LIKE THE NEW LOOK? It's that time of year again â&#x20AC;&#x201D; when the good folks of Statesboro vote on the Boro's best people, places and things, honoring great local restaurants and other providers of goods and services. We asked and you, our lovely readers, have spoken. You'll find the results of your votes here in the pages of the eighth annual Boro Awards. Because we seem to be getting on in years, we've made some design changes to this year's edition. "Boro Awards" has always been a punny little nod to our fond moniker for the city, which happens to sound a good bit like the Spanish word for donkey. In past issues, we have filled these pages with adorable little burros to carry the conceit. This year, though, we're departing from tradition in favor of new horizons. We have bid goodbye to our beloved little burros (well, except for my Editor Donkey in the corner, which I just couldn't bear to part with), but we hope you like the new look. Just like last year, we've asked some of the contest's first-place winners to tell us, in their own words, what makes their business so special. You can read what they had to say in the following pages. Since moving to Statesboro two years ago, I've had plenty of time and great opportunities to experience the many things our town has to offer

No matter how good I can make a tattoo turn out, I always look for ways to make the next one better. Awards and publications that feature my art are great and I am thankful for the ones I have earned, but I want every piece of art I produce to be better than the last one. I never want to hit a plateau and just be another typical tattooer in another typical tattoo shop. I love what I do. I live, eat and breathe tattooing. I take it very seriously, and I try to make it show every time I do a tattoo and then improve even more on the next one. What sets you apart from other professionals in the same field? When I opened Velvet Rose, I wanted it to be different in the sense that we don’t just want to be another tattoo/body art studio. Those are a dime a dozen. We throw "typical" out of the window here.

I strive for excellence in every aspect. You don’t see flash art here. You don’t get arrogant, ego-driven artists with attitudes, and we're not trying to be "cool." It’s not about image with me: It’s about art, and being the best I can be every time my machines are running. I refuse to be like everyone else and hold myself and everyone here to a higher standard. We are constantly raising the bar at Velvet Rose. What do you want customers to know about what to expect when they come to you? I want clients to know they can expect excellence.
