Torre exposes Brooklet background in 'erotic thriller' Successful, hybrid-published erotic romance author Alessandra Torre, or A.R. Torre, for her latest book, The Girl in 6E, has set bits of it in Brooklet, with a character from Statesboro. Released July 8 by the Hachette Book Group under its Redhook imprint, it is her first thriller and first book in hardcover. Now a resident of Destin, Florida, Torre did some growing up in Bulloch County, but casual acquaintances may not realize it. Alessandra Torre, you see, is the pen name of Carnella Trimble, a 2002 graduate of Southeast Bulloch High School, where she ran track and was the 2001 homecoming queen. But from here out, she will be called Torre, the name associated with her books. “I never wrote until about 2½ years ago when I sat down to write my first book,” Torre said in a phone interview. “That was the first time I ever did any writing other than creative writing courses in high school and college.” After SEB, she went to Florida State University, where she received a degree in hospitality and business administration. She worked in banking for two years and then did office work for a developer before her husband sold his real estate business and their new financial security allowed her to quit her job. Searching for a new direction, she found herself reading rabidly and was impressed by author E.L. James and Fifty Shades of Grey, Torre said. Her husband suggested she try writing a book. Another title she picked up at the time was Stephen King’s On Writing. She was about halfway through that book when she became convinced she could write one. “So I sat down and just started writing and, in six weeks, I wrote my first novel and that was Blindfolded Innocence, and that book exploded,” Torre said. Self-published in July 2012 as a Kindle e-book, Blindfolded Innocence

quickly hit the Amazon Top 20. It was selling about 3,000 copies a day, which led to a bidding war among publishers, Torre said. This resulted in a two-book deal with Harlequin, including Blindfolded Innocence, published in paperback that fall, and what turned out to be a sequel, Masked Innocence. Dissatisfied with the months it took for the second book to reach print, Torre said, she self-published the third book of the trilogy, End of the Innocence without seeking a print deal. She self-published two more books, Sex Love Repeat and The Dumont Diaries. So Torre is a “hybrid author,” to use a trendy term. She both self-publishes through electronic formats and makes deals with traditional publishing houses for print editions. “But in my heart, I’ll always consider myself what they call an indie, which is an independent self-publisher,” Torre said. “I’d prefer self-publishing, as far as having complete control, but traditional publishing can take me much further.” Three of her books have made the USA Today’s Best-Selling Books, which lists 150 top books each week. Blindfolded Innocence hit No. 1 for two weeks on a list specific to erotica. If that fact and some of the titles are not strong enough hints, be warned, Torre’s books contain explicit descriptions of sex, and she has a no-wordsbarred style. The Girl in 6E is positioned as a departure from her previous five books. Besides being published in hardcover, it shifts the pen name from Alessandra to A.R., at the publisher’s initiative, to emphasize that it is a thriller, not a romance. “You want a thriller to be released in hardcover in the summer, in June or July,” Torre said, indicating that this is a big deal for her. Both the Harlequin and Hachette deals have brought her six-figure returns, she reports. The Hachette

deal also includes a second book beyond The Girl in 6E. Despite the shift in emphasis, Torre acknowledged that the book can be classified as “an erotic thriller.” It describes very little actual human contact, but an abundance of cybersex between adults. The central character, Deanna Madden, has experienced psychological trauma and knows she has a problem. “She has this obsessive desire to kill people,” Torre put it. So Deanna SPECIAL TO CONNECT sequesters Alessandra Torre's book, "The Girl in 6E," features the kidnapherself in ping of a girl from Brooklet as a major event in the plot, and the only apartment 6E, person who can save her is a "cam girl" with homicidal impulses. with someone hired to keep her locked covers that one of her clients has in most of the time. The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) keeps reminding me how bad of a comission it really is. Their biggest failure is to address the issue of judging and refereeing in the sport of MMA (mixed martial arts). You have referees who make horrible calls time and time again and somehow keep their jobs. The judging is even worse: it never fails that if a fight ends up going the distance and the judges have to render a decision, nine times out of 10 they get it wrong. The problem is that this commission was set up during the golden age of boxing and is ill-suited to regulate a sport that is so different. Boxing is a one-dimensional scoring match: the fights stay on the feet and the judges count effective punches and ring control. MMA is completely different. The fight can end up staying on the feet for three rounds or on the ground or anywhere in between. The judges have absolutely no idea how to score this. They haven’t been prepared for this sport and should hold authority over something they do not understand. Recently they banned the use of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) for all athletes, with pretty much every other fighting commission around the world following suit immediately afterward. This is one of the

commission's many blunders that have been going on for some time now. Of course, the ban was instituted because many fighters were abusing it to get an edge over their opponents. Fighters such as Allistair Overeem, Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva were some of the biggest names at the forefront of the controversy. Here lies the problem, though: some people actually need TRT for legitimate medical purposes. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva may have his career ended because he needs TRT to treat a rare disorder called acromegaly, which causes a tumor on the pituitary gland. It is the same disorder that afflicted Andre The Giant, and it ended up killing him because he refused to be treated. The NSAC make judgements like this on a case-by-case basis instead of making a sweeping rule that could affect fighter’s livelihoods. They have made ridiculous decisions like this one time and time again, and it’s usually because they don’t understand the issue. The NSAC needs to start taking the sport of MMA more seriously, train their judges and referees and do the job right if they are going to do it at all. The MMA community needs a commission to be a legit sport, but having a commission this hopeless hurts the sport more than it helps it.w

4 Deseret News

'The Jedi Doth Return' Ian Doescher finished his epic retelling of the Star Wars series in Shakespearean style with The Jedi Doth Return, which covers the events of the Return of the Jedi film. The story moves from Jabba’s palace to Dagobah, to the rebel fleet, to the moon of Endor, to the Death Star and to the story’s concluding moments. Like in the earlier installments, Doescher accurately turns the Star Wars tale into a Shakespearean epic, showing that there isn’t much difference between George Lucas’ tale and those penned by the English playwright. But The Jedi Doth Return doesn’t take as many risks as its predecessor, The Empire Striketh Back, does. While the previous book worked well to give Yoda a new language style and offered some interesting in-depth emotions for characters who weren’t

so deep in the films, The Jedi Doth Return is short, to the point and rarely makes an attempt to change the characters. Though the Ewoks have an interesting language component, the book otherwise follows the movie’s pace and doesn’t introduce anything new. It is more of just a completion of the trilogy than it is a new read. Readers will be drawn to it because it’s the end of the story, the end of a trilogy — not because it’s going to offer anything new. Despite this flaw, The Jedi Doth Return follows the movie very well and even offers a glimpse into what might be coming next. It doesn’t seem as though it's the end for Doescher’s Shakespearean interpretation of Star Wars. In fact, Doescher hints that this may just be the beginning.w

Know thy enemy, part 3 In college sports, the best rivalries are border wars (i.e., Ohio State/ Michigan, Georgia/Florida, Texas/ Oklahoma) or in-state rivalries (i.e., Auburn/Alabama, Duke/North Carolina, Florida State/Miami). Georgia Southern has four readymade Sun Belt rivalries that fit those two categories. These battles should be fun over the next several years.

Appalachian State University; Boone, North Carolina

Enrollment: 15,009 Nickname: Jaguars

Enrollment: 17,589 Nickname: Mountaineers

South Alabama began playing football in 2009 and joined FBS in 2011. During that time, USA was 31-21 — not bad for a program just getting off the ground. Last season, the Jaguars finished 6-6, but ended the season winners of their final three games including a 30-8 win over conference champion UL Lafayette. South Alabama also has a traditionally strong baseball program. The Jaguars have made 25 NCAA postseason appearances and 14 Sun Belt Conference championships. USA has had some success on the hardwood as well: its men’s basketball team has made eight NCAA tournament appearances, the last one in 2008. USA has also been invited to the NIT

Appalachian State and Georgia Southern have been conference rivals since Southern joined the SoCon in 1993, so Eagle Nation is obviously very familiar with App State. With almost nothing else staying the same when it comes to Georgia Southern football, it will be nice to have a familiar rival on the schedule for years to come. New rivalries will be born for both programs in a new conference, but there’s no doubt this one is going to continue to be circled on both teams’ calendars every year as soon as the schedules are released. The Mountaineers are most known by Georgia Southern folks for the football rivalry, but App State has a very good athletics program across the board. Since 1977, Appalachian has won the Commissioner’s Cup—the

Southern Conference award for best overall men’s athletics program—a staggering 34 out of 37 years. The Germann Cup for best women’s program began in 1986 and App State brought it home 10 times. As much as Georgia Southern dislikes App State, you have to respect that kind of success. Now, let’s get back to hating them.

Troy University; Troy, Alabama Enrollment: 27,270 Nickname: Trojans Troy has a winning football tradition that has crossed paths with Georgia Southern a few times over the years. In the modern era, the two programs have met five times with the Eagles holding a 3-2 advantage. The most recent meeting was a 24-21 Georgia Southern win in the first round of the 1995 I-AA playoffs. Troy won the 1984 and 1987 Division II National Championships and moved to Division I-AA in 1991. The Trojans transitioned into FBS and the Sun Belt Conference in 2004. Since moving to the FBS, Troy has made five bowl appearances, winning the 2006 and 2010 New Orleans Bowls. Troy also has three men’s golf, three women’s golf and two baseball Division II national titles. Because of their history on the field and proximity to

each other, I can see Troy and Georgia Southern becoming a good conference rivalry in all sports.

Georgia State University; Atlanta, Georgia Enrollment: 32,000 Nickname: Panthers In 2014, Georgia Southern and Georgia State will begin playing each other every year in every sport. This is going to be fun. These in-state rivals were members of the old TAAC (now known as the Atlantic Sun) in the 1980s. The rivalry was most heated on the men’s basketball court, where Georgia Southern leads the all-time series 32-14. State did not have football until 2010, and as you probably know, that venture has not gone well so far. The Panthers went 6-5 in their inaugural season. Since then, they have posted a combined record of 4-30. To be fair, the Panthers jumped into the best conference in FCS (CAA) in 2012 and then immediately made the move to the Sun Belt. It will be interesting to see how this program fares over the next few years now that it has had time to graduate its first signing class and bring in a new coaching staff. Georgia Southern travels to the Georgia Dome for the first-ever meeting between Southern and State on October 25. Get your popcorn ready.w

Costumed characters walk outside of the convention center on day 1 of the 2014 Comic-Con International Convention held Thursday, July 24, 2014 in San Diego.

The Associated Press

Women of Comic-Con protest harassment SAN DIEGO — Geeks for CONsent, founded by three women from Philadelphia, gathered nearly 2,600 signatures on an online petition supporting a formal anti-harassment policy at this weekend's Comic-Con. Conventioneers told Geeks for CONsent they had been groped, followed and unwillingly photographed during the four-day confab. Groping, cat-calling and other forms of sexual harassment are a larger social issue, not just a Comic-Con problem. And many comics and movies still portray women as damsels in distress. But Geeks for CONsent says things are amplified at the festival, where fantasy

plays such a large role. "It's a separate, more specific issue within the convention space," said Rochelle Keyhan, 29, director of Geeks for CONsent. "It's very much connected (to the larger problem) and it's the same phenomena, but manifesting a little more sexually vulgar in the comic space." "Comic-Con has an explicit Code of Conduct that addresses harassing and offensive behavior," said Comic-Con International in a statement on Sunday to The Associated Press. "This Code of Conduct is made available online as well as on page two of the Events Guide that is given to each attendee."

Associated Press Earlier, Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer told the Los Angeles Times that "anyone being made to feel uncomfortable at our show is obviously a concern for us." He said additional security was in place this year, including an increased presence by San Diego Police. Costuming, or cosplay, is a big part of the popular convention, with male and female fans dressing as their favorite characters, regardless of gender. A man might wear a Wonder

Woman outfit, and a woman could dress as Wolverine. Keyhan and her colleagues — all in costume — carried signs and passed out temporary tattoos during the convention that read, "Cosplay does not equal consent." In addition to Comic-Con's existing Code of Conduct, Geeks for CONsent wants the 45-year-old convention to adopt a clearly stated policy and says staff members should to be trained to handle sexual harassment complaints.w

Excellent beta release for hybrid 'Destiny' Probably one of the biggest titles to be released this year, “Destiny” had gamers glued to their consoles during its beta release. Developer Bungie and publisher Activision are no strangers to huge, successful Tim video games and “Destiny” looks to be just that. The beta will officially be released on September 9 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. “Destiny” is a game set seven hundred years into the future of a post-apocalyptic world. After a period of peace, exploration and technological advancement known as the Golden Age, mankind was almost totally wiped out by an evil force. The player assumes the role of one of the last defenders of the human race: a Guardian of the City. Guardians are divided into three

different races: Humans, Awoken and Exo. Players also have to choose a class to go alongside their race. The Titan class favors heavy weapons and strong melee attacks. Hunters are a reconnaissance-based class Webb meant to be similar to bounty hunters. The final class, Warlocks, is a wizard-based class similar to Jedi which possesses special powers combined with weapons. Each player is accompanied by a robot A.I., voiced by Peter Dinklage, called a Ghost. “Destiny,” like many games now, is a hybrid of several genres and can’t be limited to just one. The game has firstperson shooter affinities as well as RPG (roleplaying game) and MMO (massively multiplayer online) elements. Players will find themselves in a world with other online players with whom they can team up at the click of a button. Players can,

Staring at screen raises guilty feelings, study finds While millions of people choose relaxing in front of the TV, computer or smartphone screen after a long day at work, a new study finds that might cause the opposite feeling. A European study published this week in the Journal of Communication screened 471 subjects about how they felt at the end of their work day and what media they engaged with. As The Independent reported, participants who felt especially tired resorted to using media and reported that they felt they'd procrastinated more important tasks. This led them to feel like failures, which resulted in further anxiety. The study confirms what some have urged all along: Technology

might make some things easier, but too much engagement with devices might be harmful. Take comedienne Charlene deGuzman, whose video titled "I forgot my phone," went viral this year. In it, deGuzman is put in a variety of social situations that are ruined by the people around her being too absorbed in their devices. Many sites, like Upworthy, said deGuzman shed a light on a rising social issue nearly everyone is guilty of. The Huffington Post urged readers earlier this year to put down their smartphones and talk to strangers, citing a book that argued that people who were socially engaged were happier than people who texted in solitude. Writer Jessi Hemple quit social

media in 2013 for a series of Fortune articles, arguing that Americans simply need to unplug until they can figure out the what's healthy and what's not. "I don’t remember what my life was like before I had a profile pic. Much as with any other technology, we need to figure out how to integrate social services into our lives," Hemple wrote. "Remember when we all got cell phones in the mid-90s? For several years, we let them ring in restaurants and movie theaters and answered them mid-conversation before we developed a set of cultural norms around how to use them. This set of culture norms is harder to pin down with social services since the services themselves are evolving so quickly."w

Cuddle parties: are they healthy?

‘In a country that seems to be becoming increasingly isolated, cuddling may be a healthy way to deal with the disconnection.’ Jon Fortenbury, The Atlantic

must be at least 18, wear modest pajamas and arrive on time. Before the cuddling begins, the facilitators teach the participants how to ask for permission and how to say no if they need to. During the actual cuddle session, participants ask each other for hugs or back rubs, but no one is forced to cuddle with anyone they don't want to. Not everyone is convinced of the efficacy of a group cuddle. Glenn Wilson, a clinical psychologist, told the Daily Mail that while cuddling and hugging are beneficial, it seems wrong to only use physical touch as a

SPECIAL TO CONNECT To combat loneliness, some people are turning to 'cuddle parties,' where — for a price — they can engage in snuggle time with other isolated people. However, some object that physical contact without emotional connection cheapens the experience. way to evoke a specific, health-related reaction. Jon Fortenbury, a freelance writer, participated in a cuddle party and wrote about his experience in The Atlantic. The point of the exercise was both to engage in some friendly human contact and to learn how to connect in a positive, non-sexual environment. "In a country that seems to be becoming increasingly isolated, cuddling may be a healthy way to deal with the disconnection," Fortenbury said. Others view the group cuddle sessions in a less positive light. "I can’t get over the fact that everyone present was essentially paying for their cuddles, which made the experience a bit depressing," wrote Daily Mail reporter Sophie Morris of her own experience at a cuddle party. Individuals who are touch-deprived have other options as well, including visiting one of several "snuggle houses" around the country. At The Snuggery

in Rochester, New York, a person can pay $60 for an hour of one-on-one cuddling. Clients can also choose an "overnight cuddle" option, which costs $425. While cuddle facilitators and snuggle house owners emphasize the strictly non-sexual nature of the encounters, others are less convinced. "There's no way that (sexual assault) will not happen," Jennifer Zilavy, an assistant city attorney in Madison, Wisconsin, told The Associated Press after Madison officials became suspicious of a proposed snuggle house opening last year. Others are hesitant of cuddle parties because of how little research is available about the actual benefits of touching strangers. Wendy Walsh told Yahoo! Shine that engaging in platonic cuddling can devalue emotionally driven cuddling. “Cuddling should be an integral component of an evolving relationship, not something you can grab on the run,” she said.w

As loneliness becomes a more recognized health risk in the United States, the need for human contact and community has led to the creation of "cuddle parties." But law enforcement suspect that cuddling can be used as a front for illegal sexual activity. And others object to the trend on grounds that physical affection should be saved for those you already have an emotional bond with and that cuddling strangers makes physical touch less meaningful. Recent studies have reported on the danger of being isolated, including a study by the Department of Public Health at University College London, which found that people over age 52 who experienced social isolation were 48 percent more likely to die over the course of the study, all other factors being equal, The Telegraph reported. An article in Forbes discussed the growing problem of loneliness among millennials, who are working more independently and prioritizing personal success over relationships. Just as loneliness and isolation have a negative effect on human health, physical contact has a healing effect. "Stimulating touch receptors under the skin can lower blood pressure and cortisol levels, effectively reducing stress," Matthew Hertenstein, director of the Touch and Emotion Lab at DePauw University, told Huffington Post. One phenomenon that has arisen to combat loneliness is the cuddle party, promoted by a "federally recognized nonprofit educational organization" that is designed to create a fun social experience and teach people how to get the most out of cuddling, according to the Cuddle Party website. Trained facilitators host events around the United States and Canada. Other, similar organizations have opened in the United Kingdom and Sweden. The cuddle party organization has trained facilitators who host parties in various cities around the United States and Canada. Participants
