Student survey results
By Jonathon Howard
FOUR IN 10 primary school students and three in 10 secondary school students report being bullied at school, and two in 10 have reported online bullying, according to the latest student survey results undertaken by Healthy North Coast.
The Resilience Survey is Australia’s most widely used mental health and wellbeing survey for schools and reveals some shocking statistics for NSW kids.
The survey captured 6,611 responses across 75 Northern Rivers schools including many in the Tweed Shire.
A third of all students surveyed in primary school and more than a third in secondary school are at risk of depression and anxiety.
More than 40 per cent of all primary students were at risk of trauma-related stress,
whilst secondary students were less than 20 per cent at risk of trauma-related stress.
Another alarming figure is almost 30 per cent of primary students and 40 per cent of secondary students display disengagement from learning.
On the plus side, primary and secondary school students generally feel connected within their social support structures including teachers, family and peer support.
Around 70 per cent of students said they feel protected and safe in their schools and homes.
Vaping and substance abuse also featured in the survey, with 10 per cent of secondary students now engaging often or frequently in risky behaviours such as vaping, smoking, drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs.
New surfing reserve
By Jo Kennett
CABARITA BEACH has joined a network of prestigious surf breaks by being declared a Regional Surfing Reserve at a ceremony on Saturday, March 18, during the Surf for Sanity event.
National Surfing Reserves Board Chair
Brad Whittaker joined Mayor Chris Cherry and Councillor Nola Firth in dedicating Bogangar/Cabarita Beach a Regional Surfing Reserve of New South Wales.
Brad Whittaker said Cabarita is a “fantastic surfing community.”
“I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate today than sharing it with this great community,” he said.
“Thank you very much for the hard work in getting recognised in the National Surfing Reserve movement.”
Chair of Bogangar Cabarita Beach Surfing Reserve, Kerrie Foxwell Norton, said it had taken six years to put it all together.
“It’s great to be having it with the Surf for Sanity competition as this is our community and it’s about surfing and surfers,” Kerrie told The Weekly.
“The motto of surfing reserves to share, respect and preserve are things we can extend to each other, to share and respect each other.
“Although it is largely symbolic, it does give us a seat at the table at potential developments.
“There are a lot of changes and population growth in our little village and this is a reminder to those who come along now and in the future that this is a special place and to share, protect and preserve it.”
Cabarita Boardriders’ Chicka King said he loved to share the stoke in the surf.
“I got involved to protect what we have in this beautiful environment so it will be here for all these little kids in front of us, so it will be here for them and they can share the same stoke that we have to being able to live and surf in such a beautiful place,” he said.
Mayor Chris Cherry said one of the three criteria to becoming a Regional Surfing Reserve was that it had to have a reasonable break.
“The national and international surfing contests we have here really demonstrate just how good and special this break is,” she said.
“The public also had to be supportive of it and protective and recognise it as a great surfing beach. There is such a strong history of locals wanting to protect this beach.
“The last criteria was to demonstrate
that it’s been used for surfing for a long time, and it has been very well used for as long as anyone can remember.
“Sometimes it’s hard to share because it’s such an incredibly well-loved area. It’s been fantastic how locals say that it is here to share and that’s fantastic because it’s not always easy to do.
“The Cabarita community has stood so strong over many years and Kerrie has been working for many years to try to protect what you have here and it’s wonderful that the community recognises that what you have here is something really special.
“I’d like to congratulate you from Council that you work so hard to protect it and Council will keep that in mind when we are considering development applications that come to us.
“We will really try to back up the community’s desire to keep this the special place it is.”

Cost of living
I commend Tweed Valley Weekly for providing a platform for political candidates to address important issues.
Cost of living will be front of mind for many voters on Saturday.
Left-leaning candidates blame big business (privatisation and profits) rather than big government for our rampant inflation, but it was the draconian lockdowns and lockouts that forced the federal funding that fuelled subsequent inflation and hence interest rate hikes. After wanting JobKeeper to continue even longer, Labor laments inheriting a trillion-dollar debt that it helped to create. Lockouts also contributed to an inflationary shortage of goods and migrant workers.
Big governments made matters worse by increasing the cost of energy and thus of producing and transporting everything. Power prices will increase another 20 percent in July (25 percent in South Australia) thanks to mandated weather-dependent sources that greatly increase the cost of dispatchable (gas-fired) power. The war in Ukraine pushed gas prices higher, but the spot price has fallen since August to below the pre-war price. The reason renewable electricity isn’t cheap is that it requires a sophisticated grid and very expensive back-up utilities sitting idle until the fickle wind fails. Labor’s legislated price cap on coal and gas last December has done nothing except discourage further investment and thus decrease supply and increase prices down the track.
The Greens want to immediately increase the state’s annual education cost by fifteen percent while killing the coal cash cow which funds that amount ($3.5 billion) annually. Savvy voters know that big-spending market-manipulating governments only increase our taxes and cost of living.

Daylight savings drags on
And so it drags on. Well, so-called ‘daylight saving’ of course.
Why Solar Owners are Fuming
Do you have solar panels yet find your bill is now twice as much as it was last year? The electricity market is broken and retailers have attacked solar users with a double whammy - Slash the amount they pay for your solar energy and increase all the other charges. More pain is on the way -The federal budget is forecasting a 56 per cent increase in electricity prices in the next 18 months.
Unless you have solar batteries you are facing serious increases in energy costs. 888 Solar Tek have installed hundreds of solar battery systems in the Northern Rivers in the last 8 years and can help you with great deals on the most reliable and long lasting solar batteries in Australia. Get a Hybrid inverter and 4.8 kWh battery installed for as low as $7,888.
At 6am — lights on — still dark. Totally stupid and forcing one’s bodyclock to want to stay asleep, not being able to ‘get going’ easily for the day.
The extended two months is just so very wrong and there were thousands of people who petitioned the NSW government to at least delete those two months that make life harder.
The body clock, or circadian rhythm, reacts to light, helping people to wake easy to have time to easily prepare for their day.
The parliamentary discussion to keep the two extra months begs the question: “Did they really care or understand?”
I opt for the did not really care and as for ‘understanding’, well that was certainly out the window.

Speed reductions not the answer
Reducing speed is an easy reaction, but as you ask, “Will it reduce accidents and save lives?”
Having lived on Tomewin Road for over 30 years (one of the six to be reduced yet again, and I gather all the side roads up Dungay are all 60km zones too now), I cannot say I have seen an increase in serious accidents or fatalities which warrants this, either the first time or now.
Country driving is different, requires drivers to be watching and aware of the roads, current conditions, surrounds and wildlife, and driving to suit conditions. Not watching our speedo continually so as not to be zapped by mobile speed cameras.
Most people drive sensibly, many of us are long-term residents who know the roads well. Those who race and hoon will continue to ignore the speed signs anyway. Equally, if you are not confident on country roads, go slower, take another route, or learn and become confident. We each need to take individual responsibility for our driving skills and the quality of our driving. If not, what’s next — Tomewin Road has gone from drive to suit conditions to 80km/h (even on
straight roads through the cane fields) and to 60km/h — is 40km/h next?
For me, I am very sorry to see this.
I felt I lived in the country until now and loved our country roads in our valley. Now I feel I am living in the city with 60km zones and mobile speed cameras on our country roads, something I am not happy about. I am sure there are many others in the silent majority who share my sentiments.

Time to cast your vote
I am concerned regarding the voting system in this divisive state election.
My background is Country and Liberal Parties, however, in this Tweed state election, we have multiple candidates to choose to vote for.
To keep the other parties, excluding the Nationals, giving preferences to Greens, Labor or the Animal Justice Party is where this Australian community has fallen down.
We have seen in federal, state and even local government elections seats changing hands due to preferential voting.
I wish to voice my opinion that if you want a Nationals candidate to win the seat of Tweed, just place a 1 on the ballot sheet and do not list any other number.
Geoff Provest is the person to lead our electorate into the next state government term of four years, in my opinion. He is honest, dedicated, speaks for his constituents and genuinely represents the Tweed openly in all matters and issues.
Leon Darmody, Banora Point
The best candidate
All of the eight candidates standing for the seat of Lismore deserve respect for their active participation in our democratic processes. However, there is one candidate who is clearly the outstanding candidate. That candidate is Janelle Saffin, our current member.
The qualities that make Janelle Saffin the best candidate are her experience and her skills.
In regard to experience, Janelle Saffin has served distinguished terms in both the state and federal parliaments.
Reinforcing this actual legislative experience are her high level advocacy skills. Her advocacy for the people of this electorate has been characterised by commitment, knowledge and empathy.
The next four years in the Lismore electorate are going to be difficult, with the multiple challenges of flood recovery, housing shortages and costof-living pressures.
These are not challenges for someone who has to learn on the job.
We need the best person available. That person is Janelle Saffin.

Save our precious koalas
I would like to thank Deputy Mayor Meredith Dennis for submitting a nomination about Clothiers Creek Road and koala deaths.
With our Team Koala volunteers being continually out in the public, whether it be at a stall at shopping centres or having stalls at fetes or markets, the general consensus being a large percentage of the population are feeling helpless when speaking about the plight of the koala.
Eungella Blessed to live here
Ron Nuttall,
According to my previous verbal responses it seems I waffle on with too many subjects in one letter. On reflection this criticism is justified.
I guess what I am trying to say is that worldwide, our future is not very rosy.
We are now making capable our defences against a preconceived aggressor. We as a Western ally are not aggressive, we do not seem to want to take over another country?
I think it is related to the need for more territory to facilitate the growing population worldwide? Also for dominance, a dictator needs to satisfy his greediness. We are facing issues, like the previous world wars, where an expansion is needed to expand their power.
My life has been a bit blessed in that I still live here, but we as earth citizens should look ahead and reflect on how we affect, local, state and federal governments . Be aware of fringe political movements that do not see a realistic picture, but push for an unreachable climate target. Hello considering the pollution in countries beyond our control.
Locally, control your weeds, love your wildlife — it is not out to kill you but is ravaged by our pets and the wild
The wildlife carers who have to deal with the results of picking up dead koalas on the side of the road is extremely distressing.
Many people feel strongly about the three koala deaths in the last couple of weeks, including a healthy female and its gorgeous baby.
This issue has been talked about for at least ten years and really it is time that something has to be done, and with urgency.
Team Koala has tried hard to conduct a very polite and respectful campaign. We have encouraged people to speak to their local councillor in a friendly and positive way, and all the interactions with Council have been in that way.
The councillors voted unanimously in support of Meredith Dennis’ nomination at the Council meeting, The community want a good outcome for everybody.
We do not think this issue in any way divides the community. To the contrary, people from all walks of life and backgrounds want something to be done urgently about Clothiers Creek Road. The koalas and other wildlife in the Cudgen Nature reserve deserve a fair go. The people who speed on this perilously dangerous road need to be educated about the consequences of doing this. I congratulate the councillors who recognise this. Let’s hope the Regional Roads Minister recognises it also.
Jenny Hayes, Team Koala

Debate over Fingal store
By Jo Kennett
TWEED MAYOR Chris Cherry and Deputy Mayor Meredith Dennis met with Fingal Head residents last week to hear their concerns over the development of what they say is a “large-scale industrial bakery” at the site of the general store and post office.
According to one of the residents who helped to organise the meeting, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were “welcomed warmly” by the community and thanked for taking an interest in what they are calling a “controversial” development application (DA) that will proceed before Council for determination.
“Emotions in the Fingal community have been raging over the potential construction of the large-scale destination-style bakery in the heart of our small quiet residential village,” the resident, who did not want to be named, said.
Residents say the new owners of the development site who have successfully established and on-sold other bakery businesses on the Gold Coast such as BamBam, Custard Canteen and The Farm, bought the Fingal Head General Store and Post Office business nearly two years ago “and proceeded immediately to shut the door of the 115-year-old facility that serviced the needs of the community for generations.”
At the meeting, Mayor Cherry explained the process that now lays before Council in assessing the DA, and listened to the presentations, comments and concerns from residents attending the meeting.
“It is important that the council takes a firm stand here regarding this type of request for commercial and industrial development on and in amongst residential
zoned areas as it will set a precedent for other developers to undermine and erode the Tweed’s zoning plans and policies,” one resident told the councillors.
According to one of the organisers, Mayor Cherry and Deputy Mayor Dennis acknowledged that Council had received a large number of objection letters regarding the development and assured the Fingal community that they would read every objection personally over the next two months.
Residents were also encouraged to continue sending in their letters, both for and against, if they had not done so already as these will continue to be acknowledged as the DA progresses.
Mayor Cherry said that it was well known that the Fingal community, although small, had a very strong voice
when it came to fighting development.
Michelle Maughan, who lives next door to the development said, “We actually welcome a suitable shop on this site.”
“The community misses its general store and post office and the occasional Food Truck Friday,” she told the two councillors.
“We just don’t want this kind of Gold Coast business model, as it caters to outsiders rather than the needs of our community.”
Another longtime Fingal resident said they were ready to fight the development.
“Here in Fingal, we may be as quiet as mice most days, but when there is a need, we can roar like a lion,” Roger Graf said.
The owners of the site were approached for a response, but were unable to comment prior to the print deadline.

THE LEGAL LIGHT!
Zombie workplace agreements and the law
Zombie workplace agreements don’t necessarily mean you will be pursued and devoured by the living dead when you turn up for work. It’s a term to describe ageing workplace agreements that will be declared deceased by the end of 2023.
Business lawyer Geoff Baldwin at Stacks Law Firm explains that all workplace agreements made before the commencement of the Fair Work Act 2009 that are still in operation will automatically terminate on 7 December 2023.
“The Fair Work Commission recently revealed there are more than 100,000 zombie workplace agreements still in place, some of them dating back unchanged to the 1990s,” Mr Baldwin said.
“They range from large companies that are Australian arms of multinational corporations to thousands of small businesses.”
The Labor government said the requirement to set new workplace agreements would modernise pay and conditions for workers.
Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations
Tony Burke said zombie agreements had been a “major loophole undercutting pay and conditions”.
The end of zombie work agreements was legislated in the government’s Secure Jobs, Better Pay Act, which on 7 December ends all workplace agreements established before 1 January 2010.
Businesses reliant on those outdated agreements, many of which date back to the WorkChoices era, have until 6 June 2023 to provide a written alert to any covered employees.
Mr Baldwin warned that employers who fail to alert affected employees about the new workplace agreement requirements may face compliance action or civil penalties levelled by the Fair Work Commission.
“Employers should get legal advice to ensure they comply with the new workplace agreement laws and understand how their business will be impacted,” Mr Baldwin said.
“The laws are often complex, requiring examination of several new pieces of legislation and the results of court judgements.”
Infringing workplace laws can lead to fines of $1,650 per breach for an individual, and $8,250 per breach for a company. Court litigation for serious contraventions of workplace agreements can lead to fines up to $165,000 per breach for an individual and $825,000 per breach for a company.
If an employee applies to terminate a zombie agreement in the coming months, employers may ask the FWC for a transitional period of up to 12 weeks before it takes effect.
But the FWC must compare the terms of the proposed agreement with the modern award that would otherwise apply for the employee. The FWC sets out to ensure employees are better off overall under the new enterprise agreement, taking into account base rate of pay, penalty rates, casual rates, overtime rates, allowances and rostering.

Millions for Tyalgum Rd
By Jonathon Howard
GOOD NEWS for Tyalgum residents and businesses this week with the awarding of a $16-million contract to SEE Civil who over the next 12 months or so, will design and repair the Tyalgum Road landslip.
A further $4 million will go towards additional costs on the project, such as land acquisition and site work, bringing the total cost of the Tyalgum Road landslip to a record $20 million.
Design work is expected to take until late May to complete and work is expected to start on-site around the same time.
The funds are being provided by the state government via its Disaster Recovery Grant program, which is being forward funded to aid the Tweed’s recovery.
The bad news is a service road, which will allow traffic to flow again for the first time since the February flood of 2022, will most likely be opened in the last quarter of 2023 — hopes are for September.
The project, pending weather and unforeseen circumstances, is expected to reopened in early 2024.
Speaking with The Weekly on-site, SEE Civil construction manager Rob Blyth said he was hopeful to have the service road open by September 2023 under a best-case scenario.
“However, there could be some unforeseen issues under the landslip that we have not accounted for at this stage,” he said.
“But our hope is to have the service road open as soon as possible, or by the last quarter of 2023.”
Additional work on Limpinwood Road, which will remain Tyalgum’s primary access route, will also commence in May.
Mr Blyth said the landslip will require around 200 concrete piles to be drilled down to around 30 metres to prevent further slips on the 100-metre stretch of unstable road.
The landslip section may also need to deviate inland, and Council is working with the landholder on any possible land acquisitions once the final design is made available.
Mr Blyth said the Tyalgum Road tender would be one of the company’s largest landslip projects ever undertaken, but he’s confident in his team’s ability.
“We deal with many large projects, but in terms of landslips of this nature, Tyalgum Road is one of the biggest,” he said.
“We will have a team of around 16
workers on-site throughout the project using heavy machinery to drill down and stabilise the site.”
Mr Blyth said the company was acutely aware of the need to get Tyalgum Road open as soon as possible.
Mayor Chris Cherry said the announcement represents a significant milestone in the shire’s recovery.
“I know the Tyalgum community has been frustrated by the time it has taken to get to this stage, and I thank them for their patience,” she said.
“Now we have this contract in place, SEE Civil will be able to continue the process of designing and working on restoring our road network in a manner that will make it more resilient and able to better deal with the challenges of future natural disasters and climate change.”
Pledge to dredge strategy
A RE-ELECTED NSW Coalition government will commit $33.7 million to deliver the state’s first Dredging Strategy which would include the Tweed River.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said regular dredging will provide long-term benefits to the state’s waterways, particularly after flooding events seen over the past 12 months.
“For too long, dredging in NSW has been funded, managed and delivered in a case-by-case way — reacting to major weather events when they come, river by river,” Mr Toole said.
“That’s why we’re rewriting the rulebook to make sure the 24 coastal communities
with major waterways can plan with confidence, knowing that their rivers, harbours and estuaries will be dredged regularly and comprehensively until 2053 — ensuring access for everyone who uses them.”
Member for Tweed Geoff Provest welcomed the commitment as a major investment in the Tweed Shire.
“Everyone here knows that dredging needs to happen regularly to keep the Tweed River open, but we can’t keep starting from scratch every time the river fills up and the safety of users is put at risk,” Mr Provest said.
“That’s why this commitment is a game-changer for the Tweed — giving us
a clear plan for the next 30 years so we can keep local business and tourism thriving.”
A Strategic Business Case for the LongTerm Navigational Dredging Program has been developed by Transport for NSW which examined the various options for delivery of a state-wide program, concluding that an out-sourced, long-term contract with private dredging operators in NSW would achieve best value-for-money.
The Long-Term Navigational Dredging Program is a Transport for NSW-led initiative involving the Centre for Maritime Safety and the Maritime Infrastructure Delivery Office.

Pottsville Environment Park repairs
Pottsville Environment Park will soon undergo some repairs and upgrades to deteriorating walkways and platforms, increasing access for people of all abilities, and improving the visitor experience.
Many of the timber footbridges and platforms which elevate the tracks above wet ground were built in the 1980s and are due to be replaced.
Council is currently assessing the park’s infrastructure, costing repairs and replacements and investigating options for sustainable materials to better cope with the environmental conditions in the park. Areas of highest deterioration will be prioritised for immediate repairs, with longer term upgrades and visitor experience improvements to follow. Good news for Tyalgum and other slip repairs
Work to repair the significant landslip on Tyalgum Road is set to progress, with a $16 million contract awarded to local construction company SEE Civil Pty Ltd.
SEE Civil is also the preferred contractor for the $2.3 million project to restore the two slips on Limpinwood Road – the main alternative access route to Tyalgum village. Transport for NSW is currently assessing the proposed works prior to Council awarding of the contract.
Tyalgum Road is one of several major landslips in the Tweed that occurred during last year’s record flood, with the others including Scenic Drive, Reserve Creek Road, Kyogle Road, Mt Warning Road and Limpinwood Road.
At its meeting on 2 March, Council selected a preferred contractor which will allow work to commence on completing designs and construction of the landslips on Kyogle Road and Mt Warning Road.
Civil Mining & Construction Pty Ltd has been selected for three contracts worth more than $28 million to restore three sites on Kyogle Road and also the contract to restore Mt Warning Road worth more
than $11 million. Transport for NSW is currently assessing the proposed works prior to Council’s awarding of the contract.
Combined, these works represent $61 million – or almost half – of the Tweed’s $125 million total repair bill following the 2022 flood. Work is already underway to complete designs for the restoration of Reserve Creek Road ($6 million) expected to be completed after Easter when on-site work will commence, with the goal of establishing temporary access by mid-year. This is another contract awarded to SEE Civil.
And construction to restore two slips at Scenic Drive, Bilambil Heights was completed in February at a cost of $4 million.
All of these flood recovery works are funded through the Australian and NSW Governments’ Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Miconia: Have you seen this invasive weed?
This is Miconia - an aggressive and invasive weed tree that quickly dominates rainforests, destroying habitat and causing landslides. In Tahiti it’s known as the ‘green cancer’, and in Hawaii they call it the ‘purple plague’. Just as it has destroyed island forests internationally, Miconia is a huge threat to our beautiful rainforests here in the Northern Rivers.
Luckily, Miconia is only present in NSW in low numbers, and we still have a chance to eradicate it. We need your help to find every last Miconia plant in our region!
So how do you spot this weed
➡ The leaf is very distinctive with its unique three lateral veins and bright pinky purple underside. These can grow up to 80cm in length.
➡ Fruit are small round berries that are less than 1cm across and contain up to 200 seeds.
➡ Flowers are small and white and grow in dense clusters.
Development application determinations
Invasive weeds like Miconia threaten our local communities, industries, environment and way of life. The only way to stop them is if we work together!
If you would like to learn more about Miconia or would like to report a suspected sighting, please phone Rous County Council’s weed biosecurity team on 02 66 233 800 or send us an email.
Together we can keep the Northern Rivers beautiful, productive and free of Miconia.
For assistance in identifying a weed or to report a weed go to rous.nsw.gov.au/report-a-weed or call us on 02 6623 3800.

Tweed officer charged
A FORMER senior constable was charged at Tweed Heads this week over historical sexual offences in the state’s south in 1998.
A statement from NSW Police said its Professional Standards Command commenced an investigation in June 2020, following a report that a woman had “allegedly been sexually assaulted by a police officer in the state’s south in 1998.”
“Following extensive inquiries, a 53-year-old man was arrested at Tweed Heads Police Station about 10am today (Tuesday 21 March 2023),”
police said.
Police will allege in court that in October 1998, the then aged 28-year-old officer sexually assaulted the woman, then aged 17, while on-duty.
The man was charged with two counts of assault with act of indecency, two counts of sexual intercourse without consent and holder of public office misconduct.
The man was granted conditional bail and will front Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday, April 24.
Driver busted at 215km/h
By Jo Kennett
A DRIVER put lives at risk by reaching speeds police described as “outrageous” on the Pacific Highway near Clothiers Creek earlier this month.
Tweed Police have just released details of the offence, saying that on Saturday, March 4, Highway Patrol officers detected a 40-year-old man from Queensland driving a grey Volkswagen Golf R entering the Pacific Motorway from Clothiers Creek at an estimated speed “in excess of the prevailing 110km per hour speed limit.”
The driver then accelerated quickly, reaching speeds of 199km/h before reaching a speed of
“not less than 215km/h in a 110 km/h speed zone.”
The male driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was stopped a short distance away.
He produced a suspended Queensland interstate licence.
The man was charged with exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, driving in a dangerous manner and driving while his licence was suspended.
He will front Murwillumbah Local Court at a later date.
Police said that his visiting privileges to drive in New South Wales were immediately suspended.
The driver of this VW Golf was busted doing 215km per hour where the radar took a capture at 199
Arrested after 20 years
A WOMAN who was on the run for 20 years has been extradited from Western Australia for historical armed robbery offences at Murwillumbah in 2002 after fleeing while on bail in 2003.
The 62-year-old was arrested in Nimbin with a man on April 25, 2002, for an alleged robbery while armed with a knife at a Murwillumbah hairdressers committed several days earlier.
During that offence, a victim sustained a laceration to her arm requiring stitches.
Tweed Police said that in 2003 the woman fled while on bail and has been on the run for
the past 20 years.
Tweed-Byron Police District detectives working with Western Australia Police Force located the woman and on Wednesday, March 15, she was extradited to Sydney.
She was interviewed and charged with aggravated robbery, robbery, failing to appear to meet her bail conditions and “obtaining money etc by deception”.
The woman was refused bail and appeared before the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on Thursday, March 16.
Cops target motorbikes
TWEED POLICE say they are taking a “zero tolerance” approach to anyone riding unregistered motorbikes on public roads after charging a rider with several offences near Hastings Point recently.
Tweed Police said they are increasing their presence between Kingscliff and Pottsville to address the increasing number of youth riding unregistered motorbikes “in a dangerous manner in parklands and on road-related areas.”
Police said Highway Patrol officers stopped an unregistered Shineray 200cc AG Motorbike on Round Mountain Road near Hastings Point on Thursday, March 9.
The rider was charged with numerous offences including not stopping when directed to do so and being unlicensed for the class of bike (he only held a learner car licence).
He was also charged with riding an unregistered class A vehicle on the road, riding an
unregistered vehicle and riding an uninsured vehicle.
Police said that “zero tolerance” will be afforded to anyone riding unregistered motocross bikes on roads or trespassing on private property (bushland) in the Tweed-Byron Police District.”
The rider was caught near Hastings Point as Tweed Police begin the crackdown on illegal riders

NSW VOTES 2023
By Yvonne Gardiner
IN THIS final week of the NSW election campaign, The Weekly asks Tweed and Lismore candidates a question of great importance.
What is their “vision for the future and why are you the best candidate?”
The MPs elected as our representatives in the NSW Legislative Assembly this Saturday, March 25, will be responsible for representing the region’s interests, direction and wellbeing for up to four years.
During that time, there will be many challenges, among them the cost of living, protection of the environment, the housing crisis, flood recovery, skills shortages, infrastructure and education.
In the past eight weeks, The Weekly has invited comments from candidates on these very topics, so that voters are better informed when they go to the polls.
To make an informed decision please read these articles in past issues of The Weekly via: www.tweedvalleyweekly.net.au
TWEED
Geoff Provest (Nationals)
It has been a great honour and privilege to represent Tweed in the NSW Parliament for the past 16 years, both in government and in opposition. During this time, I have been able to deliver on many fronts for Tweed residents.
The big items are easily identified — the Tweed Valley Hospital, new ambulance stations, new fire stations, upgraded schools and the TAFE, Sexton Hill Bypass, Kirkwood Road Interchange, and many other major
capital works including the Rail Trail and the ongoing study into bringing the light rail from Queensland into South Tweed.
But it’s not just about capital works; in government we have implemented many programs that benefit individuals, not just the community as a whole. The Regional Seniors Travel Card, vouchers for travel and accommodation, back-to-school vouchers, childcare and active kids’ vouchers and rebates on the cost of energy, just to list a few.
I have been successful in gaining support for our local environment and seeing almost 400 hectares of land purchased to protect Tweed Coast koalas. Although I am a member of the Nationals, I have threatened to cross the floor on issues which would adversely impact the Tweed environment such as coal seam gas and private forestry agreements, which resulted in the government of the day withdrawing the proposed Bill.
During COVID and the devastating closure of the Queensland border, and then again during the recent floods, I was able to work with the mayor and my colleagues of all political persuasions to make a real difference for those I represent.
When things seemed unfair, I worked hard to have them changed, particularly after the flood when those who lived in caravans were not included in the flood relief package.
This was changed as a direct result of my efforts, and those of my colleagues in this region. I remain 100 per cent committed to the Tweed and, with your support, I will continue to represent the Tweed electorate and
VISION FOR THE FUTURE – WHY ARE YOU THE BEST CANDIDATE?
deliver the services and infrastructure we need into the future.
Susie Hearder (Animal Justice Party)
I would love to see kindness, compassion and empathy, where our natural world is revered and protected so that all beings can thrive equally and our planet can prosper for future generations.
This election is critical for koalas; their habitat needs protection throughout NSW, not just in Tweed. We can’t have a future without koalas.
I want to see our beautiful Tweed and its natural assets protected, development in line with nature and our community consulted and respected.
A community without homelessness or poverty, where everyone has an affordable, safe, secure and resilient home, access to free education, medical/dental care, full staff-patient ratios, and fair pay and conditions for the work they do.
People, animals and the environment above profits.
Where animals are not considered property and confined and deprived in intensive animal agriculture or abused for profit/entertainment, left without shade/shelter, drown on floodplains, or die a terrifying death just for our pleasure or because they are excess to industry needs.
Where our public native forests devastated by the Black Summer Fires, yet currently being logged at taxpayer expense, are protected for all. Where brave whistleblowers are listened to. Our legislation in NSW needs major reform, especially the protection of animals, the environment and the vulnerable. I have dedicated three
decades in the Tweed volunteering towards a more humane/compassionate society and would continue this as your elected MP.
I will protect our wildlife and pets, act on the climate emergency, end factory farming, end the use of animals for ‘entertainment’ and profit like greyhound racing, and help the vulnerable in our community.
Please vote for kindness and koalas this election. Vote #1 Animal Justice Party to send a powerful message that you care about animals, people and the environment. If we don’t win, your vote goes to whoever you put #2.
Ciara Denham (Greens)
The Greens are for real action on the climate and cost-of-living crisis. We will make sure that Tweed has a sustainable and vibrant future that is not overrun by developers and private vested interests.
I will never accept donations from corporations or developers. I will stand up for our public sector workers, I will fight to protect our animals of this region and our incredible natural biodiversity. I will advocate for free public transport.
Your vote is powerful, and with it, it can support the Greens’ vision for the future of Tweed where everyone has a safe place to call home. Your vote can be for real action against short-term holiday letting, and the implementation of more public and social housing in our region.
With your vote, you can vote for a future where everyone has access to quality public services, which are supported the way they deserve. With voting for the Greens, you’re voting for the public sector wage cap being removed, a pay rise for teachers, all
of the NSW Nurses and Midwifery Association patient-staff ratios being implemented, and more funding for more paid firefighters.
All of this can be paid for with measures such as a levy being placed on the current government-subsidised coal, oil and gas industry, and stopping the government-subsidised native logging industry.
I want to see Tweed retain its name as a biodiversity hotspot, with local councils being empowered to protect koala habitat, including in the hinterlands of our Tweed.
My background in conservation and community development, with government and not-for-profit organisations, has given me an in-depth understanding and ability to act on immediate and long-term agendas so that we can all prosper.
I love this community and will always put it first.
Craig Elliot (Labor)
This New South Wales election is expected to be very close, and the people of Tweed have the power to elect the next state government.
After 12 long years of Geoff Provest and his Liberal-Nationals government, Tweed residents are facing a cost-of-living crisis, a housing emergency, and a shortage of skilled public sector workers that sees our nurses, teachers, and paramedics leaving local Tweed jobs for better pay and conditions in Queensland.
This is happening because Geoff Provest and his boss Dominic Perrottet have forced an unfair wages cap onto these vital public sector workers for the last 12 years, meaning their take-home pay continues to go backwards. Continued on page 14...

BEWARE! Door knockers in your area!
Recently there has been an increase in some solar companies door knocking in our local community. These often commissioned-sellers give the renewable energy industry a bad reputation, at times employing unscrupulous selling tactics, and we for one won’t stand for it.
At SAE Group we believe knowledge is power, and we pride ourselves on delivering expert advice so that our customers can make an informed decision when it comes to choosing an energy solution.
We also understand from years of experience, that no two homes are the same, so finding the right solar solution for you and your home will not be the same as your neighbour.
If you’re considering solar, you’ll also know it’s a minefield out there, so to help you navigate your way to the right solution for you, we have to put together a few points that will help you feel confident you are making the right decision.
First things first; keep calm and get a second proposal. Some co reported they have been sold solar systems on the promise they have secured a discounted price, only to find out after the fact they have paid much more some cases consumers have reported paying thousands more for inferior products. Don’t be pushed in to signing on the spot. Investing in solar is an investment in your future and you need to be sure you are not paying through the nose for an inferior system that might not suit your energy needs.
Read between the lines; look for the gaps in the sleek sales pi salesperson sails off in to the sunset? Who can you contact should something go wrong with your system? Where is the company based? Who will install your system? Are they local? Are they accredited electrical contractors? It may feel like yo Inquisition, but remember, knowledge is power and you will quickly pick the genuine experts from the stammering salesmen.
At SAE Group we are your local experts in renewable energy solutions, servicing your area since 2010. We will be here should you ever need us, in years to come. Did you know we are also responsible for large scale design and installation of underground and overhead services among other things? Yep, we are busy futureproofing the energy needs of your community as well.
If you’re ready to take control of your energy future, and you’re looking for honest, trustworthy advice from your local energy contractor, call us today on 1300 18 20 50 for a chat, or visit www.saegroup.com.au for more information.
How? By protecting endangered species habitats, native forests and local tree canopies, reduce Australia’s waste production, action on climate change, stopping inappropriate highrise and sprawl, delivering new community infrastructure before more housing, stabilising Australia’s population size, transparent reporting of political donations and lobbying, banning political donations from big business and unions. We have more sustainable solutions in our policy platform to address Australia’s growing economic, environmental and social problems including the housing affordability crisis, overcrowded public transport, road congestion, high immigration-fuelled rapid population growth, political and property developer corruption, privatisation of key public assets, economic deindustrialisation, foreign ownership, problem gambling, an underfunded arts sector and ageism.
Importantly, Sustainable Australia Party is the only political movement to challenge the
reckless political agenda of rapid growth in both resource consumption (e.g. water, energy, forests, fish stocks, etc) and population size. Instead, we prioritise growth in our health and wellbeing over business-as-usual growth in consumption and population.
As an independent community movement, after you vote 1 for Sustainable Australia Party, we ask that you decide where to direct your own preferences.
Marc Selan (Legalise Cannabis Party)
My vision for the future is to end cannabis prohibition and treat hemp like a crop, not a drug. This would assist stability in rural communities, stimulating local economies and creating employment.
The unnecessary criminalisation of 30 to 40 per cent of cannabis consumers must end in order for us to progress as a society and a culture. The Legalise Cannabis Party would establish legislation to enable adults to possess, consume and cultivate cannabis, as well as introducing legislation for the establishment of licensed cannabis social clubs. We have a sustainable option to harvest hemp instead of continuing to cut down old-growth forests. And the possibility of using hemp fibre in the production of methanol to create a sustainable cheaper energy source for NSW residents. Over the past eight years I have worked in the European cannabis sector and have seen what works and what does not. My insight, expertise and perspectives are what is needed to inject new vitality into a region still reeling from natural disaster. Hemp houses and the skilled tradesmen necessary for this particular construction could provide a boost to the local construction and primary industry in the region Any rebuilding of community and longevity should be structured around a solid base of thriving small businesses. The Legalise Cannabis Party is hoping to create real job and business opportunities for Tweed.
Say goodbye to those ever increasing electricity bills!
If you’ve been thinking about making the switch to a solar powered lifestyle, now is the time. Get in touch today to speak with one of our expert energy consultants to discuss the best options for you and your home.

GREAT RANGE OF PRODUCTS
Top party pledges
By Jonathon Howard
IT’S THE final week of campaigning for the state election with residents set to cast their votes on Saturday, March 25, at polling sites across the Northern Rivers.
Our incumbents for Lismore, Janelle Saffin, and Tweed, Geoff Provest, have kindly compiled a list of respective pledges for the two electorates should their party secure leadership.
A Minns Labor government has pledged almost a dozen offers on the table for Murwillumbah alone.
First and foremost, a Minns government will keep Murwillumbah’s four public schools open and commence consultation with all school communities on infrastructure upgrades, including the continuation of Murwillumbah High’s current capital works.
A Minns government will provide additional policing resources for Murwillumbah Police Station, starting with $3.7 million for recruitment of additional officers, provision of other services and upgrades, and an implementation plan to make Murwillumbah Police Station 24/7.
Labor has promised to invest $30 million for a Build-to-Rent pilot program in Murwillumbah, Tweed Heads, Lismore and Ballina, delivering more long-term affordable rental housing for the Northern Rivers region.
Hub 2484 Murwillumbah would be provided with $40,000 for much-needed flood preparation and flood recovery projects.
Labor has promised $30,000 to RiverTracks, Murwillumbah towards running trade skills youth workshops designed to educate and empower youth at risk of disengaging from education.
A total of $10,000 would be provided to Murwillumbah Croquet Club Incorporated for repairing, prepping and painting the exterior of its historic clubhouse.
On the flipside, a re-elected Coalition Per-
rottet government has pledged 14 items that will benefit the Tweed Shire.
Among them is a pledge to have free parking at all regional public hospitals.
A total of $1 billion has been promised to upgrade local roads and rail infrastructure, and $1.2 billion for new and upgraded public schools.
Households will receive a $250 off household power bills under the Coalition, if consumers compare their energy deal with Service NSW.
A Perrottet government would allow firsthome buyers to choose between stamp duty and an annual land tax.
The Coalition will also provide an additional $23 million to Surf Life Saving NSW for new equipment and vehicles.
In a move designed to fix our waterways, the Coalition is offering $33 million for a long-term state-wide approach to dredging our waterways.
A re-elected Coalition government would provide small businesses with up to $1000 over two years towards licences and government fees and charges.
Under the Coalition, pharmacy regulations would be reformed to allow access to more health services without having to see a GP including enabling pharmacists to prescribe medication to treat urinary tract infections and to renew prescriptions for the contraceptive pill.

LISMORE
Alex Rubin (Nationals)
Our vision is to build a ‘Future Ready Region’. This requires planning to make us drought-proof and flood-safe.
This region is still in limbo, and our recovery has stalled. Having been intimately involved in the bushfire and flood responses, it became clear that nobody is fighting to protect us from the next disaster.
The challenge for this region is rekindling hope. We need to restore the confidence of our communities to rebuild and invest in the future. It is shameful that people remain without homes and we continue to deal with the problems of housing, crime and water security (flood protection), for our community’s future.
I want to raise the bar, because people have lost faith in our politicians; the social contract has been broken. I want to be a new generation of leader, not a retail politician who just follows ideological or party lines, who genuinely cares about making life better for our regional communities.
If nothing else, I aspire to earn back respect of the public. My personal creed is that ‘Leaders Eat Last’ and I promise to check my ego at the door and fight for what our whole community will benefit from. I care, I want real change, and my promise to you is Accountability, Honesty and Leadership.
I am in this for the long haul and people are sick of inaction. I want to defend this region from future disasters and rebuild our broken communi-
ties, which is going to take a decade of hard work that I am committed to see through. I believe that the people of this electorate deserve better.
Adam Guise (Greens)
The Greens are people-powered and, unlike the Nationals, Liberals and Labor, we don’t take dirty donations from corporations or fossil fuel companies.
To take back our democracy, we must ban corporate donations and remove the stranglehold of vested interests in politics. We can’t allow companies making multi-billion-dollar profits to buy influence.
Your vote is powerful and by electing a Greens member, we would send shockwaves through the establishment and kick-start the transformational change we so need. Electing just another puppet to the major parties will perpetuate more of the same: further climate inaction, more coal and gas, and a widening divide between rich and poor.
The Greens have the vision and the solutions to address the current crisis. Rather than handouts, let’s tax corporations and billionaires their fair share so that families aren’t shouldering the cost of living.
We need to invest in public and affordable housing so that everyone has a home. We need real action on climate change by ending coal and gas and rapidly transitioning to a renewable energy economy. We must fund our public sector to make health, education, transport and social services affordable and effective.
Native forests need to be protected so that we can end species extinction and meet our climate targets. We need to ensure our flood recovery
VISION FOR THE FUTURE – WHY ARE YOU THE BEST CANDIDATE?
is equitable and fair in order to get people out of harm’s way and keep our community together.
A fair and caring society which protects the environment is possible, it just requires the political will. Voting for more of the same won’t get the change we need. Make this election count. Vote Greens 1 and get us on track to a safe and liveable climate and a fair future for all.
Janelle Saffin (Labor)
I am seeking your support to be re-elected as your local member in the NSW Parliament, having served the past four years as we responded to drought, bushfires, COVID and floods.
Throughout these challenging times, I have been there every day — fighting, cajoling, advocating for our communities’ needs, and on the ground with you.
I have been there as well during the regular times, with all sectors, working to ensure farmers can farm, small business can thrive, teachers can teach, TAFE can prepare our workforce, and to ensure that essential services and infrastructure are there to support our communities I am asking for your precious vote to continue to do the job of rebuilding, and reshaping the better future we need. My strong track record of advocacy and achievement speaks to how I shall work for all, if re-elected. Working together, we can make it happen.
I have fought tooth and nail to have governments deliver what our communities need, taking our communities’ voices up to the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition directly, working co-operatively with local
MPs and in Sydney across political parties to ensure that communities in the Lismore electorate and the Northern Rivers region are heard, justly treated and not forgotten.
I have delivered the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) and the NSW Reconstruction Authority, together with the $700 million Resilient Homes Program (federal/ state) and $100 million Resilient Land Program (state).
The NRRC is neither perfect nor faultless but it is ours in this region to deal with; better than decisions being made for us in Sydney.
I have also secured many iron-clad commitments for our electorate.
2023 is the year we rebuild better to be future-ready and ramp up with agreed regional economic and environment plans. Unity in these areas is strength and I will keep working to foster this.
With your support, I will let nothing stand in the way of securing our better future.
Matthew Bertalli (Shooters, Fishers and Farmers)
My vision for the future is for regional NSW to regain its former glory. I wish to increase the standard healthcare of regional areas to that of the cities. I would like to push for a standard that will be beyond a single term in office.
I wish to make it possible that a baby can be born safely in every hospital in NSW. This is a long-term goal of mine and would take years of work, but I believe that it is possible. I wish to re-establish a functioning railway network throughout region-
al NSW, connecting towns to each other and to the city to help increase production and investment in these regional areas. With a functioning and extensive railway system, there can be a move away from transport of goods via road to rail.
This will help to limit the amount of heavy traffic on our roads. This also would help to connect the more vulnerable members of regional NSW, such as the elderly, with the ability to travel in a safe and inexpensive manner.
I wish to create greater urgency around the risk to the Australian environment by climate change and invasive species. A healthy environment means a healthy agricultural sector, which is the backbone of regional NSW. We see, when the land is healthy, that the people who live on it are also healthy.
I want to help this great state make the transition away from the usage of fossil fuel for energy production towards renewable sources of power. Why vote for me? Vote for me if you are sick of regional areas not being paid attention to by the major parties. I will fight every step of the way to ensure the future of regional NSW and I will always do what I believe is best for the people of regional communities.

Party politicians are forced to conspire to hide the prior crimes of their parties; they can not fix scandals like these at all. I have run for Tweed Shire Council three times to expose these scandals and two federal reviews sent my and my co-complainants’ submissions to all departments including the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. From the PM down, politicians cannot admit their parties were wrong. Premier Baird’s counsel sent my complaints to NSW ICAC in 2014; both the departments of PM and Cabinet and the NSW Premier’s Department have deceived all Prime Ministers and Premiers that have followed.
Vanessa Rosayro (Animal Justice Party)
All the candidates in this election are exceptional people. Our electorate is full of passionate and committed people who genuinely want to achieve meaningful change and end the adversarial nature of politics. I am humbled and proud to represent Lismore.
Animals, people and the planet — we are connected. The voice missing from our political space is that of animals, and I will represent them, as I do the people of the Lismore electorate.
Humane respect for animals, ensuring habitat protection for endangered native species and access to health care through Veticare will be my top priorities.
This is because habitat protection through stopping land clearing and native forest logging, no new gas and coal mines, and setting a 100 per cent
renewable energy target by 2030 will not only support vulnerable animals species but also enable meaningful steps towards addressing the climate emergency.
Animals play a vital role in social and emotional wellbeing. Protecting renters’ rights to have pets, allowing pets on public transport and Veticarelike Medicare for animals will mean that animals have access to health care. As a Lismore resident, safe and affordable housing, homelessness and community restoration will always be a priority for me. I am a social worker employed in flood recovery and I have been with my community through this disaster. We deserve better, and we can do better.
With no ties to major parties or corporations, I can act independently to represent my community to achieve what we need to ensure that we thrive as a community. The people and animals in Lismore have been placed in crisis, and it is time we said enough, it is time for change.
Ross Honniball (Sustainable Australia Party)
I started life as a draftsman and moved on to work for the public service (DVA) and then 16 years in the retail industry. For the last eight years I’ve been enjoying work in the disability care industry because I enjoy the feeling of helping people.
I am running for Sustainable Australia Party to decorrupt politics in the NSW Parliament and implement sustainable solutions for our future. Sustainable Australia Party is an independent community movement with a science and evidence-based policy platform.
VISION FOR THE FUTURE – WHY ARE YOU THE BEST CANDIDATE?
We are fighting to protect our environment, stop overdevelopment and stop corruption. This includes protecting endangered species habitats, native forests and local tree canopies; reducing Australia’s waste production; acting on climate change; stopping inappropriate high-rise and sprawl; delivering new community infrastructure before more housing; stabilising Australia’s population size; transparent reporting of political donations and lobbying; and banning political donations from big business and unions.
In line with our science and evidence-based approach to policy, Sustainable Australia Party is #RedefiningGrowth to mean better, not bigger. Importantly, Sustainable Australia Party is the only political movement to challenge the reckless political agenda of rapid growth in both resource consumption (e.g. water, energy, forests, fish stocks, etc) and population size.
Instead, we prioritise growth in our health and wellbeing over business-as-usual growth in consumption and population.
Finally, as an independent community movement, after you Vote 1 for Sustainable Australia Party, we ask that you decide where to direct your own preferences.
Allen Crosthwaite (Independent)
I’m an engineer by trade and passionate about regional rail and the need for smart transport in the regions now and into our sustainable future.
I grew up in Townsville among regional communities’ sugar fields, and
farming families and towns — I am from the region and regions are in my blood.
After attending Gatton Agricultural School, I graduated from James Cook University in 1976, attending when Eddie Mabo was part of our university community. I am honest, fair and listen.
I am a volunteer at Tenterfield Train Museum and have been for 12 years. I am semi-retired and active in my community, and a passionate dog lover. I am standing for election in the seat of Lismore because communities have been ignored too long and I am here for the local people so their
voices are heard.
We need rail and securing rail corridors for public purpose, to keep jobs, create jobs, link business with current tourism, and for locals to access health and education services. We need smart solutions for transport for connector rail into the Tweed Valley, and to pause and assess the Casino, Lismore and Murwillumbah (CLM) line.
I support the Great Northern Rail and CLM railway line to be reassessed for public purpose and genuine public value.
BATTLE OF THE BANNERS
THE BATTLE of the banners has commenced across the Tweed Shire with reports that Greens candidate for Lismore Adam Guise, who is the latest victim of alleged signage theft. Each election year political signage, which is a popular form of advertising, is a great way to remind residents of their local candidates. They are also the centre of a highly-charged political landscape, with some residents, including Joanna Gardner of Uki, pointing out the theft and “undemocratic removal” of signs on Kyogle Road recently.
Ms Gardner’s comments follow the removal of several signs featuring Mr Guise not once, but at least twice on Kyogle Road, north of Uki to Murwillumbah and other roads in the Uki area.
“It is a property owner’s democratic right to display and promote who they support in the upcoming state
election,” Ms Gardner wrote to The Weekly.
Ms Gardner questioned the motivation of someone to remove this signage asking is it animosity or fear that drives this?
“I would suggest that the culprits actually educate themselves on the Greens policies: greens.org.au/nsw/ policyplatform2023,” she said.

Mayor outraged over development planning
By Jo Kennett
MAYOR CHRIS Cherry and Councillor Nola
Firth say they are not happy that the state government has ignored Council recommendations regarding future development in the shire.
The Tweed Shire Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) 2018 to 2022 was developed with no public input in 2017, shrouded in secrecy, and included a health precinct surrounding a new hospital well before the new hospital was approved.
At the time the hospital was approved, Member for Tweed Geoff Provest assured local residents that there would be no expansion into the surrounding State Significant Farmland.
The Tweed REDS-2023 update was released on March 2, but a Council submission regarding the Tweed Valley Hospital (TVH) “precinct” proposal has been ignored.
Council asked the state Health Infrastructure department to add, “that it does not include any other lands adjacent to or adjoining to the hospital”.
The Tweed REDS — 2023 Update states that the REDS strategy is to “Implement a precinct strategy for the current TVH site — undertake strategic planning to position expansion of the current TVH site, (‘maximising the investment in TVH’), and to “reflect the opportunity to develop a precinct strategy for the current TVH site.”
“To release the state government’s Regional Economic Development strategy for Tweed and leave in there reference to expansion of the new Tweed Valley Hospital site is a slap in the face of Council and of the whole community,” Mayor Cherry said.
“We expressly asked them to honour our community’s desire to protect the State Significant Farmland of the Cudgen Plateau by including it being expressly stated that any precinct strategy for the hospital would be on the hospital site and the Kingscliff TAFE site only and not on lands adjacent.
“It is extremely disappointing when we are working so hard to ensure that we have food bowl resources in our shire into the future.
“It makes you worry about what is planned for that area.”
A Brisbane developer bought land next to the hospital in 2019 with plans for a large “Cudgen Connections” development.
Councillor Nola Firth said there were other aspects of the REDS plan she wasn’t happy with.
“As councillors we put significant time into giving feedback to the state authorities regarding the Tweed Regional Development Strategy — 2023 Update,” she said.
“Our feedback regarding the need for the addition in the document of the importance of the circular economy to support the wise use of resources and reduction of waste has been included.
“However, there are some very important points we raised which have not been addressed.”
Cr Firth said councillors specifically asked for the removal of forestry as an industry in the document.
“Forestry is not an industry here at present,” she said.
“Including specific references to forestry and wood products invites concerns about private native forestry.
“This is especially the case in the light of the lack of protection for koalas in our hinterland and the effort (unsuccessful so far) by the government last year to remove control of private forestry from Council’s powers.
“We also specifically asked for inclusion of a statement that development of the hospital precinct, which is referred to frequently in the document, does not include any State Significant Farmland adjacent to the new hospital. This statement has not been included.”
Cr Firth said our “precious” State Significant Farmland must be protected, “especially in the light of the emphasis given in the document to the importance of agriculture in the region.”
“The issue is of great concern to many in our community,” Cr Firth said.
“We have been given assurance that the state shares our concern regarding such land. It is clear that our community needs this commitment to be upheld.”

Longtime paramedic retires
By Jonathon Howard
ONE OF the Tweed Shire’s longest serving intensive care paramedics, Grant Prendergast, has announced his official retirement this week following a career spanning more than four decades.
Working in the Tweed Valley since the early 1990s, Grant has been a first responder to hundreds, if not thousands, of accident scenes and calls for assistance. His friendly approach and calm demeanour have served the Tweed well for more than three decades working up to officer in charge of Murwillumbah station and making him an invaluable asset to the community.
You could say Grant has seen and done it all, having started his career as a probationary ambulance officer in Dubbo during September 1980.
He was later posted to Coonabarabran from 1981 to 1983, Moree from 1983 to 1984, Bathurst from 1984 to 1986, and Dubbo until 1993 before his arrival in Murwillumbah.
Always eager to gain more skills, Grant completed his Intensive Care Paramedic
A LOCAL HERO: Grant Prendergast has spent the past 40 years committed to his role as a paramedic, now he's ready for a
course in 2008.
“It’s been a challenging time over the past few years with an increasing workload and I felt it was the right time to retire,” he said.
Grant said he’s seen his industry change dramatically over the years with the advent of advanced life support and high-level interventions in the field.
“If we get a stroke, for example, we can treat it on scene immediately and put them on a health pathway,” he said.
Grant said he wanted to thank all emergency services including police, VRA, SES, Fire and Rescue, Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter crews, and his paramedic team.
“I need to give a special thank you to my wife Ann, who is a longtime emergency nurse and understands the challenges of being a paramedic,” he said.
Grant said the role of a paramedic is
Firefighters keeping busy
LOCAL EMERGENCY service workers have been kept busy with a number of incidents recently, including a car fire at Chinderah on Friday, March 17.
Firefighters were called in to reports of a car fire on Friday morning at a cul-de-sac on the southern end of Chinderah Bay Drive.
seeing people at their most vulnerable.
“We see people at their most vulnerable and I enjoyed being able to help in some way to get them through their most difficult times,” he said.
“I’ll miss the interaction with the staff and the community, and the opportunity to service the community.”
Grant and his wife Ann are planning to return to Kenya in Africa where they travel regularly to undertake medical clinics in remote communities.
“We must recognise how privileged we are in Australia, and in some small way this is our chance to give back,” he said.
“We also have travel plans to go back to Europe and the US and see the sights.
“Beyond that, we’re gearing up for a caravan tour around Australia.
“My advice to others is embrace change and take yourself out of your comfort zone by taking on new challenges.”
They used breathing apparatus while they extinguished the fire, and then contained the runoff from fire from entering the Tweed River and impacting the environment and waterways.
Fire and Rescue Kingscliff were later called to a motor vehicle accident (MVA) on Chinderah Bay Drive near Action Sands, south of Tweed Shores Caravan Park.
An area of oil was cleaned up using sphag sorb absorbent cleaning material.
On Saturday, March 18, Fire and Rescue Kingscliff visited Chinderah Tourist Village for Home Fire Safety Visits and installed 15 new smoke alarms.
The crew have been working their way through Chinderah residential parks in the wake of the floods to help keep local residents safe.
On Sunday, March 19, Fire and Rescue Kingscliff were called out to a vehicle leaking gas at a local service station. They used a line of hose to disperse the gas with water until firefighters could turn off the cut-off switch to the gas. Cudgen Rural Fire Brigade also attended the incident. In between callouts, the Kingscliff crew applied new Bundjalung Nation decals to their truck.

Fast And Furious Murbah
By Jonathon Howard
THE FIRST Motorkhana
for 2023 presented by the Murwillumbah Sporting Car Club, sponsored by Southern Cross Credit Union and IGA Tweed Valley, was a massive hit with local drivers on Sunday, March 19.
Murwillumbah Showgrounds once again provided an outstanding short course with plenty of fast and furious drivers eager to test their skills.
Local hotshot Jude Livermore has once again topped the junior class in his trusty Toyota Starlet setting a blistering time at just under one minute.
In second place, in the junior category, was the skillful local driver Phoebe Sykes in a loaned WRX.
Phoebe continues to give other drivers a run for their money, including many of the seniors, coming in only a frac -
tion of a second behind Jude.
In third place, by a whisker, was Zane Hall in the club Suburu Impreza displaying some outstanding skills behind the wheel.
In the adult class, there were some of the fastest laps set in the history of the Motorkhana, including by local legend and IGA owner Brett Bugg who set a blistering pace in his WRX of under a minute.
In second place for the adults was Luke Behan in another WRX setting a great time and only a fraction behind Brett.
In third place, for the adults, was Phoebe Sykes who took on the adult class and again showed some great skill and control in a member’s WRX.
The next event is scheduled for late April, check The Weekly for updates.

Lot of love at Surf for Sanity
THE SURF for Sanity single fin tag team surf contest to highlight mental health awareness on Saturday, March 18, at Cabarita Beach was a huge hit with hundreds of people enjoying the surfing, music and food.
The event was put together by an amazing team of locals led by founder Steve Ashburn, Janine Pollard and AJ Pitts.
The local ladies in team Beaumont Tiles took out the Salty Girls Surf School Women’s final.
Timmy Chalmers’ 9.67 (out of ten) wave saw his team, Cabarita Beach Bowls and Sports Club, take the men’s final win.
“I was just in the right places at the right time, super lucky at my home break and I just felt everything aligned
and it just worked out,” Timmy said.
“It was such a fun day. I was just talking to a mate who doesn’t surf and he said this is the best day of the Caba calendar; that was really cool to hear.

Pottsville drainage concerns
By Jo Kennett
THERE ARE concerns among some Pottsville residents that a lack of maintenance of local drains and repair of the sea wall could lead to further flooding, after a number of houses flooded last year.
Peter Howell lives in Phillip Street near the boat ramp and ran a large plumbing company for 41 years. He thinks if the drains were cleaned and the water could get away more quickly, there would have been less flooding last year in the big February flood.
“The problem is a lack of maintenance on the drains. They have fixed one or two but mangroves have grown up and blocked the drains leading into the creek,” Peter said.
“I live 300 metres from the mouth of the creek and we had one foot of water in our house and three houses here are still uninhabitable.
“Dozens of houses in Pottsville flooded that have never flooded before.
“The creek mouth was blocked up. It should have been dredged.”
At one drain into the creek on Overall Drive Peter showed The Weekly where he said all the mangroves “effectively damned this entire section.”
“They are only regrowth; they aren’t original trees and they just have to be removed and the weeds on the other side need to be cleaned out,” he said.
“There is a koala passage under Coronation Drive (just east of the ambulance station) and that drain has been full of rubbish since February last year and that contributed greatly to the fact Coronation Drive flooded.”
“Before it went over Overall Drive it went backwards up the canals and around and down Coronation Drive. There was so much water it couldn’t handle the flow.”
Richard Schnell lives in Environmental Drive and said at Edwards Avenue and the end of Buckingham Court water coming from the west can’t get away.
“The water can’t get out because the drains from the canal into the creek are blocked up and all the flooding came from the west (not the creek) because of that,” he said.
“Up past Mackenzie Avenue there is a drain that is totally blocked up.
“All the water that flooded Black Rocks Sports Field got flooded with water from the west because it couldn’t get away.”
In 2020, members of the Pottsville Community Association spent weeks collecting thou-
sands of signatures in a petition to the state government to fund half the sea wall repairs after Tweed Shire Council voted to fund half, however the work has yet to be done.
“Three of us have been agitating in the community association that the bar needed to be cleaned out and the rock wall filled, and if they didn’t do it the water level would probably be five feet higher than it was before,” Richard said.
“Bruce Brown, myself and Les Hardy spent over a month getting signatures to do the repairs and we got the money from the state government (Council first agreed to fund half).”
Bruce said in the last few years the creek has gone from being six or seven feet deep to three to four feet deep.
Council’s Manager of Roads and Stormwater Danny Rose said the Mooball Creek Training Walls Repair Project “was one of many that had to be deferred whilst Council focussed on recovery after the February to March 2022 flood event.”
“The project is currently in the detailed design stage and will soon go to tender, with construction to repair the wall expected in late 2023,” he said.
“It should be noted that the repair of the training walls will have little to no impact on the severity or scale of flooding across the Mooball Creek catchment.
“Reports of blocked drains can be made to Council via our Report a Problem service, and these will continue to be investigated and actioned, where necessary.”
Meet the candidates
By Jo Kennett
BOGANGAR residents had a chance to put questions to NSW election candidates for the seat of Tweed at a meeting on Monday night, March 20, at Cabarita Beach Bowls and Sports Club.
National Party Member for Tweed Geoff Provest joined Labor candidate Craig Elliot, the Animal Justice Party’s Susie Hearder and Green’s candidate Ciara Denham to respond to questions put to them by the community prior to the event.
Sharon Leslie said that all four candidates agreed there would be free parking at the new hospital.
Members of the Cabarita Beach Bogangar Residents Association (CBBRA) Flood Mitigation Group asked the candidates if, as the local member, they would commit to supporting CBBRA “to get an appropriate flood mitigation study and then get any viable recommended solutions approved and funded.”
Andy Williams was one of the residents who attended the meeting and has been part of the team pushing to get flood mitigation seriously looked at after the devastation in Bogangar/ Cabarita Beach last year, which they say was caused by drainage problems.
“All candidates are highly supportive of a flood mitigation study for Bogangar,” he said.
Another resident, who didn’t want to be named, said the candidates were “well prepared.”
“Geoff’s experience was obvious and is a huge advantage over newcomers,” she said.
“Ciara from the Greens was very impressive with her detailed and well considered answers to prepared questions.
“Susie showed her passion and local knowledge but inexperience.
“Craig’s speeches showed his background in the forces and his strength of his conviction that Provest has had long enough to have minimised the problems in the Tweed but has failed.
“There wasn’t thunderous applause for any of them from the disappointingly small but polite crowd.”

HI TO our market community and all the food-lovers out there!
This month has also been a busy one as we have had three new stalls join us for trials.
First, Mariana J, which is a range of organic macadamia body oil, perfumes and candles in a range of scents made with organic (where possible) essential oils and Australian jojoba.
Second, we have had Elissa at the Sweet Life Kitchen . Elissa has a delicious range of gluten free cakes and mini-cakes on her stall – they look absolutely divine!
Last, but not least, we also have Alfredo from Spanish Churros now joining us. Alfredo makes authentic Spanish churros, which sounds amazing. Please join me in welcoming these new stalls to our market and pop by to see what they have to offer.
Part way through March we had a community stall joining us. At this stall was the family and friends of a local 16-year-old boy, Noah who at the end of last year was diagnosed with a brain tumour that required surgery.
The surgery has left him in the wheelchair as he developed a condition which affects his mobility and speech and has left him requiring constant care.
Not only are Noah’s family and friends raising awareness for the
YOUR LOCAL FOOD BOWL
condition, but they are also trying to raise funds for his ongoing treatment.
We have had so much interest from our wonderful local community about raising money for Noah that we are now holding a raffle with all of the donated prizes we have received.
This raffle will likely happen over the Easter school holidays so watch this space (and the weekly newsletter) for an update on dates.
I hope you all enjoy this update and look forward to seeing you every Wednesday at the market!

What’s in season, tasty and interesting at the market this month?
In very exciting news, Tallogum Berries has now been approved to sell blackberries at the market. Tallogum have already had their first batch of juicy, sweet and tangy blackberries for us to try out this week, so do stop by and have a try. Blackberries are absolutely packed with vitamin C – they are great as a healthy snack, in a fruit salad, or you could be more adventurous as they are a favourite for desserts, making jam, drinks and even in sorbets. Sounds delicious!
Over at Mad Mountain they have Lemon Ginger Jam now in stock!
Lyn and Tim tell me that this jam is sweet, fragrant and tangy – sounds like it would be perfect on a slice of toasted bread from Gina at Crabbes Creek Woodfired.
The jam is made with Mad Mountain’s homegrown organic lemons and ginger and most importantly they use no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives - so this jam is simply pure goodness.
Andy at Costanzo Apples was very excited to let me know that
they have new season Packham pears in and they look and taste delicious. Packham pears are an excellent source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. They also contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamin K and copper. Packham pears have a firm, sweet and juicy white flesh so they are great for pies, eaten fresh or when making jam.
Summit Organics has also let me know that they have dahlias at the moment. Tania tells me that the dahlia season is now nearing its end (likely early April), so here is your chance to soak up all of these beautiful flowers while they are here. Let’s make the most of it!
Rosella fruit is also in season at Sylva Lining Organics. Rosella fruit is high in vitamin C, so great for our immunity. If you haven’t tried rosellas before, they have a pleasant tart-sweet flavour that is versatile as it goes well in salads, jellies, red sauces, jams, cordials, syrups, fruit teas and wine. Pop over to see Sylva for your bag, while the season lasts.
Noella at Bright’s Natural Bees Wax has also been telling me all about one of their products, the ‘Seven Steps Skin Moisturiser’. Their moisturiser is made from beeswax, jojoba and essential oils basil, bergamot, clary sage, geranium, orange, rose and rosemary. Noella tells me that not only does
their moisturiser help skin problems, but it also helps with clarity and focus.
When and where is the market?
See you at the Murwillumbah Farmers’ Market, at the Murwillumbah Showground (via gate 5) from 7am to 11am every Wednesday – come rain or shine! There will be a different local musician at the market every week – so come along, gather with friends and family and get stocked up on your local and fresh weekly produce!
If you would like more information – follow us on Instagram or Facebook, subscribe to our weekly newsletter or contact the market manager, Claire Strodder by email (manager@murwillumbahfarmersmarket.com.au) or phone (0415 328 672).

Big win for Zahli Kelly at Central Coast Pro
By Jo Kennett
CASUARINA SURFER Zahli Kelly has just given her hopes of making it back to the Challenger Series a huge boost after a rocky twelve months by taking out the Qualifying Series 3,000 Vissla & Sisstrevolution Central Coast Pro, on Saturday, March 18.
Kelly was the form surfer of the event, gaining momentum as she progressed.
She scored one of the highest totals in the second Round of 32, and easily won her Round of 16 heat.
The Cabarita Boardriders surfer went next level in the quarter finals, scoring the highest total of 14.27 over Ellie Harrison.
Kelly came up against Japanese
surfer Mirai Ikeda in the semi-finals, with Ikeda taking an early lead before Kelly went on a vertical attack on her backhand to score a 5.23 and take the lead.
Kelly managed a back up on one of the small, onshore, waves with six aggressive frontside hits.
Ikeda was sitting on 8.33 when Kelly sealed the deal with one big turn which scored her a 5.93 and a total of 11.16.
Kelly said she was “over” being unable to get past the quarter finals recently and was stoked to make the finals. .
In the finals Kelly came up against Lennox Head’s Nyxie Ryan who was coming off the back of two big wins and looking good to qualify for the Challenger Series.
Ryan was probably the favourite going in but Kelly got the first wave, did two big vertical hits and scored a 7. She backed up with a 5.67.
She was well in front on 12.67 when Ryan scored a 5.83 for a total of 9.83, but Kelly sat with priority for the final three minutes with nothing of substance coming and easily took the win.
“I’m really happy to finally get a win. It’s been nearly four years,” Kelly said afterwards.
“It will be even better if I can back
it up and get back on the Challenger Series.”
In 2019 Kelly missed out on joining the Dream Tour, the WCT, by one heat and then COVID happened. She surfed in the Challenger Series last year without the results she was looking for, which also saw her miss the first three Qualifying Series events of the year, putting her behind the eight ball to get back on the Challenger Series this year.

Indian classical dance
By Madeleline Murray
A TROUPE of four classical Indian dancers will perform a drama called Parijatham in Murwillumbah on April 2.
Parijatham is a timeless, iconic tale of love, lust and devotion in the classical Indian dance style Kuchipudi.
This ancient dance tradition is famous for its lilting music, flowing movements, and vibrant stage presentation.
The visually stunning dance drama performed by Canberra’s Sadhanalaya School of Arts showcases traditional elements of the Kuchipudi dance repertoire and is set to beautiful, haunting Carnatic classical South Indian music.
Parijatham tells the delightful and at times comical story of conflict created between two of Lord Krishna’s consorts, Queen Rukmini and Queen Satyabhama.
The problems begin after Sage Narada asks
Lord Krishna to give a divine parijatham flower to his favourite consort, Rukmini.
“Lord Krishna in Hindu mythology is known for his beautiful flute playing and is a bit of a ladies’ man, often found among the milkmaids,” said Suhasini Sumithra, who plays Queen Rukmini.
“We’re very excited to be bringing the show to the beautiful Northern Rivers, and to share this art form with people who may not know it,” Suhasini told The Weekly.
Parijatham is one of 15 dance dramas choreographed by the late Dr Vempati Chinnastyam who was recognised globally for his lifetime contributions to Kuchipudi.
This performance has been directed by his niece, Ms Vanaja Dasika, who lives in Canberra.
Parijatham is on from 4:30pm at the Pure Bhakti Yoga Centre, 1 Banner St, Murwillumbah. For more info, contact Suhasini on 0425 101 120.
Australasian QS going into the Central Coast Pro, and this win saw her shoot up to sixth place, with only the top four surfers progressing to the Challenger Series. She needs a good result at the Burton Automotive Pro & Speaking in Colour Pro in Newcastle this week, the last stop of the Aussie QS series, to qualify for the Challenger Series which kicks off in May.
Kingscliff’s Micah Margieson and Cabarita’s Kyan Falvey are also com-
peting this week at Newcastle, with Margieson absolutely blasting his way through Round 1.
Kyan, with PBC Sport Excellence surf coach and dad Ben in his corner, came out firing in his heat, getting two decent scores to make his way through to Round two as well (at the time of going to print).
Props also to Caba surfer Brittani Nicholl who did an excellent job on commentary as always.
Cudgen into cricket final
By Jo Kennett
CUDGEN IS into the finals of the LJ Hooker Two Day League against Goonellabah after taking down Pottsville last weekend, with Tweed Banora Colts also bowing out.
Cudgen Captain Alec Williams said they lost the toss and Pottsville batted.
“We took a few early wickets and had them for 4/50,” Alec said.
“(Pottsville’s) Kai Allison scored 55 and batted well all day; he and Nathan Wilson put on about 70 runs for the fifth wicket and then James Julius broke the partnership.
Julius was in top form, taking 5/45 off 24 overs.
“Pat Rosser took 3/22 and bowled out. We bowled them out for 186 which we thought was well below a competitive score,” he said.
“We batted that night and ended up 0/40 off six overs. We thought we were in a pretty dominant position but we lost a few early wickets the next day.
“Nathan Pryke took three wickets, he took my off pole out of the ground which was fun! “He’s only 16 and he was a standout.”
Englishman Cory Chantrill scored 75 “batted beautifully”, Alec said..
“Pat Rosser came in and smashed them everywhere and got 45 off 20 balls but when he got out we still needed ten runs.
Then Cudgen lost three wickets for seven runs with an on-fire Kagisho Pedi bowling.
“Then we needed three to win with one in hand and James Julius came out to bat which
is not a good thing for us because he is hopeless with a bat.
“He had two balls to face from Pedi, he played and missed both and was lucky not to get bowled. As batsmen go he’s a great bowler. Up the other end Jake Weir hit the winning runs with a boundary.”
Alec said both teams bowled real well, “a lot better than they batted.”
“It should be a good game at Oakes Oval against Goonellabah,” Alec said.
“I think if we play our best we will win. It’s our ninth straight grand final and only the second one away and we are going for six straight wins so we are pretty confident but we still have to do the job.”
In the other semi the Colts at 10/91 went down to minor premiers Goonellabah (10/334).
“We were completely outplayed,” Tweed Banora captain coach Adam Rogers said.
Tom Byrnes did a great job for the Colts taking 5/60 but Tweed Banora Colts were all out for 91 on the final day.
“Catching let us down; I think we dropped five catches but the heat was a huge factor after fielding for 96 overs on Saturday in Lismore’s 36 degree heat,” Adam said.
“We loved the season. Tom Byrnes was the stand out player of the competition and it was a break out year for Fletcher Koppel with the bat and outstanding fielding and Lewis Koppel who took 22 wickets.”
Well done to Potty and the Colts on another great year.

Join the Overture
By Madeleine Murray
MURWILLUMBAH FESTIVAL of Performing
Arts turns 100 this year, as featured in The Weekly, and the music section has come up with a whole new approach.
Performing and developing your skills is not just about winning, so for the first time, every musical performance will be recognised and rewarded in a program for schools called Overture.
The three categories of speech and drama, music, and dance are open to all schools and competitors from across the Tweed Valley and beyond.
To win the festival has always been a young performer’s dream. Past winners include Jeremy Secombe, who went on to play The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in West End, London, or David Hibbard who is an internationally acclaimed opera bass singer.
Overture will provide an opportunity for school instrumental ensembles and choral ensembles to celebrate their young musicians and music teachers by encouraging musical excellence through performance.
The emphasis is on improving the quality of ensembles, promoting the highest possible
standard of performance, striving for excellence and encouraging participation.
There are no place getters in this program. Schools are awarded the appropriate certificate for the performance chosen, according to the performance descriptor statements.
“You can enter in a section based on your level of experience,” music co-convenor Vikki Armour told The Weekly.
“You are awarded a certificate based on the quality of your performance. That way, every single person walks away with a positive experience, as well as first-class adjudication comments and suggestions.
“Adjudication is not based on a comparison with other ensembles performing in Overture events or a group’s past achievements or future potential.”
This exciting new initiative will encourage young performers, and give them a tangible reward for their hard work and dedication. Overture is bound to lead to a lot of smiling faces.
The full traditional Eisteddfod Competition Program will go ahead as usual.
Music entries close on Friday, April 14. Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts music enquiries please phone Heather Martin on: 0418 647 355 or email mfpa.music@gmail.com.
Curse of the Scottish Play
By Rosemary Hume and Editor
MEMBERS of the Murwillumbah Theatre Company believe the curse of ‘The Scottish Play’ has struck again after one its stage actors, David Thomas, received a nasty bite from a python last week.
Mr Thomas plays Banquo and Seward in the company’s current production of Macbeth and considers himself lucky to only have received bite marks and bruising from the disturbed python in his kitchen.
The incident caused him to miss the performance for high schools last Friday morning, leaving the assistant director to read in the role.
But the cast are asking is the curse surrounding the Bard’s play still alive?
Shakespeare’s Macbeth is surrounded by superstition and fear of the ‘curse’ — which says uttering the play’s name aloud in a theatre causes bad luck.
But where did this superstition come from?
According to folklore, Macbeth was cursed from the very beginning.
Shakespeare was said to have researched the weird sisters (witches) in depth; their chants, and ingredients of fenny snake, eye of newt and toe of frog, which are supposedly real spells. This led to coven of witches objecting to Shakespeare using their real incantations, so they put a curse on the play.
Legend has it the play’s first performance (around 1606) was riddled with disaster.
The actor playing Lady Macbeth died suddenly, so Shakespeare himself had to take on the part.
Other rumoured mishaps include real daggers being used in place of stage props for the murder of King Duncan (resulting in the actor’s death).
The play hasn’t had much luck since.
The famous Astor Place Riot in New York in 1849, caused by rivalry between American actor Edwin Forrest and English actor William Charles Macready, resulted in at least 20 deaths and over 100 injuries.
Both Forrest and Macready were playing Macbeth in opposing productions at the time. Other productions have been plagued with accidents, including actors falling off the stage, mysterious deaths, and even narrow misses by falling stage weights, as happened to Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic in 1937.
The actors are pleading with the audiences not to worry.
“Come and see Macbeth! This is Australia — she’ll be right mate!” they said.
The final weekend of performances is on Friday, March 31, at 7.30pm, Saturday, April 1, at 7.30pm and Sunday, April 2, at 2pm.

David's python bite: "We have scorched the snake, not killed it. She'll remain close and be herself whilst our poor malice remains in danger of her former tooth," a quote from the play Macbeth by Shakespeare
THE NORTHERN Rivers NSW is a distinctively diverse region. Personality of place is paramount, naturally nurturing people who resonate with the landscape and this community’s charm. Our paradisical pockets of bucolic rolling hills, ancient forests, crystal clear creeks, abundant beaches and, of course, our magical mountain, Wollumbin, all weave a celestial spell. We have the highest concentration of creative artists in the entire country, a telling fact. Not only do we breed and beckon resident artists, but the amazing performers who visit inevitably become indelibly linked. It’s hard to live and work in this incredible caldera and remain unchanged. Lovely Lior, performing tonight (23rd) with his talent discovery, Domini Forster, have both visited the area multiple times for festivals. Wonderful William Crighton, sharing the stage next Friday night (31st) with luminous Liz Stringer, donated his album launch concert tickets to our flood relief last year. Tim Freedman is another welcome guest, flicking a switch and connecting with regional Australia with his new work and tour, sharing his Black Stump project far and wide.
We know that hard working artists visit regional areas, and tour the heartland of our great nation - cities and towns, villages, and communities countrywide. When they’re here, their connection to us is always special. My Dad taught me the imperative of paying it forward, that a business strives to support community enterprises and events whenever possible – as a gathering place, to advocate, encourage and fundraise – anything that contributes to this sacred land, its history and elders, our emerging leaders, creative artists and community groups. In flood, fire, and drought The Regent has been here since 1947, standing tall for over 75 years as the iconic centre of arts culture, connecting us in crisis, and in the shared glory of memorable music or amazing film. Our lovingly-attentive audiences, caring community and generous visiting artists, keep the beat of the pulsing heart of our small, resilient, and artistic society. I’m honoured to be part of it, remaining committed to the people of this place. I appreciate it works both ways – a circular, creative economy of connection and compassion.
Stringer and Crighton
The Regent Spotlight
LIZ STRINGER and William Crighton combine forces on Friday, March 31, with a co-headline performance.
Extraordinary as individual artists, this double bill is inspired by both Stringer and Crighton’s commitment to the communities in which they perform.
Crighton grew up in small towns around the NSW Riverina district in Wiradjuri country. He works passionately against environmental destruction on the ground and through his music.
His latest album Water and Dust, which he debuted, stripped back, as a flood relief concert at The Regent last year, winning Best Blues & Roots Release at the 2022 ARIA awards, and he was regaled as ‘a classic Australian storyteller burning with ragged intensity’ by the critics. Fusing traditional music and experimentation, his songs explore vivid stories with colourful themes, from tales of murder and suicide to love and euphoric conversations with ants.
Multi-award winner Stringer is one of Australia’s most admired songwriters and instrumentalists. Her notoriously powerful performances and rich story-based songs, have earned her a unique place in the canon of contemporary Australian music.
After winning AIR’s Best Blues and Roots album in 2022, Melbourne’s ‘best kept secret’ was propelled to another level, touring with Midnight Oil for 18 months and named Port Fairy Folk Festival’s 2023 artist of the year.
This unique double bill features both artists perform solo, and together with a full band. A night of blues and roots and rhythms, this stunning event is not to be missed.

MADE RUSTIC Designs
are experts in creating customised landscapes that are driven by their client’s vision.
The business owner, Ben Clark, has more than two decades of experience and is passionate about taking his client’s vision and translating that into stunning garden designs.
“Put simply, we love to create spaces that our clients love to come home to,” he said.
“This may include a garden redesign, changing the shape of gardens, plants and increasing the flow through your garden.”
Ben is joined by his trusty sidekick and equally passionate landscaper
Barbara Leone, who is from the Faroe Islands in Denmark and has lived on the Gold Coast for more than 12 years.
Together, the dynamic duo have the motivation and creativity to make your landscaping dreams come true.
“One thing I have learnt time and time again is that the best results come from a collaborative approach between the client and us.
Learning what clients love and don’t love is crucial,” Ben said.
“From there we add our thoughts based on what we
FEATURED BUSINESS
have seen work/not work.
“Usually there is a ‘click’ moment, where both us and the client are excited to start. This is key before beginning any project.”
Whilst only relatively new to the Tweed Shire, the pair have already made a great name for themselves.
“One testimonial which I think highlights the above collaborative process was working with a client and her family heirloom – a beautiful Japanese Toro, which is a a traditional Japanese lantern,” Ben said.
“In one of our initial
meetings, we were able to understand what type of garden the client wanted and it was then that the client remembered she had access to the Toro.
“This was the ‘click’ moment we search for before starting a garden design. It became the centre piece of the design and provided that initial excitement to start.”
Testimonial:
“Just marvelling in the complexity of the simplicity. Positioning of everything, use of different sized stones, placement of greenery… You’ve nailed it!” said the happy customer.

Landmark art deco site for sale
By Jo Kennett
A BEAUTIFUL art deco building on prime real estate in Tweed Heads has just gone on the market with DJ Stringer Coolangatta.
The property is included in a larger lot running from 27 Bay Street to 24 Stuart Street — a total of 916 square metres.
Whitehall Lodge is in the central commercial hub of Tweed Heads on the edge of Coolangatta, a short walk from the best that both have to offer.
When it was originally built around 1940, Whitehall Lodge was known as Kelvin Court and is a wonderful example of the streamlined modern architecture
style known as art deco or the waterfall style, with signature curved windows and bold structure.
The arrival of the Queensland Railway in 1903 sparked a flurry of development in Bay Street. Hordes of Queensland tourists came down for day trips, picnics and holidays.
Tweed Heads Station was close to the camping areas that ran along the foreshore of Greenmount and Rainbow Bay beaches, as well as to the Tweed Heads waterfront where Jack Evans is now.
The train station was close to the accommodation houses and hotels in Tweed Heads and Bay Street which “had direct access to the river boats at the northern boat harbour wharves in Wharf Street, operated by Skinners to Murwillumbah and the NSW rail terminus”, according to the Tweed Heads Historical Society.
With a huge influx of tourists, Bay Street became home to many boarding houses.
Kelvin Court was built as a
tourist property and was the place to stay and be seen in its heyday.
The Sands family arrived in the early 1920s and were joined by Albert and Elsie Gill in constructing a landmark cafe in Wharf Street.
When the Sands family sold the business, Elsie and her son Kevin took over the running of Kelvin Court (Whitehall Lodge).
The art deco building with its 1960s restaurant on the northern side was a popular guest house and venue for many functions including wedding receptions. The arrival of American troops on leave in the area was a huge boost to the business.
Kelvin Court, now Whitehall Lodge, still stands with shops built around it, in one of the best locations on the coast.
At the end of the street is Tweed Mall, with Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Twin Towns, the beaches of Coolangatta, Rainbow Bay, Snapper Rocks and D-Bah just a walk away.
It is also a short walk to The Tweed Hospital and bowls club.
The property features up to 33 dormitory-style rooms over two levels (many with hand basins).
There are also 12 separate bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, a large communal living area, separate large dining/recreation room, a manager’s office, a selfcontained manager’s unit on the upper level and a rear courtyard.
David said the block has zoning for a ten storey or 34-metre building.
“The ideal development scenario would be retail on the bottom and then maybe offices on the first level and then eight levels of
residential on top,” he said. “It’s also an ideal property for someone who is looking at developing but wants an income stream first.
“It could be revamped or turned into student accommodation and use the outdoor space there for recreation facilities for students.
“There is a huge demand for student accommodation but there is also a big demand for longer term accommodation as well so that is a very good income stream as well.”
The property is for sale by negotiation.
