Eagles dominated Cajuns, defeated by Troy folks who wanted to be there were not able to be, but that’s a really good problem to have. I would love to have that same problem for every home game left on the schedule. As big of a win as Thursday’s game was, Brown Southern had to hit the road and get back to business at Troy Saturday night. And the Trojans came to play. Troy hit 12 three pointers and shot 52.2 percent from long range. Kelton Ford and Musa Abdul-Aleem did most of the damage as they combined for 49 points and were 10-17 from three point land. Jelani Hewitt racked up 28 points for the Eagles, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Trojans as Southern fell 75-71. Georgia Southern spent two days in first place, but currently sits in second with a 4-2 record in Sun Belt play. UL Lafayette lost its second conference game Saturday to fall into a tie with the Eagles. Everybody else has three losses or more. UL Monroe is alone in first at 5-1. Georgia Southern travels to Monroe this Saturday. But first up is a return trip to Texas State Thursday night. The Eagles defeated the Bobcats 40-36 in Statesboro on Jan.
3. Texas State is currently 4-3 in Sun Belt action and is coming off a 78-73 overtime loss at Arkansas State Saturday night. The next home game for the men is next Thursday when Appalachian State comes to Hanner. The Georgia Southern women aren’t enjoying their inaugural season in the Sun Belt quite as much as the men to this point. The Eagles are 4-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play. How much fun was that? It had been a while since Eagle Nation showed up in those kinds of numbers for a Georgia Southern basketball game. And the Eagles delivered. Southern handed LouisianaLafayette its first conference Alex loss of the season in front of a capacity Hanner Fieldhouse crowd of 4,325 Thursday night by a score of 78-70. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored the game’s first basket to take a 2-0 lead, but never led again. The Eagles extended their lead to as many as 13 late in the first half, but allowed ULL back in it to keep things interesting in the second half. Mike Hughes led the way for Southern with 18 points while Jelani Hewitt added 17. Curtis Diamond scored 12, Angel Matias had 11, and Eric Ferguson (9) was one point away from making it five Eagles in double figures. But let’s get back to that crowd. Last time Hanner was sold out was 2009 and, unfortunately, the majority of that crowd wasn’t there to see the Eagles. Stephen Curry was in town with his Davidson Wildcats fresh off a run to the Elite Eight. Fans were turned away at the door Thursday night. I hate it that some

Galactic Comics opens new (and bigger) doors Galactic Comics and Games, Statesboro's go-to venue for board games, graphic novels and all things awesome and nerdy, is throwing a game day extravaganza to celebrate its grand re-opening Saturday, Jan. 24, at its new location at 20 Vine Street. "It's really just a celebration, inviting everyone to come check out the new store and see what all we've done," said Keith Brown, the store's owner and manager. The store moved to its new location during the first week of December last year, and the staff has put off its celebration until the student demographic returned to join the fun and see what the new Galactic has to offer: namely, space. "It's so much bigger," Brown said.
"Everyone has absolutely loved it." With almost double the space they had in their old location at 25 Siebald Street — now property of the Averitt Center for the Arts — the store has had room to spread out and give their wares some air. It also means that the store has roughly 3,000 square feet of gaming space, with separate rooms for war games, role-playing and card games, and tournaments. The main event on Saturday will feature several tournaments once the doors open at 11 a.m. A Star Wars X-Wing Tournament will kick up at 11, followed by a Yu-Gi-Oh advance tournament at noon. Additionally, participants will be aple to help "playtest" a new role-playing game out of Jacksonville, Florida, called "Ultimum."

For the noobs among the readers, a "play-test" is just like a beta test for a video game, only IRL. Players will have the chance to give feedback and ask questions at the end of each game, giving them a say in the future development of the game itself. Prizes for the tournaments will depend on the turnout, but there's plenty of other incentive for the curious to show up. For instance, a representative from the Jekyll Island Convention will be present selling cosplay calendars and raising

The local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism — aka, the Renaissance Fair folks — will be in attendance as well, raising awareness and recruiting new members. And to cap it all off, people are invited to show up in costume. "For anybody who shows up in costume — any costume — there are going to be some special benefits," Brown said. "I'm not sure if we're having a full-blown costume contest, but we're definitely taking lots of photos and the most impressive will probably get something." According to Brown, 2014 was a big year for Galactic Comics as they began attending local conventions for the first time. He added, "2015 looks very promising as we continue the con circuit and continue to grow in our new, larger location."w

Winter is here — and it's kind of awesome TV series. Players will visit familiar locales like Kings Landing and The Wall. Although the game is a point-and-click adventure, some scenes require the player to respond to a series of quick time events that make the Webb game more action-oriented. Failing the quick time events can result in bad in-game decisions or even death of the playable characters. If the player dies, the game gives restarts at a checkpoint just before the bad decision to give the players a second chance. The game takes place concurrently with the HBO series, from the end of the third season until just before the start of the fifth season. Fight off memory loss with nostalgic music from Journey tribute band DEPARTURE Brittani Howell For the third year in a row, the Rockin’ Out Alzheimer’s Committee is bringing a huge night of nostalgic music to Statesboro to raise money for the Coastal Georgia Alzheimer’s Association. This year, however, they’re switching gears from their usual Elton John tribute band for a band with a bit more hair — er, flair: DEPARTURE, a Southeast-based Journey tribute band. According to Jenny Lynn Anderson, a member of the Rockin’ Out Alzheimer’s Committee in charge of choosing each year’s act, “The Journey Tribute Band replicates the look, sound and feel of the original '80s rock supergroup. The musicians give their audience an incredible high-energy stage show highlighting all the hit songs that everyone knows and loves.” Translation: If your first wedding dance was to “Faithfully” or if “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” is your personal power anthem, you aren’t going to want to
miss this. "Like last year, we are expecting a huge crowd at the Performing Arts Center, so we encourage everyone to get tickets early," said Darron Burnette, co-chairman of the Rockin' Out committee and a dedicated advocate for the case. Burnette's mother and grandmother both suffered from the disease. In a search for answers and guidance, he joined the Coastal Georgia Alzheimer's Association, where he is now a member of the board. Burnette and committee co-chair Chandler Dennard wanted their fundraiser to stand out from the usual 5Ks and the softball tournament they already did each summer. After running into an Elton John tribute band a few years ago, they decided that vintage rock concerts were the way to go. When looking for a new band for this year's concert, they polled all 12 members of their committee for the top five bands they would want to see live. Journey made the list every time.

The third annual Rockin' Out Alzheimer's concert features DEPARTURE, a Journey tribute band bringing all the big hits from, "Don't Stop Believin'" to "Separate Ways" and everywhere in between.
info When? Jan. 24, 7:30 p.m. WHERE? Georgia Southern Performing Arts Center HOW MUCH? $20, to be purchased online or at the PAC box office
With a new band, Burnette said he expects to see the age demographic at the concert change. “[With Elton] we probably attracted people from 30 to 70. This, we hope, will grab some college students, and we’ll probably only grab people until about age 60," Burnette said. "We’ll probably go from 20- to 60-year-olds, so we’ll have a little bit of shift that hopefully will attract more of the college instead of the seniors.” However, they're expecting the show itself to be bigger and to raise more money than ever before. Burnette said that this year, the committee had doubled their number of sponsors for the event and their goal is to raise a net $30,000 — $8,000 more than their event raised last year. And the show doesn't stop after the lights go down. "An after-event celebration will be hosted at Chops Restaurant, where celebrity bartenders will continue to
raise funds for the association," wrote Anderson. It's a different way to go about raising money and awareness: using nostalgic music from decades past to fight against memory loss. But it's not, perhaps, as unusual as one might think. For Burnette, older music was something he and his mother could share, even when her health began to fail. “The more she progressed in her disease, in the time I spent with her we would listen to music more than we did anything," Burnette said. "She loved — especially during those years — being able to sit there and listen, because a lot of time [Alzheimer's patients] revert back in time." However, he said with a laugh, "She would have been more of an Elton John fan." Until you challenge your capabilities, you won't know your limits. TAURUS (April 20– May 20) — Make a blueprint for your professional future. Direct your energies with precision and stick to your agenda. Don't trust anyone who tries to take credit for your ideas. GEMINI (May 21–June 20) — Your hard work is paying off, and your life goals are within reach. You will advance to the next level and make new goals to strive for. You are on your way up. CANCER (June 21–July 22) — Positive changes lie ahead, but legal or investment contracts need to be dealt with first. Consider the consequences involved if you sign an agreement without careful inspection.
LEO (July 23–Aug. 22) — You will feel a great sense of relief once you have dealt with pending issues. Take care of your responsibilities quickly in order to more truly enjoy simpler pleasures. VIRGO (Aug. 23–Sept. 22) — Procrastination will be your downfall. Problems at work and with relationships can be cleared up once you figure out what's really bothering you. Don't be afraid to take action. LIBRA (Sept. 23– Oct. 23) — This is your time to shine. Take control and plan a gathering or fun event. Love and romance are looking hot, and putting greater emphasis on personal achievements will lift your spirits. SCORPIO (Oct. 24– Nov. 22) — Opposition will come from an unlikely source. Don't trust someone claiming to have your best interests in mind. You will come out on top as long as you don't share personal secrets. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23– Dec. 21) — An entertaining approach will help you sell whatever you are trying to offer. Showing off a little will help you beat out any competition you face. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22– Jan. 19) — An interesting adventure is imminent. Someone you thought gone will resurface. Fresh and innovative moneymaking schemes will bring positive results and lead to an enterprise-filled future.w

CAN'T STOP, WON’T STOP — Deputies tried stopping a woman on Brooklet-Denmark Road last week for speeding, but she ignored the blue lights until she reached her home. Then, they arrested her for running 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, and for not stopping. DOGS GONE — Deputies and humane enforcement officers seized 11 dogs found in “unacceptable” condition, without adequate food, water and shelter. The dogs suffered injuries as well. Charges are pending.
"BEER? WHAT BEER?" — A sheriff’s deputy on patrol walked into Pojo’s store on Hwy. 80 West just after a man walked out with a stolen beer The deputy went outside and questioned the suspect, who denied the theft, but the store owner happened to drive up and told the deputy he saw the suspect chunk the beer into the bushes. GANG RETALIATION — A woman told police she was approached by a man who asked for a cigarette, and he threatened her with harm when she refused. She later found the words “Blood Gang” written in the rain on her car, she said.w

The Statesboro Herald, a small daily in southeast Georgia, the home of Georgia Southern University, seeks a sharp, versatile reporter who loves covering high school sports and embraces a full multimedia approach to coverage. And we don’t mean just football and basketball, important as those are in our area. The ideal candidate will have some experience covering prep sports or be a recent college graduate with a degree in journalism and a working knowledge of and interest in sports. This position not only requires writing, but also page design and copy editing, so we ask either that you be familiar with Adobe InDesign or be quickly trainable. An average of three nights a week, this person will design the sports pages and may also have to file a game or enterprise story the same day. Also, there is some on-camera work for our sports video shows and our live coverage of high school football. You must be a team player; our sports editor relies on this person to help make the section the best it can be in print and online. Salary is commensurate with experience, and we offer full benefits, including health coverage, 401(k) and paid vacation. Statesboro is a small but growing college town that is about 45 minutes from Savannah and an hour from the beach. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be our next prep sports reporter, please send a cover letter, resume and five recent clips to editor Jason Wermers at jwermers@statesboroherald.com.
