woman and the man in the mask and hoodie end up having dinner to a bouncy tune, resulting in a happy and frankly disturbing ending for all. Bankhead said the festival is a great venue for not just experienced filmmakers to show their work, but for anyone who has always liked shooting video for fun and wants to take the next step. “I urge anyone with an itch to see what they can do with a camera to give it a shot,” said Jim Healy, the operations manager for the Herald. “We’ve had films with very high-end production values and films that you wouldn’t say had slick production win awards. The key is having a good story and a passion for wanting to tell that story in a short film.” Some of the basic submission rules for the festival include: all films can be no longer than eight minutes, there is a $15 submission charge for films submitted by April 3, and $18 after April 3 and by 5:30 p.m. April 10, the final deadline. Also, entered films cannot be shown on YouTube, Facebook or any other mass media site until after the April 17 festival. All rules and information about the festival can be viewed at www. statesborofilmfestival.com, the festival's official website. Selected films will be shown at the 2015 Statesboro Film Festival inside the Averitt Center on April 17. Awards will be given for Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Editing. “Even if you don’t make a film, come to the festival,” Healy said. “For $5, you get to watch about a dozen films, enjoy a delicious catered intermission spread and have a great time.”w

With entries ranging from a story about a woman falling for a serial killer to a look at why clowns are frightening to some people, the 2014 Statesboro Film Festival was an exciting evening for short film lovers of all genres. That's why the Statesboro Herald and the Averitt Center for the Arts will team up again for the Seventh Annual Statesboro Film Festival to find and honor the best locally made films. The festival is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the Averitt Center in downtown Statesboro. As in the past six years, the festival offers everyone a chance to do what Hollywood does — make your own film. But there are two firsts for this year’s festival: After being held on a Thursday night every year previously, the 2015 festival will take place on a Friday night. And a cash prize — at least $500 — will be awarded to the maker or makers of the best film. Matt Bankhead again will serve as event coordinator. He is a video producer for statesboroherald.com and the lead producer for The Statesboro Herald Report on Northland Cable and the Studio Statesboro vodcast. “One of our goals in starting the festival was to provide a creative outlet for filmmakers in the community,” Bankhead said. “That’s our goal again this year. I really encourage everyone to give it a shot.” Simply put, the Statesboro Film Festival wants your films. Last year, top honors at the festival went to Daryl Sullivan, who produced a film — "Stabby Stabby Stab Stab" — with no dialogue, but offered an offbeat tale with a serial killer pursuing a young woman in a comical manner. You will participate in a face-to-face interview with a state certified clinical evaluator. The evaluation will last approximately one hour. You are expected to pay at the time of your service. Have no fear. We gather information from you to determine if you have needs to be addressed - substance abuse, mental health issues, medical issues, financial, legal, social, etc. We, then, make recommendations and referrals based on your self report. Clinical evaluations are for those convicted of a DUI. Second offenders must bring a 7 year motor vehicle report from DDS. All clinical evaluation appointments occur after completion of the DUI Risk Reduction Program. Contact Vern or anyone at Bulloch Recovery Resources for an appointment. We have five evaluators on the DBHDD approved registry. 912-489-8401

#OccupyHanner for the last few home games If you haven’t been watching Georgia Southern men’s basketball this season — and judging by the attendance, you haven’t — you’re missing out. The crowd was great for the Georgia State game two weeks ago. The game Alex was exciting, the Eagles won and the atmosphere was electric. Southern had two games within a week following and the combined attendance at those two contests was less than the number who showed up for the State game alone. After the win over the Panthers, why in the world would you not come back? Come on, people.

Maybe it’s burn out as the Eagles had five home games over a 14-day stretch. I understand there are things other than basketball in life. But my goodness, we have an 18-5 basketball team fighting for a regular season conference championship Brown in its first season in the Sun Belt, and only 2,000 people show up? This team deserves so much better. And quite frankly, if you consider yourself a true-blue Southern fan, you’re shortchanging yourself if you haven’t caught Georgia Southern basketball fever yet. But there’s still time to get on board. On Feb. 7, the Eagles saw a five-

Southern capped a five-game homestand with a 65-60 win over Arkansas State and then hit the road for the first time in three weeks to face Arkansas-Little Rock. The Eagles led by as many as 15 in the first half and carried a nine-point lead into halftime. Things seemed under control until UALR went on a 29-11 run to start the second half and led by nine with less than five minutes left. Then Southern started to chip away. The Eagles had cut it to three when Jelani Hewitt was fouled on a three-point attempt to go to the line with two seconds left. He knocked down all three and the Eagles won it in overtime. Aside from Hewitt’s clutch performance late in the game, Georgia Southern’s struggles from the free throw line continued. The Eagles were a top ten free throw-shooting team in the country early in the season, but they have been flat out bad lately. Over the last seven games, Southern has shot 55 percent from the free throw line. Sure, the Eagles are 6-1 in those seven, but down the stretch and into the tournament, free throws are going to be critical to grinding out wins. Speaking of the tournament, Saturday night’s win mathematically clinched Georgia Southern a spot in

the eight team Sun Belt tournament field. With six regular season games left, the Eagles (18-5, 11-3) are in a three-team race for the number one seed and regular season title. UL Monroe (18-8, 12-3) is a half game ahead of Southern and Georgia State (17-8, 10-4) is one full game behind the Eagles in third place. The Panthers have a two game cushion over Texas-Arlington (14-10, 8-6). The top two seeds get a double bye into the semifinals of the conference tournament. The third and fourth seeds get byes into the quarterfinals. And of course, the winner of the tournament gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Georgia Southern hasn’t been to the Big Dance since 1992. It’s time for Eagle Nation to get behind this team and this program. Southern has three home games left, including two this week. So I’ll say it again: Get your butt to Hanner Thursday and Saturday nights. You’ll be glad you did. Georgia Southern baseball opened its season over the weekend and did so in style. The Eagles swept Bethune Cookman to get off to a 3-0 start. Southern hosts Georgia Tech Tuesday night and West Virginia comes to town this weekend for a three-game set. With men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball all at home, this will be a full weekend of Eagle athletics. Sounds like a good weekend to me.w

Wild boar causes flight delays at Spain's main airport MADRID — Spain's airport authority says a wild boar that broke through a perimeter fence at Madrid's international airport caused runways to be shut briefly and two landings to be delayed. The beast set off security alarms late Friday and when cameras focused on the spot, operators observed it turning around and loping off through the hole

it had made. The incident happened 100 meters (330 feet) from the nearest stretch of runway. It delayed an incoming flight from London 20 minutes and a domestic flight from A Coruna 10 minutes, the airport authority's statement said Saturday.

for house Gryffindor. The game gets a lot right and was a lot better than I expected from a game over 10 years old. Potter fans will be happy to know the game includes lots of characters and monsters found within the Harry Potter universe. The characters were easily distinguished and looked like the motion picture counterparts. The dialogue is strong and very accurate to what is expected from a Harry Potter experience. The game suffered from a few blemishes but none truly took away or rendered the game unplayable. First of all, the game doesn't explain a lot of things found in the world; if you aren't a Harry Potter fan, you will be left in the dark. Audio and sounds could have been a lot better for such a famous title. Also, sometimes I grew a

little angry at areas that took too long to get to a save point. There was also a gameplay fatigue given how big the school was and the repetitive monster encounters. Although lots of points from the story were left out of the game, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone stayed true to the books. Even though gamers who haven't watched the film or read the book may have many blank spots, there is a lot to do and explore in the game. Many of the elements presented are very addictive and testing out different combinations of various cards to see the effects on your spells are gratifying. If you aren't a Potter fan I wouldn't expect this game to convert you to one but current Potter fans will be pleased with what is found in the title.w

Harris looks directly at the camera, winks, grins, and then starts texting on a cellphone. He winks again 30 seconds later, and continues to grin and text for another minute. Harris' spokesman, Chris Meekins, says the 58-year-old congressman was winking at and texting with his mother, saying she "gets a big kick when she sees her son" on C-SPAN.w

10 Special to Connect The 3-Day Startup Event this weekend will put student entrepreneurs in a SharkTank type of environment to compete for the best business startup idea and marketing plan.

3-Day Startup puts students in Shark Tank The Georgia Southern Business Innovation Group (BIG) will be providing prospective business developers and innovators the opportunity to bring business ideas to life. This weekend, BIG will host 3 Day Startup (3DS), a world-renowned program that aims to kickstart new studentrun companies and build entrepreneurial capabilities in students and their university communities. The program creates a living entrepreneurship laboratory that brings together interested individuals from various backgrounds and provides students with the tools they need to start successful companies. Once selected, participants will attend workshops, generate business ideas, receive feedback from mentors, engage potential customers,

pitch ideas and receive a 3DS Success Kit. The 40 student participants for the 3DS weekend event have been selected and registration is closed, but Suzanne Hallman, a business advisor at BIG, says that the public is welcome to come watch and support the entrepreneur teams as they work through their pitches before a panel of guest judges, mentors and entrepreneurship experts. "The idea is really to get people who might not otherwise work together — because they're not in classes together or even in the same college — to really see what it takes to start a business," Hallman said. For more information, check out the event page at http:// georgiasouthern.3daystartup.org.w

Look who's talking GSU welcomes three media-savvy speakers

Feb. 18 — Michele Norris Performing Arts Center, 7 p.m. First up — Michele Norris, the first African-American female host for NPR, will be the featured speaker at Georgia Southern University’s belated 2015 Martin Luther King Day celebration. Norris, an award-winning journalist and one of the most recognized and trusted voices in American journalism, was the host of NPR’s longestrunning national program, All Things Considered, until 2012. Her journalism has garnered a Peabody Award, duPont Award and an Overseas Press Club Award, and the National Association of Black Journalists named her the 2009 Journalist of the Year. “We chose Michele Norris because of her reputation, professional accomplishments, and because of her initiative that she started in 2010, the Race Card Project, which encouraged a wider conversation about race among her readers and listeners,” said Dorsey Baldwin, director of the Multicultural Student Center. “We’ve even started the Race Card Project on our campus to get honest and open feedback from our students, faculty and staff.” Norris is the author of The Grace of Silence: A Memoir, in which she focuses on how America talks about race in the wake of the Obama presidential election and explores her own family’s racial legacy.

“We’re excited for her to discuss her book, The Grace of Silence: A Memoir, which explores her family's history; and we also hope that she will discuss how far we've come with the conversation on race and where do we go from here,” Baldwin said. As part of the talk, participants will be invited to fill out "Race Cards" to contribute to the project and explore their own opinions on the subject of race. Norris' talk will focus primarily on how the media has impacted the discussion of race relations in the United States. Feb. 19 — G.L. Lambert Russell Union Theatre, 6:30 p.m. The Georgia Southern chapter of the Collegiate 100 Women of America will be hosting a seminar by blogger G.L. Lambert. Lambert is the writer behind a relationship advice and dating blog called "Black Girls Are Easy" — a purposefully inflammatory title that, Lambert argues, is meant to catch attention and provoke interest. Shawna-Kay Waugh, a Georgia Southern student and member of the Collegiate 100, said the event is meant to raise awareness of the need to reevaluate relationship ideals that affect students — particularly women — on a daily basis. She said the group booked Lambert through his website because they found his blog popular and engaging and "saw it as an entertaining opportunity to educate women on positive relationship behaviors." The talk will take place in the Russell Union Theatre at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19. Tickets are $10 for general admission and can be purchased at the door. Feb. 23 — David Levithan Arts Building Auditorium, 6 p.m. David Levithan, the award-winning novelist of young adult fiction, will give a reading from some of his works at the Georgia Southern University Arts

Building Auditorium. Levithan will be available for questions during his appearance on campus, and there will be a book signing after the reading. The author’s novels include the groundbreaking Boy Meets Boy, The Realm of Possibility, Every Day and Two Boys Kissing. His novel Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, written with Rachel Cohn, was a New York Times bestseller and was made into a film of the same name. His novel Will Grayson, Will Grayson, written with John Green, was also a bestseller and recently spawned a spin-off novel, Hold Me Closer: The Tiny Cooper Story, which will be published in March. Levithan is also an editorial director at book publisher Scholastic and a professor of YA literature at The New School in New York. “We are thrilled to be able to bring David Levithan to Georgia Southern,” said Caren Town, Ph.D., professor of English in the department of literature and philosophy. “I’ve taught young adult literature for more than 20 years, and I have rarely found an author who is so engaging and appealing to students.” Equally important is that Levithan is a “champion of young people’s right to read and an ardent opponent of censorship.” Levithan won the Lambda Literary Award for Boy Meets Boy in 2003 and in 2006 for The Full Spectrum. At Scholastic, he is the editor of the PUSH imprint, which concentrates on new voices and new authors. Living close to a university offers unique opportunities to hear wellknown speakers, get your books signed and hear answers to your questions straight from the author's (or radio host's, or blogger's) mouth. Don't miss these great opportunities to see good speakers for free (or at least reasonably priced). The particularly ambitious can catch all three speakers as they come through. See you there!w

A blogger, a radio host and a young-adult author walk into a university. No, it's not a joke (although if you come up with a good punch line for that one, please let us know) — it's the lineup for this week's speakers at Georgia Southern University. Between a belated MLK Day speaking event and various seminars, GSU has three big names coming to campus in upclose-and-personal encounters you aren't going to want to miss.

Statesboro's 'sweetest race' just got sweeter Change in venue allows Chocolate Run to add fun new features The Chocolate Run 5k will be kicking off this Saturday for the third year in a row, but this year’s race planners have a few new tricks up their sleeve. The biggest change runners can expect is a different venue: The run will change locations from downtown Statesboro to the Georgia Southern University campus. This change may not seem like a big deal, but it is opening the door for several new features to be added to the race. Bulloch residents should be pretty familiar with Statesboro’s sweetest race, but for those who don’t know: The Chocolate Run 5K is an annual fundraiser to benefit Open Hearts Community Mission, a faith-based organization that aims to “feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and restore the downtrodden” in and around Bulloch County, according to its organizational mission.
