your student guide to statesboro

o, you’re on your way to Georgia Southern University and probably the best four — and maybe more — years of your life. Having chosen GSU, we’re sure you already know everything there is to know about your future alma mater, having read all the viewbooks, letters and catalogues they sent. But if you’re not from the Bulloch County area, then the only thing you probably know about Statesboro — or, as it’s known to us natives, the Boro — is that it’s home to GSU. While a college campus can seem like its own little world, there will come a time when either hunger for fast food or a shopping expedition forces you to venture off campus. That’s what this guide is for — to help you get to know Statesboro and Bulloch County a little better and answer the really important questions: “Where can I get some good hot wings?“ “How do I get cable?” “Where are the best local places to shop?” “What is there to do downtown?”

You’ll find the answers to these and other important questions, like “Where’s the hospital?” and “When does the city council meet?” (This may be important for a class or two.) Georgia Southern and its students are an important part of Statesboro and Bulloch County. Without you, we would not have many of the great restaurants and businesses that we have in this community. Not only does the university bring in new economic opportunities and diversity — not to mention putting Statesboro on the map with its six-time national championship Eagles football team — but its students also get involved with many community projects like Habitat for Humanity and Red Cross blood drives. Be a part of this community in your four-plus years here, and you will see all that this town has to offer. We hope you enjoy your years at GSU. Welcome to the Boro! Welcome to the Boro 2016 •3

living in the boro

Y

ou’re finally getting out of the house. No more parents watching your every move. You’re on your own. So: Where are you going to live? Statesboro has a variety of options, all with their own pros and cons. For incoming freshmen, that choice has been made simple for you by university rules. For upperclassmen, while the decision isn’t permanent, it can be binding for at least a year. Apartment complexes and eight GSU residence halls alike beckon to students, providing perks and conveniences geared to sway students either to live off-campus in a privately owned apartment or house, or in universityowned residence halls. While the rental companies and GSU housing officials harp the benefits of both styles of living, students say the choice isn’t quite cut-and-dried. Most agree that choosing a place to call home — for at least the next year — depends

largely on each student’s personal tastes. Georgia Southern residence halls offer great location and convenience, since they’re right on campus and located within walking distance of entertainment, food and sports options. Also, students who live on campus have easier access to tutoring, mentoring and computer labs with specialized programs for certain majors. Security is another draw. The halls are patrolled by campus security, residents have keys to get in halls, and visitors are supposed to be escorted. Living in a hall also makes it easy for students to get involved in campus activities, with events going on all of the time and RAs helping with information. Georgia Southern continued to change the way it provides housing for students in 2009 when the university required freshmen to live on campus and when it opened its newest residence hall, Centennial Place.

boro apartments

Last year, there were more than 5,000 students living on campus, most of whom (about 3,500) were freshmen. For the past several years, the university has added new residential buildings to its list of available on-campus housing to keep up with the university’s constant growth. Last year, then-university housing director Chris MacDonald said the university is constantly looking for ways to keep up with the growth of its student body. Construction is one way, but another is purchasing existing properties. He said the goal is to have between 25-30 percent of undergraduates living on campus. Campus Club apartments on Lanier Drive was purchased by the university. It transitioned from an off-campus complex to on-campus housing in fall 2012. Centennial Place, which opened in August 2009, houses 1,001 students. It is adjacent to the Russell Union and Landrum Dining Commons, and features a Tech Corner and College Optical Express. Freedom’s Landing, next to Paulson Stadium, also offers highend housing options that are on par with many of the off-campus apartment complexes. “I would say Georgia Southern students enjoy a quality of on-campus housing unequalled in the state,” MacDonald said. “I’m pretty confident in that.” Where many universities of similar size have perhaps one or two high-end housing complexes on campus, he said, Georgia Southern has six: Centennial Place, Freedom’s Landing, Eagle Village, University Villas, Southern Pines and Southern Courtyard. Older dorms include Kennedy Hall and Watson Hall, which MacDonald assured are on par with, if not better than, any other housing facility in the state. “Our housing is built around what we know students were looking for, and that is a little more privacy and stronger amenities,” he said. Many of the apartments have kitchens and in-apartment laundry facilities, private bathrooms and individual bedrooms. Many of them also have pool access.

Most apartment complexes in Statesboro offer a variety of living arrangements for students. The options include single-bedroom apartments as well as multi-bedroom facilities. Nearly all of the leasing companies provide separate leases for each room of the apartment, with the idea being that students won’t have to worry about splitting rent or other bills. This allows students to be responsible for their rent and lease separate from their roommates, in the event that a roommate fails to pay or uphold their end of the lease. Some apartment complexes offer residents the option of having furnished apartments for an additional monthly fee, while many offer both furnished and unfurnished choices to fit any

lifestyle, and student, that comes their way. While the apartments near GSU are geared toward young college students, they offer adult perks too. Pools, computer labs, gym facilities, and 24hour security are among the most attractive amenities. Those same services are available to students who live on campus, but usually with more restrictions and guidance from the school. Apartments are open year-round, unlike university housing, which closes during the summer months. Most apartment leases in Statesboro are 12-month leases — something to think about when you are signing because of its commitment through the following summer. Many complexes also offer “all-inclusive” billing, which covers rent and utilities at a flat fee. They also have special roommate matching programs. Apartment complexes have several amenities, and students don’t have to worry about mowing lawns, damage to apartments, or funding repairs. Like everywhere else, pet policies differ from apartment to apartment, so be sure you check out pet policies prior to purchasing a pet. Rent at apartment complexes can run from $400-$1,200 per month, with a 12-month lease being the standard. Deposits range from $100 (during some specials) to the full price of rent. At many complexes, students must have an adult (someone with verifiable employment) sign a guarantee for the apartment on the day the lease is signed. Leases are hard to break, and school officials say students should think long and hard before entering the legally binding agreement. However, the apartment complexes in Statesboro are very accommodating and quick to answer any concerns a student may have.

buying a house

Local realtors say more and more parents are purchasing houses or townhomes for their children going to GSU — particularly if siblings are attending at the same time. Purchasing gives parents a tax write-off for the interest. Plus, moving a roommate in a house to help with bills and pay rent earns money that goes straight toward the owner’s mortgage. For the renter, renting is normally a no-stringsattached introduction to home ownership. It gives an individual a feel for home life without the headaches of maintenance or repair work — something the landlord typically covers.

the essentials of college life

las, there’s a whole lot more to this college thing than just figuring out where you’re going to live and what classes you’re going to take. You have to keep yourself healthy and well-stocked with your basic necessities as a scholar — and you need to know where you can spend money on fun splurges and pick-meups, as well. In this part of the guide, you’ll find info about Georgia Southern University’s health center and what you, as a student, can expect from it. This will be good information to have at the ready when you need to visit their facility, whether you need a flu shot or treatment for something more urgent. We’ve also compiled details about your off-campus fitness options. Maybe you’re trying to preempt the

Freshman 15, or maybe you just want an off-campus environment to get your blood pumping and endorphins singing. Either way, there are plenty of workout options away from the RAC if you just need an excuse to step off campus for few hours a week. Your health is important to your personal well-being and scholarly success, and staying fit and active is part of that process of self-care. But keeping yourself happy is part of that process too, so we’ve also included a shopping guide. Statesboro may not have a Tanger Outlet, but we have plenty of distinct boutiques and unique outlets. Our shopping guide in the back of this section includes a breakdown of our different retail centers and what you can expect from each one. And yes, we’ve included textbook shopping in there, too.

student health As long as you pay your $94 health fee each semester ($55 during summer classes), the services provided by Georgia Southern’s Health Services, which include lab work, X-rays, minor surgery, women’s health and much more, are free, already covered by the health fee. They also provide vaccinations for the seasonal flu and H1N1 for no cost. Since August 2010, students have been able to make appointments online at www.georgia southern.edu/health and also can speak to a nurse 24 hours a day for nonemergency situations. If you are a full-time student at GSU, the Counseling and Career Development Center provides up to 12 free visits per academic year. The center provides individual, couples and group counseling, as well as workshops and crisis intervention services. The staff psychologists are confidential and do not communicate with parents or other university offices. And if a student has physical issues that may compound their emotional health, they will corroborate with the staff of the health center to treat that student’s condition. The office is only for short-term treatment. If a client needs treatment for substance abuse or a major mental health illness, the office will help find an appropriate off-campus doctor. If you’re a member of the community, a parttime student or someone seeking couples counseling, the clinic run by the psychology department at Georgia Southern is for you. The clinic is staffed by graduate students in the Doctor of Psychology program. They are supervised by licensed clinical psychologists. The price of each session ranges from $5 to $30. The clinic also sees teenagers and children. There, a secure, private web communications program called Eagle Online Student Health is available. This new program integrates directly with the Health Services Electronic Medical Records system, providing significant enhancements to your communication with Health Services including the following: 1) Immunization compliance function 2) Student patient appointment self-scheduling 3) Secure patient 4) Health insurance data collection and updates 5) Medical history forms 6) Pre-visit intake forms

7) Patient education and disease prevention 8) Rx refill request 9) View billing statements 10) View health center policies 11) After hours & emergency guidelines 12) Patient health record Because this is a very secure, private database website, you will be required to log in using your existing My Georgia Southern student username and password. new facility for health services

After 38 years in a health center built to handle a student population of about 5,000, Georgia Southern unveiled its new Health Center in January, a 2016 version that’s modern and large enough for the university’s 20,500 students. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for its new campus location across from the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center and offered the public tours of the 39,000-square-foot facility. Georgia Southern students began utilizing services in the new location when the spring semester began. “What excites us most about this new facility is that it was born out of a legitimate need, not because we wanted to be a showpiece on campus, but because we need to be able to meet the appointment demands and expectations of our patient population,” said Dr. Brian DeLoach, medical director for Health Services. “We could not do that in the old facility — literally there was no room to grow. This new facility will now allow us to grow to meet the demand.” The contemporary building provides an expanded check-in and waiting area and holds a total of 48 exam rooms, 12 of which are dedicated to women’s health, an increase of more than three times the number of exam rooms at its previous location. The new facility also will feature expanded pharmacy, x-ray, laboratory and immunizations areas, in addition to offering new services, including physical therapy. The new location is also home to Eagle Eye Care. “The students and the Health Services staff are 10 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

very excited about this new facility,” said Diane Norris, director of Health Services. “Our students now have access to a state-of-the-art facility as well as continued quality care for their health care needs. There are very few universities in the University System of Georgia that have this kind of facility.” An $8.5 million project, the building features sustainable elements including LED lighting in all public spaces, the use of natural lighting and low flow toilets. DeLoach said, “The mission of Health Services is to meet or exceed the student patients’ full range of needs and expectations that relate to the delivery of healthcare services — medical, counseling, educational and wellness – while providing them with cost-effective, high-quality care in an efficient manner with a focus on educating students on how to be knowledgeable healthcare consumers.”

ASK A STUDENT: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

A: “If you hang out with your old

friends and they party all the time and don’t study, don’t get drawn into that crowd. Hang out with the classmates that do well and would make you do better.”

— David Miller, senior

A: “Use Folio a lot, and check your email. The most common mistake I made was not checking my email.”

— Branden Stafford, senior

A: “Make an effort to get involved

in different organizations on campus. Network and connect, and get to know as many people as you can.”

off-campus fitness options Looking to lose a few pounds or just maintain an excellent physique? Statesboro has plenty of options for your workout needs. The most obvious place to look is the Recreation Activity Center located on Akins Boulevard. An expansion to the center — known as the RAC — was completed in 2006 and added an additional 125,000 square feet of workout space, bringing the total size of the building to 215,000 square feet. The LEEDcertified facility includes an indoor competition pool, eight indoor basketball courts, fitness center, 45foot rock-climbing wall, bouldering cave and indoor track. Open only to students, faculty and staff, the RAC offers fitness classes and personal training by certified trainers (for an additional fee). Special weekend memberships are available to Georgia Southern alumni. A portion of students’ tuition pays for the gym, so there are no fees for using any of the exercise equipment or facilities. For more information about the RAC and all Campus Recreation and Intramurals, visit www. georgiasouthern.edu/cri. However, if the RAC doesn’t offer what you need, there are other workout locations in Statesboro for you to choose from. For the ladies, there is LOA Fitness located on U.S. Highway 80. LOA Fitness is a fitness club maintained exclusively for women, offering specialized circuit-training equipment and other standard club amenities, including aerobics floors, cardio equipment, group classes, personal training and nutritional counseling. Statesboro also offers a pair of 24-hour gyms, open seven days a week. N Shape Fitness Center, at 739A Northside Drive W., is an exclusive fitness center that has a membership limited to 300 members. The center offers a wide variety of cardiovascular and weight training equipment. Included in each membership is aqua massage, tanning and a variety of group classes including yoga, zumba, boot camp, step, abs and rowing. Statesboro Snap Fitness, at 609 Brannen St., offers 24/7-access memberships starting at less than $1 a day and month-to-month contracts. The center features a newly expanded facility, with more than 6,000 square feet of space, complete with state-of-the-art Cybex equipment, group

fitness/training studios and free weights. Group fitness classes are also provided. You can find 180 Fitness on Fair Road behind Wendy’s and Zaxby’s. 180 Fitness offers more than 70 pieces of equipment, including free weights, spin bikes, rowing machines, cardio machines and Cybex equipment. buying books After shelling out big bucks for tuition, housing, and other college expenses, students and parents might be shocked by the prices of textbooks. According to old campus newspapers, students have been complaining about textbook prices since the 1930s, when the average book cost about $3. So how can you budget for the heavy cost of textbooks? A big part depends on how many classes you are taking and the books your professor has chosen for the class. Your major can greatly affect how much you spend on books, and there are other factors to consider as well. You have to keep in mind that along with books there are supplies you’ll need for class, such as study guides, notebooks, pens, lab supplies or art supplies. According to usnews.com, the average fulltime student spent as much as $1,200 last year on books and supplies. The store isn’t involved in choosing which books are used in the classroom. Professors spend a lot of time trying to find just the right books for their courses. You can try to recoup some of the cost at the end of the semester by selling back the books you will no longer be using. With any luck, you could end up getting back as much as 67 percent of your original textbook costs. There are a few things you can do to save some cash. First, try to buy used textbooks. As a new student you may think this is odd, but if you don’t mind some folded corners and some highlighting you could save yourself quite a bit. However, there usually aren’t that many used books and they sell out fast, so get to a local bookstore quickly to cash in on these savings. Also, be careful not to end up with an edition that’s too much older than the one your professor requested for the class. Some new editions are not substantially different from old ones, but others contain outdated information, different exercises and supplemental features that may be important to the class. If you have questions, it would be wise to talk to some older students who have recently taken the course. Another thing to be aware of is book theft. Textbooks are valuable, and some people steal books and try to sell them back to the bookstores for cash. We recommend keeping an eye on your books and never leaving them unattended — not even in the library. To get the most dollars back, make sure the books are in good condition when returning them.

Most local bookstores will not buy back books that have water damage, missing pages or excessive ink writing and highlighting. Also, if your book came as part of a package, you must have all your pieces to return the book. This includes CDs, study guides, blueprints, manuals, etc.

Setting up the essentials

U L t i l i t i e s

et’s be honest: Being able to watch the new seasons of Game of Thrones is no longer a “negotiable” for your llife. You know what else is a non-negotiable? Showers. Now that you’re an adult out on your own, you’re responsible for making sure you have access to all the basic necessities, including internet access so you can download Game of Thrones (not that we’re advocating for that) and city water so you can bathe (we are definitely advocating for that). You’ve got a whole “honey do” list but no “honey” to “do” it for you, and nothing cripples a burgeoning sense of maturity and independence quicker than having to ask your mom to help you get your toilet to flush. And doing all the research on your own can get kind of overwhelming — especially if you haven’t set up a wire-

less network yet. If you can’t look up the numbers of the internet providers, who you gonna call? (If you answered “Ghostbusters,” you might just want to go back home.) Luckily for you, we have compiled a handy little guide here with all the local television, internet, phone and electricity providers, in addition to the city information to help you set up your water and trash services. Additionally, we have an emergency guide in case you get in a jam, and a “legal tips” section in case you get in a jam and it’s your fault. We’ve also included a section for other local amenities and services, including the post office, driver’s services and all the tiny things that add up to functioning as an independent, responsible adult. Or so they tell us. Now: Go get your utilities set up so you can happily return to your regularly scheduled Netlix binge-watching session.

legal tips for staying out of trouble Fireworks are now legal in Georgia, but be sure to abide by county and city rules so you don’t get into trouble or upset your neighbors. Liquor is sold by the drink in bars and restaurants, but it isn’t available by the bottle in Bulloch County. You won’t be able to legally purchase alcohol after 1 a.m., and “to-go cups” are a no-no. So is having an open container of alcohol in your vehicle. And if you get plastered at a local establishment (or at home), please don’t climb behind the wheel. Local judges aren’t fond of drinking and driving. Don’t attempt to walk home drunk, either. Call a friend or a cab — stumbling down the road can get you a pedestrian under the influence charge. If an officer does stop you, it’s best to be honest. Giving false information is a crime that will only make your plight worse — and the officer will find out if you are lying. All persons convicted of first offender DUI/possession of controlled substances charges must complete DUI school, clinical evaluation (unless waived

by the court) and treatment if recommended by the evaluation. If you throw a party, make sure you are not so loud your neighbors will be disturbed. And if they are disturbed and you have illegal drugs or underage drinkers at your party, police will know and people will be arrested. The best bet? Invite the neighbors, and make sure you break no laws. When you gotta go, you gotta go. Regardless, guys (and gals), make sure you use a restroom facility. Urinating in public, whether or not you think you’re out of sight, is illegal and can rack up a charge of indecent exposure. You and the roomie don’t get along? Many arrests are made when roommates or romantically involved couples — even friends — lose tempers and fight among themselves. The best bet is get away from the situation, cool off and try to resolve the issue when tempers are under control. If not, when the fight starts and somebody calls police, somebody usually goes to jail.

ow for the fun part. You might not realize it at first, but for a fairly small town, Statesboro has an eclectic, dynamic cultural scene wth a little bit of everything. If you enjoy live music, Statesboro plays host to many bands — both bigname, out-of-town acts and local talent — performing onstage every weekend. Maybe you’re more of an art enthusiast? Between the Averitt Center for the Arts and the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art, there’s always an art gallery to visit. We’ve got museums, too: The Statesboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the GSU Museum have rotating exhibits throughout the year. Annual festivals and a fantastic farmers market? Yup, we’ve got those too. And we have not one, not two, but three amazing theatrical venues, featuring plays, musicals, comedians, comedy musicals (yes, those are a thing), ballet, one-acts, variety shows — you name it, we’ve got it. Flick through these next few pages to see just a small sampling of what the Boro has to offer.

big music in the boro Whether it’s local musicians making the rounds in the Boro’s music scene or large-scale concerts featuring nationally known recording artists, there is never a shortage of high-quality entertainment available in the Boro. In the past, the University Programming Board has worked to bring a big-name act to Statesboro for an on-campus concert. GSU’s Spring Concert at Paulson Stadium featured the Grammy award-winning country music trio Lady Antebellum (known for hits including “I Run to You,” “American Honey,” “Need You Now” and “Downtown”) as its headlining band, with opening acts by Joe Nichols (“Gimme That Girl,” “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” “Sunny and 75”) and Kristian Bush of the country music duo Sugarland (“Baby Girl,” “Stay”). The Spring Concert event is currently in flux, but that doesn’t mean Statesboro will be missing out on these big-name acts. Indeed, many country artists have performed to large crowds at GSU in recent years, including Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and The Band Perry, but non-country artists including Migos, 3 Doors Down, Ciara, Ludacris and The Fray also have visited the Boro. Thanks to local event organizers and talent booking agencies, in addition to Georgia Southern’s Performing Arts Center, the Boro has recently played host to artists like Corey Smith, David Nail and Arlo Guthrie. But hosting big acts is nothing new to Georgia Southern. The Rolling Stones played their first show at a U.S. college campus at GSU’s own Hanner Fieldhouse. Other legends to have played at Southern include Jimmy Buffett, Lynard Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band. There are even some big-name acts who were playing venues around the Boro long before they became famous, including Luke Bryan (a GSU alumnus who has brought his Farm Tour to the area in the recent past), Jason Aldean, Jennifer Nettles (of Sugarland) and Cole Swindell, just to name a few. So, keep your eyes peeled and your ears open, because you never know who might be next on the musical road to success.

local musicians, boro-born talent

The Orange Constant

College towns are breeding grounds for bands, and Statesboro is no exception. Our little city has a constantly rotating roster of up-and-coming artists. Some of them dissapate after graduation; some of them graduate to the big time and hit the road, chasing bigger scenes in Athens, Atlanta or other music havens. And some local favorites stick around, building up fan bases here in town and serenading Statesboro on a monthly basis. Most restaurants with bars have live music during the weekend, notably Gnat’s Landing, Dingus Magee’s, GATA’s and South City Tavern, to name a few. Pick a spot and hang around on a Friday night, and you’re sure to be in for a good show from one of our many local music groups. Music festivals in Statesboro come and go, but we do have several tried-and-true favorites. In the spring, Boropalooza brings together five to six bands for an all-night blast. Summer Sessions and Summer Jam do the same, sometimes spanning a whole weekend full of music. We’ve got everything from folk, blues and indyrock to hard rock, funk, soul and country. Explore a little and we guarantee you’ll find a favorite band to follow while you’re here in the Boro.

The Boro’s community theater, located in the Averitt Center for the Arts in downtown Statesboro, bears her name. Local talent performs at the center year round in local productions.

Fine arts in downtown Statesboro Whether you are a serious artist or just exploring new things, Statesboro’s downtown art center offers something for the creator in everyone, from performances and art shows, classes and studio space to volunteer and employment opportunities. Whether you want to appreciate art, take lessons or get onstage yourself, the Averitt Center has a spot for you. Opened in September 2004, the Averitt Center and Emma Kelly Theater are focal points in the downtown art scene. The Averitt Center’s main building is housed inside the old Bank of Statesboro, built in 1911, and the Emma Kelly Theater is located inside the building that served as Statesboro’s movie theater from 1936 to 1982. Through the efforts of the city and community, the buildings underwent a $4.3 million renovation to create a community arts gallery and theater. The art center is named after Hal Averitt, former Statesboro mayor, whose vision initiated the project. The theater is named for Emma Kelly, “The Lady of 6,000 Songs,” who called Statesboro home. Every year, the Averitt STARs — the community performers — hold the Emma Awards in her honor and celebrate the best of the year’s performances in a mini Tony Awards ceremony. In March 2015, the Averitt Center opened its new-

est facility at 41 West Main Street. Including the Jurijs Safonovs Grande Dance Studio, the Mical Whitaker Black Box Theater and the Helen Rosengart Gallery, the Center for Performing Arts represents Phase 1 of the Averitt Center’s master plan. Phase 2 will involve the renovation of a building on East Vine Street that previously housed the dance classes and will become the Roxie Remley Center for Fine Arts. Phase 3 will be the Thurman Lanier Center Center for Art Education, in an as-yet unidentified location. In addition to constantly rotating gallery exhibits featuring artists from throughout the country, the Averitt Center for the Arts always has a full season of stage shows featuring a wide range of entertainment. At the Averitt Center, you’re just as likely to see a revived classic like The Importance of Being Earnest as you are a family friendly musical like South Pacific or Oliver! Occasionally, the Averitt Center will push the envelope with something a little more outside the box, like last year’s Calendar Girls and this year’s Young Frankenstein, the Musical. Around Halloween, their annual Rocky Horror Picture Show draws crowds from around the region, and The Nutcracker Ballet by the Averitt Center’s dance students is a favorite Christmas tradition. performing arts center

the biggest acts in town The Performing Arts Center at Georgia Southern University is a modern performance facility, featuring an 825-seat theater complete with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. Since opening its doors in 2002, the PAC has served the GSU and regional communities by providing world-class performing arts, music and dance as well as educational programs. In addition to presenting a season of professional touring shows, the PAC also hosts events for campus departments, student groups and community organizations. Past seasons have included Broadway musicals, international acts, celebrity impersonators, professional ballet and dance companies and worldrenowned musicians. It is also the annual host of Statesboro’s biggest nonprofit fundraiser, Dancing with the Statesboro Stars, in October. The PAC’s 2016–2017 season is looking as exciting as ever, and if past seasons are anything to go by, you’re going to want to get your backside in one of the theater’s 825 seats. Tickets for Georgia Southern students are always $10 with a valid Eagle ID. Follow the Georgia Southern University Performing Arts Center on Facebook and Twitter at @ThePACatGSU for the most up-to-date information regarding PAC performances.

GSU’s center for art & theatre

student productions, professional quality

GSU’s Center for Art & Theatre is a public venue for performances, art exhibitions and events. It is the home of the Black Box Theatre, Betty Foy Sanders Georgia Artists Collection and Smith Callaway Banks Southern Folk Art Collection. The Theater and Performance students at the CAT deliver performances far beyond what one might expect from undergraduate performers. Under the direction of professors Lisa Abbott, Nick Newell and other guest directors, the CAT’s shows consistently defy expectations for student productions, with an incredible ability to shock and amaze. The Black Box Theatre in which they perform is a versatile, intimate space, and each new set is a borderline magical transformation. Because they are a college group, the directors are able to take on more challenging, controversial shows that other venues might shy from, and they turn those scripts into award-winning performances. In 2014, their edgy and tense court drama, Race: a Play, was selected out of 60 competing plays for performance at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival — a national accolade. And just this past summer, students took their devised theater piece — that is, a show they created in a collaborative class effort — to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. 28 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

statesboro film festival

get your cameras rolling You know you’ve got an awardwinning film in you — you just need motivation to create it and opportunity to screen it. Luckily, with the Statesboro Film Festival, you get both. Every year in April, the Statesboro Herald and the Averitt Center for the Arts team up for the festival to find and honor the best locally made films. Films are judged in categories such as Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Director and Viewer’s Choice. A grand prize of $1,000 goes to the cast and crew of the entry that takes home Best Film. On the night of the festival, competitors and film enthusiasts are invited to view the screenings in the Emma Kelly Theater, where the entries are projected on the big screen. Thanks to new technology

and equipment, this year, the films were shown in high definition for the first time. In addition to judges’ critical evaluations, films get the chance to earn accolades from the audience: All accepted films are available at statesborofilmfestival.com to view and vote on. This year, the Best Film prize went to the documentary “For Nepal,” which shared intimate accounts of indignous Nepal people directly affected by the earthquakes of April and May 2015. The film, directed by Kenny Gamblin, also clinched Best Cinematography. The Best Editing award went to a music video titled “P.Y.D.G.” directed by Blake Turner, which depicted two detectives striving to take down a serial killer.

A film titled “Celestial” was directed by Beeka Regassa, who was awarded Best Director. The film features members of a religious cult who commit suicide by drinking poison after being convinced by their leader that the afterlife is a better choice than life on Earth. The festival is extremely beginner friendly, and everyone is invited to try their hand at directing and producing a film. To browse last year’s winners, visit the festival’s official website, www.statesborofilmfestival. com, where you also can keep an eye out for rules, regulations and important dates starting in February 2017. And break out those cameras. The Statesboro Film Festival really, really wants your films.

artsfest — long may it live

Early spring brings an explosion of color to Georgia Southern University’s Sweetheart Circle, and we aren’t talking about the flowers. ArtsFest, an annual arts event in April, offers residents from Bulloch and surrounding counties the opportunity to unleash their inner artist. The festival, completely powered by volunteers, is a free public event that offers visitors a chance to create their own art, buy unique treasures crafted by artists from GSU and across the region, watch and listen to an array of performances and treat their taste 30 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

buds to culinary delights. The event brings thousands of visitors to campus each year. Last year was the first ArtsFest hosted by the StatesboroBulloch County Parks and Recreation Department. After GSU’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art announced at the beginning of 2016 it would no longer host the event, the recreation department put ArtsFest 2016 together in less than three months. They had plenty of help from the community, including the university and many of its departments, the Averitt Center for the Arts, Bulloch

County Schools, Charter Conservatory, the Statesboro Regional Art Association and the Statesboro Regional Library. It was a huge effort and a terrific result. While ArtsFest is still in a time of transititon, hopefully it will enjoy another 34 years in the hands of the rec department. ArtsFest’s purpose is to promote the arts and art education through performing, exhibiting and demonstrating artists. Follow ArtFest on Facebook for more information, and send inquiries to artsfeststatesboro@ gmail.com.

connect statesboro — your alternative bi-weekly As you can see in this section, there is a Iot going on in Statesboro. Keeping track of touring bands, upcoming shows and everything else you want to see and do can be a full-time job. Don’t you wish someone was keeping track of all of this for you? Oh, wait. Someone is. Connect Statesboro has been covering the arts, entertainment and culture scene in Statesboro since 2005. Geared toward young adults (that’s college age and young professionals) in the greater Statesboro metropolitan area, Connect provides coverage of upcoming concerts, stage performances, festivals and visiting artists. It also gives you a backstage peek at the artists and entertainers who make Statesboro’s culture scene tick. You’re as likely to find a write-up on an upcoming musical as you are to read an in-depth interview with a published author or a rising band playing a local show.

You can pick up a copy of Connect Statesboro in news boxes across town and all over campus, ready for you to read whether you’re on one of the GSU transit buses, waiting in line for an ID or just taking a break between classes. It’s always filled with articles that examine issues concerning your life, comics you won’t find anywhere else, photos from the scene around town, GSU sports info from the Tailgate Tattler, the latest gaming news from their Vampin’ Gamer and more. The 20–24 page magazine is published once every two weeks, but they have a frequently updated website, an active social media presence and plenty of online exclusives, including monthly Studio Sessions with local musicans and — so they tell us — a new podcast endeavor. Visit their website, www.connectstatesboro.com, and subscribe to their Facebook page so you don’t miss out.

main street farmers market We know what you’re thinking: “Why is the farmers market in the entertainment and culture section?” Answer: If you’re reading this guide, you are most likely a millennial, and farmers markets are part of millennial culture. Don’t even try to pretend it isn’t true. In all seriousness, the Main Street Statesboro Farmers Market is an excellent place to visit and a beloved staple of downtown life. Every Saturday from April through November, visitors to Charlie Olliff Square behind Sea Island Bank find fresh, local food and live entertainment from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Saturday-morning market draws nearly 1,100 visitors each week and is home to more than 45 vendors selling fresh produce, meats, dairy products, plants and many unique crafts from Bulloch and surrounding counties. Locals aren’t the only ones who understand the Main Street Farmers Market is something special. Last year, The Daily Meal ranked it No. 62 in its “101 Best Farmers Markets in America” article, and Deep South Magazine placed it among “10 of the South’s Best Farmers Markets.” Not bad for a little town. The market accepts credit and debit cards to make shopping easier, and they can accept SNAP/EBT amounts up to $25 per week. They even have their own farmers market app, which you can download from the Apple App Store. For more information, contact the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority at (912) 764-7227 or visit statesborofarmersmarket.com.

first fridays in downtown statesboro For a fun, free way to spend a Friday evening, check out downtown Statesboro’s First Friday. First Fridays have become a downtown Statesboro tradition. Community members flock to the area to enjoy visiting with local merchants, shopping and special events. Many merchants stay open late, offering discount specials and refreshments. Street vendors feature homemade crafts, snacks and beautiful fine art pieces. Art by regional and local artists is on display, and many of the galleries offer refreshments. Organized by the DSDA, each month follows a different theme. Two of the most popular events are Scare on the Square, which actually will be held the last Saturday in October, and the Holiday Celebration in December. You won’t want to miss the fun! First Friday’s goal is to provide a place to sell local products and enjoy a family friendly community gathering, which promotes healthful living to the visitors and residents, all while stimulating the downtown Statesboro economy. Activities are free unless otherwise indicated. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. the first Friday of every month! Go to www.statesborodowntown.org for a complete calendar of events.

ASK A STUDENT:

What is Statesboro’s best-kept secret?

A: “One: We actually have a lot

of good coffee places, depending on what you want. Two: There’s so many alumni that are still in Statesboro that are active within the school and within the community, and if you need help or want to bounce ideas off of them, they are there and are 110 percent willing to help you out. I think that’s one of the best things about Statesboro.”

annual kiwanis traditions

KIWANIS OGEECHEE FAIR About 50 years ago, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club decided an agricultural fair would be a great way to raise money to funnel back into the community. The club was right, and the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair has been a resounding success ever since. The weeklong event each October is highly popular and draws thousands of visitors, many from the surrounding counties. There are gentle thrills for the faint of heart as well as more exciting rides for the brave. The Amusements of America company strives to provide a variety of top-level rides each year and usually has something new every fall for the adventurous to try. From cotton candy to candy apples, Italian sausages and funnel cakes, the midway provides traditional fair food, while local restaurants, church groups and other organizations have booths with homemade baked goods, chicken and dumplings, chili and freshfried pork rinds. The Statesboro Kiwanis Club always offers delights at the Pancake House with fresh griddle cakes, sausage and old-fashioned cane syrup (maple for those who want it), and The Circle K smokes some mighty fine barbecue sold at the Barbecue Hut. 34 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

From Elvis impersonators to gospel groups and escape artists, there is live entertainment on select nights. There are also several livestock shows held each night during the fair in which local youths compete for the best sheep, hogs and cattle. There are several exhibit areas — from the business section, where local agencies, organizations and businesses display their wares or promote their services, to the 4-H minibooth exhibit in which students show their work on certain projects. There is an art show, agricultural products exhibit, homemakers’ crafts, handmade items and much more. Kids can enjoy exciting exhibits, and adults can take a trip back in time as they wander through the historic Aldrich House and outbuildings. In the Heritage Village, one can see how corn is ground into meal, watch how a blacksmith works and visit an authentic country store. At least one night of the week, the Kiwanis Club gives free admission to students with a valid college ID. The 2016 Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair is scheduled for October 17–22, located — as always — at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds off Highway 67. See you there!

annual kiwanis traditions

STATESBORO KIWANIS RODEO One of the newest and most popular events is the Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo. Thousands have packed the fairgrounds for each of the first six years, so make plans early if you want to catch the 2017 edition. The rodeo proved to be a big hit right from the start, with two sold-out shows in 2011. The second event expanded to three shows — Friday night and Saturday afternoon and evening — all drawing large crowds. In 2013, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club cut back to two nighttime shows, but

added seating to accommodate the crowds. You can expect the rodeo to be a fixture at the fairgrounds for many years to come. The International Professional Rodeo Association-sanctioned event attracts an international field of competitors. This year’s version drew cowboys and cowgirls from all over the world, including Chile and Canada. The locals stepped up to the saddle, too. The rodeo features several contests — some of which have a lighter atmosphere than others, such as steer dressing and the

kids’ calf scramble. Steer dressing requires teams of three adults, with at least one female, to catch and dress a steer with a scarf, shorts and two socks. It sounds (and looks) silly, but winning teams received $100 cash, a $50 gift certificate from AgriSupply and meal vouchers from McAlister’s Deli. The 2017 rodeo will be held at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds in mid-April. No boots or cowboy hats required — just come out for a good time and a favorite Statesboro tradition.

Luckily, in Statesboro, you don’t have to go too far to find a getaway in nature. Between its walking and biking trails, local and state parks and reserves, Statesboro has plenty of variety for your outdoor wanderings. The parks and recreation department provides events and teams to get people out to play, and — if you are willing to look for them — there are opportunities to camp, canoe, kayak and more. Throughout the school year, Southern Adventures leads

And for students who prefer to strike out on their own, Southern Adventures is the best one-stop shop for all the gear you might need, including everything from cookware and tents to canoes and bicycles for low rental rates. For outdoor enthusiasts who prefer to appreciate nature a little closer to home, Statesboro has several 5Ks throughout the year, and students are welcome and encouraged to participate. And if you just want to enjoy some sun, a cool breeze and the calls of local birds, Georgia Southern’s campus is a beautiful place to start. Many a student will tell you that if you want to spend a peaceful afternoon on campus, Sweetheart Circle is one of the best places to hang your hammock and read or nap on a sunny afternoon. So get out there and let Statesboro surprise you with its natural Southern beauty.

mill creek park Located off Highway 24 just a few miles from campus, Mill Creek Regional Park is Bulloch County’s main park. With 155 acres, Mill Creek offers numerous playing fields, picnic pavilions, two playgrounds and a scenic lake with a paved walking path. There is also a 1.25-mile trail where you can jog, skate or just walk your dog. The park is also home to Splash in the Boro, a water park featuring several pools, slides and a lazy river. On July 4th, Mill Creek also hosts an Independence Day celebration — the Firecracker Fest — complete with contests, live music and one of the best fireworks displays in southeast Georgia.

Whether it’s volunteering or participating in a sport, students can find plenty of opportunities to get involved in the community through the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department. Flag football, basketball and softball are just a few of the sports offered during the year. You can form your own team or check with the rec department for a list of teams looking for members. walking paths One of the nicest paths to walk, jog, bike or skate along in Statesboro, the Willie McTell Trail — named in honor of legendary blues guitarist “Blind” Willie McTell — is a convenient way to get from campus to downtown. At just over a mile, the path stretches from Triangle Park on East Main Street to the northeast corner of campus on Fair Road. The smooth, wide path is lighted and landscaped and offers bike racks at both ends. Another popular trail, the S&S Greenway offers riders and pedestrians nearly 3 miles of pavement stretching from downtown to the city’s limits. The 2.7-mile pathway begins and ends at trailheads located on Gentilly Road and the intersection of Burkhalter and Pretoria Rushing roads. The trail is maintained by Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department, and features landscaping, lighting, signage and bathrooms (at trailheads). The path runs behind the Statesboro Crossing shopping plaza, under the Veterans Memorial Parkway and over Cawana Road, where it continues along Railroad Bed Road to the intersection of Burkhalter and Pretoria Rushing roads. Parks officials hope eventually to stretch the trail to Brooklet, about 7 miles from Statesboro.

boro golfing If golf is your game, you have some options to choose from locally. The private course at Forest Heights Country Club on Country Club Road has an 18-hole course, pro shop, driving range and practice green. It’s also the home of the Schenkel Invitational, one of college golf’s premier events. Georgia Southern Golf Course opened to the public in 2013. It’s located off of Golf Club Road about 5 miles outside of Statesboro. Students can schedule a tee time using their Eagle ID. Hackers Golf Park, ranked as one of the nation’s top 100 driving ranges, has a little bit of everything, including a lighted driving range, practice green and pro shop as well as a fun miniature golf course. If golf’s not your thing, grab a helmet and take a whack in the batting cages. It’s at Old Register Road just off the Highway 301 bypass. 38 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

fun runs & 5Ks Statesboro is home to many annual 5K run/walks. Here are a few highlights:

The Chocolate Run — In February, local and area runners get to satisify a sweet tooth while supporting a good cause. The race begins on Georgia Southern’s campus and benefits Open Hearts Community Mission for homeless people in the area. Last year’s race raised a whopping $32,000 for the shelter! And it’s called “Statesboro’s sweetest race” for a reason — chocolate abounds. Color the Campus 5K — The Delta Phi Epsilon sorority at Georgia Southern hosts this annual race where participants, starting out in white clothing, are doused with paint in powder form as they wind their way around campus to help raise awareness and money for cystic fibrosis research. Pink Power Run 5K — Each spring, the Statesboro-Bulloch County Breast Cancer Foundation hosts a 5K race on Georgia Southern’s campus. The annual fundraiser supports the foundation’s efforts to increase the awareness of community members about breast health and to serve patients, survivors and families impacted by breast cancer through educational outreach, patient counseling and professional medical services. At the race, there is usually a photo booth, live music, costume contest and free food, in addition to a color run through pink powder.

SPLASH IN THE BORO

When you break it down, Splash in the Boro is 7.7 million pounds of concrete, 65 tons of rebar, 8,500 feet of pipe and about 800,000 gallons of water. But what it adds up to is tons of summer fun. Splash in the Boro opened in 2004, and more than half a million people have enjoyed the hottest place to cool down every summer since. The facility features several pool areas including an 800-foot lazy river, three slides — two body and one inner tube — and an Olympicsize pool. There are also picnic tables, changing areas and lockers, a gift shop and shaded areas. The two concession stands, Splashy’s Snack Shack and Splashy’s Sandwich Shoppe, offer traditional options like hamburgers, hotdogs and french fries, as well as healthier meals like salads and sandwiches.

It is also the only place in the county you’ll find Dippin’ Dots, a frozen treat in the form of small dots. As a GSU student, you’re eligible for a discounted ticket price. Bulloch County commissioners approved in late 2008 a $4 million expansion of Splash in the Boro. The expansion added three new attractions to the water park in 2010, and the park has seen an increase in attendance because of the additions. They include the Mat Racer, a four-lane, 350-foot-long racing track where Splash guests can race against each other or against the clock, and the Flowrider, which creates a perpetual wave that allows riders to feel the power and acceleration of actually surfing. (There are boogie boards, as well, so you don’t have to be an expert surfer.)

The third added attraction caters to the park’s youngest visitors — a zero-depth spray pool that is a blast for kids who can’t swim yet. The outdoor facility will close after Labor Day weekend, but the Olympic-size pool and therapy pool are enclosed with a bubble dome in October and remain open yearround. Mill Creek Park is located off Highway 24. For more information about the facility along with the park’s schedule and fees, contact the water park at (912) 489-3000 or go to splashintheboro. com.

fishing & hunting Fishing enthusiasts might think they are in paradise when looking for a fishing hole in Bulloch County. Anyone with a fishing license can fish legally along the banks of public rivers or tributaries such as the Ogeechee River, Mill Creek, Little Lotts Creek, Upper Lotts Creek and Lower Lotts Creek. Put a boat in at one of the Ogeechee River’s many landings and enjoy the scenery as you fish. Just make sure you aren’t on private property. Bulloch has many lakes and ponds, and many owners will give permission to fish — as long as you ask and respect the land. Lake Collins, also known as Deloach’s Lake, is west of Portal and borders Candler County. The blackwater lake is fed by a creek that is home to otters, beavers, alligators and more. The lake is privately owned, but landowners and guests have fishing rights. Cypress Lake in southern Bulloch County near Register offers picturesque scenery, plenty of water and pole-bending fish — but most of the lake is private property. Oglesby’s Pond feeds Lake Collins, northeast of Portal. Another popular fishing spot is Simmons Pond off Georgia Highway 46 in the Nevils-Bay Gall area. Fishing rights memberships are available. Bulloch County is chock-full of wildlife there for the hunting, but written permission must be obtained from landowners to make it legal if hunters want to pursue the game. Most of the hunting areas available are private land, but nearby state-owned wildlife management areas such as Tuckahoe in Screven County offer hunting to licensed citizens. Make sure wherever you go, you have a license to hunt or fish, which you can get at several local retailers county-wide.

Bulloch County has two great state parks within easy driving distance. George L. Smith State Park, near Twin City in Emanuel County, is rustic and beautiful, with a 412acre mill pond and 10 miles of canoe trails. Hiking trails take walkers through south Georgia woodlands, where they can explore local flora and fauna, then come back to a lakeside campsite or a cabin. The refurbished Parrish Mill, built in 1880, is a focal point for visitors who enjoy the covered bridge over the dam. The 1,634-acre park boasts 25 tent, trailer and RV sites as well as four rental cottages, picnic shelters, a group shelter and playground facilities. Magnolia Springs State Park, near Millen in Jenkins County, is home to crystal clear springs and is a popular destination for visitors but was once the site of Camp Lawton, a Confederate prison built in 1864. The stockades and guard towers have been replaced with beautiful scenery, but visitors still can see the earthen breastworks and imagine the prison site. The natural springs produce 7 million gallons of water daily, and visitors can enjoy the view from several wooden platforms stretched across the pools. Storyboards scattered around provide historical and educational information about the springs. A wooden bridge carries visitors across the water, providing a bird’s-eye view of local wildlife, and leads to a freshwater aquarium featuring native species of fish. The 1,071-acre park offers playgrounds, a swimming pool and hiking and biking trails, as well as a 28-acre lake.

VOLUNTEER: making the difference   There are as many reasons to volunteer as there are ways to give your time in Statesboro. Nearly 60 local groups actively seek GSU students as volunteers for unpaid jobs. The organizations provide volunteers opportunities to work with various groups, including children, the elderly and even pets. Georgia Southern’s Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement encourages students who want to earn extra skills or find out if their chosen career path is right to volunteer while at school. Organizations listed on the Office of Student Leadership’s website are all eager to get GSU students as volunteers. Opportunities vary among the groups listed on the site. While most are charitable organizations, some have government affiliations, and others are networks of locals who are working toward a particular goal. Students who volunteer do so for many different reasons. The most active volunteers are those who come from homes or communities where volunteering is stressed, but students who are eager to gain job skills before graduation also find volunteering attractive.

In addition to helping you find a career, volunteering can help you meet other students as well as people in the Bulloch County community. The university has helped place hundreds of students in rewarding volunteer positions. Also, while many students find the idea of volunteering rewarding, many visit the office looking to satisfy a legal or class requirement — but they often return long after the requirement is satisfied. GSU encourages volunteering among students. Classes and groups bring in speakers from volunteer groups, and the university allows students to track the number of hours they spend volunteering.

community outreach

Hearts and Hands Clinic — In its fifth year of operation, the clinic continues to provide more services to low-income Bulloch County residents who lack adequate health insurance. After being founded in Son’s Light Fellowship Baptist Church on U.S. Highway 301 South, it moved to its own space, a building at 127 N. College St. in downtown Statesboro. Hearts and Hands provides basic health screenings and dental services for people in need of serious work. And, thanks to a nearly $25,000 grant it received last year from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Coastal Georgia, the clinic provides mammograms.

Bulloch County had the second-highest mortality rate attributed to cancer between 2003 and 2007 in the agency’s service area, according to data compiled by the state in 2010. Between 2003 and 2007, 36 women died of cancer, and 155 cases were diagnosed. For more information about Hearts and Hands and to volunteer, call (912) 681-9519. Open Hearts Community Mission — Community and business leaders gathered with members of the Open Hearts Community Mission’s board of directors in February 2015 to break ground on the property at 39 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where the Statesboro’s first homeless shelter will be built. The shelter’s mission is not simply to provide for the basic needs of the homeless, but to help them get back on their feet. Already, Open Hearts has been doing that by temporarily housing people in need in motels and helping them apply for jobs and otherwise addressing their immediate needs so they can change their circumstances. Those services also include programs to help people obtain their GED diplomas, determine their career skills and get matched with jobs suited for their abilities. The mission, founded four years ago, has served more than 400 people in need. Once it’s open, the shelter is expected to be able to host up to 30 people at a time. There will be separate wings for men and women, along with two family rooms for parents with children.

ASK A STUDENT: What’s your best Georgia Southern memory?

meet a lot of different people from different parts of the world and exchange cultural information.” — Anais Macias, senior

A: “When we won the Sun Belt championship. That was a great experience — everybody just running onto the field and surrounding the team after we just won that game. It was a really good game to go to.”

bleed blue and white

or any sports lover, Statesboro and Georgia Southern University are a perfect fit. From August until May, the Eagles of Georgia Southern don their blue and white to compete in 16 varsity sports. Eagle athletics have started to broaden their footprint around the country over the past couple of years. After more than 20 years in the Southern Conference — which calls Georgia and the Carolinas home — 2014 saw Georgia Southern make the leap into the Sun Belt, which expands west through Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, with outposts as far away as New Mexico and Idaho. A bigger conference with betterfunded athletic departments has forced the Eagles to step up their level of play across all sports, but they already are making themselves right at home.

FOOTBALL In the grand scheme of things, Georgia Southern football is relatively new on the scene. The school’s original team was disbanded during World War II and wasn’t brought back until 1981. But getting a late start hasn’t hurt one bit. The Eagles quickly rose to national power status in the former Division I-AA. Georgia Southern claimed back-to-back national championships on three separate occasions (1985-86, 1989-90, 2000-01) and made the leap up to the Football Bowl Subdivision — the highest level of collegiate play — in 2014. That hasn’t slowed the Eagles at all. Keeping with their tradition of finding immediate success, the Eagles became the first team in history to go undefeated in conference play during their first season as an FBS team. NCAA rules

eagle football — the legend, the legacy BASKETBALL After years of wallowing in the depths of their respective conference standings, both the men’s and women’s teams at Georgia Southern look to be on the rise. Under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Mark Byington, the GS men came within two points of making the NCAA tournament during the 2014–15 season. Last year saw the departure of the majority of that squad, but the Eagles simply reloaded. Georgia Southern figures to enter the 2016–17 campaign with one of the better backcourts in the nation and as a threat to finish high in the Sun Belt standings. Last winter saw the first season at the helm for new women’s coach Kip Drown. With nearly three decades of experience (and winning records) at lower levels, Drown immediately made an impact. While the Eagle ladies fell just short of the conference tournament last season, they added a few additional conference wins and bring plenty of experience back for 2016-17.

Georgia Southern quarterback Favian Upshaw, left, scores on a three-yard run early in the third quarter to give the Eagles the lead for good against Bowling Green during the GoDaddy Bowl. prohibited that team from advancing to the school’s first-ever bowl game, but the 2015 Eagles took care of that, blowing out the Mid American Conference champions from Bowling Green in last season’s GoDaddy Bowl. The Eagles seem to be primed for another successful year in 2016, but will have to do it with a new coach. Former coach Willie Fritz set sail for Tulane in the offseason, paving the way for Tyson Summers, former defensive coordinator at Colorado State and Central Florida, to assume his first head coaching job. Georgia Southern will play one of the tougher schedules in the country, facing four consecutive road games at one point while also paying visits to Georgia Tech and Ole Miss. When the Eagles are at home, fans will enjoy Paulson Stadium — “The Prettiest Little Stadium in America” — and one of the best tailgating atmospheres at any level of college football. 48 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

eagle sports — bleed blue and gold BASEBALL For as dominant as Georgia Southern football has been over the years, the Eagles’ baseball team has been the most consistent winner from year to year. Since taking over the program in 2000, head coach Rodney Hennon has posted a winning record in 16 of his 17 seasons, including five conference tournament championships. The Eagles have also made two trips to the College World Series since becoming a Division I program and can claim an NAIA national championship. Georgia Southern has provided even more quality to an already-loaded Sun Belt Conference that routinely sends multiple teams into the NCAA regionals — college baseball’s version of the postseason. The Sun Belt will be even tougher beginning in 2017 as perennial national power Coastal Carolina joins the conference. Eagle fans will have a front row seat to some of the best baseball in the nation as the 2017 Sun Belt tournament is slated for the Eagles’ home field at J.I. Clements Stadium.

OLYMPIC SPORTS Certain sports dominate the Georgia Southern landscape, depending on the time of year, but there is much more to the Eagles’ athletic culture than touchdowns, slam dunks and home runs. The 2015-16 school year saw some huge leaps forward, especially in women’s sports. The Eagles’ rifle team competed in its second season and broke program records seemingly with each passing week. The Georgia Southern men’s golf program has long been a regional power, but spring of 2016 saw the brand new women’s team exceed all expectations in the tough Sun Belt during its inaugural campaign. The volleyball and softball programs both took huge steps forward, with the softball team seemingly ready to step up into the top tier of the Sun Belt, which is one of the nation’s top softball playing conferences. Some of the first teams to hit the field for the 2016-17 school year will be the men’s and women’s soccer programs, which are both bringing back scores of talent from solid showings last fall.

statesboro sports AROUND TOWN Taking in sports around Statesboro doesn’t have to mean cheering on from the stands. As proud of a sporting legacy that Georgia Southern boasts, there are also plenty of opportunities to get out and play for yourself. Mill Creek Regional Park has competitive flag football leagues running throughout the fall and softball leagues are contested in the spring, summer and fall. A newly-opened disc golf course is one of the better tracks in the area and can be found near the Statesboro airport. And for those looking to run and throw, each spring break weekend brings to town one of the biggest ultimate Frisbee tournaments in the southeast. Finally, Georgia Southern’s golf course is nearing its third year of operation and has garnered plenty of accolades from national magazines. The course is open to the public and offers incredibly friendly rates for Georgia Southern students and employees.

tormenta — a rising storm Statesboro celebrated a new era in local sports this summer as Tormenta FC — the Boro’s new Premier Development League franchise — began its first-ever season. The creation of the club was announced August 2015, and everything from a team name to official colors and uniforms to roster makeup was presented over the following months. Time was of the essence for Tormenta FC’s first team, as many first introductions for teammates came during the opening minutes of their very first practice. But the players hit the ground running, wasting no time in pressuring each other to prove themselves deserving of starting roles on the team. The PDL comprises plenty of talent from collegiate rosters around the nation. That also lends the league to have plenty of international flavor. Tormenta FC is no exception as several foreign players will play key roles this season, including forward Kieran Roberts, a forward who has traveled across the Atlantic to Statesboro by way of Radford University.

Locally Owned & Operated by the Ellis Family Since 1967!

C O M M U W N I T Y

your home for the next four years

e have taken you through all your collegiate needto-knows: arts and entertainment, sports, setting up your utilities, buying your books and other important information. Now we turn our eyes toward Statesboro itself, your home for the next four years. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore your new community, most notably the Step into Statesboro event in the fall (held Saturday, September 10, this year). The event brings new and returning students to the downtown Statesboro area to introduce them to community agencies, local leaders and city history. The Averitt Center’s downtown ghost tours in October are also a great opportuniy to learn a little local lore, as is the annual Tales from the Tomb graveyard tour, hosted by the Bulloch County Historical Society in September. Mark those events on your calendar to hear some of the most interesting stories in the Boro’s history. For

example: Did you know that Statesboro was burned during Sherman’s march to the sea because the wrong person answered a Union officer’s query for directions? True story, and there are lots more where that one came from. Because you’ll be here in Statesboro for the next four years — and maybe longer — it’s a good idea for you to break out of the campus bubble and get involved in your new home. Join community groups. Learn about local politics and do your democratic duty. Visit some of the smaller towns in our area, or venture farther afield to some of the beautiful East Coast cities in the southeast region. There is much to learn, see and love about Statesboro, Bulloch County and the Southeast region in general. Take advantage of your years here and explore this place to the fullest. Plant your roots deep, and before you know it, you won’t even remember a time when Statesboro didn’t feel like home. Welcome to the Boro.

statesboro — local government

election info

At some time during your four years at Georgia Southern, you’ll probably need to get in touch with the local government officials. As a student, the city of Statesboro is the local government you’ll probably deal with the most. If you live off campus, they’ll be the ones to turn on your water, pick up your garbage and give you a ticket if you break the law inside the city limits. Statesboro is the county seat and largest city in Bulloch County with almost 30,000 people. Over the last decade, Statesboro has grown into a shopping, health care, education and employment hub for the region, due in large part to the influence of Georgia Southern. Maybe that’s why so many GSU students decide to stick around after they graduate. Statesboro is governed by a five-member board and a mayor. Council members serve four-year terms, with half the council up for election every two years. Each councilman is elected by district and the mayor is elected by the city as a whole. Daily operations are handled by the city manager. Statesboro provides water, sewer, natural gas and garbage pickup to city residents. You can establish service for these utilities at City Hall on East Main Street. 70 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

A big part of the college experience is tuning in to the world around you, and a great way to do that is to exercise your right to vote. This year is a presidential election year, so don’t miss your chance to participate in the democratic process. If you are voting in your hometown, be sure to apply for an absentee ballot. In order to register to vote in Georgia, you must be a citizen of the United States, a legal resident of Georgia and the county in which you wish to vote and at least 18 years of age by Election Day. Register to vote in the general election in Bulloch County by Oct. 11. Students living on campus or in the apartment complexes near campus vote at the Pittman Park United Methodist Church, located on Fair Road across from GSU.The county redrew its voting districts and added the Pittman Park precinct several years ago in order to make voting more convenient for students. To learn more about Georgia elections or to obtain an online voter registration form, visit the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.state.ga.us/.

HOW TO VOTE • Oct. 5 – Deadline to register to vote in the general election • Nov. 4 – General election • Board of Elections Office: Bulloch County Courthouse (at the Main streets intersection) (912) 764-6502 • Registration forms available at bullochcounty.net

all about bulloch Bulloch County is not only one of Georgia’s largest counties geographically; in 2012, it was also one of the fastest growing in the southern part of the state. Like most communities in Georgia, Bulloch’s roots are in agriculture, but over the last 100 years it has also developed a thriving business community due in part to the presence of Georgia Southern. The county is governed by a seven-member board with representatives elected from two districts, District 1, which is a minority district, and District 2. Two representatives are elected from District 1 and four representatives are elected from District 2. The chairman is elected by the entire county. The board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. and the third Tuesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. in the Community Room of the N. Main Annex Building. The day-to-day operations of the county are handled by the county manager, Tom Couch.

Home to Four Cities

In addition to Statesboro, there are three other incorporated cities in Bulloch County — Brooklet, Portal and Register. With just over 1,300 residents, Brooklet is a quiet community located about 10 miles east of Statesboro. Known for its annual Peanut Festival, it offers quiet country living with all the amenities of a thriving community. Downtown has a variety of shops including several antique stores and a large furniture store. Brooklet City Hall is located at 104 Church St. and can be reached at (912) 842-2137. Just 14 miles west of Statesboro, the small town of Portal offers the charm of a quiet, neighbororiented community. Portal is best known for its rich agricultural heritage, which is celebrated each fall with the Catface Country Turpentine Festival. Portal City Hall is located at 27209 Hwy. 80 West and can be reached at (912) 865-2566. Register is only 15 minutes from either Metter or Statesboro, and the drive is worth the peaceful, friendly atmosphere you’ll find in this town of only 160 people. Think of it as a local Stars Hollow. The Register Town Hall is located on Foster Road in a historic schoolhouse and can be reached at (912) 488-2424. 72 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

historic communities

Until the 1940s, rural towns and communities dominated Bulloch County. But with the rise of the railroad and modern highways, many of these towns declined over the years. However, many of these historic communities still exist, at least in name, and their residents find them peaceful places to live. Stilson is located west of Brooklet and was once one of the busiest stops on the S&S Railway. Hopeulikit was named when the owner of a local dance hall decided to hold a contest to name the community. Reportedly, one of the entries had a handwritten note at the bottom which read “Hope U Like It.” The judges did, and the name still marks the area on Highway 25 north of Statesboro. The Sinkhole District earned its name 150 years ago when a sawmill in southwest Bulloch slowly sank into the ground one evening. When the employees returned the next morning, the mill was gone. Clito, five miles north of Statesboro, thrived in the early 20th century by becoming a stop on the Dover Railroad Line. Leefield, located seven miles northeast of Brooklet, takes its name from the Lee family which once owned the land set on a high bluff. It built up around the railroad, but with the decline of rail service, Leefield’s economy also declined. Nevils is still a lively community located in the southern part of the county. It has its own elementary school and is also home to many shops. Emit, located five miles southeast of Statesboro, was named after Emit Anderson, a former postmaster. At one time Emit was under consideration to become the county seat of Bulloch, but some wealthy farmers pushed to have Statesboro named. Emit today is a quiet farming community.

savannah Savannah’s more than just a name — it’s the closest “bigger” city to Statesboro, and a place that many students head to when they’re looking for fun that Bulloch County just can’t provide. It’s a 45 minute drive down Interstate 16, so it’s close enough to head to whenever you like. If you want to dance the night away in some of the Southeast’s hottest clubs, they’re in Savannah — from country music to salsa, with techno and rock in between. The best way to find out who’s playing where in the ever-changing Savannah club scene is to pick up a copy of Connect Savannah while you’re there, or check out their website at connnectsavannah.com, where they keep the most up-to-date listing of what’s going on in the clubs. Be warned, though — Savannah’s changed their laws, and as of March 1, 2006, anyone under 21 can’t enter a bar, even just to see a band. That doesn’t mean the hopping River Street district is completely out of the question for younger folks, though. If you’re looking for good food, the area around River Street offers lots of specialty restaurants and unique, out-of-the-way places to eat. Uptown, closer to the malls, you’ll find all the familiar chain restaurants, however. If you’re looking for a more quiet, one-of-a-kind and romantic date atmosphere, you may want to look at a Savannah River Boat Cruise, with premier dining

and entertainment. Daily cruises include sightseeing cruises, luncheons and even the occasional murder mystery cruise for amateur sleuths. Check out their schedule online at savannahriverboat.com. Sports fans can catch great minor league baseball action with the Savannah Sand Gnats and their brandnew team, the Savannah Bananas. For ticket information, call (912) 351-9150. One of Savannah’s most popular musical venues is the Civic Center. Big-name acts perform stadiumstyle in the main arena, but there’s also the smaller, more intimate Johnny Mercer Theater inside the center. For ticket information and event listings, check out savannahcivic.com. Like history? Savannah’s got plenty of it. One highlight of the city’s history is its many ghost stories, and you can hop a tour nightly to see the city’s spookier spots (savannahtours.us). If more conventional history’s your thing, there’s nearby Fort Pulaski and Fort Jackson, historical sites that date back from before the Civil War. For Fort Pulaski info, call (912) 786-5787; Fort Jackson, (912) 232-3945. A sand-filled day at the beach is also closer than you might think. Tybee Island, located about an hour from Statesboro, provides plenty of attractions to escape the ho-hum of everyday life. Clean white beaches are waiting for those who want to spend the day, and plenty of hotels are there for a weekend escape. You can pick up a bit of history on Tybee at the Historical Light Station and Museum. Climb to the top of the lighthouse to capture an exciting view all the way to Hilton Head Island.

Coca-Cola and learn about the birth of one of the most recognizable brands in the word. Take the time to taste some of the different soft drinks from around the world. You can also learn about CNN while in the city. Stone Mountain is the perfect place to have a picnic as well as taking the time to trek up the largest exposed piece of granite in the world. Be sure to check out the laser light shows at night. Six Flags over Georgia is perfect for those who love amusement parks. From roller coasters to water rides, Six Flags has something for everyone.

atlanta From sports to history to entertainment to cultural activities, Atlanta offers something for everyone. At a little more than three hours away, the “Gateway to the South” is close enough to spend the day or the weekend and still make it back for class. One of Atlanta’s newest attractions is the Georgia Aquarium. Be sure to plan to spend several hours there as it is the largest aquarium in the world. Completed in 2005, it features more than 100,000 animals and 500 different species. The 500,000-square-foot facility has more than 8 million gallons of fresh and salt water. The aquarium sits on 9.5 acres adjacent to another of the city’s attractions, the Centennial Olympic Park. The park was the site of the 1996 Olympic Games and concerts are routinely held there. But if there isn’t any music, enjoy the Olympic Ring Fountain. For the sports fan, Atlanta has teams from three major sports leagues — baseball, football and basketball. From the Braves and Falcons to the Hawks, Atlanta offers something for fans of any sport. Also, the Atlanta Motor Speedway hosts a NASCAR race each year. Margaret Mitchell enthusiasts will want to check out the Gone With The Wind museum, which has the largest collection of movie memorabilia. Also, visit the Margaret Mitchell house and museum and see the typewriter on which the classic novel was written. The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Site offers guests information about the life and death of the man at the center of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Also while in Atlanta, be sure to visit the World of 74 • Welcome to the Boro 2016

jacksonville, fl. Jacksonville, the largest city in Florida, sits near the top of the state like a Welcome Wagon for travelers from Georgia. About 25 miles south of the Georgia border, Jacksonville is in the First Coast region of northeast Florida and is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River. Jacksonville is home to dozens of events. The Art Walk, a monthly outdoor art festival on the first Wednesday of each month, is sponsored by Downtown Vision, Inc., an organization that works to promote artistic talent and venues on the First Coast. One of the most popular sporting events is the annual Gate River Run, the US National Championship 15K since 1994 and largest 15K race in the country. The 9.3 mile race has taken place every March since 1977. The Jacksonville Jazz Festival is held every spring and is the second-largest jazz festival in the nation. Springing the Blues is a free outdoor blues festival held in Jacksonville Beach, in April.
