Kingscliff pods update

THE NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) is working on a permanent housing solution for residents of the temporary pod villages, where some residents have already left the Kingscliff pods and others have said the RA has indicated the lease will not be extended.

President of the Kingscliff Ratepayers and Progress Association (KRPA) Peter Newton said they were grateful to Tweed Mayor Chris Cherry for “responding immediately” to their concerns around a proposed lease extension for the temporary flood housing in Elrond Drive and for arranging the community meeting on Monday, February 19.

“Despite numerous attempts, this meeting was the first time we have been able to get any response from the Reconstruction Authority in relation to community concerns,” Mr Newton said.

“The issues raised by the local residents clearly showed what a negative impact the pods have had on their ability to live peacefully in their homes.

“In no one’s world should this be acceptable, but this impact falls squarely on the shoulders of the Reconstruction Authority who, despite all early promises, have ignored every attempt to get answers for the community or to improve the situation.

“We are hopeful that this meeting has provided a turning point in the relationship between the community and the Reconstruction Authority, whose representatives at the meeting acknowledged past errors and committed to ongoing discussions.”

Mr Newton said that the KRPA understands from the comments made at the meeting by the Reconstruction Authority and from a letter to a resident from Minister Scully, that the Reconstruction Authority will no longer be seeking an extension to the current lease, which is due to expire in June 2025.

“The current lease still has 15 months to run and KRPA is looking forward to meeting with the Reconstruction Authority in the near future to continue discussions and work on solutions that improve the situation for the near neighbours but also address the promises made that our vulnerable flood-affected folk would not be ‘dumped and forgotten’,” Mr Newton said.

“Getting flood-affected residents back into their homes or permanent accommodation must be a top priority but this was barely touched on at the meeting.”

In response to questions from The Weekly, a NSW Reconstruction Authority spokesperson said that to date, eight households have exited the Kingscliff village and a total of more than 130 have exited the 11 villages across the region.

“Ninety per cent of the residents living in the Kingscliff pod village resided in the Tweed Shire Council area prior to the 2022 floods,” the spokesperson said.

“There are 546 temporary housing pods across five local government areas currently housing around 1,000 people.

“Since the 11 villages opened, the RA has worked with community housing providers to support 130 households out of temporary accommodation, back into the private rental market, into social housing, or to return home.

“Placing people as close to their original homes as possible has been a high priority for the NSW Government.”

The spokesperson said the RA has also had discussions with council representatives to explore views about the future of the villages.

“Any future use of the pods will be guided by the needs of the community, and would be subject to landowner consent, planning approval, community consultation, and federal and state government agreement,” the RA spokesperson said.

“In the meantime, we’re working with the Department of Communities and Justice, Homes NSW, local community housing providers and other stakeholders to identify appropriate long-term housing options for residents of temporary villages, and to support their transition to more permanent arrangements.”

Nasty collision on Clothiers

Cloth-

Creek Road, Clothiers Creek, near Yandala Place, at about 6.30am on Tuesday, March 12.

Tweed District Rescue Squad (TDRS) was activated after reports of a head-on collision and one person trapped inside a small hatchback.

TDRS Captain Drew Carr said the accident resulted in a 20-year-old female being trapped by compression.

“The dash had squashed onto her lap,” he said.

“Whilst paramedics were stablising the female driver — the occupant of the hatchback — the rescue crews cleared the vehicle of the rear seats allow for the extrication.

“After that we used three hydraulic

rams to manipulate and lift the dash, freeing the woman from the car.”

NSW Ambulance tasked the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Clothiers Creek.

“A woman in her 20s was treated for bilateral leg injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident,” Westpac Rescue Helicopter told The Weekly.

“The woman was trapped for some time before she was released from the car and airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.”

The driver of the second vehicle — a large truck — was treated at the scene.

“There appeared to be no physical injuries to the truck driver,” Mr Carr said.

Growth strategy

Too many residents don’t realise how lucky we are to have access to planning information and allowed to have our say. Between 1980 and 2005, when Tweed Shire Council was sacked, it was a continuing fight to gain those rights.

Currently, too many are responding on a “don’t want change” basis, yet still expect their need for physical, mental, social, environmental and economic wellbeing to be met.

This demands ongoing reassessments as social, economic and physical events and new knowledge impact on those needs. This is the aim of our Tweed growth strategy.

For those who have come to the Tweed since that 1980-2005 period, there is also a need for awareness that present community positions on some issues are the result of having, for such a long period, to present a strong united front against Tweed councillors with Gold Coast-style development ambitions and a readiness to capitalise on any perceived weakness in opponents.

Such a situation existed in Kingscliff in relation to construction over three levels. To admit there was a place in Kingscliff for any construction over three levels was to weaken our stand. But it’s now time to support buildings designed to fit their usage and situation, as has occurred with the new Tweed Valley Hospital and could in West Kingscliff.

Gold Coast-style high-rise centred development however should never be considered.

Tweed River flood study

Someone has got to stand up and make an executive decision on the Tweed River regarding dredging, either state or council, and stop the poor excuses including buck-passing that requires assessment by the CSIRO/NEMA.

This argument has been going on for years after floods have decimated the

Tweed Valley. For instance, go and fill your bathtub to the limit then pour buckets of sand into the tub and see where the water runs, that’s the Tweed River, full of sediment.

In certain areas the river is so shallow, so if extra housing estates get pushed around flood-prone areas that’s the problem. Plus the river hasn’t been dredged for untold years, not since the Egg and I was closed and Flame Tree Park appeared.

If Tweed Shire Council wants more housing on the argument we need accommodation, go west.

Response to Coles and Woolies investigation

In response to your ‘letter of the week’ from Phil Ryan (TVW Letters, March 7) concerning my letter regarding Coles and Woolworths.

Firstly, my name is ‘Gwyn Hooper’ not Gywn Cooper. Small point but it is important.

Secondly, if Mr Ryan were to read my letter again, he would note that I never said that businesses should not make a profit. Quite the opposite.

My letter was as a follow up to the ABC 4 Corners program that investigated the alleged unethical behaviour of this duopoly.

These allegations were made on national television and as of yet neither of the two companies has threatened any form of legal action against the ABC for making these allegations. I wonder why. There is also currently an ACCC inquiry and Senate inquiry into these two companies.

All are because of concerns about the treatment of suppliers, price manipulation and land banking which were highlighted in the ABC 4 Corners program. The fact that Australia is in a so-called ‘cost of living crisis’ and that the two largest supermarkets are making record profits needs to be examined. Doesn’t pass the pub test I believe. It will be interesting to see the outcome from the ACCC and the Senate.

Just last week the National Farmers’ Federation weighed in on the issue saying that some primary producers have not received a price increase in the last 10-15 years from the two supermarket chains. That farmers are leaving the industry as they are unable to make a living with what they have been offered. In my mind something has to be done about this.

I agree with Mr Ryan about the banks and other companies that make huge profits. However, supermarkets are a non-discretionary spending item and as such record profits in these times has to be looked at. It’s hurting everyday Australians. Everyone that is as opposed to those fortunate enough to have an investment portfolio it seems. Greed is good?

Gwyn Hooper, Uki Council needs to step up on homelessness issue

A number of people have responded to what I have said in The Weekly’s recent coverage and Cr Rhiannon Brinsmead’s council motion, published recently around the “entrance to Tweed”. I believe it is their democratic right.

However, You Have a Friend (YHAF) has tried on many occasions to offer suggestions as to what Tweed Shire Council now sees as a problem regarding the homeless. Going back at least five to six years, the council has always blocked us.

I am most disappointed that you did not include my final point in the article quoting me regarding the “Entrance to Tweed”.

It is the last sentence that I believe is most important as to trying to explain my point. Had people read what I said regarding how YHAF has offered many suggestions to the council, I would hope they would see that we have tried on a number of occasions to solve the problems.

This is what I said in my conclusion, which I believe is the crux of my response: “In relation to the homeless community, over the years, I have

made numerous suggestions to the Tweed Shire Council with no commitment from council to address the issue.”

If the council complains about homelessness and other issues, then I believe the council should come up with a solution as to what they can do and offer Tweed, not just complaining about the problems. As I have said, YHAF has offered many solutions or suggestions, and the council has chosen to ignore and block them. What does the council think an audit of the area will produce. Nothing more than what they and the citizens of Tweed already know.

John Lee, You Have a Friend convenor, Tweed Heads

Pipedream solution to homelessness

Homelessness has many causes including (intergenerational) social disadvantage, domestic violence, poor decisions, personality disorder, mental illness, substance abuse, and now the high cost of energy, living and housing. Many homeless people need much more than shelter; merely gathering them in ghettos can invite more social problems.

While demand increased due to a net migrant intake of 518,000 in 202223, new dwelling commencements fell from 67,000 in September 2021 to just 37,000 in September 2023. Local, state, and federal government fees and taxes contribute twenty to forty percent of housing costs.

Rather than reduce these, the Greens want to increase taxes by scrapping negative gearing and the discounting of capital gains tax.

They also want to freeze rents so many landlords are forced to sell, fewer investors buy and even fewer build to rent, so supply dwindles even more.

The Greens want to spend 27.9 billion taxpayer dollars building 610,000 homes over the next decade (just $457,000 per pipedream home and land package), enough to house a fraction of the anticipated migrants!

Addressing the National Press Club last week, Max Chandler-Mather, the Greens spokesman on housing and homelessness, claimed that property developers are land-banking and deliberately drip-feeding supply to maintain prices and maximise profits. He has no idea of the administrative hurdles and delays that increase housing costs. If he ever becomes the Minister for Housing, expect homelessness to skyrocket.

peace

Whatever your faith or beliefs, we all should have at the forefront of our hopes world peace.

As we all know, the war in the Ukraine has been ongoing for two years and now the war in the Middle East has claimed and continues to claim the lives of so many innocent children.

In the most southern part of Gaza the UN is being blocked in its attempt to bring food. Many children and families there are starving and will die if food is not delivered soon.

So, what can we do you may ask?

The answer is we can pray for peace, and we can support the United Nations in their efforts to support those who are starving. We all will have different opinions on which side is in the right. As the Dalai Lama says: “We are all the same humans wanting a good life, happiness and peace.”

So please pray for world peace.

Kingscoast issues 36 contracts

SALE CONTRACTS for the first 36 lots are being issued for the highly sought-after Kingscoast development, with 36 lucky landowners receiving the tick of approval, pending settlement.

Kingscoast is located between Tweed Coast Road and Crescent Street at Cudgen. The developer sold a total of 110 lots between 2019 and 2020 for an undisclosed price that was described as “well below the current market price”.

The site is owned by Gales and managed by Intrapac Property, who is working through the Tweed Shire Council process towards settlement of all 110 lots.

Intrapac Property state manager of NSW and Queensland, Michael Khan, spoke to The Weekly and said the sales are progressing well and he expects settlement of all lots to be completed soon.

“We have a number of subdivision certificates with Tweed Shire Council for the first 36 residential lots, which were approved last week on Tuesday, March 5,” Mr Khan said.

“We’ve issued notices to each of the 36 purchasers and this will proceed towards settlement.

“Some notices will have either 14 days or 21 days for settlement depending on the contracts.

“The first of the four stages (3A) is approved; however, on the further three stages remaining, we cannot issue a notice of settlement until we have the subdivision certificates, we have approval for stage 3A which is the one mentioned above and the first 36 lots so far.

“Once we get the subdivision certificates registered with the final three subsequent stages that makes up the remaining 74

lots, and we will then notify the purchaser for settlement with the 14 or 21-days settlement contract.”

Mr Khan said they were confident the plans will be approved by council and progressed towards settlement for all contract holders.

He said some of the lot numbers may have changed and some purchasers could have received a ‘lot number change’ notification.

“This will not impact the sale or the address of the lot, it will only alter the lot number on the deposited plan,” he said.

Gales director Dr Stephen Segal provided The Weekly readers with an update on the Kingscoast development, where he stressed the “never-ending delays” to

the development due to COVID border closures, the floods in both 2017 and 2022, securing contractors and material cost increases.

“I had expected Kingscoast to be completed and sold years ago, but those delays, including the stress of the border closures and lack of contractors, they all caused such dramatic delays,” Dr Segal said.

“Although the value of the Kingscoast lots has probably doubled since the initial sale, the costs of house construction and materials has probably also doubled.

“With all of those delays and events, it was an extraordinary combination of events that could never have been foreseen — it was a perfect storm.”

Fire ant march continues

THE MARCH of the red imported fire ants towards NSW continues after a colony was found at Currumbin Waters on Wednesday, March 6.

The detection now invokes movement controls within a five kilometre radius of the site — which involves land on either side of the border — as well as eradication measures.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) established a Biosecurity Emergency Order zone in parts of Piggabeen and Cobaki Lakes following the ants’ discovery.

The NSW DPI were in Tweed Heads West, Cobaki and Piggabeen over the weekend talking to locals about what the orders mean.

Fire ants were detected at Currumbin Waters, about 1.2 kilometres from the NSW-Queensland border.

Following a report from the public, the nest was diagnosed as positive for fire ants and a team from the National Fire Ant Eradication Plan (NFAEP) destroyed the nest shortly after the detection.

NSW DPI were at Banksia Waters retirement village on Piggabeen Road in Tweed Heads West and Piggabeen Hall in Cobaki Lakes on Saturday, and again on Sunday, to speak to locals about the problem and how it will affect the area. Fire Ant Eradication teams were seen around Piggabeen Road.

A Banksia Waters resident said Service NSW had left messages on the phones of residents and were out in the village on Saturday morning with brochures and numbers to ring if residents saw them. They were told the ants had been found over the hill behind them in Currumbin

Parts of Piggabeen and Cobaki are within the Biosecurity Emergency Order zone for the latest fire ant outbreak. The inset image will give readers an idea of the

and some reported they had been found on the Queensland side of Piggabeen Road.

“The NSW Government is working closely with the national eradication team and Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries,” the NSW DPI said in a press release.

“The small, impacted section of NSW covers the surrounds of Piggabeen and Cobaki that are now, for precautionary measures classified as a fire ant infested area,” the DPI said.

“Movement of fire ant carrier materials — soil, mulch, turf and hay — out of this part of NSW is now regulated under the emergency order and may require a Record of Movement Declaration and a Plant Health Certificate.

“The NSW Government is working closely with the national team to prevent red imported fire ants from entering NSW,

and ultimately eradicating the pest from Australia.

“Around $600 million has been allocated to this fight, with the NSW Government topping it up by $95 million in 2023.

“The state’s response plan is working with swift and effective actions such as inspecting any reports of suspicious ants or eradicating found fire ant sites.”

Of the 572 reports of suspicious ants to the NSW Government’s hotline, all have been determined as not fire ants except for two – South Murwillumbah in November 2023 and Ballina in January this year.

Following those nests’ destruction, extensive ongoing surveillance revealed no further evidence of fire ants in NSW.

For more information about red imported fire ants or to report sightings, visit the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) website or call 1800 680 244.

Hands on experiences have always been an important part of our students learning at MEPS and this year has already been busy with opportunities!

Mrs Holly Cambridge is our full time Science teacher this year and has been busy introducing our newest MEPS guests to all our students.

The popular Hermit crabs, Ben and Jerry, have set up residence in the Science room and have showed the children all about their habitat,

diet, and behaviour. Students from kindergarten to year 6 have been able to hold Ben and Jerry very carefully as they take their daily trek across the classroom. We have also been learning how water irrigation systems help food and fibre crops and students have been collaborating in small groups designing and building irrigation systems that could water a school garden. The inventive designs have been put together by students working with materials such as cups,

straws, tape, and cardboard.

It must be a good day when the circus comes to MEPS! When the big red Spaghetti Circus truck rolls into our school grounds, K-2 students get ready to tumble, bounce and jump through hoops building valuable skills such as co-ordination, strength, and flexibility. We have 5 weeks of circus fun as part of the K-2 sports programme.

Local artist, Chloe Kane, from Creative Journey Within has been coming in this term to work with our Deadly Crew students in years 1, 2 and 3 exploring different art techniques. Chloe has given our students opportunities to work with various mediums for them to tell their stories with vibrant colour and symbolism in their artwork.

On the 22nd March, MEPS students are wheeling their way to school for National Ride 2 School Day which is always a day filled with fun and learning opportunities like how to look after their bikes, properly wear helmets and road safety. Don’t be alarmed if you see strange attire,

they’ll also be wearing crazy socks for Lots of Socks to acknowledge Down Syndrome Awareness Week. Heat up the glue guns, Easter is coming up quickly and children will be busy sourcing bits and bobs to make their hats and dioramas with.

On the 28th of March both hats and dioramas will be on display in an Easter eggstravaganza of fun!

Spotlight on proposed changes to rural zoned land

In a Draft Options Paper – currently on public exhibition - Council has identified that a key principle underpinning the Growth Management and Housing Strategy (GMHS) is the continued protection and availability of productive agricultural lands and preservation and restorative use of rural landscapes.

Future growth in the rural areas of the Tweed is not anticipated to be significant, by comparison to the urbanised coastal area, and in some cases, population and demand for dwellings in rural villages may possibly decline if measures to support resilient rural communities are not taken.

Fostering resilience within rural villages and communities is critically important for their vitality and maintaining proper management of the natural environment across the Tweed. Providing sufficient opportunity to accommodate both growth and diversification in rural land-based employment is therefore a fundamental strategic aim of the GMHS.

In terms of local matters:

• The reduction of lot sizes in rural areas has contributed to an escalation in land values, making it more difficult for farmers to purchase adjoining properties to develop scales of enterprise required for economically productive farming practice.

• Various parcels of land within Tweed rural villages have been deemed unsuitable for agricultural purposes due to factors such as poor soil quality, slope and geotechnical constraints, among others.

• Current zoning does not appropriately reflect the

classification of rural land and its relationship to its highest and best future use, to support a healthy and vibrant rural sector.

• Tidal inundation is expected to affect the viability of agricultural land adjacent to the Tweed River.

• Detached secondary dwellings (granny flats less than 60 m2) are not currently permitted in the RU1 and RU2. This housing type, which does not require land subdivision, may provide various localised housing benefits, particularly to inter-generational farming families and those residents seeking support to live in more isolated locations and manage properties in retirement.

The implications of allowing a strategic increase in housing in rural areas will be carefully considered to balance the need for expansion of rural villages to support their ongoing viability with the need to protect land for rural production and agriculture, and environmental management.

The background evidence gathered in preparation of the Draft Options Paper acknowledges the perceived demand for rural housing, that it is largely premised as an alternative to the urban lifestyle and more affordable however, it was also noted the evidence indicates that they do not broadly represent an affordable housing solution.

To understand the proposed options related to rural zoned land, view proposed change 57, 59 and 77 in the Draft Options Paper

How do we age well in the Tweed?

Council is developing an Ageing Well in the Tweed Strategy to make sure we create an age-friendly place that meets the needs of the community.

The aim is for the Tweed to be a place where people feel valued, supported, and connected as they age.

Big rig on site at Tyalgum

Restoration of Tyalgum Road has taken a significant step forward with the recent arrival of a massive piling rig on site.

The SoilMec SR-65 piling rig will drill down 15 m into the bedrock at the extreme slip site, creating 900 mm diameter holes for reinforced steel cages which will be filled with concrete. Each cage weighs 2 tonnes and will take about 9 m3 of concrete to fill.

The piling rig, which weighs 65 tonnes, will be used to install the first row of 64 piles on the downslope side.

With favourable weather conditions, it is estimated the operation of drilling, placing the cages and pouring concrete will result in 2 piles being completed a day.

With a boom height of 35 m, the piling rig is a welcome addition to the Tyalgum work site.

Work is underway on Tyalgum Road.

Emergency fire ant zone in Piggabeen and Cobaki

NSW DPI has been notified by the National Fire Ant Eradication Program (NFAEP) of a confirmed high-risk fire ant nest at Currumbin Waters, Qld, approximately 1.2 km from the NSW border.

NSW DPI is working closely with the NFAEP and Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and a new Biosecurity (fire ants) Emergency Order has been made.

An area of NSW including the surrounds of Piggabeen and Cobaki are now classified as an emergency zone, named the NSW fire ant infested area.

Movement of fire ant carrier materials out of this part of NSW is now regulated under the Emergency Order and requires treatment, a Record of Movement Declaration and a Biosecurity Certificate.

Check the DPI website to see how this may affect you at dpi.nsw.gov.au or call 1800 680 244.

TWO TWEED police officers, including the boss, are travelling to England next month to take on the Pommy police and the New York Police District boxing team for the Intercontinental Battle of the Badges to raise funds for a great cause.

Tweed-Byron Police District Superintendent Dave Roptell and Senior Constable Leanne Coombes are part of a NSW team of six officers heading to London first, then on to Manchester to compete on April 20.

Sen Const Coombes has been at Tweed-Byron Police District for the last five years. She has never done regular boxing before and has eight weeks to learn the ropes.

“My background is in Muay Thai kickboxing,” she said.

“I’ve had eight Muay Thai fights around ten years ago and then I had one a year and a half ago; I won five out of seven.

“I just got a call from the boss and he gave me the opportunity and I said yes.

“I’ve always wanted to have a boxing fight and have been training super hard for the last three weeks. I have five weeks to go.

“Having that kickboxing experience helps and I’ve been doing some training with a pad holder and boxing trainer Tony Keller who is very experienced.”

Supt Roptell and Sen Const Coombes are raising funds for NSW Police Legacy as part of the international boxing event.

Sen Const Coombes said she was already much fitter from training and running every day and is looking forward to the trip.

“I’ve never been to the UK so it’s a good opportunity and will be a great experience,” she said.

“I want to thank my bosses Chris Schilt (Manning Great Lakes Command) and Dave Roptell for the opportunity.

“We both feel privileged to take part and will do NSW proud.”

Supt Roptell said they would be taking on the

UK police and the NYPD.

“We’ve been training very hard for this and it’s pretty exciting,” Supt Roptell said.

“We’d like to thank our major sponsors the Witheriff Group, Tate Brownlee and EML — a local insurer that is a great supporter of the NSW Police Force

“I train at the Tweed Heads PCYC and I’m very passionate about engaging with our young people and being a role model for youth through the Fit for Life program run with the great support of our staff.

“Willie Middleton is our ACLO (Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer) and he has a big role to play in engaging our Aboriginal youth and works one on one with young people.

“He has the respect of myself and he has the respect of the community as he is passionate in his role.

“He is also a handy boxer and part of our Fit for Life program.”

Crime Manager Acting Inspector Russell Ewing said part of their crime management role is to be involved in youth and diversion programs.

“I’m part of a panel that looks at where we can do things differently and steer our youth away from the criminal justice system,” Det Insp Ewing said.

“I work closely with Mr Roptell and the youth team and I’d like to thank him.”

Supt Roptell thanked Acting Inspector Ewing and Detective Sergeants Chris Elliot and Gary Sheenah for their work relieving in the crime management role over the last 12 months.

“They’ve done a very good job in supporting me,” he said.

Fit for Life is open to adults and kids every Wednesday at 6.30am at Tweed Heads PCYC.

New pound a step closer

THE TWEED’S new Animal Pound and Rehoming Centre is progressing this month with Tweed Shire Council calling for tenders to design and construct the facility’s main building and carpark.

The proposed new development will be constructed on Council-owned land at 92–102 Lundberg Drive, South Murwillumbah.

Construction is expected to commence by mid-to-late 2024, with completion expected by late 2025, weather permitting.

During its meeting on February 15, Council resolved to commence stage one of the project by completing a design and construct tender package and approach the market.

Stage one includes detailed design and construction of the main animal rehoming building and carpark which is jointly funded by Tweed Shire Council and the NSW and Federal governments.

Council’s Director Sustainable Communities

and Environment Naomi Searle welcomed the news which would allow this much-needed facility to progress to the next stage.

“This marks a significant step forward in providing improved care and facilities for our community’s animals,” Ms Searle said.

Since closure of the pound, Council has worked in partnership with not-for-profit organisation Friends of the Pound and a temporary arrangement for lost and impounded animals has since been in place at a private boarding kennel.

However, the current lease held by Friends of the Pound at their Murwillumbah outlet is coming to an end on June 30.

“Unfortunately, the private lease arrangements have not been renewed, resulting in Friends of the pound having to relocate. It is understood Friends of the Pound will relocate to their site in Tweed Heads which we hope will prove to be a good outcome for them,” Ms Searle said.

Healthy ageing is a must for Tweed

THE TWEED and wider North Coast of NSW faces unique challenges and opportunities due to an ageing population, according to Healthy North Coast, who have highlighted the pressures of an ageing population on the health system.

Currently, 138,000, or 25 per cent of people between Port Macquarie and the Tweed Shire are aged 65 or over. This compares to 16 per cent Australia-wide.

Additionally, 30 per cent of the North Coast population is expected to be over 65 by 2030, and the number of people over 85 will almost double in the next 20 years.

CEO of Healthy North Coast, Monika Wheeler, said that as our population ages, the demand on the healthcare system grows, impacting people being able to easily access the services they need, and placing a strain on healthcare resources.

“People are living longer, but not necessarily healthier. We want to shift the focus to improving health now so that people might live the best life they can irrespective of their age,” Ms Wheeler said.

“Healthy ageing is a journey that begins at birth. As we live longer we need to ensure all our living years have choice, dignity and control.”

To address these ageing challenges, Healthy North Coast has developed a Healthy Ageing Strategy with the vision to help people on the North Coast live well, age well, and have ongoing opportunities to contribute and stay connected to their communities and country. Developed in consultation with the community, aged care industry stakeholders, and primary

and acute care clinicians, the strategy focuses on wellness, independence and enablement. A 54-year-old woman from Coffs Harbour who participated in the social research for the strategy said, “I guess it is a daily decision to keep well as much I can.

“For me, that’s a holistic approach, with every part of my life included — keeping mentally well, physically well, spiritually well and emotionally well.

“I think that ageing well has got very much to do with what we do day-to-day, it doesn’t happen by chance, it’s an investment into the future. It starts now, it starts every day.”

The Healthy Ageing Strategy contains a number of key initiatives, many of which are already underway on the North Coast.

These include digital health within residential aged care, the North Coast Care Finders Program, aged care disaster management planning and the Greater Choice at Home Palliative Care program.

For more information about the Healthy Ageing Strategy 2023-2027 and its initiatives, including downloadable resources, visit hnc.org.au/ healthy-ageing.

To achieve good physical balance, we rely on our brain, eyes, inner-ear, and musculoskeletal system to work in harmony. However, when the fragile vestibular organs of the inner ear and brain are damaged by illness or injury, anyone can lose their ability to balance.

Balance disorders are typically under diagnosed and undertreated. More than 1/3 of adults aged 40 years and older experience vestibular dysfunction at some point in their lives.

Common symptoms of vestibular disorders include vertigo and dizziness. Vertigo is a spinning or whirling sensation, or an illusion of the self or world moving. Dizziness is a lightheaded, floating or rocking sensation. Poor balance, nausea, visual disturbances, headache, hearing loss, tinnitus, and pain or fullness in the ears can accompany vestibular disorders.

There are many causes of dizziness or vertigo. But most types of vestibular disorders can be diagnosed by means of a thorough medical history and clinical examination.

The most common type of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

(BPPV), and once diagnosed is easily treated with repositioning manoeuvres.

Amongst other types of vertigo are Meniere’s Disease, Vestibular Neuritis and Cervicogenic Vertigo Cervicogenic Vertigo is due to a dysfunction in the neck and can be easily treated with Osteopathic intervention.

Dr Rudi Gerhardt has had substantial education in the field of Vestibular Disorders, can diagnose most of the common types, and is able to either treat the condition or refer on for further diagnosis and treatment.

Pottsville dunny call

A RETIRED Pottsville plumber is calling on Tweed Shire Council to consider putting in a toilet and outdoor shower beside the beach opposite the main bridge.

Peter Howell said he would like to see the amenities put in at the first exit (out to the creek mouth) on the beach side of the Pottsville bridge.

“There are hundreds of people at the beach and in the park beside the creek on a busy weekend and there is nowhere to go to the toilet and no shower,” he said.

“Yet between Cotton Beach and Salt there are 26 outlets from the beach and 21 showers and taps.

“Council maintains them and also spends a fortune maintaining that cycleway.

“We are residents here and we pay rates and we don’t even get a shower.”

Peter would like to see a toilet and outdoor shower in the corner next to the car park at the edge of Tweed Coast Road, beside where the surf club leave their equipment containers.

“The lifesavers have flags on the beach here and they store their equipment in a container here that they have to then tow away,” he said.

“They are on the beach patrolling all day and there is nowhere for them to go to the toilet.

“There is nothing here. A male and female toilet and an outside shower and a tap is all you need, and while they are at it, they could put a ten foot extension on for the lifesavers to stop them having to take all their equipment in and out every time.

“The water in the creek gets quite poor quality on the runout tide. We paddled

Murwillumbah Public School

up to Wooyung and there were great globules of fat on the water; whether that’s overflowed from the Mooball sewage outfall, or the Wooyung caravan park, or the music festival site, I don’t know, but we really need a shower so people can rinse off after a swim.”

Peter said it would be easy to get water to the site.

“You just have to bring it across the bridge, you only need a two inch polyethylene pipe, which would be easy to do,” he said.

“I’ve put water pipes out to the trawler wharf at Iluka and other places and it’s not a big job.

“This is not rocket science. There are blokes around that can bore under the road (to the creek mouth) or they could just put a trench across. You would need a pump out toilet and so you would need a sewage line going back across the bridge.”

There is a power line right beside the site which Peter says could be used for power to pump the toilet out.

“The only thing you haven’t got is water,” he said.

“There was no water in Pottsville and no water in Tweed Heads 50 or 60 years ago. We are not cavemen anymore.”

Peter said that he had heard Dune Care volunteers often come across human faeces in the area.

“They have spent a lot of money putting in steps down to the water along the creek and picnic tables to encourage people to come to the area but there is no toilet,” he said.

“On Australia Day there were hundreds of people here but where do they all go to the toilet?

“I think Pottsville misses out.”

Music to my Ears at Murwillumbah Public School

The provision of high quality music programs at Murwillumbah Public School will again be a feature of the school calendar in 2024. Every student at Murwillumbah Public School has access to a weekly hour lesson that combines the elements of singing, performing, listening and organising sound.

The school bands are already rehearsing for major events to be held this year and the choir groups also have a busy schedule.

Music teacher, Vicki Armour, has established the concert band which rehearse on Monday mornings and the Bunyip Band that get together each Tuesday morning. The school recorder ensemble also have many performance opportunities in 2024 and are rehearsing each Wednesday.

Many of our students are also involved in the Whopping Big Band which has a full schedule including performances

at the Tweed Valley Jazz Club. The Gifted and Talented program includes students who have been chosen to take part in the Marimba band.

Auditions were recently held through a statewide process to select students to be part of the choir to sing at the Sydney Opera House in August. An astounding 19 students from Murwillumbah Public School were selected in this group. Our school choir will be also involved in the Compass Music Festival to be held at the Woolgoolga Performing Arts Centre in June.

All of these groups and others will have their chance to shine at the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts towards the end of term 2. It will be an amazing year of music at Murwilliumbah Public School.

TESTIMONIALS

I’m really delighted with the skilful, gentle way Kathy has feathered my eyebrows. The results are excellent and very natural in appearance. I was unsure about the tattooing but after talking with Kathy about the look I wanted I couldn’t be happier with the results. A very hygienic, professional process with great aftercare. Highly recommend. Denice Kathy is just fabulous. I kept putting off getting my eyebrows done, but so glad someone recommended Kathy to me. Truly life changing to have eyebrows that look great all the time with no maintenance- Kathy is so gentle and clearly very experienced. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Sandra

Once again Tammie did an amazing job, so kind and gentle with the eye lash, eye brow tint and brilliant with the massage it was very relaxing.

life.

The key, according to Raymond, is to “stop worrying about things” and keep yourself fit and healthy by avoiding vices.

“I’ve never drank or smoked, but I do love dark chocolate,” he said with a smile.

Born in London in Regent’s Park in 1926, Raymond has experienced more than most from hardship and life struggles.

“Life wasn’t easy in the 1930s growing up, as we went through a depression,” he said.

Raymond remembers when he was young his family, like many, struggled, and they had to be resourceful.

He also had a near-death experience when he was 10 years old, which radically changed his view on life.

“I drowned in a swimming pool during a school excursion that was supposed to teach us how to swim,” he said.

“There was so many kids in the pool, no one noticed I was drowning at the bottom.

“I was out of it for about four to five minutes but was revived via CPR.

“This experience left me with an absence of the fear of death, it was a wonderful experience. It sounds strange, but I felt incredibly peaceful and unconcerned when facing death and the feeling remains with me to this day — I feel whatever happens will happen.”

During World War II his mother and sister were sent to the country and Raymond stayed behind to help his father.

Raymond was conscripted in 1944 and joined the army to become a paratrooper follow by a peacekeeper for the UN as a British soldier.

“I went on to train and become a paratrooper and undertook several varied missions,” he said.

“After the war I was sent to Palestine in 1946 where we were helping the Israelis get established and I was there to keep the peace.

“The Israelis were not happy with the arrangement as they wanted more land, which is some of what the issues are today,” he said.

“We lost quite a few troops during the settlement phase through acts of terrorism by Israelis during this time.”

Raymond and his wife decided to make the move to Australia as he wanted more sunshine and an outdoor lifestyle.

“I came to Australia in 1957, and after working as a policeman in New Zealand for a brief stint, I worked as a audiologist in Sydney,” he said. “We settled in Sydney, which is where my wife Betty and our two children Jennifer and Alison lived, and our third Kinta came later.”

Raymond has loved life in Australia, and although he’s been back to England several times, he couldn’t get back to Australia fast enough.

“Betty passed away from cancer in 1968 and I remarried a lovely partner Judith who remains with me today,” he said.

“We made the move to Tweed for a holiday and looked around the property market as we were house sitting for a friend who was travelling in late 1999.”

Both Raymond and Judith have been volunteering for decades.

“I love it here at the Food Hub,” he said. “Volunteering can be quite selfish in one respect as it’s very satisfying to yourself and you’re not under obligations except for the work that you’re doing.”

In closing, Raymond’s advice for a long life is to “work for as long as you can”.

“It doesn’t have to be hard labour, just keep yourself busy and keep the mind busy,” he said. “And don’t worry too much as worry will make you older.”

Seawall repair woes

RESIDENTS IN the Seascape Apartments at Tweed Heads have called on a footy legend for support in their battle to get repairs approved for a collapsed seawall which they say is a serious safety risk to the public.

The owners of Seascape Apartments, which adjoins Jack Evans Boat Harbour (JEBH), have been seeking approval for the repairs, at their own expense, for the last three years.

“Over time wave action has removed the sand and undermined the base of the rock wall,” Seascape Apartments Strata Committee chairman Bernie Sydenham said.

“This has caused movement of the facing rocks and large sinkholes along the wall and the steps into the harbour.

“We’ve been trying the repairs through various government departments for the last three years; Crown lands, transport, fisheries etc.

“In 2022 we got consent from all of them so we put a development application (DA) into council which was approved nine months later in June 2023.

“Since then, we have had a licence application with Crown Lands and we are waiting on a response.

“When we started this the repair price was $90,000 but now the estimate is $250,000.”

The Seascape owners paid $110,000 for the initial rock wall and stairs and have been paying for two and a half years for a safety fence.

“For safety reasons the steps leading into the JEBH have been closed for over three years, leaving no public access on the south side of JEBH which was the only access for physically impaired people,” Bernie said.

“Now kids climb over the fence to fish and homeless people climb over and camp in the area where there are sinkholes.

“We had to replace part of the fence which has been up so long and we had to buy a new

safety fence ourselves because the salt water damaged the hired fence.

“We have tried to get council, fisheries and Crown Lands to acknowledge that safety is an issue, but they say just make sure the safety fence is on our property.”

The owners have spent over $30,000 on engineering reports, environmental reports, design documents and application levies.

“Council has built revetment walls at The Anchorage and stairs on the harbour,” Bernie said.

“One of the sinkholes under the stairs was so dangerous that it could have collapsed under our caretaker when he was mowing.

“Seascape owners had to pay $25,000 to fill in that sinkhole.”

The group said they had heard there was a hold-up due to the land being on a historic Indigenous pathway.

“All our correspondence with Crown Lands, whether to the Minister for Crown Lands, the Deputy Secretary of Crown Lands, has had no response,” Bernie said.

“They just don’t seem to be able to make a decision, which is why we engaged with Larry Corowa for support because it’s a community facility for everyone to use and it’s unsafe.”

A local Bundjalung community leader and NRL legend, Larry Corowa grew up and lives in the area and said the community he represents “fully supports the wall being repaired.”

“My people have been deprived of this facility and this area that Seascape has always made available to the public as a pathway and to use for storytelling and recreational use,” Larry said.

“The owners of Seascape have received a lot of criticism from locals for the closure of the area which is beyond their control.

“I was only too happy to give my support because it’s gotten out of hand.

“We need the government to stop doing the bureaucratic thing and communicate with the committee to get it fixed as soon as possible.

“We need people with common sense that can sit down and discuss it and let everyone enjoy this beautiful area here.”

Mosquito warning

TWEED RESIDENTS are being urged to take extra care to prevent mosquito bites after recent detections of mosquito-borne viruses on the North Coast.

North Coast Public Health Unit Associate Director Robin Auld said the detections, combined with an expected seasonal increase in mosquito numbers, have increased the community’s risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases.

“Mosquitoes in the NSW North Coast can carry viruses which can lead to debilitating illness in humans, such as Ross River and Barmah Forest,” Mr Auld said.

“Mosquitoes thrive in wet, warm conditions like much of the North Coast is experiencing.

“The trapping program has detected Ross

“The best way to avoid these mosquito-borne diseases is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes.

“While we are not seeing large numbers of notifications for illnesses just yet, we expect this to rise over the coming weeks as the mosquito numbers increase over the annual peak season.”

Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses may cause unpleasant symptoms ranging from tiredness, rash, headache, and sore and swollen joints that can last several weeks.

More serious diseases can be found in NSW, particularly west of the ranges, such as Murray Valley encephalitis, Kunjin and Japanese encephalitis, so wherever you are, it’s wise to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

Tweed’s star chef

TWEED SHIRE resident and rising star chef

Abbey Kuhnell, 19, is on her way towards becoming one of Queensland’s most-awarded chefs after she won gold at the prestigious WorldSkills National Championships recently.

The gold medal, which makes Abbey the best cookery apprentice in the country, added to her Queensland Tourism Industry Council’s Salute to Excellence Cookery Award win in 2021 and her first place at the National Apprentice Competition Culinary Challenge in 2022.

“Winning these awards is somewhat overwhelming, but I’m grateful, particularly as I work so hard for them,” Abbey said.

The WorldSkills Australia National event saw Abbey compete against other apprentice chefs from across the country for four hours a day over three days, demonstrating her cookery skills to make various dishes.

The competition required her to use her kitchen operations knowledge and skills to prepare food and menu items, testing her ability with unexpected challenges.

“I was nervous, but I had prepared well in the months leading up to the competition. When I started cook ing, I knew I would be okay — even when there were mystery com ponents for each recipe.”

Her practice paid off, with her gold medal win allowing her the opportunity to earn a place in the National WorldSkills team and represent Australia in Lyon, France, this year.

“At the awards night, I thought I’d get a silver or a bronze, but when they said my name for the gold, I was like, ‘Oh, my God,’ I didn’t even know what to think, and

I started crying. When the medal went around my neck, I could feel how heavy it was, and it all sank in,” she said.

“I can’t wait for the next steps on the road to Lyon, representing Australia, doing what I love.”

The apprentice chef, formerly from The Star on the Gold Coast, developed her love for cooking at just ten years old when she helped her father, who is also a chef, in the family business, House of Gabriel in Tumbulgum.

“Helping Dad cater events, I watched how food brings people together. Watching customers enjoy what we cooked launched my fascination for creating cuisine and inspired me to become a chef,” Abbey said.

Determined to become a chef, Abbey joined The Star Culinary Institute apprenticeship program, getting on-the-job training and opportunities at The Star Gold Coast. Upon finishing her apprenticeship she re located to tropical north Queensland and has taken a chef position at the highly-regarded Bridgewater Q restaurant in Townsville.

“When I first started competing, it was overwhelming, but now I can compete,”

“I am confident I can use the different cooking techniques I gained from my TAFE Queensland training.”

Abbey’s dream is to travel, work in kitchens overseas, and learn more about different cuisines and cooking techniques before returning to Australia and inspiring the next generation of chefs.

“My training, competing and work experience have helped me grow as a chef and person,” she said.

“I’ve learned different skills and techniques that I wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to learn.”

“Why Do I Use this Photo in My Ads?”

And what you should know about it…

Dear friend,

“I know you.” That’s what people usually say when they meet me in town. Then they say, “You’re Eric. I’ve seen your ad with your photo.” Well, perhaps I should tell you a little more about that photo, and why I use it in my ads. Let’s start with me, the crazy guy, holding his grandson.

35 years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever.

“I’m a carpenter working for a master carpenter at the time. We are building million dollar homes, I’m learning from one of the best. I’m young and making good money, life’s good. But, then it happens,…I develop severe low back pain, my Doctor tells me I have a “herniated disc”. I’ve had low back pain off and on since the army but this is different. The pain is so intense I can’t stand up, and if I move it shoots sharp pain down my leg. There is no way I can work, I’m afraid I’ll lose my job if I don’t get better. My Doctor gives me drugs, that do not help. The surgeon says I’ll have to have surgery. I was only 23 and decided against it.

Finally, my boss convinces me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films and then “adjusts” my spine. The adjustment doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief and I can actually walk out with no help! Oh, by the way, that new doctor is a Chiropractor. Chiropractic works so well for me and for the other ‘miracle cases’ I see in his office, that I decide to quit my job and go to Chiropractic School myself.”

Now as for the photo, that is Silas, my grandson. I just wanted to show him off. You see, I have 5 daughters, 2 granddaughters and now him. He thinks the world of me, I think. Everyone gets adjusted, his whole family. In fact all of my adult kids get adjusted every chance they get. They love it. The challenges of raising a young family are stressful and getting adjusted helps us handle that stress.

They all know enough to ask me to adjust them when they feel like they may be getting sick, or mostly just to stay “tuned

up”. They know they are better with regular chiropractic care.

It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their low back pain. But, they also come to me with headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/ arm pain, sciatica, whiplash, back aches, asthma, re ux, numbness, athletic injuries, insomnia, just to name a few.

I would tell you what some of my patients had to say but my registration board won’t allow that.

You should know that I don’t heal anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tre-mendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Many people do not have health insurance, and those who do have found their benefits only cover a portion of the care they need. That’s where chiropractic comes in. Many people find that they actually save money on their health care expenses by seeing a chiropractor. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor.

Another way to save … peer-reviewed scientific studies show that chiropractic may increase certain immune system indicators, naturally and without drugs. Your immune system fights colds, the flu and other sickness. Although all people

respond differently to chiropractic care, you may not be running off to the doctor as much. This is especially important if you are self-employed.

You Benefit from an Amazing Offer – Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. My entire new patient exam, consultation and adjustment is $80 … the whole ball of wax. NO HIDDEN FEES. Please call right away, as appointments fill up fast and I don’t want you to miss out. By the way, further care is very affordable, too. You’ll be happy to know that I have a ordable family plans. You see, I’m not trying to seduce you to come see me with this low start up fee, then to only make it up with high fees a er that. Further Care is very important to consider when making your choice of a chiropractor. High costs can add up very quickly.

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have this lower exam fee offer. You’ll get great care at a great fee. Club Spec back in ‘24

THE REX is back in 2024, as the most iconic rally sports car refuses to call it quits. The limited-edition Club Spec WRX expected from April this year, according to motoring media, with a range of sporty upgrades.

Whichcar.com.au reported the release of the car’s image by Subaru Australia, the 2024 WRX Club Spec SE sedan that “will reintroduce a badge last used in 2020 with the then outgoing fourth generation ‘Rex’”.

Whichcar.com.au reported the Club Spec will again be limited to 150 units, “though the image is otherwise the only clue to what to expect until more details are released”. The dark alloys with an intricate double-Yspoke design are also new to the WRX range, while there’s no missing the STI-style rear wing for the latest iteration of the famous perfor-

mance sedan.

The WRX features red Brembo brake calipers as seen in previous Club Specs.

Cabin upgrades can also be expected considering the last Club Spec ramped up the sportiness with Recaro sports seats, STI steering wheel in ultrasuede, and a carbon fibre-look instrument panel.

The car is expected to make 202kW/350Nm from the 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine.

The 2020 WRX Club Spec was priced from $47,990, which was $7500 above the entry point to the WRX range.

The current WRX, launched in 2022, starts from $45,990 in sedan form, or $50,990 in wagon form, though the Club Spec is anticipated for the former only.

Car sale top tips

ANYONE WANTING to make some extra cash in the second-hand car market this year will find it much easier with The Weekly’s top five tips for car sales success.

Before you do anything, ensure your vehicle has a thorough clean and detail.

First impressions are everything in sales so prepare the car to shine and the prospective buyer will not be put off by smelly or untidy vehicles.

A well-maintained appearance creates a positive first impression, making potential buyers more likely to consider your vehicle.

Pay attention to details like vacuuming the interior, polishing surfaces, and ensuring the exterior is free from dirt and scratches.

Compile all relevant paperwork, including proof of registration, maintenance records, and any other documentation that highlights the vehicle’s history and condition. Transparency about past repairs and regular maintenance can build trust with potential buyers and demonstrate the car’s reliability.

Research the current market value of similar makes and models in your area. Price your

second-hand car competitively based on factors such as mileage, age, condition, and any additional features.

A fair and realistic asking price increases the likelihood of attracting serious buyers.

Be open to negotiation but have a clear understanding of your bottom line. Be prepared to discuss the car’s value, considering factors like its condition, market demand, and any unique features.

Stay firm on your asking price while remaining flexible on minor details to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.

Once you’ve reached an agreement with a buyer, ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed accurately.

Transfer the registration, provide a proof of sale, and make sure to follow the legal requirements for selling a vehicle in your area.

This helps protect both you and the buyer and ensures a smooth transition of ownership.

Remember if you’re eager to sell your second-hand car you can contact The Weekly’s Classifieds on (02) 6672 4443.

OUTER SUBURBAN drivers are zooming past inner city-dwellers on electric vehicle uptake, according to new analysis by the Electric Vehicle Council.

The new data, compiled exclusively by the EVC, shows the shift, with inner metropolitan EV orders (38.95 per cent) being outstripped by those placed in outer metropolitan suburbs (43.29 per cent). The divide is even greater when combining EV uptake in outer metro, regional and rural areas (61.05 per cent).

Electric Vehicle Council chief executive Behyad Jafari said the data was revealing.

“I think some tired stereotypes about EVs in Australia will need to be updated,” Mr Jafari said.

“What this data tells us is that the average EV buyer lives in the suburbs and might well be keen to use the new car to take the kids camping on the weekend. They might even be thinking about towing a boat.

“Suburban EV buyers who are sensitive to the cost of living will be looking forward to no longer worrying about foreign oil spikes or costly regular repairs and services.

“This demographic shift represents a new reality that opponents of EVs will rapidly have to come to terms with. EVs are not novel - they are now a suburban, mainstream Australian reality and that trend is only set to continue.

“We’re seeing massive EV uptake in middle-income outer suburbs, including strong uptake across western Sydney. People residing even further away from the capital cities are also embracing electric cars - nearly 18 per cent of EV orders are being placed in regional and rural areas.

quality tyres essential for maintaining traction and control whilst driving.

Tyres that are worn out or not properly maintained can lead to decreased fuel efficiency, poor handling and an increased risk of accidents.

Good car tyres also play a vital role in ensuring a comfortable and smooth ride. They help absorb shocks and vibrations, reducing the impact of bumps and potholes on the car and the passengers inside. Investing in high-quality tyres can also lead to significant cost savings over time.

Good tyres tend to last longer and have better tread wear, which means they need to be replaced less frequently. Additionally, they can improve fuel efficiency by reducing rolling resistance and increasing mileage. Overall, good car tyres are essential for safe, efficient, and comfortable driving.

Regular maintenance and replacement of tyres when necessary are essential for ensuring optimal per-

There are several ways to check if your tyres need replacing:

1. Check the tread depth: One way to check if your tyres need replacing is to check the tread depth. Insert a coin into the tread grooves of your tire with the Queen’s head facing down. If you can see the top of the Queen’s head, then your tire tread is too worn and it’s time to replace the tire.

2. Check for cracks or bulges: Inspect your tyres for any cracks, bulges, or other signs of damage. If you notice any of these issues, it’s important to have your tyres replaced as soon as possible, as they can be dangerous and lead to a blowout.

3. Check the age of the tyres: You can check the age of your tyres by looking for the DOT code on the sidewall of the tire. The last four digits of the DOT code indicate the week and year the tire was manufactured.

4. Check for vibration: If you notice a vibration in the steering wheel or the car while driving, it may be a sign that your tyres need replacing.

for round one.

have made for compelling viewing.

ROUND ONE is finally complete after a ‘split round’ concept to include the Vegas adventure before returning to Australia.

Unfortunately the big talking point surround the Ezra Mam/Spencer Leniu situation which was really disappointing to see and has been dealt with appropriately but the hierarchy, even with some input from key figures.

It was a tough week for the tipsters with many outsiders early in the season getting the chocolates.

I thought the Raiders were really good against a disappointing Newcastle.

Ponga was a threat but was contained well and the Raiders played some entertaining football

The Sharks did enough after a slow start and the Storm continued their round one dominance that has lasted over 20 years now with a shutout of the defending premiers in what was a strongly defence oriented match.

A few blowouts finished round one and it was as much of a query of was one side really good or the other really bad.

The Bulldogs never looked likely and what was a huge concern was the lack of footy seen by Kikau, Burton and new recruit and captain Crichton as well as their lack of intent to go searching for it.

The Foxx played tough with a severe shoulder injury and showed once again why he is important for the Dogs.

It concerned me that the coach said they won the last 20 minutes and that was pleasing - I can’t cop that, you lost the first 60 badly, real case of finding some sort of silver lining.

The Dolphins won everyone over last year with an emphatic round one victory against the Roosters but they looked miles from it against a red hot attacking machine in the Cowboys.

The Titans were disgraceful. No other way to put it at all. The video sessions this week would

To complete 23/24 in the first half and only manage one try from a kick really defies logic and puts the blowtorch squarely on some attacking concepts in use.

To be fair though the Dragons were very solid. Zac Lomax didn’t do his hopes of getting off the wing any favours by playing as well as I’ve seen in years.

For any young player who is on the wing and tottles out the line ‘I don’t get the ball’ or that standard parent line of ‘they don’t pass it out’, go and watch Lomax (or Rapana or To’o) put themselves in the game and want the footy with tough carries and take an opportunity when it arises.

Plenty of local trial games kicking off this weekend around the place for those keen to see some pre-season action.

Good luck to the Northern Rivers Titans Men’s team who travel to Sydney on Friday to play Monaro at the NSWRL Centre Of Excellence on saturday in the Men’s Country Championship semi final.

See you at the footy. Quinny

All hands on deck for Sailability

SAILABILITY ON Tweed is hosting a special open day for people of all abilities to experience the joys of sailing on Saturday, March 16, from 9am to 12pm.

Sailability is a group of volunteers who provide a sailing experience for anyone with limited abilities.

Sailability president John Stead said the club is seeking some extra helping hands this year to meet demand and share the workload.

“We have about 30 volunteers each Wednesday and we provide a 30 minute sailing experience for people with a disability,” he said.

“We have regular social get-togethers with the volunteers at local venues.

“Our three-metre dinghies are specifically designed with a heavy ballast, which makes them very stable and safe to sail.

“We will be having a social sailing day at the boat ramp, Dry Dock Road, Tweed Heads, on

Wednesday, Saturday, March 16, 9am to 12pm for anyone interested.

“The morning will include a sail in one of our sailing boats.”

Mr Stead said the need for new volunteers is urgent and he’s hopeful some local sailors will get in contact.

“If you have sailing experience that’s fantastic, but we can also help sailors brush up on their skills,” he said.

“If you have a boat licence you can drive the support vessel. On shore to help with registration, session timing and two-way radio operation. On the pontoon — helping clients in and out of the sailboats.”

Sailability on Tweed will be having an open day to interest seniors in volunteering with the group, on Saturday, March 16, as part of Seniors Week.

To find out more about Sailability, please phone Mr Stead on: 0400 322 499.

From New Orleans to Paris

CAROLYN PACKER, with three decades of professional experience in piano playing, and Cameron Jones, a guitarist, composer, festival director and educator who harnesses the vibrancy of authentic manouche jazz, are a talented and highly engaging duo, playing a unique style of jazz, blues and gypsy jazz.   Carolyn has carved out a unique niche in today’s music scene. Seamlessly blending blues, jazz, swing, funk, and soul in both

traditional and contemporary settings, she pays homage to the boogie-woogie masters with a powerful left hand and an unmistakable groove. Cameron’s deep passion for gypsy jazz guitar is immediately evident in his performances. He has made five pilgrimages across Europe, returning to the source of the genre to play with and learn from descendants of the gypsy

The two accomplished and experienced musicians have worked closely for over five years, performing in many ensembles, including Carolyn’s own New Orleans jazz band, The Stompin’ Rhythm Aces. They have collaborated on two acclaimed albums, and are about to

‘Dolly’ comes to Twin Towns

THE DOLLY SHOW with UK West End star Kelly O’Brien is coming to Twin Towns on Saturday, March 23.

Kelly and her four-piece band will bring you scenes from Dolly’s life and her greatest hits such as 9 to 5, Jolene, and I Will Always Love You. This show brilliantly captures the voice, verve, and voluptuousness of the legend from Tennessee.

Dolly Parton, who grew up in a one-room cabin in Tennessee with 12 siblings, has lived a colourful rags to rhinestone story.

“Dolly is one of the world’s greatest humans,” Kelly told The Weekly. “She’s extremely talented, a phenomenal songwriter and insanely beautiful. Her music comes from the heart and I think that really resonates with people. I am pretending to be her from start to finish and I see people’s faces light up. They think Dolly’s in the room.

“I have never performed in Tweed Heads before, so I’m super excited about that.”

Kelly grew up in Adelaide, and began singing country when she was 14. Two years later she was crowned South Australian Country Vocalist of the Year, and then Best New Talent at the famous pan-Australian Gympie Muster country festival. This led to her first recording contract and endless exposure as one of Australia’s youngest country singers.

Kelly has been crowned the UK’s best Dolly tribute by the Agents’ Association of Great Britain four times running.

In 2019, she was invited to sing in Nashville with Dolly Parton’s band.

Kelly was the winner of the twitter campaign #jolenechallenge as chosen by Dolly Parton and Netflix.

With stunning vocals, flawless comic timing, and a plethora of Dollyisms, this is a must-see show for any Dolly fan. Grab your cowgirl hat, your cowboy boots, a blonde wig, a big smile and come on down, y’all!

The Dolly Show is at 8pm Qld time on Saturday, March 23, at Twin Towns, Tweed Heads. For info and to book tickets, go to twintowns.com.au

Graham Nash at Twin Towns

THE LEGENDARY Graham Nash is coming to Twin Towns on Wednesday, March 27.

This is not a tribute band, but the real Graham Nash of folk-rock supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash, whose intricate harmonies and classic songs enchanted the world starting in 1969.

If you come from the Woodstock generation, or even if you don’t, you’d be mad to miss this once-in-a lifetime opportunity.

Born in Blackpool England, Graham Nash started his stellar career with British Invasion group The Hollies, giving us classic hits like Bus Stop, and Just One Look. He was 24.

Two years later, Nash met David Crosby and Stephen Stills for the first time at his girlfriend Joni Mitchell’s house in Laurel Canyon.

After dinner, Crosby and Stills sang You Don’t Have to Cry a couple of times and Nash asked if he could join in. As he told The Guardian, “I added my high harmony and the world ****ing changed. Joni was the only witness to that moment.”

The trio formed a band with the unimaginative name Crosby, Stills and Nash, and later invited Neil Young to join. Their inspired songs captured the spirit of lyrical innocence that suffused the ’70s, and had a lasting impact on music and culture.

Though their harmonies were sublime, relations were eventually explosive, fuelled by Young’s mercurial character and Crosby’s drug addiction, guns and prison.

Yes, Graham Nash has seen it all.

The Weekly contacted the great singer/songwriter the day before his national headline tour began at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre.

You are celebrating 60 years of songs and a

fascinating life. What can audiences expect to hear?

GN: The audience will be treated to a couple of hours of relative peace. They will hear stories from my life as well as songs they love and new songs, all sung with the same passion as when I wrote them.

Will you be catching up with Judy Collins who is also touring at the moment?

GN: I look forward to seeing Judy and perhaps singing with her. She has been a part of my life since 1969. [Judy Collins and Stephen Stills lived together in Laurel Canyon at the same time as Nash and Joni Mitchell were having a passionate, creative romance]. When I was given the John Lennon Real Love Award four months ago, Judy and I sang Imagine with Art Garfunkel.

Looking back on Crosby Stills and Nash, what could you all have done differently to preserve harmony?

GN: It’s possible that the best thing to happen to us was the addition of Neil Young. It also could have been the worst.

Nash has written over 200 songs including On A Carousel, Simple Man, Our House [for Joni Mitchell], Marrakesh Express, and Teach Your Children. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice — once with CSN and once with The Hollies.

Joining Nash on stage will be long-time musical partners Shane Fontayne on guitar and vocals and Todd Caldwell on keyboards and vocals. Twin Towns is the eighth and final venue on Nash’s tour.

Graham Nash – Sixty Years of Songs and Stories is at 7.30pm Qld time on Wednesday, March 27, at Twin Towns, Tweed Heads. For more info and tickets, go to twintowns.com.au

takes great pride in his work and is extremely respectful to his clients and there’s no job too big or small.

He relocated the business to Murwillumbah two years ago after living and working on the Southern Gold Coast for the past 17 years.

“My partner is a local of nearly 30 years and has a deep connection to the Tweed and surrounding shires, with family and friends living in the area,” he said.

Dean is hoping to grow his business and to let all of the Tweed Shire and beyond know about the services he offers.

“Northern Rivers Aqua Pressure Cleaning services all of the Tweed, Byron, Ballina and Lismore Shires,” he said.

“I always respond to every enquiry in a very timely manner and endeavour to get jobs done within a week of initial contact.

“I also offer flexible timeslots to cater to

my customers’ needs, such as weekends (including Sundays), early AM or PM starts outside of business hours, so as not to affect trade and foot traffic.”

For residential jobs, Northern Rivers Aqua Pressure Cleaning offers services of driveway and pathway cleans, gutter clean outs, patio, pool and deck cleaning as well as external walls and roof cleans.

For commercial jobs, we offer all of these jobs as well as carparks etc.

“No job is too big or too small, and if you have something else that requires a pressure clean, all you need to do is ask,” he said.

“Northern Rivers Aqua pressure cleaning is also a preferred contractor for some local real estate agents, cleaning properties for owners as well as tenants.”

Since launching his small business several years ago, Dean has received stellar reviews and testimonials from clients:

“Shout out to the legends at Northern Rivers Pressure Cleaning for blasting all that dirt and grime off our footpaths and bringing them back to new for when we return,” said one happy customer, Trident Fish and Grill.

“Thanks Deano, the driveway has never looked so good. Highly recommend Northern Rivers Aqua Cleaning,” said another happy customer from a residence. Call 0426 119 550 for a quote!

AFTERGLOW

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun; Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.I am the cloud, that's drifting by. I am the thoughts, inside your head, While I'm still there, I can't be dead.

Brims back Tigers girls AFL team

THE EXCITING Under 17s Tweed Coast Northern Rivers Tigers girls story just keeps getting better. This outstanding player group from across the Northern Rivers are proud Tigers and are fit, primed and ready to take on all comers in season 2024.

Following a fast and focussed training session at Barry Sheppard Field on Sunday, March 10, the girls met their sponsors, Brims Murwillumbah, suppliers of premixed concrete, concrete blocks, landscape materials and haulage. The girls were proud to link up with the Brims Family, who generously donated their time to meet the girls and bring over a couple of sharp and shiny trucks from their eye-catching fleet.

The girls polished up the premiership cup they won last season and proudly waved the flag as they shook hands and had a good laugh with Ian and Allana Brims, Shylie, Jacqui and Peter.

A surprise guest appearance was none other than Barry Sheppard, who the ground is named after.

The coming together was outstanding. It demonstrated the best of family, small business and community support for our AFL Girls. There is a passion and self belief among these girls that will take them to wherever they wish to go on their development pathway.

At the Tweed Coast Tigers AFL Club, over many years, we have forged our identity as a destination club for all ages, boys and girls, men and women. Our club philosophy and mission is about family, support, inclusion and getting the community things right. That reflects the Brims family values that they have been doing in the local community for over 80 years!.

Thanks to all the Brims Family. Our girls will be proud in your jumpers with their Tiger hearts pounding inside! We are doing this together in season 24.

Locals make national Indigenous grand final

22 – 27, coming second in the competition after a hard fought grand final against Western Australia.

Cudgen Cricket Club’s Pat Rosser, Matt Carvosso, with Anthony Kershler assistant coach were part of the Blues Squad in the T20 competition.

In Round 1 the Blues (5/129) beat Qld (9/100) with Rosser opening and scoring 30 as well as taking a wicket. They then went down 9/113 to W.A’s 7/116 who had only one game that day with the Blues playing two.

NSW on 9/116 beat Victoria on 10/92 in Round 2, with Rosser opening and scoring 18.

In Round 3, South Australia scored 9/64 and NSW took the win with 5/115. Carvosso took two catches, one for one run and the other for a duck, so well done Matt.

Rosser opened with 7 against Tassie, with the Blues finishing 19.5 overs on 10/125. Tassie fell three runs short on 4/122, giving NSW the win.

Those four wins put NSW into the finals, Round 1 against Tassie again, who sent the Blues in to bat. Rosser scored 19 towards 7/113 beating Tassie on 10 / 89. That sent NSW and W.A, on top of the ladder, into the grand final on day five.

NSW won the toss and elected to bat. Pat

Rosser was first up and performed brilliantly, scoring 36 runs (going out at 1/62) towards what should have been a winning 6/151.

Unfortunately the eventual player of the series, W.A’s Brock Larance, opened with 87 and pretty well won the game for the sand gropers. W.A overtook NSW at 5/155 with overs still in the bag, to give them the championship.

Despite the loss Rosser assured the Weekly they still had a great arvo celebrating their achievement.

Kershler, who nurtures local talent at his Kingscliff cricket academy, played first class cricket for NSW, is the NSW Bush Blues Head Coach and Country NSW Academy Coach for the North Coast Zone.

Rosser is a former state and national country cricket representative and was on the NSW team that took out the national titles in 20112012, winning plenty of respect.

Croquet Club grant

MEMBER FOR Lismore Janelle Saffin paid a special visit to Murwillumbah Croquet Club recently with news that the club has been granted $10,000 for the next stage in the upgrade of its iconic Knox Park clubhouse.

Ms Saffin said the grant was one of her election commitments and has been delivered under the NSW Government’s Local Small Commitment Allocation Program.

“The $10,000 grant is to complete the upgrade of the exterior of the Murwillumbah Croquet Clubhouse, so it can be painted and have secure windows,” she said.

“The Murwillumbah Croquet Club has been active in the community for close to a century, and their clubhouse is more than 70 years old

and has been identified as a Local Heritage item.

“In recent years the croquet club embarked on an upgrade, with the restumping of the building, a new kitchen and new electrical and plumbing work.

“I was pleased to deliver on my commitment to the Murwillumbah Croquet Club for the completion of the exterior upgrade so the club can continue to be a venue for many in the community to enjoy.

“It is great to support projects that help people stay active and socially connected.”

The Local Small Commitment Allocation Program delivers $400,000 in funding to each of the 93 NSW electorates to benefit local communities through capital works, services, events, supplies and equipment and playground and park upgrades.

Dream run for Caba Boardriders

IT WAS a huge weekend for Cabarita Boardriders at the 2024 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle series grand final at Burleigh Heads, having a dream run to the semis for the first time in the club’s history.

Kingscliff Boardriders were also one of the clubs to make it to the final, but went down in the first round against some gun teams.

Cabarita made it through their first round in first place, with Zahli Kelly scoring a 4.3, Kyan Falvey 6.33, Fletcher Kelleher a 5.1 and a 5.7, team captain Josh Fuller (5.3) and Keiran Conway a 6.4 for a total of 32.63, comboing the rest of the field.

The quarter finals were held in a wild, six foot maelstrom, with concern that some of the competitors would have trouble making it safely out with the notorious Burleigh rock jump off.

Kelly opened with a 6.4, Falvey could only find a 3.5 top score but then Kelleher scored 6.57, sending Caba back to second place

Conway opened with a big turn and locked in a 6.1 which put Caba into first. Fuller scored a 5.3 with 12 minutes to go and their power surfer, Kelleher, still to surf and a one wave penalty if they didn’t make it back in time.

With four minutes to go Kelleher nabbed a 4.93 and made the long run up the hill with two minutes to spare. That shot them back to the top (32.8)

and into the semi-finals.

Caba was on fire in the semi’s. A 5.5 from Kelly in tricky conditions, a 7.1 from Falvey and a 7.23 from Kelleher had them in the lead, on track to the finals.

They fell down in the middle of the heat and it was up to power surfer Kelleher to bring them back. He went for a massive reo but disappeared into the vortex, a valiant effort but it was all over for Caba after an amazing weekend. It was a massive effort in the wild conditions with the killer hill run, competing three times on finals day and six for Kelleher. For much of the weekend Caba ruled, and it was thrilling to watch. Well done guys.
