Almost three years after a traffic accident in Statesboro led a family through a series of miracles, the mother of a young boy injured in the crash has written a book about the ordeal. In Prayers from Fiji, Ellen Murkison captures the raw emotion she and her family experienced after the accident Dec. 2, 2011, left her son Brian severely injured. The family had just left a local Christmas lights display on Old River Road when the driver of their vehicle ran a stop sign at the intersection of Old River Road North and Lakeview Road. All were wearing seat belts, but Brian, who was 7 at the time, suffered injuries that sent him by helicopter to a Savannah hospital. The days afterward were filled with fear, hope and prayers, but Brian’s recovery didn’t look promising, and the family was referred to hospice care. However, their faith didn’t waiver, and prayers were coming in from all over the world, mainly through social media. The family kept a map and placed pins at every location from which prayer and well wishes came. Christmas approached, and the holiday spirits were dimmed by Brian’s failing health. But what happened then is nothing short of a miracle, Murkison said and, today, Brian lives a healthy, happy life after a recovery the Murkisons attribute to prayer and to God. "We could have never expected such a tragic accident could have such a happy ending,” Murkison said during a recent visit to Statesboro, where her husband David’s parents reside. “Brian continues to improve even 2½ years later. We love sharing his story with others

and being able to give hope that anything is possible.” Today, Prayers from Fiji is available for purchase by ordering online. Murkison Special to Connect was at the Averitt Center for the Arts at 11 a.m. Saturday to launch the book, speak with the public and share her experiences. The book is officially available as of Monday at www.ellenmurkison.com and on Amazon, as well as at Colonial House of Flowers, 100 Brampton Ave., Suite 1. News releases announcing the book’s availability give sneak previews of the family’s journey through the ordeal: “When medical interventions failed, the family made the difficult decision to move their child to hospice care, one week before Christmas. Faced with what appeared to be his impending death, the story takes a dramatic turn when a ten-year-old big brother’s unwavering faith that God could heal his little brother unleashed a miraculous series of events showing that nothing is impossible. “As told from a mother’s perspective, Ellen Murkison’s memoir is more than simply a telling of the events that occurred. Her own faith was strengthened through this crisis, and she shares her insights into how to turn the worst of circumstances into something positive. A story that deserves to be told—giving hope, teaching about what it takes to overcome, and showing the possibilities for the human spirit. " For more information about the family’s experiences and the book, visit www.EllenMurkison.com, or on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/ PrayersfromFiji.w

They come and get candy every day." Sweets regularly available include Jelly Belly jellybeans, Russell Stover candies, and many loose, "vintagetype" candies, such as Squirrel Nut Zippers, Caramel Creams and Hershey's Kisses. Gifted is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., after an experiment with opening an hour earlier didn't pay off. Gay is operating the shop as a forprofit enterprise, paying a straight rent to the hospital, which is now an affiliate of Community Health Systems, America's largest forprofit hospital chain in number of locations.w

Gay worked as a computer programmer for a life insurance company in Atlanta before joining her family's firm as an agent 20 years ago, and so has about 30 years total experience in insurance. Although managing a shopping center has given her years of indirect exposure, Gay's direct work in retail was previously limited to her first, part-time job in high school. Perhaps those six months in the jewelry department at the old Rose's Variety Store gave her the bug to one day run a gift shop and create part-time jobs for students. "I decided it was a good business opportunity and would be something kind of exciting and different to do," Gay said. While she is usually downtown at the insurance office, Rushing is employing three young women, all currently college students, to serve customers at Gifted. Ali Rushing is her niece, and Hailey Allgood and Wynne Phillips are friends' relatives. Gifted stocks jewelry, purses, some baby items, books, candy and cards. Measuring about 500 square feet, Gifted is one of the smallest stores you're likely to read about here, but it has a highly visible location — inside East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The gift shop, which had been closed about 15 months, reopened June 23 as an independent business. Entrepreneur Jeanie Gay is renting the shop from the hospital and gave it the new name, "Gifted." "This is a really good opportunity that I just kind of stumbled on it and found out it was available for lease," said Gay, who also operates Rushing Insurance and is property manager of the Simmons Shopping Center downtown. Previously, going back to before the hospital was East Georgia Regional, when it was Bulloch Memorial Hospital on Grady Street, volunteers operated the gift shop. Most recently, the Auxiliary of East Georgia Regional ran it, with volunteers working under the supervision of a gift shop manager. This is the first time an independent businessperson has run the shop, confirmed Jill Cairney, the hospital's director of marketing and volunteer services. The late Pete Rushing, Gay's father, founded Rushing Insurance in 1982, specializing in crop insurance, still a mainstay of the now full-service agency. Both Rushing Insurance and the Simmons Center are owned by Gay, her brothers and their mother.

response to having the gift shop open again," Cairney said. "I received so many comments about how sad it was that it had closed, and it is just fabulous to be able to walk past a stocked shop and see employees and visitors taking advantage of the great merchandise and prices at Gifted." The Gifted owner's observations suggest that hospital employees have a sweet tooth, or maybe they've just been discovering the place and giving candy as gifts. "We've got a candy counter you wouldn't believe. ... " Gay said. "We sell usually over 100 candy items a day. And those employees love it.

Football season is back! There’s nothing quite like seeing the banks of Beautiful Eagle Creek full of activity as the boys in blue officially start preparations toward another fall of Georgia Southern football. And that activity started last Thursday. There’s also something Alex about turning on the television and seeing a live football game for the first time since the Super Bowl. And that first live game of the fall, albeit an NFL preseason game, happened Sunday night. Over the last several years, the NFL preseason has been an exciting time for Georgia Southern fans, as we have watched several of our Eagles get significant playing time in pursuing

their dreams to earn a spot on an NFL roster. Adrian Peterson was a special teams mainstay for the Chicago Bears for nearly a decade, but when he led the league in rushing a few times during the preseason, Eagle fans had reason to hope he Brown would finally get his chance during the regular season. His chance at running back never really panned out, but he had a long career by NFL standards and saw the field plenty as a specialist. Laron Scott and Brent Russell spent time with the New York Giants and Chicago Bears respectively, and got some playing time during the pre-

season a couple years ago, but neither caught on with either squad. J. J. Wilcox (Cowboys) and Darius Eubanks (Browns) not only earned roster spots, but both started games at some point during the 2013 season, so it will be fun to watch those guys as they are both in their second year. Wilcox, who is projected to start at safety this season, has already made some noise in Cowboys camp by laying the lumber to wide receiver Dez Bryant as he ran a crossing route across the middle of the field, which sparked a fight between the two. They quickly made up; after practice Bryant mentioned that he loved the fire Wilcox brought to the defense and hoped it would help bring more of that attitude to the entire team. Jerick McKinnon was drafted in the third round by the Vikings and Lavelle Westbrooks was selected in the seventh round by the Bengals, which will give Georgia Southern fans even more to watch during the preseason as they look to earn some playing time in their rookie campaigns. McKinnon figures to get plenty of carries at running back, as Minnesota already has one of the best backs in the game in seasoned veteran Adrian Peterson. Peterson has

also been prone to injury throughout his career, so they will need to have a backup who is ready to go at a moment’s notice — and McKinnon has already impressed the Vikings with his work ethic on the field and in the weight room. Moving to FBS should increase Georgia Southern’s exposure nationally and give the Eagle Nation more of our own to watch at the next level in the coming years. Hopefully these guys will become strong contributors for their respective teams and we’ll see many more Eagles in the NFL very soon. Let’s get back to the current group of Eagles. With the season just three weeks away, fall practice is in full swing. Kevin Ellison begins camp as the first team quarterback, but he has plenty of competition in Favian Upshaw and Ezayi Youyoute. L.A. Ramsby has moved from quarterback to running back and figures to see plenty of playing time at that position. Vegas Harley has moved from quarterback to safety, where he should see the field in some capacity in what has become a very deep defensive backfield. It’s hard to believe that kickoff is this month. The much-anticipated beginning to the FBS era at Georgia Southern will be here before we know it. Happy football season, Eagle Nation!w

'Guardians' breaks mold for Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy caps phase two of Marvel’s plan to bring their comic book characters to the big screen and kicks off phase three, where they bring forth characters who are obscure to the average movie-going audience while advancing the stories of the well-known stars. The challenge to making this film — about five outlaws who decide to work together to defend threats against the universe — is in introducing new and unfamiliar Marvel characters to the average movie-viewing audience. Fortunately, Marvel does it in a way that guarantees success. Even if you’re not familiar with this part of the Marvel universe, this is not a Marvel movie you want to pass on. The movie revolves around Peter Quill, played by Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt, who is

He also meets Drax the Destroyer, who is a madman driven by vengeance against the people who killed his family. Then there’s Rocket and Groot, voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel respectively, who are intergalactic thugs who specialize in weapons and battle. The movie spends very little time world-building, but gives the audience just enough information for them to follow the story.Pratt got into serious physical shape for the part, but his best feature is the way he delivers his lines. His timing that had people falling out of their chairs laughing. The interaction between the Guardians is the most fun part of the movie. At first they argue, which is hilarious. Eventually they learn to work as a team, which is even more hilarious. As the film progresses, you learn that there is more to this group of heroes than meets the eye. There are multiple storylines interwoven through great one-liners and plenty of physical comedy. Groot steals nearly every scene he is a part of. He’s powerful, peaceful and — I hate to say this about a Marvel character — he’s just cute, even though he uses

one single phrase in the entire movie. Because of the music and various pop culture references, the film is teeming with nostalgia. This movie serves as the bridge into new Marvel characters and opens up the opportunity for so many new stories in the Marvel Universe. There are some story changes and casting differences from the comic book, which might be a problem for the die-hard comic book fans, but people of common knowledge won’t be affected. The special effects work, but the costume design is so-so. It is generally difficult to melt into the film when some costumes are awesome and others just look like people with their faces painted. Still, I look forward to what’s next in the line of movies featuring the Guardians on their journey. They are the type of people who make you want to be a part of their crazy journeys. You can tell that the formula for introducing this comic was a mix of fun, memories and steady action as opposed to a slow buildup to one climactic fight at the end. As usual, there is an additional scene after the credits. This one, though, is not important to the plot. It is funny, but you could wait for the DVD.w

Godzilla once channelled fears about nuclear war, but the destruction he wreaks in the latest reboot might be playing to a different trend a little closer to home.

Block "Busters": Why we like to smash our cities

Scenes of mass destruction may address and exploit our fears and anxieties in a post-9/11 world Summer and the action-movie season is drawing to a close, and you know what that means: by August, we’ll have seen several major cities razed to the ground three or four times. Whether it’s because of superheroes, natural disasters, giant mutant dinosaurs or giant dinosaur robots, we love to see our skyscrapers fall like building blocks. For kicks, entertainment sites like the Hollywood Reporter and Buzzfeed have put together estimated damages reports summing up the monetary value these forces of destruction end up costing our cities. The numbers have been going up, with last summer’s Man of Steel topping the damage charts with a whopping $700 billion dollars worth of physical devastation wreaked on the city of Metropolis. This year’s Godzilla

reboot came stomping in with $46.4 million dollars worth of damage just to the island of Oahu, which is only one of the locations the monster crashes through. This trend is obviously successful, given that we see it repeat every year starting in June. But what is it that keeps us coming back? In an interview with the New York Daily News, Greg Pflugfelder, resident Godzilla expert at Columbia University, said, “These films always make a great deal of scene of buildings being destroyed. But the strikes are against our psychic infrastructure as well.” He argues that these movies affect us on a subconscious level, but judging by the box office sales, something in our “psychic infrastructure” clearly wants to watch our cities crumble.

The important thing to remember, according to media studies professor John Chalfa of Mercer University, is that this is not a new trend. “We’ve been destroying New York City since the 1930s in our movies,” Chalfa said. A handy map on TheConcourse. com, a culture and entertainment site, provides a graphic of just how many times various cities have been leveled by superhero battles, “creature” attacks, natural disasters, aliens and (most recently) “sharknados.” The dates go back for decades. However, Chalfa does think the movies from the 2000s, particularly the ones that depict mass destruction, have a markedly different tone. “I think one of the things that has changed — and changed dramatically — in those movies is that, pre-9/11,

there was always kind of a hope that we would overcome whatever force was destroying us,” Chalfa said. “But post-9/11 is more nihilistic. There’s more despair and hopelessness.” He said this theme is more pointedly obvious in the zombie genre, mentioning particularly the hit series The Walking Dead. “Nobody expresses any hope of ‘We’re going to get beyond this,’ ” Chalfa said. “It’s just, ‘How do we cope? How do we survive in this environment?’ ” Chalfa is far from the only person to theorize that action movies evoke our post-9/11 anxieties. Vulture writer Kyle Buchanan released an article last year titled “Is it Possible to Make a Hollywood Blockbuster Without Evoking 9/11?” He dates the trend at the 2005 War of the Worlds

Heroes often become the agents of destruction in today's action films. The cost of having your own team of costumed dogooders seems to be the amount of money it takes to rebuild after a superpowered showdown. Chalfa also mentioned that, after 9/11, films in the action and horror genres changed their approach to

“victimology” — that is, which characters end up suffering. While movies of the past presented a kind of moral

logic for those who ended up victims — either the obviously sinful or the overtly stupid — the victimology of recent films is much more arbitrary. Chalfa argues that this trend is reflective of car bombs and events like the Boston Marathon bombing or the Israel-Gaza conflict. “It’s location-based, more than anything else. And that’s a change—that’s a real change from the way that the morality of the stories played out in the past.” Last year, Zach Stentz — one of the co-writers of Thor and X-Men: First Class — wrote on the Hollywood Reporter website that scenes of widespread destruction were likely to become repetitive and that he hoped filmmakers might start leaning toward creation rather than destruction. Perhaps with the wild success of DreamWorks’ animated How to Train Your Dragon sequel last month and this month’s game-changing Guardians of the Galaxy, we’ll see a rise in world-building to counterbalance the destruction of well-known cityscapes. Then again, both Man of Steel and The Avengers are slotted for upcoming sequels. Stentz’s hope for the future of filmmaking might have to wait.w

remake, “in which Steven Spielberg at least had the decency to use the entire movie as an allegory for our feelings of post-9/11 dread and hopelessness.” Subsequent movies, Buchanan argues, take a cheap way out in using 9/11 imagery to thrill and frighten viewers. But while he faults these movies for what they do show us— the crumbling of our iconic sites and urban infrastructure—he faults them just as much for what they leave out. “It’s a bloodless massacre of concrete,” Buchanan writes, “9/11 imagery erased of its most haunting factor: the loss of life.” Particularly in the superhero genre, one rarely — if ever — sees any bodies in the scenes of mass destruction. Adversaries and innocents fall in personal encounters, but if Magneto flings a car off of the Brooklyn Bridge, it is assumed that the car is unoccupied. When office buildings smash into the street, such as in The Avengers, they appear to be empty. Chalfa thinks this is bloodless violence draws from the art form of the comics. “Go back to the X-Men comics; you see no graphic images of any kind,” he said. “Go back to the Avengers—there are big pows and cracks and booms, and people get thrown around, but you never see the consequences of any of the violence that’s going on.”

Stars willing to risk opinions on Gaza clash When director Jonathan Demme was approached to show support for all victims of the conflict in Gaza, he didn't hesitate to sign on. Actor Wallace Shawn is willing to put up with jeers on the street for his opinions about the violence. And Mark Ruffalo is determined to air his views about the fighting on Twitter, no matter the cost to his social media numbers. The Israel-Palestinian debate was once considered so delicate a topic, it was pretty much off-limits to celebrities. But in another sign that social media is intensifying how we wrestle with sensitive global issues, stars of all stripes are taking to the Internet to openly discuss the conflict that has killed more than 1,300 people. The result is a high-profile divide rarely seen within the predominantly liberal entertainment community. Demme is among dozens of musi-

cians, actors, filmmakers, authors and sports figures who have chosen to speak out about the conflict. Yet some, like pop star Rihanna and Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard, had second thoughts and erased their messages of support for Palestinians soon after they were posted. And Penelope Cruz and husband Javier Bardem quickly clarified their stand on the issue after they joined 100 Spanish signees of an open letter calling the Israeli attacks genocide. Later, more participants sought to tone down the rhetoric. Shawn, who is Jewish, narrates the video and said he's been criticized on the street in New York because of it. He said he understands the Jewish community's need for Israel to exist, but he would like to persuade those who support Israel's actions — including such notables as Scarlett Johansson,

Joan Rivers, Howard Stern and Bill Maher — that violence is unnecessary. "We're involved as American taxpayers, so, you know, I'm involved," Shawn said in an interview. "I'm actually paying for these cruel assaults on innocent civilians. So I am balancing out my own crimes to some very small extent by lending my voice and my face to a video protesting what I myself am doing." Celebrities airing views on social or political issues is nothing new, said "Reinventing Yourself" author and former presidential campaign spokeswoman Dorie Clark. "But there are some issues that are far more controversial than others." Wiping out hunger or eradicating disease are issues most people, including celebrities, can get behind, she noted. But Israel is a topic that's very personal to many people, and one that almost always causes friction. "If I were a publicist advising Hollywood celebrities, if your conscience absolutely compels you to speak out, then do it," Clark said. "But there are serious risks and people have been trying to figure out this situation for millennia and your voice or support one way or another may not be helpful to the overall debate." In some ways it may be harmful, said Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean at the pro-Israel Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles.

Hier, who has close ties to the Hollywood community, sees celebrities misinterpreting events and journalists ignoring history when describing the current conflict. Hier believes some condemning Israel are doing it to gain fans in a climate of growing anti-Semitism in Europe. "I think they think they're going to be more popular," Hier said. "Look around the world. I'm not talking about the United States; in the United States polls show two to one that people understand how the war started and they back Israel. But it's not so around the world." How each star chooses to broach the issue has varied. Many acts have canceled concerts in Israel. Some cite safety concerns. Others are actively calling for a boycott, such as Pink Floyd's Roger Waters. And some try to distance themselves from the political debate, staying with a message of peace. Ruffalo has tweeted on the issue frequently and said he's seen his following fluctuate because of it. But he's committed to using his social media voice for more than just laughs. "When you're talking to a million people, even in 140 characters, if you get 5 percent or 2 percent or 1 percent that actually think differently for a moment or see something differently for a moment, I think you've done an enormously positive thing," he said.w

After actor Wallace Shawn decided to lend his name and very recognizable voice to the growing dissent against Israel's actions in Gaza, he had people on the street express their disappointment in him. Ruffalo has tweeted on the Israel-Gaza issue frequently and said he's seen his following fluctuate because of it. But he's committed to using his social media voice for more than just entertainment.

Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean at the pro-Israel Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, believes comments like those issued by 100 Spanish citizens, including Penelope Cruz (pictured above in a file photo from 2013), in a letter accusing Israel of genocide are irresponsible. "My only wish and intention in signing that group letter is the hope that there will be peace in both Israel and Gaza," Cruz stated.
