Excited to feast on your favorite traditional foods but nervous about holding conversation with family members you haven’t seen since the event you agreed not to discuss at the next family gathering? We at Connect are here to help! We compiled five tips to ensure a successful Thanksgiving meal. (Editor's note: For maximum effect, please read these in the cheerful voice of Cecil Gershwin Palmer, anchor of Night Vale Community Radio.) 1) Don’t check your phone at the table: No one likes to hear how millennials are ruining America. Avoid this by hiding your phone from your grandpa. To take extra measures, hide all technology in the house. If there’s no technology, there are no lights to illuminate the look of disappointment on your dad’s face when asked about your GPA. 2) Stick to small talk: To avoid loaded questions that may cause a stir, stick to lighthearted chatter such as what football teams are playing, your favorite movie and Benghazi. If things do get tense, scream, “Isn’t this weather nice?” at the top of your lungs. Repeat the phrase over and over until you seem to be having a mental breakdown. This will distract everyone from asking the deep questions. 3) Smile a lot and hold eye
contact with your guests: Literally do not stop smiling and staring into the eyes of whoever sits across from you. Look deep into their pupils until they get too uncomfortable to continue sitting at the table. For added effect, grind a butter knife into your upper thigh. 4) Pray before your meal: When your grandmother asks you to deliver the yearly Thanksgiving prayer, don’t shy away like you normally do! Hug her and exclaim how happy you would be to bless the food. Once everyone closes their eyes, get creative with it and begin reciting the lyrics to your favorite jam such as “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap. Once everyone’s eyes are open, proceed with the actual prayer as if nothing happened. 5) Don’t forget the turkey: What Thanksgiving feast is complete without a succulent turkey? Turkeys can be purchased online or simply tracked down in wooded areas. Turkeys eat fresh greens, grass and herbs. It is suggested that turkeys are kept outside like large dogs, but can be inside pets if raised from eggs. It is suggested that they are bathed twice a month. They are not as frightening as emus and play well with children. Happy Thanksgiving from the Connect family to yours!w

A classic returns to usher in the holidays "The Nutcracker" celebrates 10 years in Statesboro You know what they say: It's just not Christmas until a Christmas tree magically grows tall on the stage of the Emma Kelly Theater. ... Okay, maybe no one actually says that. But here in Statesboro, we know it to be true as this year sees the return of a classic and favorite production to the Averitt Center for the Arts: "The Nutcracker" ballet, which has become a holiday staple here in the Boro. In fact, this is the 10th time the ballet has been performed in the Emma Kelly Theater. "The Nutcracker" is directed and choreographed by Jurijs Safonovs. Mr. Safonovs is a native of Riga Latvia and the Averitt Center's director of the Statesboro Youth Ballet. Mr. Safonovs will also reprise his roll as the magical Drosselmeyer. “I am so proud of the quality and dedication of these young dancers," Safonovs said. "This is going to be an amazing performance.” The show will feature professional guest artists Norbert Nirewicz and Jennifer Safonovs, Jurijs' wife. Jennifer Safonovs, a native of Akron, Ohio, will dance the rolls of Snow Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy. She currently dances professionally with Neos Dance Theater in Ohio and as a guest artist with preprofessional companies across the nation. As her husband lives here,
she also gets to call Statesboro home as often as possible. Norbert Nirewicz will perform the roles of Snow King and Sugar Plum Cavalier. A native of Poland, Nirewicz portrayed roles in a variety of classical ballets such as "Swan Lake," "Giselle," "Sleeping Beauty" and "La Fille Mal Gardee" in Warsaw and throughout Europe as a dancer for the Polish National Theater. He has also danced with the Ballet Classico de Camara in Venezuela, the Cleveland/San Jose Ballet and the Columbia City Ballet. The cast of over 60 includes professional dancers, pre-professional dancers, children, adults and community actors. The performance will also feature the Statesboro Youth Chorale’s Show Choir, directed by Tamara Watson Harper and conducted by Sarah Hancock. Costume mistress Melinda Roell has designed some beautiful new costumes to add to this visually stunning show. Shows are on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults ($21 for nonmembers) and $10 for all youth. With splendid costumes, festive scenery and a timeless story, "The Nutcracker" will be taking the stage at the Emma Kelly Theater for the 10th time next weekend, Nov. 20–22. Q: Do you focus on Endodontics? A: I do perform endodontics (root canals) regularly, but I do not focus on endodontics exclusively. I am a General Dentist and treat a wide variety of dental problems. In Statesboro, there are two root canal specialists (Endodontists) which come up from Savannah on a rotating daily basis. They restrict their practice to endodontic treatments only. Trojans buckle under Eagles' attack drive that took up most of the fourth quarter is a good way to keep the opponent off the scoreboard. In fact, Troy’s offense only ran 14 plays in the entire second half. It was just an overall dominant performance by Georgia Southern as the Eagles move Brown to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in Sun Belt play. Things get much tougher this week as the Eagles head to Athens to take on the University of Georgia. And Southern must do so without the services of starting cornerback Caleb
Georgia Southern’s offense just couldn’t seem to get going against the two best teams on the schedule to date (West Virginia and Appalachian State). The run game was shut down and those games slowly got away from the Eagles. Georgia Southern will need to do something through the air to be able to stay in this game. Otherwise, a defense of UGA’s caliber is going to be able to stop the run if they know it is coming. The good news for Eagle fans is the passing game showed some signs of life at Troy. And Southern got its top wide receiver back in B.J. Johnson, who missed several weeks due to injury. Tattler Prediction: Georgia’s offense hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire, so with the way the Eagle defense has been playing, Southern could keep this one interesting. But UGA will just be too much in the end. I feel gross saying it, and I would love nothing more than to be wrong … but I’m a realist. Bulldogs 31, Eagles 17 But what do I know? Let’s go shock the world, Eagles!w

After 16 days off, Georgia Southern football finally got to strap on the pads and hit the field Saturday at Troy. The Trojans came into the game with one of the hottest offenses in the conference — possibly even the entire country — and things could Alex not have started any better for the home team Saturday afternoon. Troy received the opening kickoff and marched down the field rather easily, until the drive stalled inside the Eagles’ five-yard line and the Trojans settled for a short field goal. On Georgia Southern’s ensuing drive, an errant pitch on the first play was scooped up by a Trojan defender who walked in for an easy touchdown. It was 10-0 before Southern could blink. Trojan fans wish the game could have ended there: From that point forward, it was all Georgia Southern. The Eagles rattled off 45 unanswered points en route to a 45-10 dismantling of the Trojans. On their opening drive, Troy marched 72 yards down the field. They had just 140 yards of offense for the rest of the night. The Eagles held the ball for a mindblowing 42 minutes and 55 seconds of the 60-minute game. No offensive player really jumps off the stat sheet, but as a team, this may have been the most thorough win of the season. No Eagle hit triple-digits in rushing yardage, but the team put up 325 yards on the ground — well under the season average, but still a pretty good day at the office. Tattler Game Ball: The game ball goes to the defense. Southern’s D clamped down and shut out the Trojans after the opening drive. Troy simply could not move the football. The Eagles also picked off two passes and recovered one Trojan fumble to win the turnover battle 3-1. That unit has played really well of late. In the Eagles’ last two games, the defense has only allowed 16 points. The defense can thank a potent offense which has helped keep them off the field. A methodical, 17-play, 12-minute
Williams for the first half of the game because of a questionable targeting call in the second half against Troy. Sure, he knocked the daylights out of the kid, but he did not hit him in his head and there was nothing dirty about it. In my opinion, it didn’t warrant the ejection, but what’s done is done. Let’s look ahead to UGA. The Bulldogs are coming off a 20-13 win at Auburn and have won two straight games after getting drilled by Florida three weeks ago. This will be the sixth meeting between Georgia Southern and Georgia. UGA has won the previous five by an average margin of 24.8 points. However, it seems that Southern has either been in a rebuilding year and/or UGA has been loaded every time the two have met. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU. Many Bulldog faithful have acted like the sky was falling at times this season, but this is still a pretty doggone good football team. Georgia is 7-3 and will finish second in the SEC East.

Went ‘Left,’ hurrying back GSU alum Shane Nelson finished his coast-to-coast walk last week and now turns to the next part of his project: Putting together a documentary Last summer, on the sandy shore of Tybee Island, Georgia Southern graduate Shane Nelson took the momentous first steps towards his nationwide trek to San Francisco, California. After six months, a dozen states, and countless more steps later, Nelson finally finished his coast-tocoast walk last week on Nov. 12. Counting up to a grand total of 191 days, Nelson’s expedition was documented with his video camera, giving him plenty of footage to use for his Kickstarter-funded film, “Left.” “There was a lot of growth and maturing that took place from start to finish. I know more about myself, my limits and, more importantly, about our country and its people,” Nelson said. “I’ve lost weight both physically and mentally. My definitions for ‘need’ and ‘want’ have changed drastically and I am better for it.”
The last 90 days When we last heard from Nelson, he was heading toward Nebraska with 100 days of walking under his belt. Since then, the last leg of Nelson’s journey has taken him through the states of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada before he finally reached San Francisco, California. Each state gave Nelson an experience unlike any other. For a few of Shane's more noteworthy moments, look at the states below.
What’s left for ‘Left’ Nelson may have finished his walk, and while that’s no easy feat to accomplish, his goals are far from complete. Currently on a flight back to Georgia, Nelson will soon enter the editing stage of “Left,” which focuses on music and, more extensively, humanity.
SHANE NELSON/special
Shane Nelson stands on the shore in San Francisco, California, after literally walking from coast to coast in a 191-day journey that started on Tybee Island last summer. “Music is just one of the focuses of my film. The bigger focus is on the people I have met and their answers to five very specific questions. I ask each person the same five questions, one of which pertains to music and art,” Nelson said. “I have found that music conveys emotion and communicates ideas much more easily than casual conversation.
It is the expression of the soul and can bring people together, no matter their differences. Through interactions with the street musicians I have met, I have noticed how much more meaning is hidden within each word or chord. Every little note tells a story, and you can’t really find that on the radio.” Nelson intends to finish editing

"I spent time connecting with many of the homeless people in Denver. One day I stopped to talk to a young man named Larz. He was a heavy meth user and was binging when I met him. Three train hoppers approached us and asked if Larz could play a song on his phone. They all huddled close around the tiny phone, listening to music. There was something oddly beautiful about the scene.”
Wyoming
“Wyoming was nothing like I expected it to be. It was filled with open land and gorgeous scenery — almost as if untouched by man.”
utah “We camped out in the Salt Flats for a night, which was insane. I stayed up to watch the sunrise and explored the floating island we had camped below. I discovered a set of chairs that had been installed into the rock with a table in the middle. The table had a notebook pad for people to sign. I was the first guest to stumble across ‘Installation Zero,’ which was really cool. It was truly the best seat in the house.”

“The highlight of Nevada was drinking whiskey with a Chinese woman who didn’t know any English. She didn’t get any of my jokes, but we enjoyed each other’s company just fine.”

Lend a hand at the Holiday Helper Tree various other organizations around town and have been for many years. In fact, over 750 names have been submitted as a receiving participant in this year’s event. Students and faculty both have set out to fill in the participant sheet each year (with this year no exception) but the tree is open to local community members and alumni, too. Many offices around town and throughout campus usually adopt several tags (as many as 40 or more) from the tree to buy collectively and even several student organizations have taken on multiple tags to sponsor. There’s no better way to see the love and compassion in the Statesboro community. Maybe one of the best parts is that it’s all completely anonymous. No one is doing it for recognition of any sort, because the gifts are given in complete anonymity. Likewise, to protect those who are receiving gifts, no names or specific facilities are mentioned at any point in the process, ensuring that genuine generosity if the sole reason for such a huge turnout each year. What about you? If you have the means and want to help out an unfortunate individual this holiday season, head out the Russell Union and take a name off of the tree. The tree is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m.–3 p.m. until Nov. 20 and all gifts are due back to the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement wrapped by Dec. 1. Take a little time to spread the holiday cheer this season with the Holiday Helper Tree.w
“Left” by January 2017 and will distribute copies to the Kickstarter backers who have donated the proper amount. Nelson is also considering distributing free copies to some of the many people featured in the film.
“People need windows” Without a doubt, walking across the American landscape is an unforgettable experience; it’s also a challenging enterprise, requiring a phenomenal amount of grit and relentless perseverance. Nelson attributes his success to the continual support he received from family and friends. “I can’t begin to express how thankful I am for all of my friends,
family and even the strangers that have kept me motivated and moving forward,” Nelson said. “As far as this project goes, I need people to understand that this walk wasn’t about accomplishing some great feat — or even about me. The most important thing has been the conversations I have had with all of the people I have met along the way.” He added, “I would much rather be a window than a mirror, letting people see through me and my experience to gain a better understanding of what happiness is and where we are as a society. I hope my film will inspire people to look inside themselves and see their potential. I hope they look at others and see just how alike we all are. Life is too short. We need to explore! Create! And never settle!”w

If you’ve been around Georgia Southern long enough, you’ve probably seen the tree in the Union. It usually has some tags on it with a couple of items an anonymous person would greatly appreciate. And Southern’s generosity usually guarantees that it’s surrounded by willing participants, ready to dive into the spirit of the Holiday Helper Tree. This is the 22nd year that the Holiday Helper tree has been around to bless families and individuals in need around the Statesboro area. Mrs. Eileen Smith, currently a staff member in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, was the first to start the tradition as a way to bring the community together by helping others and it has taken off since then. Now, the tradition is one passed down from faculty, staff, students and alumni as just another way to help out during the holiday season. That’s how it has played out in my own life: As the daughter of an alumni and a former staff member, my childhood was filled with excitement as we got to choose a tag off of the tree and pick out a special gift for someone, give them something they really wanted when they would have otherwise received nothing. One year, we picked a tag for a person who requested a coat, simply because we felt that the least we could do was help someone without even a winter coat. Being fortunate enough to help someone without basic necessities was a great lesson on the true meaning of Christmas spirit. These gifts help people from nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, social service agencies and

Lantern lights will provide a soft and nostalgic glow over choices including dairy products, meats, produce, nuts, eggs, honey, grains, baked goods, casseroles, holiday plants and unique crafts.
There will also be plenty of prepared foods to sample and take home, including chili and brats cooked by the Fresh Market Grille, Hunter Cattle's "world famous" burgers, foods prepared on the Big Green Egg, Jamaican recipes from Caribbean Feast, the Market Sweet Potato Bar, coffee, cider and hot chocolate. James Pittman and Joe Nelson will once again be performing classic bluegrass music on the mainstage. "This is the largest market of the season and an opportunity to find everything you need for memorable holiday meals and gift giving while supporting our local farmers and
vendors," said Debra Chester, the Farmers Market chairwoman. New vendors this year include Three Tree Coffee Roasters, the Savannah Oatmeal Company, Franklin Farm Satsumas and 4 and 20 Bakers. For more information, call (912) 744-7227 or find the event on Facebook at "Shopping by Lantern Light" or visit statesborofarmersmarket.com.w

The Sir Shop
PINTEREST PROJECT — Someone affiliated with Rusty’s Tavern discovered an odd theft recently. The glass door to the business, valued at $700, according to reports, was stolen. Now who would want a bar door? POTTY MOUTH — A woman and her juvenile son were visiting a Bulloch County Jail inmate recently when two others visiting an inmate began using vulgar language. The woman’s juvenile son uttered "Geeze" in response to the foul language, and the offenders turned on him, verbally abusing the boy, so the mother complained to jailers. The trashtalking offenders were made to leave and banned from visiting inmates. YOU CAN HAVE THIS BACK — The Bulloch County Jail often houses inmates from other counties, but when an Evans County inmate was recently found to have a metal “shank” (handmade weapon), he was sent right back
to Evans County, reports stated. WHODUNIT? — When police responded to a domestic dispute, a woman provided a driver’s license for a man involved because she kept his wallet in her purse. The next day she reported a large sum of cash stolen from the man’s wallet, in her purse, and said she suspected two men who stayed the night. The accused men denied talking or even knowing about the cash. THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY — Sharing a duplex can be aggravating if the two tenants are incompatible. One man sharing a Country Club Road duplex complained of the other tenant’s noise, so the supposedly noisy tenant warned the first man he was having friends over. This led to an argument and threats from the first man, who told the noisy man he wished he would “swallow razor blades.” This led to threats of a fight.w

18 Eugenia Last SCORPIO (Oct. 24– Nov. 22) — Think before you get involved in someone else's personal affairs. Strive to be understanding and show compassion, but don't meddle. Take an interest in something or someone unique. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23– Dec. 21) — You can impress others, but make sure that whatever you do or say, you don't embellish or make promises you cannot keep. You are best off working on your own issues or projects. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22– Jan. 19) — If you want something, you should ask for it, but be sure to offer incentives. Your give-and-take attitude will lead to your success. You can close one door and open another. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20–Feb. 19) — Don't say something you'll regret or get into an argument with someone who is ready to fight back. Before engaging in a losing battle, look inward and fine-tune your skills. PISCES (Feb. 20– March 20) — Don't underestimate a job you've been asked to do, or you will end up looking bad. Keep your plans simple and moderate. ARIES (March 21– April 19) — Make plans with someone you love to spend time with and enjoy discovering something new and exciting.
TAURUS (April 20– May 20) — If you are too forgiving or emotionally sensitive, someone will see you as being weak. Regardless of how you feel, refuse to let anyone see your vulnerabilities. GEMINI (May 21–June 20) — Your charm will attract interest in whatever you are trying to pursue, but before you persuade others to contribute to your plans, make sure that what you attempt is realistic. CANCER (June 21– July 22) — Enjoy conversations with family, friends and people you encounter who have a unique or different approach to life, love and happiness. What you learn will help improve your future. LEO (July 23–Aug. 22) — Keep your life in perspective and refuse to be coerced into a debate with someone who chooses to think or do things differently than you. Choose peace over chaos. VIRGO (Aug. 23– Sept. 22) — You will have good ideas, but don't force them on others. If someone does show interest, be skeptical regarding his or her motives. Remain secretive for the time being. LIBRA (Sept. 23– Oct. 23) — If you share your feelings, you will be granted the freedom to live your life as you please. A skill or talent you have deserves a chance to be developed.w
