MOOBALL WAS once a dead end part of town going nowhere and then some bright spark got the idea to take the ‘Moo’ out of Mooball and paint the town with cow colours — and it has never looked back.
Some old timers may disagree with this potted history, remembering early days when the village was a hub for a thriving local dairy and banana industry with a banana festival held out the back of the local pub.
The festival involved relays where the competitors ran three miles up and around the mountain and came back carrying a case of bananas.
There was also a big tug-of-war and a generally great time had by all in the close-knit community.
For all you newbies Mooball is actually pronounced Mow-ball, as in mowing the grass, in case you want to sound like a local, which apparently is Bundjalung for either big swamp or big lake, or the cane of a lawyer vine.
The fire which destroyed the Burringbar pub in 1931 played a big part in Mooball’s history.
The owner decided to rebuild at Mooball instead, and the Burringbar locals were not happy Jan. They took him to court and lost.
He named the pub which opened in 1932, Hotel Victory, just to rub salt into their wounds, but hopefully everyone has gotten over it, since it was literally 91 years ago.
The pub is a great spot for a hit of tennis, a swim in the pool, some lunch and a beverage, and there is usually entertainment on the weekends.
It is definitely the heart of the village with all sorts of wayward but very friendly locals calling it their second home.
Mooball has the great little Post Shop Cafe for tasty homemade treats and the Moo Moo Roadhouse is a popular spot for a meal with a great collection of cars, motorbikes and pushbikes, and best of all cheaper petrol than Hastings Point.
The village is home to a wonderful native plant nursery, Northern Rivers Natives, Pottsville Beach Smash Repairs, which gets five stars in Google reviews for their work, and a bike shop for all your Rail Trail needs.
When the town was painted Fresian dairy cow black and white, visitors started calling in to check out the village and the opening of the rail trail this year has sent tourism through the roof. You can start and finish the trail at the pub if you like; which is just a thought really.
Frankly there isn’t much real estate for sale in Mooball, in fact right now there is only one property available; residential land at Lot 11, 5913 Tweed Valley Way.
The property is 815 square metres and is on the market with Raine and Horne Pottsville/
Cabarita Beach for just $525,000.
It offers pretty fantastic commercial exposure, has a large 60 square metre storage or handyman’s shed, and is zoned RU5, for a list of potential uses including the possibility of building your own dream home.
In 2017 the state government approved the rezoning of around 50 hectares of land beside the existing village to allow for 250 new homes to be built in the existing village, which could potentially grow from 170 to 750 residents.
The Sunrise Mooball estate is being built by Catapult Property Group and is likely to catapult the village into a way more bustling place, which not everyone will be thrilled about.

now states that they will have 275 lots, ranging from 450 square metres to 4046 square metres, “with views to the ocean and the surrounding valley” and though it has been mooted for years, it has yet to be started.
The Rail Trail has given Mooball a much-needed lift after the pandemic and floods brought life in the shire to a standstill. It’s a picturesque village surrounded by lush green countryside with some of the friendliest locals you will ever meet.
Mooball is only a 15-minute drive to Pottsville Beach, so if you are looking for somewhere to hang your cowdy hat, you can’t go wrong in this cow-loving village.
