Dear Reader, Welcome to the new edition of the Official Bulloch County Guide! Our staff has worked hard over several months to provide you with this reference guide that we hope you’ll keep in a handy place for months to come. We appreciate the support of all who have contributed to this project including our local advertisers who appreciate your business most. Whether you are a newcomer or neighbor, the longer you live here the more you’ll like it. I guess you could say it really “grows” on you. I moved here in 2002 with my wife and three sons and Bulloch certainly has grown on all of us. Located a short drive from the Atlantic Ocean, Bulloch County is known for a great climate, championship football teams, award-winning barbeque and even a few musical legends. Bulloch County is a growing, progressive community combining small town charm, rich agricultural heritage with a college town to produce a great place to live, work, play and raise a family. People living here enjoy clean air and water, job and great educational opportunities with excellent schools, churches, restaurants, recreational and cultural activities. Our state-of-the art 911 Center, expanded fire and law enforcement facilities and low crime rate are evidence of the area’s commitment to public safety. Every year, Bulloch County welcomes new residents and new businesses. Our people make up the heart of the community and really set it apart from other South Georgia communities. Many residents who leave here eventually return to stay. Statesboro and all of Bulloch County is a caring and giving community. I urge you to join your neighbors to become involved in ways that fit your lifestyle: play sports, participate in the arts, or volunteer for a nonprofit agency. a brief history

Let me tell you about Statesboro.
It is not Charleston, for sure — not even Savannah. Some places make you feel ashamed if you don’t have a pedigree. They require you to trace your family back five generations to qualify for the Newcomers’ Club. Thank goodness Statesboro is not that kind of place. Maybe this relaxed attitude springs from the origins of the town. After all, Statesboro was a gift. Bulloch County was formed in 1796. Five years later, it dawned on someone that to be a proper county, Bulloch needed a seat of government. The person who made this observation happened to live in Augusta, but he owned thousands of acres in the middle of the county. George Siebald gave almost 200 acres for the new town in 1801. Two years later, on Dec. 19, 1803, Gov. John Milledge signed into law the legislative act creating Statesborough. They built Statesboro, but nobody came, except when Superior Court opened for session twice a year. Bulloch County begins to grow. Throughout the late 1800s, Bulloch County grew by leaps and bounds. Families lived close to the land and reaped harvests of cotton, corn and vegetables. Livestock flourished. A problem for farmers, however, was their distance from the markets in Savannah and Augusta. By 1880, there were more than 8,000 people in Bulloch County. The population of Statesboro was 25 — about three families. Then, a freshly minted lawyer from Bryan County moved to town, hoping to practice law. He recently had graduated from Mercer College and passed the Georgia bar exam. His name was James Alonzo (Lonnie) Brannen. He noticed there were three houses, but counted only a dozen people. He also noticed something else: dozens of outsiders came to town when court was in session. But they didn’t buy anything. Neither did they sell anything. They conducted their business elsewhere. Lonnie Brannen put his head together with a few other young people — mostly newcomers. You have seen their names all around town: Blitch, Olliff, Lester, Hall, Preetorius and others. They developed a plan to make a real city out of Statesboro. The first step was a big one: hook up Statesboro with the mighty Central of Georgia Railroad. By 1889, glistening lines of steel linked Statesboro to Central’s Dover Station. Now, progress was on track, and the dream of
Statesboro as a hub city began to come true. Another vision shared by the newcomers led to the establishment of what is now Georgia Southern University. Neighboring towns also wanted the First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. But the people of Statesboro put together a negotiating team that would not take “no” for an answer. Doctors, lawyers, the county commission, and City Council traveled with that determined committee of 100 in December 1906. They kept bidding until no one top could theirs — $125,000, including 300 acres and free utilities for 10 years. When the jubilant volunteers returned on the evening of Dec. 6, 2006, the entire town gathered at the train station to celebrate. That was the first Day for Southern. Who is Statesboro? Statesboro is Florence Williams whom Lonnie Brannen appoints as publisher and editor of the city’s first newspaper in 1889 — the Statesboro Eagle. Miss Williams, perhaps, was the first female publisher in Georgia. Statesboro is Professor William James — standing 6-1/2 feet tall, dressed in a business suit — as he mobilizes the white and black communities to build a school for children who never before had an opportunity to learn. Statesboro is Raif Simmons, who cannot write his name but who flawlessly calculates columns of numbers. He proves to farmers they can get a much better deal in the Statesboro market than in Savannah. For every bale of Sea Island Cotton sold in Savannah, Mr. Simmons and other brokers sell 10. Between 1903 and 1908, Statesboro becomes the world’s leading market in Sea Island Cotton (hence, the name of the bank). The spirit of innovation lives on, and we see it in the city’s highly successful regional industrial park with several national industries. The new hospital is a regional hospital. The old A&M School is a regional university, now with more than 20,000 students, a powerhouse in both academics and athletics. And in many ways, the dream of William James lives on in the public school system. Ogeechee Technical College provides a wide range of technical courses and degrees, fulfilling the aspirations of Professor James. In short, Statesboro has become what its first mayor had hoped: a true hub of commercial, industrial, educational and cultural activity in southern Georgia.

The city of Statesboro is a progressive community providing an exceptional quality of life to its residents and offering Southern charm and hospitality to its visitors. Statesboro has a growing economy facilitated by a strong industrial base, a growing university and a regional medical center. This regional economic hub is 15 miles from I-16 and offers many educational and vocational opportunities that provide a competitive advantage for a strong workforce.
EDUCATION: Bulloch County has three institutions of higher learning: Georgia Southern University, East Georgia State College and Ogeechee Technical College. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools, GSU offers 125 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Ogeechee Tech offers 112 programs of study including 33 diploma programs and 60 certificate programs, as well as 19 associate degrees. East Georgia State College, based in Swainsboro, has a Statesboro campus on U.S. 301 South. East Georgia offers 21 programs of study and online degrees in general studies, psychology and sociology along with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Bulloch County has a public Pre-K–12th grade public school system that serves more than 10,500 students. There are also three private schools, one state charter school and a homeschool association that serve approximately 1,000 students. HEALTH CARE: As the home of East Georgia Regional Medical Center, Statesboro is a regional healthcare leader. With more than 750 employees and 75 physicians representing a wide range of specialties, EGRMC is a JCAHO-accredited 150-bed hospital. East Georgia offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including same-day surgery and ambulatory care, a pain center, a cardiac catheterization lab and state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures including MRI and CT. RECREATION: Recreational opportunities are plentiful. The Willie McTell Trail is a linear park that provides a pedestrian walk and bicycle path from the GSU campus to downtown Statesboro. The first phase of the S&S Greenway, connecting Gentilly Road to Pretoria Rushing Road, was completed in spring 2012. It is a 2.7-mile trail for bicycles and pedestrians. The entire greenway will connect Statesboro and Brooklet when it is finished. Also located in Statesboro is a family-fun water park and aquatics center, Splash in the Boro. Nineteen hotels, motels and bed & breakfast inns with 816 rooms are in
the greater Statesboro area. CULTURE: Statesboro’s residents and visitors alike enjoy cultural and performing arts in the Averitt Center for the Arts on East Main Street. The restoration of the Old Bank of Statesboro, originally built in 1911, as a venue for community arts, activities and performances has played a key role in the revitalization of downtown. The Averitt Center, home of the Emma Kelly Theater, is operated by the Statesboro Arts Council and is a vibrant centerpiece in the city’s historic downtown, with a smaller black box theater space on West Main Street.Two state-of-the arts performing venues, the Performing Arts Center and the Center for Art & Theatre, are located on the Georgia Southern University campus. TRANSPORTATION: Statesboro is served by Ogeechee Railway Company and numerous common freight carriers. The city and Bulloch County jointly own the Statesboro Municipal Airport, just outside the city limits on U.S. 301 North. Statesboro is 45 minutes from Savannah International Airport, which is served by seven major airlines. Statesboro is about 50 miles from the Savannah ports, while Bulloch County is roughly equidistant from the ports of Charleston, South Carolina, Beaufort, South Carolina, Brunswick, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida, giving several options on ports and sailing frequency. MEDIA: Seven local radio stations serve Statesboro: WVGS-FM (91.9), WHKN-FM (94.9), WPMX-FM (102.9), WZBX-FM (106.5), WMCD-FM (107.3), WPTB-AM (850) and WWNS-AM (1240), and one daily newspaper, the Statesboro Herald. Four television stations in Savannah also regularly cover Statesboro: WSAV (NBC), WTOC (CBS), WJCL (ABC) and WTGS (Fox). Several Savannah-area radio stations also can be heard in Statesboro. GOVERNMENT: The city operates under the council-manager form of government. The mayor is elected at large while the five council members are elected by district. All elections are nonpartisan and the terms are for four years, with half of the members elected every two years. The City Council appoints the city manager to head the administrative functions of city government. Services provided by the city are general government, judicial, public safety and public works.

Bulloch County tax information Tax Commissioner James Deal, an elected official, is responsible for the collection of county (unincorporated areas) property taxes. The tax office, located in the Bulloch County Annex building at 113 N. Main St., also sells vehicle tags and mobile home tags. Bulloch County’s tax rate is one of the lowest in the state of Georgia. Newcomers have 30 days to register their vehicles with the tag office. Bulloch County uses a staggered tag renewal schedule. Renewals are due on the vehicle owner’s birthday or within 30 days before that date. The standard tag fee is $20, however specialty tags (vanity, veteran, university, wildlife, etc.) are available for an extra fee. Under a new law, vehicles sold in Georgia since March 1, 2013, no longer will be subject to annual ad valorem tax, or so-called “birthday tax.” But newcomers to the state must pay 50 percent of the newly instituted Title Ad Valorem Tax, or TAVT, within 30 days of moving to Georgia, and the other half within the next 12 months. This applies even if the new Georgia resident paid sales tax in the previous state.The TAVT is 6.5 percent of the estimated value of the vehicle. Ad valorem tax, more commonly known as property tax, is assessed on homes and land and is a large source of revenue for governments in Georgia. The basis for ad valorem taxation is the fair market value of the property, which is established Jan. 1 of each year. The tax is levied on the assessed value of the property which, by law, is established at 40 percent of the fair market value. The amount of tax is determined by the tax rate (mill rate) levied by various entities (one mill is equal to $1 for each $1,000 of assessed value or .001). Property taxes are generally mailed in November and due 60 days later. The current county millage rate is 20.59 mills, which equates to approximately $1,080 in property taxes on a $100,000 home without the homestead exemption. In addition, the county also assesses an additional fire district tax on homes located outside Statesboro’s city limits, but within 5 miles of a fire station. Because the city fire department provides fire protection and services to these home, owners pay slightly higher taxes but receive lower home owner insurance rates. Other taxes currently paid by residents include a sales tax and voter-approved Special Purpose Local 12 • Bulloch County Guide 2017
Option Sales Taxes, or SPLOSTs, which are funding capital improvement projects and new school construction. According to the Tax Assessor’s website, the maintenance and operation of Bulloch County public schools uses 46 percent of the tax budget. Fifty-one percent of the budget is used for other Bulloch County public services such as the 911 Call Center, Bulloch County EMS Services, rural fire department services, the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Department and Jail, the Correctional Institute and the Bulloch County court system. The Bulloch County Tax Assessor’s Office maintains a searchable website including sales, assessed values, maps and other tax information, at bullochtaxassessors.org.
What services do property taxes support? The Bulloch County 911 Center fields an average of 5,700 calls per month, about half of which need emergency services assistance. For a charge, Bulloch County also answers and dispatches emergency calls for Candler and Evans counties. Bulloch County EMS operates eight ambulances and responds to an average of 500 calls per month, transporting an average of 445 of those calls. The Bulloch County Fire Department operates 13 volunteer stations, manned by 150 trained volunteer firefighters using 21 engines. The department answers an average of 60 calls per month. The Bulloch County Sheriff ’s Office patrols more than 1,200 miles of road, responds to nearly 500 calls per month and provides safety and security for the Bulloch County Court System. The jail has a 400-inmate capacity. The Bulloch County Correctional Institute has the capacity to hold 170 inmates. The institute provides inmates for 47 county work details and provides maintenance for all county vehicles and equipment. The Bulloch County Court System maintains thousands of paper files and records, operates all county civil and criminal court cases and provides marriage licenses, gun permits, birth certificates and more. The Bulloch County Animal Shelter is a lastchance shelter for dogs and cats in need of a home. The shelter is located just off U.S. Highway 301 North, at 81 Mill Creek Road, just outside the Statesboro city limits. New adoptable pets arrive daily.

State troopers have statewide jurisdiction, except on military installations. They primarily patrol the interstate and provide SWAT responses to rural areas. Troopers focus on traffic violations such as DUIs and erratic driving and speeding, and they investigate traffic accidents on county roads. Remember, the state of Georgia has a “super-speeder” fine. Drivers traveling 85 mph or more on divided highways or 75 mph or more on two-lane roads will be subject to an extra $200 fine above the regular citation amount. Drivers who don’t pay within 90 days risk license suspension. Monies raised from the super-speeder fines assist funding Georgia’s network of trauma care hospitals.

in bulloch county Schools in Bulloch County Bulloch County Schools (BCS) is the county’s secondlargest employer with more than 1,300 employees, and its student population is just nearly 10,500. The school district includes 15 schools and one alternative school, the Transitions Learning Center, all of which are accredited by AdvancEd, formerly the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
STRATEGIC PLANNING
BCS is a system that seeks strong input from the community for strategic planning through its district advisory councils, school councils, parent teacher organizations, Board of Education committees, and its annual Speak Up for Education events.This valuable input helps the school system produce a working strategic plan from which its central office departments and schools can create plans for improvement.You can see the district’s current strategic plan at www.bullochschools.org. FACILITIES The district works to provide its faculty with modern classrooms and technology. More than $138 million has been invested in construction and renovation of new and existing schools and facilities in past 10 years including four new schools (Statesboro High, Julia P. Bryant Elementary, Sallie Zetterower Elementary, and Mattie Lively Elementary).The district uses a 35-member district facilities committee, comprised of one faculty and one community representative from each school.The group works to identify and prioritize facilities needs throughout the district and develop a state-approved five-year master plan for facilities. Though the student population is now nearly 10,500, many of the schools are still centered around small, closeknit communities such as Stilson, Brooklet, Nevils and Portal.The Board of Education has invested in keeping community schools. AdvancEd commended the school system on its proactive fiscal planning and actions that have consistently placed the system on a firm financial foundation. The Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts also selected the Bulloch County Board of Education (BOE) multiple times for its Award of Distinction for Excellent Financial Reporting.The district’s budget and audits are available on its website. COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS College and career readiness is a major component of BCS’s strategic plan. Key initiatives are in place to prepare students across all grade levels (K-12) for college and careers. BCS focuses on student mastery of academic standards, student proficiency, depth of knowledge, skills development, career awareness, career pathways, attendance, and behavior. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Bulloch County is one of two Georgia counties selected by the state to work with Jobs for the Future and the Harvard Graduate School of Education to build a model workforce development system. Bulloch County Schools and its superintendent are leading this initiative.The focus is to develop a work plan to develop strong career pathways for grades 9 – 14 that are supported by regional stakeholders and aligned with local and area labor-market needs.The school system currently provides 17 different career pathways. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS BCS partners with other entities such as the StatesboroBulloch Parks and Recreation Department, the Averitt Center for the Arts, the Bulloch County Boys & Girls Club, the Bulloch County Extension Service (4H), and Georgia Southern University, to further the educational, recreational and fine arts opportunities for our students. BCS partners with the SBP&RD to build facilities that serve not only the athletic needs of schools but the community as well. The SBP&RD, the Averitt Center and the Boys & Girls Club all offer excellent afterschool programs for students. INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY BCS has been recognized as one of the top mid-sized school districts in the nation eighth in the nation among mid-sized districts for its use of technology. This is a result of not only implementing the technology but effectively training faculty and students on how best to utilize the latest instructional technology tools.The district uses Google Apps for Education for faculty, staff and student communication and collaboration. Public School Registration Public school registration, change of address for current students and bus route information is handled at each school, Monday through Friday during school hours. Parents or guardians registering a new student must establish their identity by producing a valid driver’s license or a picture ID. Legal guardianship is established by providing one of the documents listed below: • Birth Certificate – must show name of parent(s) • Custody Documents • Power-of-Attorney documents (military or civilian) • Letter of Placement from DFACS Parents and guardians should bring two proofs of residence such as any two of the following: • Copy of receipt for monthly rental/ mortgage payment • Copy of rental/mortgage agreement • Copy of water, telephone or cable bill • Copy of property tax bill • Copy of homeowners insurance policy/ receipt • Income tax form with your address If a family (and child) lives with a person who rents or owns the home, an affidavit or notarized statement from renter or owner, to the effect that the family (and child) lives with them, is required. U.S. News & World Report named Georgia Southern as one of America’s Best Colleges in 2013. Military Advanced Education and G.I. Jobs have designated Georgia Southern a “military-friendly” school, and Military Times magazine named the College of Business Administration as one of the Best Business Schools for Veterans. In addition to on-campus instruction, the university also offers online courses and degree programs for those whose career and family responsibilities make it difficult to travel to campus. Several times, Georgia Southern has been named by U.S. News & World Report as a Best Online Education Program, in addition to Best Online MBA Program. Georgia Southern is home to more than 20,500 students and has an annual economic impact of more than $846 million on Bulloch County and the surrounding areas. Thanks to a grant of nearly $1.1 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the university and the city of Statesboro are expanding the university’s City Campus into two buildings to help entrepreneurs design, build and release their products into the marketplace while creating new jobs. In 2012, the university furthered its educational and economic development efforts with the creation of the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Information Technology. Pairing new engineering degree programs with already existing information technology curriculum means graduates of the college will be work-ready with valuable skills and expertise. Georgia Southern’s dedication to research has a positive impact on those who live and work in southeast Georgia. As part of the Rural Health Research Institute, researchers are looking for ways to address the physical
and mental health needs of those in areas traditionally underserved by the medical community. The institute was awarded a $5.1 million grant by the National Institutes of Health designating the RHRI as a Center of Excellence for the Elimination of Rural Health Disparities. While its core mission is to provide education through its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs, Georgia Southern serves as a place of lifelong learning for residents of Bulloch County and beyond. Tens of thousands of visitors travel to Statesboro each year to see the bald eagles, birds of prey, reptiles and amphibians at the Center for Wildlife Education and Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center. The Georgia Southern Museum features exhibits that change throughout the year to reflect the diverse interests of its visitors. An exhibit commemorating the 100th anniversiary of the United States’ involvement in the First World War and its impact in Georgia, called “The World’s War is Georgia’s War, 1917-1919,” is currently on display. Additionally, the university’s planetarium provides spectacular glimpses into the universe during various free events held throughout the year. The university also reaches out to the community through the Georgia Southern Botanic Gardens, which serve not only as an educational site for field trips and community groups, but also as a striking backdrop for special events. The garden is home to the Oak Grove School, a unique, turn-of-the-century one-room schoolhouse that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The university’s Performing Arts Center brings internationally renowned talent to Statesboro, and each season offers a variety of music, theater and dance. The university provides summer camps for children of all ages and interests. Whether it is wildlife, cheerleading, robotics, art or music, these summer camps provide an enriching experience to a child’s summer. The Division of Continuing Education offers a number of classes and seminars each year on a variety of topics. Some of these courses are for career development, while others are offered for the challenge and fulfillment of learning new skills. After winning six national championships in the Football Championship Subdivision, Georgia Southern began competition in the Sun Belt Conference in the 2014-15 season as it moved to the Football Bowl Subdivision. While all other sports were already competing at the highest level that the NCAA has to offer, former GSU football teams competed at the I-AA/FCS level — just a tick down from the titans of the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, etc. Despite being the new kids on the block and still competing with a roster full of players recruited to play at the FCS level, the Eagles made no excuses and got right to work in continuing with their most cherished tradition — winning. Georgia Southern made NCAA history in becoming the first team to go undefeated in conference play in its first year as an FBS program. Of all other teams to make the leap, only one other program had even managed to tie for a conference championship in its first season. With a win over Louisiana-Monroe in the season finale in November of 2014, the Eagles claimed the outright Sun Belt championship. Eagle football games are charged with excitement, and game day at Georgia Southern is an event embraced by not only Statesboro and Bulloch County, but a large portion of southeast Georgia. Georgia Southern flags and Eagle-head logos dot the landscape as the community and fans show their support. Tailgating begins hours before kickoff, and Allen E. OGEECHEE
technical college The Georgia General Assembly approved the establishment of Ogeechee Technical Institute as a public, two-year technical institute under the supervision of the Department of Technical and Adult Education in 1986. Groundbreaking for the campus occurred two years later, and during the following year, Ogeechee Tech began offering its first credit program, practical nursing, with 25 students enrolled. Ogeechee Tech assumed the responsibility for offering adult literacy programs and administering the General Educational Development examination in 1989. Faculty and staff moved into the new 75,000-square-foot, $6 million state-of-the-art facility in fall of 1990, and additional program offerings began in the spring quarter of 1991. Ogeechee Tech graduated its first class of nine practical nursing students in December 1990. The opening of Ogeechee Tech coincided with the explosive growth of Georgia Southern University and the Statesboro area. In addition, the establishment of the Georgia Lottery-funded Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally, or HOPE, financial aid program in 1993 was a contributing factor in the unprecedented growth of Ogeechee Tech. In 1998, DTAE renamed the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction in memory and honor of the 1996 Commissioner’s Award of Excellence winner, Thomas Rick Perkins, from Carroll Technical Institute. The award recognizes instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through instructional excellence, outstanding leadership qualities and dedication to DTAE’s mission. In 1999, John Groover represented Ogeechee Tech as the winner of the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction for the state of Georgia. Ogeechee Tech experienced a $5.5 million expansion by adding three buildings — a Health Sciences Building, a Child Enrichment Center and a Horticulture Building in 1999. During this time, Ogeechee Tech also increased its services through the opening of the Screven County Learning Center in Sylvania, Georgia. Ogeechee Tech offered its first Associate of Applied Technology degree program in industrial manufacturing technology in the winter quarter of 2000, with eight students enrolled, and in the following academic year offered AAT degrees in accounting, computer 26 • Bulloch County Guide 2017
information systems, early childhood care and education, funeral service education, health information technology, healthcare management technology, marketing management, opticianry and secretarial science. House Bill 1187, known as the A+ Education Reform Act, enacted in 2000, changed the names of technical institutes in Georgia to technical colleges. On July 6 of that year, Ogeechee Tech officially became Ogeechee Technical College. OTC awarded its first

OGEECHEE technical college AAT degree in December 2000 in early childhood care and education. During summer 2002, Ogeechee Tech opened the Evans County Learning Center. Student growth continued over the years at OTC largely because of the addition of new programs, many of which are unique to the Department of Technical and Adult Education, the state and the region. These distinctive programs included certificates, diplomas and degrees in technical areas such as funeral service education, forensic science technology and opticianry. With the opening of the Occupational Studies Building in fall 2003, a wider variety of programs, such as agribusiness, wildlife and plantation management, Geographical Information Systems Technology, veterinary technology, culinary arts and hotel, restaurant and tourism management, enabled the college to further expand its offerings. In 2004, OTC paid tribute to the late Sen. Joseph E. Kennedy for his role in the establishment of Ogeechee Tech by dedicating the main building on campus as the Joseph E. Kennedy Building. During the summer of 2007, Ogeechee Tech moved the adult education program to the Bulloch County Workforce Development Center in downtown Statesboro. On May 13, 2008, Gov. Sonny Perdue signed legislation that officially changed the name of the Department of Technical and Adult Education. Effective July 1, 2008, the system became known as the Technical College System of Georgia. Perdue also served as the keynote speaker for the 2008 Spring Commencement at OTC. Shortly thereafter, Laura “Molly” Bickerton, a student in the college’s radiologic technology program, was selected as Georgia’s technical college Student of the Year in the 37th annual Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership competition. In July 2008, OTC was awarded a Regional Law Enforcement Academy in Claxton, Georgia. The project, which involved five other technical colleges, allowed new law enforcement officers to receive their basic law enforcement training at a state technical college and obtain college credit at the same time. Nearby, in Hagan, Georgia, OTC began construction of the Evans Technical Education Complex. The new complex included the Logistics and Public Safety Building, the Commercial Trucking Preventive Maintenance facility, a driving track for the commercial trucking program and an emergency vehicle operators
track for the Regional Law Enforcement Academy. Toward the end of 2008, amid a downturn in the economy, a reduction in state funds and rising gas prices, OTC joined other technical colleges in the state to institute a four-day work week. The move reduced the cost of utilities without reducing any services to students. Another big change came at the beginning of 2009 when an Emergency Mass Notification System for faculty, staff and students was implemented. The new OTC-Alert system provided a way to send emergency warnings via cellphone and email messages. Despite a challenging economy, good things continued to happen at Ogeechee Tech. Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel was the keynote speaker at the 2009 commencement exercises and, in an effort to offer better services to the students, Ogeechee Tech moved the adult education program to a new location adjacent to the main campus. In fall 2010, Perdue returned to campus to speak at a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Health Science Building-North. In 2011, amid changes to the HOPE Scholarship, transitioning from quarters to semesters, moving to a tobacco-free campus and challenging economic times, Ogeechee Tech once again celebrated having the Technical College System of Georgia’s star student, as local GOAL winner Alvie Coes III, a funeral service education student, was named the state GOAL winner. Another accolade was announced when OTC was named the 2011 Technical College of the Year for the State of Georgia. The award is determined by meeting benchmarks in a variety of critical areas, and Ogeechee Tech earned the top spot over all the other colleges in the state system. A continuing effort to provide new and needed programs of study keeps Ogeechee Tech in the forefront of meeting the educational demands of citizens in this part of Georgia. Enrollment growth of 10.3 percent from 2010 to 2011 and 4,470 students attending classes have proved repeatedly that the demand for Ogeechee Tech’s services is stronger than ever. With credit programs, continuing education, GED and literacy programs and various other services, the college’s commitment to meet the needs of the region continues. In response to enrollment growth and program needs, the college began classes in the new state-of-the-art Health Science-North Building in January 2013.

EAST GEORGIA state college East Georgia State College is an access institution of the University System of Georgia and serves approximately 3,000 students on its three campuses in Swainsboro, Statesboro and Augusta. EGSC has the lowest tuition of any college or university in the University System, and with a 32-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio, students thrive in a supportive academic environment. TORMENTA football club For all the athletic successes of Georgia Southern and area high schools, Statesboro has also seen instant results from a new team that is a step closer to the professional ranks. The summer of 2016 saw the inaugural season for South Georgia Tormenta FC in the Premier Development League. The club, which plays from May through July — with a home field at Georgia Southern and division rivals spread throughout the southeast — is comprised mostly of collegiate standouts who are aiming to play elite level competition in the offseason before returning to their respective schools in the fall. In its first season, Tormenta had a solid showing, finishing 6-5-3 to place fifth in its division. More importantly, the team saw immense support from its fans and the Statesboro community in general. In seven home games, Tormenta averaged nearly 2,000 fans — more than three times the league average. With all of those things considered, South Georgia was recognized by the PDL as the league’s best new franchise last winter. That kind of prestige has quickly helped the team to grow. As an unknown expansion team last season, Tormenta’s front office was tasked with scouring the region, not only identifying talent, but convincing those players to sign up for a team that had yet to play a game. That’s no longer the case. A handful of players who were opponents of Tormenta last season chose to spend the summer of 2017 in Statesboro. A solid year of competition in
the PDL has also led to an increase in players on the current Tormenta roster that play or have played collegiate soccer at the Division I level. This season’s Tormenta team also has a distinct international flavor. Many talented European players leave their club teams for the chance to learn and play at universities in the United States. Tormenta’s coaching staff and front office have strong international connections, leading to a roster that features a handful of players from England and Spain, guys from Ireland and Germany, and even one all the way from Australia. Tormenta continues to build steam and grow, and the latest news out of the club is its biggest yet. Just before the 2017 season began, the club made an announcement that it is looking into the possibility of becoming a professional organization. The United Soccer League has announced plans to created a third professional tier in the United States’ soccer landscape and has already been in contact with Tormenta about steps that could lead to the Statesboro club’s inclusion when the league begins play in 2019. A bigger league would make for bigger crowds, but Tormenta has that covered as well. Along with the announcement of the possible move up came a proposed plan to build a brand new, soccer-specific stadium on the land that currently serves as the Hackers driving range.

FINDING THE RIGHT AGENT For many people, buying or selling a home is the biggest purchase or sale they will ever make. It’s no surprise, then, that most choose to involve a real estate agent in the process. With such important decisions at hand, it helps to involve a professional with experience in buying and selling homes. But with so many agents out there, it’s not always easy choosing the right one. So, how to decide? The process often depends on the individuals doing the buying or selling.
Do you really need a broker? Yes. Real estate agents work on commissions, which are typically in the neighborhood of 5 percent. If you’re selling your home for $300,000, the standard commission would be $15,000 on that sale. Naturally, a person looking to save money might be apprehensive about the commission. But ultimately, a real estate agent can help you save money in the long run. Agents have an intimate knowledge of the market and the industry. They also know your competition, the going prices in neighborhoods and the intricacies of the home-selling process. By putting a qualified agent on your team, in addition to doing your own research through the local newspaper’s real estate section, you could get more money for your house.
How do you know if you’ve found the right agent? If you’ve decided to enlist the services of an agent but don’t have one yet, finding the right one takes a little work. • Flexibility: As mentioned, involving an agent will mean you’ll have to pay a commission. A commission should always be flexible. A fixed commission isn’t legal, so if the agent says all homes sold net a 5 percent commission, tell him or her you know otherwise, and look for another agent. In general, the more expensive an area is to live, the less the commission will be. More expensive neighborhoods should result in lower commissions, while less expensive areas will more than likely lean toward a higher commission. • Reputation: Lots of people like to move closer to friends and family. Ask friends and family if they can recommend a real estate agent. If they can, this can be a
quick way to find one, though it should be noted that you’ll benefit if you make yourself the center of a competition between agents. (You’re more likely to lower the commission if you do.) Obviously, avoid those who have negative reputations. • Experience: How much experience an agent has is very important. Ideally, you’d like one who is established in the area where you want to live. Such an agent will have an extensive knowledge of the neighborhoods, knowing the pricing history of homes bought and sold and likely what life is like in the neighborhood. Ask for a recent transaction history of homes they’ve sold. Additionally, check with the local government to see if any complaints have been filed in recent years. • Trust your gut: Always be wary of agents who are trying to make a home into something it’s not. If he or she is rambling on and on about renovating a home, the home’s probably not a worthwhile investment. A real estate agent shouldn’t have to sell you on a home, but rather help you find the right one.

First Friday Downtown For a fun, free way to spend a Friday evening, check out downtown Statesboro’s First Friday. First Fridays have become a downtown Statesboro tradition. Ogeechee International Film Festival In March, Statesboro was the site of history in the making — literally — as the Ogeechee International Film Festival made its debut as the very first film festival in the United States dedicated solely to historical films. The festival is the brainchild of GSU Associate Professor of History Dr. Michael Scott Van Wagenen. It was organized by the Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Statesboro Herald and Georgia Southern. Filmmakers from all over the world were invited to submit films on a variety of historical subjects, with the condition being that submissions contain valid historical research and promote the accuracy of historical facts. The festival also debuted “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive,” a film by Boston-based filmmaker Eric Strange, who was a featured speaker during the event.Statesboro residents were among the first to see the film, which was also premiered on PBS as a part of the American Masters series.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER at Georgia Southern University
The Performing Arts Center at Georgia Southern University is a modern performance facility, featuring an 825-seat theater complete with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. Since opening its doors in 2002, the PAC has served the GSU and regional communities by providing world-class performing arts, music and dance as well as educational programs. In addition to presenting a season of professional touring shows, the PAC also hosts events for campus departments, student groups and community organizations. The Theatre and Performance students at the Center for Art & Theatre deliver performances far beyond what one might expect from undergraduate performers. Under the direction of professors Lisa Abbott, Nick Newell and other guest directors, the CAT’s shows consistently defy expectations for student productions, with an incredible ability to shock and amaze. The Black Box Theatre in which they perform is a versatile, intimate space.. Because they lead a college group, the directors are able to take on more challenging, controversial shows that other venues might shy from, and they turn those scripts into award-winning performances. Earlier this year, the group brought the award-winning musical Chicago to the stage. The production perfectly showcased the triplethreat talents of many of GSU’s finest students, as well as outstanding choreography. The CAT is also the home for the Wham! Bam! Play Slam! an annual play festival held in August that allows playwrights to showcase their work. Directors and casts are randomly chosen, and playwrights have just a day to prepare, and the productions hit the stage that evening.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS Museum Packed with fun, the Georgia Southern Museum offers visitors a chance to learn more about Georgia’s unique Coastal Plain region. The museum’s collections and exhibits tell the story of the evolving environments, animals and cultures that have called it home over the past 100 million years. It is located on Sweetheart Circle on the Georgia Southern campus. The museum presents a variety of changing exhibits throughout the year, in the main facility and at locations around campus and in town. The changing presentations feature dynamic and interactive exhibits based on the work and research of the university’s faculty and students. These exhibits bring the world to visitors and encompass opportunities for them to learn about history, archaeology, science, business, health or any number of fascinating subjects. Additionally, the rediscovery of the incredibly well preserved Confederate Prisoner of War camp, Camp Lawton, by Georgia Southern University archaeology students is uncovering a history thought lost. The museum offers programs to appeal to children, adults, families and teachers with hands-on programs for K-12 school groups. The activities allow children to explore the museum’s natural and cultural history collection and changing exhibits. Admission is $2 per person, and free for children 3 and younger. Museum members and Georgia Southern students are admitted at no charge. On the last Saturday of each month, entrance is free for all visitors. Permanent exhibits take you back 100 million years to a time when mosasaurs, large marine reptiles,
prowled the oceans that covered most of southern Georgia. Children can crawl under the mosasaur and look through a viewing bubble right into the middle of the rib cage. The museum is also home to the Georgiacetus vogtlensis, one of the oldest and most primitive ancient whales discovered in North America. Planetarium The Georgia Southern University Planetarium is an immersive astronomy laboratory in the Department of Physics, within the College of Science and Mathematics. It is used to teach university courses and labs daily using the latest Digistar 5 digital full-dome planetarium system. There are free monthly public events on exciting astronomy topics and fulldome presentations with telescopic observing outdoors, weather permitting. In addition, the planetarium offers free educational fulldome and live shows for university students/departments, public/private/home school groups, grades Pre-K–12, and family/adult groups/clubs by advance reservation on weekdays. GEORGIA SOUTHERN CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS Georgia Southern Botanic Garden The garden features more than 11 acres of gardens on the early 20th-century farmstead of Dan and Catharine Bland. Wander the trails, paths and courtyards and explore the intriguing natural and cultural wonders of the Southeastern Coastal Plain, where persistence, ingenuity, and a deep respect have bound people to the land. Discover a significant and growing collection of native and heritage plants, including more than 20 of the state’s protected species. Peer down a pitcher plant, gaze upward at the gnarled branches of a magnificent longleaf pine, and inhale the heavy scent of confederate jasmine. Wrap your hands around the handles of a plow or admire the 1929 cover of Georgia Magazine, which features Mr. Dan and Miss Catharine’s farm as an inspiration for all of Georgia. The garden offers woodland trails, a landscape garden of Coastal Plain natives, a native azalea collection, an arboretum, a children’s garden, a complex of early 20thcentury farm buildings, the Rural Life Museum, the Whelchel Camellia Garden, heritage gardens, a bog and sandhill, the Kennedy Outdoor Classroom and the Heritage Pavilion, available for rental. The garden is a research and educational resource for faculty and students and provides undergraduate and graduate programs, projects, and internships as well as continuing education programs for the community. Wildlife/Raptor Center
Located on the Georgia Southern campus, the Center for Wildlife Education and Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center have attractions for young and old alike. The 18-acre center provides eight different habitat displays for 11 species of birds of prey, including a wetlands area, old-growth forest and a mountain display. Each display allows guests to view the raptors in their natural environment. Visitors can take a self-guided tour along the Raptor Walkway to see the birds. The elevated walkway allows viewers unobstructed and up-close encounters with a bald eagle’s nest, complete with Glory on display. The university’s bald eagle mascot, Freedom, makes his home in Freedom’s Courtyard. In addition, the center also is home to a Harris hawk, Clyde, the former mascot of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks known to NBA fans as “Spirit.” In June 2012, the Raptor Center welcomed its third bald eagle, Franklin, a rescued eagle. A campground is available for rental, allowing groups to camp under the stars, and a playground is available on Center grounds for hours of wild fun. The center also has a “children’s discovery trail” featuring 17 exploratory stations. Inside visitors can test their nature skills by trying to identify more than 50 animals in the exhibit. The center hosts thousands of school children on field trips each year. It also offers summer camps teaching students about wildlife. Shopping by Lantern Light In November, kick off the holiday season by heading downtown for an evening of shopping. The event celebrates the fall harvest and is the last Mainstreet Farmers Market event of the season. Under the soft glow of lanterns, the market is transformed to a magical venue. Firecracker Fest Farmers Market The Mainstreet Statesboro Farmers Market has become a regional, fresh-food market featuring more than 45 vendors every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., beginning in April and running through November. The market is held near the center of downtown Statesboro in Charlie Olliff Square behind Sea Island Bank. Free parking is available in several downtown lots within short walking distances from the market. Every Saturday, the market offers different live entertainment by local or visiting performers. Vendors offer seasonal produce, grass-fed beef, hormone-free poultry and pork, honey, eggs, baked goods, milk, ice cream and cheese, as well as locally produced crafts and plants. The Daily Meal ranked it No. 62 in its “101 Best Farmers Markets in America” article, and Deep South Magazine placed it among “10 of the South’s Best Farmers Markets.” The Statesboro Farmers Market is able to accept cash, credit, debit and EBT cards as payment. Bulloch County knows how to celebrate Independence Day. If you’re in town, head out to Mill Creek Regional Park and celebrate this patriotic time with a bang. The celebration boasts plenty of concessions, kids’ inflatables, live music and traditional July Fourth events, including a frog-jumping contest. A spectacular fireworks show, one of the biggest in southeast Georgia, tops off the evening after sunset, following live music and dancing. MLK Day Parade This annual parade through downtown Statesboro brings the community, churches and local organizations together to celebrate the life of one of America’s greatest leaders. The 2018 parade is scheduled for Monday, January 15.
ArtsFest Early spring brings an explosion of color to Georgia Southern University’s Sweetheart Circle, and not just in the beautiful flora. ArtsFest, an annual arts event, offers residents from Bulloch and surrounding counties the opportunity to unleash their inner artist. The festival, completely powered by volunteers, is a free public event that offers visitors a chance to create their own art, buy unique treasures crafted by artists from GSU and across the region, watch and listen to an array of performances and treat their taste buds to culinary delights. The event brings thousands of visitors to campus each year. ArtsFest’s purpose is to promote the arts and art education through performing, exhibiting and demonstrating artists. Kiwanis Rodeo “It’s bulls and blood, it’s dust and mud, it’s the roar of the Sunday crowd. It’s the white in the knuckles, the gold in the buckle he’ll win the next go-round….” Garth Brooks knew what he was talking about. The first Kiwanis Rodeo took place in April 2010. The event was a complete success with sellout crowds the entire weekend. The now-annual spring event features bronc busting, barrel racing, bull riding and more. Rodeo clowns entice the crowd to roar with laughter and vendors serve up hot, tasty food as well as offer hats, belts and other Western accessories. The International Professional Rodeo-sanctioned event welcomes cowboys and cowgirls from all over the world, including Brazil and Canada. Look for the next Kiwanis Rodeo in spring 2018.

Brooklet Peanut Festival
Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair Each October, the smell of cotton candy and funnel cake tickles your nose. Sparkling, multicolored lights illuminate the eastern horizon and laughter fills the air. It can only mean one thing: The fair is in town. The weeklong event kicks off on Monday with the largest parade of the year. Thousands of people line the streets of downtown Statesboro for the parade, then head out to the fairgrounds on Georgia Highway 67 for dinner at the Pancake House, Barbeque Hut or from one of the many vendors. Adults browse the exhibits, crafts and arts displays while the kids head toward the lights of the midway and rides. Amusements of America provides the rides and tries to have at least one new adventure every fall. Each day offers different entertainment options from live music — featured every evening — to livestock shows to special guest performers, such as escape artists. For more than 50 years, the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair has been the largest fundraiser for the Statesboro Kiwanis Club, and it funds the majority of gifts and scholarships the club offers the community. The 2017 fair is scheduled for October 16–21.
Each August, the town of Brooklet goes a little nuts. Why? The peanut harvest is in. On Saturday, August 19, 2017, it’ll be worth your while to take a 10-minute ride down U.S. Highway 80 East to enjoy the annual Peanut Festival. Beginning with a morning parade, the celebration includes a street dance, a slow tractor race and a kiddie pedal tractor race. The focus is on peanuts, of course, but this celebration of agriculture brings fun and frolic to the community. Peanuts can be had in any way imaginable, including in baked goods, boiled, roasted or fried. Vendors hawk their wares, including a variety of foods, toys, jewelry and novelty items, while various musical groups and soloists entertain the crowd. Cloggers and other performers provide amusement as well, and many folks come to the festival just for the slow tractor race. This “race” is more of a display, with antique tractor lovers competing to see just how slow they can go without their ancient treasures shutting down. The night ends with a street dance for all ages.
Turpentine Festival The Catface Turpentine Festival takes place at the historic E. C. Carter Turpentine Still, located in the heart of Portal. The festival’s highlight is the turpentine processing, in which pine tar and gum are “cooked down” to make turpentine using the historic still. The event includes fun, music and activities for the whole family, approximately 150 exhibits and vendors offer handmade arts and crafts, rosin boiled potatoes, funnel cakes, barbecue, fresh fried pork rinds and boiled peanuts. The 2017 Catface Turpentine Festival is set for October 7.

& r ecreation Splash in the Boro
Since Splash in the Boro Family Waterpark and Aquatics Center opened in 2004, more than half a million people have enjoyed the hottest place to cool down each summer. A $5.7 million expansion, scheduled to debut in June 2017, adds a giant wave pool to the list of attractions. The facility already features several pool areas including an 800-foot lazy river, three slides — two body and one inner tube — and two lane-pools. There is also a mat racer, a four-lane, 350-foot-long racing track where Splash guests can race against each other or against the clock, and the FlowRider, which creates a perpetual wave that allows riders to feel the power and acceleration of actually surfing. (There are boogie boards, as well, so you don’t have to be an expert surfer). If you have little ones, take note: Splash in the Boro also offers a zero-depth spray pool that is a blast for kids who can’t swim yet. There are also picnic tables, changing areas and lockers, a gift shop and shaded areas. Three concession stands offer traditional summer fun fare such as hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza and french fries, as well as more health-conscious options such as sub sandwiches. Kids of all ages can find ice cream treats, such as the popular Dippin’ Dots, at Splash in the Boro. As a Georgia Southern University, Ogeechee Technical College or East Georgia State College current student or staff member, you’re eligible for a discounted ticket price. The waterpark closes at the end of summer, with

Labor Day as its last day of operation for the season. But the competition and therapy pools remain open yearround under a heated bubble dome. Splash is operated by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department. The county government backed financing for the park’s construction and expansions, but it pays its own way with fees and concessions. The waterpark is also a major generator of summer jobs for young people. Splash in the Boro Family Waterpark is located inside Mill Creek Regional Park, off Georgia Highway 24. Mill Creek Park Located off Georgia Highway 24 just a few miles from downtown, Mill Creek Regional Park is Bulloch County’s main park. With 155 acres, Mill Creek offers numerous playing fields, picnic pavilions, two playgrounds, tennis courts and a scenic lake with paved walking path. There is also a 1.25-mile trail where you can jog, roller blade or just walk your dog. Every Fourth of July, Mill Creek hosts an Independence Day Celebration with one of the best fireworks displays in southeast Georgia. DIRECTIONS TO MILL CREEK Take Fair Road south to the 301 bypass (Veterans Memorial Parkway); turn left and go through two traffic lights; at the third light, make a right turn on Highway 24. Go about 1 mile. The park is on the right. From downtown, take East Main Street north, and cross U.S. Highway 80. At the bypass, go straight. The park is about a mile on your right.

Parks & Recreation Department The Statesboro Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department (SBCPRD) has plenty of activities to keep families busy. Programs offer recreational games and activities while promoting sportsmanship and teamwork. Most sports are offered in Statesboro, Brooklet, Portal, Stilson and Nevils. All you sluggers out there should be ready to hit the diamond! Whether you have a hankering for T-ball, baseball or softball, the Parks & Recreation Department has what you’re looking for. There are numerous baseball/ softball opportunities, including Pee Wee for age 4, Co-Ed play (ages 5–7), Youth Baseball (ages 7–14), Youth Fast Pitch Softball (ages 7–14), and Senior Baseball/ Softball (grades 9–12). Just head to the Honey Bowen building or visit www.bullochrec.com to find out about registration dates and deadlines. If you’d rather be swinging a club than a bat, inquire about the Golf Program, operated in conjunction with Hackers Golf Park. The program is open for youth ages 5–17. Some prefer swinging a racket over a club or a bat. If tennis is your game, check out the high school and adult lessons and leagues. Tennis lessons and camps are available for those who just want to improve their skills. Tennis is offered all year long in the Mill Creek Tennis Complex at Mill Creek Park. SBCPRD offers soccer in the spring and fall for ages 4–17. Players learn the basic skills of the game while having a great time. You can also play a round of disc golf. There is a 9-hole short course and an 18-hole course. Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County The Boys & Girls Club is a youth development organization whose programs are designed to enhance the academic, social and physical development of school-age children. State Parks Bulloch County has two great state parks within easy driving distance. George L. Smith State Park near Twin City in Emanuel County is rustic and beautiful, with a 412-acre mill pond and 10 miles of canoe trails. Hiking trails take walkers through south Georgia woodlands, where they can explore local flora and fauna, then come back to a lakeside campsite or a cabin. The refurbished Parrish Mill, built in 1880, is a focal point for visitors who enjoy the covered bridge over the dam. The 1,634 acre park boasts 25 tent, trailer and RV sites as well as eight rental cottages, picnic shelters, a group shelter and playground facilities. Magnolia Springs State Park near Millen in Jenkins County is home to crystal clear springs. It is a popular destination for visitors but was once the site of Camp Lawton, a Confederate prison built in 1864. The stockades and guard towers have been replaced with beautiful scenery, but visitors still can see the earthen breastworks and imagine the prison site. The natural springs produce 7 million gallons of water daily, and visitors can enjoy the view from several wooden platforms stretched across the pools. Storyboards scattered around provide historical and educational information about the springs. A wooden bridge carries visitors across the water, providing a bird’s-eye view of local wildlife, and leads to a freshwater aquarium featuring native species of fish. The 1,071-acre park offers playgrounds, a swimming pool and hiking and biking trails, as well as a 28-acre lake. GEORGE L. SMITH

Hunting and Fishing Fishing enthusiasts think they are in paradise when looking for a fishing hole in Bulloch County. Anyone with a fishing license can fish legally along the banks of public rivers or tributaries such as the Ogeechee River, Mill Creek, Little Lotts Creek, Upper Lotts Creek and Lower Lotts Creek. Put a boat in at one of the Ogeechee River’s many landings and enjoy the scenery as you fish. Just make sure you aren’t on private property. Bulloch has many lakes and ponds, and many owners will give permission to fish — as long as you ask first and respect the land. Lake Collins, also known as DeLoach’s Lake, is west of Portal and borders Candler County. The blackwater lake is fed by a creek and is home to otters, beavers, alligators and more. The lake is privately owned, but land owners and guests have fishing rights. Cypress Lake in Southern Bulloch County near Register offers picturesque scenery, plenty of water and pole-bending fish — but most of the lake is private property. Oglesby’s Pond feeds Lake Collins, northeast of Portal. Another popular fishing spot is Simmons Pond off Georgia Highway 46 in the Nevils-Bay Gall area. Fishing rights memberships are available here. Bulloch County is full of wildlife, but written permission from a landowner must be obtained prior to hunting on private property.
Nearby state-owned wildlife management areas such as Tuckahoe in Screven County offer hunting to licensed citizens. Hunting and fishing licenses are available at several local retailers county-wide.
Area Golf Courses If golf is your game, you have some options to choose from locally. The private course at Forest Heights Country Club on Country Club Road has an 18-hole course, pro shop, driving range and a practice green. It’s also the home of the Schenkel Invitational, one of college golf’s premier events. Georgia Southern Golf Course opened to the public in 2013. It’s located off of Golf Club Road about five miles outside of Statesboro. Students can schedule a tee time using their Eagle ID. Hackers Golf Park, ranked as one of the nation’s top 100 driving ranges, has a little bit of everything, including a lighted driving range, practice green and pro shop as well as a fun miniature golf course. If golf’s not your thing, grab a helmet and take a whack in the batting cages. It’s at Old Register Road just off the Highway 301 bypass.

& r ecreation Willie McTell Trail
The Willie McTell Trail is one of the nicest paths to walk, jog or bike in Statesboro and is a convenient way to get from downtown to the Georgia Southern campus. Just longer than a mile, the trail stretches from Triangle Park on East Main Street to the northeast corner of campus on Fair Road. The smooth, wide path is lighted, landscaped and offers bike racks at both ends. One of the most interesting aspects of the trail is the benches. Created by Georgia Southern students using metal, wood and other materials, these unique pieces fuse art with function. The trail is named for the legendary blues guitarist Blind Willie McTell. A Statesboro native probably best known for his song “Statesboro Blues,” McTell gained a reputation as one of the best blues artists in the country, even earning praise from Bob Dylan. Check out the trail for a nice stroll outdoors.

S&S Greenway The Bulloch Greenway Partnership is committed to the development of a network of greenways that will provide Bulloch County residents with convenient access to opportunities for walking, jogging and biking. The partnership envisions a network of greenway trails connecting different areas of the community, educating residents about the environment and providing alternative transportation opportunities in Bulloch County. The first phase of the S&S Greenway is a newly constructed asphalt trail that connects Gentilly Road to Veterans Memorial Parkway near the Statesboro Crossing shopping center. Eventually, this trail will lead to Brooklet, a community approximately 10 miles from Statesboro. The Greenway Partnership members include the Bulloch Greenway Steering Committee, the StatesboroBulloch County Parks and Recreation Department, Georgia Southern University and area government agencies and businesses.

East Georgia Regional Medical Center Built in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 149-bed acute-care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion, an adjacent medical office building and an outpatient diagnostic imaging center. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those health care facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. In 2014, it was named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability Core Measures Honor Roll. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s health care team consists of approximately 650 employees and more than 100 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established EGRMC’s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. The medical center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including same-day surgery and ambulatory care, a sleep center, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment, including a new 64-slice low-dose CT machine and a new 3D digital mammography machine. EGRMC also recently updated its interventional radiology/vascular suite to top-of-the-line equipment. The hospital is also home to the only robotic surgical system in the area,
which allows faster and less painful recovery time for qualifying patients. In spring 2010, East Georgia Regional expanded its service line to include interventional cardiology. The expansion of the cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive the highest quality care without leaving Statesboro.

Farming in the South Agriculture is big business in Bulloch County, which is the No. 1 row-crop county in the state. The area offers many farming sectors, including livestock, berries, cotton, tobacco, corn, wheat and Southern pine. You can stroll through the pumpkin patches and strawberry fields or see grits being milled before your eyes at one of the area’s many visitor-friendly farms. 2016 Farmer & Conservationist of the Year One of Bulloch County’s most well-known people in the agriculture world, Raybon Anderson, was honored by being named the 2016 Ag Partner by the StatesboroBulloch County Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Committee. Georgia’s agriculture commissioner, Gary Black, was unable to be at the early-morning Farm City Breakfast, where Anderson was given the award, but he still introduced Anderson and issued congratulations via a short video. The Farm City breakfast is part of the Farm City Week, which agribusiness committee member Kyle Shedd said was “national incentive to celebrate the relationship between farmers and the community.” Georgia state Rep. I’ve served 25 years in public office and I wouldn’t take anything for it.” The Bulloch County native served almost two terms as Bulloch County Commission chairman in the early ‘90s, finishing out Lamar DeLoach’s term when he resigned. He didn’t seek reelection after the second term, and was appointed by then-Gov. Sonny Perdue to the Department of Natural Resources Board, and later, the Department of Transportation Board. Gov. Nathan Deal later appointed him to the Agriculture Authority in Perry, where he served five years. In 1963, Anderson founded Bulloch Fertilizer, and two years later, “the company built the first liquid suspension fertilizer plant of its kind in Southeast Georgia and coined the SUR-GRO brand name. A retail store was added, offering chemicals, seed, feed
and farm supplies, according to the company website (www.bullochfertilizer.com.) In the early 1990s Anderson entered the turf grass market, blending and spreading fertilizer for area golf courses, sod farms and recreational facilities. In 1994 “a state-of-the-art fertilizer blending facility” was added. The Bulloch Fertilizer retail store section was closed in 2005, but a bigger, more diverse store was added – Anderson’s General Store is operated through a partnership by Anderson’s son Mike Anderson and his wife Vicki Marsh Anderson. In addition to these enterprises and duties, Raybon Anderson has farmed since the 1970s, raising peanuts, cotton and soybeans, which he does to this day. Harville Farms recognized for Georgia Centennial Farm Award One of Bulloch County’s oldest farms, a landmark graced by an enormous family home that is known for its intriguing history, was recognized during the 22nd annual Georgia Centennial Farm Awards Ceremony at the Georgia National Fair in Perry in October 2015. Harville Family Farms was one of 13 farms recognized for the Centennial Family Farm Award, which recognizes farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more that are not listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Tommy Harville, who owns Harville Family Farms and still farms the property on Harville Road, raises cattle and grows crops such as soybeans, cotton, peanuts and “a few pecans.” The farm can be traced back to land grant records in 1818 but was purchased by Samuel Winkler Harville in 1862, Harville said. According to records from the Bulloch County Historical Society (bullochhistory.com), the farm was originally 754 acres. Samuel Harville was one of the two delegates Bulloch County sent to the 1861 Secession Convention in Milledgeville. He voted for Georgia to secede from the Union. “Samuel’s son, Keebler Henry Harville, purchased the property and built the Harville House as a onestory house around 1894. The second story was added 10 years later resulting in a total of 14 rooms to accommodate a growing family,” the site reads. Tommy Harville said the farm had expanded during his grandfather’s time, but is now just 120 acres. Tommy is now the only family member left who comes directly from Samuel Harville’s line, with the exception of his two sons, he said. For years, dreams of restoring the historical Harville House have been shattered by expense, but a new effort by Harville and his relatives may result in funds to preserve the home. An old barn is being renovated and expanded to create a venue for family reunions and weddings. Revenue from renting the facility in the future may be used to restore the home. According to the Bulloch County Historical Society website, Tommy Harville’s grandfather Keebler designed the house. “The lumber used was cut and sawn from timber grown on the farm. By the time of Keebler’s death in 1946, the farm had grown to 2,800 acres. More 70 • Bulloch County Guide 2017

Newcomers, you’re invited to join the Statesboro Newcomers’ Club. The club offers new residents the opportunity to socialize with other newcomers, as well as longtime residents. Meetings include “meet and greet” activities, a short program intended to inform newcomers about organizations and events in the community, and light refreshments. Many club members meet for lunch after the meeting. Some members participate in canasta and other special interest groups that also meet during the month. BULLOCH COUNTY airport
Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport is one of Bulloch County’s best kept secrets. It is the doorway that connects Bulloch County’s citizens and businesses to the state, nation and the rest of the world. The airport is located three miles northeast of Statesboro’s central business district and is owned by the city of Statesboro and Bulloch County. The airport sits on 834 acres with two paved runways. The primary runway is 6,000 feet long, and the secondary runway is 4,382 feet long. Bulloch County operates the airport, providing fueling, tie-downs, hangar rentals, pilot supplies, a pilot lounge and flight-planning resources. Major corporations find the airport invaluable when transporting people, equipment and goods in and out of the region. Georgia Southern University’s athletic department, alumni and guests routinely use the airport. The Georgia Forestry Commission maintains a base of operations at the airport and has three aircraft to aid in forest firefighting. Charter Services are available through Imagine Air. Skydiving is provided by The Jumping Place, while flight training and aircraft
rental is provided by MidCoast Aviation Services. The U.S Air Force Auxiliary’s Statesboro “Eagle” Composite Squadron (GA451) of the Civil Air Patrol also calls the Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport home.

Hearts and Hands Clinic In its sixth year of operation, the clinic continues to provide more services to low-income Bulloch County residents who lack adequate health insurance. After being founded in Son’s Light Fellowship Baptist Church on U.S. Highway 301 South, it moved to its own space, a building at 127 N. College St. in downtown Statesboro. Hearts and Hands provides basic health screenings and dental services for people in need of serious work. And, thanks to a nearly $25,000 grant it received last year from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Coastal Georgia, the clinic now can provide mammograms. Komen Coastal Georgia is based in Savannah and serves nine counties, including Bulloch, Bryan and Effingham. Bulloch County had the second-highest mortality rate attributed to cancer between 2003 and 2007 in the agency’s service area, according to data compiled by the state in 2010. Open Hearts Community Mission
A local and privately funded rescue mission shelter, Open Hearts offers two programs. The Friends & Neighbors program is a short-term emergency shelter. New Life Institute is crafted to the needs of the individual, and offers a course of study to help the 72 • Bulloch County Guide 2017
individual get the skills needed to gain a better place in life. The mission, located at 39 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, has 28 beds and two apartments for families in crisis, with separate wings for men and women.The shelter has a non-tolerance policy for drugs, alcohol, tobacco and violence/threat of violence. The shelter’s mission is not simply to provide for the basic needs of the homeless, but to help them get back on their feet. Those services also include programs to help people obtain their GED diplomas, determine their career skills and get matched with jobs suited for their abilities. The mission, founded in 2012, has served hundreds of people in need.
ADOPT A HOMELESS PET Bulloch County Animal Shelter Hundreds of animals needing good homes are brought to the Bulloch County Animal Shelter each year. They are available for adoption for a small fee and the cost of a rabies shot and spay or neutering. The shelter is located just off U.S. Highway 301 North and is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Tuesday and Friday from 12:30–5 p.m. Learn more at bullochcoanimalshelter.org. The Humane Society The Humane Society is a nonprofit charitable animal welfare organization with a goal to end the need for euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals in Bulloch County. Augusta, Georgia Augusta was named in honor of Augusta, Princess of Wales, daughter-in-law of King George II of Great Britain and mother of King George III of Great Britain, and was the second state capital of Georgia from 1785 until 1795 (alternating for a period with Savannah, the first. Augusta is located on the Georgia/South Carolina border, about 150 miles east of Atlanta. It is the secondlargest city and second largest metropolitan area in the state. Augusta is the birthplace of the Southern Baptist denomination, and the location of Springfield Baptist Church, the oldest autonomous African-American Baptist church in the nation. Morehouse College was founded in the basement of the church. AfricanAmerican history is honored at the Lucy Craft Laney museum. Various religious denominations have erected churches in downtown Augusta that are now historical landmarks such as Saint Paul’s Church and Sacred Heart Cultural Center. Built in 1914, the Butt Memorial Bridge was placed in memory of Archibald Butt. It was the first memorial in the world to the RMS Titanic, and is the only such memorial in Georgia. Augusta’s official nickname is The Garden City. It is also known as Masters City, because it plays host to the Masters Golf Tournament. In hip-hop circles, the city is referred to as “The AUG.” The city adopted the motto, “We Feel Good,” in recognition of native son and soul music legend James Brown. The city also dedicated a statue to James Brown, which is located downtown at the Augusta Common. Augusta also has a well-established arts community. Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, Morris Museum of Art, Artists Row and the Art Council are just a few in the art community. Atlanta, Georgia From sports to history to entertainment to cultural activities, Atlanta offers something for everyone. At a little more than three hours away, the “Gateway to the South” is close enough to spend the day or the weekend and still make it back for class. One of Atlanta’s most popular attractions is the Georgia Aquarium. Be sure to plan to spend several hours there, as it is the largest aquarium in the world. Charleston, South Carolina Charleston was founded as Charlestown or Charles Towne, Carolina, in 1670, and moved to its present location (Oyster Point) from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River in 1680. It adopted its present name in 1783. The population was estimated to be 120,083 in 2010, making it the second most populous city in South Carolina, closely behind the state capital, Columbia. Charleston annually hosts Spoleto Festival USA, a 17-day art festival featuring over 100 performances by individual artists in a variety of disciplines. Charleston’s “other” festival is the MOJA Arts Festival, which is a major, two-week celebration of African-American and Caribbean arts, music and culture. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition also is held in the city, as well as the Food + Wine Festival, Family Circle Tennis Cup, Cooper River Bridge Run and the Maritime Festival, which is held annually in May and features tall ships, boatbuilding and the Charleston to Bermuda Race. In 2007, Charleston Fashion Week made its first appearance and was a huge success. It is held by the fashion publication Charleston Magazine and is an annual event in the city. It is like most of the major fashion weeks in other major cities. As an old, colonial city, Charleston has a wide variety of museums and historical attractions. The Old Exchange and Customs House in downtown Charleston, finished in 1771, is arguably the third most important Colonial building in the nation (behind Faneuil Hall in Boston and Independence Hall in Philadelphia). The building features a dungeon that held various signers of the Declaration of Independence and hosted events for George Washington in 1791 and the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1788. It also has served as a U.S. post office, the first Confederate post office, and was used by the United States Coast Guard. Not far from Charleston is Fort Moultrie, which was instrumental in delivering a critical defeat to the British in the American Revolutionary War, and Fort Sumter, the reputed site of the “first shot” of the American Civil War. Patriots Point, located across the river in nearby Mount Pleasant, is also home to the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown as well as several other naval vessels. There are also several former plantations in the area, including
Boone Hall Plantation, Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation and Middleton Place. The Charleston Tea Plantation is located just south of the city on Wadmalaw Island and is a true working tea farm. Charleston’s premier art museum is the Gibbes Museum of Art, one of the country’s oldest art organizations and home to over 10,000 works of fine art. Also the Charleston Museum was the first museum in the Americas. Other attractions include the South Carolina Aquarium, the Audubon Swamp Garden, Cypress Gardens and Charles Towne Landing.

Jacksonville, Florida Jacksonville, the largest city in Florida, sits near the top of the state like a Welcome Wagon for Georgia travelers. In 2010, Jacksonville ranked as the United States’ 11th most populous city, with 821,784 residents. About 25 miles south of the Georgia border, Jacksonville is in the First Coast region of northeast Florida and is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River. Jacksonville is home to dozens of events. The Art Walk, a monthly outdoor art festival on the first Wednesday of each month, is sponsored by Downtown Vision, Inc., an organization that works to promote artistic talent and venues on the First Coast. One of the most popular sporting events is the annual Gate River Run, the US National Championship 15K since 1994 and largest 15K race in the country. The Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens broke ground on a new center in April 2007 and opened in 2016. The Veterans Memorial Wall is a somber and moving tribute to local servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for our country. A ceremony is held each Memorial Day recognizing any service woman or man from Jacksonville who died in the previous year. The Treaty Oak is a massive, 200-year-old tree at Jesse Ball Dupont Park in downtown. Office workers from nearby buildings sit on benches to eat lunch or read a book in the shade of its canopy. The city center includes the Jacksonville Landing and the Jacksonville Riverwalks. The Landing is a popular riverfront dining and shopping venue, accessible by River Taxi from the Southbank Riverwalk. Shipwreck Island in Jacksonville Beach is the only waterpark in Duval County. It opened in 1995 and changes rides every few years to keep the season passholders coming back.
