Before European settlement, the area was home to the Bundjalung people and covered in subtropical forest.

The European history of the Tweed Shire began in 1823 when John Oxley travelled 11 kilometres up the Tweed River, and five years later, Captain Rous explored 50

kilometres up the river.

Word got out about this lush paradise and European settlers

began to arrive in 1828.

They came in droves to cut down the massive red cedar trees and send them to England.

During the height of the cedar logging industry, the Tweed Valley was one of the wealthiest districts in Australia.
