‘Knick’

Before there were such medical conveniences as antibiotics, there was “The Knick.” New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital is the setting of the early-1900s Cinemax drama series from executive producers including Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic”), also the show’s director. Premiering Friday, Aug, 8, it stars Clive Owen as skilled but arrogant chief surgeon John Thackery, who uses primitive treatments – even on himself, for his drug addiction – while engaging in office politics. “It was one of those scripts that reminds you of why you do what you do, really,” Owen says of the pilot by “Knick” creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler. “Steven had called me and told me a little bit about it, and while I was shooting something else and sitting in my trailer, I started to read it ... and 40 minutes later, I’d read the whole thing and just knew there was no way I wasn’t going to do it.” Also in the “Knick” acting ensemble: Andre Holland as the hospital trustees’ pick for assistant chief surgeon over Thackery’s own (Eric Johnson, “Rookie Blue”); Juliet Rylance (“Sinister”) as the chairperson of the trustees; Eve Hewson, a daughter of rock star Bono, as an inexperienced nurse; Michael Angarano as a surgical newcomer to the Knick; and, briefly, Matt Frewer as Thackery’s chief-surgeon forerunner.

Also given its early-20th-century atmosphere (boasting a wardrobe by veteran movie costumer Ellen Mirojnick), Owen points to “The Knick” being “so brilliantly researched and so informative in everything. It’s all inspired by real events. The world of medicine at that time was hugely exciting; that was a crucial time for it.” It also was a graphic time, gauging by the way “The Knick” depicts operations. Owen allows the first such scene was “greeted with these sorts of ‘ooh’s’ and ‘aah’s’ ” from foreign buyers at an early screening of the premiere, “but the reality is, that was how (surgeons) did things then. We had this amazing expert we just leaned on so much; he knew the historical accuracy, so it’s not a blood-fest just for the sake of it.” Already renewed for Season 2, “The Knick” gives Owen his first continuing television role since attaining movie stardom (“Closer,” “Sin City”), but it’s not his first series. In his native England, he appeared in “Chancer,” “Sharman” and the “Second Sight” mystery franchise. “It’s really a chance to explore much more fully and deeply than you would get in a 90-minute movie,” Owen reasons. “You also can take risks and do more things with your character, so having this length of time is a real luxury.”

One week after the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted new members into its hallowed halls in Cooperstown, New York, its pro football counterpart did the same thing in Canton, Ohio. The bonus for NFL fans is that Hall of Fame weekend also means the official start of the NFL preseason. On Saturday, Aug. 2 seven former NFL greats were inducted: Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks; Oakland Raiders punter Ray Guy; Claude Humphrey, a defensive end for the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles; Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Walter Jones; Buffalo Bills wide receiver Andre Reed; New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan; and Aeneas Williams, a cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams. That’s the 2014 class of Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sunday, Aug. 3, the NFL season gets underway when the Bills and Giants face off in the Hall of Fame Game, which will be televised by NBC in an evening broadcast. Although preseason games mean very little, these two teams have some major questions dangling over their heads. In New York, the Giants want to get back on track after two very frustrating seasons. Two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning would like to see his team and himself return to Super Bowl form. They’ll need to if they want to compete in the NFC East.

a fun, quirky hybrid based on a culinary TV favorite

“Top Chef Duels,” which premieres Wednesday, Aug. 6, on Bravo, presents an entertaining new slant on the network’s Emmy-winning “Top Chef.” “The show is sort of a hybrid of ‘Top Chef’ ... crossed with a format we started a few years ago online for our ‘Last Chance Kitchen,’ which brings back eliminated chefs,” explains Gail Simmons, who anchors the judges’ table along with host Curtis Stone. “What we’ve done on ‘Top Chef Duels’ is, every episode stands alone. Each episode has two chefs facing off in three cooking segments.” The first two segments are “mini-duels” between the two chefs, each of whom gets to pick the nature of one mini-duel, ideally designed to play up to his own strengths and exploit his opponent’s weakness. The winner of each mini-duel wins $10,000 on the spot. In the main duel that follows, both chefs are required to cook a three-course meal for Simmons, Stone and the guest judges of that episode. The winner of that duel moves on to compete with 9 other winners in the season finale. But wait, there’s more! The losing chef each week gets a chance to claim a spot in the finale via “The Knockout,” an online competition hosted by Wolfgang Puck, similar in concept to “Last Chance Kitchen,” the online component of “Top Chef.” The ultimate winner of the season finale wins the $100,000 grand prize and a “culinary adventure” featured in Food and Wine Magazine. “That really depends on who the winner is,” Simmons says of the culinary adventure. “The magazine is working out what that will be, but it will be a very exciting trip that then will become a story in the magazine.” Is there a logic behind how the chefs were paired up for “Top Chef Duels”? “Absolutely, all of them were matched up very specifically, either because they cook very similar styles or they had a rivalry when they were on the show together, or they could even be related. Our first episode has Richard Blais and Marcel Vigneron, both of whom were known in their individual seasons as the ‘mad scientists.’ They’re both very modernist chefs and employ a lot of modern techniques.”

OF “WORKING THE ENGELS” ON NBC •“Working the Engles” turned out to be an “SCTV” reunion of sorts, with Martin Short and Eugene Levy making guest appearances. How was it working with these old friends again?

We were in Toronto and that’s where we shot “SCTV,” so it did feel like no time had passed and here we were on a soundstage in Toronto making each other laugh. I don’t know, in some ways it feels like we’ve all certainly gone off and done different things in our careers, but the bond was so tight when we did “SCTV,” it just felt like there was no effort, I guess, in our acting together. •Your character on “Engels,” Ceil, is very protective of her adult children.

Yes, yes. I’ve tried over the years not to be so enabling (laughs), so it was actually interesting to do this character over the course of 12 shows and see maybe the overly protective love I’ve had for my own sons and the danger that happens when you do that – they can’t think for themselves. So it was kind of therapeutic as well as entertaining. •Executive producer Katie Ford said you bring a warmth to the dismissive lines Ceil utters. Is that by design?

Yes, you know it was important to me really not to do that. I think it’s a pitfall that maybe ... comedies require that kind of arch or maybe that’s a characteristic of a lot of older women on camera, that arch kind of putdown, sarcastic delivery, and God knows I can do that. But it was important to me to stay clear of that, actually, and to try to find a genuine love for my children. That’s what I set out to do, and God knows they honored that.

TV has been Berry good to ‘Extant’ star

Q: I’m enjoying watching Halle Berry in “Extant.” Has she done television before? – Julie Smith, Buffalo, N.Y. A: In fact, that’s where her acting career began. The former model was among the regulars on a short-lived 1989 ABC spinoff of “Who’s the Boss?” called “Living Dolls,” about a modeling agency. Her role in that – as she amusingly described it to us when her current CBS series began – basically consisted of her entering a scene by saying, “Hi, everybody!,” then ending it by saying, “Come on, let’s go!” Guest shots on “A Different World” and “Amen” followed, then a longer stay on “Knots Landing.” Berry then shifted her main attention to feature films, but TV movies also stayed in the mix for her with such efforts as the Oprah Winfrey-produced “The Wedding” and “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” Berry’s top home-screen effort up to now arguably was a 1999 HBO biography that she also produced, “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge,” for which she won a number of acting awards including an Emmy. That film was co-written by Shonda Rhimes, now a major television force as the maker of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and ABC’s forthcoming “How to Get Away With Murder.” Q: Can you tell me what the status of “King & Maxwell” is? Has it been canceled, or will it be back? – Paul Johnson, Fayetteville, N.C. A: It was one-and-done for the mystery series, which TNT canceled after its maiden run of episodes. Its stars have already moved onto other projects; Jon Tenney joined ABC’s “Scandal” last season, and Rebecca Romijn is staying with TNT by appearing in an upcoming series inspired by the cable network’s “Librarian” TV movies. When Dave Carraro isn’t plying the waters off Gloucester, Mass., looking for giant bluefin tuna on National Geographic Channel’s Sunday hit “Wicked Tuna,” he can be found flying the friendly skies above the U.S. East Coast as a pilot for JetBlue. Which can make for some interesting reactions when he comes out of the cockpit in his pilot togs at flight’s end to thank passengers for flying his airline. “I always say people are very good at facial recognition,” Carraro, a 49-year-old native of New Jersey, says. “They will look at me getting on and off the airplane and they won’t say anything but they’ll stare because I’m out of context. When I’m in my uniform, they’re just looking at my face. They know me from somewhere but they’re not sure where.” “It’s pretty comical,” he continues. “because they’ll look at me the whole way up the aisle, they won’t say anything, and they’ll get off the airplane and then they’ll do a double-take. They’ll look back and they’ll either disappear up into the jet bridge or they’ll come back and say, ‘Now I know where I know you from.’ ” “Ten percent of people figure it out but they say, ‘I had no idea you were a pilot also.’ ”
