“The Bureau appeared before the [NSW Parliamentary Select] Committee on 14 June 2022 with no further engagement or requests for information from the Com mittee.“The Bureau refutes a number of find ings in the NSW Select Committee’s re port, including that the Bureau was not prepared for, and did not comprehend the scale of the February/March 2022 floods and that it functions as a ‘nine to five business’ and the suggestion that it treats severe weather as business as usual.”

The Bureau detailed multiple occasions in 2021 when it warned the government and communities of La Niña, and the potential for life-threatening floods, as well as embedding specialists in the National Situation Room in Canberra. ‘In the lead up to and during the flood events in south-east Queensland and northern NSW, the Bureau explicitly fore cast and communicated to the Queensland and NSW governments and the general community the risk of very heavy rainfall for south-east Queensland and northern NSW many days in advance, with flood watches and warnings also issued many days in advance,” the spokesperson said.

“At the briefing on 23 February, the Bu reau noted the potential for life-threaten ing flash flooding over the New South Wales north coast.” BOM also refuted claims in the media that the independent inquiry found the BOM rain gauge network was not fit for purpose.“TheInquiry found that the design of the rain and river gauge network in NSW is not fit for purpose and recommended that, to improve the rain and river gauge network, ownership of the network should be transferred to the Bureau,” the spokes person said. “In the Northern Rivers region, there are 90 flood warning assets: 69 are owned, operated and maintained by local councils and other government agencies and 21 are owned, operated and maintained by the“NoneBureau.of the flood warning network assets that failed during the flood event are owned, operated or maintained by theLismoreBureau.”Shire Council was in charge of maintenance of a handful of gauges that failed, but Tweed Shire Council con firmed to The Weekly that Council “did not experience any significant failures of gauges or flood mitigation infrastructure during the February-March 2022 event.”

Trees to make way for car park

AN ESTIMATED 49 native rainforest trees have been earmarked for removal by the Department of Education to make way for a larger car park at Wollumbin High School. As the Murwillumbah school merger plan pushes ahead, all students from Mur willumbah High School are set to move to Wollumbin High School from the start of 2023. This will make way for works to commence on the Murwillumbah Edu cation Campus at Murwillumbah High.

“These trees are ones that are native and endemic, and according to our Council requirements, you cannot remove these particular species of trees,” she said. “We are an area of internationally signif icant environment which needs protection and we are also trying to establish a Cool Towns“Apartpolicy.frombeing precious habitat, these trees are particularly valuable for their cooling properties, especially in a heat bank like a car park.

THE BUREAU of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a scathing rebuke to criticism of the agency in a Senate inquiry and re sponded to an independent inquiry into the February flood response, saying none of its gauges failed and numerous warnings of the impending disaster were issued.

“I know that many in our town are al ready very concerned about the lack of consultation with the community about the merging of the schools. “This is a chance for the Education De partment to show respect for and consul tation with our community.

“I would hope that the state government respects our processes and leaves these trees in place.”

By Jonathon Howard

A Murwillumbah resident, who preferred not to be named, contacted The Weekly to raise the alarm about the tree removal and highlighted that the species were planted by conservationist Bruce Chick. “While the majority of these trees are planted, they are nearly all endemic to the local area and include trees protected under state legislation (Owenia cepiodo ra, Lepiderema pulchella and Syzgium moorei),” the resident said. “These trees were planted more than 25 years ago by Bruce Chick and volunteers. “Some of these trees now are of a good height, are flowering and fruiting, and provide important ecological value.

“The Bureau also explicitly identified the risk for intense localised rain events, life-threatening flash flooding and the po tential for rapid river rises. “For this event, the Bureau conducted daily briefings to the NSW SES and con ducted 17 area-specific briefings and five overnight weather and flood briefings, beginning on Wednesday 23 February.

The response follows BOM receiving major criticism for its handling of the February flood.

BOM responds to criticism

“The trees were planted by Bruce Chick who was an environmental pioneer. I have asked Council staff to urgently make rep resentation on the matter and they are doing that.

“There are a number of assertions and findings contained within the [Senate] report that are factually incorrect, and oth ers that are not supported by evidence,” a BOM spokesperson said.

Many of us would see the use of secret camera computer generated ‘facial recognition’ technology as the type of domination and foul play used by repressive governments like the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Electricity retailers are in a price squeeze and have slashed the amount they pay for your excess solar, now paying zero - 8c per kWh, down from the 21c we were paid in 2020. Unless you have solar and batteries you are facing serious increases in energy costs. 888 Solar Tek have installed hundreds of solar battery systems in the last 8 years and can help you with great deals on the most reliable and long lasting solar batteries in Australia.

The exception in height appears to be with regards to primary and sec ondary road frontage. Can someone please explain why nearly every week a DA for a 1.8 me tre high fence is “approved” by TSC when no such “approval” should be required.

Mic Carter, Murwillumbah Fence heights question According to the NSW Government planning portal: “side and rear bound ary fences must not be higher than 1.8 meters, or 1.2 meters if the fence is built from masonry.”

There is not even a sign at my local Kmart or Bunnings stores at Tweed Heads telling us we are being subject ed to facial recognition technology (which captures images of people’s faces from video cameras as a unique faceprint and stores them) as we walk in. Has big business in Australia to tally lost its moral compass? Has the world gone down the drain completely on moral standards? We should vote with our feet, stop shopping at these places and raise our voices by letters to newspapers and politicians before it’s too late and we finish up like Uyghur people of China who have to swear allegiance to the CCP before being sent to work as modern-day slaves in the cotton fields.

Test Drive a Nissan Leaf EV! We have 24, 30 & 40 kWh cars at half the new price. Australian electricity prices have risen by up to 18.3 per cent under a decision by the Australian Energy Regulator due to increased cost of generation due to global rises in coal and gas prices. The increases, which came into effect from July, amount to more than $250 a year based on ACCC figures putting the average residential electricity bill at $1,434.

Housing is a human right. Janelle Saffin MP MEMBER FOR LISMORE Our region has faced a housing crisis for many years. This has intensified after our flooding disaster in February this year. I moved a Notice of Motion in Parliament calling on the NSW Government to build 18,600 affordable homes in the Northern Rivers which Social Futures estimates will meet demand. I'll continue advocating to get what we need.

Proud Australians I totally agree with Clinton Beisler’s comments in relation to Tweed Shire Council renaming the Australia Day Awards. We are proud Australians, proud of our traditions. Do the residents of the Tweed Shire ever have a say as to the changes made by Council, seemly forced on them, in my opinion, to make those changes by listening to a minority group of people to appear politically correct. The word ‘Australian’ contained in an award indicates that particu lar person has achieved Australian recognition for something achieved equal to any community in our nation. Upon swearing in as councillors, they swear to represent the values of Australia and in particular the com munity they represent. The subject of our flag not being flown was a discussion only and not mandated. We fly our flag as a symbol of pride and ownership to a wonderful country.Inthis ever-evolving society, some changes to old approaches must be made, but Council should stop chang es to appease minorities. It would be interesting for coun cillors to publish their reasons for change and if they were a majority decision. Lesley Newling, Tweed Heads Not this again Here we go again with this ridicu lous scheme (TVW, Wardrop Valley, August 18). Last time this boondog gle went the rounds, it was figured out it would house 300 people at a cost of $70 million. Think about that next time you hit a pothole, but putting that aside, if Council did want to spend that amount, they could buy at least a hundred flood-prone properties in the shire closer to town. This would free the current owners and provide short-term accommoda tion for at least that number of people right now, not years in the future. But that would require the applica tion of common sense, a commodity obviously in short supply round the district, in my opinion. G Manson, Wardrop Valley I’m with Ron Cooper on this one I agree 100 per cent with Ron Coo per’s article in The Weekly (August 18).Imyself am homeless and have been following his idea for two years now, hoping for a place to call home. If the original proposal was for an off-grid eco village community, with solar power, rainwater and compost ing toilets, it would be far cheaper for Council to provide infastructure. Council own this unused asset of 70 hectares which could be rezoned residential with a large section divided up into house blocks and sold to local residents to relocate due to being in the flood zone. The profits from this sale could pay for the roads and infastructure. Then Council could lease the re maining land to a local community group to form an ecovillage commu nity to facilitate temporary removable structures owned by each tennant, which would provide ongoing revenue toThisCouncil.could be a perfect opportunity to set up permaculture gardens and create a learning centre to teach com munity these vital skills and could go on to be a local tourist attraction. Council has the manpower, equip ment and expertise to become a devel oper and landlord and roll this project out, which could be a great model for other shires and a place for our children to be able to afford to live. Come on guys, let’s do this.

Mayor Cherry said even if Council re scinded the decision, it would not make any difference, as the contracts had al ready been terminated. “I think, in my view, buyers need to con sult a contract lawyer about the legality of terminating the contract when there is a clear pathway to remedy it,” she said. PROSPECTIVE BUYERS of apartments above Woolworths in Cabarita say they are distraught after having their contracts terminated by the developer, after the de velopment application was knocked back by Tweed Shire Council due to parking.

Mayor Chris Cherry said the state gov ernment gave the 38-apartment project approval with a car park shortfall, but addressed it by having the car park as a common area.

Tweed Valley Weekly Locals Supporting Locals Thursday, August 25, 2022 Local News 5

“To subdivide it they need to put in a separate application, but the developers should have done something to remedy the shortfall,” the mayor told The Weekly. “They were asked to do that by Council and we gave them two clear pathways, they could have strata title and a common car park or they could change the develop ment to get more parking. “They decided to go ahead with this [without doing either]. “That’s the frustrating thing, there is a solution, but the developers have chosen not to take that and you can draw your own conclusions.

“I think it’s unbelievable frankly that the proponent is now laying this at Council’s door when they had a solution available that should have been taken, in my opin ion.“They are desperate for community pres sure to approve this, but that will set a precedent for every development that will create a big impact on the community as far as parking goes.”

“I was impressed with the expansive work and detailed consideration evident in the Independent Flood Inquiry report released last week,” Mayor Cherry said. “The sentence that strikes me most is that the ‘2022 floods must become the catalyst for change in the way governments and the community considers floods and floodplains.’“Floodplanning and land swap or buyback programs are one of the main points of interest for Council and I hope we can see a detailed response to this rec ommendation coming forward as soon asThepossible.”findings and recommendations fol lowed an extensive inquiry, which received 1,494 submissions and held 144 meetings with stakeholders, including a community forum at Tumbulgum on May 4, 2022.

“Be assured I’ll continue to push for this to happen as soon as possible.”

Local councils may apply to be part of the trial by September 30.

Tweed was smashed by the record Febru ary flood, where more than 2,100 homes were damaged and an estimated 1,600 residents were displaced by the event. Council estimates the damage to pub lic infrastructure, including roads and Council buildings, will cost up to $100 million to repair.

“This is one thing we have long waited for, ever since we saw the Queensland Premier and former Prime Minister an nounce it for Queensland. “We have a commitment from the NSW Government to do this, but why not start today?“Has the NSW cabinet even dealt with it “Whatyet? were they doing for the two weeks that they sat on the flood report? injury lawyer Jason Smith at Stacks Law Firm said NSW lags behind Europe and even some states in Australia in providing a legal basis for “E-scooterse-scooters.whichcan travel at up to 25 kph are allowed on roads where there is no cycle path in Queensland, the ACT and Tasmania. Riders must be over 16 and wear a helmet,” Mr Smith “Butsaid. e-scooters are banned from roads in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. “In NSW e-scooters are classified as a motorised vehicle under NSW Road Rule 240(2)(c). This means they are banned from the road ‘at any time while any person travelling in or on the device is wholly or partly assisted in propelling the device by means other than human power’. Penalty – up to The$2,200.”NSW government has now allowed a trial of rented e-scooters in four parks and later in council areas. The trial will last 12 months and be limited to riders 16 and over. They can ride up to 20 kph on cycle paths or on roads which have a speed limit of 50 kph, and 10 kph on shared paths. Privately owned e-scooters are still banned. Helmets must be worn and the scooters must be rented from private providers.

But Mr Smith warned the law on what happens in an e-scooter accident is not clear. Car insurance doesn’t cover e-scooter accidents.

nowadays

“The combining of the back-end of our SES and Rural Fire Service so they can operate together more seamlessly is a great example of this, as is the training of our community to be prepared for floods in the same way we are prepared for fire.”

“E-scooters can whiz along at 25 kph. Hit a pothole at that speed and you will go flying. You need to consider the law regarding insurance or culpability if you collide with a pedestrian or cause damage to another vehicle. “Damage someone’s property or cause an injury and you may be personally liable and have to pay out of your own pocket. Renters of e-scooters sign a waiver giving up the right to sue the company in case of injury or accident. It would be wise to get legal advice before you take up e-scooting. Studies overseas have found e-scooters lead to more injuries than other modes of transport.

“The community has waited long enough, and answers were needed now on a comprehensive response to move people off the floodplain,” Mayor Cherry said.

Cr Cherry said she was pleased with the report’s findings which would take some time to “Theredigest.isan incredible amount of data and learnings in this report and I sincerely thank Professor Mary O’Kane and Mick Fuller for their work and the care and con sideration that is evident in the report,” Mayor Cherry said. “It will take a while to digest all of the in formation. In terms of the 28 recommen dations, I am pleased to see a number of Council’s main advocacy points have been incorporated into the final document.

Premier Perrottet said of the 28 recom mendations made by the report’s authors, Professor Mary O’Kane AC and former NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller APM, his government had accepted six immediately, with the remaining 22 rec ommendations supported in-principle, pending further work and consultation with key stakeholders.

Work on Rail Trail’s new gravel surface starts Construction work on the Northern Rivers Rail Trail is ramping up with work starting last week on the final gravel surface for the Tweed section of the trail. After an extended run of dry weather, work to lay down the new compacted gravel surface is starting at several points along the trail including at Burringbar, Stokers Siding and South Murwillumbah. It will progress at about 300 to 400 metres per day until it is completed later this year. Project director Iain Lonsdale said he was pleased with progress on the construction of the trail despite the heavy rains and flood event earlier this year.

Tweed Shire Council wishes to recognise the generations of the local Aboriginal people of the Bundjalung Nation who have lived in and derived their physical and spiritual needs from the forests, rivers, lakes and streams of this beautiful valley over many thousands of years as the traditional custodians of these lands.

“Council identified the need for the upgrades as part of our Sports Field Strategy and our ongoing program to install and upgrade sports field lighting to LEDs,” Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith said unfortunately the new lighting at Murwillumbah Hockey Club had been damaged by the flood earlier this year but would be replaced as soon as additional funding could be secured.

10 Lindisfarne Junior School year 4 students and 4 parents and teachers joined Council’s Sustainability and Environment staff and 3 Fingal Head Coast Care members to plant 118 specialised feed and shelter trees. The students learned about how these trees will help Glossy BlackCockatoos and Bush Stone-curlews thrive and survive. This activity was organised as part of the Conserving Cockatoos and Curlews on the Coast project which aims to improve existing habitat for these important bird species on public land in the Tweed. One parent, Sarah Whitrod said it was great to have the students involved in this activity. “This is an exciting project which we will continue to be involved in. It’s very special that we can all visit the park, watch our trees grow and see how our school is contributing to such an important cause,” Ms Whitrod said. The students will continue to be involved by painting some of the new bollards installed to prevent vehicles accessing the area and impacting on this important bird breeding and feeding site. “We worked closely with the clubs before applying for funding for the lighting which will allow for extended usage of the fields at both venues. Staying active and healthy is an important part of our lifestyle in the Tweed and we are committed to providing opportunities for our community to be more active and healthy.

Construction on the Tweed section of the rail trail scheduled for this month includes: • restoration works continuing on steel and timber bridges • construction of numerous bypasses and culverts around existing bridges • excavation and earthworks • laying of pipes and drainage • installation of hardwood decking and other surfaces over bridges • trail access works. Mr Lonsdale said the railway track would be recycled and reused in other infrastructure projects including for stabilisation within new building“Sustainabilityfoundations.has been an important guiding principle for this project and our projections show the recycling of the steel alone will contribute to a fairly significant savings in greenhouse gas emissions,” he “Wesaid.will also reuse the rail sleepers within the rail trail landscape, including seating, benches as well as retaining the best for reuse in future public structures and art works along the trail.” When completed, the full length of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will preserve the 132km scenic rail corridor between Murwillumbah and Casino, creating a safe, car-free connection between the villages and towns along the route. It will be constructed in 4 stages, each delivered separately by local councils, as funding allows. The Tweed section will be the first to open by early next year and will connect the rural villages of Crabbes Creek, Mooball, Burringbar and Stokers Siding with Murwillumbah. Trains on the former North Coast line ceased running in 2004. Funding for the Tweed section was provided by the Australian Government, under its Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Package Fund, and the NSW Government under the Restart NSW fund.

Lighting upgrades at other sports fields in the Tweed are also in the planning, with work set to begin at Bilambil West Sports Field next month and at Arkinstall Park Sports Fields early next year.

Casuarina Beach Rugby Club vice president Danielle Hevers said the new lighting had already made a positive impact at the club by optimising their playing space and providing a usable second field.

“Our contractors Hazell Bros are doing a great job and we are very pleased with the progress they have made since the floods,” Mr Lonsdale“Workerssaid.have removed almost all of the railway track along the 24km Tweed section of the trail to make way for the new surface so that is a significant milestone. “Now the focus is shifting to the trail surface itself which will be a compacted gravel surface along the majority of the trail with some asphalt and concrete at the railway stations. “In January, we laid 2 test sections of the gravel surface and they performed very well during that period of heavy rain and are showing the level of durability we were looking for. We are feeling confident this next phase of works on the trail surface will be a success.”

Sports field lighting has been upgraded at Casuarina Beach Rugby Club and Murwillumbah Hockey Club as part of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund Round 2. This included a $100,000 upgrade for the second field at Casuarina Beach Rugby Club and a $240,000 upgrade for the second turf field at Murwillumbah HockeyCouncil’sClub.Manager Parks and Active Communities Murray Smith said the additional lighting had been well received and would help to extend playing hours at the clubs.

“We can now play at night which is fantastic and it’s also allowed other sporting groups to use the field,” Ms Hevers said. “This season has seen a number of teams unable to host games due to the floods and wet weather. The combination of our fast-draining sandy soil and the addition of the lights has put us in a position to transfer additional games to our fields, helping keep other clubs playing matches and in the competition. We couldn’t have supported these extra games without lighting on the second field.”

To allow construction vehicles to safely enter and exit the site, motorists are asked not to park within 5 metres of the concrete barriers or on the upslope side of the road. Pedestrian access through the site will generally remain open during the reconstruction works. However, there may be periods where access is restricted due to hazardous or very noisy work. Early notice will be given to the community regarding these restricted times. AMC has provided an indicative timeframe, which aims at having works completed by the end of March 2023. Council and AMC will look to provide further updates and more accurate timeframes wherever possible. For more information on these and other repairs, visit tweed.nsw.gov.au/flood-recovery-works

Drafts of the temporary works design drawings have been received and are under review. The detailed design for the final remediation is due in the coming weeks. The proposed construction process at the Scenic Drive slips will involve site establishment, excavation of slip areas, soil nailing, concrete shotcreting, foundation works, wall construction, backfill, drainage, road pavement, asphalting, line marking and safety barrier works.

The plan outlines the contributions developers must provide towards local infrastructure including community facilities such as community centres and multipurpose spaces. The plan has been updated to reflect the need for these new facilities to meet the latest growth projections.

This is a new plan that outlines contributions developers must provide towards the maintenance of roads as a result of transporting large volumes of goods and materials in heavy vehicles, instead of imposing these added maintenance costs on ratepayers.

To allow construction vehicles to safely enter and exit the site, motorists are asked not to park within 5 metres of the concrete barriers or on the upslope side of the road.

SES to improve flood response

President of Tweed District Rescue Squad VRA, Drew Carr, said the collision had re sulted in two males, one in each vehicle, being “trapped by compression” for some time. “They required medical intervention and res cue,” Mr Carr said.

“The Tweed did not experience any significant failures of gauges or flood mitigation infrastruc ture during the February-March 2022 event. “Some damage to infrastructure did occur and this is being addressed. However, it does not pose a major risk for the next flood season.”

A HORRIFIC accident at Chinderah saw two men airlifted to hospital in a critical condition and traffic in gridlock through Kingscliff on Wednesday, August 17. Emergency services were called at around 3pm to reports of a two-motor vehicle acci dent near the Tweed Coast Road and Crescent Street intersection with persons trapped in their vehicles. A man aged in his 70s and a man in his 50s were trapped in their vehicles for some time. Both were eventually freed by emergency services, with the pair suffering significant ab dominal, pelvic, arm and leg injuries.

SES released a statement on August 19, saying it would introduce an overhauled warning system in September under the new nationwide Aus tralian Warning System, a national three-tiered warning framework which will cover all emer gency services organisations and all hazards. Warnings will still be issued via the SES and theTheABC.Bureau of Meteorology told The Weekly they have also participated in a number of postflood inquiries, which are intended to identify potential for improvements to flood preparation and“Further, response.asstandard practice, whether or not there has been significant flooding, NSW SES and the Bureau regularly review the provision and use of flood observations, forecasts and warnings, as part of the Service Level Specifi cation for Flood Warning Networks,” A BOM spokesperson said.

TWEED SHIRE Council has been working with the SES to help improve the organisation’s floodPriorcommunications.tothefloods, the local SES had used numerous strategies to prepare Tweed Shire residents for a big flood, including creating more Community Resilience Teams, providing de tailed flood mapping, and holding community meetings, however alerts proved confusing.

“Council officers engage with local SES units on an ongoing basis to provide flood intelli gence and collaboratively learn from flood ex periences,” Tweed Shire Council’s Director of Engineering David Oxenham told The Weekly “Most recently, Council’s Engineer – Flooding and Stormwater has been assisting the SES with a post-2022 flood review of their flood action cards [posted online warnings].

“Emergency services conducted extrication of both patients.

An SES spokesperson told The Weekly: “The NSW SES will review each recommendation which will form part of the NSW Government’s response to the independent flood inquiry.”

Mr Oxenham said it would take some time for recommendations made by the NSW Select Committee inquiry to be adopted by agencies. The independent inquiry stated a “merger of the back offices of the Rural Fire Service and SES has also been recommended to improve performance and capability.” It also found there weren’t enough SES volun teers to cope with the scale of the disaster and recommended a recruitment drive.

Major reconstruction works on a large timber bridge near Burringbar

Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot said the rail trail will be a unique opportunity to showcase our beautiful region. “It will also provide an important tourism boost for our local economy,” she said. Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said funding for the rail trail was something he had worked on with Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin (as our representative for Murwillumbah). “It’s going to be such an important tourism boost for rural communities like Burringbar, Mooball and Crabbes Creek,” Mr Provest said. When completed, the full length of the North ern Rivers Rail Trail will preserve the 132km scenic rail corridor between Murwillumbah and Casino, creating a safe, car-free connection between the villages and towns along the route. Meanwhile, a key piece of state legislation was recently passed enabling the Transport Minister to grant 30-year leases to local governments for disused NSW government-owned corridors to be used for recreational and tourism purposes.

THE MURWILLUMBAH to Crabbes Creek Rail Trail is set to open early next year as works on the final surface started this month. The new compacted gravel surface is being laid at several points along the trail, including Burringbar, Stokers Siding and South Murwil lumbah, according to an update from Tweed ShireCouncilCouncil.saidworks will progress at about 300 to 400 metres per day until it is completed later thisCouncilyear. project director Iain Lonsdale said he was pleased with the progress so far, which has removed almost all of the railway track along the 24km Tweed section of the trail.

“We are feeling confident this next phase of works on the trail surface will be a success.”

Mr Page attempted to address concerns that the corridor risks being sold off.

“This will keep the rail corridor in public own ership, enable a rail trail to be established, and effectively prevent parts of the corridor being sold to private interests,” he said. Residents against the rail trail project gathered at the former Murwillumbah Railway Station on Saturday, August 20, to call for both a rail line and trail solution.

“In January, we laid two test sections of the gravel surface and they performed very well during that period of heavy rain and are show ing the level of durability we were looking for.

No turning back on NAB branch closures

Murwillumbah local Ron Douglas visited The Weekly office to share his frustration with theMrclosures.Douglas has banked with NAB for the past 50 years and said he felt the closures were “out of step” with community expectations. Residents also expressed their outrage online, with some customers suggesting they would switch banks and others referencing the pop ulation growth in Murwillumbah.

The Murwillumbah NAB branch is believed to have opened in 1982, although a specific date was not available at the time of print. THOUGHTS: Do you bank with NAB and use the branch? believe the branch should remain

“But Murwillumbah is growing, why close a branch in a growth area?” questioned one res ident, following the recent Census data which indicates Murwillumbah is the fastest growing area in the Tweed with 35 per cent growth in the past five years. In a further blow, NAB confirmed it will also close the ATM on Murwillumbah’s main street.

He also highlighted that NAB are establishing a new location at Tweed City.

It should also be noted, NAB own the Mur willumbah property at 38 Murwillumbah Street and Mr Tronson said a final decision about the property is yet to be made.

“Based on changing customer behaviour, we are also investing in the region with a new lo cation opening in Tweed Heads towards the end of September,” he said. “Located in the Tweed Heads Shopping Cen tre [Tweed City], this new location offers a new-look design and open plan layout where locals will be able to experience the new self-ser vice digital bar, new meeting spaces, as well as the same friendly faces and services they are familiar with.”

Mr Tronson stressed that there would be no job losses from the branch closures. “Importantly, there will be no job losses. We will be working closely with our colleagues on opportunities for them to continue to support customers either through other branches or across phone and digital channels,” he said.

ONE OF the longest running bank branches in the Tweed Shire, National Australia Bank (NAB), has announced it will close its Murwil lumbah branch on November 10 and Kingscliff branch on September 29. The announcement has outraged several NAB customers who have contacted The Weekly to express their disappointment with the decision and call for a petition to save the branch.

“Over the past few years, fewer customers are coming into these locations, with more than half visiting once in the last year and more than 70 per cent using other branches in the area.” Mr Tronson said branch teams at Kingscliff and Murwillumbah will be working with cus tomers to assist them with various banking alternatives such as Australia Post.

By Jonathon Howard Ron Douglas is a longtime NAB customer who's concerned that he's losing his local taken by Ron Armstrong of the National Australia Bank

The Weekly took these and more questions to the NAB head office and received a response from NAB retail customer executive Wesley Tronson.Inshort, Mr Tronson said the decision was made based on customers turning to online banking.“Asmore and more customers are choosing to bank online, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Kingscliff and Murwillumbah branch es in the coming months,” Mr Tronson said. “Increasingly, Australians are banking digi tally, with more than 94 per cent of customer interactions now taking place over the phone, by video or online.

“These include our partnership with Australia Post and the Bank@post service, as well as con necting with our mobile bankers, home lending specialists, or business bankers in person, or for phone or video appointments,” he said.

“Bank@post is available at Australia Post out lets in Kingscliff and Murwillumbah.”

• Getting rid of Resilience NSW.

• A dedicated emergency management task force at the highest level of NSW Govern ment.

WE REACHED a significant milestone in our recovery from the February/March flood disaster this week with the release of the recom mendations of the 2022 NSW Flood Inquiry. The findings were damning and did not pull any punches in terms of the massive systemic failure of the NSW rescue and recovery agen cies, Resilience NSW and the SES. I asked the Premier to release the report in the Northern Rivers because it was our report about our disaster, and our community had a lot invested in it. I thanked NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet for releasing the report in Lismore and committing to implementing all 28 recommendations, as I had demanded from almost day one, when I said we needed a report done and it needed to be different. I said this report needs to be the one that breaks the pattern of inquiry, report, little or noTenterfieldaction. Shire in the neighbouring Northern Tablelands was also disaster declared and they too are interested in how we prepare for, and respond to, natural disasters. Along with many local residents, I made a submission to this independent inquiry and I thank the former Police Commissioner Mick Fuller and Professor Mary O’Kane for their professional and comprehensive work on this inquiry and how they addressed what our com munity put forward. My submission to the inquiry was titled Re sponding to a humanitarian disaster: Rescue, Recovery, Rebuild, Adapt and Prepare, and I made recommendations for what we can do. I am pleased to see the inquiry’s 28 recom mendations that address these areas and there of course will be more.

The key recommendations cover issues I had been raising since the flood:

• A g reater emphasis on affordable housing in the Northern Rivers and Northern Ta blelands with adaptation plans for towns to be developed. It is close to six months since the disastrous floods and storms devastated our region. I have been lobbying all that time to secure much-need ed support and direction for our communities. The recommendations give us a positive direc tion for recovery and preparedness for future events, if not certainty yet. Yes we need a sense of urgency from the NSW Government. Yes we needed a lot more to have happened yesterday. I will continue to lobby for our community to get what they need and to be involved in all aspects of our recovery, and work to represent our interests.

Dep Capt Bowe said at 4.29am, emergency services responded to a single vehicle accident involving a car colliding with a tree on Bilambil Road at Bilambil. “The occupant/s had decamped prior to ar rival of Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Police Force,” Dep Capt Bowe said. “Slow it down, follow the speed limit. Drive to conditions. Stay off your phone. “Remain alert. Don’t drink and drive. If you want to drink, plan ahead and use a taxi or phone a friend to commute. “We all want to make it home safely to our friends and families.”

RESIDENTS GATHERED at ceno taphs across the Tweed Shire last week to commemorate the Battle of Long Tan and Vietnam Veterans’ Day on Thursday, August 18. The Tweed has many local Vietnam War veterans, including some who took part in Australia’s bloodiest conflict during the war, the Battle of Long Tan. The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th century and tragically claimed the lives of 521 Aussies and wounded 3,000.Thearrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Viet nam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s in volvement in the war. By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. On August 18, 1966, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, Australian soldiers fought one of their fiercest battles of the war.

The men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, faced a force of some 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. The battle was fought in wet and mud dy conditions during a heavy tropical downpour.Bytheend of the day, 17 Austra lians had been killed in action and 25 were wounded, one of whom died a few days later. This was the largest number of casualties in a single oper ation since the Australian Task Force had established its base at nearby Nui Dat the previous April. Member for Lismore Janelle Saf fin said she wanted to honour those who fought and fell during that fierce battle in a rubber plantation 56 years ago.“We also recognise those who served on the home front and the communities who supported the war effort,” she said. “Lest We Forget.”

THE TWEED has a brilliant new band pumping out rocking sounds from the ‘90s and they have already picked up fans from bands such as Wolfmother and Grin spoon.TheTyler Durdens were started in Bo gangar by Aaron Bowditch, who was play ing at home during the lockdowns when his wife suggested he start a band featuring the music he loved from the ‘90s.

“I thought it was a really good idea be cause no one’s doing it and the ‘60s to ‘80s rock had been a bit exhausted,” Aaron told The Weekly. “There were so many good songs on the radio then which just don’t get played anymore and we want to keep playing them and let people keep hearing them.” Aaron came up with some musicians, had a couple of jams and started gigging. “About May 2020, as soon as we could go out [of lockdown], we were practicing at Round Mountain Rehearsal Room,” he“It’ssaid.a big barn shed dedicated to bands with a massive stage, PA, light show. The Tyler Durdens, named after Brad Pitt’s character in ‘90s cult movie Fight Club, played their first gig at Cabarita Beach Surf Club in December and the place went off. “None of us are proper singers, so we kept advertising for a singer and we sang to get by,” Aaron said. “It got to the point that we were all mates and didn’t want anyone else to come in and our voices were getting better, so we thought bugger it.

THE SOLUTION

There is a clear difference between decking oils and water-based deck coatings – a decking oil works by penetrating the surface of the timber, whereas a water-based coating will form a protective film on the surface.

A high-quality decking oil protects timber and maintains the natural look and feel of wood. With so many options available on the market, it can be difficult to decide which oil is right for your deck. Designed for and proven to work in the harshest of Australian environments, CUTEK® exterior timber oils truly penetrate and diffuse deeply into the wood core to protect it against liquid and gas-phase moisture. A core design feature of CUTEK® oil is its ability to stay mobile within the timber, actively working to displace and control moisture from the inside out, significantly improving dimensional stability and providing exceptional long-term protection. Additional maintenance coats throughout the timber’s life will have an accumulative effect, increasing the efficacy of the CUTEK®protection.oilsalso

Which CUTEK® exterior decking oil is right for your project?

Applied as a clear oil, CUTEK® will allow your timber to naturally lighten and silver when exposed to the sun’s UV rays. If you would like to retain the natural, freshly oiled look of your timber, or you would like to alter the colour to meet design requirements, a CUTEK® Colourtone can be added to CUTEK® oils. Because CUTEK® diffuses deeply into the wood, it will continue to provide moisture protection and improve dimensional stability even if the timber is allowed to weather and grey off.

AS THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) moves to a La Nina alert for a wet spring and summer, The Weekly contacted a number of organi sations to see what changes have been made to better prepare for floods in the immediate future, with Telstra recommending communities look to satellite communications for reliable internet.Thecritical and life-threatening failure of communications during the floods left resi dents unable to contact emergency services or family, while ATMs and EFTPOS were down for days and rescue teams struggled to buy fuel for rescues, the news from Telstra and NBN Co is hardly reassuring.

The Weekly will follow up with DPI for com ment in a future edition.

“Over the last number of years, NBN has invested in a diverse range of network infra structure to maintain network resilience and keep customers connected during times of naturalHowever, disaster.none of these seem designed to cover areas of the size impacted by the floods and many NBN Co customers are highly critical of Sky Muster satellite and the NBN.

“This included both on the ground assess ments and community feedback,” the NBN Co spokesperson said. “We have commenced work to improve the resilience of the network as a result of that work, including raising NBN equipment in key areas.

A NBN spokesperson said since the floods, “NBN has completed work to better understand flood events and identify ways we can build further resilience into the network.”

“We agree with the recommendation that evolving technologies, including satellite, have an important role to play in providing coverage given the majority of disruptions are caused by mains power outages,” the spokesperson said. “Given the growing frequency of these events it makes sense for relevant authorities, safety agencies, businesses and communities to assess their needs for satellite backup.”

“An investigation was immediately launched and a senior member of Council’s Building and Environmental Health Unit visited the site the following day,” Council told The Weekly. “Approximately 100 eel-tailed catfish were found deceased, prompting water quality tests to be conducted at four sites along an 800m section of the creek.” The tests ruled out any issues with water quality and the matter has been escalated to the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

A Council spokesperson said it received a report on Monday, August 15, of a number of dead fish discovered on private property along Reserve Creek over the preceding few days.

Internet remains at risk of floods Fish kill mystery

A Telstra spokesperson said moving telco infrastructure such as mobile towers and ex changes was difficult, “but we will continue to engage with stakeholders to explore where this makes sense.”

Around 100 eel-tail catfish were found dead on the riverbank at Reserve Creek recently

A FISH kill at Reserve Creek earlier this month was investigated by Tweed Shire Council and found to not be related to water quality in the Tweed River.

“The results complied with Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality (2000),” Council said. “In keeping with the NSW DPI Fisheries protocol for the investigation and reporting of fish kills, the results have been sent to the NSW Department of Primary Industries for further assessment.”

A resident is believed to have raised the matter with Council to investigate.

The Weekly also followed up with Council to determine whether water quality, or black water was the cause of the fish kill.

Uniting Director of Property and Housing Simon Furness said Uniting had already met with residents at the home and their families to discuss the redevelopment.

UNITING KINGSCLIFF is inviting locals to have their say on a proposal for a $150 million redevelopment of their aged care facility at Kingscliff.UnitingNSW say the redevelopment is de signed to meet the growing needs of seniors in the area, by providing 120 residential aged care beds, including dementia care places, and around 235 independent living apartments. The facility at 24A Kingscliff Street, Kingscliff, currently has 80 residential aged care beds.

“As part of a community consultation pro cess, Uniting will host in-person and online information sessions for the community and key stakeholders in the coming weeks,” Mr FurnessUnitingsaid.Head of Property Development Adri an Ciano told The Weekly the proposal was still in the early stages. “We have been through some site investiga tions,” he said. “We have engaged a team of Tier 1 consultants and have been looking at all the issues and constraints and have proposed some solutions.

The plans will be placed on public exhibition early next year, with Uniting aiming for the first stage of construction to begin in 2024, if approved. If you have any questions, visit the project website at www.uniting.org/unitingkingscliff, call 1800 864 846, or email at ask@uniting.org

By Jo Kennett

The plans include an outdoor pool, function and activity spaces, seniors’ gym, hairdressing salon, café, day spa, consultation rooms for medical and allied health professionals, cinema, chapel, wellness centre, a central village hub, open green spaces, landscaped gardens and rooftop gardens.

“We run assisted living as a start, for instance if they don’t want to cook every day. “This means if your partner has to go to resi dential care and you are still on the same site, you can still see each other.” The proposal is to allow integration between residents and the broader community.

NOW it isn’t new, but it cer tainly is delicious and some thing to put on your must-try list – Organic Coffee Con centrate from Jeremy at Raw Earth Organics. Jeremy tells me that there is no heat used in their brewing process which means the coffee con centrate is sweeter, smoother and less acidic than other coffee concentrates – there is also no sugar, no addi tives and no preservatives. It is best served as a cocktail mixer, with a milk of your choice, with hot or cold wa ter, coconut water or even as part of your cooking (a delicious tiramisu is spring ing to Makemind!).sure you pop by to see Greg at the Pecan Oil stall when you’re next at the market. Greg is a local grower based in the Wardrop Valley has a pecan orchard – Greg hand press es the pecans to create his miracle-working pecan oil. Greg tells me that pecan oil is one of the world’s best kept secrets and as it is a highly nourishing nut, and it has high levels of zinc. This means that it is great for the skin – it fights acne, skin discolouration, it makes the skin look radiant – and it can also be beneficial for ex pectant mum’s baby bumps and c-section scars – so get in mummas and mums-to-be!

The Weekly dropped by the Cooloon Children’s Centre this week for a photo shoot with the children and their amaz ing range of teddies. From stuffed rats to animals too heavy to carry, the kids brought a wide range of lovable characters and are eager to share the fun with others.

“Our area has been flood affected, so this win is very exciting for the community.” If you discover you are holding the winning ticket, contact The Lott on 131 868 to begin the process of claiming your prize.

Tweed City News team manager Sue Wood said she hoped the winner discovered their win soon.

Teddies to assemble for picnic

One of the event organisers Judy Ra dich said the event was designed to engage with parents and families with young children to raise awareness of child protection.“It’sanimportant event that’s a lot of fun, but also has serious side,” she said.

“It’s wonderful news for our Wednesday, and we’re so happy to have sold another first-prize-winning entry in Lucky Lotteries,” she“Thissaid.is our seventh first-prize-winning entry in Lucky Lotteries and we’re very happy for the mystery winner. We hope they discover the winning news in our outlet.

The Tweed player won the guaranteed first Prize in Lucky Lot teries Super Jackpot draw 10647, drawn Wednesday, August 17, but is yet to claim the prize. The ticket is unregistered, so officials from The Lott have no way of contacting the ticket holder to break the winning news and must wait for them to come forward and claim their prize.

LOTTERY OFFICIALS are on the hunt for one Tweed Heads resident or visitor who scored $100,000 in a recent Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot draw – they just don’t know it yet.

The winning entry was purchased at Tweed City News.

MATTHEW DUNN has done it again, claiming the Riverview Hotel Murwillum bah Cup on Friday, August 19.The $70,000 prize purse was the biggest ever for a re gional race day and Tweed River Jockey Club chairman Bernie Quinn OAM said it was a “cracking event”. “How good was that for Murwillumbah and the Tweed, we are back,” he said. “It was such a huge day. We turned over about $1.5 million for the day, which is the most we’ve ever done. “It was just so exciting, there was no complaints and everyone had a great time.” Mr Quinn said he want ed to thank the Riverview Hotel, as well as the Jockey Club staff and grounds staff.

Trainer Matthew Dunn has qualified Impasse and Badoosh for The Big Dance after the pair finished onetwo in the Murwillumbah Cup.Friday’s 1550m feature at Murwillumbah was a qual ifier for The Big Dance, a $2 million race over 1600m at Randwick on Melbourne CupDunnday.said the Murwil lumbah Cup had been the target for both Impasse and Badoosh for some time. “It doesn’t work out very often, but it did today, and they were both very well-rid den,” Dunn told Sky Thor oughbred Central. “They got into positions that I thought were a bit vulnerable early, but they showed their competitive ness late in the race. “It’s a difficult feeling be cause I feel for the owners of the second horse, but they’re both now qualified, and fingers crossed we can go through to The Big Dance.”

MURWILLUMBAH Cup Day

Bilambil will host the NRRRL grand fi nals after a brutal contest at Murwillumbah where the Jets came out on top 14-10 to earn the week off and a home grand final. Led by mercurial halfback Harry Fitzhugh and tough lock forward Hayden Hansen the Jets came out on top and will be hard to beat down in the Valley. In a day of undefeated teams getting rolled, Cudgen annihilated the unbeaten Jets in reserve grade to advance with the old boy ‘Scruff’ O’Grady turning back the clock in a clinical performance even with two stints in the bin!

The unbeaten Ladies Hornets got run down late by Marist Brothers and will need to go the long way around to get to the bigThedance.Mustangs will front up against a confident Evans Head this Saturday in Murwillumbah to earn another shot at theQuickJets. shout out to Mustangs Rakoia Smith who suffered a severe leg injury on the weekend - get well soon Rak. I still think the Sharks can run second and be a genuine threat and the Cowboys are a confident team. Melbourne look like they are timing their run to perfection and who would ever write them off come September. Parramatta are too erratic for my liking and I don’t think the Rabbitohs can put games back to back from the bottom spots. The Broncos could still miss out and they are simply making up the numbers. I feel the Roosters would have everyone a little nervous at this stage and be trying to dodge them round one of the finals with a massive game against the Storm this week coming up. The weekend certainly highlighted the divide between the top and the bottom teams. The five at the bottom end simply don’t measure up to the rest. The Tigers threw in the towel on the weekend and that is a major concern for them as a club going forward. The women’s premiership kicked off on the weekend and the standard of footy is getting better andHowbetter.impressive was the 17 year old half Jessie Southwell for the Knights - what a career she will have. Mr Munz said the exhibition presents a series of paintings based on photographs. “They are not intended to be photorealistic, but instead are a mid-20th century style that had the primary goal of capturing the essence of a photograph on canvas,” he said. “My paintings are intended as landscapes. In Western art, landscape appears initially as richly decorative backgrounds to human action in medieval religious painting.”

THE REGENT is honoured to present the Youth Poetry SLAM on Friday, August 26, brought to you by Sarah Temporal, creator of Poets Out Loud, and host for the night. Sunset Soirées (LIVE MUSIC ON BALCONY)

We’ve busily scrambled to squeeze in all the fantastic films coming in September and now have a chock-a-block jam-packed array of cinematic displays coming your way! Not only the seven cinephile-satisfying connoisseur choices from the upcoming Travelling Film Festival, but also a wide assortment of documentaries (Franklin on Father’s Day being a very special event with The Regent taking part in a simulcast Q&A starring Bob Brown post-screening) In the movie mix are new hit releases –including, shock horror …a horror!! Jeepers Creepers: Reborn – plus foreign films (I’m particularly looking forward to Hit the Road – billed as a Persian version of Little Miss Sunshine vibes), and of course a few kid’s flicks for the school holidays. Deciding to embrace the QLD holiday time too, we’re extending opening hours, from 10am, six days a week, starting Friday 16th September, for three weeks. Luckily, the films have suddenly gone from ridiculously long to short and sweet, so we’ve got six choices per day (five on Sundays) on our single screen. The one epic exception is the re-release of Avatar, priming us for the much-anticipated sequel coming this December. Thirteen years have passed since the original smashhit took the world by storm, which itself was a decade-long production, as James Cameron’s team pushed inventions of 3D capture and cutting-edge CGI technology along the way, ushering in a new method of virtually creating camera angles in postproduction. It will be interesting to see how the once mind-blowing graphics hold up these days, and how far they’ve come for the next. We won’t have to wait as long for the following four – yes, FOUR! – installments of the emerging franchise, with the original release dates already delayed for two years due to Covid, we should be set to see one every Christmas until 2025! I wonder if they’ll all verge on three hours duration… Such dramatic extravaganzas could really use an intermission! Unfortunately, The Regent can’t project 3D films, though personally I find them sea-sickening anyway (despite being impervious to actual nausea at sea!) So, we will enjoy the visual feast in traditional 2D. 12:00PM 2:15PM 4:15PM 7:00PM 9:00PM 12:00PM Isabella 2:00PM Oma 4:00PM Soirées (LIVE MUSIC ON BALCONY) 5:00-7:00PM Kernaghan: Boy From The Bush 6:00PM the Crawdads 8:15PM The Rise of Gru 12:00PM 2:00PM 3:45PM 4:45PM Boy From The Bush 7:00PM SEPTEMBER (Encore) 12:00PM

Mr Munz quoted an Ian Burn book, National Life & Landscapes, and said in Australia, “land scape painting often became synonymous with depicting national identity”. “Today, contemporary art is much more di verse, characterised by Indigenous expression, challenging artistic codes, personal identities and global warming,” he said. The paintings include street signs, light poles, power lines, roofs, roads, houses and vehicles.

“The repeating cruciform structure of electric ity poles invoking the cultural origins of this region’s built environment and the fossil fuels that power it,” he said. The exhibition is on display at Keith cafe until Thursday, September 15. Imani Hannaford at the Youth Slam in 2021

Hi, I’m Julie Sims, affectionately known as Jewels, and I am a fully registered Civil Celebrant with a lot of love to share! I live close to the scenic village of Tyalgum in the Tweed Valley and love nothing more than marrying couples in the beautiful surrounds of the caldera.

I have performed both formal and alternative ceremonies for many years and enjoy age old traditions such as hand-fasting and smudging with sage. I offer a professional, ethical and heartfelt ceremony with a hint of magic!

My gift is to find what is unique to each couple to create beautiful moments and Lynnememories.from Murwillumbah left me a beautiful testominal: “Michael and I are big dreamers, but we could never have dreamt of having a celebrant as perfect as Julie. She radiates warmth, love and a wonderful sense of calm. She literally sparkles! Julie’s patience and ‘ever-present’ smile kept us calm, even when the wheels seemed to be falling off. To marry amidst a global pandemic is not to be recommended but should you find yourself in a similar situation, rest assured, Julie will guide you Mythrough.Motto is “I believe in a thing called love” To find out more please get in touch via email: jewelsofthecaldera@gmail.com

or email trades@theweekly.net.au

JEWEL OF THE CALDERA PHONE 0474 256 222 TWEED VALLEY To advertise in The Weekly,

The loves in my life apart from being a celebrant include my three children, my husband of 31 years, my friends and family, being a support worker, teaching belly dancing, playing music and being a part of this wonderful community. I like to work with other local businesses like Katrina Cram Photography Murwillumbah, Joeys Nest Chillingham, Flutterbies Café Tyalgum & Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat to name a few. My services include Weddings, Elopements, Commitment Ceremonies, Vow Renewals, Naming Ceremonies, Baby Blessings and Hen’s Celebrations.

Crossing the Bar by Alfred Lord Tennyson Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have cross’d the bar

By Jo Kennett THE MURWILLUMBAH Mustangs will have to beat Evans Head to earn a place in the grand final after going down in a shock 14-10 loss to Bil ambil in the semi finals in front of their home crowd on Sunday, Au gustMustangs21. coach Brendon Hill said they were disappointed “but Bilambil was a better team on the day.”

“There were a few things we wanted to fix which we seemed to have done but it was the story of our year’ we played good for one half and the other one was terrible. “It felt like if we got one more try in the second half it would have taken the wind out of their sails. “They just had the momentum in the second half and were hard to stop and then they got a try on the hooter.” Lanston said they had a lot of good young players who were really keen for next year. “We lost a few of our most expe rienced to other clubs but we were

“We tried not to let the emotions get the better of us; we just try to keep it as we have for the last few weeks,” he said. “I was really happy with our de fence.

“Our execution and a few dropped balls pretty well lost us the game,” Hill said. “It became a bit of a defensive strug gle with Bilambil getting a couple of opportunistic tries with kicks.

“We’ve lost twice this year, once to Evans and once to Mustangs “I’ve definitely learned not to knock Evans; they beat Byron on the week end and they are a good team. “Whoever we verse it will be tough but we are looking forward to it.”

WOMEN’S PENNANT, this year, certainly produced top quality per formances in all grades. Cudgen Leagues, Kingscliff and South Tweed Heads, leading the field in Grade Two, definitely produced great spectator entertainment with super close point scoring throughout theHowever, competition.the play-off between Kingscliff and South Tweed Heads resulted in Kingscliff being the victors to go forward to the Region One playoffs in October.

Special report by Judy Tuckey

“We had a chance at the end, we scored with ten seconds to go which would have levelled the scores with a kick to come but it was a forward pass.Hill said it was especially disap pointing losing the home final after being minor premiers and undefeated. “I don’t think we played anywhere near our potential,” he said. “We have a lot of improvement to do if we want to win the comp.” “We play Evans at Murbah this week; we had a draw with them last time Evans, but it’s definitely going to be “Theydifferent.liketo use the football a lot more, so they can put a score on you pretty quick so we’ve just got to put our heads down and work hard.” Jets captain Tom Rolles said it will be great for Bilambil to have the home final after their victory over favourites Murwillumbah.

IT’S HEARTIEST congratulations and ‘hats off’ to Cabarita “old boy” Damien Delgado (Tweed Heads BC) and South Australia’s Chris Flavel (Lockley BC) on their outstanding performances at the 2022 Common wealth Games conducted at Birming hamDayUK.One at the games resulted in the duo recording a solid win against New Zealand in the morning, and then register a draw against South Africa in Game Two. Day Three matches resulted in the lads being back in the winner’s circle with a strong win against Wales. With the preliminary games com pleted, Damien and Chris were in the mix of the four top scorers on the leader board to go forward to thePittedplayoffs.against England witnessed top form being displayed by the Auss ies as they eliminated their opposition with a very solid margin to then go forward to challenge Scotland for GOLD on the final day of play. Whilst the lads delivered a solid performance at this level, their op position proved too strong on the day as they relegated the Aussies to second place and a Silver medal. Bravo! “The Mustangs had a heap of op portunities but we were able to limit their scoring and I think that won us the game.
