Clinical Evaluators

Is a clinical evaluation the same as an alcohol/drug evaluation? Is an alcohol/drug evaluation the same as an alcohol/drug assessment? Are all clinical evaluators on a state registry? A: Evaluations and assessments are usually interchangeable terms; however, clinical evaluations are mandatory by DBHDD for all first and subsequent DUI offenders. Both alcohol and drug assessments and clinical evaluations require a face-to-face interview with a clinician. DUI offenders can only be evaluated and/or treated by clinicians on the DBHDD state registry. Now, if you’re still confused call Bulloch Recovery Resources at 912-489-8401 or visit www.duistatesboro.com.

Holli Deal Saxon SOCK IT TO ME, BABY — A May Road woman, obviously frustrated by her juvenile son’s disobedience, called deputies around 8:20 p.m. one evening last week because he refused to fold socks and put them away. The boy told deputies his mother was always nagging him about chores. Deputies resolved the matter by having a stern talk with the child. Deputies and other law enforcement officers discussed such calls, where law enforcement intervention is unnecessary, at a recent training exercise in Statesboro. SHOTS FIRED — Statesboro police searched the area of Park Place Apartments Jan. 30 after a woman reported hearing gunfire. No shell casings or other evidence of gunfire was found. On Jan. 26, a Terressa Drive

woman told police she was taking out her garbage when she heard a single gunshot around 12:30 a.m. ALWAYS CHECK ID — An ongoing crackdown on sale of alcohol to underage persons led to police citing four people at local businesses last week. Undercover agents purchased booze at the following establishments: Gate Station on Northside Drive East, Gate Station on South Main Street, Walgreens and Kevin Food Mart on South Zetterower Avenue. OUCH — A Pine Drive man told police around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday that a woman threw a box at his head and struck him because he would not take their daughter to school.w

SPECIAL

From the caterer to the venue, from the bridesmaids' bouquets to the groomsmen's ties, the Wedding Walk event this Friday is the place to be for all your matrimonial needs.

Before the aisle, stop by the Wedding Walk Planning your special day can be an intimidating journey, but we have the hard part done for you at Downtown Statesboro’s Wedding Walk Expo on Friday, Feb. 6. The Wedding Walk will take place in the First Baptist Church Ballroom from 5:30–8 p.m. Entry is $5. An array of nearly 50 vendors will be on site to answer your questions and to help you plan your perfect wedding. Vendors will include wedding planners, photographers, florists, hair and makeup artists, attire, caterers, one-of-a-kind venues and more. Eagle Creek Brewery will be hosting an after-party immediately following the Wedding Walk Expo for all of our guests to attend, free of charge, from 8:30–10 p.m. Enjoy tastings of the best beer in the 'Boro for only $10 and relish in the entertainment for the evening: one of our favorite jam bands, Francis Marion & The Crocodiles. One beautiful bride will be the lucky winner of a grand prize valued over $1,500, including a $500 check from the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority.

Guests are guaranteed a worthwhile experience in wedded bliss — just ask Rebecca Smith, who attended the event in 2014. Rebecca Smith’s two sisters took her to the Wedding Walk Expo last March as a gift to help Rebecca begin her wedding plans. Her sisters never expected Rebecca would walk away as the grand prize winner. Smith, winner of the Wedding Walk 2014 grand prize, said, “Going to the Wedding Walk put in perspective everything I needed, and everything I had not thought of, to plan my wedding. Winning the grand prize gave us the freedom to have fun as we planned our wedding.” Smith went as far as to say, “the Wedding Walk made me want to get married once a year!” An assortment of wedding venues, catering options and talented photographers is all the more reason to plan a wedding in the city we call home. Through our F1RST Friday Wedding Walk Expo we hope Statesboro will become a destination wedding spot and allow guests to see the true magic that the ‘Boro has to offer.w

Although the game can be played without ever paying a cent, players will have to wait for certain actions — thus, the game becomes a time-killer that is played in bursts over a couple of hours in each day. That’s more important than any amount of time that we can put into community service. If you can make people think, ‘Cool, a rock band is doing that,’ then maybe more people would take part in their communities.” As of Connect’s print time The Northerners hadn’t been able to say what their project in

Statesboro would be, but their other projects include trail restoration in North Carolina, working with a children’s healthcare initiative in Virginia and helping out at an after-school music workshop for kids in Richmond. They’ll add other projects as the progress along the tour, driving as far as Texas in their new tour van: an old ’97 Chevy, affectionately nicknamed “the I KNIT 2.” (It’s a long story.) The Northerners is made up of five members: Justin and Ally Khoury, the brother-sister duo and frontsmen; Taylor Laub, the band's original guitarist; bassist Justin Esposito and drummer Josh McCormick. Together, the band brings a sound that RVA Mag describes as "classic rock and roll with twists of modern folk and gritty contemporary blues." They'll be playing music from their EP "Virginia," which they released back in May, in addition to new material and old covers. Come on out to Dingus Magee's Thursday night and welcome The Northerners to the South!w

Hometown showdowns turning in our favor In case you haven’t noticed, Georgia Southern basketball is pretty good. The Eagles improved to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play with two more wins last week. Southern absolutely Alex dismantled an Appalachian State team who brought a four-game winning streak to Hanner Fieldhouse Thursday night. It was never close as the Eagles cruised to an 83-46 victory. Saturday night, Arkansas-Little Rock appeared to be up to the challenge for most of the first half, but the Eagles closed the half with a quick 6-0 run to take a five-point lead into the break. Southern then opened the second half with a 14-4 run to stretch the lead to 15 and

never looked back en route to a fourth straight win by a score of 76-61. Georgia Southern is a perfect 9-0 at home this season and the Eagles have already matched last season’s total of 15 wins. With Brown 10 regular season games left, Southern sits in first place in the Sun Belt with a half game lead over Georgia State and UL-Monroe (both 8-3). And conveniently, those two teams will both make a trip to Statesboro this week. These are arguably the two biggest back-to-back home games Georgia Southern basketball has had in years. The Eagles have an opportunity to extend their lead in the standings with a couple of wins this week and they get that opportunity on their

home floor. Behind Georgia State and Monroe, nobody is any better than 6-5, so at this point it’s a threehorse race — and all three of those teams will take the floor in Hanner this week. Now, let’s talk about our friends from Atlanta. Any Georgia State fan who actually lives on this planet had to expect Southern would beat them fairly easily this year in football. And why not? Everyone else does. So coming into this year, State fans had to be looking at basketball as their opportunity to gain a foothold in this heated instate rivalry — especially after the struggles Georgia Southern has had in basketball over recent years. For so long, basketball was the biggest sport at Georgia State. And even so, Southern holds a 39-14 advantage in the all-time series. But let’s not take anything away from State. The Panthers are good. They have won four in a row and six of their last seven. They are the defending regular season champions of the Sun Belt. They went

17-1 in conference play last season and lost the championship game to UL-Lafayette by one point in overtime. They were the unanimous pick to win the conference title in preseason polls. And I’m sure State folks haven’t forgotten the “Paulson North” troll job Southern pulled in October when the two teams met in football. Something tells me that probably didn’t sit well with the Panthers. They are going to want some payback, and this is their first shot at it. So, Eagle Nation, it’s time to bring the noise. Hanner Fieldhouse better be rocking Thursday night. It’s a White Out, first place is on the line and it’s Southern vs. State. It doesn’t get much bigger than this. Saturday night is the annual Pack the House in Pink for breast cancer awareness, so picking out what to wear to the game is taken care of for you this week. Just show up early and blow the roof off the joint all night long. Stay hot, Eagles. Let’s do this thing.w

Prep Sports Reporter The Statesboro Herald, a small daily in southeast Georgia, the home of Georgia Southern University, seeks a sharp, versatile reporter who loves covering high school sports and embraces a full multimedia approach to coverage. And we don’t mean just football and basketball, important as those are in our area. The ideal candidate will have some experience covering prep sports or be a recent college graduate with a degree in journalism and a working knowledge of and interest in sports. This position not only requires writing, but also page design and copy editing, so we ask either that you be familiar with Adobe InDesign or be quickly trainable. An average of three nights a week, this person will design the sports pages and may also have to file a game or enterprise story the same day. Also, there is some on-camera work for our sports video shows and our live coverage of high school football. You must be a team player; our sports editor relies on this person to help make the section the best it can be in print and online. Salary is commensurate with experience, and we offer full benefits, including health coverage, 401(k) and paid vacation. Statesboro is a small but growing college town that is about 45 minutes from Savannah and an hour from the beach. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be our next prep sports reporter, please send a cover letter, resume and five recent clips to editor Jason Wermers at jwermers@statesboroherald.com.
