Test Drive a Nissan Leaf EV! We have 24, 30 & 40 kWh cars at half the new price. Australian electricity prices have risen by up to 18.3 per cent under a decision by the Australian Energy Regulator due to increased cost of generation due to global rises in coal and gas prices. The increases, which came into effect from July, amount to more than $250 a year based on ACCC figures putting the average residential electricity bill at $1,434. In light of Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian’s inflammatory comments the other day at the Na tional Press Club in Canberra — one has to wonder why on Earth we are allowing members of the Chinese Communist Party to use this na tionally televised platform to sprout Chinese Government propaganda? The Chinese Communist Party has ill intentions towards Australia, and they are a threat to peace and stabil ity in our region. It is absolute madness for the Na tional Press Club and the taxpayer funded ABC to roll out the red car pet and give a soap box to people and hostile foreign governments who are clearly acting against Australia’s sovereign national interests. They should be banned from ap pearing again. Matt Eggleston, West Perth, WA

Road contractors needed I completely agree with Bob Green ‘Council needs road contractors’ (TVW, August 11). Private contractors will have the skills, in my opinion. In many coun tries of the world, the roads would have been repaired very quickly indeed, and the repairs would last. From my observations of our current pothole repair crews, bless ‘em. Sadly no one could care less about the quality of work, again in my opinion. Don Rennie, Murwillumbah Rail Trail is going ahead Mike Yarrow’s letter (TVW, August 11) was aptly titled ‘Wrong, wrong, and wrong on rail trail’ because ev ery sentence he wrote was wrong, beginning by claiming I had said “opponents wanting to prevent the rail lines never put in submissions”. In fact, it was perfectly clear I was talking about people wanting to run tourist railways in response to a letter by David McCabe (TVW, July 14) saying that the opportunity for a tourist railway had been lost. I correctly reported the facts when I wrote, “Anyone who wanted to avail themselves to the opportunity to run tourist rail services had al most two decades to come forward but none did. Nobody even made a submission to the parliament when sections of the corridor, including Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, were closed and made available for a trail in 2020.” The rail trail is going ahead because detailed professionally prepared costings, feasibility and cost-bene fit analyses of the project had been submitted to the government. No proposal had been submitted by any one proposing to use the railway for a tourist train since the failure of Larry Anthony’s Ritz Rail in 2002, some two years before the govern ment-run services ceased. He goes on to claim that I said the Georgetown to Croydon railway was “a waste of taxpayer’s money”. In fact, I said nothing of the sort. David McCabe had raised it as an example of a successful tourist railway and I had responded with: “A tourist rail way being opened after almost two decades of neglect, as would have been the case in Murwillumbah, would be unprecedented.” I contin ued, pointing out that railway “was still operated by Queensland Rail, no doubt at a substantial loss” meaning it was not comparable to our aban doned railway. Next, he claims I said, “local peo ple would be upset to see $10 million in taxpayers’ money put into light rail here”. In fact, I wrote, “I very much doubt ratepayers would have been willing to see ten million dol lars of their funds spent on a train.” There is a huge difference between “taxpayers” and “ratepayers”. In any case, $200,000 annually would amount to about four cents per week for each Tweed resident. Meanwhile, ratepayers contribute $3 million for swimming pools and $9 million on parks and gardens.

Greg Clitheroe, Murwillumbah No to dogs and cats in Koala Beach Yes, we agree with Brian who wrote to The Weekly Letters (August 11) about a few of the residents of Koala Beach who ignore the rules about no cats and dogs allowed. Don’t move into the estate or have friends visit if you want to bring a cat or dog. Easy solution, every other residential estate in NSW can easily accommodate you. Fortunately, most residents happily stick to the rules, and it is why they live in this natural haven, close to everything, but surrounded by trees, birds, koalas, and lots of wildlife. Thankfully, the coastal koalas we have in the estate are not being at tacked by dogs and cats. A bonus is, we don’t have to lis ten to barking dogs or be attacked by dogs when we walk around the reserves.Catsare not killing our birds and bandicoots. We even had a wallaby in the garden this morning, it is a privilege to live here. This is paradise that cannot just be created overnight. Koala Beach is here because a lot of hard work has been put into pre serving the wildlife and habitat for us to value, enjoy, respect. Paula & Lester Searle, Pottsville Support for Probus Club It was good to see a letter from the Banora Point Probus Club in TVW August 11. This would seem to be the only way for service clubs to ‘advertise’, since the cessation of the much-needed community news section. So many clubs are struggling to stay afloat and maintain member ship, since the Covid restrictions of recent years. As a member of the Probus Club of Hastings Point Tweed Coast, we can only rely on word of mouth and our website, which is easy to find, and includes our newsletter with upcom ing speakers and outings. Di Mills, Pottsville We are all Australian Why are four out of seven Council lors so ashamed of Australia? Over the last ten years, Tweed Shire Council has earned a sad and deplorable record for disregarding and scorning mainstream Austra lian values, for example not flying the National Flag on Council sites on Australia Day; big spending of ratepayer funds to support the ho mosexual marriage vote; endorsing every unproven ‘climate alarmist’ rant; spending thousands of rate payer dollars on Ron’s (abandoned) ‘tiny slums’ project. However, they have now managed to set a new standard for contemp tuous disregard for we Australians living in the Tweed Shire by remov ing the word “Australia” from local Council gongs and renaming them “Tweed Awards”? Why would they suggest this bit of woke PC meaninglessness but offensive tokenism? The official Council answer is that “some people find the word Australia so offensive that they will not accept an award”. I feel confident that the overwhelm ing majority of Tweed citizens would be honoured to receive an “Australia Day” award, but would decline, or not value, a “Tweed Council” con solation prize. So, if you agree that “Australia” does not matter as much as “Tweed” — do However, nothing.if you are proud to be Australian let your voice be heard. Respond to the Council survey (yoursaytweed.com.au), or send a letter to Tweed Valley Weekly, or phone the councillors. Clinton Beisler, Tweed Heads South Which is the empire? The US has 800 military bases around the world, including 11 in Australia. China has one, just one military base outside of China. This is in Djibouti as part of the international effort to combat piracy. I know some would like to count Chinese controlled offshore reefs as offensive — but they aren’t going anywhere.Australia has many more oil and gas rigs in Bass Strait that impede and hinder safe navigation than Chi na has with its fortified reefs. What is our ABC doing by copying verbatim US propaganda on China? And as well the US propaganda cov erage of Ukraine? Just imagine the local indignation if the Tweed Valley Weekly operated under the same standards accepted by the ABC and the mainstream media? Questions in Media Watch? Time to get some sense of perspec tive here. Do we need substandard nuclear submarines? F35s that need 16 or more hours of maintenance for every hour in the air? Abrams tanks that cannot be deployed north in the ‘wet’ as they are too heavy? Do we need US-trained Austra lian Generals that believe, and give that advice to our politicians, that a catastrophic war with China is ‘win nable’? Let me tell you, a war with China, or Russia, will be nuclear. The US above all realises the qual ity and determination of its military and the assessment is not at all fa vourable to conventional ‘on the ground’ warfare. Redux Vietnam, Iraq and Afghan istan. Cudgera Creek residents protesting against the proposed food hub Meningococcal disease symptoms

NSW Health has advised that although the disease is uncom mon, it can be severe, “so we are urging people who attended the event in the North Byron Parklands on July 21–24 to be alert to the symptoms of meningococcal disease and act immediately if they appear.” If you suspect symptoms of meningococcal disease, please contact a doctor immediately. Symptoms of meningococcal disease are non-specific, but include: sudden onset of fever; headache; neck stiffness; joint pain; a rash of red-purple spots or bruises; sensitivity to light, and nausea and vomiting.

NSW Health said young children may have less specific symptoms, which may include: irritability; difficulty waking; high-pitched crying and a refusal to eat, but not all of the symptoms may be present at once.

NSW HEALTH has been notified of a probable case of me ningococcal disease in a child from the North Coast, the third case of meningococcal disease in a person who attended the Splendour in the Grass festival. One of the cases was a man in his 40s from Sydney, who later died of the disease, prompting authorities to send out warnings to 50,000 festival goers on Friday, August 5.

“Council is sticking to our planning controls and if we can’t stick to what we agree, what’s the point?” Mr Doran said. “How can anybody approve it when significant questions about flooding and the environment haven’t been answered. “People have been having sleepless nights worrying about this, when it was always in the wrong place. “Council has consumed considerable resources in taking this through the DA process when it should have been stopped a long time ago without putting people through that.”

TWEED SHIRE Council has recom mended the Northern Rivers Planning Panel reject the development application (DA) for a food hub at Cudgera Creek, which the panel will rule on next week.

Meningococcal alert

“Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and community from the harmful effects of meningococ cal disease,” NSW Health said in a media statement.

Northern Rivers Planning Panel is the consent authority and will meet on Au gust 23 at 4pm to make a decision after considering Council’s recommendations and all the submissions.

Concerns were also raised about poten tially flooding of properties and pollution of waterways, including Cudgera Creek, which enters the ocean at Hastings Point.

“Under the National Immunisation Program, meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) vaccine is provided free for babies at 12 months, adolescents, and people of all ages with certain medical conditions.”

In NSW, the adolescent dose is delivered through the school vaccination program in Year 10.

NSW Health said children under five and 15 to 25-year-olds were at the greatest risk of contracting the disease.

The Chase Property Investment pro posal consists of 19 industrial sheds, in cluding eight large sheds, internal roads, and a transport terminal with hundreds of truck movements proposed each day. Cudgera Creek resident Mark Doran said the report vindicated the concerns residents had held.

“I’ve got the champagne chilled, but I haven’t popped the cork,” he said. “It’s a very concise report supported by the 400 objections to the development and vindicates our concerns. “The primary problem is it is an indus trial activity in rural zoning and that goes to the heart of the activity. “The report outlines in detail the diffi culties the development would pose and the fact that a lot of questions remain unanswered by the developers suggests that if it is a viable project, it’s in the wrong“Thereplace.were a lot of environmental concerns that were not addressed at all or not properly addressed.” Objections raised in the submissions related to “the appropriateness of the site for the development, traffic and ameni ty impacts, and characterisation of the development as a rural industry when it appears to be an industrial development.”

Wardrop Valley idea remains a possibility

COULD'VE, SHOULD'VE: Former councillor Ron Cooper believes Tweed Shire Council should still push ahead with the Wardrop Valley housing project to aid in the housing crisis.

By Jonathon Howard

FORMER TWEED Shire Councillor Ron Cooper said the flood-free Wardrop Valley affordable housing project, that proposed 200 homes on Council land, remains a possibility with support from the new councillors. Mr Cooper said there remains in-principle support from Mayor Chris Cherry, Cr Reece Byrnes, Cr Meredith Dennis and Cr Nola Firth.“Ialso have some possible support for the project via Rhiannon Brinsmead, which is early but positive,” he said. Mr Cooper is now hopeful the project could be revitalised and aid in the housing crisis. “This is not a ‘told you so moment’, it’s more of a chance to revisit this idea and find a solution to create more affordable/emer gency housing for the Tweed, which is what I originally intended,” he said. The man with the sandwich-board campaign, Mr Cooper ran a strong campaign for Kings cliff in the 2016 Local Government Election, promising to maintain the three-storey height limit.Having won the vote, Mr Cooper found success in formalising the heights of new builds via the Kingscliff Locality Plan, before switching his focus to Council’s community consultation and housing. “We knew that no level of government at the time in 2017 was keeping ahead of people becoming homeless,” he said. “There was simply no system of public housing for the Tweed Shire. Everything I was reading was indicating that housing would be desperately needed by 2020.” With this in mind, Mr Cooper attended many housing conferences and local forums to gain greater knowledge about the need, before for mulating his own idea. He eventually raised the prospect of using Council land at Wardrop Valley, a five-minute drive from Murwillumbah’s CBD, as an op portunity to develop an affordable/emergency housingHowever, project.theidea to shift Council’s focus from the status quo to housing came as a shock to many and Mr Cooper faced criticism, or complete silence. “We sent a letter to the state government for some funding to develop the business plan, to make sure there would never be an ongoing cost to ratepayers,” he said. “To this day, I do not believe Council has received a response to this plan from the state. “Instead, the state government wanted Coun cil, or a landholder, to give a parcel of land to the state and build units, but they were ex pected to sell off two-thirds to pay for the rest. “The model the state government was using could never be useful in the housing market we have here the Tweed Shire today.

THE TWEED is set to produce more beer and sell more avocado trees to the world thanks to strategic partnerships between local busi nesses and the NSW Government, according to Member for Tweed Geoff Provest. Mr Provest said the Regional Job Creation Fund co-invests with businesses in areas like the Tweed Shire that want to grow and create more“Craftjobs.beer production has become quite a niche in the Tweed and the government is sup porting Earth Beer at Cudgen with $140,000 towards their futuristic canning machine, so that many more people get to sample the brews and nine full-time equivalent jobs will be cre ated at the microbrewery,” he said. Mr Provest said a second grant of $340,000 would go to Australia’s oldest and largest spe ciality avocado tree nursery, Anderson Horti culture in Duranbah.

“An $872,000 expansion of the avocado nursery will create 17 Tweed jobs and help the family company export Tweed avo trees around the planet,” Mr Provest said. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the NSW Government’s $140 million Regional Job Creation Fund is on track to create over 6,500 new direct jobs in regional NSW by helping businesses expand production and provide incentives to move operations to the bush. “The Regional Job Creation Fund continues to attract new investment from businesses and enable economic recovery across agriculture, manufacturing and tourism industries and ensure they continue to thrive now and into the future,” Mr Toole said. YOUR THOUGHTS: Do you believe an emergency and affordable housing project at Wardrop Valley should be revisited? The Weekly would like to hear your thoughts or letters via email: editor@theweekly.net.au

Mr Cooper said all Council was asking for, under his tenure, was $40,000 for the devel opment of the plan. “The short-term housing market has now completely overtaken the development side of the Tweed,” he said. “We are finding now that many new devel opments are being snapped up by investors and then placed on the short-term holiday letting pool.” Mr Cooper said he’s heard many stories from locals who were being evicted for renovations and were later listed on short-term holiday letting websites such as Airbnb. Add all of this with the flood and the impact COVID-19, Mr Cooper said there could not be a better time to revisit Wardrop Valley. “I remain hopeful that our current council lors will take the reins on this idea and see it developed to aid in our housing crisis,” he said.

The works will include borehole drilling and will take 2 to 3 days once they’re underway. Council crews will be working on these projects between 9 am and 3 pm. Council will notify those affected in advance of any additional significant impact or inconvenience. Some of the impact of the works may be full temporary road closures for up to 6 hours, traffic controllers, large earthmoving machinery, some construction noise and dust. Pedestrians can still move through the site using footpaths. Restricted access to property or driveways within the work zone during work hours – residents to stay within property or leave outside work hours. Emergency access will be allowed at all times – however, there will be a 15-minute delay to withdraw the drill. Electronic roadworks signage will be in place to advise motorists of the works and provide up to date information. Updates will also be available on Council’s website at tweed.nsw.gov.au/roadworks-closures

Council is undertaking borehole drilling works as part of geotechnical investigations for flood damaged road repairs around the Tweed from next week. Weather permitting, works will commence from Monday 22 August. Road closure notifications have been circulated to property owners affected by the works in the flowing areas:

. Members include community members and representatives from Transport for NSW, Biodiversity Australia, Tweed Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Housing Industry Association, North Coast Community Housing, Momentum Collective, Department of Planning and Environment and Gold Coast Airport. The strategy will look into the housing affordability issue in the Tweed and establish the need. To ensure the practical steps Council might take to respond to this need are identified, work on preparing an Affordable Housing Strategy is in the procurement stage.

Tweed Shire Council wishes to recognise the generations of the local Aboriginal people of the Bundjalung Nation who have lived in and derived their physical and spiritual needs from the forests, rivers, lakes and streams of this beautiful valley over many thousands of years as the traditional custodians of these lands.

Fox control and trapping works will be rolled out across the Tweed next week after a successful program targeting the Tweed Coast fox population last year. Camera monitoring has recorded an increase in fox activity in the coastal bushland areas at Hastings Point, Pottsville, and Fingal Head. This monitoring assisted Council staff to capture 2 foxes at Hastings Point last week. Fox control and trapping works will start on Monday 22 August and continue until Friday 2 September. Foxes are an introduced species and have caused major declines in native animal species in Australia. This fox control program aims to reduce fox numbers to protect native fauna, including koalas and threatened birds such as the Bush Stone-curlews. It will also allow for the recovery of Beach Stone-curlew populations at Hastings Point, especially during the breeding season. A highly-experienced specialist contractor will carry out all works to reduce the overall fox population in the local area. Details of fox control locations Hastings Point: Fox trapping work will be carried out in the crown reserve coastal bushland areas between Hastings Point and Elfran Avenue, Pottsville from Monday 22 August to Friday 2 September. Fox control will be carried out Hastings Point headland from Wednesday 24 to Friday 26 August (inclusive) from 7 pm to 5 am. Yugari Road will be temporarily closed each evening (3 nights) during this time. Pottsville: Fox control works will start on Monday 22 August and continue until Friday 2 September. Associate Professor Mel Taylor, from Macquarie University, said the views of anyone who was impacted by the floods were important. “Your experience is unique and can help make a difference during future floods. By contributing your personal experience you can help reduce flood risk in the future,” A/Prof. Taylor said. “Every story is important. You may have had to evacuate quickly due to rising floodwaters, or perhaps you put your flood plan into practice but the floodwaters didn’t come to your house. We want to hear about a wide range of experiences.” As well as the Northern Rivers, this research is being undertaken in other flooded areas across NSW and Queensland. NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Daniel Austin is encouraging individuals to participate in the research to help safeguard the community in future floods. “Flood preparedness and response is a community effort that goes beyond NSW SES volunteers,” he said. “By sharing your story and experiences through this research, you are providing valuable information to help arm the NSW SES and partner agencies. This research will help inform our plans and response to each region.” This independent research is funded by Natural Hazards Research Australia and supported by the NSW SES and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. The results of the research will be used to inform strategies to improve flood safety in not just NSW and Queensland, but across Australia.

Although spring isn’t here yet, there have already been reports of swooping magpies in the Tweed. Magpies are a much-loved Australian bird however, spring is magpie breeding season which can sometimes involve male birds swooping to protect their young. Don’t be alarmed whenever you see a magpie – not all male magpies swoop. Once the young birds are fledged (hop out of their nest), the male stops swooping. Magpie swooping season is usually over by summer but depending on the weather, it may continue into the summer months. Be aware of the potential risk of swooping magpies and take precautions, such as:

• Attaching a flag to your bike as a deterrent and dismount if swooped – some birds are particularly drawn to swooping people on bikes.

• Leaving the area quickly but calmly, without running. It is illegal to harm or kill magpies. Council will be erecting signs to warn of swooping bird territory so residents can avoid the area. If menacing swooping occurs on Council-managed land such as a park or road reserve, contact Council on 02 6670 2400. If swooping occurs on private property contact the National Parks and Wildlife Service on 02 6670 8600. Keep an eye to the sky as we enter magpie breeding season. This time of year is known for male birds swooping to protect their young.

• Avoiding known swooping areas. Where possible, take a different route away from nesting trees (magpies live in their territories for many years and remember humans).

Be savvy and hear from seniors’ experts

A new research project is seeking to learn from the experiences of those affected by flooding in the Northern Rivers earlier this year, to gather vital insights on preparedness and response and reduce future flood risk.

Conducted by Natural Hazards Research Australia in partnership with Macquarie University, the University of Southern Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology, researchers want to hear directly from anyone impacted or affected by flooding, including residents of the Tweed Shire. There are 2 ways to do this – either by participating in a 45–60 minute interview with a researcher (either online, on the phone or in person) or by completing a survey. Those affected by flooding can take part in either the interviews, the survey or both. Interviews will take place during August and early September. The survey will be available in September but registrations are open now. Register for participation at Leadnaturalhazards.com.au/floods2022researcherandoccupationalpsychologist

The BRRVLN are working in partnership with Brunswick Valley Landcare, Richmond Landcare Inc. and Tweed Landcare Inc. to deliver this“Eligibleproject.sites will be assessed by qualified professionals which may include engineers, soil conservationists and/or bush regenerators,” Ms Stone “Landholderssaid. will be provided with a tailored remediation plan that will outline strategies to mitigate soil erosion, reduce weed infestation and revegetate slips which may include tree planting and direct seeding. “At this stage there is no assurance of financial support for undertaking on-ground works outlined in the remediation plans.” Visit brrvln.org.au/news/northern-rivers-landslip-recovery-project for more information. Landholders can also register their landslips via an electronic form on the above page. Registrations close Thursday 1 September 2022 and landholders will be notified of their eligibility prior to the end of September. on next

A man working outside the Victory Hotel reported seeing two men aged about 30 and 40 years old driving off in the car, which was later seen in Ozone Street, Kingscliff, by a resident who saw a Facebook post about the missing car. Ms Stanojevic said she was “devastated” when the car went missing, as her home on Tweed Valley Way at Burringbar had been severely damaged in the February floods along with the Cyclone Debbie floods in 2017.

ANOTHER BRAZEN car theft took place in broad daylight on the Tweed Coast on Sunday, August 14, and Tweed Police are appealing for camera footage. This time the theft took place at Salt, on North Point Avenue at 3.30pm, as the owner watched on. The white 2022 Audi Q2 with NSW regis tration ESL39H, was taken from the driveway of a Theresidence.ownerof the vehicle, who did not want to be named, said she couldn’t believe how brazen the theft was. “I heard the engine turn on and ran out onto the balcony overlooking the driveway, and I saw the guy in my car,” she said. “He turned it around in our driveway and tore off going north on North Point.” “It’s an incredible inconvenience; I missed an important doctor’s appointment the next day, and even if the car is found, we will still be out of pocket thousands of dollars after hiring a rental car, towing fees, key replacement, et cetera, even with comprehensive insurance.

Police recover stolen car POLICE HAVE recovered a car alleged to have been stolen from a Burringbar woman in Mooball in broad daylight on Wednesday, August 3. Karen Stanojevic owns the Post Shop Cafe in Mooball and said the police were yet to tell her where or how the car was recovered, but she’s “stoked” to have it back. “It was fingerprinted, and they released it, and said I could come and pick it up, and I picked it up Thursday night (August 11),” she told The Weekly, who reported the vehicle theft last week. “It was just a tow truck guy who I saw, so I don’t know if they have charged anyone. “I was stoked to say the least. It was in great condition.“Whoever took it wasn’t vindictive or any thing; it looked like someone had been living in“Thereit. was a blanket in the back and some female clothes, and there was hardly any pet rol used.”

Another brazen car theft

“But more so than any inconvenience, the feeling of violation from this criminal entering my house in broad daylight, while my husband and I were home going in and out of the ga rage, is just horrifying.”

The car owner described the man as Cauca sian, with a “semi-muscular build” and wearing a white sleeveless singlet. The Audi was later seen by witnesses, “fleeing together along Casuarina Way towards Kings cliff with another car” which was described as dark coloured, “possibly dark gray, possibly similar to a Mini Cooper.” “Two witnesses saw the Mini Cooper can vassing the neighbourhood and then speeding up the street with the Audi after they stole it,” the owner said. CCTV footage later confirmed the other vehicle travelling with the Audi was a Mini Cooper.Anyone with information about this incident or CCTV footage taken in the area around 3.30pm last Sunday is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimes toppers.com.au, or call Tweed Police Station on 07 5506 9499.

“This year, Borderline Cats has introduced a sustainable theme to complement the competition aspect of the show, plus promotion of responsible pet ownership for the public.”

Community halls at crossroads

Borderline Cats Inc president Dr Crystal Maher said this year’s Cat Show theme is “It’s Easy Being Green”.

Council currently pays for insurance and completes external maintenance of the halls, but under a new proposal, hall committees would be “responsible for everything”.CrabbesCreek Community Hall pres ident Kylie Dunne said they are being given two options. “One proposal is that we pay for our public liability insurance and a fee to Council for the licence, which will add up to over $3,000,” Ms Dunne said. “That’s a lot of hires at $15 per hour to cover the extra cost, and the small halls don’t have many bookings. “Council has been paying for our pub lic liability insurance for more than 30 years and they bundle all the halls under one policy, so they pay about $5,000 to cover nine halls. “I think Council has forgotten that we are a community hall, not-for-profit and the hall holds our little communities to gether through flood and fire.” Ms Dunne said another option would see Council look after hall hire and fi nances.“Ifthey do hall hire, we can’t be flexible on hire fees,” she said.

Cat Show is back

The event runs from 10am to 4pm. Lunch and refreshments are available in the club throughout the day. Entry fee is $2 for adults and $5 for a family.

“If the Rural Fire Service wants to in form the local community about a fire, we would waive the hire fee, but with Council doing hall hire, by the time it gets approved, the bush fire would have gone.“They would pay all the bills, but if we want to upgrade or fix anything, we have to get approval and Council does the work, but they aren’t fast at fixing things.” Council will meet again with hall committees later this month with more information.Councilisalso asking residents to have their say on the future of Kunghur Hall. The hall was built by the communi ty in 1915 and has been operating as a preschool since 1985 for three days a week, but since 2009, the space hasn’t been shared with the community, apart from the side annex used by a craft group once a Councilmonth.staff will be at the hall on Tuesday, August 23, from 9am to 2pm to answer any questions. Karen Challand was team leader of the Kunghur and Surrounds Community Resilience Team (CRT) which provided critical support during the floods. “Residents have been trying to get Kun ghur Community Hall back to a shared space since 2009,” she said. “We are a remote community with a growing population and no community meeting place. “In February, we were both cut off and without communication. We had nowhere to run an emergency response from, to assist our community. “Kunghur Community Hall is on Kyo gle Road and a pivotal resource for both connection and during emergencies. “The hall has been shared with the preschool in the past, we ask that it be sharedResidentsagain.”can complete the hall survey online: byau/kunghurhall.https://www.yoursaytweed.com.Responsesmustbein4pmonSeptember2.

“Our sponsors have embraced this theme and with their assistance, we have introduced some great new ideas,” he said.

The joint effort follows severe rain events in the Northern Rivers in February and March this year that caused thousands of landslips across the region. Local Landcare coordinator for the Border Ranges Richmond Valley Landcare Network (BRRVLN), Emma Stone, said landslips are a massive concern and there’s a risk of further events.Therecent notification of a likely third La Niña wet weather event this summer has the potential to lead to further landslips. “Many people have experienced impacts to infrastructure and access to their properties,” Ms Stone “Landslipssaid.also pose an ecological threat, opening up the landscape to weed dispersal andTheerosion.”Landslip Recovery project is funded by North Coast Local Land Services. The project will offer support to landholders where landslips on their properties threaten the conservation values of threatened ecolog ical communities such as lowland subtropical rainforest and coastal swamp oak forest or other threatened species. “Eligible sites will be assessed by qualified professionals which may include engineers, soil conservationists and/or bush regenera tors,” Ms Stone said. “Landholders will be provided with a tailored remediation plan that will outline strategies that can be undertaken to mitigate soil erosion and reduce weed recruitment with consider ation to revegetating slips which may include tree planting and direct seeding techniques. “At this stage there is no assurance of finan cial support for undertaking on-ground works outlined in the remediation plans. “Our intention is that landholders can use these plans to undertake self-funded works or to apply for future funding opportunities.” For more information please visit: com/221858076283867viaery-projectorg.au/news/northern-rivers-landslip-recovbrrvln.Landholderscanregistertheirlandslipsanelectronicform:https://form.jotform.

TWEED SHIRE Mayor Chris Cherry and Councillor Nola Firth will leave the warmth and comfort of their homes behind for one night to raise awareness of rising homeless numbers in the Tweed. The councillors will join community leaders from across the Tweed when they participate in the annual Fred’s Place Vinnies Community Sleepout at Seagulls Club at Tweed Heads West on Friday, August 19, from 6pm. The pair will call an empty cardboard box home for the night as they brave the cold to raise awareness and funds for Fred’s Place –the only drop-in centre for homeless people in the “TheTweed.situation with homelessness in the Tweed Shire has reached breaking point,” Mayor Cherry said. “We had already declared a housing emer gency before the COVID-19 migration, now the devastating floods have taken a further 500 homes out of circulation. “We are calling on the owners of short-term holiday rental properties in the Tweed to spare a thought for these people and rent out their homes to those in need. “The 2021 Census figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics recently showed 3,892, or 9.4 per cent of private dwellings in the Tweed were unoccupied on the night of the Census. Think how much that could help if only half of these homes were added to the permanent rental pool.”

They have improved a lot so it will be tough.” In the Ladies League Tag, Trophy Qualifier Mustangs beat Casino 20-14 and play Kyogle in the preliminary fi nal on Saturday. Braydon said the best parts of Youth Parliament were his committee’s debate on energy, environment and climate change.“Thefirst question time was pretty cool,” he said, despite some initial nerves before he found his voice in parliament. “At first my knees were shaking and my palms were super sweaty, but now I’m able to get up there and I’m able to speak really well, I don’t need to have the speech in front of me, I think my confidence has really grown,” he said. On speaking in relation to the impor tance of advocating for rural and regional NSW, Braydon said he feels like the bush can be forgotten. “I feel like regional and rural NSW, especially youth, can be forgotten about quite a bit.” “I believe it is so important to have a role like this in this year’s Youth Parlia ment and I’m so glad I can be the first Regional Youth Minister sitting in Youth Parliament.”Thesenior high school student said he might consider a career in politics. “I used to think that politics was just holding office, but I realise to go into a career in politics is not just holding office and representing your state or electorate, it is way more than that,” he said. “You can work in an office, you can be a policymaker, you can work for an MP or a MLC, there are so many opportunities, I didn’t know that and that’s given me hope. I don’t have to hold office, I can do many other things.”

Member for Richmond Justine Elliot recently announced that applications are now open for grants between $1,000 and $5,000 to support eligible not-for-profit community or ganisations.“Volunteers play such a vital role, and these grants will sup port community groups right across our region,” Ms Elliot said. “Local organisations can use the funding to buy much-needed small equipment items, such as computers or first-aid kits.

Ms Elliot said the Tweed and broader Richmond areas have so many dedicated volunteer groups who give their time to help others in our community. “I encourage them to apply for these grants,” she said. “I’m always fighting to make sure we get our fair share from Canberra and these grants are part of the more than $2.5 billion I’ve delivered for our local roads, schools, health and community resources.”

Taylors Corner has best fuel price in Tweed MOTORISTS ARE rushing to fill up at the fuel bowser this week, taking advantage of some hottest fuel prices so far in 2022. As the deadline to the federal government’s halving of the fuel subsidy is set to expire at midnight on September 28, it makes you wonder if some people stockpile the stuff. The cheapest fuel price in the Tweed Shire, at the time of print, was at the iconic Taylors Corner Service Station at 89 Ewing Street in Murwillumbah.TaylorsCorner is managed by Byron Mitch ell, who has been operating the servo for the past year and said he was keen to attract more motorists and offer a “fair price”. Taylors Corner was offering unleaded (U91) for $1.69 per litre at the time of print and $1.89 per litre for diesel. That’s almost 10 cents cheaper than other fuel providers. “We wanted to show we’re not greedy, we want to support locals and we’re still making a small profit,” he said. Mr Mitchell said he’s had the price lower than his competition for the past month. “We’re keen to stay low, even though the fuel subsidy will have an impact, but will need to see how the pricing goes,” he said. Mr Mitchell also wanted to dispel some mistruths he’s heard about Taylors Corner. “We want to assure residents that our fuel tanks have been regularly checked by profes sionals and does not contain water,” he said. “Our tanks are clean, and our petrol is clean. “Our diesel tanks are also brand new and sit above the flood level and are professionally checked regularly. “So come down and fill up at Taylors Corner, we’re proudly independent.”

2. It may seem obvious, but you should refuel when prices are low, not when your tank is empty, which most of us are guilty of doing.

4. Watch your speed. Keep in the left lane if travelling below the speed limit.

7. Have your wheel alignment checked. An improper alignment will see your tyres drag across the bitumen rather than rolling freely which results in lower fuel economy.

9. Shop smart. Take advantage of the range of petrol offers with companies. 10. Service your car regularly. Blocked air filters can increase fuel consumption signifi cantly.

1. Shop around. This is especially the case in the Tweed Shire, where Queensland provides a great option to fill up for cheaper per litre rates. You can also use a range of websites to monitor real time pricing.

THE WEEKLY, in conjunction with NRMA, has compiled the top ten tips for keeping your fuel dial in the green this week.

3. Avoid hard acceleration and braking. Flow with the traffic and maintain smooth driving, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent.

5. Lighten the load. Take off roof-racks and bull bars if they’re not needed. Remove golf clubs or tools if you’re not using them.

“With wet soils, high rivers, full dams and the outlook for above average rainfall, there remains an elevated risk of flooding,” Commissioner York said. “Today’s announcement from the Bureau is yet another reason for people to be prepared for floods. “Know your own flood risk, develop your flood plan and make sensible and safe decisions.

Harvest delays and high sugar content

THE NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is warning Tweed Shire residents and farmers to be prepared for “heightened risks of severe weather” in the coming months. Bureau of Metrology (BOM) issued a La Nina alert late last week, as their three-month climate outlook shows a high chance of above average rainfall for most of the eastern twothirds of the Australian mainland between September and November 2022. NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York is warning residents to expect adverse weather conditions for months to come.

THE HARVEST in the Condong Mill area has now reached 25 per cent of the estimated crop. We are behind schedule for this time of year due mainly to the wet weather experienced. Our harvest season will now extend into December and our crop of 385,000 tonnes seems optimistic at this stage. Cane in the Richmond area continues to be hauled to Condong, but the amount is limited by Condong’s capac ity and a stretched transport system.Thedelayed start of Broad water Mill is of major concern to our industry. This large industrial site was severely damaged in the catastrophic floods of March and repairs to the mill and co generation plant are ongoing. Hopefully Broadwater Mill will fire up again by Septem berOn1.a more positive note, although the crop is a small one this year, down by about 30 per cent on average, the sugar content is quite high — by more than half a unit of CCS — for this time of year. The world sugar price, which is the benchmark upon which all Australian sugar is traded, continues to sustain goodTheselevels.good prices for sug ar help offset some of the dramatic rises in input costs for Australian farmers, such as fuel, fertiliser, chemicals, machinery and parts, if you can get them. All Australian farmers know the experience of one step for ward, one step sideways and one step backwards. Cane farmers are currently busy trying to prepare fallow ground for cane planting, which usually starts mid-Au gust. This has been very diffi cult because of the saturated soilSeveralconditions.weeks of fine weath er are desperately needed for planting and to continue the harvest.Harvest crews are doing a great job under difficult condi tions, and the huge amount of flood debris in the cane crop keeps them busy and slows theTheharvest.growers are having a hard time getting the silt laden cane to burn and this makes the harvesting job even more difficult. Bye for now and best wishes, Rob Hawken.

THE SPOTLIGHT was well and truly on men’s mental health on the weekend after the tragic passing of Paul Green. Green was an NRL icon but more im portantly was a Dad, a husband and a ripperGreenybloke.played first grade at several clubs, played origin and a test for Aus tralia during Superleague. Add to that a quality coaching that included the highlights of Origin and delivering the Cowboys first Grand Final victory in 2015 and he is a true icon of the game who sadly is no longer with us. I was lucky enough to play with Greeny at Wynnum in 2005 and he called me in France to return to the Gulls when he had the clipboard in 2010. He called me the day my son Felix was born and was always someone I could touch base with. He was a great player, great coach, a hell of a bloke and we shared some real good times together.

resume

I’ll miss you mate - rest easy. It really highlighted the concept of mens health and the pressure NRL staff face - none are at the coalface more than an NRL head coach. I do hope (albeit in unfortunate cir cumstances) this is the catalyst to have the NRL do more for men involved in the game before, during and after their careers.Saturday sees the start of the NRLW competition and I for one am very excited about it. It will be a quality competition and with the women’s competition expanding it is an exciting time for the ladies league. Northern Rivers Titans will be entering a team in the statewide Lisa Fiaola cup at the end of this year and will also partic ipate in the NRL Rookie Rise program for 40 females in the Northern Rivers to improve their skills. The last few rounds are going to be su per interesting with the Raiders still a faint hope of jagging 8th, the Sharks a good chance of finishing 2nd and 3rd to 8th up for grabs for anyone to have form the back end. The form of some teams is very interest ing - you would hate to follow the Eels and the Storm have shown again the Panthers areThebeatable.NRRRL heads into round two of the semi’s with the first spot in the grand final up for grabs. The Mustangs were strong at home against Ballina and will be looking for inspirational captain Joe Besgrove to lead from the front again in a bid to have a Murwillumbah Grand Final for the first time since 2012. Bilambil, who were heavy pre-season favourites after a recruitment spree will be keen to have the big dance down in the valley where the grass is green. Country fullback Ollie Regan will be looking for a big game and the matchup between the two rep back rowers in Rob Shepherd and Kalani Hensby will be worth the $10 entry fee. See you at the footy, Quinny.

OFFICIAL COMPETITION M / 114 / COMEDY / DRAMA When a billionaire entrepreneur impulsively decides to create an iconic movie, he demands the best. Renowned filmmaker Lola Cuevas (Penélope Cruz) is recruited. THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER M / 119 / ACTION / ADVENTURE / FANTASY Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder finds the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace.

We are so truly blessed to live in this region, with its boundless beauty and creative charisma. Today I decided to indulge in our local bounty with a walk through scrubby bush and littoral rainforest, culminating on a wonderfully white sandy beach. I could be describing any number of areas around the Northern Rivers and Tweed coast, as there are so many spectacular spots, each as special as the next, presenting different aspects of the same glistening blue ocean on these sunshine-kissed winter days. Even the whales were rejoicing, with parents teaching breaching, gracefully arcing so close to shore we could see their white bellies! Two calves took on the challenge, but hadn’t quite got the hang of it yet, as they shot out of the water like renegade torpedoes, spinning wildly in a corkscrew before crashing back down. The siblings – or cousins? – seemed to be taking great joy in the competition, with rapid splashes in quick succession as they began learning the art of the breach. Such a spectacular show that lasted the whole hour we were there, plus the walk back – we could still see them splashing away in the bay as we drove home. No wonder tourists flock to this little bubble of paradise, with a chance to witness such a scene! It’s a shame the ones who live here generally don’t get to enjoy it as much as those relishing a holiday. My friend remarked that they’d just done a 5-hour drive south last holidays to spend time somewhere similar and wondered why we don’t take advantage of what’s on our doorstep more often. Sometimes you have to leave to realise what you’ve got. I can hear Joni Mitchell now! With natural beauty comes creativity, an endless font for sensitive souls to draw from, and be drawn to. The Caldera has the highest number of artists per capita in all of Australia. That’s saying something for the magnetism of our Mountain! A melting-pot cauldron where we can all get along, with artistic offerings for everyone, no matter what you’re into. Sounds like Utopia! I have brought my little window and door repair business with me and if you need anything repaired, I’m your guy. I specialise in repairs to timber and aluminium windows and doors that are hard to slide, won’t stay up, have rotting in the timber, have loose mechanisms, need lock attention, have damaged putty, need prep for painting and have fly screen damage.

It’s a family business where my father taught me much of my knowledge, and the rest I’ve acquired through experience.

I’ve been in business for over 15 years and would love to continue expanding the business in this beautiful area that I now am grateful to call home. Please have a read of some of my “Jaketestimonials:isone of the nicest handymen I’ve ever had come you my house. He has a beautiful calm energy and his work is impeccable. He is a second generation window smith and I can’t recommend him highly enough.” Kate “We had Jake from Working Windows service the large sliding doors on our house. One of which we could barely open. He was very communicative and arrived when he stated he was going to. We were really happy at how he restored all the doors and screens to their original working state and in most cases better. His service is impeccable and always goes out of his way to help with getting the best result possible. We thoroughly recommend him to anyone who has any issues with the doors and windows. You don’t need to look further he’s the best guy.” Phil and Kim Byrne Give me a call or text today 0435 506 465 and check out my website: www.workingwindows.com.au 88347 call (02) 6672 4443 or email trades@theweekly.net.au (02) 6672 4443

WELLBEING

Holding Shot with Judy Tuckey MEN’S 2022 Pennant competition is well under way with five of the six section games, for all principles, on the agenda now completed. With the comp now formatted in sectional play of four sides per section, several of the Tweed Byron precinct teams have been drawn into neighbouring areas. However, this concept has not appeared to have impeded the local players in any way. Scoring across the board to date is quite interesting with mixed results in allGradegrades.2 results revealed that Byron Bay was drawn with Kyogle, Casino and Lennox Head in Section 2. The boys from the Bay, undefeated to date with five wins from five outings, are sitting on 47.5 points – 25 points ahead of their nearest rival, Lennox Head, in second place. Kingscliff Blue was drawn with East Lismore, Lismore Heights, South Lismore, Alstonville and Ballina in Section 3’s group of six teams. However, strong opposition has placed the Kingy lads near the bottom of the Sectionladder.4is made up of all Tweed Byron precinct sides. Early rounds revealed South Tweed, Pottsville and Kingscliff travelling closely on the leader board with Caba dragging the chain. However, after five rounds Potty is holding a 9 shot lead over South Tweed with Kingscliff a further 3 shots back and Caba in fourth place. Byron Bay and Ocean Shores wound up in Section 2 with Ballina and Lennox Head in Grade 3. Ocean Shores have been successful in winning the first five games and are on top of the leader board on 46.5 points with Byron Bay bringing up the rear. Section 4A with Condong, Brunswick Heads, Burringbar and Cabarita doing battle resulted in Brunswick appearing as the teams to beat after five games. However, a reinvented Cabarita in Game 5 has promoted their side to second place just two points behind the leader. Burringbar and Condong are now Sectiontrailing.4Bwith Cudgen Leagues, Kingscliff, South Tweed Heads and Pottsville vying for top honours, it appears that Cudgen Leagues is the tough nut to crack. Winning four of the first five games, the club is now leading on 31 points, ahead of South Tweed (28 pts), Kingscliff (25.5 pts) and Pottsville (15.5) pts. Last but not least – Grade 4 –Kingscliff White and Bangalow where thrown into the deep end with Alstonville and South Lismore in SectionKingscliff3. led the field for the first four games but South Lismore now has a 4.5 However, lead.one more round may change that! Stiff opposition kept Bangalow in check and further down theOceanladder.Shores appear to be on fire in Section 4 winning all games to date and holding an 8 points lead over second placed South Tweed Heads. Kingscliff Blue and Pottsville are trailing in this section.Section winners will progress to Zone finals to be conducted at South Lismore mid September. Stay safe and well and be kind to each other.

Murwillumbah coach Brendon Hill said their 30-14 win against Ballina was very “Probablyphysical.thetwo games we have played them have been the most physical games this year,” Hill told The“WeWeekly.gotoff to a really good start which helped in front of our home crowd and our completion rate was the best it’s been in four or five games. “Everyone pulled up alright and we should get another couple back for the Bilambil game. Cudgen had been at the top of the league for much of the season so the loss means they are out of the comp, a pretty devastating blow after such a great season. It was also a very emotional farewell for Myles Donnelly, who has retired due to an injury he has been battling. The Hornets website was filled with praise and love for “one of the greats” “an awesome player” and “a humble man” who will be “so missed” and has done so much for his club. His Dad Mike was there with a big hug at the end which is enough to bring anyone to tears really. Well done Myles on your brilliant career. Well done to everyone at the Hor nets and better luck for next year.

IT WAS the first weekend of the new finals series since the competition split into the Premierships Series for the top teams and the Trophy Series for the bottom teams, with Cudgen out along with much-loved former captain Myles Donnelly. Bilambil Jets captain Tom Rolles said their win against Cudgen “was a very physical game”. “The boys played well but Cudgen had a few boys back so it was good we kept them to 20-10,” he said. “This weekend we are playing against Murwillumbah to get into the grand final. “If we lose we play the winner of Byron and Evans; we are the only four teams left.”

The Tweed Coast Raiders lost to Northern United at Lismore 22-14 and will take on Marist Brothers in the Trophy Series this Sunday. If they lose they are out. Drew Lanston said they played well with only 13 players and lost Jayden Martin with a fractured leg so only had 12 players the whole game. “A big shout out to Jackson Schloss who played a full game of first grade and played well and then backed up for the reggies the next day,” he said. “The girls went so well; they had a great game and nearly beat Cudgen.” Ladies League Tag The sixth placed Raiderettes nearly upset old foes Cudgen, up 12-4 at half time but the Hornets girls showed why they are undefeated, coming back strong to take the win 14-12, with Tweed Coast out of the comp. We look forward to seeing the Raiderettes in action next year. Cudgen play Marist Brothers this weekend. Bilambil just lost to Marist Brothers 14-10 and play Northern United at Byron this week. There’s something about Bilambil, tucked away in the hills, that the locals would probably like to keep a secret. It’sa unique part of the world because it's so close to the Gold Coast, but it still has that country vibe, with rolling green hills, old farmhouses, cows grazing and some amazing views over Terranora Broadwater. The drive up the hill to get there (before the landslide) put some people off, but for those who are born and bred in the area, it keeps the hordes away and they reckon that’s a good thing. To get to the heart of a place you only need to go as far as the general store and The Bilambil Post Office Store gives a pretty good clue about what sort of place Bilambil is. It’s old school and quirky with a petrol bowser out the front and everything you could ever need inside.Sunday afternoon in "The Valley" is all about enjoying the footy at the lovely home ground of the Bilambil Jets. One local told The Weekly Bilambil is, “a beautiful blend of rural living yet close to beaches, city, airport, et cetera.” “There is a strong community spirit through local sports clubs, including an equestrian club, and we have horses, cows, wallabies asWhenneighbours.”welooked up real estate in Bilambil, only five properties came up, but that’s in the village and Bilambil Heights, which has many more homes, has 28 properties for sale. In 2016 there were 3,364 people living in Bilambil Heights and by 2021 there were 3,491, not a huge jump considering the amount of building going on everywhere else. In 2016 there were only 417 people living at Bilambil and by 2021 there were 441.The most expensive property for sale is a beautiful ten-acre (3.79 hectare) property with Bilambil Creek frontage. It has a four-bedroom main house and a separate three-bedroom home, five spring-fed dams, sheds and plenty of storage and is on the market for $2 to 2.2 million. At the other end of the market there are some lovely duplexes for around the $650,000 mark, but the cheapest at the moment is a three-bedroom 100 square metre villa on Scenic Drive for $595,000. It has a strata fee, but it’s cheap as chips at $27 a week.Lastmonth Bilambil Heights had 12 properties available for rent and 42 properties for sale. Median property prices over the last year range from $945,000 for houses to $495,050 for units. Houses in Bilambil Heights rent out for $720 per week with an annual rental yield of 4 per cent. In the last five years, Bilambil Heights has seen a compound growth rate of 38 per cent for houses and a whopping 85.1 per cent for Bilambilunits.itself has way less stock. Last month Bilambil had one property available for rent and five for sale, not enough to get any data on median sales and rent prices. Rachel Love has run a small business in Bilambil Heights for over two years. “The sense of community is great,” she said. “We’ve lived here for over five years and it really is a special place.”

Bilambil is little slice of paradise
