People power prevails

THE PEOPLE have spoken, and Tweed Shire Councillors and the Member for Lismore have listened, backing calls for a Tweed River study undertaken by the CSIRO.

It’s a major win for the Tweed District Drainage Unions, along with many local farmers, who have long called for a comprehensive study into the Tweed River — especially since the 2017 and 2022 floods.

The decision was reached following a public meeting which attracted more than 150 community members at the Condong Bowling Club on Wednesday, April 5.

Bellingdale Farm

THE LAND and Environment Court has denied an appeal from the owners of Bellingdale Farm to operate the iconic site at 47 Hindmarsh Road, Nunderi, as a wedding venue, with the court ruling for weddings to stop from this month.

The applicant, Spedding Estates Pty Ltd, owned by couple John and Donna Spedding, sought to overturn a Development Control Order (DCO) issued by Tweed Shire Council on August 19, 2022, to stop using the property as a function and wedding venue

The 51-hectare property is zoned RU2 Rural Landscape under the Tweed Local Environmental Plan 2014 which prohibits function centres and limits weddings to secondary use of a business.

The site does have historical approval for a restaurant, cafeteria and gallery (craft shop) since April 1988.

A development application (DA) lodged on October 31, 2022, sought approval for expansion of the existing restaurant and use of works undertaken without consent, which was refused by a majority of councillors in February.

“The proposed operation of a ‘restaurant’ with a patronage capacity of up to 153 guests in a rural zone, which has a history of operating as a wedding venue/ function centre which is prohibited in the zone and ongoing complaints in relation to noise is not considered to be in the public interest,” Council said in its refusal.

The matter was heard before Judge Sarah Pritchard SC, Mills Oakley Solicitors represented Spedding Estates Pty Ltd and Council was represented by Hall & Wilcox.

In his affidavit, Mr Spedding noted that if a stay of the DCO was not granted, his business would have to “communicate with 15 couples to cancel their wedding venue at significant cost”.

“Many of whom have booked up to 18 months in advance and have planned their entire wedding, including accommodation, the ceremony and choice of suppliers around the property,” the court heard.

Speaking with The Weekly, Mr Spedding said the impact was not only to his bottom line, but would also cost jobs and contracts to local suppliers.

Mr Spedding told the court that if a stay is not granted to allow for 15 weddings booked between March 3 and July 7, “it and its clients will suffer significant hardship.”

However, Council’s legal team argued that there is evidence, which the court accepted, that the applicant had been given notice since at least December 9, 2020, when a ‘Show Cause’ notice was issued of Council’s concerns in relation to the use of the property for weddings.

In passing down the court’s ruling, Judge Pritchard granted a partial stay to allow for six weddings to go ahead in March.

However, beyond the March weddings, the court ruled the applicant to “stop using the property and/or any building on

the property for the use of weddings and/ or functions”.

Mr Spedding said he’s continuing to work towards re-opening the site as a world-class restaurant later this year, under the existing approved development application.

“This will incorporate recent agribusiness planning changes that came into effect via the NSW government from December 1, 2022,” he said.

“This will potentially open up Bellingdale Farm to other new opportunities and options for the future, as it will for other argibusiness operators.”

Mr Spedding said his vision for Bellingdale Farm is to someday operate a worldclass paddock-to-plate restaurant and the opportunity for visitors to experience a working farm and various activities from horse riding right through to farm events, workshops and weddings.

“We will be hosting future weddings once we re-open the restaurant and incorporate the argibusiness changes,” he said.

Aged care crisis deepens

THE CRISIS in aged care in the Tweed Shire — with beds almost impossible to find — may be about to get worse with some residents from a Byron Bay facility closing for redevelopment potentially being moved to a Chinderah home.

Residents of Feros Care Byron Bay were left in shock after management called an urgent meeting to tell residents and their families the facility was closing soon for redevelopment.

They held a rally last month to protest the move, but Feros Care said the facility wouldn’t close until all residents had found alternate accommodation.

A Feros Care spokesperson told The Weekly “the closure and redevelopment of Feros Village Byron Bay with 36 residents was announced February 28, 2023”.

“Feros Care has placed resident wellbeing as a priority and so no closure date has been set,” the spokesperson said.

“We are supporting residents to find

their new home.

“At this stage, half the residents have already found their new home within the Byron Shire and some in other regions personal to their own circumstances.”

The spokesperson said Feros Care Wommin Bay will continue to provide residential care for the local community.

“We have encouraged our Feros Village Byron Bay residents to approach us with their preferences for their new home and some residents have preferenced Feros Care Wommin Bay,” Feros said.

“Feros Care Byron Bay won’t be closing until all residents are supported to find their next home.

“Currently there are enough beds in the region to meet this need.”

The spokesperson said Byron Bay residents could be offered a place back at the new facility once it opens.

“Our current residents in Byron Bay will be preferenced to move into the new development if it is appropriate for them and their individual care needs,”

the spokesperson said.

“Feros Care is a charity and our Byron Bay facility is situated on Crown Land and cannot be sold.”

The facility is named after the late George Feros, who was well-known in the Byron Bay community for walking the streets collecting funds for the aged care service and raising more than $180,000 over 20 years.

The registered charity outlined its plans to redevelop the site into a new “intergenerational community where seniors and younger adults live together in harmony.”

CONGRATULATIONS PAUL TAYLOR

Jet skis are an issue

The Weekly’s coverage of ‘boat wash’ on the Tweed River is more significant than just the Tweed River, as it also extends to the creeks and estuaries of our Northern coastline.

I have stopped fishing from my 4.5-metre boat and kayak in the Tweed River due to the waves caused mainly by jet skis — Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are out.

I have found that older-age jet boat users are more considerate of others using the river. Still, jet ski owners seem to have an untouchable attitude regarding speed activities close to other users.

I also note that jet skis with fishing gear are also seen to be more considerate of different users.

You certainly can tell that some regulations have changed when many interstate jet ski owners now use Pottsville’s Mooball Creek as their new playground, putting other users of the creek system at risk.

You can generally tell they don’t live in the area as they are not used to the tide changes and often get stuck out on the low tide.

I have experienced poor behaviour using a kayak in the creek system by jet ski antics in the water — it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured, in my opinion.

Speed boats are dangerous

I was reading about the issues with high-speed skis on the Tweed River in your March 30 edition of The Weekly.

I actually called the Maritime Services Board (MSB) some time ago regarding this problem.

I called MSB mainly because of the speed boats going near a pod of dolphins just up from The Tweed Hospital in the middle of the river. They wouldn’t have a chance if they were hit. If just one boat could do so much damage to our treasured sea life

Power Price Double Whammy!

Why Solar Owners are Fuming

Do you have solar panels yet find your bill is now twice as much as it was last year? The electricity market is broken and retailers have attacked solar users with a double whammy - Slash the amount they pay for your solar energy and increase all the other charges. More pain is on the way -The federal budget is forecasting a 56 per cent increase in electricity prices in the next 18 months.

Unless you have solar batteries you are facing serious increases in energy costs. 888 Solar Tek have installed hundreds of solar battery systems in the Northern Rivers in the last 8 years and can help you with great deals on the most reliable and long lasting solar batteries in Australia. Get a Hybrid inverter and 4.8 kWh battery installed for as low as $7,888.

that would be a tragedy.

I must admit I don’t see them in great quantities as Mr Shoobridge has mentioned in his area, but I know they are an intrusion into a lifestyle on the edge of the river.

Concrete jungle

How disingenuous of Ms Nowland (TVW, April 6) to sit at Hastings Point and advocate for a further extension of the concrete jungle which Kingscliff is fast becoming, in my view.

She is right, times do change, and had the state government changed in 2019 as it did a few weeks ago, the catastrophe in Kingscliff would never have been built.

What government in its right mind would build a major hospital inaccessible by road to 99 percent of its patient catchment in times of major flood?

Come to think of it, the uncluttered headland at Hastings Point would house any number of seven-story unit blocks, the same height as the hospital despite Kingscliff’s three-storey limit, to easily accommodate the new hospital staff.

Jeremy Cornford, Kingscliff

Misrepresenting or misunderstanding

Matt Eggleston (TVW letters, April 6) either misrepresents or misunderstands the totality of what came out of Uluru, in my view.

It included not only support for the ‘Voice’ but also a treaty, and a truth-telling process (read the reports if you want more detail).

The Voice is a beginning; it is thus a necessary, but not sufficient reform. As I understand it, one of the reasons Senator Lidia Thorpe has reservations about the ‘Voice’ is that she believes a treaty should have precedence.

When considering Warren Mundine’s views, one should recognise

he is now a member of the Liberal Party and has stood as a Liberal in a Federal election. He also has close ties to the conservative ‘think tank’, the Sydney Institute.

Questions on the Voice

Working at the Bugalwena General Practice, which I helped to establish, increased my awareness of Aboriginal health problems.

I would support the Voice to Parliament if convinced it would close the gap. Simply saying “everything else has failed” won’t do.

How would it help the depressed young man, ostracised and lonely because he won’t drink alcohol? Or the homeless alcoholic? Or the teenager with gross dental decay due to a diet of Coke? Or the five children of a young single mother (and four fathers) living in an overcrowded home with others and alcohol-fuelled domestic violence?

Would the Voice help others with such problems or only those who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI)?

Does favouring one race reduce racism or increase it?

Is that why many thinking ATSI people oppose the Voice?

Do they want to feel equal in status and opportunity or disempowered by a victimhood conferred by identity politics and entrenched forever in the constitution?

All cultures evolve over time, some practices becoming unfit for purpose when circumstances change.

Aboriginal mythology reinforced sharing all food found with the tribe, imperative for survival in a harsh unforgiving land, but problematic when applied to white man’s money and alcohol.

The cashless debit card helped, but Albanese scrapped it.

Twenty NT voices recently went to Canberra to advise him of the dread-

ful consequences.

Why didn’t he listen? Would the Voice only reinforce his selective hearing?

It’s time the Tweed Valley Weekly publication ceased its continual promotion locally of the likes of ill-informed and anti the Voice individuals, in my view.

As editor have you not realised this region’s demographic has changed considerably?

It’s no longer a blinkered Liberal/ National Party heartland.

You can argue all you like about free speech, but these types of letters are detrimental to an otherwise great local rag.

Stop helping to spread their vile and mean messaging.

Paul Taylor, Murwillumbah

Bring back the ward system

Thank you for the time taken to listen to Graham Kent and my concerns about the Cudgen memorial trees.

Previous councillors of about 2006 voted to have 60 per cent of the canopy of the weeping figs removed which resulted in the trees at Crescent Street deemed dead and removed.

I would like to ask why did Council remove the 60 per cent in one hit when best practice for pruning is 20 per cent per year?

Council replaced the trees with native trees and a year or two later removed those trees and replaced them with the dreaded Hawaiian pines, why?

A Council arborist recommended planting native spaces and the pines are not native.

We the people need a voice. I believe our voice was lost when councillors voted to scrap the ward system, again around 2006 with the rise and rise of political parties. Our voice has become neutered

by political party propaganda in my opinion.

We need our division ward system back in to represent the people in that area it represents. Do we need a referendum to fix this?

To my absolute disappointment and disgust I found a half-page advert on page 26 (March 23 edition), purporting to re-elect Janelle Saffin MP and Geoff Provest MP to Lismore and Tweed electorates respectively.

This ‘preposterous’ slant, with all its economic and flood/housing issues, was below the line of fair and honest political electioneering, in my opinion.

Mr Alex Rubin, Nationals Candidate for Lismore, was derailed by scaremongering, in my view.

Geoff Provest was re-elected based on honest, intelligent behaviour, supportive of his constituents, fair play when issues were raised and an affiliation with the Tweed community. Mr Rubin was bumped sideways; a man with integrity, excellent strategic skills, resourcefulness and a compassionate, decorated, rational mindset, rarely found in political circles.

Leon Darmody, Banora Point

Submarines over people

The proud announcement to spend $365 billion on nuclear-powered submarines earlier this year left me gasping for oxygen and sanity.

A debt of a trillion right now and possibly much more to come, when families and frail women are living in cars and parks unable to secure a roof over their heads, and our social fabric in decay while the planet is burning — what a marvellous achievement for a country of mere 27 million.

We as the most intelligent species on earth truly deserve to become extinct to make way for a less ingenious life form.

Hugo Wehner, Uki

People power prevails

THE PEOPLE have spoken, and Tweed Shire Councillors and the Member for Lismore have listened, backing calls for a Tweed River study undertaken by the CSIRO.

It’s a major win for the Tweed District Drainage Unions, along with many local farmers, who have long called for a comprehensive study into the Tweed River — especially since the 2017 and 2022 floods.

The decision was reached following a public meeting which attracted more than 150 community members at the Condong Bowling Club on Wednesday, April 5.

The event was chaired by retired barrister David Freeman and featured several speakers including local farmers Neil Baker and John Harbison, local tourism operator Michael Simmonds, local business owner Ian Brims, Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin, Business NSW Northern Rivers Regional Manager and Northern Rivers Resilience Initiative board member Jane Laverty, Mayor Chris Cherry and Council’s Acting Director of Engineering Danny Rose.

The meeting was also attended by all seven councillors and an apology was sent from Dr Daniel Spooner, who fell ill.

Following the public meeting, Councillors reacted to the meeting and carried a unanimous vote during their monthly meeting on Thursday, April 6, to write the state and federal governments calling for an urgent CSIRO study into the Tweed River.

The motion expresses councillors’ support for CSIRO modelling in the Tweed catchments and requesting the National Emergency Management Agency fund a comprehensive CSIRO hydrological and

hydrodynamic modelling of the Tweed Shire, similar to that currently being undertaken by CSIRO for the Richmond River catchment.

The study is likely to cost upwards of $2 million and could take up to two years before it commences.

Mr Baker said he was delighted with the decision to back the community’s view at the meeting that the CSIRO be engaged to undertake a comprehensive Tweed River study.

“I appreciate the councillors acknowledging the need to push ahead with the study,” he said.

“The future CSIRO study is complimentary to the Council study and will

build on this information with the best scientific research in Australia.

“We look forward to working with Council on this matter as a time frame of two years in now in waiting.

“This is a great win for grassroots democracy and good to see our politicians backing the views of our community members.”

Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin threw her support behind the push for a CSIRO study and said it was “obvious this is what the community wants”.

Court backs Council decision

PLANS TO create a 93-lot subdivision for seniors housing at Seabreeze Estate in Pottsville have been dashed for the second time after an appeal was refused by the Land and Environment Court on Friday, March 31.

The decision upholds Tweed Shire Council’s majority vote to deny the applicant, Newland Developers Pty Ltd, from pushing ahead with firstly a housing estate and now a seniors housing estate on the site.

Newland Developers had taken Council to the Land and Environment Court in 2017, having previously been refused to develop housing on the site which has been earmarked for a future school.

However, the court, under Commissioner Danielle Dickson, said the matter had undergone a range of changes and required an updated ruling.

Council’s legal team, Hall & Wilcox, argued that not only had the residential subdivision been previously refused, but the proposed development is inconsistent with Tweed Development Control Plan 2008 (DCP 2008), and the community wants a school on the site.

“The DCP identifies the subject site as a potential school site,” the court heard. “The concept development application does not provide for a potential school site and fails to justify why a school cannot or should not be provided on the site as required.”

During the public notification phase of the concept plans, which was open from January 19 to February 16, 2022, 62 public submissions were received, of which 34 expressed concerns with the development and 28 were in support. The number one concern from the pub-

lic submissions was the need for a school on the site, and that given the recent significant expenditure on a new primary school for Pottsville, “the need for a high school is self-evident”.

“That the actual planning approvals issued for Kings Forest and Kobiki (Cobaki) will provide 5,500 and 4,500 homes respectively,” the court heard. “The additional population from families moving into these estates will see enrolments at exceed the capacity of Kingscliff High School, leaving no room for Pottsville students.

“This situation is further exacerbated when the residential subdivisions/ developments at Dunloe Park and Mooball are considered.”

Other concerns were that further residential development would have detrimental impact on the local environment, fish habitats and koala habitat. And that the site is within a flood zone and is not suitable for housing development.

Another area of concern raised was that

Arrest made

the house and land packages at Seabreeze were sold under the assumption that amenities including a school would be provided.

Newland Developers, represented by Mills Oakley, sought to address many of the above concerns, but did not address the perceived need for a school.

“It is disingenuous for the site to now be developed for housing,” the court heard, via the public submissions.

“Many existing families in the area are required to send their children out of the area for school causing significant travel times.”

In passing down her ruling, Commissioner Dickson upheld Council’s majority refusal for the subdivision and seniors housing, and dismissed the appeal. On a secondary appeal matter, relating to water and sewer supply works at Seabreeze Boulevard, Commissioner Dickson granted the appeal subject to conditions.

TWEED POLICE have tracked down and charged a man following an investigation into an alleged break-in and sexual touching at Banora Point in February this year.

Police commenced an investigation following a report that an 18-year-old woman was inside a home just before 9.30am on Wednesday, February 1, when a man broke into the property.

She was allegedly sexually touched before the man left the scene.

“Following a public appeal for assistance, Tweed detectives, assisted by officers from Queensland Police, executed a search warrant on a property at Haig Street, Coolangatta, about 2.30pm last Thursday (April 6),” police said.

“A number of items were seized for further examination. “Later that same day, a 28-year-old man was arrested when he attended Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with aggravated enter dwelling with intent knowing people there, and sexually touch another person without consent.”

Police said the man was refused bail and fronted Tweed Heads Local Court on Thursday, April 7. He was subsequently granted conditional bail and is due back at court on Monday, April 24.

Stolen car found

A DUAL-cab ute stolen from Fingal Head on Sunday night, April 9, has been found in Queensland.

The white Mitsubishi Triton with the registration number ERV 39W also contained car seats for the owner’s grandchildren. A new Burleigh Wagon (stroller wagon) belonging to the owner’s daughter and used by her disabled children was also taken. A family member of the owner contacted The Weekly to say Tweed Police had called to say the utility had been found in Queensland, however the condition of the vehicle is unknown.

Lenny the koala who we introduced to you last week, was hit by a car and killed on the M1 at Tweed Heads South last Friday morning. Lenny was a 5-year-old female koala who called Banora Point home.

Council and Friends of the Koala again plead with drivers to be vigilant while travelling around the Tweed and not only in bushland areas.

Council’s conservation planning officer Marama Hopkins said: “It will absolutely ruin yours and your kids’ holiday if you hit a koala in your travels. It certainly ruined the long weekend for Friends of the Koala volunteers who have cared for and released Lenny over the years, to have to respond to this call and pick her up off the road. The death of Lenny, this well-known healthy female this Easter, is devastating.”

Friends of the Koala volunteers were shocked as they responded to another close call on Clothiers Creek Road this weekend. Drivers continued to speed around them as they checked on the safety of a koala, in an area that another female with joey was hit earlier this year.

Every death pushes the Tweed’s koalas closer to extinction. Council and the community continue to work hard to improve road safety through messaging, and to increase koala habitat to maintain healthy populations. For all koala rescues or incidents call Friends of the Koala’s 24-hour hotline on 02 6622 1233 or report sightings at tweed.nsw.gov.au/koalas

Are you a senior worried about falls?

Falls are a serious health concern for older adults, as they can lead to fractures, head injuries, and other complications that can result in hospitalization and a loss of independence.

Council’s Community Care Team is offering support for those who might be concerned about themselves or a loved one by way of an important fall prevention program this May. The program, Stand Together, will take place in Murwillumbah over 8 weeks.

Potential new school site still free from development

The NSW Land and Environment Court (LEC) has dismissed a deemed refusal appeal relating to a Concept Development Application to build on land earmarked for a potential new high school at Pottsville. In its ruling published on 31 March, the LEC dismissed a deemed refusal appeal in respect of the Concept DA submitted by Newland Developers Pty Ltd in 2022 to build a seniors housing development on 6.3 ha of vacant land at 1 Seabreeze Boulevard, Pottsville.

Under the proposal, Newland was proposing to develop 93 lots for seniors housing as part of a community title subdivision. A second matter heard by the LEC, to carry out water and sewer supply works on the property, was approved by the Court, subject to certain conditions.

This is the third time Council has successfully defended its position in the Court against Newland Developers, with the first two DA refusals (involving residential housing) upheld by the LEC in 2017 and 2020.

As part of the Facts and Contentions put forward by Council in defence of this appeal, it was argued that the proposed development was inconsistent with Section B15 of the Tweed Development Control Plan 2008 (DCP 2008) which identifies the subject site as a potential school site. However, in its ruling on the current Concept DA, the primary finding of the LEC was that the Concept DA failed to adequately address provisions for emergency response in situations such as flooding.

Like to be a Volunteer Driver?

Lucky to be alive

A YOUNG man was lucky to escape with his life after a horrific accident which saw his vehicle roll more than 200 metres down an embankment at Bilambil Heights on Thursday, April 6. Emergency services responded to an urgent Triple Zero (000) call at around 8.37pm.

Fire and Rescue Tweed Heads’ Senior Firefighter Adam Rees said the accident happened near a house on Scenic Drive.

“They heard the bang and saw the vehicle tumble down the hill,” he told The Weekly.

“They contacted Triple Zero (000) and were the first people to get down to the crash site.”

Firefighters rushed to the scene to find the vehicle had hit a guard rail and shot across the road and over the embankment, coming to rest on its roof more than 200 metres down the hill.

Fire and Rescue Tweed Heads worked quickly alongside NSW Ambulance to stabilise the driver and come up with an extrication plan to get the driver back up to the road to be transported to Gold Coast University Hospital as a matter of urgency.

Tweed Police officers, NSW Ambulance paramedics, Fire and Rescue Tweed Heads firefighters and Tweed District Rescue Squad VRA volunteer operators extricated the man from the crushed vehicle and loaded him into a stokes litter.

While the patient was being assessed by paramedics at the accident scene, Tweed District Rescue operators at the top of the scene set up a hauling system using a winch to bring the patient safely to the top of the embankment for further treatment and transport to hospital.

Firefighters said it took nearly one and a half hours to treat the man, get him out of the vehicle and up to a waiting ambulance.

The young man was in a stable condition when he was transported to Gold Coast University

Hospital.

Later, the young man’s family sent a message to all the rescue crews involved to thank them for their work and to update them on his condition.

“He is very sore but is in good hands being cared for as we speak,” a family member told rescuers.

“Unfortunately he suffered some compression fractures of the spine C7,T9,T11, (and had to have) surgery for some large lacerations and small wounds all over his body.

“However he is expected to make a full recovery and is extremely lucky considering the mechanisms of the crash.”

Senior Firefighter Rees said the young man was lucky to be alive.

“To walk away with only the injuries he had, he was an extremely lucky young man,” he said.

A YOUNG horticulturist’s car was stolen from Kielvale sometime between Wednesday, April 5, and Thursday, April 6.

Murwillumbah resident Josh Hopkinson said his 1992 blue and grey Daihatsu Feroza NSW registration CT 97 FT was parked outside SA Cross Autos on Reserve Creek Road when it was taken.

“It was booked in for a service on Thursday but I was really crook with the flu so a friend of mine dropped it in and then I was going in the next day to pick it up,” Josh said.

“I went to work the next day and came back and called the mechanic to see if it was done and he said the car never arrived.

“My mate took it down and dropped it outside the yard on Wednesday afternoon and it must have been stolen that night.”

Unfortunately the car wasn’t insured for theft.

“The insurance was worth more than the car but I’d just done third party insurance the week before,” Josh said.

“The police didn’t have much to say. I had to fill in a report online and I haven’t heard anything else.

“It had my Bluetooth speaker in it and my tool box, but all of that went through the flood anyway. The tools and toolbox went through the flood.

“I live with my family on the south side of Murwillumbah and all our stuff was downstairs in the garage so I lost all my tools in the floods last year.

“I am a horticulturist. I work at Mavis’s Kitch-

en with my mum who is the head gardener so fortunately I can still get to work.”

Josh said while the car wasn’t worth much it was great for his horticulture work.

“It’s my first car so it’s got a lot of sentimental value,” he said.

“They aren’t that common, but the main thing was that I had paid it off and it was mine.

“It’s a pretty cool work vehicle; I could do my job with it because it’s a four-wheel drive.

“I could hitch the trailer and drive it around the property. It’s just a good little workhorse.”

If you have seen Josh’s car please contact Tweed-Byron Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Information is treated in strict confidence by police. You can quote police report number R0000689259.

Car theft shocker Charges pending

POLICE ARE yet to lay charges over an accident in the main street of Pottsville on Sunday, April 2, which saw a parked car, which fortunately was empty, written off.

Tweed-Byron Detective Chief Inspector Dave Silversides said a gold Toyota Rav 4 was travelling west on Coronation Avenue at about 2.10pm when it lost control and collided with a sedan parked outside Dune Design and Homewares.

The white Hyundai sedan was rammed into a tree by the impact.

“A number of people witnessed the incident and called emergency services, and Tweed Police and NSW Ambulance were in attendance,” Insp Silversides said.

“The female driver of the Rav 4 submitted to a breath test and a sobriety assessment was undertaken which was failed by the driver. “Police made certain observations and as a result placed the driver under arrest for the purposes of blood and urine samples to be undertaken.”

Police then searched the driver and the vehicle

and located a plastic bag containing a white powder substance which they will allege was a prohibited drug.

“As a result, the driver was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital and a sample of the blood taken,” Insp Silversides told The Weekly.

“Further investigations are being undertaken and the blood sample will be analysed, as well the white powder seized by police, with further action to be considered when the results come in.”

The owner of the vehicle told The Weekly she was just thankful that no one was injured.

IF YOU’RE missing the Caldera Environment Centre (CEC) at Queen Street you can catch the friendly team the weekend markets on both Saturday and Sunday, April 15 and 16.

The CEC stall will be at the Makers and Finders Market in Murwillumbah on Saturday followed by Pottsville Beach Market on Sunday.

Long-time passionate CEC member Marion Riordan since the shop front closed last year, one of the only ones of its kind, many people have missed it.

“We have had numerous enquiries about when we will reopen a centre in Murwillumbah,” she said.

“We are still looking to do this in spite of steep rent rises in town.

“If anyone can suggest a new location for our fully profitable shop, please contact us.”

CEC has provided the local community en-

vironmental information and products for the past four decades.

“The CEC with its library was a great resource and a place where people could drop in and learn about the rich ecology and biodiversity of our region,” Ms Riordan said.

“This weekend we are holding back-to-back stalls in Murwillumbah and Pottsville to give people the chance to buy the great products we always have.”

Accident at Limpinwood

A MAN has been flown to hospital by helicopter after his motorbike collided with another vehicle at Limpinwood, between Chillingham and Tyalgum, on Monday, April 10.

Emergency services were called to the scene, on Zara Road near the intersection with Bald Mountain Road, mid-afternoon.

At around 3.10pm, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by New South Wales Ambulance to the motorcycle accident.

A man in his 30s sustained leg and chest injuries in a collision with a vehicle.

The patient was treated on scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team prior to being airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Traffic was backed up for some time until the road could be cleared and the patient extricated.

It was a busy morning back to work post Easter for emergency services with another accident taking place at Tweed Valley Way (TVW) on Tuesday, April 11, at around 10am. The Weekly will follow up on this accident in next week’s edition.

Point Danger lives up to name

POINT DANGER continues to be one of the busiest hot spots for marine rescues in the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast, according to the latest monthly Marine Rescue NSW statistics.

Marine Rescue recently completed 425 rescue missions in March, returning 920 boaters to shore prior to the Easter period.

Of those rescues, 20 were from Point Danger, which was somewhat down from 478 in February this year.

Disabled vessels accounted for 300 of the rescue missions with 37 per cent caused by engine failure and a lack of fuel.

Marine Rescue NSW acting Deputy Commissioner Darren Schott said many of these incidents were preventable.

“It’s vitally important that boaters keep their vessel properly serviced and always carry enough fuel for their journey,” he said.

There was a 16 per cent increase in the number of boaters logging on with Marine Rescue NSW.

“It’s wonderful to see that boaters are using Marine Rescue’s Log On and Log Off service with 7,677 Logging On last month compared to 6,635 in February,” Mr Schott said.

Boaters can Log On and Log Off via VHF Channel 16 or by using the free Marine Rescue NSW app.

The acting Deputy Commissioner said Marine Rescue NSW answered 23,873 radio calls in March.

“Radio calls were up by just over 2,300 in March compared to February.

“Volunteers at the Marine Rescue Sydney State Communications Centre managed the majority of those calls and do an excellent job in helping keep boaters safe,” Mr Schott said. The radio calls included seven Mayday calls where lives were in imminent danger and 12 Pan Pans, when boaters were in an urgent but not life-threatening situation.

Lake Macquarie was for the third consecutive month this year the busiest unit in the state with 65 rescue missions, while Botany Port Hacking conducted 31 and Port Stephens 30.

“With the boating season running until Anzac Day we are urging boaters to make sure they prepare for their voyage and monitor conditions to avoid getting into trouble on the water,” Mr Schott said.

“Our volunteers are ready to assist 24/7 and I commend them for their skill, bravery and dedication in saving lives on the water and helping to keep our waterways safer

Poppies on Parade

THE HUGELY popular and heartfelt tribute Poppies on Parade is set to adorn the Murwillumbah Bridge once again from Sunday, April 16, thanks to the hardworking folks at Rotary Club of Mt Warning AM.

Rotarians will decorate the bridge with thousands of hand-crocheted poppies in the week leading up to Anzac Day, Tuesday, April 25. This will be the fourth year the Rotary Club of Mt Warning AM has decorated the bridge with the crocheted poppies and it’s a tradition its members hold dear.

The red poppy has significant meaning in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK, as veterans and the public recognise it as the commemorative flower of remembrance.

“The flower reminds us of those who lost their lives or suffered in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations,” Rotarian Jeannie Anderson said.

“It’s a tradition that began in the early 1900s, after World War I.”

In fact, during World War I, red poppies were among the first plants to grow on the Western

Front in Europe. They bloomed across the wasted battlefields of northern France and Belgium. The flower gave Canadian medic Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae the inspiration for his famous poem In Flanders Fields. McCrae’s poem, written in 1915, recalls the red poppies on the graves of soldiers who died on the Western Front.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Burringbar is loving Rail Trail boost

BURRINGBAR HAS been through a rough time, with floods and landslides and then fire destroying part of the town last year, but the new rail trail is providing a welcome boost to local businesses.

Owner of Burringbar Meats, Brett O’Keefe, said that since the rail trail opened up the town is “busy as buggery.”

“A lot of homes got flooded in the area and people are still out of their homes,” he said.

“Then we lost three businesses with the fire, including one of our really good coffee shops which was terrible timing after the floods.

“Belle Smith (Knock Knock Who’s Hair salon) has moved to the little church on the flat two days a week but the Mexican (restaurant) and the Elwood Cafe have been torn down so I don’t know how long it will be to rebuild.

“Now there are just a lot of people

around, a lot of cars pulling up with bikes on the back of them, and the town is going great.

“We have plenty of people around and business is flourishing, it’s really good for the town; it has really made a difference.”

Ben Storey bought the Burringbar General Store three months before the 2022 floods.

“Then we had the fire down the road, which was a big blow for business because they brought a lot of people in, so it’s been a bit rocky,”

Ben told The Weekly.

“Now it’s turning around. We have a lot of people coming in and business is very good.

“It’s nice to see everyone and it opens up our communities to a wider range of people.

“Today, we’ve had people from Queanbeyan and about 15 from Cooma who are coming up to see what it’s like, and we’ve had people from overseas coming in just to do this.

“It’s really positive. We love it. We love seeing new faces and it brings Burringbar to a world audience. It’s the same with Mooball and all the other villages.”

Moo Moo Roadhouse owner Debbie Butturini said business was booming.

“We flooded in 2017 and lost everything, then we flooded again last year and we are still trying to build up from it,” she said “A lot of people are still out of their homes and it’s been tough. It’s very sad.”

Debbie just finished a big renovation in December “because it’s an old building and we wanted to bring more people into the area and just make it a nice place to visit.”

“Now we have plenty of room out the back to park their bikes and there

is plenty of room inside if it rains,” she said.

“We were busy before the rail trail; because a lot more people are using the road now, but we are getting more in now since it’s opened.

“The weekends are just crazy. They pop in and grab a cold drink and an ice block.

“It’s great. It’s great for the community. It boosts everyone up again.

“Everyone is out walking and I’ve been to Murwillumbah on it which is pretty flat and it’s a beautiful ride.

I really enjoyed it.”

Shane Vincent is a third generation owner of Crabbes Creek General Store and said no one was expecting the amount of rail trail traffic they are getting.

“It’s just been overwhelming with

how many people use it,” he said.

“It’s crazy with parking on the weekend. They are just everywhere.

“People are coming in and asking questions and maybe one out of six buy something, but I think it will pick up.

“We’re at one end of the trail so most people stop in the middle for lunch.

“My wife and I rode to Stokers on Friday and we stopped at Mooball, ate breakfast, bought a drink at Stokers and then stopped at Mooball on the way back.

“The trail is great. It was awesome.

“I think it’s awesome for Mooball and Burringbar because the trail is right there so you can get off and get amongst it and there is so much there. It’s unreal.”

Fee-Free TAFE courses

ANYONE EAGER to undertake a course in either a Diploma of Nursing or a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) can now do so free of charge via TAFE, after the Federal Government wiped the fees this year.

Minister for Skills and Training, Brendan O’Connor was joined by the Member for Richmond Justine Elliot at TAFE NSW Ballina last week, to meet with teachers and students who have already enrolled to study in a ‘Fee-Free TAFE course’.

Ms Elliot said the Albanese Government’s Fee-Free TAFE plan is helping to reduce cost of living pressures for students in the electorate, with thousands saved in course fees.

Students undertaking a Diploma of Nursing at TAFE Ballina are saving up to $4,420 and those undertaking a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) are saving up to $1,450 respectively.

“It is vital that we support people locally to obtain the skills they need to fill job vacancies,”

Ms Elliot said.

“Fee-Free TAFE is an opportunity for the people of NSW North Coast to train or re-train in an area that has demand now and in the future.

“The Albanese Government is investing in people in communities like ours, because we understand that access to education and training gives people control over their own future. It is critical to people’s employment prospects.”

Mr O’Connor said the Fee-Free TAFE model is a big part of the fix for skills shortages we’re seeing in NSW, particularly in the care sector.

“Across the nation, including in NSW, we are seeing shortages in the care sector, agriculture, construction, hospitality and tourism, technology, and sovereign capability in manufacturing,” he said.

“We need to deliver these skills at a time of acute skills shortages, particularly here in NSW. “We’re increasing access and reducing cost barriers for training for this state’s most in-demand jobs to ensure a pipeline of workers to these critical roles.”

Kennedy Drive team delivers Easter joy

A TEAM of good Samaritans have been hard at work to deliver a sweet surprise over the Easter long weekend to vulnerable members of our community.

Kennedy Drive Medical Centre Bulk Billing Clinic staff have been donating Easter eggs to Fred’s Place — a St Vincent de Paul homeless support shelter located in Tweed Heads — for seven years.

This Easter was their eighth year and they donated more than 100 Easter eggs to help spread some joy to those in our community doing it tough this Easter.

Kennedy Drive Medical Centre CEO Maureen Firehock and Dr Chis Ifediora said that providing chocolate Easter eggs “is a small gesture, but it’s one that eases the burden on the vulnerable and spreads hope during these tough times.”

Fred’s Place is a St Vincent de Paul homeless support service located in Tweed Heads.

It provides a basic needs drop-in service between 8.30am and 12.30pm Monday to Friday.

The facility has showers, laundry facilities, staffed kitchen, internet and telephone, lounge area, inside and outside areas to socialise, and mailing facilities.

Koala road deaths

TWO MORE koalas have died after being hit by vehicles, one on the Easter long weekend, putting more pressure on the endangered Tweed Coast koala population.

A five-year-old Banora Point koala known as Lenny who had a history of being rescued and released, lost her life after being released near Botanical Circuit.

Melina Ashby said she was very sad to hear that Lenny, who she found walking across her back fence in Banora in 2020 looking “very tired and a bit slow” had died.

“I was so sad to read this,” she told The Weekly.

“When we found her we followed her and she went up a big tree so we called the Koala Rescue Hotline.

“An older lady came to help and Council came with a few guys and she finally fell into the big

net that my partner Chayne was holding.

“She was so calm and lovely; she never growled at us once and when we rang a few days later they told us she was healthy and fine.” Melina and Chayne were asked to name the koala.

“My partner said her name will be Lenny; that’s my nickname my dad always called me when I was younger,” Melina said.

“When I read the news I shed a tear, I called my partner straight away to tell him and he was sad too.”

Another koala was hit in the Dulguigan area on Sunday night, April 9. It suffered serious injuries and had to be euthanised.

In 2020, there was an estimated 144 Tweed Coast koalas left with several deaths reported since then.

Report koala sightings to the 24-hour Friends of the Koala Rescue Hotline on (02) 6622 1233.

EASTer FUN from UKI

ON THE second last day before school holidays, the children of Uki Public School paraded their homemade Easter

hats on the ‘bunny’ walk.

Parents, siblings and friends sat around in chairs as Principal Rachel Watkins emceed the show.

Easter music played while each school

year came onto the bunny walk, and hopped across the raised long stage, showing off their hats. It was great fun!

Easter rescues keep lifeguards busy

LIFEGUARDS ARE warning people to take care swimming in estuaries as the tide starts running out after a young boy had to be rescued at Pottsville on Good Friday, April 7.

The rescue was one of a number performed by lifeguards and lifesaving volunteers over the Easter long weekend, with a lot of people needing assistance due to the swell and water movement.

Australian Lifeguard Service Tweed Relief Supervisor Cody Bell said that often when the creeks are at their loveliest it can be the most dangerous time.

“Obviously on the lower tide the water pulls quite hard through the creek there,” Cody said.

“A kid got pulled off the bank and sucked into the rip and taken out to the creek mouth.

“He wasn’t right out to sea but he couldn’t stand.

“A member of the public saw it happen and alerted the lifeguard which was on the north side of the creek about 400 metres up the beach.”

A woman reported anonymously on the Pottsville social media page that the boy had been fishing before the incident.

“A young boy fishing with his friend this morning was swept out of the Potty creek mouth to the ocean,” she wrote.

“His distressed friend came to us for help. My husband flagged down the lifeguards further down the beach, then he went in and got the boy.

“Very fortunate the boy was experienced in the surf and was relatively calm once my husband reached him.

“It was a very scary experience, and also for the kids witnessing this from the sand.”

Cody said that the lifeguard at North Pottsville paddled out with a rescue board to where the man and boy were.

“The rip sucked out the creek mouth and swung to the north and had taken him to the north but he wasn’t too far out,” Cody said.

“The child was okay. He was about 12 years old.”

Cody said creek mouths can be deceptively dangerous.

“On high tide it’s very pretty but that’s when it’s the most dangerous,” he said.

“It’s so blue and super nice and looks unreal but that’s when it turns, and as soon as it turns it’s so deep and all that water has to come out and that’s when the tide is strongest.

“Especially kids lose their footing easily because they are so much shorter so it’s quite dangerous and best to just swim between the flags to be on the safe side.”

Cody said that during the patrol season, which ends after the school holidays, they have someone patrolling the creek mouth most of the time.

“We have the flags on the north side of the creek and another set about 500 metres down on the south side.

“We usually have a lifeguard sitting at the creek on rotation when the tide hits high for the next four hours. We have at least one lifeguard on each rotation.”

There were also rescues at Fingal Head and the notorious Dreamtime Beach which Cody said is “so sketchy and dangerous” and has been the scene of several drownings

“We get the northerlies and it’s super protected but there are always rescues there,” he said.

“It’s one of the most prominent places for rescues on the Tweed Coast

for sure.”

Fingal Rovers president Ash Blake said on Saturday, April 8, they were called in to help out a 51-year-old man who sustained a suspected hamstring injury when he was surfing.

“Someone made a Triple Zero call but it took an hour for them to contact us to help,” he said.

“All we could do was give him oxygen and then help the ambulance get him from the beach to the Dreamtime Beach car park

“He was in a lot of pain but we don’t have pain relief and we can’t administer it.”

Ash said Fingal Rovers lifesavers were also involved in a rescue on Easter Sunday.

“A father and daughter were at Fingal Head Beach and got caught in a rip,” Ash said.

“One was brought in on a tube and the other on a board so it was all good.”

Cody said lifeguards are still on high alert “pretty well for most of the holidays because we have had a big influx of people trying to make

the most of the warm weather before winter, but we are prepared.”

“The safest spot to swim is between the red and yellow flag,” he said.

“If you are new to the area jump on the website Beachsafe.org which gives you real time information and general beach conditions like rips, stingers, and your closest patrolled beach.”

After the holidays lifeguards will only be on duty on the weekends at Kingscliff during winter.

Why is it important not to damage or disturb asbestos?

Asbestos materials become dangerous to health if they are damaged, disturbed or deteriorating.

When microscopic asbestos fibres are inhaled, they can cause diseases such as lung cancer, and other diseases which have no cure like mesothelioma and asbestosis.

All of these asbestos-related diseases contribute to approximately 4000 deaths in Australia each year.

The people at greatest risk of exposure are those that undertake repairs, maintenance, renovations and other work on older buildings and infrastructure which contain asbestos materials.

Asbestos containing materials that are sealed, undamaged and left undisturbed are unlikely to release asbestos fibres. Their condition should be monitored over time.

What is an asbestos assessment?

An asbestos assessment (i.e. asbestos survey, asbestos audit, or asbestos inspection) can provide information to prevent exposure to asbestos fibres and reduce unexpected future costs when undertaking repairs or renovations.

An asbestos assessment usually begins

with the assessor gathering background information, for example, information about the age of the property and details about its construction.

The assessor then conducts a physical audit or visual inspection of the property, including internal and external areas that are accessible.

Samples of suspect asbestos-containing materials may be taken for laboratory analysis.

How do I get an asbestos assessment?

Asbestos professionals who can assist with identifying asbestos include: licensed asbestos assessors and removalists

occupational hygienists who have experience with asbestos persons who have undertaken a recognised training course in asbestos identification.

the date of the assessment the address of the property the details of any identified or assumed asbestos-containing materials, including location, type of asbestos and its condition the results of any laboratory analysis of samples taken from the property.

An assessment report may also include photographs of identified or assumed asbestos-containing materials in the property, and advice on its management or removal.

In all other Australian states and territories, a person does not need to be licensed to carry out an asbestos inspection or assessment of a residential property to identify asbestos-containing materials (these requirements differ if the assessment is for ensuring a space is safe after asbestos removal).

You can find asbestos assessors by searching online for asbestos professionals in your area.

In the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), a person must be licensed to carry out an asbestos assessment of a residential property. At the completion of the assessment, the assessor will provide you with a report that should include:

Murwillumbah Mares Coach SCOTT

OUR MURWILLUMBAH Mares ladies team is coming together nicely this year after numerous changes to the 2022 line-up.

With experienced players Ruby Livesey, Kaitelyn Walton, Aliesha Kane, Samantha and Chelsea Vickery being joined by new recruits such as Asha Pearson, Kassidy Bryant, Makenzee Weaver, Elli Cooper and Kiana McCabe the team’s confidence is continuing to build. The addition of English import Cristy Notley, Young gun Charlie Stone and prolific

VICKERY

try scorer Cahlia May give the team an X factor. The injection of rugby league knowledge with the Legendary Johnny Palmer joining the coaching team and the return of our top line support staff of Katrina Mudge, Jackson Saunders and Andrew Lack should ensure the Ladies are prepared for the beginning of the season.

I want to encourage everyone to come along and support local footy and our Ladies League Tag team this year.

Reserve Grade Coach TROY MCLEAN

IT’S GREAT to have the footy back in 2023 and the Reserve Grade side is eager to hit the paddock for another strong NRRRL season ahead.

We got beaten in the Grand Final last season (2022), so we’re looking to go one better this season.

We have a strong side and the boys have worked really hard in the preseason.

They’re all loving their footy and with the hard work, we’re really looking forward to the season ahead.

I have a fairly young squad with a sprinkling of

experience, so it’s a really good balance that we have in the Reggies this season.

It’s great to be coaching a great group of young blokes again this year with plenty of energy and enthusiasm. We’re quietly confident in the side we have and without getting too far ahead of ourselves, we hope to put in some great results.

Once again we’re encouraging the community to come down and support their local footy and our sponsors this NRRRL ‘23 season.

2023 NRRRL Season Draw

Under 18s coach GLENN WEAVER

IT’S GREAT to be back on the field for the 2023 NRRRL season with the Under 18s Mustangs side.

I’m having another go at coaching the under 18s this year with a young side.

I’m really looking forward to coaching these young guys and hopefully getting some good wins this year and playing some great footy during this season.

It’ll be interesting to see how a few of the boys who played here last year as the younger guys now get a chance to be the senior 18s players this year.

I’ll be pushing some of our guys during the year to take the next step up and make their debut for the Mustangs A-Grade side.

A Trial Game was played last Saturday against Lismore Marist Brothers with two of our 18s guys

getting a run in the first-grade game, congratulations to Bo and Connor.

A-Grade Coach BRENDON HILL

THE MUSTANGS A-Grade side is looking strong and still very young for this year.

We have lost a few key players from last year in Joe Besgrove and Toby MacIntosh, we are focusing on rebuilding and bringing through young local talent. We still have some of our experienced players in Adam Walker (centre), Wade Ayres (front rower) and Rob Shephard (second rower).

We are trying to keep a focus on using local players where possible and keep building on our club culture.

I’d be disappointed if we weren’t contending the semi-finals this year.

Training has been going strong so far this year with great numbers throughout the entire club. Young players to watch this year are Matt Bollard and Cooper Wolf who both moved up from the

18s side last year.

As we’re a younger side, we hope to bring a quick and strong side to the field and use our skills in the best ways possible.

We welcome halfback Aaron Booth back to the club who has been playing his football in Brisbane and the Gold Coast over the last five or so years. He has been a great addition to the team both on and off the field with his experience and knowledge.

Finally, we are looking forward to getting back on the field after having a strong trial a couple of weeks ago, and hopefully being as competitive as we were last year.

Come down and enjoy your local footy this season and remember to support our great home club at Murwillumbah Leagues Club and our sponsors.

THE RAIDERS ended the Broncos winning streak and once again highlighted the mental side of the game.

Outside the most ardent green machine fan noone on form would have tipped the Raiders to beat Brisbane.

The Broncos win by 50 the week before and the Raiders go down by a similar margin, the bookies gave the Raiders 20 start and quite simply they never looked like losing.

I have written this article for the weekly for many years now and every year this issue of mental preparation and attention to detail appear.

This game was a perfect example. The Broncos had been flying high while the Raiders were spluttering.

A home game and several high profile raiders missing yet they had the Broncos on toast for the entire game.

Many clubs employ psychologists and motivational people as part of their staff but this was an example of Kevvie’s lads simply ‘not showing up’ which is hard to fathom given they are professional footballers paid to perform for 80 mins each week.

I couldn’t agree with the ‘careless’ call on Marty Taupau.

It didn’t cost the Broncos the game but I just feel like it’s entering dangerous territory with that decision that was an unfortunate accident.

I feel for Rapana and he did nothing wrong but it wasn’t a penalty in my eyes - rant over, well done Raiders, Broncos that’s two points that could be very handy at the back end.

The Storm continue to be a force with the ‘big 3’ philosophy and it continues to work.

Harry Grant is leading the Dally M’s, Munster is a genius and Hughes rolled back into town like he had never been gone.

The Fox’s absence from the Dogs will be a massive blow. You would have to suggest they haven’t started 2023 well considering all the hype and this injury will make it alot harder. Wayne keeps weaving his magic at the Phins and they are executing a simple game plan all the team are buying into and then give it to the Hammer.

Manly were flying high but have hit a massive speedbump the last few weeks and face a tough challenge to get back on the horse this week against Melbourne.

The Titans got a nice win and Hook is in strife, there are no two ways about it. I enjoyed the Knights victory and the highlight was Pompey’s footwork for his try - that was Benji esque!!!

Unfortunatley the Tigers still remain winless and it was no wrap and the Eels thats for sure.

Mitchell Moses earnt no new friends with his carry on which was disappointing considering he had a good game.

Cracking game this week on the GC with the Titans taking on the Broncos. The Future Titans u/16’s boys and 17’s girls will play a touring NZ side which should be great pre game entertainment.

The NRRRL commences this week in what should be another bumper season.

The Jets will start very short favourites to go back to back and kick off with a local derby against the Raiders.

Cudgen take on a rejuvenated Ballina at Ned Byrne and the Mustangs travel to Byron to start the season.

The Women’s rep season descends on Coffs Harbour this weekend with the Lisa Fiaola u/17’s and Open Women’s Northern Rivers Titans vying for the Country Championships. See you at the footy.

Mud map success

UKI ARTIST David Preston took his dog for a walk in Uki on Saturday, April 1, and noticed that everyone was walking around with a mud map in their hand.

The map had appeared that morning on a tear-off pad in all the shops and cafes. Beautiful, uncluttered and lyrical — it was an instant hit.

The Uki Village Business streetscape map was a year-long collaboration between David Preston, Wendy Redpath of the Community Technology Centre (CTC), and others.

David brought his great artistic talents to the illustrations and design, as well as writing the copy.

“Wendy approached me about the job, and as I’m too old to get on the end of a fire hose, I put together this mud map,” David Preston told The Weekly.

“Saturday morning when I took my dog Jesse for a walk, it was like mud map mania.

“The people of Uki and all the visitors were walking around with the map in their hand.

“I think we’ve kicked a goal with the map. Its graphic nature is appealing, there is a timeless quality.”

Wendy Redpath of the CTC got the ball rolling, and used her computer skills to put all of David’s drawings of individual buildings into a streetscape along the bottom of David’s beautiful Uki landscape.

“David did a drawing of each business in Uki,” Wendy told The Weekly.

“I put them all together on the computer onto a big double A3 size.

“If someone wants to feature their business, they can buy the middle spot on the back.”

Wendy laid out all the businesses and information on the back in a lovely, sparse style.

“That was so hard,” she said. “I had to get it consistent.”

Wendy saw a business streetscape as a way to get everyone together.

“The concept began with the completion of

the buildings for the Tinker’s Cuss and Illusive Wood Designs at the western end of the village,” she said.

“It was a time when COVID and the floods had disrupted businesses in Uki, and I thought a map would be a good way to promote the village.

“It was originally designed for the business page of the Uki Village website. David saw it and offered to do the work based on my sketches.”

As local business streetscapes go, it’s a masterpiece.

David chose to use a mapping pen with a nib, and black Indian ink for the artwork. His skill as a painter and printmaker made him the perfect person for the job.

“Pen and ink would be the style if you were doing illustrations for The Bulletin back in the day,” he said.

“It’s in harmony with what Uki evokes.

“After the flood, it seemed a really good way of putting all the people and the community on the same page, literally. It was fun doing it.

“The clock is relevant, because it doesn’t work, which makes Uki timeless.

“The community is on the same page, it’s a shared thing. The devastation of the flood commanded that things get attended to and get shared. We have to be together, and here we are, together.”

The creation of the map would not have been possible without the services available at the CTC, and the sponsorship of UKIRA, the Uki Residents Association.

Marlena Sue Basser of the Little Gallery was instrumental in getting the map published for distribution to businesses in the village.

The maps are available from a tear-off pad at most places in Uki. There is a promotional space on the back for businesses to highlight their specialties. For more information, please contact the Uki CTC 0266 795 399 or email ctc.uki. nsw@gmail.com.

Grants are back

BACK FOR its fifth year, the inGrained Foundation is pleased to announced a $200,000 funding pool for the 2023 Northern Rivers Large Grants Program.

Applications open on Tuesday, April 4, and the inGrained Foundation is looking to support Tweed Shire organisations who are doing incredible work among their communities. The program is open to not-for-profits with DGR status and grants will range between $5,000 and $30,000.

Eager to address a broad spectrum of challenges experienced within these communities, inGrained are seeking to support projects that fall into the following categories — conservation of natural resources and habitats, action on climate change, mental health and wellbeing,

accommodation and homelessness, and inclusion and diversity.

Stone & Wood communications and engagement manager Katie Benson said inGrained was founded as a separate not-for-profit by Stone & Wood Brewing Co (Fermentum Group) in 2018.

“The inGrained Foundation works to attract, generate and direct donations to grassroots charities,” she said.

“In 2022, the Foundation donated an unprecedented amount to the Northern Rivers community, with more than $350,000 provided via last year’s grants program and local flood relief efforts.”

Open soon to not-for-profits with DGR status, applicants are encouraged to read the guidelines and submit before Friday, April 28, by visiting: ingrainedfoundation.com.au

For more than 30 years, the sophisticated regional festival has been a highlight in the Australian classical music calendar.

“This year’s program will present a feast of amazing artists and musical flavours,” artistic director Peter Luff told The Weekly.

“There will performances from some of our youngest and brightest stars in a chamber music showcase, and an evening of Flamenco to spice up your Saturday night.

“It will be my pleasure to welcome you all to the 2023 Tyalgum Music Festival, a celebration of our shared love of music and the arts.”

This year the festival falls on the last weekend in September, that is September 29 and 30, and October 1.

Held in the Tyalgum Community Hall with its fabulous acoustics, the festival will present eight great concerts over three days.

The festival opens with a night at the opera. Scenes from early operas by Cavalli and Handel

right through to Carlisle Floyd take you on an opera journey from the 16th to the 20th Century.

Enjoy an evening of bubbles and blinis, Rossini, Weber, Handel, Cavalli, Floyd and Verdi.

Greg Massingham and the renowned opera department from the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University bring tales of love through the ages to Tyalgum.

On Saturday at 10am, some talented, award-winning students from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music will give a concert. The program is not yet finalised.

At 1.30pm, the German-based Vision String Quartet out here on a Musica Viva Australia tour will perform pieces by Ernest Bloch, Béla Bartók, and Antonin Dvorák.

The German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel wrote of the group, “They are amazingly vivacious, vivid and electrifying... the hot-blooded guys from the Vision String Quartet seem to be completely fearless”

At 5pm, there will be a performance of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, a tale of love, greed and temptation with a magic violin and the devil thrown in for good measure.

NORTHERN

Jupiter Rising at Tweed

THE NORTHERN Rivers Symphony Orchestra (NRSO) will brighten up your Sunday afternoon on April 30 with an inspiring selection of eighteenth-century music by Mozart and Michael Haydn.

The program features Mozart’s final symphonic masterpiece Jupiter Rising, and his great Concertante for Violin and Viola.

Two exciting young soloists will star in the Concertante — Daniel Kowalik on violin and Thomas Chawner on viola.

“The Sinfonia Concertante is considered one of Mozart’s finest works, and he himself believed it to be one of his most successful pieces,” Daniel told The Weekly.

“The work is a rare collaborative piece of music where two solo instruments —violin and viola — engage in a conversation with each other and the orchestra.

“Mozart’s music has a historical significance as he is considered a genius of classical music.

“Tom and I are excited to be performing this incredible work with the NRSO.”

Daniel started playing the violin at the age of six, taught by his father until he was 11.

He then went to the Sydney Conservatorium, and the University of Colorado on a full scholarship.

Daniel is the founding member and first violinist of the Orava Quartet, the first Australian ensemble to record on the Deutsche Grammophon label and tour extensively around Australia and internationally.

As an orchestral musician, Daniel is currently a member of Camerata, Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, where he regularly appears as a soloist.

Solo viola player Thomas also studied at the Sydney Conservatorium, and the University

of Colorado.

“I am really excited to play with the Northern Rivers Symphony for the first time,” Thomas told The Weekly.

“I’m really looking forward to playing as a soloist, and also playing as part of the orchestra.

“The Sinfonia Concertante by Mozart is one of my absolute favourite pieces of all time and I can’t wait to perform it again with old friend and colleague Daniel Kowalik.

“My favourite part is the slow movement, I wish it had a repeat in it so I could play it again!”

In 2011, Thomas was an Australian Chamber Orchestra Emerging Artist and has since performed regularly with the ACO.

Thomas has appeared as guest principal with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, as well as holding the principal viola position with Camerata, Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra since 2014.

Although usually appearing as part of the Orava Quartet, which he co-founded in 2007, Thomas has made several solo appearances at prominent music festivals around Australia including the Huntington Estate Music Festival, The Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the Bangalow Music Festival.

Thomas plays a viola made by contemporary American luthier Ryan Soltis.

The NRSO will be at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre at 2.30pm on Sunday, April 30. There will be an informative, entertaining pre-concert introduction and aria, presented by pianist Ayesha Gough and conductor Marco Bellasi at 1.45pm.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.nrso. com.au, at Murwillumbah Music, or at the door if not sold out. Enquiries 0478 012 324.

Music in the Meadow

IMAGINE A classical concert in a meadow by the creek on an idyllic property in Stokers Siding.

This is a totally new, exciting event, a trip back in time, a complete break from the digital world. Bring picnic rug, table, chairs and treats to enjoy in the shade of rainforest trees as you relax, serenaded by the Caldera Chamber Ensemble led by Barry Singh.

This small group of 15 string players and harp will perform a variety of familiar pieces which will both delight and subdue any angst that may have accrued over the last three years.

“To me, this concert is a healing of the soul after COVID,” Barry told The Weekly. “We’ve gone through enormous stuff with COVID, particularly the arts, and now we can bring music and performance back to an audience.”

Get into the spirit of the nineteenth century by dressing in flowing skirts, bonnets, and parasols for the women, or starched white shirts, ties and waistcoats from the era.

Pack a picnic basket full of delicious food and drink, perhaps some French Champagne, Dom Perignon or other beverages that would be suitable for the event. You could even share a glass with the conductor? Tea totallers do not have to fear as tea and cake were also a major part of the era. A section of the meadow closest to the stage will be cordoned off for older and infirm people. Getting to the concert will be easy as the

terrain is flat and there is plenty of off-road parking on the fields.

The idea of having a concert on a beautiful grassy field in a small village on a relaxing autumn afternoon was born at the end of the pandemic.

“So much of life’s enjoyment was curtailed during COVID and cultural events which are so enriching to the soul came to a standstill,” Barry told The Weekly.

Music in the Meadow will be at 288 Stokers Siding Rd, at 2pm on Sunday, May 7. Bookings can be made online at www.trybooking/com/CGLPZ

You can buy tickets at Andersons Treasure Store in Murwillumbah, or at Murwillumbah Music. Be sure to get in early before the event is sold out.

Adults $50, concession $40, students 18 years and over $20. Children 18 years and under are free.

The Coen Brothers have directed some of my all-time favourite films, full of quirky characters, dark humour, and philosophical undercurrents. The Big Lebowski, named Rolling Stone’s ‘Best Stoner Movie of All Time’, has perhaps their most notorious character of all, The Dude, even spawning a religion – Dudeism, founded in 2005, with over 130,000 ordained priests. You can become a Dudeist Priest via their website, and do not have to forsake any other religious alignments in the process, for the Dude’s preaching of non-preachiness is all-inclusive. Blending hippy ideals, Taoist and Buddhist beliefs, plus a dash of Stoicism, ‘Go with the flow’ is the mantra, being cool-headed and ‘taking it easy’ is the only practice requested, but not necessarily expected. The ultimate anti-hero of the 90s, his slacker attitude spoke volumes to the capitalist system. He has been compared to Jesus by at least one scholar, with the last line of the film, ‘The Dude abides’ being a Biblical

reference, speaking to the fact that there are Dudes in every generation, and always will be. The metaphor of the bowling alley, where most of the film is set, gives the audience a visual representation of the Dude’s philosophical standpoint. We are all just bowling pins, standing around until a bowling ball comes crashing through our life – no one knows who bowled that ball, or why, and no one can predict the way the pins will fall. Interestingly, we never actually see the Dude bowl a single ball in the film, although he is present in every scene, in true film noir fashion. With a nod to Raymond Chandler’s classic novel, The Big Sleep, the looping script references itself, Fargo, and other movies, and has a plot that doesn’t really go anywhere. Indeed, by Joel Coen’s own admission, it doesn’t need to make sense, since the entire point is that there is no real point in life. If that’s not a meaningful metaphor for life’s liaisons I don’t know what is.

Áine Tyrrell booked

THE REGENT kicks off its May live music program on Friday the 12th, with Áine Tyrrell, an inspiring songwriter and performer defying expectations of what it means to be Irish.

“After being restricted by genres and spaces, I am reclaiming my narrative,” she tells The Regent Spotlight.

“My music is post-genre, and in a post-pandemic, post-colonial world, there is a representation of Irish that we no longer identify with. “I am a different woman to a few years ago, and we all are navigating this new space together.”

Tyrrell moves effortlessly from singing in Irish and acoustic guitar to spoken word and hip hop.

The Woodford Folk Festival favourite refuses

to be boxed into the narrow definition of Irish folk and has built her international career by redefining the genre as ‘Irish as F***’.

She is excited to be back at a beloved venue.

“The Regent is warm, welcoming, and caring,” she said.

“It immerses the audience in the music, and I was recently reminded at Stringer and Crighton’s show how special a room it is.

“We have been through so much as a community in the last few years, and our ability to keep turning up for each other is what this region means to me.

“I hope a night of music and connection pours more into that well of being here for each other.”

Harvest Food Trail

NORTHERN RIVERS Food (NRF) are excited to announce the return of its annual Harvest Food Trail in May 2023 and the Tweed is a standout feature of this year’s venue menu.

From The Oyster Shed at Tweed Heads to Potager Restaurant at Carool, to Tweed River House in South Murwillumbah, Mavis’s Kitchen in Uki and Pipit at Pottsville, the Tweed is arguably one of Australia’s best dining locations.

But it’s not just the Tweed Shire that’s featured with the event offering an expanded range and 37 locations across the Northern Rivers. Held over the weekend of May 6 to 7, with a special taster event on Friday, May 5, the NRF Harvest Food Trail is going to have your taste buds dancing as we are all invited to celebrate some of the world’s best food.

Northern Rivers Food’s executive officer Chris Mills said residents can choose to visit all the breweries and distilleries across the region,

enjoy a weekend of fine dining with chef talks, or select a region and take a deep dive into its foodie scene.

“Our Harvest Food Trail offers a unique opportunity for you to meet with local farmers, producers, growers and chefs to celebrate and experience all the incredible food and beverage the Northern Rivers has to offer,” he said.

“It includes bespoke farm tours, behind the scene insights, free tastings, chef workshops, barbecue lunches and so much more.

“Gather your friends and fam to enjoy a leisurely drive and create your own food discovery journey, choosing your own itinerary over the weekend.”

To find out more about the 37 venues on offer across the region please visit Northern Rivers Food’s website and look out for the brochures which will appear across the region very soon.

Visit the NRF Harvest Food Trail website at northernriversfood.org for more detailed information and to download the brochure.

Tweed Landscaping & Gardens

BASED IN Murwillumbah, Tweed Landscaping & Gardens aims to deliver outstanding gardens across the Tweed Shire.

The business is run by three generations of the family, Malcolm Cameron, Hugh Cameron and Kaleb Cameron.

Malcolm has been landscaping and gardening for more than 50 years and has a wealth of knowledge across traditional garden design and planting.

Meanwhile, the younger members of the team are ready with their modern landscaping and design ideas.

Malcolm has worked as a head gardener in a large National Trust property in Melbourne as well as designed and installed gardens in England and India and country homes in Australia.

Operating from their base in Murwillumbah, which has a nursery supplying many plants for their garden installations, Tweed Landscaping & Gardens can deliver soft and hard landscapes of any size, large, small, courtyards, paths, walls, steps and vegetable beds.

Images of previous garden work installed by the business can be found on both Tweed Landscaping & Gardens Facebook page and website.

The team is available at any time to give free quotes and advice on your garden. Our motto is: “Planning, preparation, planting and patience will always provide pleasure”.

UKI IS renowned as a thriving creative hub full of talented artists and craftspeople with the quirky stores and homes they have created peppered around the area.

There are few more beautiful and unusual than the house at 67 Rowland Creek Road which is now on the market with Northern Rivers Property Group (NRPG). This home has all the peace, quiet and beauty of a rural haven within a short walk of the shops, cafes, pub and bars of the charming village of Uki.

Set on a sprawling 3,753-square metre block with stunning views over Wollumbin (Mount Warning) and a spring-fed dam, this home is an artistic masterpiece. It centres around a beautifullyrenovated 80-year-old timber railway carriage which has been converted into a stunning modern kitchen area.

The kitchen has polished timber flooring with some cool retro

features and flows out to front and rear verandahs.

Northern Rivers Property Group’s Adrianna Jenkins said it is a very artistic home “with a little studio set up looking onto the mountain.”

“The fireplace is made of tree branches and river rock,” Adrianna said.

“It’s everything you could want from rural and residential but you can still walk three minutes and get your coffee from Uki village.

“The original owners were all about the trains and there is train memorabilia like candle holders and old oil lamps converted into lights.

“The mountain is always there like an ever-changing postcard in all the different lights which you can see from the deck, the living room and the master bedroom.

“There are lots of birds and lots of colourful rainforest and fruit trees.

“There are vegetable gardens full of strawberries and other produce off the back deck and

fruit trees out the front.

“The previous owners have put so much work into it. It’s a special one.

“It’s uniquely Uki and has all the things that Uki is known for. It’s a really creative Uki feel. It feels very inspiring, like a muse property.”

There is a swimming pontoon over the spring-fed dam for hot summer day swims.

Upstairs is a timber sleeping loft and study area.

The slow combustion stove in the living room comes with a unique hand-carved mantelpiece made from tree roots, and surrounded by hand-laid stones.

There are beautiful hand-carved local timber features everywhere including internal beams, as well as a stunning main bathroom with a bath inlaid with local river stones.

The back deck provides a shady haven overlooking a terraced vegetable garden.

The front verandah provides shade from the afternoon

sun and a lovely view over the immaculately manicured, low-maintenance garden to Wollumbin.

The property has a separate air-conditioned studio/workshop, a double carport, a workshop under the home, air-conditioning,

a 1.5kw solar panel and town water.

This lovely home is on the market with Northern Rivers Property Group for $1.09 million.
