Get your entries into the DJ Stringer Garden Competition
By Jonathon Howard THE DJ Stringer team are putting the call out to Tweed Shire and Southern Gold Coast garden lovers to get their entries into the DJ Stringer Community Garden Competition. The competition, which has been running for the past seven years, was forced to have a twoyear break due floods, fires and COVID-19. DJ Stringer principal David Stringer said each year the competition has grown bigger and bigger with plenty of great prizes on offer. “This is the first time we have made entries and judging to be online and we’re encouraging entries prior to September 1,” he said. David said the judges are looking for not just the best garden, but ones with unique and fun features. “We’re also looking for the most well thought out, personal effort and input, unique and fun features and perhaps even a few lines on how their garden has evolved,” he said. “In the past we have met each gardener and really got a feel for this, so the more they can show and tell us via images the better.
“The man cave and water feature categories have been really fun over the years with some awesome entries.” Judging this year will be conducted by Duncan Gibbs – one of the Northern Rivers’ leading landscape architects and David Stringer, who has possibly seen more gardens than anyone else during his 30 years in real estate. In fact, David said a good garden can often hold the key to attracting buyers for those considering selling. “It is usually the first thing a buyer or visitor sees, and it gives an impression of the property overall,” he said. “It is very important to have a great garden that compliments the property from an aesthetically appealing point of view and can be maintained. “Seasonal variations of colour can also have a significant impact, hence why spring time is sometimes considered the best selling season. “In our opinion, a great garden and landscaping can increase the value of a property by up to 25 per cent.” David is also an avid gardening enthusiast, with a flair for design and understands fully

its significance to substantially increase or decrease the value of any property. “What I look for in a great garden is overall design, colour, plant selection, sustainability, scale of planting and how it frames and or enhances the property or space,” he said.
“This is first and foremost a community-based competition for the Southern Gold Coast and Tweed Shire residents and open to all ages. “One doesn’t have to be a professional gardener or have a green thumb – it’s all about
