Historic home at Tweed Heads West to go under the hammer

By Jonathon Howard A HISTORICALLY significant residential landholding with a fascinating history has just hit the market. Known locally as ‘Rockpools’, the 6,867-square metre hilltop estate at 1 and 11 Lalina Avenue, Tweed Heads West, has been held by the Campbell family since it was settled in 1837. The property is being proudly offered to the market by Kollosche agents Rob Lamb and Tony Grbcic by way of an auction on Sunday, July 4. Mr Grbcic would not speculate about price just yet, but said initial buyer interest is split between local families looking to acquire the spacious land with three homes to accommodate extended families, and developers that see huge upside in the elevated position to build new dwellings with incredible views and privacy.

“It’s a rare gem to find a property that offers three houses across two titles for a combined land area of 6,867 square metres with 360-degree views from the coastline to the ranges within minutes to the beach and shopping centres,” Mr Lamb said. The family have provided The Weekly with a statement to share some of the property’s unique history, including the original cedar doors being salvaged from the old Commonwealth Bank in Murwillumbah. The story of Rockpools dates to 1837, when William and Ann Jane (nee Quirk) Campbell travelled by boat from The Isle of Man and settled on the mid-north coast of NSW where they raised 10 children. Later, several of the sons travelled and settled in the late 1800s on the Tweed, making the Campbells one of the first European settlers. “Our great-grandparents William and Rebecca had the family farm which encompassed from the Piggabeen area to Campbells flat (now known as Seagulls) and worked beef cattle, dairy, grains, small crops and logging. They raised 10 children,” the family said. “The original farm known as ‘Rocklands’, named after the many volcanic rocks found from the eruption of Mt Warning many years ago. “The farm eventually was divided between the sons (second generation), and the daughters being given a property in central Tweed Heads (next to Presbyterian church). being moved in its entirety to the Tweed hinterland and is still in use today. “Our late father (third generation) built our family farmhouse in 1956 from timber logged on the property. The house took years to complete with the majority of timber work being planed by hand. “Our family consisting of six children, (now fourth generation) all had our many chores to do, to enable the farm to be self-sufficient. “Over the years most of the property was sold with just a few acres remaining on the ridge. Panoramic views span from north to south, east to west. “In the late 1990s, the brick house was built featuring cedar doors obtained from the original Commonwealth Bank in Murwillumbah many years beforehand. “Over the four generations, the families have witnessed wars, depressions, cyclones, floods, droughts and fires.
