'Race' to open GSU theatre season The Theatre & Performance program at Georgia Southern University kicks off its season Sept. 24 with David Mamet’s Race; A Play in the Center for Art & Theatre’s Black Box Theatre. Race explores the tension between perception and intent when a law firm of three attorneys, two black and one white, defend a white man charged with a crime against a black woman. Thought-provoking and challenging, the play raises questions about how each of us perceives race in today’s world and will leave audiences with more questions than answers. The program will be including post-show discussions on Thursday, Sept. 25, and Wednesday, Oct. 1, starting about 10 minutes after the performance. Theatre & Performance audiences will recognize actors Whitaker Gardner and Tatyana Arrington from last year’s

production of Hamlet when they played opposite one another as Claudius and Gertrude. New to the Black Box stage are actors V. Akil Jackson and Harry Hudgins, who round out the cast. Student designers complete the production team with Lawrence Hancock as scenic designer and Loren “Zo” Haynes overseeing costumes and lighting design. Race; A Play opens Wednesday, Sept. 24, and runs through Wednesday, Oct. 1. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee performance on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. Running time is without intermission and approximately 75 minutes. The play is recommended for mature audiences because of language and content. Student and youth tickets are $5; faculty, staff and community tickets are $10. Call the Box Office at (912) 478-5379 to make reservations.w

LOOK AT HIGHLIGHTS GEORGIA SOUTHERN VS. Georgia Tech 9/13/14

Loss to Jackets may hurt odds against Jaguars This one stings. And yes, pun intended. Georgia Southern traveled to Georgia Tech for the first time ever and came so close to beating the Yellow Jackets, but had its heart broken with just seconds left on the clock. The Eagles found themAlex selves in a 35-10 hole at halftime, but they kept fighting. Southern rattled off 28 unanswered points in the second half to take a 38-35 lead late into the fourth quarter but could not hold on. Tech scored with 23 seconds on the clock and squeaked out a 42-38 win. For a while, things looked pretty bleak for the boys in blue. The Jackets were moving the ball and scoring almost at will in the first half, while the Eagles simply could not get anything going offensively or make a stop on defense. The second half was a completely different ballgame. Southern marched

down the field on its opening drive and cut into the lead. The defense forced a threeand-out to get the ball back, and a quick four-play scoring drive made it a game again at 35-24. The Eagles scored twice more while the defense continued to come up big. Brown By early in the fourth quarter, GSU led 38-35 and Southern had all the momentum. Bobby Dodd Stadium was absolutely rocking and the Georgia Tech fans weren’t making a sound. Eagle Nation showed up in force. It would have been an enormous win for the Georgia Southern program, but unfortunately, it was just not to be for the Eagles. Tattler Game Ball: I have to give this week’s game ball to the coaching staff. Down 35-10 at halftime, this team could have given up, but the coaches obviously made the right adjustments — offensive and defensive — at the half. And they never let this

Georgia Southern tight end Nardo Govan (42) is helped off the field after being injured against Georgia Tech during the second half of a football game, Saturday, Sept. 13, in Atlanta. group of Eagles quit. As a side note, Georgia Southern is about two minutes of game action away from being 3-0. The Eagles have turned the ball over just twice all season. And boy, have those two fumbles hurt. Southern just needs to learn to finish. As hard as that loss is to swallow after being so close to pulling off the upset, the Eagles must put Saturday behind them and look ahead to South Alabama. Georgia Southern will travel to Mobile, Alabama Saturday evening for its first-ever Sun Belt conference game. Although Southern is not eligible for a bowl invitation, the Eagles can still win a conference championship this season — and that quest begins this weekend. South Alabama is 1-1 on the season and the Jaguars are coming off a 35-3 home loss to Mississippi State. They opened their season with a 23-13 win at Kent State. Honestly, this one worries me a bit. It’s going to be tough for Georgia Southern to bounce back after such a draining game, both emotionally and physically. The Eagles had several key guys go down to injury Saturday. Hopefully they are not seriously hurt and can come back, but unfortunately, a few of them didn’t look so good. I like the fight in this team. They are hungry. Even after a heartbreaking loss, I feel like this coaching staff will have the team focused on South Alabama. The Jaguars will be tough, but I like the Eagles. Tattler Prediction: Get the blood pressure medicine back out, Eagle fans. Eagles 31, Jaguars 27w

Microsoft buys Minecraft developer want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he's made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle." Webb Notch himself wrote about his decision to move on after the deal is complete on his own personal blog. "I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I'm a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter," he wrote. "As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I'll probably abandon it immediately. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it's belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change." With a huge gaming fan base that has toppled 100 million downloads on PC alone, Minecraft has grown to be one of the most successful indie games of all time. Joining with Microsoft should only solidify and help Mojang grow over the long run in both gaming and other areas. What causes a hangover, anyway? Brittani Howell

Never Hungover: Too good to be true? All people have their go-to hangover cure: the greasy food therapy, the take-an-aspirin-anddrink-a-bathtub treatment or a little hair of the dog that bit you. However, a Statesboro local is claiming that his enterprise has found the elusive foolproof cure in the form of a vitamin supplement. Never Hungover, a new drink that is becoming wildly popular in the bar and party scene across the U.S., claims to stop a hangover before it even happens.

The story Never Hungover CEO Parrish Whitaker first encountered the product as a vitamin supplement and antioxidant formula. His sister had been diagnosed with lupus and, in an attempt to save her, Whitaker’s father donated his kidney to her. Their family's holistic doctor prescribed the antioxidant to speed up their recovery process, and to show support, the rest of the family started taking the formula as a daily vitamin supplement. Whitaker realized not long afterward that while he was taking the supplement, he stopped having hangovers after drinking. That was where Smith Baggett came in. Baggett, a Statesboro bull rider who has appeared regularly at local rodeos, was working with marketing companies to ease his transition out of bull riding. He had lots of time to think and dream up marketing projects during the long hours he spent on the road, driving cross-country from rodeo to rodeo. When Baggett heard that his friend had ceased having hangovers thanks to the antioxidant, a lightbulb went on in his head.

Through his company, All-In Marketing, Baggett began working with Whitaker to market the antioxidant as a preventative measure against hangovers and to place it in major retail stores. Now Whitaker’s partner at Never Hungover, Baggett has been marketing around

Well, to be perfectly honest, experts aren't 100 percent sure. In fact, the National Institutes of Health write, "Hangovers are a frequent, though unpleasant, experience among people who drink to intoxication. Despite the prevalence of hangovers, however, this condition is not well understood scientifically." Which, of course, is massively unfortunate for those among us who sometimes get a bit overexcited when it comes to the bubbly stuff. However, the NIH has also put together a list of possible contributing factors to hangovers.

Statesboro in the past few weeks, before and after Never Hungover had its official rollout in Georgia on Aug. 28. Several stores, including the Fast and Easy convenience stores near Georgia Southern’s campus, are now carrying the little red-and-white bottles. “It’s catching on like crazy,” Baggett said in an interview back in August, just before GSU's move-in weekend. “School’s not even in, and the students are just blowing through it.” It tastes like a lemon-lime energy drink and won't interfere with a drinker's buzz. The product has had plenty of celebrity endorsement, and bars and bloggers are giving it their stamp of approval. But for any party-going student of Georgia Southern, the big question should be: Does Never Hungover actually work?

The claims

Never Hungover cites the toxin acetaldehyde, which is produced in your liver during the process of breaking down alcohol, as the primary cause of hangovers. According to its website, Never Hungover helps an individual's body break down acetaldehydes into acetic acid, which is then processed and disposed of — essentially catalyzing a process that happens naturally in the body. Furthermore, the product claims that its "proprietary blend of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals also hydrate the body and restore vital

— Direct effects of alcohol: • dehydration • electrolyte imbalance • gastrointestinal disturbances • low blood sugar • sleep and biological rhythm disturbances — Alcohol withdrawal — Alcohol metabolism (i.e., acet aldehyde toxicity) — Nonalcohol effects • compounds other than alcohol in beverages, espe cially methanol • use of other drugs • personality type • family history for alcoholism

nutrients." In order for the product to work, customers are instructed to take one bottle of Never Hungover for every four drinks consumed, before or while drinking. Articles on the National Institutes of Health website correlate with Never Hungover's basic science behind the understanding of a hangover. Even so, the NIH reports, "Despite the prevalence of hangovers," this condition "is not well understood scientifically." Perhaps this is why there hasn't been much input from the medical community regarding whether or not the product can actually affect your body's process of breaking down alcohol.

The skeptics At Connect's request, Dr. C. Allen Scott, the director of emergency services at Statesboro's East Georgia Regional Medical Center, took a look at Never Hungover's ingredients, website and product reviews. "From what I can tell, there is no hard science that can recommend the product as a treatment or a preventative treatment for hangovers," Dr. Scott said. In Scott's opinion and in many articles on the National Institutess of Health's website, individuals have a very personalized reaction to alcohol that can vary from day to day. Factors such as what one has eaten, stress levels and sleep deprivation all play into how an individual will process alcohol in any amount, which in turn will determine whether or not he or she gets a hangover. That's not to mention height, weight and regular alcohol consumption,

The defense "Of course, I respect anyone's opinion. Especially a doctor's,"

Baggett said in response to Scott's criticisms. Additionally, he pointed out, a medical doctor and a holistic doctor "usually have different opinions." "I guess I could use [Scott's] argument for a daily vitamin," Baggett said. "How does a one-aday work for everyone? Why does a 100-pound person take one and a 300-pound person take one? Then, when I thought about it long and hard, I decided I will ask the people that have purchased over one million Never Hungovers. I'll get back to you when I'm done."

The verdict

It appears, then, that the jury is out in the case of Never Hungover. Of course, you can always try the product out for yourself. The twoounce bottles of Never Hungover — which should safeguard you against four drinks — are available in Fast & Easy convenience stores for $3.50 a bottle. You can even mix it with a little hair of the dog for a Never Hungover cocktail. And if it doesn't work, you always have your go-to hangover cure to fall back on.w

which all play a role in hangovers. In Scott's opinion, there are too many variables for a single product to work across the board for everyone. As a dietary supplement, Scott said Never Hungover was about as good as "any other multivitamin or antioxidant, or any other good nutritional supplement you would want to take." By itself, the drink is, at the very least, harmless. "The only harmful possibility would be if one would think you could drink more as a result of taking the product. The only surefire way of avoiding a hangover is not to overindulge, and to drink responsibly," Scott said. Aside from a brief appearance on the CBS show The Doctors and a "Doctor Trusted" seal on the website, there are few to no medical endorsements or criticisms of the product readily available. Additionally, the product is not approved by the Food and Drug association — and according to Baggett, the company is not pursuing that approval.

The Warner Bros.’ feelgood film “Dolphin Tale 2” debuted in second place at the box ofice with $16.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Associated Press

'No Good Deed' defeats 'Guardians' — finally LOS ANGELES — It took a murderous Idris Elba and a pair of dolphin buddies to defeat Guardians of the Galaxy at movie theaters. The Sony thriller No Good Deed, which stars Elba as an escaped convict and Taraji P. Henson as the innocent he terrorizes, opened on top of the box office with $24.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. And Sony wasn't surprised. "It's a movie that we really loved and felt that it was going to win," said Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer. "You have to give it to the cast in Idris and Taraji. Their chemistry together

is fantastic." The film nearly doubled its reported budget in its first week of release, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. "It's the first brand new, postsummer release to really catch on," he said. The Warner Bros.' feel-good film Dolphin Tale 2 debuted in second place with $16.5 million. The familyfriendly story stars Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd reprising their roles from the 2011 original. Guardians slipped to third place

Eugenia Last VIRGO (Aug. 23–Sept. 22) — Be willing to accommodate as many people as you can in order to become a mediator. Your vision will be viewed as practical, allowing you to manipulate the outcome. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 23) — This is not a good time to enter into a joint venture. Family relationships and friendships will suffer if you attempt to put together collaborative business partnerships. Do your own thing. SCORPIO (Oct. 24–Nov. 22) — Establish new professional or social partnerships. Your projects will take shape if you pay attention to detail, but don't share your ideas until your plans are underway. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23–Dec. 21) — If you are unsettled about money matters, get a professional or second-party assessment of your financial concerns. It is your responsibility to provide for your future. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22–Jan. 19) — You will be riding an emotional roller coaster today. Take some time for a road trip or change of scenery to temporarily distract you from problems that need time to improve.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20–Feb. 19) — You can't move ahead if you keep looking back. Inject some fresh ideas into your routine. Personal, educational or professional pursuits will result in lucrative, stimulating changes. PISCES (Feb. 20–March 20) — Romance is in the air. If you widen your circle of friends, you will discover a unique way to develop professional or personal partnerships with upwardly mobile individuals. ARIES (March 21–April 19) — You have a vivid imagination. Don't get hung up on one project or issue; dealing with a variety of situations will help you complete so much more. TAURUS (April 20– May 20) — Be realistic. If you find yourself floundering, ask for help. Swallow your pride if it will help you get ahead. Stubbornness will not get you where you need to be. GEMINI (May 21–June 20) — Take a peek at the possibilities that surround you. Creativity and romance are highlighted and should take top priority. Share your affection with someone special in order to enhance your relationship.

million, followed by the Fox comedy "Let's Be Cops," which collected $4.3 million. Fox Searchlight's crime drama The Drop, which stars Tom Hardy and the late James Gandolfini, opened in sixth place with $4.2 million — an impressive showing given it only played in 809 theaters.w

CANCER (June 21–July 22) — Someone will try to thwart your financial plans. Be aware of where and to whom your personal information is available. Caution is key, so don't share your secrets.

LEO (July 23–Aug. 22) — Follow through with your plans. Don't feel that you have to explain yourself to people who don't share your vision. Be on guard and stay on track in order to reach your goal.w

Holli Saxon Deal BURGLAR BEAT DOWN — A man found an intruder in his Red Hill Church Road home recently, and when he asked what he was doing there, the dude said “nothing.” Then, the homeowner took matters into his own hands and started “ wrestling and striking” the intruder until he fled, leaving in a car waiting by the road. COVERING THE BASES — A Church Street resident told police recently that someone broke in and stole a quart jar of spaghetti sauce and a bottle of blood pressure pills. That way, if the sauce proved too spicy, the offender had meds to help.

UNDERAGE CRACKDOWN — Following the recent death of a GSU student after a physical attack by a bouncer at a local bar, Statesboro police have conducted several alcohol compliance checks at numerous clubs near the university campus. Both the victim and offender in the recent death were under 21. Last week police cited (arrested) several underage people who had been drinking alcohol. Some servers were also cited for selling alcohol to underage patrons and a couple people were cited for possession of a false identification document (fake ID). Police are expected to continue routine alcohol compliance checks at various locations throughout the city.w
