re exposed to its stunning visuals. “In no other medium do I feel there is such a sense of magic,” Braddock said. “Comics are a collection of words and images subtly put together to guide the reader in a truly unique way. I knew Midnight Persons was perfect for a comic because it contains things that would be hard to capture on film or in a book. This is a unique story. I didn't just want to write a book. I wanted people to see into this world.” After a lengthy search for the
right illustrator, Braddock came into contact with his creative partner, Trunnec, on an online comic forum focused on connecting artists and writers. Trunnec’s contribution to the project includes illustrating, inking, painting, and lettering the comic panels for Midnight Persons. “I admired his work and started imagining things that would work with his style and choice of medium and palette,” Braddock said. “I've always loved his water colors, and I couldn't help but think of characters that would pop with those kind of effects. So I reached out to him once I felt I had collected enough character design and written enough of the script and outline to make it worth even looking at.” Although Trunnec trusted in Braddock’s vision enough to agree to be paid through a crowdfunding campaign instead of upfront, the illustrator-writer duo still had to

After a year and a half of creating a futuristic world full of super-powered heroics and global perils in his head, Statesboro resident Jordan Braddock decided to pursue his vision and bring his concept to life as a comic. After contacting Hector Trunnec, a full-time painter and illustrator who lives in Spain, Braddock launched a successful 30-day fundraising campaign on Kickstarter for the pilot issue of Midnight Persons, a sci-fi noir thriller about willpower, belief and magic.
12 ‘I have composed enough of the story to continue forward... We may wind up crowdfunding Issue #1 in the same fashion as this pilot issue. We will only be able to wait and see at that point, but just like everything leading up to now, it's one step at a time.’ Jordan Braddock,

overcome several challenges, such as long-distance and a language barrier, while working together. Braddock said, “The process was around eight months of me designing images featuring characters that he would then adjust based on his and my critiquing of each new model. There were and are challenges involved with communicating, considering that neither of us speaks each other's language. The Internet has acted as a catalyst for our
communication in that we have translator options on all social media we use for communication, and we’re transparent if we don't understand something like an idiom. I also trained myself to draw in the early stages of conceiving the story, so if I can't quite explain something to him, I just draw it.” Despite living in on separate continents, Braddock and Trunnec’s collaboration has made steady progress and fruitful results due to a com-
mendable work ethic from both partners. “As far as how we collaborate, it's a system of emails and scanned images,” Braddock said. “We speak often and vote on almost all the details. We inform each other of our personal activities and projected completion times. It's time management, mutual respect, transparency and a love for the subject matter.” The projected release date of the project is September. Although it is too late for people to back the project for this introductory issue, once Midnight Persons arrives in print, Braddock will have extra copies for sale for those still interested in supporting the comic. All of that information will be provided after the original Kickstarter backers have received their comics and respective rewards merchandise. Braddock and Trunnec are currently in the story-boarding phrase of the project. Braddock’s current responsiblities involve translating the script of Midnight Persons Issue #0 into illustrations, thumbnails and notes so that Trunnec can use them as a blueprint to create the comic panels. Braddock said, “There are usually three to five people working on the visual side of any comic. Hector is a one-man team when it comes to this, so I do all I can to take care of all the conceptualization and writing. It's a symbiotic working relationship that allows for a product better than either of us could produce alone.” Although the majority of their attention is focused on the task at hand, once Midnight Persons Issue #0 is completed, Braddock and Trunnec plan to send copies to publishers that accept creator-owned stories or may want to pick it up for an ongoing series. “I have composed enough of the story to continue forward in that event,” Braddock said. “We may wind up crowdfunding Issue #1 in the same fashion as this pilot issue. We will only be able to wait and see at that point, but just like everything leading up to now, it's one step at a time.”w

It retreats and repeats, but 'Star Trek' succeeds The Enterprise (absent Alice Eve’s character from Into Darkness) in the third year of its five-year voyage. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) is once again worried about living up to his father’s legacy, and once again, Spock (Zachary Quinto) struggles to appease both his Vulcan and human commitments — both characters seemingly stuck in perpetual angst. It doesn’t take long before the Enterprise crew is lured into a trap, separated from each other and stranded on a far, forgotten planet. Subsequent films have largely been the Kirk and Spock Show, but Beyond changes things up and splits the cast into pairs, giving the underutilized supporting characters a little more to

range from cheesy to charming. They’re all working to stop Idris Elba’s Krall, a brutal but bland alien commander who, much like Eric Bana’s Nero and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Kahn, harbors a strong, initially unexplained hatred for Starfleet and The Federation. Vengeance and blind revenge have been the primary motivator for all the rebooted franchise’s villains, and it’s starting to grow stale. Unless the series learns some new tricks for future films, it’s going to outstay its welcome. Luckily, with a new director, the film offers some exciting new visuals and stunning set pieces to keep things fresh. Lin, having directed four Fast and Furious films, has no problem transitioning from muscle cars to starships, having fun with the infinite spatial possibilities of interstellar combat. Staging the wonder and kinetic energy of a massive space hub while the team is on shore leave, the frantic confusion and chaos of an unexpected ambush set by a swarm of hostile drones, or the manic activity of a third-act chase scene — Lin is able to capture it all. He only falters with interior shots: Shootouts in corridors and fisticuffs between foes in cargo bays are too dark and dimly lit to get a clear sense of action. Despite being a third entry, Star Trek Beyond is full of promise and far from a swan song. It retreats into familiar territory instead of treading new ground, but there’s also a glint of ingenuity and inventiveness in how it delivers its rote material. There’s hope for later films to finally “boldly go” beyond its recycled structure and explore new stories.w
Connect Statesboro 07.27.2016 www.connectstatesboro.com
Star Trek Beyond, the third entry in the revived series, is a small but successful step in the right direction despite repeating character beats and plot points from its predecessors. Screenwriters Simon Pegg — who also plays Montgomery Scott — and Doug Jung have stepped up to task in writing a fun, slightly self-aware script. Alternatively, after directing both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the incumbent J.J. Abrams has stepped down from the franchise, handing the reins to Justin Lin of Fast and Furious fame. The changes behind the camera are a much-needed defibrillator, jumpstarting the fading heartbeat of the rebooted franchise. Pegg and Jung’s script follows

The White House under attack from aliens in "Independence Day," which was released in 1996.
Jeff Peterson, Deseret News
Reboots showcase evolving special effects The expression “what’s old is new again” applies these days when it comes to Hollywood’s big-budget tentpole movies. The release of Ghostbusters is just one more example of the Hollywood remake/reboot/sequel machine working overtime to revisit anything and everything old enough to possibly be considered a classic. Later this year, audiences can also look forward to a reimagining of Pete’s Dragon, a modern Magnificent Seven and an action-blockbuster take on BenHur, all of which look to past decades in the hopes of making beloved films fresh — not to mention profitable — again. Equally appropriate for movies such as these, though, is another common expression: “They sure don’t make ’em like they used to” — quite literally, in fact. Here’s a look back at a few examples of remakes, reboots and sequels of older classics from just this year and how special effects have changed from the original to the modern versions: GHOSTBUSTERS (1984/2016): The original Ghostbusters was arguably the first of its kind: less a comedy with special effects and more an “effects movie” with comedy. Remarkably, the whole thing was completed in just 10 short months with a special effects budget of only $5 million, according
MIRTH, from page 4 people, for people of color, for people with disabilities, critics and audience members alike are demanding that the playing field be evened and that screens be more diverse. And the pushback against an all-female cast — and the particular online targeting of the only black actress in the quartet (Leslie Jones, who endured a ton of harrassment last week by online trolls responding to the movie) — shows that there are still a lot of audience members resistant to the idea. This is partly why the movie is sucking so badly in the box office
to effects supervisor Richard Edlund (via tested.com). In order to bring the movie’s variety of ghouls, poltergeists and Sumerian gods to life, the effects team used an equally varied bunch of “old-school” techniques ranging from foam latex puppets (such as Slimer) to miniatures to matte paintings and anything else they could think of. The vast majority of it, however, was done in-camera, meaning that it didn’t require postproduction tweaking. While the tools have changed drastically, the new Ghostbusters carries part of that tradition into the modern age, according to a lot of early reviews, as a splashy effects-driven action-comedy that, unlike most 3-D movies, might be worth ponying up the extra cash to see with the funny glasses. INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996)/INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (2016): Anyone old enough to remember seeing director Roland Emmerich’s first foray into multimillion-dollar cinematic destruction will no doubt remember the movie’s signature special effects shot: the White House getting blown up by a giant blue alien death beam. Independence Day earned its effects team, led by Volker Engel, an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. In his acceptance
standings, where it is struggling to break even with its production costs. The message Hollywood is receiving right now is clear: Audiences don't want to see atypical female narratives, especially not in spaces society has decided are for boys only. And of course, that isn't the right message at all, because tons of moviegoers (or at least the ones who are vocal online) want very much to see those narratives. Plenty of people, I'm sure, are avoiding the movie because we are sick of having our nostalgic heartstrings jerked with reboots and unnecessary sequels. But that isn't the message Hollywood
DESERET NEWS/ special
speech, Engel said, “This is movie magic,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. It may be hard to believe given today’s CGI wonderlands, but according to Engel (via The Hollywood Reporter), 95 percent of the effects for the original Independence Day were done using miniatures with motion-control cameras. That includes the White House shot, which Engel said was staged using a 15-foot-wide-by-5-foot-high model complete with individually detailed floors and custom miniature furniture. This summer’s Independence Day: Resurgence shows just how much visual effects have changed in the past two decades. Compared to the original film’s 430 visual effects shots, the new movie boasts a staggering 1,750, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Engel, who once again oversaw the film’s special effects, said they still used things such as props and models, but now they’re all done digitally inside a computer. SUPERMAN (1978)/BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (2016): “You’ll believe a man can fly,” as the movie’s tagline famously said, and while the techniques used to make Christopher Reeve soar through the sky like a bird (no, a plane … no, Superman!)
is going to receive. The reboot machine isn't going to stop anytime soon, with Power Rangers, Baywatch, Men in Black and another Planet of the Apes all slotted for releases in 2017 because, despite our groaning and lamentation, we keep paying for these stupid movies. The only message Hollywood receives loud and clear is one that comes after a dollar sign. (This is why, even though we can all agree the Transformers movies are irredeemably awful, the franchise is scheduled for four more films. FOUR. MORE. FILMS.) I'm not saying Ghostbusters is good. I feel about the movie the same
might seem primitive by today’s standards, they were downright revolutionary circa 1978. According to fxphd.com, the film pioneered, among other things, a brand-new technology known as the Zoptic front-projection system to capture the effect of Superman flying toward the screen. A special “cape-fluttering” device was also developed that used remote-controlled poles like one might find in an umbrella. Superman was also the first movie to feature a computer-generated title sequence, in the sense that the “streak” photography used for the titles involved a camera controlled by computer (but not CGI), according to filmsite.org. By contrast, in the character’s latest cinematic outing, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s apparent just how much the use of green screens has developed — everything from the backgrounds to the pounding rain to Superman’s cape and even Batman’s armor, in many instances, are CGI, according to batman-news.com. (No need for mechanical cape-flutterers here!) This allows for filmmaking to be more visually dynamic than 1978’s Superman director, Richard Donner, likely ever could have dreamed.w
way I feel about the Fallout Boy cover of the theme song: that it was wholly unnecessary. But a movie doesn't have to be good to be enjoyable, or be a paragon of excellence to make a step in the right direction. And if throwing money at Ghostbusters — even if we were to buy tickets and then never actually use them — communicates that it's about damn time we had good female characters, then I'll consider it money well spent.
