However, no student may be denied enrollment for failing to provide his/her Social Security number. Any parent/legal guardian who objects to the incorporation of the Social Security number into the child’s school records may have the requirement waived by signing a statement objecting to the requirement. However, a Social Security Number will be required by the state for a student applying for the HOPE scholarship.

After school activities for kids Bulloch County Schools partners with the Statesboro-Bulloch Parks and Recreation Department, the Averitt Center for the Arts and the Bulloch County Boys & Girls Club to further the educational, recreational and fine arts opportunities for students through afterschool programs. Art After Hours is available for K-eighth-grade students at the Averitt Center. It allows children to explore their own creativity and develop artistic talents. The Boys & Girls Club provides afterschool care to many students in Bulloch County. Volunteers act as positive influences and role models a fun and engaging
program. SBCPRD's "Our Time" program offers a structured, supervised environment for K-fifth-grade students until 6 p.m. If a child needs extra attention with academics, then a parent can request assistance and the afterschool program will have a volunteer lend a hand. Volunteers use their experience in the Bulloch County School System to continue educating children. After retirement, many educators still have the drive to teach. Volunteers have been assets to the SBCPRD afterschool program for many years. They volunteer at all
schools at the request of parents of children in the program. SBCPRD relies on volunteers not only in the Afterschool Program, but in many other programs and events the department provides. “We are fortunate to live in a community where we utilize over 600 volunteers a year in AfterSchool, sports, and events,” says SBCPRD Director, Mike Rollins. “We could not provide many of the services we do without great volunteers.” Learn more about all of the after school programs under the "afterschool care section on the BCS website, www.bulloch.k12.ga.us/ backtoschool.

School system guidelines for dress Here’s what’s defined as appropriate, inappropriate for students Special to the Herald
Good grooming and personal appearance are essential elements to the teaching and learning process. Students’ dress and personal appearance are expected to not interfere with the health and safety of all people in the school and not be disruptive or interfere with the legitimate interest and welfare of the students. The principal or designated person(s) at each school have the authority to determine inappropriate dress. Any student violating the dress code must modify the infraction per the administrator’s request. Refusal to obey a request to modify a dress code infraction is treated as insubordination/ refusal to obey an official as described in the Violations of Student Code of Conduct section of this Handbook. At the school official’s discretion, this act will be a Class I, II, or III offense. While at

Students wearing pants/slacks/skirts or shorts at an unacceptable level shall move the clothing to an acceptable level and secure it with their own personal belt, or with means supplied by the administration of the school. An appropriate length for shorts/skirts is a mid-thigh length or finger-

Biker pants, sagging pants, leggings, uncovered spandex, strapless attire, tank tops, half shirts, bare midriff tops, halters, see-through clothing, exposed underwear, unbuttoned shirts revealing bare chests, hanging chains (including those attached to clothing), or coats/jackets that go below the waist (including dusters/trench or other similar styles) are not to be worn.
9. Tattoos that are disruptive to the learning environment must be covered. Facial piercings and tooth grills are potential safety hazards and can be unduly disruptive to the learning environment and should not be worn at school.
10. Changing of clothes on school property is to be restricted to restrooms, dressing rooms, and other appropriate assigned places and is not to occur in classrooms or school buses.

Board of Education meeting schedule All meetings start at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise announced. Regular session and work session meetings will be held at the Central Office’s board room in the William James Complex at 150 Williams Road, unless otherwise announced. Public participation is welcome at all regular session meetings. Work Session meetings are tentatively scheduled and will be cancelled if not needed. Any called or special session meetings will be advertised to the public in advance. Meeting dates, times and places are subject to change with advance notice.
Meeting dates are set at the first regular session meeting in January of each year. The 2017 dates will be approved and posted at that time. Staying safe as a school bus rider A message from the Bulloch County Schools Transportation Dept. Special to the Herald
4. Never walk to another bus stop.
Here are a few basic expectations to ensure the safety of your child while riding the bus for this school term. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in helping us to make this a safe year.
5. Never allow your parents to drive you to another bus stop. 6. If you drop something, leave it and move to a point out of the Danger Zone. Do not pick it up without getting instructions from the bus driver.
1. Be at your bus stop 5 minutes before your scheduled stop. Wait 15 feet from the edge of the road and do not cross the road until you get the signal from the driver.
7. Always stay away from the front and rear bus tires. 8. Before crossing the road, make eye contact with the driver and get the “thumbs up” signal which indicates it is safe to cross.
2. Get on the bus, go directly to your assigned seat and stay seated. 3. Keep your hands and book bags in your lap.
9. When unloading at school: • Walk (don’t run) straight towards the school. • Stay away from the bus so your driver can see you. • Keep walking until you get out of the Danger Zone (15 feet away from the bus).
4. No radios or tape/CD/ DVD players (without headphones), toys, balloons, balls, bats, sharp objects or live animals are permitted on the bus. 5. No eating, drinking or chewing gum, (this could result in choking). 6. No loud talking. Keep your voices low so the driver can listen for other students or emergency vehicles. 7. No profane language. Respect the driver and other students.
8. Fighting is not allowed. 9. Get off bus and go straight to your house. 10. Clothing should not have a drawstring that could get caught in the handrail. All clothing should be worn so the child can safely load/ unload the bus.
11. Written permission from parent, signed by the principal, is required for a child to ride a bus to which he/she is not assigned. The note should show the child’s name, destination address and date. Stay safe on the bus
For the third consecutive year, the state of Georgia leads the nation in bus fatalities. Ninety percent (90 percent ) of these occur while loading or unloading a school bus. Following these 10 rules could save your life! 1. Arrive at the bus stop
five minutes before the bus is scheduled to come. Do not try to get on the bus as it starts to move. 2. Have all items in your book bag before you leave home so you do not drop anything. 3. Never chase after a bus - no matter what.
10. When loading at school: • Walk straight towards to bus door and be sure your driver can see you. • Stay away from the front and rear bus tires and board the bus quickly. • Never chase after a moving bus. Once the bus starts moving, you should stop moving.
Schools require immunizations Special to the Herald No child can attend public school without a Certificate of Immunization (form 3231) provided by the Department of Human Resources (DHR), the Bulloch County Health Department or a licensed physician. Georgia law allows for two types of exemption from this code: Medical or religious. The school principal or school system superintendent may grant a 30 calendar day waiver of the immunization certificate for either of these exemptions provided documentation is provided by a physician or the Health Department that either the immunizations are required documentation are in process. If the child withdraws from school and later reenrolls, the parent/guardian will not be granted another 30-day waiver. A certificate for a child who is in the process of receiving all required vaccines must have a date of expiration that relates to the date the next required

immunization is due or the date on which a medical exemption must be reviewed. A new certificate must then be obtained and submitted to the school or facility within 30 days after expiration date. Children whose parents fail to renew said certificates within the time allotted shall not be permitted to continue in attendance. A medical exemption must be recorded on the Certificate of Immunization (form 3231) by the licensed physician. This exemption requires an annual recertification by the physician. A religious exemption must have a written, notarized affidavit from the parent/legal guardian which certifies that the immunization requirement conflicts with the religious beliefs. This documentation is only required of the parent one time. The school system does not offer notary services to the public. Immunization may be required by the system should a disease be in an epidemic stage in the school/system. During an epidemic or a threatened
epidemic of any disease preventable by an immunization required by the Georgia Department of Human Resources, children who have not been immunized may be excluded from the school until (1) they are immunized against the disease unless they present valid evidence of prior disease, or (2) the epidemic or threat no longer constitutes a significant health danger. Out of state students must meet all requirements for Georgia Immunization and the documentation must be provided on the Georgia Certificate of Immunization Form. All children born on or after January 1, 2002, or new entrants into a Georgia school system are required to have at least one dose of Te t a n u s - D i p h t h e r i a Pertussis (Tdap) and one dose of Meningococcal Conjugate (MCV4) vaccine. Before starting the school year, all incoming seventh-grade students will need proof of a whooping cough booster shot and a meningococcal shot unless the child has an exemption.

The School Nutrition staff at each school invites and encourages your child’s participation in the breakfast, lunch, and snack programs. Nutritious meals and snacks are planned, prepared and served daily. Each week’s meals meet the dietary guidelines for students in the specified grade levels.
Meal Costs Breakfast is free for all students for the 2016-2017 school year. Lunch is $1.90 in elementary schools and $2.15 in middle/high schools. The reduced cost of lunch is $0.40. Parents are encouraged to visit their child’s school at mealtime with prior reservations. Meal costs for visitors are: Breakfast - $2.25 and Lunch - $4.00. Please place meal money in a sealed envelope with your child’s first and last name, homeroom teacher and payment amount on the outside of the envelope. If paying by check, include student's first and last name on the check. Paying for meals in advance using the online My School Bucks system is encouraged. If paying manually, please place payment in a sealed envelope with your child’s first and last name, homeroom teacher,
and payment amount on the outside of the envelope. Include the student’s first and last name on the check. If the school nutrition program receives two checks marked insufficient funds on a student/family account, the program will no longer accept checks as the method of payment for school meals for that student/family for the current school year. Pay for school meals online with “My School Bucks.” This site is easy to use, convenient, private and secure. Simply go to the www. myschoolbucks.com website to enroll and to start using the site to deposit funds into your student’s meal account. Once your account is established, you can check balances or fund the account anytime from your home computer, phone or fax. Your child’s information is safe. Charging Meals Payment is due at meal time. There is a “No Charge” policy for High Schools. Elementary and Middle school students
without cash or on account will be allowed to accumulate charges for only five (5) days. At that point the account must be paid before allowing additional charges. Negative balance letters are sent home weekly with each student.
Free and reduced-price meals Meal applications are distributed to all students the first week of school. They are also available in the school nutrition manager’s office. All students applying for benefits must complete a new application each year. A percentage of these approved applications will be verified for correct information in November. Parents are responsible for providing this information for a student to continue receiving meal benefits. • New students moving into the school system must complete an application immediately. Meal status does not transfer across county and state lines. • Prior year students who received benefits last year in Bulloch County are eligible to continue these benefits until Sept. 13, or until a new application is processed, whichever comes first. Sales tax holiday

Parents are responsible for payment of all meals during this approval period. You will be notified by mail if the application is approved or denied. Instructions for completing the form are attached to the application. Incomplete applications cannot be processed and will be returned.
