program. SBCPRD's "Our Time" program offers a structured, supervised environment for K-fifth-grade students until 6 p.m. If a child needs extra attention with academics, then a parent can request assistance and the afterschool program will have someone like volunteer Sally Deal to lend a hand. Deal is using her thirty years of experience in the Bulloch County School System to continue educating children. After retirement, Ms. Deal did not want a full-time job, nor did she want to substitute, but she did still have the drive to teach. Deal has been an asset to the SBCPRD afterschool program since September 2014. She volunteers at Julia P. Bryant Elementary School on Mondays and Thursday from 2 – 4 p.m. at the request of parents of children in the program. SBCPRD relies on volunteers like Ms. Deal not only in the Afterschool Program, but in many other programs and events the department provides. “We are fortunate to live in a community where we utilize over 600 volunteers a year in AfterSchool, sports, and events,” says SBCPRD Director, Mike Rollins. “We could not provide many of the services we do without great volunteers.” Learn more about all of the after school programs under the "afterschool care section on the BCS website, www.bulloch.k12.ga.us/ backtoschool.

School system guidelines for dress Here’s what’s defined as appropriate, inappropriate for students Special to the Herald

The policy of the Bulloch County Board of Education is that good grooming and personal appearance are essential elements in the teaching and learning processes. Therefore, students’ dress is expected in such a manner to ensure the health and safety of all people in the school. Furthermore, the dress and personal appearance will not be disruptive or interfere with the legitimate interest and welfare of the students. Students should adhere to the following guidelines and/ or Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards:

Standards

1. Students must be neatly dressed, and clean, while at school. 2. Shoes or sandals must be worn. A closed toe shoe must be worn in laboratory and shop-type course areas consistent with OSHA stan-

dards. No bedroom shoes are permitted. 3. Hair must be clean, neatly styled, not in the eyes, and not of a length to be dangerous around machinery and equipment; long hair worn on males or females in these areas must be secured at the back of the head. 4. Clothing with pictures, writings, messages and/or symbols related to or promoting or considered to promote racism, sex, obscenities, alcohol, tobacco, violence and/or drugs shall be considered disruptive to the educational process and is prohibited. 5. Hats, headbands, bandanas, curlers, picks, hair nets, head gear of any kind, and sunglasses are not to be worn in the school building or on the school buses. These items must be placed in book bags prior to loading the bus or in lockers immediately upon arrival on campus if a car rider. 6. Pants/shorts with holes above the knee are unaccept-

able. Students wearing pants/slacks/skirts or shorts at an unacceptable level shall move the clothing to an acceptable level and secure it with their own personal belt, or with means supplied by the administration of the school. An appropriate length for shorts/skirts is a mid-thigh length or fingertip length with hands down by the side for grade levels four through 12. Pants/ slacks/skirts/shorts worn by

a student at an unacceptable level after having been instructed to do otherwise will be considered an act of insubordination. Pants must be worn on the hips/waist area; sagging pants are prohibited. 7. Belts must be buckled, sashes tied, straps strapped and suspenders properly worn. 8. Shirts must be of a length to be tucked, and midsection must be covered

at all times (seated/standing). Females should not wear tops that show cleavage, bare tank tops alone or spaghetti strap type tops without an over shirt/jacket. Bright colored undergarments under light colored shirts, shorts or pants are prohibited. 9. Pajamas should not be worn to school. 10. Gang-related clothing should not be worn at school. 11. Tattoos that are disruptive to the learning environment must be covered. Facial piercings and tooth grills are potential safety hazards and can be unduly disruptive to the learning environment and should not be worn at school.

Unacceptable dress during school

12. Biker pants, sagging pants, leggings, uncovered spandex, strapless attire, tank tops, half shirts, bare midriff tops, halters, see-through clothing, exposed underwear, unbuttoned shirts revealing bare chests, hang-

ing chains (including those chains that are attached to clothing), or coats/jackets that go below the waist (including dusters/trench or other similar styles) are not to be worn. 13. Changing of clothes on school property is to be restricted to rest rooms, dressing rooms, and other appropriate assigned places and is not to occur in classrooms or school buses. 14. Any student violating the dress code must modify the infraction per the administrator’s request or be considered insubordinate. The principal/designated person(s) has the authority to determine inappropriate dress. Refusal to obey a request to modify a dress code infraction will be treated as insubordination as described in the code of conduct. At the school official's discretion, this act will be considered as a Class I, II or III offense, with consequences described in the code of conduct.

At school, nutrition matters Special to the Herald The School Nutrition staff at each school invites and encourages your child’s participation in the breakfast, lunch, and snack programs. Nutritious meals and snacks are planned, prepared and served daily. Each week’s meals meet the dietary guidelines for students in the specified grade levels.

Meal Costs Breakfast is $1 for paying students and 30 cents for reduced-price students. Snacks are free to all students participating in afterschool academic programs. Lunch meals cost $1.80 in elementary schools and $2.05 in middle/high schools. Reduced-price students will pay 40 cents. Please place meal money in a sealed envelope with

your child’s first and last name, homeroom teacher and payment amount on the outside of the envelope. If paying by check, include student's first and last name on the check. My Lunch Money

Parents and guardians can now pay for school meals online with “My Lunch Money.” Go to the www.myLunch Money.com website to enroll and to start using the site to deposit funds into your student’s lunch account. Once your account is established, you can check balances or fund the account anytime from your home computer, phone or fax. Your child’s information is safe—it stays at school. Your personal and payment card information is protected by the most advanced Internet security.

2015-2016 Registration July 29-30 3-7pm

Call (800) 479-3531 or visit www.myLunchMoney.com for more information.

Charging Meals Payment is due at mealtime. Elementary students without cash or money on account may be allowed to charge for only five days. At that point the account must be paid before allowing additional charges. To avoid any potential embarrassment, students are given a green slip as a courtesy reminder after 3 charges. Also, negative balance letters are sent home weekly with each student. All account balances will be transferred to your child’s new school if they transfer schools within the system.

Free and reduced-price meals All students applying for benefits must complete a new application every year. The 2014-15 meal applications are distributed to all students the first week of school and are available in the school nutrition manager’s office. Some of the approved applications will be verified for correct information. If your application is selected, you are responsible for

providing the information. ➤ New students moving into the school system must complete an application immediately. Meal status does not transfer across county and state lines. ➤ Prior-year students who received benefits last year in Bulloch County are eligible to continue these benefits until Sept. 12 or until a new application is processed, whichever comes first. As of Sept. 12, students without an approved application must pay for meals. Completed applications must be returned to the cafeteria manager’s office for processing. The program does not accept any responsibility for applications returned to someone other than the cafeteria manager. For after-hours convenience, a secure drop box is provided at the Auxiliary Services Office, 18201 U.S. Highway 80 W., Statesboro. All applications will be processed within 10 days of the receiving date. Parents are responsible for payment of all meals during this approval period. You will be notified by mail if the application is approved or denied. All students in a family will bring home a blank copy of the application. Please complete only one form listing all students in the household. Instructions for completing the form are attached to the application. Incomplete applications cannot be processed and will be returned.
