THE WEEKLY put several questions and concerns about our roads to Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary for Safety, Environment and Regulation, Tara McCa rthy, who said speed zones across NSW are “constantly reviewed and assessed in accordance with the NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines.”“Factorsincluding crash profile, road function, road use, roadside development, road characteristics, traffic mix, crash his tory and the presence of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicycle riders inform this assessment,” she said.

This is adding to the congestion on re gional roads and many feel speed limits are due for a change.

Murwillumbah has experienced signif icant population growth in the past five years, according to the 2021 Census, with more than 3,500 new residents calling the Tweed Valley home.

Ms Hartge-Hazelman said she’s making an urgent call for lines to be added to the entire length of Duranbah Road, along with tree trimming and footpaths.

Duranbah resident Bianca Hartge-Hazel man is fed up and has written to Tweed Shire Councillors, asking them to raise an urgent motion to address the dangers of Duranbah Road for locals and local school children following “yet another near-fatal car crash recently”.

“Drivers — locals and visitors — regularly drive on the wrong side of the road at 80km per hour because there are no lines, and a lack of signage.”

Questions to Transport NSW

there are not constant lines on the road.

“While local councils do not have the au thority to designate or enforce any speed limits, our officers do assist Transport for NSW when speed zones are being re viewed and Council’s Local Traffic Com mittee may also provide comment,” the Council spokesperson said.

“It was the fourth near miss in two weeks,” she said via an email to The Weekly and councillors.

Among the Tweed’s accident hot spots are Tumbulgum Road, Numinbah Road and Duranbah Road, which residents fear are “too fast and risk further crashes”.

Residents have approached The Weekly via letters, online comments and phone calls, expressing their concerns over in creased traffic and a dangerous mix of drivers.Alocal truck driver even told The Week ly that Tweed Valley Way is busier than when it was the original highway, prior to the construction of the Pacific Motorway.

“Drivers are ignoring the school zone of 40km at Duranbah School.

LOCAL MOTORISTS are crying out for widespread speed reductions and safety upgrades for Tweed roads, following two fatalities and “constant near misses”.

Ms Hartge-Hazelman said the speed lim it of 80 kilometres per hour is “too high for this road” and she’s questioned why

“It’s leading to drivers swerving onto the wrong side of the road,” she said.

“There are lines on the section of Du ranbah Road near Duranbah Primary School — noting the width of the road is the same as the rest of the road.

“Kings Forest will create increased traf fic in this area and must be considered,” she

“It is not safe for children who live in Duranbah to be able to walk to school and there are no footpaths along the side of the road.”

Councillors talk road safety

“It is up to us all to do our part and place road safety as a priority in our lives.”

“If we need more signage on blind corners, we can do that,” he said.

Cr Polglase said Ms Hartge-Hazelman’s concerns in regard to Duranbah Road will be referred to the Council’s Traffic Committee for assessment.

When asked for his views on the road issues troubling residents, he said better signage could help new drivers to adapt to Tweed roads.

Cr Polglase said he does believe that greater consistency of speed limits needs to be considered on some roads.

Councillor Warren Polglase said he does not support reducing speed limits to im prove overall safety but believes policing is a better option.

“I think what we have to look at is the education of drivers, it’s not always the road conditions, but we also need con sistent speed signage in high-risk areas.”

“I think fixed speed cameras are a great way to deter speeding on our roads,” she said.“Ido not believe we are getting more police, or a 24/7 police station at Murwil lumbah, therefore the use of fixed speed cameras make people think and check their speed and pay attention.”

“While each crash has its own circum stances and contributing factors, we know that human factors such as inattention, speeding and driving impaired contribute to the vast majority of crashes,” she said.

Councillor Rhiannon Brinsmead said Council, as part of the community, is aware of and saddened by the number of road crashes in our shire in recent weeks.

Duranbah Road residents say they are "fed up" with the dangers on regional roads and they're calling on police, Council and the state government to act

“But changing the speed limit will have little impact, in my opinion.”

Cr Polglase said the focus needs to also shift to having a 24/7 police station in Murwillumbah.“It’sgoodtohave round the clock polic ing in the Tweed Valley and I believe this would go a long way in monitoring and discouraging dangerous drivers,” he said.

Cr Polglase said he strongly believes greater policing and education holds the key to improving driver behaviour and keeping drivers in check.

“Road authorities such as Council and Transport for NSW work to make the roads as safe and as forgiving as possible and we know that a driver’s speed will ulti mately determine the outcome of a crash.

“With all these accidents taking place, I believe police are about to step up their efforts and will be cracking down on speeding drivers,” he said.

Cr Polglase said motorists should main tain respect for each other and ensure safety comes first.

Cr Meredith Dennis said she supports the use of fixed speed cameras and used the example of the Burringbar range.

“Some drivers do not want to drive fast, some drivers go too fast, we need to respect each other and our choices, combined with greater policing,” he said.

Tweed Police said it was about 4pm on Wednesday, September 14, when emer gency services were called to the scene.

“The second rider was uninjured.”

WORKS ARE expected to commence on the Tyalgum Road landslip in mid2023, according to Tweed Shire Council’s manager of infrastructure delivery Tim Mackney.MrMackney has provided The Week ly with an update on the Tyalgum Road landslip as a result of the February flood, which he described as the “largest and most complicated item” on Council’s flood recovery roads list.

“The damage site is more than 100 me tres in width, some 60 metres in length and appears to comprise of some 6-10 metres depth of material which has ac tually slipped,” he said.

Ms Steel says landlords do not have to give a reason for increasing the rent, and in NSW there is no limit to how much they can increase the rent. The ACT government has limited rent increases to 10 per cent above inflation, but there is no sign NSW will follow suit.

“Once designs are complete, Council will select the most suitable contractor to carry out the work, with works expected to start on site in mid-2023.”

“The rider — a female believed to be in her 50s — was treated by NSW Ambu lance paramedics, however she died at the scene,” police said.

“If the landlord does not give this required notice, tenants are not obliged to pay the increased amount of the rent.”

“The complexities, time and cost of de signing and constructing a safe tempo rary solution is almost as significant as a permanent fix; and would divert limited resources from the task of permanently fixing the “Thereforeroadway.Council is only proceeding with the permanent repair.”

“If tenants are on a month-to-month lease there are limits to the frequency with which the rent can be increased. This differs from state to state. In Queensland it is every six months. In NSW, the ACT and Victoria it is every 12 months.

Police said two motorcyclists were trav elling east along Numinbah Road when one rider allegedly crossed to the incor rect side of the road and collided with a school bus.

“The male bus driver — believed to be in his 40s — was uninjured and taken for mandatory testing,” police said.

“Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circum stances surrounding the crash. About 10pm Numinbah Road was reopened.”

“Landlords can insert a clause into a long-term lease that specifically allows an increase during the lease period, but only once every 12 months. It is important tenants check their lease carefully before they sign,” Ms Steel says.

With inflation pushing up interest rates and mortgage costs, many landlords are increasing the rent on tenants, so it’s important for both landlord and tenant to know the law regarding raising rents.

LESS THAN 48 hours after the tragic death of a woman from a head-on crash at Tumbulgum Road near Murwillumbah, a motorcycle rider was sadly killed after a crash with a school bus on Numinbah Road at Crystal Creek.

Mr Mackney said a temporary solution, such as opening one lane to traffic, is sim ply not possible due to the extent of the landslip.“Geotechnical engineers have advised Council that results from test drilling indicate it is not safe for any temporary track to be created,” he said.

“The geotechnical reports Council re ceived in August have been included in the design and construct bundle of works for repairs to the largest road slips around the shire,” Mr Mackney said.

Following geotechnical reports, AMC has completed initial stabilisation works on the main landslip and the contractor is confident one lane will be able to be opened for use on the eve of the October long weekend, weather permitting.

Over the weekend, when we expect traffic volumes to be lower, traffic lights will be in operation.

Residents are advised that with one lane in use, queuing can be expected in both directions. Parking will no longer be available on either side of the slip works to allow for traffic flow and reduce any safety hazards in the area.

Council would like to thank the community and customers for their patience while waiting for the pool to be emptied and repaired and once again providing the community with opportunities to be active and healthy.Formore information on TRAC’s opening hours and charges, visit trac.tweed.nsw.gov.au

Weed biosecurity is an important issue in our region, now more than ever after the floods of early 2022. Fodder coming in from other states brings the real threat of seed movement. Livestock, vehicle and machinery movement, earth works and landslips all create further risk. The land has incurred major disturbance and therefore seeds have a better chance of germinating and spreading.

Kinship Festival returns

ONE OF the region’s largest cultural events returns to Knox Park in Murwillumbah on Saturday, September 24, for the seventh annual Kinship Festival.

“The festival invites families and community to enjoy a day of meaningful connection – in corporating a community Corroboree, Indig enous artisan markets, face painting and kids’ nature crafts and activities, a community art installation, and free bush tucker and vegetarian lunch,” Aunty Deidre said.

The event is proudly funded by the state government’s Reconnecting Regional NSW program and Tweed Shire Council.

“This year, in particular, we are looking for ward to the Kinship Festival again as a way of symbolising the strength, beauty and purpose in moving forward and supporting our community to flourish,” she said.

“I always try to encourage people to talk, even if they feel shy, because they have a spirit too, and that means if they have something to say they shouldn’t be frightened to come up and have a yarn.”

“The event is all about celebrating the resil ience and brilliance of our local youth,” she said.

“Many people want to learn more about our culture, and Kinship provides a doorway to connecting, to ask questions, have a yarn, see ceremony taking place.

“Throughout the floods, I saw so many young people out there trying to help and assist in our recovery,” she said.

“It was a brilliant reminder that we learn from them.”MsFermanis said the festival is about taking the focus off the negative and celebrating the positive.“I’dlike to encourage all local youths to come along, experience the festival, and start a con versation with one of our Momentum staff and experience the great opportunities to lend a hand and build relationships,” she said.

Murwillumbah Community Centre Kinship Festival committee member Aunty Deidre Cur rie said after the trauma of the recent flood, the Kinship committee feels that creating a sense of connection and healing for all families is more important than ever.

Ms Fermanis said the festival is celebrating its fifth year and aims to remind the community that there are so many amazing young people.

Mr Holston said he remains per plexed as to why NAB has made the decision to close the two branches, forcing residents to use the Coolan gatta or Mullumbimby branches.

“The bank was to be known as The National Commercial Banking Cor poration of Australia Limited, short marketing name National Australia Bank.“The media were specifically re

NAB, formerly CBC, has a rich his tory in the Tweed, and Mr Holston wanted to share some of his knowl edge of the banking sites, which date back to 1880 in Murwillumbah and have a connection to Knox Park.

“In 1980, as marketing manager of NSW, ACT and Queensland, I attend ed a ceremony with two other CBC executives to place a plaque at the entrance to the Murwillumbah bank to acknowledge 100 years of banking in“ManagerMurwillumbah.KenFoulcher was also present, along with NSW state mem ber Jack Boyd and his brother and former mayor Max Boyd representing the Tweed Shire Council.

Mr Holston said since he left the bank in 1987, National Australia Bank have changed their identity twice and of course are now known as“I‘NAB’.trust these notes will give you some idea of what some banks think of the ‘little’ people in our area,” he said.

The bank told The Weekly that a declining number of customers using in-branch services and online banking are to blame, but Mr Holston remains sceptical.“Inresponse to the Murwillumbah branch closure, one wonders what small business owners are going to do for matters like trying to get change for their business,” Mr Holston said.

“The two lines in the star represent ed the supposed merging of the two banks and the seven points of the star the six states and two territories of the country.”

“I joined the CBC Bank in Murwil lumbah on January 14, 1957, and we had four juniors appointed within a two-week period.”

In the early 1970s, Mr Holston was the marketing manager of the CBC bankcard.“Ireturned to Murwillumbah to speak to several groups on the new credit card ‘bankcard’ which was in troduced to the country in October 1974,” he said.

“The colour of the star was known as warm red — a combination of the National’s red logo and CBC with their orange logo.

“It is interesting to note that Knox Park was named after this family due to the contribution they made to the pioneering growth of the Tweed Val ley and sugar sector.”

“It is hard to believe that in excess of 90 per cent of their customer base is banking electronically,” he said.

“The bank appointed New York company Anspach, Grossman, Por tugal to develop the new bank’s cor porate identity and to acknowledge both banks in the new name at a cost which would have been well in excess of a million dollars.

FORMER NATIONAL Australia Bank (NAB) and Commercial Bank Company (CBC) marketing manager

Mr Holston said CBC had a large customer base of many well-known local families, including the Budds, Williams, Prestons, Proudfoots, Hal liday and Stainlay, Tweed District Hospital, CPS Office and many of the large banana growers in the shire who exported all over Australia.

“This allowed the commercial banks to compete with the government bank and enabled them to enter the longterm housing market.

“The bank had considered opening premises in Tumbulgum at the time, but Murwillumbah seemed to be the area where the population wished to locate,” he said.

Ian Holston was a corporate banking man through and through, but has been disappointed with his bank for many years

“In 1956, the private banks were allowed to form savings accounts, prior to this the Commonwealth Bank was the only bank to have access to this type of account.

“The Knox family CSR Company, formerly from Denmark, were very prominent in this business and many of their family served on the board of the CBC Bank and also senior man agement in the CBC Bank for many years,” he said.

Mr Holston said The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited Murwillumbah branch opened on February 4, 1880, in a rented prem ises from the Colonial Sugar Refining Co (CSR) near where the Summer land Credit Union was located.

“Does your local Post Office provide this facility? Surely the executive of the bank must be aware of the ageing population and retired profile of the customer base.

“In late 1982, I was fortunate to be appointed NSW/ACT consumer marketing manager in charge of the state branch banking network.

Ian Holston has broken his silence on NAB’s decision to close two of its ma jor Tweed Shire branches at Kingscliff and Murwillumbah this year.

“It is quite a journey from the out lying areas of the Tweed to cross the border and bank at Coolangatta, need I remind the bank of what happened when the border was closed during COVID-19.”MrHolston said it was interesting to note in the last Census that the popu lation of Murwillumbah was growing

“The Pulse” is an acrobatic extravaganza, beautifully professionally shot, and is sure to delight circus lovers and gymnasts alike – or anyone who marvels at human physical prowess.Boththese films are short and sweet, so will keep young minds captivated the whole way through. There’s a nicely extended intermission between the Sunday double screening for toilet breaks and snack attacks!

Exhibition curator and abstract nature photog rapher Andia Cally said that after photograph ing golden lines in nature, she was reminded of the Kintsugi technique.
