The Georgia Southern Center for Sustainability (CfS) is taking over the Bulloch County courthouse lawn on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the third annual GreenFest event. This celebration of sustainable activities is sure to have everyone in the community going green. “GreenFest is community celebration of sustainability where participants can arrive with questions and walk away with solutions in hand,” said Lissa Leege, Ph.D., director of CfS. “We have many new vendors and workshops this year, and the live music and festival atmosphere will be fun for everyone!” The free community event will include exhibits, vendors, workshops, live music and activities for all ages, including GreenFest workshops to help save green while living green. The CfS encourages everyone to participate in sustainable activities such as creating a bee house, tie-dying and creating an
aquaponic garden during GreenFest. This year GreenFest will feature a pallet challenge to entice competition for sustainable creativity. Teams or individuals can pick up used pallets, create something new and unique and enter the competition for the best idea. A “celebrity panel” will judge the final creations during GreenFest and announce the winners at noon. For more information on the pallet challenge, visit http://academics.georgiasouthern.edu/sustainability/palletchallenge/. “I'm especially looking forward to our inaugural pallet challenge this year to see what our creative community has designed from used wood pallets,” said Leege. Last year GreenFest drew more than 1,200 visitors and 40 vendors. For a full list of vendors and activities for GreenFest, visit http:// academics.georgiasouthern.edu/sustainability/events/greenfest/.w

Retired psychology professor Harry Hughes has turned his lifetime obsession with America's master of macabre into an hour-long storytelling event, "PoeSpeak," and he's bringing it to the Averitt Center for the Arts Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. himself is so enthusiastic about the tales. As already mentioned, he enjoys exploring and performing the unsettling and over-the-top figures in Poe’s stories, delving into the creative side rather than physical side of psychology — which was the field he pursued professionally, having received his Ph.D. in biopsychology. Whatever the reason, Hughes’ enthusiasm for the shows is infectious, especially for an audience that comes ready to be scared and thrilled. “I don’t think Poe is actually an excellent writer,” Hughes confessed. “I think he’s a good writer, but what I think he is great at is storytelling. His stories are really, I’ve always

He had touchdown runs of 83 and 66 yards, which gives him 11 touchdowns of 50+ yards since the start of last season. This guy is fun to watch. This week, the Eagles fly to the University of Louisiana at Monroe. It’s Brown not quite as far from home as Idaho, but Monroe is still not exactly right down the street. And the Warhawks should be a much better team than Idaho. This one scares me, being the second leg of back-to-back long road trips. Plus, Monroe nearly ruined the Eagles’ perfect Sun Belt record in last season’s finale, but Southern survived with a 22-16 win at Paulson. The Warhawks have likely not forgotten that game they probably felt they should have won. They will be geared up to redeem themselves for letting last season’s matchup slip away. Last week, Monroe got shut out at Alabama 34-0 in a game where they were held to just 92 yards of total offense. Granted, ‘Bama was angry coming off a home loss to Ole Miss. UL Monroe is now 1-2 on the season with a 47-0 win over FCS Nicholls State and a 51-14 loss at Georgia along with Saturday’s loss in Tuscaloosa. Tattler Prediction: This game makes me nervous. Southern got banged up a little at Idaho. Several guys had some apparent injuries, hopefully none too serious. After a physical game and a long road trip, this game is a quick turnaround to go back on the road against what should be a tougher opponent. I feel like this is going to be one of those not-very-pretty, grind-itout-type games. But Southern will pull it out after stressing out Eagle Nation all Saturday night. Eagles 28, Warhawks 23 Keep it rolling, Eagles!w

That’s how you want to start conference play. Anytime you can pick up a conference win on the road, it’s a good day. This conference win was all the way on the other side of the country, so it was really nice to escape Idaho with a Alex victory. And not to toot my own horn, but last week my prediction was pretty doggone close. I said 45-19; Georgia Southern beat the Vandals 44-20. However, I will admit, I called for the Eagles to jump out to a big lead early and cruise to a win. That was not the case. Southern seemed determined to throw the ball in the first half — 14 pass attempts is usually about a full game’s total for the Eagles. Maybe the coaching staff just wants to keep teams honest to open up the run, which is obviously the Eagles’ bread and butter. Maybe they just wanted to try to kick-start the passing game which hasn’t exactly set the world on fire thus far. Whatever it was, 5-for-14 with 87 yards through the air didn’t exactly provide the fast start I predicted. Three first-half drives stalled and resulted in field goals. Southern led 16-13 at halftime thanks in part to an 83-yard touchdown run by Matt Breida. Georgia Southern had its way with Idaho in the second half. The Eagles finished with 568 total yards of offense — 460 on the ground. Breida leads the country in yards per carry (10.9). He averages a first down every time he runs it. That’s just ridiculous. He also ranks sixth nationally in total yards with 589, but has done so on just 54 carries. Tattler Game Ball: Well, it’s really hard not to give the game ball to Breida. All he did Saturday night was rack up 179 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just 12 carries.

Live the basketball dream with 'NBA 2K16' Developer Visual Concepts and publisher 2K Sports have released the ultimate basketball simulation game with NBA 2K16. The amount of detail in this year’s iteration of the game series is unbelievable and gamers will be Tim delighted with the results, such as Steph Curry playing with his mouthpiece and Chris Bosh videobombing post-game interviews. 2K16 is by far the most detailed basketball game to date. Visual Concepts has said that they added over 10,000 new animations to the video game, and it’s apparent once you start playing. Players move more realistically in the game and also feel
heavier — they don’t glide or slide around the court as often as they do in past 2K games. The controls have been updated, giving players more precision for passes, lobs and more. Teams will realistically run plays and handle the ball as they do in Webb real life. There has also been a huge improvement to the AI defense, rendering the opponents less susceptible to exploits. Playing against them is actually a challenge now. The AI defense adapts over time, so gamers will not be able to run the same plays over and over again. 'Pillowman' dwells on dark side of storytelling Grim tales and gallows humor mark latest endeavor at Center for Art & Theatre horrible often come hand in hand. As Newell puts it, this style of dark humor “is kind of a symptom of the age we’re in.” “There are a lot of things that go on in the world that are kind of dark or gruesome … and how we deal with that in art is a main issue the play brings up,” Newell said. “What is the value and nature of art? What is appropriate and what is not appropriate to say? And of course, to make that point,” he said, chuckling, “we’re going to go pretty far.” Rounding out Newell’s main cast of four actors is Greg Hernandez, who will portray the writer Katurian. Hernandez appeared as Khlestakov in last fall’s production of The Government Inspector, Laertes in a recent production of Hamlet and several other roles in CAT performances. This will be his last performance before he graduates.

guage, The Pillowman is not a show for younger audience members. Additionally, audiences should be prepared for a long night — the show clocks in at about two hours, although it will likely feel like a much shorter span of time. “I think part of the reason it isn’t grueling is that it’s actually really, really funny,” Newell said. “It’s just funny in a very dark way.” The Pillowman will run Wednesday, Sept. 30 through Wednesday, Oct. 7. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. There will be no show on Monday, Oct. 5. Tickets are $12 for community members and $6 for youth and GSU students. Georgia Southern’s Center for Art and Theatre is taking a dark turn for its first show of the season. Their weeklong run of The Pillowman, by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, dives straight into some of the darkest impulses of the human psyche in a story structured around a series of gruesome child murders. But don’t worry — it’s actually a comedy. “If you like Quentin Tarantino, you’ll definitely like it. It’s very much gallows humor,” said director Nicholas Newell, an assistant professor in GSU’s communication arts department. Newell — whose past CAT directing credits include The Government Inspector and The Mountaintop, among others — has had his eye on this particular show for years, having seen both the American and Russian premieres of the play. He calls McDonagh “one of the more important playwrights of the times,” making him a challenging and relevant writer for the CAT’s young actors to tackle — particularly in Pillowman. While many of McDonagh’s plays are set in rural Ireland, Pillowman takes place in an unnamed police state. In The Pillowman, a writer named Katurian is seized and held for questioning when it is found that a series of gruesome child murders bears an uncanny resemblance to the content of Katurian’s stories — disturbing, twisted fairy tales that put the “grim” in “Grimm.” Framed around Katurian’s interrogation at the hands of two police officers, Tupolski and Ariel, the story gradually unfolds many of Katurian’s tales (and the murders they may have inspired) and the past he shares with his brother, Michal, who is also implicated in the crimes. You may be asking: How is this supposed to be funny? Where is the humor in this kind of story? The elements seem incompatible, but in McDonagh’s plays, the humorous and
Newell cast Hernandez partly because of his natural talent for storytelling, which lends itself well to Katurian’s character: The author has several long monologues in which he spins out the dark fairy tales that have landed him in the interrogation room, and Hernandez has taken them in stride. As an actor, Hernandez said this role has stretched him farther than any he has undertaken before, pushing him to experience the full spectrum of emotion onstage — including breaking down in tears. “This was a huge breakthrough for (Katurian) as a character and me as an actor,” Hernandez said. “I’ve learned so much.” Viewers should know that, because of thematic material and strong lan-

Pooler-born country artist Jared Wade, the GA Music Awards' 2013 Country Male Vocalist of the Year, will be playing at the "Country for the Cause" cancer awareness concert at the Averitt Center for the Arts Friday, Oct. 2.
Jared Wade takes stage for 'Country for the Cause' Local fans may know country artist Jared Wade from his performances at Rude Rudy's, where he used to perform most evenings when Georgia Southern had a home football game. They may also know him from his mellow acoustic sets in Tubby's on River Street in Savannah, where he would perch on a stool and tell stories in front of the mic. But on Oct. 2, fans will get to see him perform with his full band right here on his home turf — completely for free. Wade will be the featured performer in the South Georgia Center for Cancer Care's memorial celebration, "Country for the Cause." The free concert is being hosted to celebrate cancer survivors and honor lost loved ones, along with the friends, families and caregivers who have supported them. Wade has been an unofficial go-to entertainer for the group since he first played an event for them in Statesboro about four years ago. Wade hails from Pooler, but he now makes his home in Nashville
as he chases the neon dream in the country music capitol. Wade splits his weeks equally between performing onstage and writing songs to shop out to bigger artists. While he enjoys listening to a wide variety of genres and can write songs of many different styles, he prefers to keep his own sets country-based. "I'm a sucker for old, slow country ballads," Wade said. His song "I Knew" fits that description, but it's his more upbeat songs that have grabbed the most attention, from his most recent single "Georgia Off My Mind" to "Drunk on Sunshine," which catapulted him to the 2013 Country Male Vocal Artist of the Year in the Georgia Music Awards. The Country for the Cause concert will take place in the Emma Kelly Theater at the Averitt Center for the Arts on Friday, Oct. 2. The music starts at 9 p.m. For tickets to the free concert, visit or call the Averitt Center's box office. For more information about the event, contact the South Georgia Center for Cancer Care at (912) 764-3037.w
