welcome

to the 7th Annual Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo! When the Statesboro Kiwanis Club made the decision to bring a rodeo to Statesboro we named it “The First Annual Statesboro Rodeo”, crossed our fingers and hoped it would be well received by the community. Now, here we are at the Seventh Annual Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo – it’s become a Statesboro spring happening. It’s with a sense of pride as well as anticipation that we look forward to great audiences, thrilling traditional rodeo events, awesome trick-riding and fun local events – steer dressing, kids calf scramble and treasure hunt. Our rodeo company, Hedrick Rodeo Company, was 2015 Stock Contractor of the Year for the Southeastern Professional Rodeo Association. They also had the Bronc of the Year, Willie,

and the Trick Rider of the Year, Jessica Hedrick. Danny and Jessica’s children, Justin & Emily Hedrick, won the 2016 award for Contract Act of the Year. Colt Hartt (AKA Colt 45) from Waycross, Georgia, will be our Rodeo Clown. Please take notice of our Rodeo Sponsors. Putting on a first-class rodeo and keeping it high value for you is only possible with their partnership. The best way to thank them is to do business with them. Take particular note that they are local businesses. Whoop and holler, laugh, applaud the effort in the arena and most of all have FUN! Your Statesboro Kiwanians

To date, the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro has raised $85,112 of it's $108,000 goal. When our club's goal is reached, we will have saved over 60,000 lives worldwide.

announcer Ty Miller

Rodeo announcer Ty Miller from Newville, Pennsylvania, grew up with a bull-rider father and a mom who showed horses. He got into rodeo announcing thanks in part to prorodeo announcer Greg Simons. Ty is also a competitor in rodeo, participating in tie-down roping and team roping. In 2015, at the age of 18, Ty won first place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) heeling competition. He was also ranked 21st in the Heeling Permit World Standings. At the young age of 17, Ty announced the 2014 Cody Nite Rodeo in Wyoming from June through August. He was homeschooled and merely a junior in high school at the time. In 2014 and 2015, he announced the America Finals Rodeo in

Shartlesville, Pennsylvania. As a horseback rider, Ty announces the rodeos from the back of his horse in the arena, up close to the action! When he’s on the road, his girlfriend, Carli Cavin, a PRCA music director — and rodeo competitor in breakaway roping and barrel racing — handles his music and equipment while he’s on horseback. The two of them travel with his horses, Roany, a bay roan gelding, and Cinch, a female bay horse. Also along for the ride are his two Australian cattle dogs, Dally, a female miniature blue heeler, and Riggen, a male miniature red heeler.

About the Rodeo Rodeo has a unique quality of origin to which no other professional sport can lay claim. It emerged from an industry... from the daily routine and tasks of a low paying job with long hours performed by ranch hands who came to know very well the animals with which they lived.

If it were any other kind of job, leisure hours might have produced another kind of ball game rather than a recreation involving the very animals one had already spent long hours tending. But cowboying has always been more of a way of life than a job or an opportunity to get rich.

Page 14

the contests Rodeo contests are divided into two categories: 1. Those that are scored by a judge... the rough stock events of bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding. Rough-stock contestants receive a score from each of the two professional rodeo judges in the arena based on riding style, control, and ability to make the 8-second whistle. Each judge awards the rider from one to 25 points on how well he rides and they score the horse or bull on the same point scale for how well the animal bucks. If the animal bucks the rider off, the judges will record a score only for the animal.

2. Those that are timed for speed... barrel racing, steer wrestling, and the roping contests. Contestants try to complete their event the quickest without receiving any time penalties for breaking the rules of their event. Riding broncs and roping calves are the events that were born on Western ranches. Being able to rope a calf or steer on the open range was a necessary skill if an animal required attention. Riding a bronco kind of horse was part of the territory, as many horses were green broke at best. The contests of riding and roping require only two things of the horses and cattle... either to buck or to run, actions that are natural.

freedom

The bald eagle is not only our nation’s symbol, but it is also a huge part of Georgia Southern and Statesboro culture. When Miss Rodeo USA comes to Statesboro for rodeo week, she visits the Georgia Southern University Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center to meet local celebrity Freedom and his handler, Steve Hein. Miss Rodeo USA 2016 Harmony Latham had this to say about meeting Freedom:

“Meeting Freedom was an absolute honor. I was so nervous to get to interact with one of the most highly regarded symbols of freedom, the United States and the pride of Georgia Southern! Truly an experience that I will never forget and one of my most incredibly treasured memories as Miss Rodeo USA 2016. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be part of this exciting time!”

bareback bronc riding

The event is judged according to the performances of both the rider and the bucking horse. It is a single-handhold, eightsecond ride. It starts with the cowboy’s feet held in a position over the break of the horse’s shoulders. It is held until the

horse’s front feet touch the ground on the first jump out of the chute. The rider earns points maintaining upper body control while moving his feet in a toes-turned-out rhythmic motion in time with the horse’s bucking action.

saddle bronc riding

Known as rodeo’s classic event, saddle bronc riding is judged similarly to bareback bronc riding but there are additional possibilities to being disqualified; that is, losing a stirrup or dropping the thickly braided rein that is attached to the horse’s halter. The cowboy sits on the horse differently due to the saddle and rein, and the spurring motion covers a different area of the horse. Saddle broncs are usually several hundred pounds heavier than bareback horses and generally buck in a slower manner.

On January 15th, 2017, Brittany was blessed to bring home the crown to her home state of Kentucky as Miss Rodeo USA. History was made as for the first time in 51 years, the coveted crown became associated with a Kentucky cowgirl. “I am so honored and blessed with the opportunity to represent the IPRA and the western way of life. I can’t wait to promote the greatest sport on dirt and travel across the country as your Miss Rodeo USA 2017.” Brittany comes from a small town in western Kentucky, where she grew up with a love for animals. Her passion for animals led her to attend college at Murray State University, join the rodeo team, and major in Animal Health Technology. She obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture degree in 2014 and became a board certified Licensed Veterinary Technologist. Brittany enjoys educating clients on the health of their large and small animals. Brittany is the daughter of Mickey and Debbie Howard and has an older brother, Chad. “Family means everything to me and that’s what I love about rodeo. It is a family-

oriented sport that upholds the strong values of hard work, respect, and focus to achieve what you want in life.” Brittany is grateful to have a wonderful family that supports her in her goals in life. Although she claims Kentucky as her home-state, Brittany also represented Georgia upon entering the 2017 pageant. As Miss Sunbelt Rodeo Queen, a representative of “North America’s Premier Farm Show”, she knows the connection between agriculture and rodeo. Brittany believes it is important to keep alive the western heritage, family farms, and local rodeos for generations to come. During her year, she will strive to promote her platform of “Stay Focused on the Ride.” In her journey as she travels over 100,000 miles across the country, Brittany plans to educate others on the importance of setting goals and achieving your dreams. Her dream has become a reality as she serves the International Professional Rodeo Association as their Miss Rodeo USA 2017. Brittany states, “I have my amazing family, friends, committee, supporters, and sponsors to thank for helping me to achieve my goal.”

steer wrestling This event was originally called “bull dogging” and requires the cowboy to lean from the running horse onto the back of a 600 pound steer, catch it behind the horns, stop the steer’s forward momentum and wrestle it to the

ground with all four of its legs and head pointing the same direction. The bulldogger is assisted by the hazer, who rides along the steer’s right to keep the animal running straight.

team roping

Team roping is the only rodeo event that features two contestants. The team is made up of a header and a heeler. The header ropes the horns, then dallies or wraps his rope around his saddle horn and turns the steer to the left for the other cowboy who ropes the heels. The heeler must throw a loop with precision timing to catch both of the steer’s hind legs. The time clock stops once both ropers have made a catch and brought the animals to a stop, facing each other.

calf roping Calf roping is an authentic ranch skill that originated from working cowboys. Once the calf has been roped, the cowboy dismounts and runs down the length of the rope to the calf. When the calf is on the ground, the cowboy ties three legs together with a six-foot pigging string. Calves are given a head start, and if the cowboy’s horse leaves the box too soon, a barrier breaks and a 10-second penalty is added to the roper’s time. In all of the timed events, a fraction of a second makes the difference between winning and losing.

barrel racing

This event is a horse race with turns. The time begins as they ride their horse across the starting line in the arena. They make a run around three upright barrels, which are in a cloverleaf pattern, and back to the starting line where the clock stops. Tipping a barrel is permitted, but if it is knocked to the ground, a five-second penalty is added to their time.

bull riding

Bull riders, who might not weigh more than 150 pounds, place a flat braided rope around a bull that weighs almost 2000 pounds. The bull rope is placed around the animal, just behind its shoulders. It is then looped and threaded through itself and the cowboy wraps it around his riding hand with only his grip holding him in place. The rider relies on balance and leg strength to make the eight-second buzzer. Look for bull riders to sit up close to their bull ropes and to turn their toes out because rides are judged on the riding style of the competitor and the bucking ability of the bull.

colt hartt

Rodeo clown Colt Hartt was riding horses before he was born, literally: His mother was winning rodeo championships during her senior year of high school — when she was 8 months pregnant. His dad was a rodeo champion, too, and his great-grandfather and grandfather were cracker cowboys and worked cows up and down the state. Colt, 34, grew up in the sport, participating in junior rodeo and high school rodeo and earning a scholarship for team roping and calf roping. He attended Southern Arkansas University and joined the Navy after graduation. Following four years of service, he returned to his rodeo roots. It was then that he began bull riding, but he has maintained his roping skills. Along the way, he began telling jokes and taking on the role as a rodeo funnyman — and rodeo clown Colt Hartt was born. He is well-known on the rodeo circuit as “Colt 45.” His acts include “Wild Bill and Widowmaker,” “The Rodeo Queen” and “The Hat Cleaner.” Colt’s fiancé, Taylor and their two daughters, 3-year-old Gracleyn Rose Hartt and 6-month-old Hayzie Jo Hartt, travel with him to almost every rodeo. We’re sure he will have you laughing throughout the rodeo, so sit back and enjoy!
