What's next for MMA superstar Rousey? Ever since entering the MMA scene, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey has dominated each of her opponents with some of the best judo the sport has seen since the days of Fedor Emelianenko, with impressive jiujitsu to cap it off. She’s won all of her fights with an armbar Brett submission except for her last two, which ended in TKO and KO. Miesha “Cupcake” Tate was Rousey's only competitor to take her out of the first round. Ronda only seems to be getting better every time she fights. After blowing up in the MMA community she’s gone on to Hollywood to make a few movies, so she doesn’t seem to be slowing down. So what’s next for the women’s MMA superstar? She seems to be eyeing two options at the moment. Bethe Correia has defeated two of Rousey’s training partners — a group known as “The Four Horsewomen” — and holds a 9-0 fight record. Correia has expressed her interest in taking out Rousey and Rousey has returned the notion. This fight could happen in Correia’s home turf of Brazil, which Rousey welcomes, saying she “think[s] it

would be an amazing event and would love to be a part of it.” Rousey’s second option right now is participating in Metamoris, a Brazilian jiujitsu promotion where athletes compete in 20-minute submission-only matches. She says she would love to compete in Law the next Metamoris, but only if they would pay her the same amount she makes for a UFC fight. In addition, the UFC have their own plans in mind. They’re looking to sign Gina Carano, former Strikeforce Women’s Lightweight Champion turned Hollywood actress, for an immediate title shot against Rousey, which I would absolutely love to see — not to mention the huge amount of money the UFC could make off such an event. Whichever way Ronda Rousey decides to go, I look forward to watching her compete in any arena because she always puts on a show. Who would you like to see her fight next? Some new research shows millennials are making a lot of mistakes when it comes to credit. According to Bankrate.com, 63 percent of people ages 18-29 don’t have a credit card at all, which can be attributed in part to the decline of credit card dependence overall, but also because recent legislation has made it more difficult for people younger than 21 to get credit cards. However, some people say they just don’t want the burden of debt. In some ways that could be a good thing, but Intermountain Credit Advocates President Ike Ikeme says people can’t avoid credit completely. He says, “A ghost [credit] profile might be just as bad as bad credit because it’s still not getting you any lending.” Ikeme believes the biggest problem is that millennials have not been properly educated about credit. For instance, he says a lot of people think a credit score is mostly based on how well someone pays their credit card balances. He explains, “It’s only a fraction of your score. There is also the diversity of your credit. You want to make sure you have different forms of credit on there, like installment loans or mortgages.” Take, for example, student loans. Ikeme says a lot of young people take on student loans early in their aca-

demic career, but many of these students don’t finish college and have a

credit cards," Ikeme says. "That amount is what you want to make sure is under 30 percent [of your credit limit], or if you can do it appropriately, best at one percent.” But Ikeme says many millennials also have one big problem they need to overcome. If they’ve missed a few credit card payments, they tend to give up on making payments altogether. “People who feel their credit might be bad, or it’s not where it needs to be, they don’t want to look at it,” Ikeme says. He says credit can be repaired, even after major problems.w credit tips for college students

mountain of debt left over. He recommends students hold off on taking on that debt until they’re closer to graduation and more motivated to finish. “Try and push that debt toward the latter half of your education where there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Ikeme says. Plus, some of the tricks younger people were taught to build up a good credit score might not work. Many people may have been told that purchasing a small item on credit, then immediately paying off their balance would lead them to a good credit score. Ikeme says that’s not true. “That amount that shows at the end of the billing cycle is what’s reported to the bureaus for most

Let's be real: for all the perks that come with adulthood, some of this crap is complicated and overwhelming — like understanding how credit works. Here are a few tips for building decent credit while you're young, as suggested on various different credit card sites: 1. Have your parents cosign on a card with you. "But I'm INDEPENDENT!" I hear you rage. Well, yes. But this is a good beginner step when it comes to a credit card. It means someone older and more knowledgable has access to your account when something screwy happens, and that someone can help you avoid overspending or getting in over your head. 2. Pick a few consistent monthly expenses to put on your card. Make purchases you were already going to make work for you. Gas and grocery bills are great candidates for regular credit-paid expenses. 3. Pay that sucker off ASAP. It's best to go ahead and pay your credit card balance completely at the end of every billing cycle. Not only does it show that you're responsible to someone looking at your credit score, but it keeps you from having to pay interest fees. Student loan debt is bad enough without throwing credit card debt in there too.

positives. Southern averaged almost 6.5 yards per rush and tallied 335 yards on the ground against what was a pretty doggone solid defense. The Eagles were only penalized once and the defense forced 8 punts and two USA turnovers. I guess that’s a pretty good night of

work. Tattler Game Ball: The game ball has to go to Matt Breida. What a season this guy is having. Breida carried the ball 21 times Saturday for 187 yards and two touchdowns. On the season, he has 50 carries for 455 yards and 7 touchdowns. He’s averaging 9.1 yards per carry and 113.5 yards per game. The Eagles have to put that win behind them quickly. It’s App State week, and it’s a short week as the Mountaineers come to town Thursday night. It’s fitting that Georgia Southern plays a Thursday-night home game the week of the 25th anniversary of

the Hugo Bowl. Throw in the fact that it’s Appalachian State coming to town for a nationally televised game, and this just got really fun. For anyone who has been around Georgia Southern for any period of time, App State needs no introduction. But for you newcomers, this is one bitter rivalry. The first time these two teams met in the modern era was in 1987 at the national quarterfinals, when App State won 19-0 on an icy field in Boone, North Carolina. Georgia Southern joined the Southern Conference in 1993, and it seems every game these two programs have played since then has had conference and national title implications. App leads the all-time series 16-12-1. Recently, the Mountaineers have really gotten the better of the Eagles. six meetings. In fact, since the Eagles' 54-7 blowout win in 2004, Georgia Southern is just 2-7 against Appalachian. It’s time to turn that around. App comes to Paulson at 1-2 on the 2014 season. Their win was at home over Campbell by a score of 66-0. The Mountaineers’ two losses were on the road at Michigan (52-14) in week one and this past Saturday at Southern Miss (21-20). App scored at USM with six seconds on the clock, but the extra point was blocked to send ASU home with a one-point loss. As electric as the home opener was against an opponent Eagle fans really couldn’t get excited about, Paulson Stadium should be absolutely rocking Thursday night. Eagle Nation, we owe these guys. Get there early, pack Our House in a sea of blue and show the entire country how we roll at Georgia Southern. Tattler Prediction: Paulson is louder than it has ever been, the Eagles come out fired up and punch App in the mouth early and often, and a weekend-long celebration begins sometime around the middle of the third quarter. Georgia Southern got its first win over an FBS team as an FBS team and opened up Sun Belt conference play with a 28-6 win over South Alabama Saturday night. The Eagles have now evened up their overall record at 2-2 and sit 1-0 in the conAlex ference. Maybe I’m just nitpicking, but Southern didn’t exactly put together a perfect game. Sure, it was never really in doubt and the Eagles rolled up 420 yards of offense, and yes, I will always take a three-touchdown win over a conference opponent. But it was a little sloppy. Georgia Southern put the ball on the ground too many times but somehow got out of there with only two turnovers. And if the Jaguars’ receivers hadn’t been suffering from a bad case of the drops, the game would have likely been much closer. But in the end the Eagles won by 22 points, so I will stop with the negativity. Let’s look at some

You've got espionage GSU alum's first novel deals with sexism, terrorists and technology For the last nine months, Nathan Goodman has been leading a double life. By day, he’s a mild-mannered senior project manager at a technology company, a husband and a father of two. But his spare time has been spent dipping into a world of terrorism, espionage and government conspiracy — a world, by the way, he created himself. A Georgia Southern graduate of 1989 and a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity on campus, Goodman had never been the kind of student who harbored dreams of writing a novel. Nevertheless, his first novel, The Fourteenth Protocol, is currently enjoying its first month of publication. “I don’t think it’s [being a writer] always been in me,” Goodman said. “I just never understood that I could do it too.” In Goodman’s words, The Fourteenth Protocol is “an FBI terrorist thriller with a very strong female lead.” That would be Jana Baker, a tough young agent struggling to prove herself against

sexism in her male-dominated CIA unit. In the midst of competing with her closed-minded coworkers, Jana uncovers a government conspiracy between a terror cell and the CIA itself. As Goodman describes it, the CIA in his book has adopted a tactic similar to the Drug Enforcement Agency’s strategy for breaking up drug rings: making drug buys and working its way up the ladder of the organization to bust the kingpins at the top. In taking this approach to take down a terror cell, the CIA of Goodman’s book ends up funding terrorists who use the money against American troops and civilians. Inspired by Stephen King’s advice in On Writing that suggests an author ought to use his own work as a backdrop for the story, Goodman drew on his experience working with email software to embed the evidence of the government conspiracy in an email server. That's where his second protagonist comes in. Balancing out Jana is Cade

‘You can get through this. You can be looked at as an equal,’” Goodman said. As a novelist, Goodman was a self-starter in every sense. Though he’d never written anything seriously before, he made the commitment to write 15 minutes every day for nine months. Once the book was finished, he chose to self-publish rather than take on the financial commitments and extended publication timeline that come with traditional publishing. This way, also, he gets to keep the rights to the story — and any pending sequels, of which Goodman said there will definitely be at least one. The book has been out for less than a month and can be purchased in both ebook and paperback formats. Copies are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and iTunes, in addition to his author website NathanAGoodman. com, where signed copies of the book are available for purchase. So far response for the book has been positive, but it hasn’t been very wide. When an author self-publishes he takes on all of the responsibility of marketing, and competing with the 400,000 books published annually is an uphill battle. However, Goodman hopes the book will catch on so the story can spread what he believes is a positive message. “It’s bigger than just a thriller,” Goodman said. “I want you to walk away thinking, ‘Man, I can do this. I can do something.’ ”w

Nathan Goodman, a GSU graduate of '89, drew on his experiences working in a technology company as the backdrop for his new novel, "The Fourteenth Protocol."

Williams, who — aside from his intelligence and familiarity with the email system — is mostly unexceptional but becomes one of the story’s unlikely heroes. “He’s never been in any of these situations, just like most of us would never have been faced with this,” Goodman said. “He’s just this email server guy, and all the sudden he happens to be working in the place where the big cover-up has started. And so he’s asked to spy, and we’re talking about spying against terrorists. And suddenly his life is on the line.” As research for the book, Goodman ran ideas by friends of his who worked in federal law enforcement to confirm basic titles and military language. However, he’s open about the fact that — like many military thrillers — The Fourteenth Protocol “Hollywood-izes” certain elements to up the stakes for the characters. Goodman said he took liberties with certain military procedures not only because it made for a more action-packed read, but also because it gave his female lead, Jana, more autonomy. “To try and prove herself in a place like that, it’s quite a good extreme compared to just the average person working in a business office,” Goodman said. “She still has to prove herself, but this is on a whole different level, and if she can prove herself on this level, she’s really accomplished something.” As the father of two daughters, Goodman had good reason to write a strong female character. Knowing that his girls would read the book had a big influence in the direction the story took, and his 12-year-old daughter was his first reader for any draft. He incorporated traits from both of his daughters into the characters — particularly Jana, so they could see themselves in the story as a character they could look up to. “I want them to identify with this character so they understand,

"Long-held memories and the passage of days" The Averitt Center showcases natural wonder in its latest art exhibit Pairing artists into a single show is often a tall order. Finding conceptual and formal similarities between different art forms so that a conversation ensues, without conflict, is a rare feat. But the Averitt Center for the Arts' new show delivers on all counts. In paintings and pine needle sculptures, Lawrence B. Smith and Stephanie Tames present us with poetic representations of nature as

subject and medium. Smith applies thin layers of waterbased media to paper, panels or canvas, building rich layers of luminous color depicting the natural environment. Mountains, water, trees and, more recently, the American West make up his subjects, meant to be slowly contemplated and consumed. A particular favorite, perhaps for its

Smith captures the radiant colors of sand and stone against a robin's-egg blue sky that feels far more expansive than the modest scale would suggest. This work requires as much patient contemplation from the viewer as it did from the artist. Smith states, "[E]very season has its special moments; you just need to stop and look." The detail throughout his collection is stunning, suggesting the rustle of leaves and gurgling of a brook; for those who appreciate fine craft, his work will be quite satisfying. In contrast to Smith’s representational painting we are offered the twisting, coiling basket sculptures of Stephanie Tames. A change in geography from the mountains to our coastal plains introduced this traditional basket weaver to the long leaf pine needle and its aesthetic possibilities. A process developed by the indigenous people of the coastal plain region, the coiling of fibers into utilitarian vessels is a venerable craft. Tames removes the utilitarian aspect, leaving only the relationship of artist to process and allowing abstract form to take over without losing the tether to a historical practice. Far from holding the eggs and potatoes of her previous works,

these new forms contain the intangible elements of time and experience and suggest we ponder the winding, intertwined nature of life. In particular, a work named Forever twists into itself in an infinite loop of waxed threads, pine needles and recycled fabric, like a snake eating its own tail. Of her art, Tames states that weaving is “a metaphor for how we shape and are shaped by the different threads of our lives, and our natural surroundings.” What really bonds these two artists is the aspect of time, in both theme and process. One cannot help but imagine the solitary acts of the artists in their studios, one slowly inserting needles into a coil, the other focused on his panel, applying tiny dots of olive green to an overhanging tree. In each case we are treated to the product of hundreds of hours of focused work that will transport you to a distant vista, pondering longheld memories and the passage of days.w
