Students returning to Statesboro — or arriving in town for the first time —might have one of the biggest tasks of any new school year covered thanks to Gray’s College Bookstore. As part of many puzzle-themed promotions throughout the year, Gray’s is offering one lucky student free books for life at the end of fall semester. Any student purchasing merchandise or renting or buying their books for the semester will be given a puzzle board along with a piece for the month of August. By stopping in at the store in each of the following months, pieces for September, October and November can be obtained. A returned rental or a book sold back to Gray’s will earn the final "December" piece to the puzzle. Students with complete puzzle boards can then enter into a drawing. One lucky winner from the entry pile will be chosen and will be able to get their
books from Gray’s, free of charge, for the rest of their time in Statesboro. Free books aren’t the only prizes to be won. Gray’s will be running other contests during the first week of classes. Customers can make a guess as to the number of puzzle pieces contained in a box and the person with the closest guess will win an iPad Mini. The winner will be announced Aug. 24. For those who want to save some money on textbooks by taking advantage of Gray’s rental program, another giveaway will also help to save on gas money. Any person renting a book from Gray’s this semester will be entered to win one of two road bicycles. Gray’s College Bookstore has been serving students of Georgia Southern University, East Georgia State College and other institutions via special orders since 2005. The store is located on Chandler Road, across from the Dining Commons on the GSU campus. The store will be open from 8 a.m.– 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.–7 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.– 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m.–5 p.m. on Sunday. Keel foreshadows GSU's 'next chapter' Turning the page from the expansion of Paulson Stadium to seat more than 21,000 people, the Eagles’ move into the Sun Belt Conference and a $13.5 million marketing deal with Coca-Cola, Georgia Southern University President Dr. Brooks Keel outlined what the university wants to write in its next chapter. “Twenty-first century learning is going to have a very different flavor to it,” he said during his State of the University Address. “One of the things we’re going to be doing is trying to find areas in which the state needs folks trained and educated.” Keel gave the informal speech, complete with slideshow, Wednesday morning during fall convocation, attended by more than 800 of the university’s 2,537 faculty and staff at the Performing Arts Center. “Writing Our Next Chapter” was the theme for the ceremony, which launches the academic year. Students are arriving in Statesboro now to begin classes Monday. Keel mentioned manufacturing engineering and digital media as two directions for future growth.
Manufacturing, he said, is coming back to the United States and to the Southeast in particular. “We have just now submitted a proposal to the Board of Regents to allow us to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing engineering,” Keel said. “To put things in perspective, there are only 25 programs in the country that have even been accredited. There’s nothing in the whole southeastern United States.” The nearest programs currently are in Virginia and Texas. Digital media, Keel said, “has broad implications. It goes well beyond computer science. It’s electrical engineering. … There’s writing and linguistics. When you start talking about video game developers, those folks have to have scripts. It’s all about art; it’s music; it’s theater.” He mentioned the recently built Pinewood Atlanta Studios, which have some of the largest sound stages in America. “Georgia is going to become the Hollywood of the 21st century,” Keel said.

Playing this weekend: Nickel Bag of Funk Vince Garrett Nickel Bag of Funk is a collective out of Savannah on the verge of taking their sound to the next level. Now in the process of interviewing booking agents and managers, the band is trying to expand their touring repertoire on a global scale. They’ve performed in Statesboro enough times to become a local staple. If there is one thing that is definite about the band, it is their energy in live performances. Leslie Adele owns the stage during her shows. She has a powerful voice alone, but she also takes a fearless approach, actively encouraging the audience to get involved. The jams pull you out of your seat and the lead makes sure you are having a good time.

The band is also working hard and working nonstop. In only eight months they have eclipsed their 260 shows from 2013. While on the road, they are writing their next album, which they plan to begin recording in September. Adele says the band’s plan is to support themselves full time with their music. Deseret News If you are on social media, you have probably seen friends, politicians, athletes or celebrities recently dump a bucket of ice water over their head. This chilly "challenge" they are doing is the Striking Out ALS: Ice Bucket Challenge, and it is taking over the social media world. The task is a campaign to raise money and awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS leads to muscle weakness, difficulty speaking, breathing and swallowing which eventually leads to death. There is no cure for the disease. The Ice Bucket Challenge started with Pete Frates, a former Boston College baseball player. Frates was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. Last month, Frates posted a video to Facebook inviting people to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Since then, the Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral. After people post their video of themselves using #IceBucketChallenge and #StrikeOutALS, they then nominate others to complete the challenge within 24 hours. If the nominees don’t accept the challenge, they are asked to donate to the ALS association. Whether people accept the challenge or not, the ALS association donations have skyrocketed. According to the ALS association, between July 29 and August 12 the association and its 38 chapters have received 4 million dollars in donations compared to the 1.12 million dollars last year at this time. The association is also pleased with how many people are now aware of the disease. "While the monetary donations are absolutely incredible, the visibility that this disease is getting as a result of the challenge is truly invaluable,” said

The drinks are affordable and delicious and the WiFi is free. The atmosphere makes you feel so happy that you can’t help but be productive. The Perks: In addition to coffee, pastries and sandwiches, The Daily Grind sells ceramics made by local artists, fresh bread and other specially made products. When you need to look away from your notes for a minute, there are plenty of items to browse. Located downtown on East Main Street, this is Statesboro’s newest coffee shop and it is cute as can be. With brick walls and locally painted artwork, this place is designed to help you tap into your creative well for all those essays you need to write. The owner and barista, David Hoyle, is friendly and conversational, and the coffee selection is very chic. You’ll find interesting, unique flavors here that you might miss at other venues. Cool Beanzalso shares the space with CAKE Bakery, which has a rotating menu of creative cupcakes with slap-you-down amazing icing. The Perks: Cool Beanz offers an intimate space, with two chairs per small circular table. This means that any crowd taking over the venue is going to have to be a small one,

keeping things quiet and peaceful for a long writing session. The Breaks: Between the coffee and the pastries, you can rack up quite a tab. Not because it’s more expensive than the other local shops, but because it’s incredibly addicting. Like, “shut up and take my money” addicting. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Ellianos “But wait,” you say. “Isn’t this a drivethru coffee place?” Yes, it is, but it also has several tables and chairs outside on a little patio. Right now, Ellianos is a great place to get a quick fix for cold, specialty drinks like ice coffees and smoothies. Once fall rolls around, the Ellianos patio will be a perfect place to crack open your books. Thanks to its outdoor isolation, there is very little around to distract you. The Perks: You can educate yourself, caffeinate yourself and enjoy your recommended dose of Vitamin D, all in the same location.

The Starbucks on Northside Drive has plenty of tables perfect for spreading out a textbook, and it also has comfy leather chairs and outdoor seating made for curling up with your English homework. The Perks: Starbucks has a great selection of syrups and flavoring to jazz up your coffee, so you can get crazy and creative with your order. Google the Starbucks Secret Menu for different drink ideas. As long as you bring in the recipe, the baristas should be happy to whip up a special concoction for you. Clear your calendars Part 2 of Alex Brown's breakdown of the Eagles' game schedule Last week, we previewed the first half of the season. Let’s pick up where we left off with the seventh game of the 2014 season for Georgia Southern football.
Oct. 11 vs. Idaho Paulson Stadium, 6 p.m.
The Eagles will host Idaho for homecoming weekend in Statesboro. The Vandals are coming off a miserable 2013 when they went 1-11. Something tells me they will be a few teams’ homecoming date this year. Leading the Vandals in his second year as head coach is Paul Petrino. Yes, he is Bobby’s brother. In fact, he has served as an assistant under Bobby at Louisville, Arkansas and for the train wreck that was the 2007 Atlanta Falcons season. He has also spent time at Utah State, Southern Mississippi and Illinois throughout his coaching career. This is his first head coaching gig. Idaho travels to Texas State the week before coming to Georgia Southern.

since Georgia State announced it would start a football program several years ago — and we finally get it. The Panthers have had a tough Alex Brown go of things in their first few years of football. They were 0-12 last year and only have a total of ten wins in the program’s four year history. Georgia Southern has won 10 or more games in 15 different seasons since 1985. And the Eagles would love nothing more than to make a statement with a big win. Southern gets a bye week before this matchup in the Georgia Dome while State goes to South Alabama.

Oct. 30 vs. Troy Paulson Stadium, 7:30 p.m.
After what will surely be a physical, highly emotional game against Georgia State, Troy comes to town just five days later for the second Thursday night ESPNU game at Paulson Stadium of the season. But the schedule isn’t doing any favors for Troy either. They have to travel to in-state rival South Alabama and then to Statesboro just a few days later. The Eagles have a little history with the Trojans. The two schools met on three occasions in the 1990s, the most recent meeting being in the 1995 playoffs. Troy is picked fourth in the preseason Sun Belt poll, so this will be a tough one.
Last time Georgia Southern traveled to Texas State, the Bobcats ended the Eagles’ 2005 season with a first round playoff exit. Southern led big at halftime, but Texas State’s defense stymied the triple option in the second half and came back to win 50-35. The Bobcats are coached by Dennis Franchione, who is in his second stint as head coach at Texas State which began in 2010. Between his stops in San Marcos, Franchione has been head coach at New Mexico, TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M. So I guess you could say he’s got some experience under his belt. Texas State travels to New Mexico the week before Georgia Southern comes to town.

Ken Niumatalolo is in his seventh season as head coach after serving as offensive coordinator under Paul Johnson during his tenure at Navy. On a personal note, if you have a chance to go to this game, do it. The gameday experience is just really cool and Annapolis is a beautiful city. Having said that, I think this is a winnable game for Georgia Southern. But Navy will have two weeks to prepare after playing Notre Dame on Nov. 1.
Nov. 29 vs. Louisiana-Monroe
Paulson Stadium, 6 p.m.
Georgia Southern will close its 2014 season on Thanksgiving weekend with a home game against Louisiana-Monroe. My least favorite thing about this season’s schedule is the fact that Southern only has three Saturday home games, and one of those happens to fall on Thanksgiving weekend. Monroe finished last season 6-6 but they won four of their last six games. The Warhawks will travel to New Mexico State the week before coming to Statesboro.

former dorm, to become the new home of the Communication Arts Department. A ribbon cutting is slated for Aug. 21. The Shooting Sports Center, now under construction, will accommodate both firearms competition and archery. Downtown, a $1.1 million U.S. Economic Development Administration grant is being used to expand the university’s City Campus to include a “business incubator,” with classrooms and equipment for creating new products. Just this week, the university announced that its Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Information Technology has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology. After offering engineering technology courses for many years, Georgia Southern received University System of Georgia approval and launched its bachelor’s degrees in engineering in 2011. “Our engineering program now has accreditation from ABET in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering,” Keel said. “This is a huge deal for Georgia Southern, for our students and for this community, especially South Georgia.”
Other new developments as Georgia Southern enters its 2014–15 academic year include a complete ban on tobacco use on campus, the first pay raise for most employees in six years and an approaching selfstudy to maintain the university’s regional accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and SchoolsCommission on Colleges. Patricia Humphrey, moderator of the GSU Faculty Senate, mentioned the raises, for which the university supplemented the state-funded amount, during her remarks. Other speakers included Kendria Lee from the Staff Council, which represents nonteaching employees, and Student Government Association President Azell Francis. “This was one of the better convocations I’ve been to,” said Dr. Richard Flynn, a professor in the literature and philosophy department. His spouse, Dr. Rebecca Kennerly, an assistant professor from the Communication Arts Department, called the presentation “informative and inspiring.” She added that she is excited about her department’s move into the new classroom, studio and performance spaces inside Sanford Hall.w

Before launching into the future, Keel highlighted recent news. The tiers adding 6,300 seats to Paulson Stadium were in use for spring graduation, attended by about 25,000 people. The new Football Operations Center at the stadium is set for a public ribboncutting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Keel’s assigning a $13.5 million total value to the 10-year, exclusive marketing agreement with Coca-Cola was new since the July 31 contract announcement, in which he said only that the agreement was worth “multiple millions” and that it would be 10 times the value of the previous deal with Coke. Wednesday, Keel’s PowerPoint slide noted that $6 million of the money will go to scholarships. It is the largest deal of its kind in the university’s history. The move up to the Sun Belt and the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision became official July 1. Two home games during the Eagles’ first season,
those against Appalachian State on Sept. 25 and Troy on Oct. 30, will be televised by ESPNU. “For a football program in its first year in the FBS to get two nationally televised football games, at home, is absolutely unheard of,” Keel said. He called the potential exposure to 75 million households “a game changer” for the value of the university’s brand and casually mentioned that the university is working on deals with a variety of other companies beyond Coca-Cola. “Athletics is the front porch of this university,” Keel said. “It gets people up on the front porch. They look in the picture window and see all of the other wonderful things that we’re doing at the university. When we have a 30-second spot on ESPN in front of 75 million TV sets, we’re going to be talking about the wonderful academic things that this university does.”

If much of Ed Verreaux's production design has a deliberately generic feel, Receiver's home office lives up to the revelations that will transpire there. An atrium-like library in a small bunker, it's built on "The Edge" and looks out on the cloud bank separating this world from Elsewhere, the place (ahem) that old folks go when they have reached the end of their careers. Here, Bridges' Receiver becomes the eponymous Giver, sitting in mind-meld sessions with his pupil and allowing the young man to experience all the sensations and knowledge denied other citizens. This process of eyeopening is easily the film's highlight, and Thwaites is appropriately awestruck by his first telepathic encounters with color, excitement and love. (In a much-hyped, flashback-ish cameo, Taylor Swift helps introduce Jonas to music.) Noyce is unsurprisingly capable in the short action sequence during which Jonas confronts his old schoolmates and makes his escape. But while Noyce is building suspense, cutting between
Jonas' flight and the peril of his loved ones back home (Streep is wasted as the heavy, enforcing conformity on those tempted to follow Jonas), the screenplay is preparing to let him down. With the exception of the psychic sessions between Jonas and the Giver, everything about this scenario is grounded in the physical world; order is maintained not by some ancient magic, but by technology, pharmaceuticals and old-fashioned authoritarianism. But (no spoilers here) the hurdle Jonas eventually faces is more akin to the enchanted object that a wizard-battling hero can simply smash to break the spell enslaving his kingdom. Wham-bam, no need for feel-good scenes of the peace he has brought to his fellow peasants. This easy out should go over especially badly with readers attached to the novel's much more ambiguous end — though to be fair, audiences by now are so used to this type of nonsense that it hardly even registers. Like Jonas' father — Alexander Skarsgard, who more than anyone in the cast finds a way to embody Sameness while being unmistakably human — we moviegoers tend to accept what we're told, never knowing the peaks of feeling and intelligence we should really be demanding.w
