Boro Apartments
I
n the past several years, GSU has added new residential buildings to its list of available on-campus housing to keep up with the university’s constant growth. Georgia Southern officials have said that they are constantly looking for new ways to keep up with the growth of the student body. The goal, they say, is to have between 25 and 30 percent of undergraduates living on campus. In keeping with that philosophy, Campus Club apartments on Lanier Drive was purchased by the university, and made the transition to oncampus housing in 2012. Centennial Place, which opened in 2009, houses just over 1,000 students, and is adjacent to the Russell Union and Landrum Dining Commons. Centennial features a Tech Corner and College Optical Express. Freedom’s Landing, located next to Paulson Stadium, is also a highend housing option for those wishing to live on campus. In addition to those options, students can also choose from Eagle Village, University Villas, Southern Pines and Southern Courtyard, all of which are high end. Older dorms include Kennedy Hall and Watson Hall, which are also on par with housing on any campus in the state. Many of the apartments have kitchens and in-apartment laundry facilities, private bathrooms and individual bedrooms. Many also have pool access. If living off-campus is your choice, you’ll find a wide variety of living arrangements. The options include single bedroom communities,
as well as multi-bedroom apartments. Nearly all leasing companies in the Boro provide separate leases for each room of the apartment, so that you don’t have to worry about splitting rent or other bills. This prevents you from having to worry about what happens if someone else fails to pay up. Some apartment complexes offer residents the option of having furnished apartments for an additional monthly fee, while many offer both furnished and unfurnished choices to fit any lifestyle — and student — that comes their way. While the apartments near GSU are geared toward young college students, they offer adult perks too. Pools, computer labs, gym facilities and 24-hour security are among the most attractive amenities. Those same services are available to students who live on campus, but usually with more restrictions and guidance from the school. Apartments are open year-round, unlike university housing, which closes during the summer months. Most apartment leases in Statesboro are 12-month leases — something to think about when you are signing because of its commitment through the following summer. Many complexes also offer “all-inclusive” billing, which covers rent and utilities at a flat fee. They also have special roommate matching programs. Apartment complexes have several amenities, and students don’t have to worry about mowing lawns, damage to apartments or fund-

ing repairs. Like everywhere else, pet policies differ from apartment to apartment, so be sure you check out pet policies prior to purchasing a pet or planning to bring your pet with you. Rent at apartment complexes can run from $400-$1,200 per month, with a 12-month lease being the standard. Deposits range from $100 (during some specials) to the full price of rent. At many complexes, students must have an adult (someone with verifiable employment) sign a guarantee for the apartment on the day the lease is signed. Leases are hard to break, and school officials say students should think long and hard before entering the legally binding agreement. However, the apartment complexes in Statesboro are very accommodating and quick to answer any concerns a student may have. Local realtors say more and more parents are purchasing houses or townhomes for their children going to GSU — particularly if siblings are attending at the same time. Purchasing gives parents a tax write-off for the interest. Plus, moving a roommate in a house to help with bills and pay rent earns money that goes straight toward the owner’s mortgage. For the renter, renting is normally a nostrings-attached introduction to home ownership. It gives an individual a feel for home life without the headaches of maintenance or repair work — something the landlord typically covers.
ASK A STUDENT:
What advice would you give for students looking for a place to live?
A: “Make sure the walls aren’t
ridiculously thin. Also, don’t be awed by the clubhouse. Tour a bunch of places and talk to people that live there because everyone wants something different.”
— Jessie Johns

Workin’ On Your Fitness
For Georgia Southern students who enjoy sports and exercise, the Recreation Activity Center located on Georgia Southern’s campus is the place for you! The RAC is paid for by your student fees so students are able to use equipment within the facility. Located on Akins Boulevard, the 215,000-square foot complex is home to a wide variety of indoor and outdoor sporting activities. In addition to your standard workout equipment like treadmills, weights and stationery exercise bikes, the RAC also houses an Olympic size indoor swimming pool, an outdoor swimming pool, a rock climbing wall and a combative and dance studio. For those who are looking for group exercise, you will find that the RAC offers fitness classes that are taught by certified group instructors. Classes offered range from yoga and Pilates to Zumba, boot camp and barre and tone. In addition to group fitness classes, the RAC also offers intramural sports activities for students who enjoy playing group sports. While the RAC is the place to be when it comes to servicing student fitness needs, there are also off campus fitness options as well. For students who live off campus in apartments, a great deal of off campus housing offers personal gyms for their residents, which you may find to be much more convenient, especially as the toll of the semester and last minute assignments begin to burden your schedule. Another off-campus option is 180 Fitness which is located on Fair Road in the shopping center behind Zaxby’s and Wendy’s. This facility offers a variety of fitness equipment for pa-
trons and offers a wide variety of group fitness classes, including body blast, spin and Zumba, as well as an assortment of others Statesboro is also home to Snap Fitness, which is located on Brannen Street. The gym offers patrons 24/7 access to patrons in search of a good workout and staffs a team of personal trainers. For women looking for a more exclusive workout experience, Statesboro is home to LOA Fitness, a women’s only gym. Located on U.S. Highway 80, LOA offers patrons access to standard fitness equipment as well as group classes and access to nutritional counseling. A childcare area is also located within the facility. If you’re tired of fighting the big crowds at the RAC or the other commercial gyms or simply not seeing the results you need, Yoga on Vine, located downtown, and Crossfit Boro, at 1189 Sarahlyn Lane across from Splash in the Boro, offer training services that provide a more targeted approach to getting fit. For more information, visit the gyms’ websites at yogaonvine. com and crossfitboro.com.

Buying Books
As tempting as it may be to want to forgo book buying altogether in favor of more pleasurable pursuits, the sad fact of the matter is that you’ve come to Statesboro to learn and one necessary expense in college is buying textbooks. For incoming freshman, the process of looking for textbook retailers might seem scary, but here is a helpful guide to get you started on your journey without breaking the bank. When you register for classes, your textbooks will be listed in a tab under the MyGeorgiaSouthern portal. This tab will lead you to the University Store which will highlight the price of the textbook your professor has listed as a requirement for their classes and will also provide you with the ISBN number. While it is more convenient to buy your textbooks from the University Store due to its close proximity to campus, there are other online options available that may offer textbook selections at a cheaper price. Before making the plunge and buying or renting textbooks from the university store, be sure to check sites like Amazon and Chegg that may offer the books at a cheaper rate. Before buying textbooks through any channel, look for the textbook used to try to cut costs. If there are no used textbooks available, shoot your professor an email to ask them if they will permit you to buy a previous edition of the textbook to cut the costs. Another pro tip for incoming students is to ask your professor if they permit the use of eBooks, which are also cheaper than physical texts (be warned, though, many teachers do not allow the use of technological devises in the classroom, but the e-texts are helpful and convenient for reading on the go because they are available online at all times after logging onto the textbook provider’s website). If shopping or renting online for physical texts, make sure to check with the retailer to ensure that texts will arrive in time for the second day of classes (the first day is usually always syllabus day) so you do not fall behind. In addition to that, if renting a textbook, make sure to mark the date when the textbooks need to be returned to prevent accruing late fees. Lastly, be sure to treat your books well. Try to avoid seriously damaging books, or ripping or removing pages. At the end of each semester, the University Store advertises book buyback which allows students to receive cash payment for select textbooks.

L
et’s be honest: Being able to watch the new seasons of Game of Thrones is no longer a “negotiable” for your life. You know what else is a non-negotiable? Showers. Now that you’re an adult out on your own, you’re responsible for making sure you have access to all the basic necessities, including internet so you can download Game of Thrones (not that we’re advocating for that) and city water so you can bathe (we are definitely advocating for that). You’ve got a whole “honey do” list but no “honey” to “do” it for you, and nothing cripples a burgeoning sense of maturity and independence quicker than having to ask your mom to help you get your toilet to flush. Doing all the research on your own can get kind of overwhelming — especially if you haven’t set up a wireless network yet. If you
can’t look up the numbers of the internet providers, who you gonna call? (If you answered “Ghostbusters,” you might just want to go back home.) Luckily for you, we have compiled a handy little guide here with all the local television, internet, phone and electricity providers, as well as the city information to help you set up your water and trash services. Additionally, we have an emergency guide in case you get in a jam and a “legal tips” section in case you get in a jam that’s your fault. We’ve also included a section for other local amenities and services, including the post office, driver’s services and all the tiny things that add up to functioning as an independent, responsible adult. Or so they tell us. Now, go get your utilities set up so you can happily return to your regularly scheduled Netflix binge-watching session.

Drivers who don’t pay within 90 days risk license suspension. Monies raised from the super-speeder fines assist funding Georgia’s network of trauma care hospitals.
Legal Tips
Fireworks are now legal in Georgia, but be sure to abide by county and city rules so you don’t get into trouble or upset your neighbors. Liquor is sold by the drink in bars and restaurants, but it isn’t available by the bottle in Bulloch County. You won’t be able to legally purchase an alcoholic drink after 1 a.m. (midnight on Sundays), and packaged beer and wine sales end at midnight (11:30 p.m. on Sundays). “To-go cups” are a no-no. So is having an open container of alcohol in your vehicle. And if you get plastered at a local establishment (or at home), please don’t climb behind the wheel. Local judges aren’t fond of drinking and driving. If you throw a party, make sure you are not so loud your neighbors will be disturbed. And if they are disturbed and you have illegal drugs or underage drinkers at your party, police will know and people will be arrested. The best bet? Invite the neighbors, and make sure you break no laws.

Music in the Boro
You’re going to be surprised at the quality of musical entertainment you’ll find in Statesboro. Local musicians can often be found on stage, sharpening their performance skills and building a loyal fan base. There are also nationally known recording artists on the Boro stages. The University Programming Board has worked to bring some big names to Statesboro for on campus concerts, including Lady Antebellum, Kristian Bush of Sugarland, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and The Band Perry. The Averitt Center for the Arts stage hosted the Pam Tillis Trio this year. Country not your thing? Artists like Migos, 3 Doors Down, Ciara, Ludacris and The Fray have also been featured. The Boro has also played host to artists like Corey Smith, David Nail and Arlo Guthrie in recent years. If you’re into specialty acts, there’s a wide variety of talent that comes to Statesboro as well. Each year, well-known Irish musician and singer Harry O’Donoghue perTyler Hammond Band forms in the Boro as part of “Celtic Christmas,” a good time for everyone who’s Irish or who wishes they were. Earlier this year, Kenny Brawner performed a mind-blowing Ray Charles tribute at the Averitt. Brawner sang many of Charles’ best known hits, and brought the legend’s story to life. But one of the best things about Statesboro is the live music scene. Most every weekend you’ll find local and regional acts on stage at a number of venues in the Boro. South City Tavern, Cowboys, Gnat’s Landing, GATA’s and Dingus Magees fill their stages with shows featuring local, regional and even national acts. New to this scene is the BiRDHAUS, which has been called a breath of fresh air. Founded by local band BiRDPERSON, the BiRDHAUS is unlike any other venue in the area — it’s likely you won’t find your favorite cover band playing there. Artists are encouraged to play original music. Genre isn’t a focus either, as shows feature multiple artists of varying genres. But here’s the catch: the location isn’t publicized. You have to know somebody who knows somebody... But if you keep your eyes and ears open, you’ll find some of the greatest music and good times a stone’s throw from campus.

Acts to Watch...
Music in the Boro
Chris Mitchell: The former longhaired rocker cut his hair but hasn’t mellowed at all in more than 15 years of shaking Statesboro venues. Chris also maintains a guitar studio and is the owner of Pladd Dot Music, which offers private music lessons to local students. Oh, yeah — he designs his own line of guitars, too. Piano: This trio began as a side project between members of Those Cats and Francis Marion & The Crocodiles, but it has since evolved into its own entity, which features Michael Kerr (guitar, vocals), Matt Litt (bass, vocals) and Scott Underwood. Though they’re a young group, they’re already starting to carve out a place and establish a following in the local scene, working their way into people’s hearts with their self-described “devilishly heartbreaking blues.” Ten Mile Creek: Just some “good ol’ boys makin’ noise,” this former quintet has settled into a four-man lineup: David Hallman (bass), Samarie Palmer (drums, vocals), Brendan Sapp (guitar, vocals) and Gill Postell (keyboard, vocals). This group continues to treat audiences to live shows right here in Statesboro — and they never disappoint on stage.
Ten Mile Creek The Orange Constant: Despite their wide-ranging influences and musical preferences, this quartet has mastered and refined the technique of seamlessly incorporating a variety of genres into one song, creating a distinct and electrifying sound that leaves their audiences wanting more. A favorite in the local music scene, this band has established a solid foothold in the area and is on the verge of their first album release. Collin Middleton: A business student at Georgia Southern, Collin has become a regular on the music scene. He’s a singer/songwriter who’s appeared all over the Boro, and this up-and-comer is one you won’t want to miss.
ASK A STUDENT:
Where is the best place to hang out in the Boro?
A: “I would say Eagle Creek, Gnats
and Dingus. If you go out with friends, it’s a fun time and it’s a great atmosphere to hang around for a long time.”
— Jozsef Papp The Orange Constant

Downtown Arts Scene
No matter whether you are a serious artist or just someone who loves the arts, you’ll find something to enjoy in the heart of Statesboro’s arts scene, the Averitt Center for the Arts. From performances and art shows, to classes and studio space, to volunteer and employment opportunities, the Averitt has it all. And it’s all in beautiful downtown Statesboro. The Averitt Center, home to the Emma Kelly Theater, opened in September 2004. The Averitt is located in the old Bank of Statesboro, and the building, built in 1911, is a beautiful part of the downtown landscape. The Emma Kelly Theater is located inside the building that served as Statesboro’s movie theater from 1936 to 1982. The buildings underwent a $4.3 million renovation under the watchcare of the city and the county. The center is named after Hal Averitt, former Statesboro mayor, who envisioned the project. The theater is named for Emma Kelly, “The Lady of 6,000 Songs,” a Bulloch County native. Among her many accomplishments were her encylopedic knowledge of popular music by the late Johnny Mercer, and a cameo role in the 1994 movie, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Formerly known as the Georgia Theater, the theater opened for business in 1936, featuring steam heat and a coffee shop in the lobby. It was also one of the first air-conditioned buildings in Statesboro. In March 2015, the Averitt Center opened its newest facility at 41 West Main Street. Including the Jurijs Safonovs Grande Dance
Studio, the Mical Whitaker Black Box Theater and the Helen Rosengart Gallery, the Center for Performing Arts represents Phase I of the Averitt Center’s master plan. Phase II involved the renovation of a building on East Vine Street that previously housed the dance classes and now known as the Roxie Remley Center for Fine Arts. Phase III will be the Thurman Lanier Center Center for Art Education, which will include a fine arts gallery and support spaces for the gallery and theater, as well as additional classrooms and a small stage for chorale and musical rehearsals. In addition to constantly rotating gallery exhibits featuring artists from throughout the country, the Averitt Center for the Arts always has a full season of stage shows featuring a wide range of entertainment. From the rollicking good time of Always...Patsy Cline to South Pacific to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the stage at the Averitt is always filled with talent. There are also touring out-of-town acts for one-night-only events, which can run the gamut from live music, improv comedy and spoken word artists. But the Averitt Center is not just about bringing art to the community: It also prioritizes teaching the arts to the people of Statesboro. Their art classes are for all ages, whether you want to learn to act, sing, dance, paint, sculpt or play a classical instrument. Private instruction is also available from the Averitt Center’s talented and experienced staff members.

GSU Performing Arts Center
The Performing Arts Center at Georgia Southern University is a modern performance facility, featuring an 825-seat theater complete with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. Since opening its doors in 2002, the PAC has served the GSU and regional communities by providing world-class performing arts, music and dance as well as educational programs. In addition to presenting a season of professional touring shows, the PAC also hosts events for campus departments, student groups and community organizations. Past seasons have included Broadway musicals, international acts, celebrity impersonators, professional ballet and dance companies and
world-renowned musicians. It is also the annual host of Statesboro’s biggest nonprofit fundraiser, Dancing with the Statesboro Stars, in October. The PAC’s 2017–2018 season is looking as exciting as ever, and if past seasons are anything to go by, you’re going to want to get your backside in one of the theater’s 825 seats. Tickets for Georgia Southern students are always $10 with a valid Eagle ID. GSU Center for Art & Theatre
GSU’s Center for Art & Theatre is a public venue for performances, art exhibitions and events. It is the home of the Black Box Theatre, Betty Foy Sanders Georgia Artists Collection and Smith Callaway Banks Southern Folk Art Collection. The Theater and Performance students at the CAT deliver performances far beyond what one might expect from undergraduate performers. Under the direction of professors Lisa Abbott, Nick Newell and other guest directors, the CAT’s shows consistently defy expectations for student productions, with an incredible ability to shock and amaze. The Black Box Theatre in which they perform is a versatile, intimate space, and each new set is a borderline magical transformation. Because they are a college group, the directors are able to take on more challenging, controversial shows that other venues might shy from, and they turn those scripts into award-winning performances. Earlier this year, the group brought the awardwinning musical Chicago to the stage. The production perfectly showcased the triple-threat talents of many of GSU’s finest students, as well as outstanding choreography. The CAT is also the home for the Wham! Bam! Play Slam! an annual play festival held in August that allows playwrights to showcase their work. Directors and casts are randomly chosen, and playwrights have just a day to prepare, and the productions hit the stage that evening.

Ogeechee International History Film Festival
In March, Statesboro was the site of history in the making — literally — as the Ogeechee International Film Festival made its debut as the very first film festival in the United States dedicated solely to historical films. The festival is the brainchild of GSU Associate Professor of History Dr. Michael Scott Van Wagenen. It was organized by the Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Statesboro Herald and Georgia Southern. Filmmakers from all over the world were invited to submit films on a variety of historical subjects, with the condition being that submissions contain valid historical research and promote the accuracy of historical facts. Two of those submissions came from GSU graduates, who both took film class with Van Wagenen and produced a documentary about the history of downtown Statesboro. This inspired them to make their own films. Alumna Katherine Connor submitted a film about Fort Pulaski, a project that took more than a year to complete. The 25-minute documentary follows the history of Fort Pulaski and highlights why the National Park Service is so important. Alumnus Daniel Hancock focused his film, “Bonaventure: From Plantation to Monument” on the Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia, a project that he hopes will get audiences interested in the cemetery and the history surrounding it. The festival also debuted “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive,” a film by Boston-based filmmaker Eric Strange, who was a featured speaker during the event.Statesboro residents were among the first to see the film, which was also premiered on PBS as a part of the American Masters series.

Arts Fest on Sweetheart Circle 30 • Welcome to the Boro 2017
Early spring brings an explosion of color to Georgia Southern University’s Sweetheart Circle. As reliably as the flowers bloom, ArtsFest returns one Saturday in April, bringing residents of Bulloch and surrounding counties a chance to express themselves and splatter themselves and even clothe themselves in art. Open to all ages, the festival attracts many children and their parents, but college students also participate as volunteers, artists and attendees. The 35-year tradition began as a project of the university’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art. But the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department has kept ArtsFest thriving the past two Aprils with support from sponsors, the university and a small army of volunteers. Typically 30 or more Art Stops are free to the public, as are music and dance performed by mostly local groups on the community stage. ArtsFest also features an Artists Market. The 36th annual festival is set for April 14, 2018. Follow “ArtsFest” on Facebook or visit www.bullochrec. com/artsfest for more information.

Don’t you wish someone was keeping track of all of this for you? Oh, wait. Someone is. Connect Statesboro has been covering the arts, entertainment and culture scene in Statesboro since 2005. Connect provides coverage of upcoming concerts, stage performances, festivals and visiting artists. It also gives you a backstage peek at the artists and entertainers who make Statesboro’s culture scene tick. Main Street Farmers Market
We know what you’re thinking: “Why is the farmers market in the entertainment and culture section?” Answer: If you’re reading this guide, you are most likely a millennial, and farmers markets are part of millennial culture. Don’t even try to pretend it isn’t true. In all seriousness, the Main Street Statesboro Farmers Market is an excellent place to visit and a beloved staple of downtown life. Every Saturday from April through November, visitors to Charlie Olliff Square behind Sea Island Bank find fresh, local food and live entertainment from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Saturday morning market draws nearly 1,100 visitors each week and is home to more than 45 vendors selling fresh produce, meats, dairy products, plants and many unique crafts from Bulloch and surrounding counties. Locals aren’t the only ones who understand the Main Street Farmers Market is something special. Last year, The Daily Meal ranked it No. 62 in its “101 Best Farmers Markets in America” article, and Deep South Magazine placed it among “10 of the South’s Best Farmers Markets.” Not bad for a little town. The market accepts credit and debit cards to make shopping easier, and they can accept SNAP/ EBT amounts up to $25 per week. They even have their own farmers market app, which you can download from the Apple App Store. For more information, contact the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority at (912) 7647227 or visit statesborofarmersmarket.com.

First Fridays
If you’re looking for some fun on a Friday night — and you want that fun to be free — look no further than First Friday in downtown Statesboro. First Fridays have become a Boro tradition, and locals look forward to coming downtown each month to visit with local merchants, shop and enjoy special events. Many of the merchants stay open late, and offer specials and refreshments. There are also street vendors who provide homemade crafts, snacks and fine art pieces. Art by regional and local artists will be on display, and many of the galleries offer refreshments as well. The event is organized each month by the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority, and each one follows a different theme. Two of the most popular are Scare on the Square, in October, and the Holiday Celebration, in December. Activities at First Friday are free unless otherwise indicated. There are often items for sale, so bring some cash for some great local merchandise and art. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair
Each October, the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair brings throngs of people to Statesboro for a week of great family fun. There are all sorts of activities to enjoy as part of the fair, including the Miss Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair Pageant, livestock entries, home arts and crafts, farm produce, canning and baking competition, community and club exhibits and fine art. There’s even a parade and a scarecrow contest. And the rides — there are rides for those seeking something tame, and there are rides for the thrillseekers among us. You’ll want to come to the fair on an empty stomach, because there will also be plenty of food vendors on hand, selling everything from cotton candy to candy apples, Italian sausages and funnel cakes. There are also local restaurants in hand, as well as church groups and other organizations, who set up booths with homebaked goods, chicken and dumplings, chili and fresh fried pork rinds. The Statesboro Kiwanis Club also sets up a Pancake House, offering fresh griddle cakes, sausange and old-fashioned cane and maple syrups. There’s also a Barbecue Hut, offered by The Circle K, offering some of the

best barbecue around. You’ll also find live entertainment, featuring everything from Elvis impersonators to gospel groups to escape artists. You can also attend one of several livestock shows held each night during the fair, where local youths compete for top prizes with sheep, hogs and cattle. If you like, you can casually stroll among the exhibit areas, where local agencies, organizations and businesses display their wares and promote their services, or check out the 4-H exhibit, where students show off their work. If you’re feeling nostalgic, you can wander through the historic Aldrich house and outbuildings. In the Heritage Village, you can see how corn is ground into meal, watch how a blacksmith works, and visit an authentic country store. At least one night of the week, the Kiwanis Club gives free admission to students with a valid college ID. The 2016 Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair is scheduled for October 16–21, located — as always — at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds off Highway 67. Go online at www.kiwanisogeecheefair.org for more information and schedules.
Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo
One of the most popular events in town is the Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo. Thousands have packed the fairgrounds for each of the first seven years, so make plans early if you want to catch the 2018 edition. The rodeo proved to be a big hit right from the start, with two sold-out shows in 2011. The second event expanded to three shows — Friday night and Saturday afternoon and evening — all drawing large crowds. In 2013, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club cut back to two nighttime shows, but added seating to accommodate the crowds. You can expect the rodeo to be a fixture at the fairgrounds for many years to come. The International Professional Rodeo Association-sanctioned event attracts an international field of competitors. This year’s version drew cowboys and cowgirls from all over the world, including Chile and Canada. The locals stepped up to the saddle, too. The rodeo features several contests — some of which have a lighter atmosphere than others, such as steer dressing and the kids’ calf scramble. Steer dressing requires teams of three adults, with at least one female, to catch and dress a steer
with a scarf, shorts and two socks. It sounds (and looks) silly, but winning teams received $100 cash, a $50 gift certificate from AgriSupply and meal vouchers from McAllister’s Deli. The 2018 rodeo will be held at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds in April. No boots or cowboy hats required — just come out for a good time and a favorite Statesboro tradition.

Parks & Rec
Mill Creek Park
Whether it’s volunteering or participating in a sport, students can find plenty of opportunities to get involved in the community through the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department. Flag football, basketball, softball, wiffleball and soccer are just a few of the sports offered during the year. You can form your own team or check with the rec department for a list of teams looking for members. Many students also get involved by working with the children, either as coaches or volunteers with the after-school programs, which begin in August.
Located off Highway 24 just a few miles from campus, Mill Creek Regional Park is Bulloch County’s main park. With 155 acres, Mill Creek offers numerous playing fields, picnic pavilions, two playgrounds and a scenic lake with a paved walking path. There is also a 1.25-mile trail where you can jog, skate or just walk your dog. If tennis is your sport, Mill Creek Park boasts a 10-court tennis complex — complete with pro shop. The park is also home to Splash in the Boro, a water park featuring several pools, slides and a lazy river. On July 4th, Mill Creek hosts an Independence Day celebration — the Firecracker Fest — with contests, live music and one of the best fireworks displays in southeastern Georgia.
Directions to Mill Creek Regional Park
From campus: Take Fair Road south to the 301 bypass (Veterans Memorial Parkway); turn left and go through two traffic lights; at the third light, make a right turn on Hwy. 24; go about 1 mile; the park is on the right. www.bullochrec.com

Walking Paths One of the nicest paths to walk, jog, bike or skate along in Statesboro, the Willie McTell Trail — named in honor of legendary blues guitarist “Blind” Willie McTell — is a convenient way to get from campus to downtown. At just over a mile, the path stretches from Triangle Park on East Main Street to the northeast corner of campus on Fair Road. The smooth, wide path is lighted and landscaped and offers bike racks at both ends. Another popular trail, the S&S Greenway offers riders and pedestrians nearly 3 miles of pavement stretching from downtown to the city’s limits. The 2.7-mile pathway begins and ends at trailheads located on Gentilly Road and the intersection of Burkhalter and Pretoria Rushing roads. The trail is maintained by Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department, and features landscaping, lighting, signage and bathrooms (at trailheads). The path runs behind the Statesboro Crossing shopping plaza, under the Veterans Memorial Parkway and over Cawana Road, where it continues along Railroad Bed Road to the intersection of Burkhalter and Pretoria Rushing roads. Parks officials hope eventually to stretch the trail to Brooklet, about 7 miles from Statesboro.
Golf If golf is your game, you have some options to choose from locally. The private course at Forest Heights Country Club on Country Club Road has an 18-hole course, pro shop, driving range and practice green. It’s also the home of the Schenkel Invitational, one of college golf’s premier events. Georgia Southern Golf Course opened to the public in 2013. It’s located off of Golf Club Road about 5 miles outside of Statesboro. Students can schedule a tee time using their Eagle ID. Hackers Golf Park, ranked as one of the nation’s top 100 driving ranges, has a little bit of everything, including a lighted driving range, practice green and pro shop as well as a fun miniature golf course. If golf’s not your thing, grab a helmet and take a whack in the batting cages. It’s at Old Register Road just off the Highway 301 bypass. 38 • Welcome to the Boro 2017
Fun Runs, 5Ks Statesboro is home to many annual 5K run/walks. Here are a few highlights: The Chocolate Run — In February, local and area runners get to satisify a sweet tooth while supporting a good cause. The race begins on Georgia Southern’s campus and benefits Open Hearts Community Mission for homeless people in the area. Last year’s race raised a whopping $32,000 for the shelter! And it’s called “Statesboro’s sweetest race” for a reason — chocolate abounds. Color the Campus 5K — The Delta Phi Epsilon sorority at Georgia Southern hosts this annual race where participants, starting out in white clothing, are doused with paint in powder form as they wind their way around campus to help raise awareness and money for cystic fibrosis research. Pink Power Run 5K — Each spring, the Statesboro-Bulloch County Breast Cancer Foundation hosts a 5K race on Georgia Southern’s campus. The annual fundraiser supports the foundation’s efforts to increase the awareness of community members about breast health and to serve patients, survivors and families impacted by breast cancer through educational outreach, patient counseling and professional medical services. At the race, there is usually a photo booth, live music, costume contest and free food, in addition to a color run through pink powder.

Splash in the Boro
Since Splash in the Boro Family Waterpark and Aquatics Center opened in 2004, more than half a million people have enjoyed the hottest place to cool down each summer. A $5.7 million expansion, scheduled to debut in June 2017, adds a giant wave pool to the list of attractions. The facility already features several pool areas including an 800-foot lazy river, three slides — two body and one inner tube — and two lane-pools. There is also a mat racer, a four-lane, 350-footlong racing track where Splash guests can race against each other or against the clock, and the FlowRider, which creates a perpetual wave that allows riders to feel the power and acceleration of actually surfing. (There are boogie boards, as well, so you don’t have to be an expert surfer). If you have little ones, take note: Splash in the Boro also offers a zero-depth spray pool that is a blast for kids who can’t swim yet. There are also picnic tables, changing areas and lockers, a gift shop and shaded areas. Three concession stands offer traditional summer fun fare such as hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza and french fries, as well as more health-conscious options such as sub sandwiches. Kids of all ages can find ice cream treats, such as the
popular Dippin’ Dots, at Splash in the Boro. As a Georgia Southern University, Ogeechee Technical College or East Georgia State College current student or staff member, you’re eligible for a discounted ticket price. The waterpark closes at the end of summer, with Labor Day as its last day of operation for the season. But the competition and therapy pools remain open year-round under a heated bubble dome. Splash is operated by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department. The county government backed financing for the park’s construction and expansions, but it pays its own way with fees and concessions. The waterpark is also a major generator of summer jobs for young people. Splash in the Boro Family Waterpark is located inside Mill Creek Regional Park, off Georgia Highway 24. For more information, including the park’s schedules and fees, call (912) 489-3000 or visit www.splashintheboro.com.

Medical Directory East Georgia Regional Medical Center Built in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 149-bed acute-care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion, an adjacent medical office building and an outpatient diagnostic imaging center. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those health care facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. It was named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability Core Measures Honor Roll. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s health care team consists of approximately 650 employees and more than 100 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established EGRMC’s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. The medical center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including same-day surgery and ambulatory care, a sleep center, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation (PT, OT and ST) and state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment including a new 64-slice low-dose CT machine and a new 3D digital mammography machine. EGRMC also recently updated its interventional radiology/vascular suite to top-ofthe-line equipment. The hospital is also home to the only robotic surgical system in the area, which allows faster and less painful recovery time for qualifying patients. In spring 2010, East Georgia Regional expanded its service line to include interventional cardiology. The expansion of the cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive the highest quality care without leaving Statesboro. Each month, the surgical services department performs more than 1,000 surgeries, and the emergency department treats more than 3,300 patients. The Women’s Pavilion provides dedicated services to women of all ages and includes eight delivery rooms and 21 private recovery suitesMore than 120 babies are born in the Women’s Pavilion each month. In 2013, the Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation joined the hospital to supply all babies born at the Women’s Pavilion with a Georgia Southern University blanket. 40 • Welcome to the Boro 2017

Fishing enthusiasts might think they are in paradise when looking for a fishing hole in Bulloch County. Anyone with a fishing license can fish legally along the banks of public rivers or tributaries such as the Ogeechee River, Mill Creek, Little Lotts Creek, Upper Lotts Creek and Lower Lotts Creek. Put a boat in at one of the Ogeechee River’s many landings and enjoy the scenery as you fish. Just make sure you aren’t on private property. Bulloch has many lakes and ponds, and many owners will give permission to fish — as long as you ask and respect the land. Lake Collins, also known as Deloach’s Lake, is west of Portal and borders Candler County. The blackwater lake is fed by a creek that is home to otters, beavers, alligators and more. The lake is privately owned, but landowners and guests have fishing rights. Cypress Lake in southern Bulloch County near Register offers picturesque scenery, plenty of water and pole-bending fish — but most of the lake is private property. Oglesby’s Pond feeds Lake Collins, northeast of Portal. Another popular fishing spot is Simmons Pond off Georgia Highway 46 in the Nevils-Bay Gall area. Fishing rights memberships are available. Bulloch County is chock-full of wildlife there for the hunting, but written permission must be obtained from landowners to make it legal if hunters want to pursue the game. Most of the hunting areas available are private land, but nearby state-owned wildlife management areas such as Tuckahoe in Screven County offer hunting to licensed citizens. Make sure wherever you go, you have a license to hunt or fish, which you can get at several local retailers countywide. Bulloch County has two great state parks within easy driving distance. George L. Smith State Park, near Twin City in Emanuel County, is rustic and beautiful, with a 412-acre mill pond and 10 miles of canoe trails. Hiking trails take walkers through south Georgia woodlands, where they can explore local flora and fauna, then come back to a lakeside campsite or a cabin. The refurbished Parrish Mill, built in 1880, is a focal point for visitors who enjoy the covered bridge over the dam. The 1,634-acre park boasts 25 tent, trailer and RV sites as well as four rental cottages, picnic shelters, a group shelter and playground facilities. Magnolia Springs State Park, near Millen in Jenkins County, is home to crystal clear springs and is a popular destination for visitors but was once the site of Camp Lawton, a Confederate prison built in 1864. The stockades and guard towers have been replaced with beautiful scenery, but visitors still can see the earthen breastworks and imagine the prison site. The natural springs produce 7 million gallons of water daily, and visitors can enjoy the Complete Line view from several wooden platforms stretched of Self Defense across the pools. Storyboards scattered Products around provide historical and educational infor• Pepper Spray mation about the springs. • Tasers A wooden bridge carries visitors across • Firearms the water, providing a bird’s-eye view of local • Accessories wildlife, and leads to a freshwater aquarium featuring native species of fish. Hearts and Hands Clinic In its sixth year of operation, the clinic continues to provide more services to low-income Bulloch County residents who lack adequate health insurance. After being founded in Son’s Light Fellowship Baptist Church on U.S. Highway 301 South, it moved to its own space, a building at 127 N. College St. in downtown Statesboro. Hearts and Hands provides basic health screenings and dental services for people in need of serious work. And, thanks to a nearly $25,000 grant it received in 2015 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Coastal Georgia, the clinic provides mammograms. Bulloch County had the second-highest mortality rate attributed to cancer between 2003 and

The mission, located at 39 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, has 28 beds and two apartments for families in crisis, with separate wings for men and women. The shelter has a non-tolerance policy for drugs, alcohol, tobacco and violence/ threat of violence. The shelter’s mission is not simply to provide for the basic needs of the homeless, but to help them get back on their feet. Those services also include programs to help people obtain their GED diplomas, determine their career skills and get matched with jobs suited for their abilities. ASK A STUDENT:
What is your best “insider” tip for living in Statesboro?
A: “Get out and explore. Many
people rarely leave the confines of campus or off campus housing, and we have so many other things to do downtown and near Statesboro. I would say your first weekend or two down here, you should go out and explore Statesboro. Realize just how many unique things are beyond your residence hall.”

or any sports lover, Statesboro and Georgia Southern University are a perfect fit. From August until May, the Eagles of Georgia Southern don their blue and white to compete in 16 varsity sports. Eagle athletics have started to broaden their footprint around the country over the past couple of years. After more than 20 years in the Southern Conference — which calls Georgia and the Carolinas home — 2014 saw Georgia Southern make the leap into the Sun Belt, which expands west through Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, with outposts as far away as New Mexico and Idaho. A bigger conference with better-funded athletic departments has forced the Eagles to step up their level of play across all sports, but they already are making themselves right at home.

Around Town
Being involved in sports around Statesboro doesn’t have to mean cheering from the stands. As proud and delirious a sports fan legacy as Georgia Southern boasts, there are also plenty of opportunities to get out and play for yourself. Mill Creek Park has competitive flag football, soccer, tennis, kickball, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and wiffleball leagues running throughout the year for adults. A 27-hole disc golf course disc golf course is one of the better tracks in the area and can be found near the Statesboro airport. And for those looking to run and throw, each spring break weekend brings to town one of the biggest ultimate Frisbee tournaments in the Southeast. Finally, Georgia Southern’s golf course is nearing its fourth year of operation and has garnered plenty of accolades from national magazines. The course is open to the public and offers friendly rates for Georgia Southern students and employees.

e have taken you through all your collegiate need-to-knows: arts and entertainment, sports, setting up your utilities, buying your books and other important information. Now it’s time to take a look at the place you’ll be calling home for the next four years. Once you get out there and start exploring the Boro, you’ll find there are lots of ways to get involved and enjoy your community. There are festivals and monthly downtown events, as well as annual events. You’ll want to mark your calendar with these and venture off campus to enjoy them. Because you’ll be here in the Boro for the next four years — maybe even longer — it’s a great idea for you to break out of the campus bubble and get involved in your new home. Join community groups. Learn about local politics. Visit some of the smaller communities in our area. There is much to learn, see and love about Statesboro and Bulloch County. Take advantage of your years here and explore this place to the fullest. Plant your roots deep, and before you know it, you won’t even remember a time when Statesboro didn’t feel like home.
Local Government and Election Info
At some time during your four years at Georgia Southern, you’ll probably need to reach local government officials. As a student, the city of Statesboro is the local government you’ll probably deal with the most. If you live off campus, they’ll be the ones to turn on your water, pick up your garbage and give you a ticket if you break the law inside the city limits. Statesboro is the county seat and largest city in Bulloch County with almost 30,000 people. Over the last decade, Statesboro has grown into a shopping, health care, education and employment hub for the region, due in large part to the influence of Georgia Southern. Maybe that’s why so many GSU students decide to stick around after they graduate. Statesboro is governed by a five-member board and a mayor. Council members serve four-year terms, with half the council up for election every two years. Each councilman is elected by district and the mayor is elected by the city as a whole. Daily operations are handled by the city manager. Statesboro provides water, sewer, natural gas and garbage pickup to city residents. You can establish service for these utilities at City Hall on East Main Street. A big part of the college experience is tuning in to the world around you, and a great way to do that is to exercise your right to vote. This year is a presidential election year, so don’t miss your chance to participate in the democratic process. If you are voting in your hometown, be sure to apply for an absentee ballot. In order to register to vote in Georgia, you must be a citizen of the United States, a legal resident of Georgia and the county in which you wish to vote and at least 18 years of age by Election Day. Students living on campus or in the apartment complexes near campus vote at the Pittman Park United Methodist Church, located on Fair Road across from GSU.The county redrew its voting districts and added the Pittman Park precinct several years ago in order to make voting more convenient for students. To learn more about Georgia elections or to obtain an online voter registration form, visit the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.state.ga.us/.

Get To Know Your New Home
Statesboro and Bulloch County may seem a little slower-paced to visitors from Atlanta and other larger cities, but if you look, there is plenty to do and lots to enjoy. There’s music. There’s history. There’s sports. Statesboro has plenty to offer; a variety of restaurants, bars, cultural events and exhibits; children’s programs, fundraising events, festivals and more. And outside the city limits, Bulloch County holds adventure, too. Grab a rod and reel, make sure you have a fishing license, and visit the Canoochee and Ogeechee rivers. Check out area farms open to the public, or just drive around and enjoy seeing historic places, beautiful scenery and other interesting sights. Statesboro is the county seat, nestled in the heart of Bulloch County, There are other smaller towns and communities, too — Portal, where the annual Catface Country Turpentine Festival celebrates agricultural history each fall; and Brooklet, where everybody goes nuts in August for the yearly Peanut Festival, another agricultural celebration. Another small town is Register, where lots of newcomers pass through on the way to one of the area’s package shops — across the county line, of course, as Bulloch does not yet allow package sales. Statesboro does have liquor-by-the-drink, though. Stilson, Nevils, Denmark and Hopeulikit are other small communities you might stumble across as you explore.
Getting historical
Statesboro was chartered in 1908, and survived Sherman’s march to the sea to become a regional shopping hub, a city surrounded by rich agricultural history and vitality supported by higher education. The 2015 census counted a 30,721 population inside the city alone. Bulloch County has always been a strong agricultural area, supported by major cotton and tobacco production over the years as well as today’s crops of peanuts, soybeans, corn, cattle, vegetables and fruits. The “town and gown” relationship had always been spectacular,, with the college crowd blending well with the rural flavor of Bulloch County. Bulloch County is home to Georgia Southern University, Ogeechee Technical College, and East Georgia College. Armstrong State University will merge with GSU in January. Statesboro has some interesting history. Blind Willie McTell’s “Statesboro Blues,” later recorded by the Allman Brothers band, is a classic. The city was the film location of two movies — “Now and Then” and “1969” and the film “Buster and Billie” was filmed largely in rural Bulloch. Statesboro’s City Hall is housed in the old Jaeckel Motel, which has been visited by presidents and dignitaries. Statesboro is also where legendary Erk Russell created the Georgia Southern Eagles, made his mark and lived until his passing.
For that little something extra...
Georgia Southern University offers a world of interesting places to visit. Try the Lamar Q. Ball Raptor Center and Center for Wildlife Education to see area wildlife in a safe environment. Visit the GSU planetarium and museum, and enjoy the Botanical Gardens. If you’re looking to see the latest flick, check out Statesboro Cinema 12. There’s also a new trampoline park, Flight Factory, on Hwy. 301 North. The ClubHouse on Old Register Road has miniature golf, laser tag and video games as well as bowling. The Boro has many places to eat — drive-thru spots, sitdown eateries, coffee shops, fine dining and bars where trivia and karaoke make eating even more fun. You’ll find that Statesboro maintains its small town feel, but has some big city fun...if you know where to look.

Takin’ A Road Trip
Savannah
If you’re looking for a little fun outside of Statesboro, Savannah is just a short drive away. Hit I-16 for a quick 45-minute drive, and you’ll find yourself in the closest “bigger” city to the Boro. If dancing the night away is what you’re up for, Savannah has some of the Southeast’s hottest night clubs, ranging from country to salsa to techno to rock. Want to know what’s going on in the everchanging Savannah club scene? The easiest way is to pick up a copy of Connec Savannah while you’re there. You can also check out the website at www.connectsavannah.com. You should be aware, however, that Savannah bars don’t admit anyone under 21, even just to see a band. But this shouldn’t stop you from putting Savannah on your to-do list. It’s still home to River Street, which offers a variety of good food and fun. There are lots of unique restaurants there you’ll enjoy exploring. You can stil find the usual chain restaurants uptown, near the malls, as well. For a quiet night on the water, try a Savannah River boat cruise, which features permier dining and entertainment. Daily cruises include sightseeing, luncheons and even a murder mystery. Check out their offerings at www.savannahriverboat.com. Sports fans can catch great minor league baseball action with the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Savannah Bananas. For ticket information, call (912) 351-9150. One of Savannah’s most popular musical venues is the Civic Center. Big-name acts perform stadium-style in the main arena, but there’s also the smaller, more intimate Johnny Mercer Theater inside the center. For ticket information and event listings, check out www.savannahcivic. com. If you’re a history buff, you’ll enjoy spending time in Savannah, especially the ghost tours. You can hop a tour nightly to check out the city’s spookier spots. Go online at www.savannahtours.us for more information. You can also check out nearby Fort Pulaski and Fort Jackson, historical sites that predate the Civil War. For Fort Pulaski info, call (912) 7865787; Fort Jackson, (912) 232-3945. When you need some sand between your toes, head to nearby Tybee Island. Located about an hour from Statesboro, Tybee provides a great respite from everyday life. Clean, white beaches are waiting for you, and there are plenty of hotels if you want to make it more than just a day trip. While there, be sure to check out the Historical Light Station and Museum.

St. Simons Often skipped over in favor of the more local Tybee Island, St. Simons is a great alternative for students looking for a day trip to the beach and more. Located about 2 hours down I-95, St. Simons offers a variety of activities you can fit into any budget. As with most of Georgia’s Barrier Islands, there is plenty of history to explore. Fort Frederica offers the sprawling remains of the 18th century settlement originally built by James Oglethorpe to defend against then Spanish-controlled Florida. The nearby Bloody Marsh Battle Memorial marks the spot where Oglethorpe and Spanish invaders clashed in 1742. On the southern tip of the island stands the St. Simons Lighthouse. At nearly 150 years old, the structure is still operational and is one of five like it on the Georgia coast. Climb the 129 steps to enjoy phenomenal views of the Atlantic, Brunswick and nearby Jekyll Island. Only steps away from the lighthouse, the Pier Village offers a row of local shops and restaurants. Have a crab cake sandwich at Barbara Jean’s before strolling down to Brogen’s two-story deck and sip your drink of choice while enjoying ocean views. Just beyond the village, a large pier extends into the ocean, a perfect spot for fishing or catching a sunset. Depending on the tide, you can access St. Simon’s largest public beach, East Beach, from the village. If not, Messengale Park is another popular access point. On average, the beaches on St. Simons won’t be as crowded as Tybee, so finding a place to spread your towel and put down a cooler should be easy. The waves might not be large enough to warrant strapping a surfboard to your car, but you can definitely get your money out of a $15 boogie board, if that’s your style. For those not content with baking in the sun and surf all day, St. Simons has several golf courses, many with marsh and ocean views. If you haven’t perfected your swing, an 18-hole miniature golf course lies in the shadow of the lighthouse in Neptune Park. Kayaking is also popular and several local companies offer rentals and tours. If you’re famished after your day of tanning and exploring, St. Simons has plenty of local food spots worth checking out. If you’re after traditional seafood, The Crab Trap is a perfectly token island-style seafood shack, complete with fishing nets and buoys adorning the walls. Avoid the cliché snow crab and go for the local blue crab and oysters if they’re in season. Southern Soul offers all manner of barbecue in a converted gas station with a covered patio. Stick to mainstay favorites like burnt ends and Brunswick stew, or explore rotating items like stuffed beef patties, fried plantains and deviled crab.
