Rail Trail tenders up for Councillor vote By Jonathon Howard IT’S CRUNCH time for the Northern Rivers Rail Trail tendering process with Tweed Shire Councillors expected to discuss and vote on one of the Shire’s most controversial and highly debated topics of recent times. The long-awaited Council meeting has prompted a public march from the Murwillumbah Train Station to the Murwillumbah

Council Chambers on Thursday, June 17, by four separate rail groups, who have recently banded together in a push to spare the tracks from being torn up. Council’s report highlighted that all of those businesses offering a tender have focused on a hybrid design of mostly “on-trackformation, with some sections of off-track formation”. We Can Ride Together co-creator and engineer Tom Rayner said he believes many residents and

businesses wants the train tracks spared. “In the Council meeting of May 6, a recent petition of approximately 800 signatures of people saying ‘Don’t Rip Up the Tracks’ was presented together with 24 business surveys where the businesses stated that they supported Light Rail plus a Bike Trail,” Mr Rayner said. “The business surveys were not accepted by the councillors and they stated the reason being because they didn’t believe the

surveys and the way the survey was undertaken. “Well – since that meeting, we have another submission to make with (at time of writing) 176 business surveys with 97 per cent wanting the tracks saved, and over 1,100 additional petition signatures and there’s also petitions coming from our school-age kids who have their demands.” Read more on Page 5.
