Cabarita glamping site sells to developer By Jo Kennett
DESPITE A group of locals
best efforts to get a bid together on a rare beachside block at Cabarita Beach, the site has been sold to a Queensland developer with settlement expected in the coming days. The 2.8 hectare site is currently home to The Hideaway, a glamping resort which opened in October last year after the property was purchased by a syndicate of investors in 2018. The Hideaway at 2-6 Tweed Coast Road, Cabarita, sold for around $5 million – although it was reported earlier in the year that two off-market offers of $6 million had been received prior to the site going on the market on May 2. Witheriff said he couldn’t comment for legal reasons on who had put in offers on the site, which is yet to settle. “The buyers are a Queenslandbased civil contract group who are looking to buy the site as an investment and continue running the Hideaway business for the short/medium term,” Mr Witheriff told The Weekly. “They have not lodged any plans to develop the site. “We closed the campaign with six offers and spent a month negotiating with these groups to get the best outcome for the sellers, buyers and local community. The sellers were always very conscious about the best longterm use for the community and really wanted to sell it to someone who would ideally

keep the business running.” Mr Witheriff said interest in the site came from potential buyers from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Byron Bay and New Zealand. The resort shut its doors because of the coronavirus in March, six months after first opening, and reopened on June 26 this year before the sale went through. Concerns that the site would be sold and developed as units saw Bogangar resident and former Tweed Shire Council engineer Brad Woodford put together a steering committee of locals that wanted to keep the site for glamping or as a caravan park.
