The organizers of the Savannah Book Festival recently announced the full roster of authors attending this year’s festival, running Feb. 12–15 at various locations throughout Savannah.

In addition to the previously announced headline authors — bestselling mystery writer Janet Evanovich, humorist and satirist P.J. O’Rourke and the ‘Grand Dame of Gothic Fiction’ Anne Rice with her son, awardwinning novelist Christopher Rice — more than 35 popular and criticallyacclaimed authors will be attending the Savannah Book Festival. Need a fake boyfriend? There's an app for that.

You’ve probably seen this floating around on social media: it’s a service called “Invisible Boyfriend,” and it’s just about as weird — and mildly creepy — as it sounds.

The service previewed in 2013 as “Invisible Girlfriend” (which is still around, gentlemen, in case you’re interested) as a way to throw off people who persistently ask you if you’re seeing anyone, including but not limited to: nosy relatives, clingy exes and interested coworkers who won’t take no for an answer. Now the service has entered its public beta stage, and for $24.99 a month, you can purchase a package that comes with 100 texts, 10 voicemails and a sweet little handwritten note — all from a significant other you can custom-make to your specifications.

Here’s the wild part, though: There are no bots involved in the process. All texts, voicemails and notes come from an actual person.

It’s weird. It’s quirky. It’s so crazy that I absolutely had to try it.

I used a little downtime over the weekend to create an Invisible Boyfriend — picking out a picture, customizing his personality and fabricating a meet-cute story (we bumped into each other in an airport bookstore, had a cup of coffee while waiting for our flights and things just blossomed from there). Within minutes of putting in my credit card information, I had a text from a “fun, adventurous” fellow who

liked animals and books (naturally) and was named “Ben Cumberbatch” (again, naturally).

Over the course of the weekend, I exchanged about half of my allotted texts with “Ben” as I experimented with the service, getting a ridiculous kick every time "Ben Cumberbatch" showed up on my phone. But as I played around with it, it occurred to me that as a cover-up, the service isn't really that good.

It might throw off your grandmother or maiden aunt, but nosy friends or other interested parties will bust your secret fairly quickly.

For one, it quickly became clear that “Ben” and I couldn’t have a coherent conversation. That’s because “Ben,” while not a

robot, is not just one person — he’s several. According to the Washington Post, when you send a text to your Invisible SO, “the message routes through Invisible Boyfriend, where it’s anonymized and assigned to some Amazon Turk or Fivrr freelancer. …

He never sees [your] name or number, and he can’t really have anything like an actual conversation with [you].”

No kidding — Ben’s texts were disjointed and there was obviously no flow to our banter. He would answer the same question twice and with different answers, and five minutes after saying “goodnight” he was texting me

about a dream he had of us walking hand-in-hand through a park (weird).

Additionally (and, as an English major, this really annoyed me) the texts varied in style, grammar and punctuation. Anyone reading the texts could tell they came from different people.

And if that didn't tip someone off, the lack of a digital footprint certainly would. Blogs, business profiles, social media accounts — everyone is plugged in somehow, and a conspicuous absence from the digital sphere is enough to cast some significant doubt on your fake SO. Finally — and this one seems like the most absurdly obvious chink in the armor — it's rather hard to maintain an illusion when the illusion is being advertised all over social media. "Invisible Boyfriend/ Girlfriend" is one of the top autofill options on Google when you type in "invisible," meaning that the service is gaining traction and attention.

How effective is your fake beau going to be when everyone knows how easy it is to get one, and can recognize the telltale signs of a fabricated person?

Again, the service might be able to fool your technologically impaired relatives, who probably won't even deign to look at the screen when you offer to show them text-message evidence. But if you actually need a stand-in SO for nagging friends and persistent office stalkers, you might want to try some other options.w

'Better Call Saul' sparks intrigue in Albuquerque ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico's largest city is back to being featured in another television show more than a year after the end of AMC-TV series Breaking Bad. Better Call Saul premiered Sunday, and city officials hope the prequel to the hit series sparks more interest in Albuquerque after Breaking Bad spawned tours, sales of novelty items and even a political ad during the last election.

More than 100 fans showed up for a premiere Better Call Saul viewing party at an Albuquerque brewery, and more such gatherings are scheduled for the

remainder of the season. One lawyer, Ron Bell, who some speculate the show's main character is loosely based on, has a billboard advertising "Better Call Bell."

Already the city's visitors' bureau has created a website to help tourists find Albuquerque sites from the show.

New Mexico's new Attorney General Hector Balderas even thumbed out a tweet during the show to let its main star, Bob Odenkirk, know that the state's top cop was watching him. "Hey @BetterCallSaul @mrbobodenkirk, know that the Attorney General of New Mexico will be keeping an eye on you this evening," Balderas wrote.

In the point-and-click adventure game "Life is Strange," Maxine Caufield witnesses the murder of a friend and realizes that she can travel back in time to prevent it — although she can't control the ripple effects. and get a question right in class that will change the outcome of the story in the future.

The game does a decent job of capturing the story and setting of adolescents in school. The voice acting is slacking at times, but it’s backed by a great soundtrack. Although you are given the god-like power of rewinding to make the “right choice”, Maxine is still left wondering if she made the correct choice because the rippling effect can still haunt her later on. I'm eager to see how some of my choices play out in later episodes of the game.

Although the game is beautiful and has solid writing, it does come off a bit fragmented and confusing at first.

Tania Armenta, a vice president for the Albuquerque Convention & Visitors Bureau, said interest in Breaking Bad Albuquerque sites has not slowed, and they remain particularly popular with European tourists. City officials expect even more interest with Better Call Saul.

"Definitely loving the buzz," Armenta said. "Most of the buzz we are seeing is positive."

Armenta said the show's creators haven't revealed much, so when Albuquerque sites are shown city officials update the website, visitalbuquerque.org/bettercallsaul.

Reading Maxine's journal in the menu and clicking on interactive items throughout the game will round out the disjointed story, though none of that is necessary to play-through.

Although most choices weren't truly realized in episode one of Life is Strange, the game has an excellent main character with an interesting, engaging story. Even with its minor hindrances, the game really grabbed me into its narrative and has left me eagerly awaiting the release of episode two.w

Eagles break hearts, fall to second in Sun Belt That’s more like it.

Even if it was just for one night, Hanner Fieldhouse was back to its old self. And the Eagles fed off that energy as Georgia Southern beat Georgia State in one of the most anticipated games in Hanner in a long time.

Alex Southern trailed for most of the game, but outscored State 28-15 over the last 11 minutes of the game to win 58-54. The Panthers actually held a nine-point advantage when the Eagles began their comeback.

There’s no question in my mind the crowd played a role in the outcome. The energy level inside Hanner Thursday night was through the roof. When Jake Allsmiller hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles a five-point lead and then Angel Matias threw down a one-handed dunk moments later, the crowd was absolutely deafening. That’s the way it should be for every game.

I firmly believe that Hanner Fieldhouse, when the crowd is doing what it did over the last several minutes of the game Thursday night, gives Georgia Southern as much of a home court advantage as any college basketball program in the country.

The fans are right on top of the court, the ceiling is low and it can get so loud you can’t hear yourself think.

Bring that noise every game and the Eagles will seldom lose at Hanner.

That noise was not brought Saturday night and the Eagles lost.

That’s not to blame the fans for the loss — it’s hard to beat any team who shoots over 52 percent from threepoint land. But we went from 4,325 in attendance on Thursday with much of the crowd standing and cheering for the entire game to about 2,700 mostly sitting and knitting sweaters for most of Saturday’s game. And aside from the whole in-state rivalry thing we had going on Thursday night, Saturday’s game was just as important as first place was on the line again.

The crowd finally got into the game

in the closing minutes of regulation as the Eagles fought back to tie it and send it to overtime. But UL Monroe (16-8, 10-3) was just too much and Southern (16-5, 9-3) fell into second place with a 71-68 overtime loss.

Georgia Southern wraps Brown up this five-game homestand Thursday night when Arkansas State comes to town for Military Appreciation Night. Southern will be on the road at Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday night before returning home for two more next week.

Not to shift gears too early or anything, because basketball is reaching the home stretch of its regular season with huge games left to be played and the conference tournament in New Orleans in March — but baseball season starts this weekend.

I don’t know about you, but with all the excitement of basketball season, baseball has snuck up on me.

Georgia Southern opens its season Friday night as Bethune Cookman comes to town for a three-game weekend series. First-pitch Friday is set for 6 p.m. The Eagles will play 16 of their first 18 games at home and that opening stretch includes opponents like West Virginia, Georgia Tech and Georgia all making trips to Statesboro.

The Eagles will be trying to build on last season’s 40-23 overall record, which included a SoCon tournament championship and a win over Florida State in the NCAA Regional.

Southern eventually fell in the regional semi-final to Alabama to end its season.

It’s a busy time of year in Eagle athletics. You will have plenty of opportunities to take in a ball game over the next few weeks as both basketball and baseball have several home contests during the month of February.

So here’s to basketball finishing strong and baseball getting off to a hot start. This is going to be a fun few weeks.w

FamilyShare/special Ingredients: 1/3 cup butter or margarine 1/4 cup sugar 1 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs 2 8-ounce packages of cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon of almond extract 2 tablespoons Bisquick pancake mix Directions: For graham cracker crust Melt butter. Add sugar and graham cracker. Mix well. Place cupcake papers in muffin tin. Press 1 tablespoon

graham cracker crust in bottom of cupcake cups. If using mini muffin tin press 1 teaspoon graham cracker crust in bottom of cups.

For cream cheese mixture: Beat cream cheese and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time while mixing. Add almond flavoring and Bisquick. Blend until smooth.

Put it all together: Fill cupcake cups with crust. Bake for 10 minutes at 350°. Turn oven down to 300° and bake an additional 10 minutes. Cool completely. Top with cherry pie filling.w

were commonly used among ancient Greeks.

Aphrodisiacs are agents that work on the mind and body to increase sexual desire and arousal. Foods affect the body in different ways and can have a positive impact on how a person feels. Certain foods can help promote feelings of intimacy, increase blood flow and create euphoria.

A Wilde weekend of romantic comedy Two young ladies, both claim undying love for a man named Ernest.

Two men, neither of them named Earnest, each in love with a young lady.

Will either man win his girl? Or will the couples have to remain passionately celibate?

The Importance of Being Earnest has been delighting audiences since 1895, when it first appeared on the London stage. This comedy focuses on characters maintaining fictitious personas in order to escape burdensome social obligations.

The performance is directed by Mical Whitaker and Melinda Roell.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a play both directors have been waiting a long time to produce, and both are excited to see the audience’s reaction to the production.

“I first saw this production while in college at Howard University,” said Whitaker. “It’s been a favorite of mine for a long time. I’ve reached a point in my life where I can direct shows on my ‘Bucket List’ and I’m enjoying that.”

“Mr. Whitaker and I first started talking about co-directing Earnest three or four years ago,” said Roell. “It’s taken a while to clear our schedules so we both had time to devote to the production. I think it’s been worth the wait. This is going to be an extraordinarily good production.”

The team has been working on the

production for nearly a year.

“Mical and I read and reread the show and talked a lot in advance about our vision of the show — things like whether to set it in current time or original period, as well as where we wanted the location to be. We did lots of background work last fall even before auditions were set,” said Roell.

“I am thrilled to be learning so much from Mical. He’s simply one of the most experienced theater people we have around and very generous with his time and knowledge — a great teacher .”

The cast brings together both wellknown actors and some new to the stage, or to Statesboro. For example, many will recognize Sarah Hancock as the director of Statesboro Youth Chorale and a vocal soloist, but Earnest is a straight play, not a musical.

“It’s a brilliant, laugh-out-loud play,” said Hancock, “and Lady Bracknell is role I’ve always wanted to play.”

JD Lane, the Box Office Manager at the Averitt Center, is both excited and nervous about stepping away from his normal behind-the-scenes duties and onto the stage.

“I first read Earnest in an Intro to Theater class, taught by Mr. Whitaker,” he explained. “So it was like coming full circle to audition and actually be cast in the production.”

Daphne and Apollo Cupid gets his diaper in a twist when Apollo says something sharp to him. To get revenge, he shoots Apollo with a golden arrow to make him fall in love with a nymph named Daphne; he then shoots Daphne with an arrow to make her run away. After a long chase, Daphne, fed up that Apollo doesn’t understand that no means no, asks a river god to turn her into a tree.

All because Cupid couldn’t take an insult.

Hades and Persephone Remember the story of “The Rape of Persephone,” where Hades, the god of the underworld, kidnaps the goddess of spring and takes her off to his kingdom?

Yep. Cupid’s fault again.

To make matters worse, Persephone's mother Demeter — aka the goddess of agriculture — threw a complete fit when her daughter went missing. She and Hades had to strike a deal in which Persephone could return to the upper world for half a year and remain in the Underworld for the other half,

Jason and Medea During the quest for the Golden Fleece, Cupid caused the princess Medea to fall in love with the hero Jason so that she would help him capture the famed sheepskin. In the process of helping Jason and fleeing with him back to Greece, she betrayed her father, killed her brother and — after Jason ditched her on the island of Corinth, like a typical Greek hero — murdered Jason’s new bride and the two sons she and Jason had borne together, leaving Jason without heirs.

Everything escalated rather quickly.

Aeneas and Dido Again prompted by his mother Aphrodite, Cupid caused the queen Dido to fall in love with the hero Aeneas and give him resources to help him on his quest to found the city of Rome. When Aeneas left her, she killed herself.

There are plenty of other little snippets of stories in which Cupid is said to be involved, making mischief and laughing at the outcomes. The moral of the story: Don’t trust him. He may be the god of love, but he’s kind of a little s***.w
