Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) said the permanent vacci nation clinics will close after more than 18 months supporting the region’s successful COVID-19 vaccination program. More than 128,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered through the local clinics, however, with significantly decreased attendance, staff working in the clinics will now be redeployed back to their previous roles in hospitals and health services, where they are needed most. NNSWLHD Chief Executive Wayne Jones thanked the community for com ing forward in such strong numbers and rolling up their sleeves to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations. “The past few years have been challeng ing for everyone, but our community has remained committed to getting vaccinated against COVID-19,” Mr Jones said. “Our vaccination teams have done a stellar job, contributing to the huge vac cination program which began in March 2021.“None of us will forget the massive effort involved in transforming vacant shops and office spaces into purpose-built vaccina tion centres in record time, as well as the need to relocate clinics affected by the devastating floods.” Through a range of permanent and mobile vaccination clinics, NNSWLHD has visited more than 65 locations across Northern NSW, including hospitals, shop ping centres, public parks, sporting fields and events, as well as several flood-affected towns.Local GPs and pharmacies will contin ue to provide COVID-19 vaccinations, as part of the more than 3,500 vaccine providers across NSW. “I encourage people to keep up to date with their jabs moving forward, as a key action we can take to continue protect ing ourselves and our communities,” Mr JonesAppointmentssaid. for COVID-19 vaccina tions, including winter booster doses, can be made via the federal government’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Finder
COMMONSENSE AND the power of the people have prevailed to sway the NSW Department of Education to back down on its plans to remove 49 native trees to make way for a temporary car park at Wollumbin High School. The Weekly received a flood of letters, calls and visits from concerned residents calling on the state government to “come to their senses” and scrap the proposed tree removal, which was all but a done deal until residents rallied against the plans. Both of the Tweed Shire state representa tives, Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin and Member for Tweed Geoff Provest, supported the community in scrapping the planned tree removal. While it was considered an early victory, many residents felt compelled to host a peaceful protest outside Wollumbin High School on Friday, September 2. “The NSW Department of Education is reconsidering the original car park plans at Wollumbin High School with a view to better balancing different needs and perspectives,” a spokesperson for the De partment of Education said. “While thorough due diligence, includ ing arborist and ecology assessments and planning advice confirmed the car park works were permissible under the rele vant statutory planning legislation, the history of the car park plantings was not something that came up either during due diligence or at a recent community information evening held at the school. “Now this new information has become known, we are taking the time to consider the implication for the previously planned works. “The department has asked the com munity for patience as it carries out the necessary consultation with stakeholders, including the schools and Tweed Shire Council.“Icanassure you that the School Infra structure NSW team are genuinely listen ing to community feedback and the school is supporting them in that process.” The rally was hosted by Northern Riv ers Guardians Inc and Northeast Forest Alliance, who said the fight for the envi ronmentNortherncontinues.RiversGuardians represen tative Scott Sledge spoke highly of the actions of the community to sway the government’s views. “I want to congratulate us all for a great turnout at Wollumbin High to protest the proposed cutting down of trees there for car parking,” Mr Sledge said. “Around 75 people turned up and we must try to alert the NSW Government that we want them to do better.” Mr Sledge referred The Weekly to Mac quarie University Department of Biologi cal Sciences Research Fellow, Dr Robert Kooyman, who knew Bruce Chick and provided some insights into the impor tance of Mr Chick’s legacy. “I knew Bruce from when I started work ing in our local forests in the mid-1970s,” Dr Kooyman said. “His involvement with Murwillumbah High School was long-standing to the point where his memorial service was held there.” Dr Kooyman stressed that “arborists are not ecologists or botanists”, after the Education Department said an expert arborist had authorised the removal of the trees as they were not considered threatened species. “So, I am unclear as to why an arborist opinion would have any influence on de cision-making in this case,” he said. “While planted specimens are often ranked lower in terms of potential impacts on a species’ population biology, the reali ty is that planted trees of listed threatened species still have to be evaluated in rela tion to the BSC Act 2016 and potentially the Commonwealth Threatened Species Act if they are federally listed. “Bruce Chick’s legacy is important on the Tweed and needs to be both acknowl edged and respected. “His influence on generations of the progeny of Tweed Valley residents and his early and pioneering work in conservation needs to be better understood. “Murwillumbah High School and the Tweed community owes Bruce (and Max Boyd OAM) a great debt of gratitude… they need to show some respect.”

Further to your article concerning the Wardrop Valley housing proposal, I am very concerned about the popu lation of the Tweed Shire increasing to unsustainable levels. What is a sustainable population for the Tweed Shire? Every council should decide what is a sustainable population and every state and country need to address this issueTheurgently.worldhas an unsustainable population, which results in famine, homelessness, and unemployment. Growth is not sustainable. I have addressed this issue in a recent web site I have launched called ‘World Sustainable Vision’, after studying the consequences of overpopulation for the last fifty years.

While in the town that the Dalai Lama calls home, we will also vis it the 600 children in government schools that The Pencil Tree sup ports. We provide all the basic school supplies needed for these students that live in very poor areas to prop erlySeverallearn.guests will also be travelling to the foothills of the Indian Himala yas, where most of The Pencil Tree schools are situated, to see firsthand the work of this Cabarita charity. None of this would be possible with out the support of so many wonderful local families, individuals, children, and now also small businesses and a growing number of people overseas. With sponsorship starting at just a few dollars a week to change an underprivileged child’s life, why wouldn’t they. All this is tax deductible and know ing that 100 per cent of sponsorship fees and donations gets directly to the children is a major incentive too. The next project for The Pencil Tree is raising funds to build a new kitchen and storeroom at the school and giving more slum children the opportunity of a decent education.
Lifelong learning As a former student of Wollumbin High School, having completed years seven through to year 12 from 1999 until 2004, I was privileged to be involved with Bruce Chick and his passion for native regeneration. Under his direction and coordi nation, a collaborative educational program was offered to students to regenerate the former farmland landscape of the school grounds with native species. I find it an insult to the pioneering work of students such as myself and the legacy of Mr Chick that such cru cial collaborative, educational and sustainable living contributions to the ecosystem are proposed to be destroyed.Myperspective as a 35-year-old is that Wollumbin High School, by name and motto, was an educational institution enlightened by the rich historical, cultural and environmental values of the broader caldera area that fed the school. Mr Chick and his regeneration pro gram was the embodiment of those ideals. I am not sure if it remains current, but when I attended the school, the motto was “together we learn”, and that is precisely what was offered to us as students through this program.Inostalgically remember planting trees under the guidance of Mr Chick with a peer, a friend who would later die in year 11 before we completed highWhenschool.Iheard of the proposal for the trees being removed, I thought what did we prove? What is the last ing lesson here? I know what it should be, I know what Mr Chick wanted it to be and what we as students wanted, and that is a legacy that we created, a small contribution that with time and growth stimulates more growth and life for flora and fauna. It is also a living legacy of individuals who are no longer with us, and it is an insult to former students and defeating future endeavours to de stroy that achievement. From my perspective the Depart ment of Education owes: A) Mr Chick and his tireless dedi cation more regard and B) The students involved an expla nation as to why their work is pro posed to be subject to nothing more than corporate convenient vandalism. If the school is to be merged and that legacy lost, then at the very least, as ex-students we deserve the respect and courtesy that our work is not in vain and remains as a living testimo ny to our achievements.
Aliesha Rawson, former Wollumbin High student 1999-2004 Pencil Tree update Last week the students at Pottsville Primary School held a fundraiser for The Pencil Tree and raised $760, enough to sponsor two children from a slum camp in India to have educa tion at a private school. This will give them the skills to find a good job and escape the generation al poverty cycle, and also help their families leave their life in the slums. They will be taught at a brand new four-storey 10-room school, the building of which was funded by The Pencil Tree and opened in late 2019. A group of Pencil Tree volunteers return to Dharamsala in northern India in October to visit the children. It is wonderful to interact with the students, but equally important is the communication in English, which helps them to improve their language skills.Avisit to the preschool in the slum is more about taking supplies and we provide crayons, colouring books and games, as well as food, drinks and clothes for all of the little ones. They will soon be attending ‘big’ school, where they too will achieve a higher education and the key to a brighter future than their parents could only dream of.

We have 24, 30 & 40 kWh cars at half the new price. Australian electricity prices have risen by up to 18.3 per cent under a decision by the Australian Energy Regulator due to increased cost of generation due to global rises in coal and gas prices. The increases, which came into effect from July, amount to more than $250 a year based on ACCC figures putting the average residential electricity bill at $1,434. in Solar Power, Grid,
Recently I was in Murwillumbah Hospital for a period of seven weeks. I wish to use your publication to say thank you to all of the hospital staff for their kind and caring treatment. I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment I received while there. While everyone was fully occu pied, I must comment on the effort that the nurses put into their work. Their work rate was exceptional. Having spent all my working life in the building and metal industries, I have some idea of labour intensity. And I would rate nurses with, or in some circumstances above, any I have experienced.Icanfullyunderstand stories that are publicised about nurses experi encing occupational burnout. They deserve better!

Tim Greenish, Murwillumbah Thank you to The Weekly I’d like to sincerely thank The Weekly, especially this recent week, for bringing to our notice so tactful ly the serious and unnecessary pro posed destruction of mature trees by the Education Department. We can hope that the ensuing pub lic outcry will help them see how traumatic this is and work with others to find a more acceptable solution to this atrocity. The Bentley Blockade has set the precedent that outcomes and minds can change if we stand strong. Thank you TVW! Cas Rifello, Terragon Potholes are dreadful I agree with both Bob Green (TVW, 11/8) and Ernie Kritzier (TVW, 1/9) regarding potholes on our roads in and around the Tweed Shire. I try always to find something good out of bad, but in this case, sorry, I Ican’t.understand we have had so much rain over the past few months and maybe the council having a problem to keep up with the maintenance, but the amount of money being wasted on ‘band aids’ to fix potholes which get ‘washed out’ as soon as there is another downpour is just crazy. It’s not working, our cars are being damaged and no one is listening. There has to be another way, surely.
Margie Coll, Kingscliff Talkin’ about Tyalgum As one of many Tweed communities recovering from the impacts of recent floods, Tyalgum is showing deter mination to overcome the loss of a direct road link to Murwillumbah. Flutterbies and Marketta Lane, the Tyalgum Hotel, the General Store and the Gelato Shop have led the way in boosting the local economy. Now it is the time for the Tyalgum Hall to take centre stage as the Tyal gum Music Festival Celebrates its 30th anniversary from Friday, Sep tember 16, to Sunday, September 18. Over the years this festival, always featuring high quality classical per formers, has attracted music lovers from interstate and overseas to join locals in appreciating the musical skills of the artists and the acoustics of this iconic village hall.

Woolworths Group own the site and have previously applied through Tweed Shire Council to redevelop it into a new shoppingHowever, precinct.theirplans were shelved after councillors voted against the Woolworths proposal as it did not include a recreation al asset for the community. Mayor Chris Cherry said the site is zoned recreational and losing the site would come at a great loss to the com munity.Woolworths said it remains open to con structing a mixed-use site, which would incorporate both a shopping centre and park or recreational space. Woolworths state development manag er Chris Sheehan told The Weekly the company had been fully briefed on the building fire. “We are aware of the incident on site at the corner of Brisbane Street and Con dong Street and have moved swiftly to investigate what happened,” Mr Sheehan said.“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the area and have taken the decision to demolish the vacant building.”MrSheehan said the company remained eager to build on the site and was keen to work with Council. “We remain committed to delivering a convenient and modern full-line super market for the Murwillumbah community and look forward to discussing the matter further with the Tweed Shire Council later this month,” he said. Woolworths said it will look to retain any historical elements from the bowls club, such as the iconic entry gates, and “hold them for use within any future develop ment that may eventually be approved over the land” a spokesperson for the company said. Mayor Chris Cherry said she has “no problem” with a Woolworths coming to the area in general. “But I think the site they have is not the right location,” the Mayor said. “I think we have to be very careful to protect the small businesses in our town, all of the specialty stores and businesses that make Murwillumbah a unique and interesting place to visit. We also do not want to have the existing Sunnyside shop ping centre undermined. “It is a strategic centre of town and a Woolworths development has the poten tial to undermine it if it is not carefully managed.”
PLANS TO push ahead with the proposed Murwillumbah Woolworths at Condong Street could be accelerated following an other major structural fire at the former Murwillumbah Bowls Club. It is the third fire in five years at the run down building, according to Murwillum bah Fire & Rescue Captain Greg Hayes, who was one the first firefighters on the scene on Friday, September 2. Capt Hayes said the building was “well and truly engulfed by flames” when his team arrived around 4pm. “The upper section and roof collapsed making it challenging to extinguish or fight the fire,” he said. Help came from Queensland firefighters who sent a ladder platform from the Gold Coast to assist in subduing the blaze. Capt Hayes said it was too early to com ment on the cause of the fire and whether it was deliberate or not. “Tweed Police are working with fire au thorities to determine the cause,” he told The“FirefightersWeekly. noted the site had missing and some broken louvres on one of the windows, indicating someone may have been able to access the building. “The metal louvers were broken out, but we are looking into the cause with police.”

LOCAL NURSES and midwives say they are “fed up” and “feel abandoned” by the state government over fair pay rates, staffing numbers and overall employment fatigue. It’sbeen a battle with the NSW Govern ment for more than 10 years, and Tweed nurses and midwives walked off the job in protest on Thursday, September 1.

High Court upholds farm trespass filming law

Frustrated by the NSW Government’s unwillingness to negotiate on nursing and midwifery ratios, public sector members of the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Associ ation (NSWNMA) held a 24 hour strike. Led by a 24-hour picket of Western Syd ney’s Westmead Hospital, Tweed Shire nurses and midwives joined more than 70 local community rallies in rural towns, regional cities and across Sydney. NSWNMA General Secretary Shaye Candish said the NSW Government’s re fusal to consider ratios to improve patient outcomes and guarantee a safe working environment sends a message that nurses and midwives are not valued. “It is a shame on this state that we have to continue to demonstrate in order to give patients the care that they deserve,” Ms Candish said. “The longer this government stalls on adopting safe nurse-to-patient ratios, the more we’ll continue to see more nurses and midwives leaving the profession.
NSW and Commonwealth laws enacted in 2019 impose up to five year jail terms for trespassers who secretly record farming activity. The penalties were brought in after cruelty was exposed by covert footage in the live sheep and cattle export, greyhound racing and horse racing “Australia’sindustries.

“The group told the High Court the NSW law interfered with the activists’ implied right under the constitution to freedom of political communication,” Ms Frayne said. “So-called Ag-gag laws can be used to target animal advocates and whistleblowers who want to bring to public light some farming practices that are unnecessarily cruel to animals.”
Another long-time nurse, who The Week ly has chosen not to name, said she be lieves a gender pay gap remains a major issue in the NSW health care sector.
“It absolutely does,” she said, with the support of more than 30 fellow nurses and midwives who agreed with her comments. “It’s something that needs to change. The system is not working for the staff. “The hospitals are buckling. No increas ing in mental health nurses. Community nurses are seen as the invisible. We want better staff ratios and better pay.”
THE LEGAL LIGHT!
The High Court found the relevant sections of the NSW Act “achieved an adequate balance between the benefit they sought to achieve and the adverse effect on the implied freedom”. The decision confined its focus to trespassers who publish footage of “lawful activity” carried out on private property, and did not consider cases which showed unlawful activity.

The High Court has upheld the NSW law that makes it a criminal offence for animal welfare activists and others to publish covert video footage taken as a result of trespassing on private agricultural property. Animal protection group Farm Transparency Project and its director Christopher James Delforce had challenged the constitutional validity of the NSW Surveillance Devices Act 2007, which makes it an offence to publish or possess covert footage taken on a farm or other private property. Anneka Frayne of Stacks Law Firm said the animal welfare group had sought to expose alleged animal cruelty in the past by secretly installing hidden cameras on agricultural property.
“The group told the High Court the NSW Act prevents their efforts to expose animal cruelty and abuse, which they argued they have a right to do under this implied freedom in the constitution. “They argued the law also hinders media outlets from using covert footage showing alleged cruelty at abattoirs and farms, even though the videos might expose alleged breaches of industry rules and animal cruelty laws. “The NSW government argued the laws were reasonable and necessary to protect farmers’ privacy and safety. The NSW law does not allow any public interest exemption.”

The Weekly met with a group of nurses and midwives at Knox Park where they shared some of their personal experience, as well as insights into their struggling sector. While almost all agreed that they love their profession and aiding others, they feel their pay rates and staffing ratios are not reflecting of a government that sup ports“Wethem.seepay rates substantially more in Queensland for the same job,” said one senior nurse, who quoted figures of around $6 per hour more for the same job in Queensland. “It’s why so many NSW nurses and mid wives travel across the border for work, you are more appreciated there.”

This National Threatened Species Day (Wednesday 7 September), it’s an opportunity to raise awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction in the Tweed. Since 2009, 281 grants under Council’s Biodiversity Grant Program have restored 300 hectares of habitat on private land. The program has helped conserve iconic threatened plant and animal species such as the koala, grey-headed flying fox and Coolamon rainforest tree. Additionally, since its launch in 2013, Council’s Land for Wildlife program has helped 202 private landholders conserve around 15% of the Tweed’s natural habitat. This habitat provides a home for dozens of threatened plant and animal species and several threatened ecological communities.Tohighlight how important the environment is to Council and the community, more than 350 people recently helped shape the future of the Tweed’s natural environment by participating in a community survey.Council’s senior program leader – biodiversity Scott Benitez Hetherington was appreciative of the level of interest from the community.“Theinput from these surveys will be used to prepare a new conservation strategy for the Tweed that will set our plan to protect our natural environment, manage our land and deal with conservation issues,” Mr Benitez Hetherington said. “At Council, our commitment is to work together with the community to reduce our impact on the natural environment and especially our threatened species. This National Threatened Species Day is an opportunity to draw attention to many of our native species who need ourSomehelp.”examples of Council’s work in this area include: Koalas: Council has been working with landholders and community groups to plant more than 55,000 trees providing 62 hectares of new koala habitat since adopting the Tweed Coast Koala Plan of Management in 2015. And koalas are using them! Monitoring has shown koalas to be using around 80% of the sites, some as soon as 18 months after planting.

Helium balloons will no longer be able to be released into the air at Council events or from Council-owned facilities such as parks and sports fields, following a decision by Councillors at their last meeting. At its 18 August meeting, Council decided to prohibit the release of helium balloons at Council-licensed events on public land and at Council-owned facilities, effective immediately. Additionally, from 1 January 2023, Council will prohibit the use or supply of all types of balloons, where all, or part of the event, occurs outside at such events and places. These changes will be accompanied by an education campaign to inform residents about the damage caused by plastic balloons. Balloons pose a significant risk to the environment, animals and marine life (including seabirds and turtles) who ingest balloon debris mistaking it for food, or who can become entangled in balloon strings.Council’sdirector sustainable communities and environment Stewart Brawley welcomed the ban. “The harm caused by single-use plastics is significant and we need to do all we can as caregivers of our environment to pass onto our next generation,” Mr Brawley said. “Our community cares about the Tweed environment and I know together we can make this shift in moving away from harmful singleuse“Thereplastics.are many alternatives to balloons to use for parties, celebrations or memorials, including reusable items like fabric bunting, paper lanterns and garlands or for memorials, plant a native tree or light a candle in their memory.” This decision follows similar action taken by other councils across Australia who have also banned balloons, including their release. This ban is in line with the NSW Government’s ban on plastic bags which came into effect on 1 June, and other single-use plastic items from 1 November 2022. Council’s Commercial Recreation Activities on Public Open Space Policy will be updated to reflect this new change. The Tweed has been through some challenging times this year with COVID-19 restrictions, the devastating floods and the ongoing flood recovery. The extraordinary challenges our community has faced in 2022 has shown some amazing actions by groups and individuals. One of the best ways to recognise those people doing their best in our community is through the Tweed Shire Australia Day Awards, with nominations now open. The awards are held each year on Australia Day (26 January) and provide an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate those who help build a vibrant community and make the Tweed a great place to live and visit.

The Tweed’s flood recovery continues to gather momentum as the full extent of the record flood of February-March is revealed. As the community marks just over 6 months since the devastating deluge of 28 February, the cost of the recovery is becoming apparent with damage to Council infrastructure estimated at $100 million. This includes damage to Council roads which is now estimated at $80 million – almost 4 times that of the 2017 flood – with 10 significant landslips requiring extensive geotechnical analysis and repair.Atotalof 2,900 jobs have been logged for flood repair on our road network of which 53% are completed, including 80% of emergency works. However, the remaining repairs are the most complicated and it is anticipated it will take at least 2 years to complete all the works. These figures do not include the thousands of potholes across the Tweed caused by the water inundation.
The release of helium balloons at Council-licensed events on public land and at Council-owned facilities has been banned.

Youth Music Venture ends on a high note

Move over Barnesy, young Tweed musos are tuning up and getting ready to rock at the Youth Music Venture showcase concert at Seagulls on Sunday 11 September 2022. The Youth Music Venture (YMV), a volunteer organization, provides programs for young people wanting to experience what it is like to be part of a band. The free program, open to young people 11 to 17 years of age, was launched in the Tweed Shire for the first time this year since it began operating on the Gold Coast in 2009. Council, along with Seagulls have been huge supporters of the program which has seen 21 young people from the Tweed develop their craft through high-quality mentorship from professional musicians over an 8-week period. The showcase concert will be a culmination of weeks of rehearsing and provide the band members with an opportunity to perform in front of a live audience. “We are absolutely delighted with the response to the program here across the border in the Tweed Shire,” Founder of YMV, Ian Grace said.

THE STATE government is expanding the at-home caravan program for flood-affected Northern Rivers residents to provide additional medium-term housing relief. Minister for Emergency Services and Resil ience and Minister for Flood Recovery, Steph Cooke, said the program was being extended to include residents in 15 areas across the Ballina, Lismore and Tweed shires. “Housing is the biggest challenge in the flood recovery effort and there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to medium-term housing solutions,” Ms Cooke said. “Caravans have already been delivered to more than 110 households in Woodburn and we want this opportunity to be rolled out to more communities in the Northern Rivers.” Caravans will be sourced from Camplify and located on the resident’s private property at no cost, with properties assessed during a faceto-face application process between owners and Resilience NSW to ensure it can safely accommodate a caravan. “It is now six months on, and our community is calling out for answers. We can’t afford to wait any longer – people need answers now about how to plan their futures.” Cr Cherry praised Council staff who have worked tirelessly to help the community in their recovery efforts.
SIX MONTHS has now passed since the dev astating flood and many Tweed homeowners remain in limbo over whether a crucial buyback scheme will progress.

“People need to be contacted and told what the eligibility criteria are. “To leave our people hanging like this, not knowing what their options are is simply not okay.“This issue is so much bigger than just the people who may be personally impacted. Tweed Mayor Chris Cherry said attention remained on the future and what steps can be taken to prevent such widespread devastation from happening again. “We can’t do much to control the weather, but we can plan better to make sure we are ready for any future events given the anticipated impact of climate change,” Cr Cherry said. “We want to build back better and are calling on the state and federal governments to support funding for mitigation projects such as future land swaps for business and residential areas so we can move off the floodplain.

MEMBERS OF Hoppers Brewing Co at Tweed Heads are jumping for joy after their ambitious and exciting new plan for a craft brewery at Industry Drive was unanimously approved by Tweed Shire Councillors during their monthly meeting on Thursday, September 1. It was second time lucky from the beer brew ers’ development application (DA), valued at $1.35 million, at 80-82 Industry Drive, Tweed Heads South, after their first application was refused but left the door open for amendments. Posting on their website, The Hoppers Brew ing Co team said the approval was one of the most “surreal moments” walking out of the council chambers.
“It was somewhat unbelievable and hard to fathom that the next part of our journey had finally begun,” the post via hoppersbrewingco. com“Youreads.talk about milestone moments in the evolution of any business. This was one and as I looked at the other Hoppers present, I saw a “Exhaustionchange. was replaced with relief and once relief had run its course, a renewed energy came over all of us. “To be finally able to move forward with the building of the brewery – our long-established dream.“Forit to be allowable or ‘legit’, as my 13-yearold daughter would say, was a profound moment in that time and place. “So, watch this space. It’s different now. It’s even more real. It’s legit man. And we love it.” The application had faced criticism from Council staff who recommended the applica tion be refused due to the area being zoned for daytime industrial use rather than night-time commercial activities. But in response to concerns regarding the proposal being prohibited as a food and drink premises, the applicant submitted amended floor“Weplans.were asked to look at reducing the size of our drinking/dining space despite the fact that our intended liquor license limited us to a maximum of 120 people at any one time,” the company said. “Although never preferable, in an effort to be flexible, we brought the bar forward, rejigged the still and reduced the size of downstairs drinking/dining area, as well as agreeing to limiting the upstairs mezzanine to the balcony area being the only space for food/drink.

Decking
Which CUTEK® exterior decking oil is right for your project? Drop into and discuss your requirements with a Williams product specialist. Williams Paint & Decorator centre, 22-24 WHARF STREET, MURWILLUMBAH. Williams have you covered for all your painting and decorator requirements. Trade and DIY solutions available.

There is a clear difference between decking oils and water-based deck coatings – a decking oil works by penetrating the surface of the timber, whereas a water-based coating will form a protective film on the surface.

A high-quality decking oil protects timber and maintains the natural look and feel of wood. With so many options available on the market, it can be difficult to decide which oil is right for your deck. Designed for and proven to work in the harshest of Australian environments, CUTEK® exterior timber oils truly penetrate and diffuse deeply into the wood core to protect it against liquid and gas-phase moisture. A core design feature of CUTEK® oil is its ability to stay mobile within the timber, actively working to displace and control moisture from the inside out, significantly improving dimensional stability and providing exceptional long-term protection. Additional maintenance coats throughout the timber’s life will have an accumulative effect, increasing the efficacy of the CUTEK®protection.oilsalso celebrate timber. The natural grain and texture of the wood is maintained and highlighted, not masked over, making timber the hero of your home project. Applied as a clear oil, CUTEK® will allow your timber to naturally lighten and silver when exposed to the sun’s UV rays. If you would like to retain the natural, freshly oiled look of your timber, or you would like to alter the colour to meet design requirements, a CUTEK® Colourtone can be added to CUTEK® oils. Because CUTEK® diffuses deeply into the wood, it will continue to provide moisture protection and improve dimensional stability even if the timber is allowed to weather and grey off.

Seagulls Club has thrown its support behind the program with dedicated re hearsal space and a stage to perform their program finale showcase concert. “We have four bands across a seven-week program,” Mr Grace said. “The bands practice and hone their skills together and will perform for parents, family, peers and the public just like rock stars in their special concert on Sunday, September 11, from 2pm.” Mr Grace said he moved down from Brisbane 15 years ago and saw a lot of youth issues and felt compelled to help. “That’s really the reason why I started the program at the Gold Coast and now here in the Tweed,” he said. Mr Grace said he loves what the power of music can do for young people and believes music holds the key to aiding kids in building their self-esteem.
“This donation will allow us to continue to nurture and support new mums in our community.” While not a big club, Lions members have big hearts, and this shows in the number of fundraising activities they carry out for the benefit of the local community and beyond on an annual basis. They are looking to engage new members so they can continue the fantastic work they have been doing since 1975. For membership enquiries please contact Bill Brody: 0411 406 143.

YMV founder Ian Grace said he’s pas sionate about helping youths through the power and creativity of music. Mr Grace has already achieved success with the YMV program running across the Gold Coast for the past 13 years, chang ing the lives of over 500 kids to date and producing a lot of talent. Invited by Tweed Shire Council, he’s now brought the program to the Tweed with the support of local sponsors, where he intends to set up for the long term and engage with talented young musos. He also has some talented musicians and mentors behind him including Melissa ‘Lissy’ Stanton, Isaac ‘Izzy’ Stewart and senior mentor Dean Fuller to name a few. “Our intention is to aid children in the creative sector through music,” Mr Grace told The Weekly during a recent visit.

“We also have some big plans to make it a permanent fixture thanks to the gener ous support of our sponsors Tweed Shire Council and particularly Seagulls Club, who have been absolutely amazing,” he said.YMV mentor Lissy Stanton said she’s enjoying helping young musos to find their feet in a challenging industry. “Playing in a band requires you to trust each other and work together,” she said. “You really need to develop your skills performing together, which is what we focus on.” The program’s first year in the Tweed at tracted 21 young musicians aged 11 to 17. “They were formed into four bands,” she“Theysaid.do bring some of their own learnt skills in their chosen instrument, our goal as mentors is to shape them into function al bands, so they can perform together, and who knows, they might continue from there.“This is a program that builds self confi dence and allows kids to realise they can achieve their goals and dreams if they apply themselves.” To find out more about the program and future intakes, please go to the website: youthmusicventure.com.au, or email: hel lo@youthmusicventure.com.au, or phone Ian Grace at:- 0424 143 140.

It is also expected to help cost of living pres sures.“The $4,000 temporary credit will be avail able until June 30, 2023, once the legislation is passed,” she said. “The government will also look to strengthen legislation to ensure pensioners who are work ing don’t get kicked out of the social security system.“Legislation to ensure pensioners don’t have to reapply for payments for up to two years if their employment income exceeds the income limit will be fast-tracked.” Currently, their connection to social security is cancelled after 12 weeks of exceeding the incomePensionerslimit. will also retain access to their Pensioner Concession Card and associated benefits for two years. WHEN FLOODS devastated the Tweed Shire, many people were unable to contact help, but now a group of Pottsville school students have come up with a solution that has won them a national award. St Ambrose Catholic Primary School students Madeleine Morgan, Eve Trimboli, Olive Ostila and Louis Beaumont were thrilled to hear that their entry into the National Science, Technol ogy, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) Make A Difference (MAD) competition had taken out first prize in the Demonstrating Catholic Ethos category. This week they flew to Melbourne to present their concept, an app that aims to connect people in need to volunteers in times of natural disaster, at the National STEM-MAD Showcase at the National Catholic Education Conference, inTheirMelbourne.appdesign was inspired by the long lines of volunteers they saw in Mullumbimby, the overwhelmed emergency services and the school’s music teacher, Mr Robby Cenda, who lost his home at Tumbulgum. Madeleine said the students decided they needed a way to help people affected by the floods.“Weknew a lot of people affected by it that haven’t had the help they needed so that’s how we came up with the idea,” she said. “Now we are looking for sponsors so we can get the app up and running, as well as mentors and software experts.” Louis said it was really exciting to know they had won one of the biggest awards in the STEM competition.Evesaidthey were nominated for three major awards and were also STEM national finalists in the STEM in the Future and Communications Award“Anothercategories.teamwon with the Flying Ambu lance, but we were really happy to get nomi nated,” she told The Weekly. Possums Preschool and Condong Primary have both moved onto the southside site as a temporary solution. Possums Preschool director Karen Shackell caught up with The Weekly recently to inform locals they are open for enrolments.
“We’re wanting to get the message out that we’re back and operating,” she said. “We’re looking to call this home for the fore seeablePossumsfuture.”was forced to shift from its Con dong site following the second major flood in five“Weyears.loved the Condong site, it was the history and sense of community it provided, was well known and it will be missed,” Ms Shackell said. “However, it is unlikely that Condong can be salvaged and our new site has everything weWithneed.”this in mind, Ms Shackell said it was time for a change. “We are now pleased to offer families a floodfree site that’s ideal for our needs and for the community’s needs,” she said. Ms Shackell said the partnership with Con dong Primary is a positive addition to school’s program.“I’dlike to acknowledge Condong Primary Principal Brendan Quinn and his team for their support and partnership in education, it’s been invaluable for the students,” she said. Ms Shackell is calling on parents to come and visit the new Possums site and learn just how great it is. “We currently have 2024 vacancies and would welcome any parents that want to find out more,” she said. Possums will undergo a major refurbishment with an exciting new playground in the works and due for completion by the start of 2023.

POETRY IS thriving, with students from year three and four from both Murwillumbah Public School and Murwillum bah East Primary School (MEP S) gathering at Knox Park recently for a combined sharing of poems.Murwillumbah School assistant principal Lou ise Watkins said that all students had written their poems during the past five weeks. “This is part of the joint collaboration process that is occurring with both the primary schools as part of the new Mur willumbah Learning C ommunity Primary School,” she said. “All students in Year three and four have participated in the com bined poetry unit, which focussed on free verse po etry,” she said. “Students learnt differ ent styles of free verse poetry, for example dia mante, magnetic poetry, roll away poetry, blackout poetry and Tanka poetry “All students wrote their own poems and then published their favourite ones. These were bound in a booklet with a title page and contents page. “Students from both schools met today at Knox Park and shared their poems with each other.“They then chose their favourite poem and some students read it to everyone present.” Ms Watkins said the event was a “huge suc cess” as it gave the stu dents a purpose plus an audience for their writing.“Allteachers from both schools thoroughly en joyed teaching the poetry unit, as well as hearing the poems presented,” she“Itsaid.was fantastic for the students to meet each other again, after a combined stage two sports morning which was held at MEPS ear lier this term.”

The next exhibition in the Margaret Olley Art Centre celebrates Olley’s love of flowers. The Art of Flowers will feature at the Centre from Friday, September 9, until March 12, 2023.“Olley dedicated her career to exploring the endless possibilities of humble, domestic objects combined with colourful, textural and sculptural arrangements of cornflowers, delphiniums, calendulas, hydrangeas, poppies, marigolds, flannel flowers, hippeastrums and more,” Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre director Susi Muddiman OAM, said. “For this exhibition we are bringing together some of the finest examples of her much-loved flower paintings, many of which are from pri vate collections and are rarely seen on public display.”Theworks span five decades, the earliest being Still life 1956 and the latest being Poppies and checked cloth 2011.
MODERN BELOVED is a new exhibition by artist Rosi Griffin which explores the Gold Coast’s architectural history and will open at the Tweed Regional Gallery on Friday, Sep tember 23. The body of work documents the suburban development of the 1950s and ‘60s — the mid-century modern buildings dotted along the Gold Coast. The artist’s aim is to celebrate our architec tural heritage and cultivate an appreciation of ourThehistory.exhibition includes a range of waterco lour paintings of existing homes — some are well known icons and others are hidden along theAllcoast.arefilled with character, colour and ar chitectural interest, featuring generous, large windows, lush gardens, and views to and from the landscape or the ocean — set against a back drop of vivid blue sky. “We are experiencing a revival and renewed appreciation of our mid-century history, yet most of these buildings are under-represented on heritage registers, still vulnerable and at risk of disappearing; old enough to be unstylish but not old enough to be worth preserving,” GriffinGriffinsaid.zooms in on Besser Block walls, to their individual geometric patterns. These formal designs are further explored and re-interpreted in painting and materials including fluorescent and mirrored Perspex.
In 1964 artist and art critic James Gleeson de scribed Olley as ‘… a symphonist among flower painters…’ as she forged ahead on the success of her first ever sell-out exhibition in 1962 at Brisbane’s Johnstone Galleries, with more solo shows dominated by still life paintings. Although Olley established herself as a land scape painter, explored figurative works, por traiture and of course interiors, it is her rich, evocative flower paintings that first come to mind when we think of her tremendous legacy inAlbeitart. a humble subject, The Art of Flowers is a splendid offering of rarely seen paintings by Australia’s most celebrated painter of still life. The exhibition is complemented by activities and events including free, drop-in artmaking activities for families during the summer school holidays. Travelling Film Fest is back

TRAVELLING FILM Festival (TFF) is back in Murwillumbah at The Regent from Friday to Sunday (September 9-11) with a specially curated program of the most loved and rivet ing Australian and international features from around the world. Travelling Film Festival manager Sanam Ro drigues said the TFF team are excited to return to The Regent and give audiences a “fresh and exciting program” on the big screen. “A total of nine feature films and three Austra lian short films will be screened in this year’s program, filled with fascinating and mind-blow ing storytelling from Australia, Ireland, Norway, Palestine and many more,” he said. Opening the festival is Australian director Macario De Souza’s 6 Festivals (pictured), an emotional tale of friendship between three teen agers who throw themselves into a whirlwind of music festivals in an attempt to escape reality. Shot at actual festivals and featuring various iconic artists, including Dune Rats, G Flip, Bliss n Eso, B Wise, Peking Duk, Ruby Fields and more, 6 Festivals is a moving love letter to young friendship and the life-altering power of live Highlightsmusic.of the program include We Are Still Here, an unparalleled First Nations cele bration interweaving eight powerful stories by ten directors from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. There are plenty more incredible new films to discover as part of TFF. Inflation is a dirty word, “a necessary evil”, they say. I have a feeling those “they” who say that are the ones benefitting the most, leaving the rest scrambling to survive. In the last two-and-a-half years of Covid mandate madness, small businesses and the arts sector have suffered the most. It was during this time that I thought it would be a bright idea to take on a small arts business! Opportunity knocks at the strangest of times, the Universe seeming to ask how deeply you really want to achieve your dreams. Enough to take a big risk? The largest leap of faith in my life has seen two years fly by, navigating ever-shifting rules, trepidatious audiences, and the film industry put on pause whilst streaming platforms raked in record profits. I am not a profit-driven person, thanks to my upbringing and fortunate fate in this lifetime. My parents taught me to give back to community, grateful to be in a position where we could! The Regent is indeed my labour of love, with the birth pains still keening, accompanied by a steep learning curve, as for any mother, flying by the seat of my pants most of the time, and trusting it’ll all be “all right on the night”. That’s the showbiz motto after all! I am lucky to have such a committed team on board the good ship Regent, as we sail into intrepid waters, discovering the treasures of local music acts, and gems from the movie world.Itisnot gold we search for, but it does take money to keep the showboat going. Circling back to the ever-increasing spiral of inflation, and the need to cover costs, I must raise my prices to align with other cinemas, after this weekend’s (subsidised) Travelling Film Festival.Asingle-screen regional cinema cannot compete with the multiplexes, gaining revenue from several screens all day long, under the same number of staff. Remaining unpaid, and increasingly indebted, I cannot continue operating as inexpensively, especially as The Regent offers a premium experience! So, thank you, in advance, for your continued support and understanding.

THE REGENT and The Sacred Sound Temple are pleased to present Carmella Gitanjali Baynie on Thursday, September 15, from 5.30pm. The event will open with local band GaiaTree Kirtan with food and chai available. Throughout Carmella’s career, she opened for artists as diverse as Eartha Kitt, Daryl Braithwaite, Jenny Morris, Tex Perkins, Paul Capsis and composed for top 10 artists from China, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Carmella was introduced to bhakti yoga and chanting in the early 1990s, attaining her teacher training in Thrissur, South India, in the Sivananda tradition. As Carmellaʼs commitment to the practice of bhakti intensified, she was initiated into bhakti in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. “When I heard the songs of the Gaudiya Vaish navas I took a deep breath,” she said. “These songs to God were the most beauti ful songs I had ever heard. I lost my heart to Krishna embarking on a deep dive into the heart of bhakti, the holy city of Vrindavan and the purifying magic of kirtan.” Carmella regularly journeyed to Vrindavan studying classical Indian devotional music in Vrindavan and Mayapur in India. Carmella has worked with many beautiful overseas bhakti artists from Karnamrita Dasi, Dave Stringer, Gaura Vani, Jahnavi Harrison, has sung with Deva Premal and Miten and Madi Das, Daniel Bellone and Sacred Earth contributing to Grammy nominated album Bhakti Without Borders. She performed at Bhakti Fest in California and is part of the Auricle Collective bringing visibility to sacred music in the music world. But don’t take our word for it, here’s some of the incredible feedback she’s received from national media. “Her music beautifully showcases Carmellaʼs impassioned and angelic voice and the result is both moving and inspirational,” said Wellbeing Magazine.“Beautiful voice! Beautiful spirit! The music on this CD evokes higher realms, the kind fre quented by angelic beings and devas. It reaches slightly higher too, to that devotional realm we might actually call ‘homeʼ,” said Steven J Rosen, author of The Yoga of Kirtan Tickets are $25, bookings via www.trybooking. com/ CCBQK or cash at the door.

THE BILAMBIL Jets have taken out the 2022 NRRRL premiership with a re sounding 30-18 victory over Evans Head in front of a huge crowd in The Valley on Sunday, September 4 and Cudgen took out a thrilling trifecta in the other grades. To get the Jets fired up Mickey Coleman filmed a well-wishes video featuring for mer Jets players Cheyse Blair, Luke Gar ner, Ryan James, Tarryn Aiken, Jahrome Hughes, Reece Robson, Klese Haas and Mitch Spackman, with well wishes from Josh Ado Carr, Hudson Young, Mick Fanning and the Screaming Jets’ Dave Gleeson. It worked. Colema said Captain Tom Rowles was knocked out in the 2011 grand final and played limited minutes but on Sunday he was man of the match. “Jets defence has won them games all season,” Coleman said. “Evans had a late fight back but a late Blake Forder try sealed the game “Jack Durhiem was fantastic off the bench and scored a try. Tom Raftery dislocated his knee early on in the game and left us with 16 players for the game. “Brenton Daley Holten and Lachlan Hallard were our two youngest but two of our Ladiesbest.”League Tag The Hornets girls took out the premier ship over Marist Brothers, 14-10 with a thrilling last minute Grace Sleba try. Grace also won the MVP. Captain Maggie Butler said “it was a flood of emotions” to get the win. “We are such a close unit and this is something we all wanted and worked so hard for,” she said. “It was a massive relief and something we will never forget.” Tom Rolles said it was an honour to take the win for the club. “It’s been a long time between drinks and it was good to see so many people out there to support us and Evans,” he said.“Itwas just a really good day for coun tryCudgenReservefooty.”Gradehadto fight to hold out the Mustangs in the second half, taking the premiership 24-12 and making it three out of three for the Hornets. Jay Mccallie was the MVP. Under Cudgen18swere on fire and took down Ballina 40-14 in what was described as “aMaxclinic.”Liles was MVP. Cudgen president Mick Channels is in hospital after a bad accident and his wife Louise said “he was very excited to see so many happy players and spectators for the Hornets.” “He wished he could have been there to watch the games in person,” she said. We have had so many funny, happy arvo’s at the footy (with the occasional dash of devastation). To the players who put it all on the line week after week, the coaches, trainers, canteen staff, grounds volunteers, gate crew, ball kids, bar staff and the family and friends who support ed them, thank you all so much for your passion, generosity and hard yakka and for bringing us so much joy. You make winter fun every year. See you at the footy in 2023.

INTRODUCING MANA: Principal Julie-Ann Manahan is pleased to announce some big changes this month with the launch of MANA Real Estate

FORMER RAINE & Horne franchisee owner Julie-Ann Manahan says she’s shrugging off the “stereotypical real estate franchise model” by launching ‘MANA’, which she said offers a new way forward. After seven years with Raine & Horne Ocean Shores and Murwillumbah, Ms Manahan and Charlie Markham have made the momentous decision to launch their own brand in the Northern Rivers and Tweed Shire. “We don’t want to be restricted by a franchise. We believe things can be done better,” she told The Weekly Real Estate. “Our focus is local. We know how special this part of the world is and we love our community. “Giving back is our mantra. And we want to do what we can to support the community, which is why we want to keep the money in the region, not prop up a franchise.”MsManahan and Mr Markham said they have listened carefully to what locals want from a real estate agency. The pair also bring a wealth of knowledge and have helped numerous families, couples, single parents, downsizers and upsizers make life-changing decisions. They have been there every step of the journey – through the moments of mid-campaign stress, the jittery pre-auction nerves, and that first move out of home into the student share house. “Our team is a salt-of-the-earth bunch. We put people first. We see the ‘serve us’ in customer service. This is your dream; we are here to make it a reality,” Ms Manahan said. “We want to make it a fun and seamless experience. Think of MANA as connecting the dots to make your property journey easy.”MANA is at the forefront of marketing technology and provides tailored property marketing.“Ourplatform provides marketleading psychographic solutions to improve and better understand the customer experience by recognising where the buyer and seller are along the consumer journey,” she said. “By optimising the timing and targeting of messages, offers and customer engagement activities, it enables them to analyse individual-level customer behaviour.“Thatway the right message gets to the right person at the right time.” Ms Manahan said the aim is to continually grow the local, national, and international network, engaging some of the brightest minds, influencers and brands across the globe. “There are no barriers, no third party, so we can give our clients, contractors, consultants and team exactly what they need,” she said. “Whether it’s finding a sparkie or plumber for their new home or liaising with town planners, council and all specialists associated with development application lodgement, we remove the stress from our clients.”‘MANA’ is the spiritual life force energy or healing power that permeates the universe, according to Melanesian and Polynesian mythology. It represents strength and soul. “It was the perfect name for our brand,” Ms Manahan said. “We are putting the soul into local real estate.” To find out more please contact one of the Mana team members by phoning: (02) 6680 5000.
