“There will be no impact to the mature native tree near the [Wollumbin] school gymnasium which has been referred to as a native teak.”
“An independent, professional arborist has confirmed that none of the trees in this area are endangered species. “The department appreciates how im portant it is to balance the need for new and upgraded school infrastructure, while retaining vegetation as much as possible. “We are committed to planting the same amount of trees that are being removed at the site as part of a replacement planting exercise.”

The Weekly has received dozens of let ters from concerned residents calling for the trees to be spared. Among the letter writers are teachers, former students, concerned residents and those inspired by the work of conserva tionist Bruce Chick, who planted the trees several decades ago.
“The department did previously com municate this to the community during recent information sessions. The comms are on the SINSW [School Infrastructure

Local residents and two Tweed Shire Councillors are calling on residents to join a peaceful protest outside Wollumbin High School on Friday to "fight for the trees"
“Other extensive areas of native plant ings, including the slope to the east of the school buildings, will remain in their current state. “The department will not be removing hundreds of trees or bush tucker plantings as has been rumoured on social media.” However, it should be noted that a fur ther 13 trees are earmarked for removal at the Murwillumbah High School site. The spokesperson said a native teak at the Wollumbin site will be spared.
The Weekly put questions to NSW Ed ucation Minister Sarah Mitchell, who responded with a statement attributed to an NSW Department of Education spokesperson.Thespokesperson’s response offered little room for negotiation and highlight ed that the trees needed to go to meet Tweed Shire Council’s development re quirements.“Tomeet the Tweed Shire Council’s development requirements, the Depart ment of Education is planning to remodel the existing car park at Wollumbin High School to cater for the increased demand. As a result, 48 trees are being removed,” the spokesperson said.
“Notwithstanding the exempt develop ment status, the department has briefed Tweed Shire Council officers on plans, in cluding tree removal, and will continue to provide information and engage Council on matters related to the exempt develop ment,” the spokesperson said.
“A range of options were explored to pro vide the required parking, however there were no other viable locations within the site boundaries,” the spokesperson said.
“To force this decision on the commu nity shows we have a state government, Liberals and Nationals, that they don’t care what the community thinks, and they’re out of step. “They don’t deserve to be in government.
THE NSW Department of Education says it will push ahead with the removal of 48 native trees at Wollumbin High School towards the end of September, despite the views of residents or the heritage as sociated with the trees.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education told The Weekly that Wol lumbin High needs a bigger car park while Murwillumbah High School is redevel oped into a merged school campus. However, the car park will only be used as a temporary site for students and staff for around 12 months. Once the merger is complete, it is unknown what will become of the Wollumbin High site and many residents fear, although unconfirmed, that the site could be sold for redevelopment.

The spokesperson highlighted that work at Wollumbin High School is an exempt development in accordance with the State Environmental Planning Policy and there fore does not require Council approval.
“The clearing of 48 native trees at Wol lumbin goes against Council’s planning policies, but also is directly contradicto ry to the state government’s own North Coast Regional Plan, which encourages increased shade in urban areas. It is just wrong,” she said.

Test Drive a Nissan Leaf EV! We have 24, 30 & 40 kWh cars at half the new price. Australian electricity prices have risen by up to 18.3 per cent under a decision by the Australian Energy Regulator due to increased cost of generation due to global rises in coal and gas prices. The increases, which came into effect from July, amount to more than $250 a year based on ACCC figures putting the average residential electricity bill at $1,434.
The man who spoke for the trees It was with incredulity that we read about the planned removal of 48 na tive trees from the Wollumbin High School car park. And for what? To trash the legacy of Australia’s Man of the Trees – Bruce Chick. The gobsmacking arrogance and igno rance of the Department of Educa tion is on full display. Does the department realise that this man has been honoured with an Order of Australia for service to conservation?Doesthedepartment realise this man is a SAGE, Senior Australian Guardian of the Environment? Does the department realise that this man planted thousands of na tive trees from as far back as 1970, as well as inspiring and educating generations to do likewise? When Wollumbin High School was built in 1994 there was barely a tree on the Brucesite.became patron and due to his efforts with the help of countless school kids the site has undergone regeneration and stands as an out standing example of what can be achieved.Surelythe Department of Educa tion, and we stress the word educa tion, should be acting as a role model for best practice when it comes to the environment.Whatmessage is this sending to our kids? Yes, that’s it! Trees are expend able. Put up a parking lot. Sue Page and Rob Drury (former teachers 1998 – 2004), Murwillum bah Wollumbin High School I attach a copy of an article in our local paper, Tweed Valley Weekly, which greatly alarmed me. I do not understand why 49 native rainforest trees are allowed to be cut down for a temporary (from what I understand) car park at Wollumbin High School. Please explain? This high school is to be closed in the future and all students will move to Murwillumbah High School once it has been constructed. I am sure you will be aware of this move by the Department of Educa tion which is, by the way, not pop ular with the general community at Murwillumbah.Mytwograndchildren attend Wol lumbin High School and are A-grade students.Theyfind it very disruptive, and the classrooms and grounds will be cramped for quite a few months. Many students in Murwillumbah are opting to attend the local Catholic high school, Mt St Patrick College, which includes my two grandchil dren and another grandchild who still attends primary school at Mur willumbah.Toaddto this disruption, I cannot believe that you will be allowed to cut down precious native trees when, in fact, us residents have to gain the approval of the Tweed Shire Council. A lot of trees here are protected by the State Environment and Heritage Department.Iamreminded of the Joni Mitchell words from the 70s song “Big Yellow Taxi” – “they paved paradise to put up a parking lot”! Here, in Murwil lumbah, we live in paradise! Brenda Bryant, (letter sent to Min ister for Education) Murwillumbah Tree removal travesty I am completely shocked at the proposal to cut down 48 trees at the Wollumbin High School car park. As one is over 50 years old, it’s a travesty. It’s incredible to think that the education department, who teaches children about sustainability and preserving the environment, is out to destroy what they teach. As an ex-teacher and a local com munity member, I see no need for a school amalgamation in such a small town as Murwillumbah. It will cause traffic chaos around the Hundred Hills area and near the Aveo village whilst building is going on at Murwillumbah High School. There is not sustainability in this action of so-called progress. However, back to the tree issue. If these trees are protected, they should not be allowed to be cut down legally. The infrastructure team at the education department have a lot to answer for. They could be possibly taken to court over this action, in my opinion. If our weather events are set off by climate change and climate change occurs when habitat is lost, then less trees contribute to this issue. We need more trees, not less. To be able to maintain an ethically sound viewpoint, the education de partment needs to review their pro posal for the school amalgamation as not enough community consultation wasManyheld.people in the area who do not read a newspaper will probably be shocked to hear about the proposal to cut these rainforest type trees down. Where is the community consulta tion in Pleasethis?take a stand one and all, email the infrastructure team at the education department to stop the tree felling.
Jen Harvey, Murwillumbah Paved paradise to put up a parking lot The fiasco that is the NSW Govern ment’s determination to close three public schools and create just one site for all public school students from kindergarten to Year 12 in Murwil lumbah continues. Now we have a decision to cut down four dozen trees at Wollumbin High School so that extra parking spaces can be developed for the time Mur willumbah High School students and staff are relocated to that school while works are carried out at the Murwillumbah High School, again with no consultation. The NSW Government is deter mined to go ahead with its plan de spite serious concerns many people, who support a strong and viable pub lic education presence in Murwillum bah, have about it. Already the town has had its TAFE facility seriously undermined and now the public school sector is in serious trouble. The deliberate actions of govern ments, both state and federal, have undermined public education in this country over the last two decades. What is happening in Murwillum bah is a consequence of their deci sions. Christiaan Goudkamp, Murwil lumbah Who do they think they are? I’m like most people that live in Murwillumbah and totally against what the education department are doing, it’s as though they think they’re above the law. Totally wrong removing those trees, also dead against the combining of all these schools. No thought was given to the im pact this has on our kids and the environment,WollumbinHigh should have been improved for all high school kids and Murwillumbah High converted for the younger ages. The education department needs a rocket up them Dennis McGregor, Murwillumbah Pothole nightmares To all motorists in the Tweed Shire Council area, the potholes are ev erywhere.Ourlocal MP Geoff Provest’s office advised Council is totally responsible for all pothole repair on local roads. “If a DA isn’t approved within 180 days the minister can decide it’s State Signif icant, as they did with Splendour in the Grass which locals won in the Land and Environment Court but the state overrode, and that worried us greatly.
“We are just starting the next phase so it can’t happen to anybody else.”
“They falsified the value of it; it doesn’t cost $70 million to build 19 steel sheds, you could do it for $19 million. It has to be over $30 million for the state to decide on it instead of Council. “That’s why we didn’t trust anyone. We were so suspicious of this project that we currently have 21 requests for infor mation with government departments and“WeCouncil.wereexpecting months more hard graft, but it was obviously brought on by Council to knock it out.”
Local resident Mark Doran said it has restored his faith in “some of the planning mechanisms”.“Itwastheright decision, but it should never have got this far,” he said. “We have to give credit to Chris Cherry and Nola Firth for coming and providing their view which held a lot of sway as well. “We are just starting the next phase so it can’t happen to anybody else.”
CUDGERA CREEK residents were popping the champagne when the devel opment application (DA) for a Pottsville food hub was rejected by the state plan ning panel, but have vowed to fight to have laws changed so other communities don’t have to go through the stress they say they experienced.
Locals vow to fight on
“We want the law changed so the value of the DA will control the number of days it is on public exhibition, so the bigger the proposal, the more time the community has to check the information the propo nent presents.
Mr Carney said they were never confi dent of winning. “It was such a weak proposal we won dered how they could think it would get through unless they knew people and had some sort of inside track with the state government,” he said. “The developer decided not to complete the outstanding requests for information (RFIs) and we couldn’t work out wheth er it was just arrogance or a conscious business decision.

THE BUSHFIRE danger period starts today [September 1] on the Far North Coast, as sev eral burn-offs got out of control last week and firefighters were called in to help. Rural Fire Service (RFS) Team Manager Far North Coast Team, Superintendent David Cook, said fires in the open from September 1 to March 31 now require a permit. “Even with a permit, you must notify neigh bours and along the burn notification line,” Mr Cook said. “Fire conditions at the moment are looking fairly promising; it’s fairly wet, but people should not be complacent. “A number of people had difficulties con trolling their fires last week, but we had rain over the weekend which helped. “You can seek advice from your local RFS if you have any questions. “The fire warning system is the same as last year, but using different symbols on the Fire Near Me app. If you download the app you can see the new fire and warning symbols, so advice like watch and act or emergency warnings.”
New recruits are needed for the Bilambil RFS from the Bilambil and Bilambil area and the station is holding an open night (with pizza) on Saturday, September 20, from 6pm to 8pm at 1 Snowgum Drive, Bilambil Heights. Come along and meet the team and see if it is for you.

Congratulations are in order for Council’s Environmental Health Unit which recently won the NSW Team of the Year at the 2022 Environmental Health Australia (EHA) Excellence Awards. The team was identified as having excelled in their daily roles and significant projects in all facets of environment health to make sure the places we live, work and visit are safe.
The project team’s delivery of public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic saw the unit rapidly adapt to issues related to the spread of the illness such as remote work and border closures. Other key areas of success were Council’s design of the behaviour change initiative Tackling Mosquitoes Together, which aims to decrease the risk of mosquito-borne diseases – and their ground-breaking use of DNA technology to identify mosquito-carrying diseases such as Ross River and Dengue fevers.

A total of 200 native trees from Council’s nursery are ready to be planted as street trees in urban areas across the Tweed to improve areas most lacking in shade. Street trees play an important role in reducing the warming effect created by heat-absorbing roads, footpaths and buildings. Trees play a major role in defining the character of a shire and can be used to reduce solar radiation and noise while helping to purify the air. They also help to boost a street with living assets which are both environmentally and aesthetically pleasing. Another koala road death
JUST AS Tweed Shire Council issued an alert for drivers to slow down in koala habitat areas as breeding season begins, a young koala was found dead at Terranora after having been hit by a car. Jasmine Periera found the young de ceased female off Terranora Road (close to Balfours Road) on Thursday, August 25.“I’m a vet nurse at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital and as such I’m exposed to a high volume of trauma cases involving koalas, but nothing compares to the feel ing of finding one for yourself near your home town,” she told The Weekly. “She appeared young and otherwise healthy with no obvious signs of chla mydia; my heart aches thinking of the potential young she could have been car rying in the months to come. “It’s an absolute tragedy for our tiny pocket of koalas in the area.” Terranora resident Angela Carnell found a koala on her driveway in Rosemount Court.“Hewas sitting there and had some fur missing on his paw,” she said. “He looked young. We wrapped him in a towel and called Tweed Valley Wildlife Carers and they contacted the koala peo ple [Friends of the Koala]. “They came and took him and gathered some leaves for him and are going to take him to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. “I’ve been here for 15 years and last year was the first time we’d seen any, but now we see and hear them more often. “If he checks out health wise they will relocate him back here. He was such a beautiful boy.” Koalas are on the move for breeding sea son and Council issued a warning asking drivers to slow down, especially in known koala areas and when it’s dark, and to keep dogs and cats away from koalas. TWEED SHIRE Council has raised a draft proposal to help aid in road repairs, which if approved, could collect additional funding from developers to help cover the cost of new public facilities and construction of Council roads because of damage caused by their heavy haulage vehicles.
The Community Facilities Contributions Plan has been updated and outlines the contributions required from developers to help fund the cost of providing new community facilities for the growing population, such as community centres and multi-purpose spaces. The updated costs – which will see contri bution rates rise from $1,305 to $2,083 for each new lot created by a development – reflect Council’s updated strategies for community facilities and contemporary construction costs. This will apply to all areas of the Tweed, except for Kings Forest, Casuarina Beach and Cobaki Lakes, where a similar plan is already in place.
“The proposed development is characterised as a ‘food and drink premise’ which is prohib ited in zone B5 in accordance with the Tweed Local Environmental Plan 2014,” Council’s reportCouncillorsreads. will vote on the matter.
By Jonathon
The draft contribution rates propose a charge of $0.744 per tonne of material for extractive industries and/or processed quarried material.

The amendments to the floor plan have the proposed bar area renamed to tasting/bar area, the proposed dining/seating is renamed brewery seating and the mezzanine area is renamed lounge/tours/workshops.“Thismeanstheconcern regarding the pro posed overall design not reflecting the princi pal purpose of a brewery remains unchanged, even if references to a ‘restaurant’ is removed,” Council’s report reads. Contribution rates for heavy haulage traf fic generated during the construction of large developments will be determined by a traffic assessment.Thisplan will apply only to new approvals after the contributions plan is approved (if it isManagerapproved).of Roads and Stormwater Danny Rose said development contribution plans were measures that NSW councils used to ensure the cost for new infrastructure to support future growth is placed upon an incoming population, not existing “Contributionsratepayers.areimposed as conditions of development consent and the contribution may be the payment of monetary contributions, dedication of land, or works in kind, as outlined in the plans,” Mr Rose said. “Council is inviting comments from the community on the plans and we encourage everyone, especially those in the development industry, to take a look — whether you support the plans or not, we’d like to hear from you.”
At their most recent meeting, Councillors sup ported a proposal by officers to invite comments from the community on two new development contribution plans: Draft Section 7.11 Contri butions Plan No.15 – for Community Facilities (CP15) and Draft Section 7.11 Contributions Plan No.32 – Developer Contributions for Heavy Haulage (CP32). Council said the plans have been developed to allow Council to seek additional developer contributions to help pay for new or upgraded public facilities required to meet the associated growth in demand for these services.

Developer costs could rise
The Heavy Haulage Contributions Plan is a new plan that outlines contributions develop ers will be asked to provide towards the main tenance of roads as a result of transporting large volumes of goods and materials, such as quarry products and fill for large subdivisions, in heavy vehicles.
“While renaming of the areas may reflect intended purposes, it does not reflect what is likely and will practicably occur, which is the operation of a restaurant/pub, especially considering the size of the proposed kitchen,” Council’s report reads.

Minister for Transport, Veterans and Western Sydney, David Elliott, said work on the new facility would start later this month, and once completed, would be a significant boost for maritime operations, as well as local and visiting boaters at the popular holiday spot.
“The new facility will include a new hard stand area and an upgrade of the slipway to accommo date a 75-tonne boat travel lift,” Mr Elliot said. “The slipway and boat travel lift will increase local use of the boat maintenance facility and improve community access to the river.”

“The old slipway, which has been in operation since the 1960s, will need to be replaced as it is deteriorating, has reduced lifting capacity and could only cater for a small number and range of vessels,” Mr Provest said. “The new boat travel lift will include over-water lift platforms, service pontoons and an access gangway while the boat travel lift is custom-built to have an internal width of 8.4 metres, which is wider than a standard 75-tonne boat travel lift.
“The works will involve demolishing the ex isting boat maintenance facility, including the slipway rails, winch and cradle and workshop, before replacing them with a new office building and storage container.”

“We have cricketers from all walks of life, tradies, school kids, office workers, so it’s a great mix and that’s what I enjoy most about captaining the seniors.
“Women are encouraged to participate and they can play in any of the senior grades.” Last year the Colts came an unlucky fifth in first grade after having a number of games washed out.. “Third grade made the semi-finals, so we were very happy with that,” he said. “We have a nice mix of younger and older players, experienced guys to help out the young er guys as well.
“We were just back in the comp last year, so we are building on what we did last year,” he said. “We have a first grade and third grade side and we are looking to get a second grade side up and it’s looking pretty positive.

Casuarina Beach Barbarians president Adam Leach said it’s Casuarina’s fifth year of having a senior men’s and women’s group where it just used to be a juniors club “Last year the ladies were minor premiers, but they couldn’t play the finals because of Covid so they have gone back to back,” he said. “We used to scratch for numbers, but now we have 50 or 60-plus men’s players, so the depth is “Hopefullygood.we can finish the season with some silverware.“We’vebeen in a grand final with first grade but we’ve never won, so this is a good oppor tunity to get a win.”
Mr Andrews said the lifejacket should have a grab handle on the back to allow easy retrieval of the animal from the water. “It also provides support for their neck so their head stays above water, and be tight enough to stay on but loose enough to allow your dog to swim freely,” he said. “Finally, when you log on your journey with your local Marine Rescue base, let us know there’s a dog on board, that way we can keep an eye out for them, as well as you, if there’s emergency.”
The teams are preparing for a challenging finals series alongside the third ranked under-18 Colts team who won a spot in the preliminary final against Lismore on September 3 after beating Wollongbar 14-0 on Saturday. Casuarina will take on Richmond Range in the preliminary final at Ballina. Successful back-toback seasons for the victorious Amazons sees the ladies confidently eyeing off another piece of silverware to add to the club trophy cabinet.
The Barbarians are no strangers to finals foot ball with first grade appearing in the 2020 grand final and second grade narrowly missing out on finals births since their inception in 2018. The club is very proud of the family involve ment throughout the playing group, with several father and son appearances, including a twin and father combo and partners who play in the men’s and women’s teams on match day. The senior ranks saw a record of 71 registered players this year illustrating the depth of player participation with first grade club debutantes ranging in age from 18 to 57. The second grade side has provided an ex cellent pathway for the many junior players learning the game.

IF THERE’S one man alive today who has played a vital role in the shaping of the Tweed Shire and who’s seen it change over the past 70 years, it’s Murwillumbah local, former Tweed Shire Council clerk and World War II veteran Ron Spence. Mr Spence celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday, August 23, and has looked back on an extraordinary life.Mr Spence, along with his daughter Jenny Lake, recently caught up with The Weekly to detail some of his in credible life story, spanning WWII in Papua New Guinea against the relentless Japanese Imperial Army, to taking the helm of the Tweed Shire Council and helping shape Tweed Heads.Born in 1922 in Punchbowl, Mr Spence’s father David James emi grated from Belfast in Northern Ire land along with his mother, Doris Brown, who emigrated from Durham inMrEngland.Spence remains sharp as a tack and despite having some hearing dif ficulties, he recalls many memories, numbers and dates with great ease. Ms Lake, who lives in Sydney, sup plied The Weekly with some notes from her father’s life story, which includes his army service. His basic training took place at Can terbury Racecourse before training as a signalman at Ingleburn Army Camp.MrSpence’s penchant for numbers was quickly recognised and he was assigned to the communications unit where he learnt Morse code and how to operate a field wireless and tele phones.“With this training completed, I joined the 2nd Australian Air Sup port Control and went by ship to Port Moresby in September 1942,” Mr Spence recalled. In many ways Mr Spence was one of the lucky ones in Papua New Guinea. He was assigned to one of two regi ments to begin the lengthy trek inland to head off the advancing Japanese forces.Thetwo groups were sent up two separate trails, one being the now infamous Kokoda Track another sec ond track, the Goldie River Track, to which Mr Spence was assigned. Mr Spence said his wartime service was challenging to endure. “I remember it well,” he said. “We would sleep on the ground at night and the mosquitos and condi tions were terrible. “It was a challenge, but I think I was fortunate not to be sent on the Kokoda Track, which as we know today became one of the bloodiest campaigns in the war.” When the PNG campaign was over, Mr Spence returned to Australia, firstly to Townsville and then to the Canungra Jungle Training Camp. While stationed at Canungra he met his future wife Daphne Yaun, who lived in the neighbouring Numinbah Valley. When discharged from the army in May 1946, he decided not to return to Sydney, but to make a new life with Daphne in the beautiful Tweed Valley. Mr Spence secured clerical jobs in Murwillumbah with Wrights Dry Cleaners and later with Holden deal ers, Ebbott & Fenner. “Daphne and I were married in 1947 and we enjoyed a very happy marriage of 63 years until Daphne’s death in 2010,” he said. The couple had three children: Jen nifer, Ross and Debra. Seeing little prospect of advance ment in his Ebbott & Fenner job, Mr Spence secured a position at Tweed Shire Council in 1955. “I started out as a D grade clerk and worked my way up to shire clerk [today known as general manager],” heMrsaid.Spence was very conscientious and studied hard for four years by correspondence to qualify as a local government clerk. He would spend the next 27 hap py years at Council and was a lead player in the formation and growth of Tweed Heads, via the Greenbank Island project, which was redeveloped to allow for housing, a hospital and shopping complex. Mr Spence retired in 1982, aged 60, and has spent the past 40 years actively involved with family and community matters, including being recognised as a life member by more than five local committees.
The booklet is entitled The Green bank Island Story and Mr Spence gave a number of talks to interested parties.“Thedevelopment of Greenbank Is land turned the sleepy town of Tweed Heads into a thriving commercial and tourist hub,” he said. “This development also won Tweed Shire Council the coveted local gov ernment Bluett Award in 1972.” Mr Spence continues to live quietly in his Murwillumbah home where he has lived for the last 60 years. He loves to watch Australian sports, including cricket, rugby league and tennis. He’salso an avid reader who enjoys the local papers, including The Syd ney Morning Herald, The Weekly and a wide selection of biographies, World War II stories and novels. Mr Spence was driving right up until he was 96 years old. An interesting fact is Mr Spence learnt to drive while in the army, but did not own a car until 1959. Mr Spence said the key to a long life was to take care of yourself. “I never smoked or drank in excess,” he“I’vesaid.been blessed with good health and a placid disposition.”

Dale said he thinks this will be his last time competing at the Aussie titles.
“They are all half my age,” the 61-year-old, who froths harder than a grommie, said. The World Para Surfing Championship is at Pismo Beach with the International Surfing Association (ISA) hosting from December 4-11.
“Two extra officers appear to be coming to Tweed Heads, but we also need 24/7 police sta tion coverage in Murwillumbah,” Ms Saffin said.
LISMORE MP Janelle Saffin again has taken up the issue of round-the-clock policing in Mur willumbah during a private members statement on services and infrastructure for the town and surrounding villages. This is a growing area, so we need to have 24/7 police station coverage, Ms Saffin told Parliament.“Thatisone of the things that I am driving for,” Ms Saffin said. “The people petitioned for a 24/7 police station in Murwillumbah and we need that toMshappen.”Saffin on October 20 last year brought a Notice of Motion to the Legislative Assembly. Ms Saffin said the Government had had more than a decade in which to make good on its promise and had failed the local community.

“The Australian titles are the platform they use to choose the Australian side for the World Titles and will also be the platform they use to decide who will surf for Australia in the Olympics.“ParaSurfing isn’t in the Olympics yet but they could put it in at any moment. “I don’t think they will put it in just yet, it might be the next Olympics (Los Angeles 2028) after Paris (which is being surfed at Teahupoo in“IfTahiti).Igetto go to the world titles in Pismo then I’d definitely take the Olympics on, if I get the chance but it’s so expensive to go to America, it would cost about $8,000.

Cudgen will have plenty of support on the day given they were first there in u/18’s led by Harvey Moase to take on Ballina and the Hornettes will turn out in the la dies league tag against a quality Marist Brothers outfit. It should be a great day of footy to round out the senior season. See you at the footy.

THE SEMI FINAL standard footy came a week early with an absolute ripper of a contest between the Roosters and the Storm.TheChooks came out on top, albeit just, after an enthralling counter. This game had skill, guile, physicality, intimidation andBasedcourage.onthat performance either of these two teams are a chance and the Roosters further reinforced to me they are the only team who can win outside the top Peoplefour.may think Parramatta are a hope but I feel their performance was inflated by the deplorable Broncos who were playing for their season. Six weeks ago the Broncos were in the top four and looking at a home semi, now they will miss out and have players ‘sulk ing’ because the coach gave them a spray after conceding 113 points in two games. I can’t comprehend this. In any job you are accountable for your performance and not many of the 17 could say they have performed well or met KPI’s or achieved goals in the last two games. When they get called out on it they com plain - I’d be finding out who the two sooks were and moving them on asap to sort the culture of the joint. The Raiders will find their way in now and have nothing to lose but everyone still chases Penrith. They will have a fresh and fit Luai and Cleary back for the finals and will be the team everyone is after. Things haven’t improved for the Bron cos on the women’s front with two loss es although local star Taryn Aitken has been one of the form players of the whole competition.Allroadslead to Bilambil this weekend for the NRRRL grand finals. The Jets will be high on confidence after a week off and a packed house down in the valley. They will take on the all conquering Evans Head Bombers who knocked the Mustangs out on the weekend. The Bombers play an entertaining and expansive brand of footy against the tough and direct style of the Jets. Star halfback Harry Fitzhugh holds the key for the Jets and his combination and bromance with strike back rower Kalani Hensby will be a constant threat for the Bombers on the left edge with Country star Oliver Regan lurking around the middle. It will be a great contest with veterans Roy Bell and Trevor Bolt the ones to watch for the Bombers - good luck to both sides. The Mustangs will feature in reserve grade against an in-form Cudgen in what will be a quality contest with no love lost.

I HAD a most marvellous time at the Byron Writer’s Festival last weekend! It was soul superfood to steep myself in such a broad variety of topics, touching ideas, listening to the stimulating scholarly conversations, often feeling FOMO at what was on at other tents. A proper festival in that respect, and incredibly respectable in every other aspect. The toilets were clean and plentiful – what other festival can you say that at?! There was never a long line (apart from the lunch rush, which was easily avoided) for food, drinks, or the aforementioned cleanly amenities.

FELICITY LAWLESS grew up in Brisbane, then spent 17 years in the Gold Coast hinter land, until love brought her slightly further south, across the border, to the NSW Northern Rivers two years ago. Now her affection has naturally grown to also encompass the region itself.
“I love the trees, the space, the creative com munity, the food and coffee,” she said. Music has always been a cherished activity for Lawless, having learned classical piano from the tender age of six. “I love how music connects people through feeling. Music gives me a purpose, it is my hap py place, my private place, and my place of connection,” she said. “It is the rhythm of my body. It is everything.” Cutting her teeth by busking around Australia and performing to audiences around the world, this gypsy queen has found her soul home, with some fantastic opportunities for gigs, including a residency for The Regent’s Sunset Soirées. Plus she’s working on an upcoming collab oration with Black Rabbit George (aka Paul George from Tijuana Cartel) and Shai Shriki at the Byron Theatre on December 4. “It will be a night of mystical and virtuosic guitar playing,” she says with a smile. Always uplifting and energising, catch Fe licity’s solo Spanish guitar style for free, this Saturday, September 3, from 5pm to 7pm on The Regent’s Balcony. FESTIVAL arrives for a weekend of high-quality, specially-curated, sensational cinema.
GOOD LUCK, LEO GRANDE comes to our screen + THE TRAVELLING FILM
I spent half the time laying in the sun, on the grass (no mud!) beside a chosen marquee, soaking up snippets of wisdom with my dose of vitamin D. Intending to catch bits of several talks per time slot, music festival style – too many wonderful choices – inevitably getting caught up, enthralled, keeping my eyes on my crochet so my ears could focus. It’s still sinking in, like a good movie, excerpts replaying in my mind, sparking scintillating synaptic connections. Slowly embedding, encoding into my grey matter, to stew and spew anew, bubbling up and over as inspiration comes again, like breath. The young poets wowed the crowd on Friday night, Huda proving to be a poetic Goddess indeed! I’m so proud to be part of this fantastic festival, and plan for more satellite events at The Regent for next year. Bumping into quite a few old friends, as you magically do at any festival, ubiquitously commenting on how great it was to be back at the Writer’s Fest, the most civilised celebration of the arts around! Big thanks to all the team for making it such a well-organised and beautifully presented intellectual treat. My cup doth overflow! Hopefully next year, with luck, I’ll be launching my first children’s book there… stay tuned! The festival’s theme was “Radical Hope”, something we’ve collectively learnt all too well these past twoand-a-half years – 2022 particularly. The takeaway message was that hope is what we need most when everything seems hopeless, and love and community is where to find it. Friday with HAUTE COUTURE, followed by gorgeous gouter from Ben’s Patisserie, and a chance to flaunt, flourish or find your French with facilitated conversation (by donation). Also…

HAT FITZ AND CARA will play The Uki Fes tival from 8pm on Saturday October 22. With strong connections to the region, these Bluesfest favourites have a big fanbase in these hills, and it is easy to see why. Together they create a mag ical brand of high energy gospel-blues that has been described by Jeff Lang as, “beautiful, raw and exciting”. They return to the region to help Uki celebrate its flood recovery. I asked Cara what impact the big flood had on her and Fitzy.
2. How was the community response to the flood where you live? Here in Boreen Point, everyone pulled togeth er. In Noosa there were large spaces used for the less fortunate. A lot of the community came to volunteer and offer food and dry clothes.
3. What can the audience at The Uki Festival expect? Well, there are some new songs on the go, and Fitzy has brought in a new guitar, a ‘60s model Gibson Melody Maker – it’s a beauty, Goodbye Tiesco. Hello Gibson!
4. What is the most memorable gig you ever played? We played an amazing festival in Rhode Is land, USA, it took so much effort, with many hoops to jump through to get the visa. When we finally played it was like a release came through in our playing, we just floated the whole way through the gig, not actually believing we had made it. The Uki Festival is on October 22 to 23. As well as music there will be foodie experiences, a big outdoor bush dance, an art auction, re silience networking and much more. Program, park and ride and other details can be found at the Facebook page, ‘The Uki Festival’.

I have brought my little window and door repair business with me and if you need anything repaired, I’m your guy. I specialise in repairs to timber and aluminium windows and doors that are hard to slide, won’t stay up, have rotting in the timber, have loose mechanisms, need lock attention, have damaged putty, need prep for painting and have fly screen damage.
It’s a family business where my father taught me much of my knowledge, and the rest I’ve acquired through experience. I’ve been in business for over 15 years and would love to continue expanding the business in this beautiful area that I now am grateful to call home. Please have a read of some of my “Jaketestimonials:isone of the nicest handymen I’ve ever had come you my house. He has a beautiful calm energy and his work is impeccable. He is a second generation window smith and I can’t recommend him highly enough.” Kate “We had Jake from Working Windows service the large sliding doors on our house. One of which we could barely open. He was very communicative and arrived when he stated he was going to. We were really happy at how he restored all the doors and screens to their original working state and in most cases better. His service is impeccable and always goes out of his way to help with getting the best result possible. We thoroughly recommend him to anyone who has any issues with the doors and windows. You don’t need to look further he’s the best guy.” Phil and Kim Byrne Give me a call or text today 0435 506 465 and check out my website: www.workingwindows.com.au 88347 6672

“It was about 20-18 at half time. Murwillumbah came out well in the second half. “We scored the first try but kept hand ing them the ball back,” Hill said. “We knew we could win if we complet ed our sets but we completed worse in the second half.
THERE IS almost nothing as heart-breaking as when your local footy team gets knocked out of the comp and so it was for the Mustangs, who led First Grade all year, but went down to Evans Head 36-28 in a hard-fought contest at home on Sunday, August 28. Murwillumbah went into the game as favourites but no one was underestimat ing the Bombers.

The cheapest property with a price guide of $1,150,000 to $1,250,000, is an original 790-square metre 1950s riverside home at 13 Fingal Road with a lovely big yard, but it’s a knockdown, with plans available for a more elevated home.
Last year, in a NSW first, the Tweed Byron Aboriginal Land Council (TBALC) was handed the management of the culturally significant Fingal Head reserve. Fingal Head is also home to centenarians like Aunty Bonnie Bjorland (102 in October) and Aunty Mary Browning (104) as well as Aunty Tess Tamock, aged 92, who all grew up on a simple diet of fresh veggies and seafood and a deep spirituality. For many years their friend Gladys ‘Aunty Glad’ Phillips, ran the general store and knew everyone’s secrets as the local taxi driver - she also lived to 100, passing away last year.

The median time on the market for houses is 94 days with four sold in the last 12 months. There was no median price data available because there weren’t enough sales, but suffice to say this is some of the most highly sought after and expensive real estate in the country. Think Byron, only a million times better. The median house rental price is $550 per week based on 11 rental listings in the past 12 months.Therewasn’t enough rental listings data to provide a median price for units and apartments in Fingal Head. Most of the homes are for sale with expressions of interest and no they won’t take $300,000, I already asked.
