The Steppin Stones kick off concert series Kicking off Airbound Entertainment’s concert series at Club 125, Statesboro is welcoming back The Steppin Stones, a rock trio based out of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

With only three members, The Steppin Stones is a tight-knit ensemble with a seamless, polished sound one would expect of much older musicians.

The wunderkind musicians of The Steppin Stones are all 20-and-under, but singer and guitarist Hannah Wicklund and drummer Ryan Tye have been performing together for about eight years.

Bassist Andrew Ottimo is a more recent addition, but one would never guess that from the band’s slick performances and blazingly confident aura.

Branding themselves as a classic rock band with a few distinctive stylizations, The Steppin Stones produce the kind of music that puts you in mind of summer, perfectly channeling the sound many of us grew up with but have only recently come to appreciate. The group puts a fresh, compelling face to the classic rock genre, and Wicklund’s full vocals command attention. Their discography includes an EP (“Handle Me,” 2011) and

a nine-track LP (“Looking Glass,” 2014), and their music explores the nuances of classic rock from wistful laments to bluesy tunes, climaxing in highenergy bursts of sound and rhythm.

Simultaneously familiar and fresh, The Steppin Stones deliver performances that get people up and dancing, perfect for Club 125’s wide dance floor.

They’ll be stopping in Statesboro on Thursday, March 26, and about a week later they’ll be dropping a new selftitled album at a two-night release party in downtown Savannah. As a teaser, the group released the single “False and Hollow” on their website. The song is a little darker and a little more mature than the other tracks on their music page, but it carries that same commanding earnestness. In addition to the cover songs that gave the band their start, the audience can expect a few more teasers to the upcoming album during Thursday’s performance.

People fall in love with dolls in Averitt Center's comedic ballet Much like the mad inventor in the play, the Statesboro Youth Ballet will be bringing the ballet "Coppélia" to life the weekend of March 27–29, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.

The show will be held at the Emma Kelly Theatre in the Averitt Center for the Arts, and tickets are $16 for members, $18 for general admission and $10 for youth.

One of the funniest ballets ever produced, "Coppélia" tells the story of a mad inventor who has created a life-size dancing doll. Things start going awry when Franz, who is supposed to be in love with Swanhilde, becomes infatuated with Coppélia, not knowing she is a doll. And now for something completely different We have spent most of our time over the last few weeks focused on Georgia Southern men’s basketball’s run to the Sun Belt championship game, but there has been no shortage of other news throughout Eagle Nation.

Women’s basketball failed Alex to qualify for the Sun Belt Conference tournament and suffered through a 15-game losing streak that finally was snapped in the season’s final game at Georgia State. The seasonending win was not enough, however, to save the job of head coach Chris Vozab.

Vozab was let go after three seasons at Georgia Southern, where she compiled a 23-68 record. This season, the Eagles were 5-24 overall and 2-18 in their inaugural season in the Sun Belt

Conference. A search for a new women’s basketball coach is underway.

Georgia Southern baseball has been a Jekyll-and-Hyde story so far. The Eagles swept three (Bethune Cookman, UGA and Appalachian State) of their first four weekend Brown series. In fact, Southern is 14-4 in weekend games this season, but the Eagles are 0-7 in mid-week games.

Evan Challenger is the ace of the pitching staff and has been spectacular so far this season. In his six starts, Challenger is 2-0 with a 1.02 ERA. He has struck out 27 batters and walked only nine, and opponents are batting just .190 against him. He has only allowed four earned runs in 35.1 innings pitched.

This past weekend (March 20–22), Southern welcomed Arkansas State to town. Friday night was a pitcher’s duel. Challenger started for the Eagles and went 7 2/3 innings, giving up one unearned run and five hits. He struck out seven and did not walk anybody.

However, the only run support he got came in the form of Chase Griffin's leadoff home run in the bottom of the second. A passed ball in the seventh inning allowed the Red Wolves to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Arkansas State finally got to the Georgia Southern bullpen in the top of the 13th inning, and the Red Wolves took the first game 3-1.

Games 2 and 3 were both played Saturday, and there was more free baseball at J.I. Clements Stadium as the

first game of the doubleheader went to extra innings. Ryan Cleveland’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th gave the Eagles the 3-2 win.

Southern took the rubber game and the series with another dramatic win in March 21's night cap. Tied at two, the Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth en route to a 6-3 victory.

Georgia Southern sits atop the Sun Belt standings with a 6-3 record in conference play. Southern will try to overcome those mid-week game struggles at Kennesaw State Tuesday (24) and will host Jacksonville Wednesday (25). The Eagles travel to Texas State March 27–29 for a three-game set against the Bobcats.

Eagle softball has struggled throughout the first half of its 2015 campaign. Southern has enjoyed a ton of success in softball over the last several years, so its 7-21 record is not something the Eagles are accustomed to.

Georgia Southern University’s Performing Arts Center will host a Broadway stage version of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, the popular MGM movie, on Saturday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m.

Set in Oregon in 1850, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers tells the story of Millie, a young bride living in the 1850s Oregon wilderness.

Concert series bringing big acts to the 'Boro Music festivals in Statesboro have risen and died, come and gone, but a new addition to the entertainment scene is looking to bring organized music events back. Airbound Entertainment, a ‘Boro-born booking and music management company, is kicking off a six-week concert series featuring touring acts from around the region, bringing a few bigger names to Statesboro’s music scene and something a little different for the young adult concert-going crowd.

“People get tired of the same old scene,” said William Bridwell, the man behind the music. As owner, manager and head booking agent at Airbound Entertainment, Bridwell is pretty much a one-man show. He started Airbound Entertainment after a successful gig as a freelancing booking agent for local talents such as Those Cats and Piano.

As he got familiar with Statesboro’s music scene, Bridwell realized that Statesboro had a hole in its entertainment scene that needed filling: Despite being a college town, Statesboro

doesn’t attract many nationally touring, big-name acts.

“Statesboro gets skipped over when these bands come through Georgia. It’s not even on their map,” Bridwell said.

As Bridwell sees it, Statesboro has a unique problem: While it has the numbers in a national act’s target audience — that is, college students and young professionals looking for something to do — the town doesn’t have the venue space for big-name bands to perform in. The town’s primary music spaces are the bars (sorry — “restaurants”), which have fire-marshalled holding capacities in the low hundreds.

In order for a venue the size of Dingus Magee’s to break even after paying for a national act, the venue would have to charge big bucks for concert tickets.

And college students and young professionals can’t — or aren’t willing — to pay huge sums for their music on a regular basis. For the venues, paying for a huge act is too much of a risk when they can do just fine on a normal night with a local artist, particularly because

Statesboro’s young adults are somewhat landlocked when it comes to local recreational options.

However, Airbound Entertainment has zeroed in on Club 125. As one might expect from its name, the venue currently serves as a space to go dance and drink, with DJs providing most of the club music. However, Bridwell said that it can legally hold about 750 people, making it a much more viable space for larger acts to perform in.

Additionally, Club 125 has the kind of stage and sound equipment that can accommodate quality performances.

Bridwell thinks it could be a great local venue for live music, even though it has not been used for that purpose much before.

With a venue that can handle the kind of music acts he wants to bring in, Bridwell has booked six regionally touring acts of diverse backgrounds for the concert series. Kicking off the series on March 26 will be a rock trio out of Hilton Head, The Steppin Stones, to be followed by the Southern alt-rock band Atlas Road Crew on April 2. April 9 will see the return of DJ Archnemesis, and the series will wrap up in the following weeks with Dank (formerly Dank Sinatra), Jimmy Hendrix tribute artist

Gimme Hendrix and the Ryan Kinder Band, a country act. And a few local acts will be sharing the spotlight: Piano., DJ Animosity, The Orange Constant and Nate Kenyon are all scheduled as opening acts throughout the series.

“I’ve seen that people have kind of gotten bored with the nightlife and what there is to do — and not to do — around here,” Bridwell said. “The thought I had when I started Airbound was ‘Let’s take the great talent we have here out to the world, and let’s bring the great talent out in the world to Statesboro.’ Because there are some great musicians here.”

The concert series is getting some help from local sponsors Eagle Creek Brewing Co. and The Forum, and from Atlanta’s CounterPoint Music Festival, which will be giving away two weekend passes — valued at $175 a pass — to its summer concert blowout at each one of the series’ weekly shows.

“It was hectic, and it was cool,” drummer Patrick Drohan said. “And I think it really kept us on our creative toes.”

With three different cities of distinct musical flavors and the guiding mentorship of three different producing musicians, Halfway to Hopkins offers a comprehensive sampling of Southern rock. But make no mistake: The sound is all their own. Together, the six musicians of Atlas Road Crew create a powerful, driving sound that hooks listeners in and takes them on the road with the band.

While the band works as a collaborative team on their songs, Drohan and lead vocalist Taylor Nicholson share much of the task of writing lyrics. They draw their inspiration from their common experiences as young guys touring with their best

friends — an experience that can be wildly fun and intensely gratifying, but also tiring and surprisingly lonely at times. Many of the lyrics in Halfway to Hopkins reference the bittersweet joys and difficulties of life on the road, creating a picture of constant motion. It’s perfect road trip music, slightly nostalgic but, in the end, hopeful and optimistic.

Well, a little less than three weeks is all you have left to create your work for the 2015 Statesboro Film Festival. The final deadline for submitting a film is 5 p.m. Friday, April 10.

That gives you enough time to put together or finish production of a film that could earn you recognition as the Best Film winner.

And the Best Film at the 2015 Festival will earn the director $500 cash, as well.

The Statesboro Herald and the Averitt Center for the Arts are teaming up again for the seventh annual festival to find and honor the best locally made films. It is scheduled for 7 p.m.,

Friday, April 17, at the Averitt Center in downtown Statesboro.

Also, voting for your favorite film will begin shortly after the deadline.

All approved films will be available at statesborofilmfestival.com to view and vote on. People can vote up to 10 times per day from a single URL address.

Voting will begin April 12 and be open through midnight April 16.

Vote totals will not be shown, so the winner can be revealed on the evening

of of the film festival.

Like the past five years, the festival offers everyone a chance to do what Hollywood does: Make your own film.

Event coordinator Matt Bankhead, video producer for statesboroherald. com and the lead producer for the daily Studio Statesboro vodcast and the Statesboro Herald Report, encourages aspiring filmmakers to go ahead and finish that film.

"We received several of our best films the last few days before deadline in the past years," he said.

There are a few basic submission rules for the festival. All films can be

called “unbelievable.” They are gaining traction, and even without the help of a record label’s advertising department they are reaching people as far away as the Czech Republic and Australia.

“The mood of the band is really positive right now,” Drohan said, adding, “We’re really grateful for where we are right now and the positive feedback we’re getting from everybody. We’re full of ambition right now.”

Atlas Road Crew will be hitting the stage at Club 125 April 2 at 10 p.m.

Fresh off their hometown album release party, Columbia-based rock ‘n’ roll group Atlas Road Crew will be returning to Statesboro April 2 for the second installment of the Airbound Entertainment concert series, with their brand spankin’ new album in tow.

Their newly released first album was produced piecemeal, with three different producers in three different studios in three different cities.

The experience gave them a crosssection of several different recording processes, between Rick Beato’s (of Needtobreathe and Shinedown fame) downtown Atlanta studio; Cory Plaugh’s home studio in Columbia, South Carolina; and Charleston with Jump Little Children’s Jay Clifford, where they recorded bits of their songs in a traditional studio and in Clifford’s smaller, personal studio. Piano.'s new EP showcases 'devilishly heartbreaking blues' Piano. was created last August with the intent of covering songs by The Black Keys and The White Stripes, but as the band progressed into its own entity, the members have dropped the whole cover-band charade. They’re creating a buzz all around Georgia, and last month they released their first EP of original songs entitled “Tiny Bullet Choir.”

Piano. is comprised of musicians Michael Kerr of Francis Marion and the Crocodiles, Scott Underwood of Those Cats and Matt Litt, also of Francis Marion. Juggling one band each in addition to their day jobs was challenging enough, so starting a second project was not something the members took lightly. They are extremely dedicated to the music they create.

“It’s not like we were like, ‘Oh hey, let’s just start a band in our garage.’

We have all played in various bands throughout the years, so this wasn’t something we were new to,” said guitarist Kerr.

But while the artists of Piano. are serious about their music, their laidback approach to the creative process comes down to feeling out what comes

“We were overlaying vocals and I made a comment saying, ‘It sounds like a tiny boy choir,’” said Underwood,

receivable minimalist quality that is cohesive with the band’s overall vibe.

With all three members contributing to vocals, they are able to add a variety of vocal construction and bring a hauntingly eerie addition to their blues guitar riffs, as in their song “Friend of a Friend.”

Along with the release of their first EP, the three-piece has shared a music video of their first single “Don’t Talk to Me,” which Litt wrote when he was 16. The video also goes along with the vibe of just letting it flow, considering it is a compilation of videos shot during the recording of “Tiny Bullet Choir.”

This video can be found on the band’s Facebook page as well as Airbound Entertainment’s YouTube channel.

Piano. combines its members varied musical interests to create a unique, lo-fi bluesy tone. To get this vintage sound, the members first recorded into an analog tape.

“Anything analog captures a feeling and an energy that is easily transferred to listeners,” said Kerr.

“Tiny Bullet Choir” will be released digitally on iTunes, Spotify and other music sites in the coming weeks, but can be heard live April 2 at Club 125. In addition to their original tracks, Paino. will still throw a few cover songs into the mix — nothing contemporary, but songs from bands that have given the members musical inspiration.
