Kaitlin Olson is ‘The Mick’ in new Fox comedy series Kaitlin Olson hopes the forecast for her new show is as sunny as it’s been for her in “Philadelphia.” The actress brings her sassy persona – well-known to fans of the long-running comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” now on FXX -- to broadcast television in “The Mick,” a Fox sitcom debuting Sunday, Jan. 1, before it assumes its usual Tuesday slot two nights later. Also a coexecutive producer of the series, Olson plays Mickey, a hustler so rough around the edges that she’s a highly unlikely candidate to become a guardian of youngsters … yet she does, when her affluent sister is arrested and promises to get Mickey the money she needs if she’ll mind the kids. The spoiled youths (played by Sofia Black-D’Elia, Thomas Barbusca and Jack Stanton) are full of attitude, but they quickly find they’ve met their match in their estranged Aunt Mickey, whose streetwise sensibility levels the playing field almost immediately. Also a cast regular is Carla Jimenez (“Raising Hope”) as housekeeper Alba, who becomes a major aide to Mickey, and Dave Annable (“Brothers & Sisters”) has a recurring role. “I knew I could make this character special,” the lively and friendly Olson says, “and I was very excited to produce this, so I could cast the people I wanted and be able to give notes. You just have some creative control. Of course, as we get closer to the premiere, I’m flip-flopping: ‘Oh, boy. If people don’t like it, they will not blame the writers or anyone else. This is all on me.’ That’s just my personality, though.” Though “The Mick” is a new project, it keeps Olson in her comfort zone, since she’s working with a number of her “Philadelphia” teammates on it: John Chernin and David Chernin are the creator-writers and serve as executive producers, as does fellow “Philadelphia” veteran Nicholas Frenkel. “That was the reason I did this,” Olson confirms. “I would have been terrified to sign

onto a (broadcast-)network show otherwise, because it’s just not what I’m used to. It feels very safe. “I really think my ‘Sunny’ fans are going to love it, and I’m really hopeful that the people who don’t watch ‘Sunny’ -- or didn’t really give it a chance -- will watch this show simply because it’s on Fox. It’s definitely not as risque, but it’s the same sense of humor and the same tone and a similar vibe. There’s a way to make a family comedy that’s funny and a little bit edgy, and I think we’ve pulled that off.” As “The Mick” starts its run, Olson also will continue to be visible as anger-issued “Sweet Dee” on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” as it begins its 12th season Wednesday, Jan. 4 … with its 13th and 14th rounds already ordered by FXX. The wife of that show’s creator, Rob McElhenney (who’s also a star and executive producer of it), Olson finished her work on Season 12 before diving fully into “The Mick.” “It’s so much fun for me to do ‘Sunny,’ because I’m not doing anything other than acting on it,” she reflects. “They’re long hours, but it’s only 2-1/2 months out of the year, and it flies by because we’re having such a good time. I have a lot more jobs on (‘The Mick’), so I’m doing something pretty much seven days a week. It’s much more intensive, but we’re figuring out our way, and it hopefully will get smoother and smoother.” The Jan. 1 premiere of “The Mick” is scheduled after an NFL doubleheader, so Fox clearly is positioning it for maximum exposure. While that obviously pleases Olson, she reasons, “I just wanted it to be the show I wanted to make. As long as that part is there, whatever else happens is fine with me. It really is, but I’m very proud of this. I think it’s very funny.”

“12 Angry Men” (1957) Being remembered this week in a PBS “American Masters” profile, Lumet moved from directing television dramas to guiding theatrical films with this searing jury-deliberation drama (adapted, ironically, from a TV play) produced by principal star Henry Fonda. “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (1962) Tackling a (or, to some people, “the”) defining Eugene O’Neill work was a brave move for someone still young in his moviemaking, but Lumet drew indelible performances from Katharine Hepburn and Jason Robards. “The Hill” (1965) In the first of the multiple movies he made with Lumet, Sean Connery took a very effective break from the world of Agent 007 as an incarcerated British soldier subjected to grueling punishment in an intense heat that the viewer also ends up feeling. “The Group” (1966) Lumet’s take on Mary McCarthy’s novel is soap opera of a very high grade, with Candice Bergen, Joan Hackett and Jessica Walter

among those depicting the lives and loves of students at a private school pre-World War II. “The Offence” (1973) A gritty melodrama he got financed in exchange for returning as James Bond in “Diamonds Are Forever,” Connery excels for Lumet as a dispirited British police detective who reaches the end of his rope during his questioning of an alleged child molester. “Serpico” (1973) A run of holiday-season hits for Lumet over several consecutive years began with the true story of an honest New York police detective (superbly played by Al Pacino) who risked his life by turning informant on corrupt peers. “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974) Lumet’s wonderfully stylish version of the Agatha Christie mystery is – just as the ads promised – “the who’s who in the whodunit,” encompassing everyone from Albert Finney (as master sleuth Hercule Poirot) and Connery to Lauren Bacall and Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman. “Dog Day Afternoon” (1975) Pacino and Lumet

BY JAY BOBBIN collaborated on another fact-based tale, the saga of a bank robbery gone extremely awry ... with surprises about the reason behind the attempted heist eventually emerging. “Network” (1976) Fueled by Paddy Chayefsky’s take-no-prisoners script, the Lumet-directed indictment of the TV-news business (which time has made seem less like satire) was rewarded with Academy Awards for the writer and performers Peter Finch (posthumously), Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight. “Prince of the City” (1981) Lumet revisited the theme of an honest cop turned whistleblower with this long but engrossing drama, another true story with marvelous acting by Treat Williams and a supporting cast including Jerry Orbach and Bob Balaban. “The Verdict” (1982) Paul Newman gives arguably his career-high performance for Lumet as a downtrodden lawyer given a chance at personal and professional redemption by a case he decides to try rather than settle.
