What about an EV station?

Michael Balderstone, president Nimbin HEMP Embassy and Legal ise Cannabis Australia (Formerly HEMP Par ty)

An option for the former Murwil lumbah bowls club site, now owned by Woolworths Group, might be to establish an electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

And finally, Kay, my dear wife is alive, well, and manages to put up with me.

Electricity retailers are in a price squeeze and have slashed the amount they pay for your excess solar, now paying zero - 8c per kWh, down from the 21c we were paid in 2020. Unless you have solar and batteries you are facing serious increases in energy costs. 888 Solar Tek have installed hundreds of solar battery systems in the last 8 years and can help you with great deals on the most reliable and long lasting solar batteries in Australia.

In fact, the majority of stoned driv ing tests ever done show cannabis users are better drivers with their medicine inside them than not. Same as everybody else taking their daily prescribed medications to make them function better.

They are not allowed to drive with any THC in their saliva, which is the major issue we are protesting about.

The appalling scene of Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt, his Deputy Mehreen Faruqi and many of their followers virtually celebrat ing the death of our former Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II, within minutes of its announcement, per manently puts an end to the myth that the Greens are a “humanitarian” party, in my opinion.

ability to kick someone while they’re down rules supreme with these peo ple.It is nothing short of despicable, in my view, the way that Bandt and Faruqi have conducted themselves, in a way that is completely unfitting for a member of parliament, let alone the leader and deputy leader of a political party in the Australian parliament. They and the people supporting them should hang their heads in shame.

At that time, Ron was a senior member of the administrative staff ‘downstairs’ in the old building be side the fire station in Main Street, Murwillumbah.ClarkeHallwas the Shire Chair man. Bill Renehan was the Shire Clerk. My good wife, Kay Crozier, née Kay Ryan, worked on the switch board, did most of the typing and a variety of other tasks, whilst I worked ‘upstairs’ in the engineering depart ment.Ron was indeed a placid person, ever polite, a thorough gentleman. His ultimate elevation to the role of Shire Clerk was well-deserved.

exactly the true nature of the people we are dealing with here.

There is a fantastic program on nim binmardigrass.com of real experts with experience on all aspects of the cannabis plant, as well as comedians, musicians, performers and protesters of every sort.

More particularly because under the guidance of Bob Hope, who was not a comedian, but deputy engineer at the time, and I a mere assistant, I spent endless hours doing calculations and drawing plans for the Greenbank Is landButproject.Ihaveto wonder if any of the other engineering staff at that time are still alive. And that is a sad and sobering thought.

A better way to protect trees

There are seven small but practical ways you can make a difference in your community.

Sue Jolly, Murwillumbah

to and from Sydney.

It is a large piece of land, which would allow a decent solar array to be put in place and provide for a sub stantial number of cars to charge, making it a commercial proposition for a business operator.

The current building could be reno vated to provide the battery location and offices. Traffic impacts would be negligible. Might generate more visitation that a rail trail.

Those were the days. May they con tinue for Ron Spence.

If we want to protect trees, the most meaningful action we can take is to stop eating red meat, in my opinion.

If we cannot get doctors at King Street Medical as we are now classed as a ‘city’, then it makes sense a ‘city’ would have a 24/7 police presence. Mind you, I think it is absolutely ridiculous that we are regarded as a Butcity.I do believe we have enough residents to warrant a manned 24/7 police station.

I worked with the Queensland Gov ernment where we monitored tree clearing over 30-plus years. On aver age, 11 square kilometres of bushland (mostly untouched) was cleared every day, 93 per cent for beef and sheep production. That’sabout a million trees cleared each day for cattle and sheep. Just google the ‘SLATS’ project.

Thank you for the memories Ron

I read with dismay the reaction at cutting down 48 trees for a school.

There are also an estimated 1.6 million people involved in their care.

I think of Bob Hope himself, and Tim Fenton, who designed the local Olympic swimming pool, and Ken Bean who moved to Blacktown in Sydney. There were two other characters who also worked there whose names sadly escape me.

Australian electricity prices have risen by up to 18.3 per cent under a decision by the Australian Energy Regulator due to increased cost of generation due to global rises in coal and gas prices. The increases, which came into effect from July, amount to more than $250 a year based on ACCC figures putting the average residential electricity bill at $1,434.

PFAS was used in chemical firefighting as an effective method to douse fire

ALARMING LEVELS of PFAS and PFOS have recently been detected east of the Gold Coast Airport and entry path ways into sensitive environmental areas, prompting Tweed Mayor Chris Cherry to raise an urgent motion.

Council sits on a Community Avia tion Gold Coast (CAGC) Consultative Committee, which recently received a contamination report tendered by Air Services in 2021.

The report indicated levels of PFAS and PFOS contamination have increased at testing sites in and around the Gold Coast Airport.“In2021, monitoring reports show levels at the eastern boundary of the airport site ranging from 0.128 – 18.5 µg/l,” Council’s report reads.

“These levels, as reported, are risking the fragile ecosystems around the airport.

“There has been annual monitoring, but it’s minimal and there are key areas that still need to be sampled.”

“Communityspecies.representatives on the CAGC Committee have been asking for this testing to occur without success.”

“This is impacting the Tweed on a mas sive scale, some of the highest in the world I’ve been told and the issue is not getting anyMsbetter.”Smith said Air Services were re sponsible for the use of the firefighting foam which contains PFAS and this is a “federal matter”.

PFAS, also known as per- and poly-flu oroalkyl substances are a collection of manufactured chemicals. Also called “for ever chemicals” PFAS includes PFOA, PFOS, Gen X, and many other fluorinated chemicals that feature strong fluorine-car bon bonds that make them virtually in destructible.PFASandPFOS were commonly used in firefighting chemicals but are no longer used due to links to serious health con ditions such as cancer and birth defects.

Councillors will discuss and vote on the motion during their monthly meeting on Thursday, September 15.

“This was known in 2008 and it was unearthed by us in 2016, and we are still in the same place,” she said.

“Safe drinking water recommended lev els of PFAS/PFOS is 0.07µg/l and recre ational levels (swimming etc) is 2µg/l.”

PFAS and PFOS chemicals have been shown to be harmful to human health and Council’s report highlighted that groundwater contamination by PFAS/ PFOS chemicals are at levels “greatly exceeding those set for safe human in teraction”.

“The Cobaki Broadwater is a Class 1 ma jor fishery and PFAS/PFOS chemicals are known to bio-accumulate in fish/aquatic /organism

Mayor Cherry will move that Council writes to the Gold Coast Airport and Air services Australia and requests immediate and regular seasonal PFAS/PFOS testing in the area west of the Gold Coast Airport runway at the main entry pathways to the Cobaki Broadwater, Terranora Creek and Tweed River estuaries.

“Evidence presented at the meeting in dicates the discharge points to the Tweed River estuary have still not been sampled,” Council’s report noted.

The motion is also recommending that Council writes to the NSW EPA, who is leading the NSW Government PFAS Investigation Program, to confirm whether the Gold Coast Airport PFAS Investiga tion’s public health advice is accurate in

light of increasing PFAS contamination levels identified at testing sites.

“With the results to be reported back to Tweed Shire Council and NSW Environ ment Protection Authority (EPA),” the mayor’s motion reads.

Longtime campaigner against the use of PFAS and PFOS and Tweed Heads resident Lindy Smith said this is a “huge issue that is not going away”.

Bray Park Weir wall raising best option Car narrowly avoids crashing into river

Tweed-Byron Police are continuing inquiries into how the incident occurred.

Councillors are being given several options to consider, including the least preferred option by the PRG, but likely the most effective, which is raising the weir wall.

Raising the weir may also require narrowing of the weir, which Council’s report says could be the best long-term solution.

TWEED DISTRICT Rescue Squad attended a single-vehicle collision on Sunday, September 1, where a vehicle narrowly avoided entering the Tweed River at Eviron.

“This has become a very problematic monthly risk to manage and on occasion twice a month.” Council said the community consultation process, which included consideration of a 1980 agreement not to raise the weir wall, adopted the option of a hinged barrier to “mitigate the risk of saltwater contamination of the Tweed district water supply”.

Studies undertaken by Water Research Labo ratory forecast that the frequency and severity of such overtopping events will increase with climate change, according to a report by Tweed Shire Council.

Tweed Valley Weekly Locals Supporting Locals 88554

The need to address overtopping events, which has now reached 60 since January 2017, is imperative and Council is calling on Coun cillors to take action via a vote this Thursday, September 15.

Councillors were unable to decide in June on the matter and deferred it to a workshop which

the Bray Park Weir remains one of the Tweed's biggest issues

“In developing concept designs for the hinged barrier, it was deduced that a hinged barrier across the whole of the weir is not a suitable option for the mitigation of the risk of saltwa ter contamination of the Tweed district water supply. Council now needs to consider further options,” Council’s report reads.

SALTWATER OVERTOPPING the Bray Park Weir and entering the Tweed Shire’s water sup ply remains one of the most pressing matters for the future of the shire’s water supply.

Council staff are now recommending that Council investigates narrowing the weir and the option of a permanent raising of the weir wall also be investigated, to mitigate the risk of saltwater Councillorscontamination.haveseveraloptions to consider, including that Council re-establish the PRG to review the findings of the latest report and consider further options.

Rescue crews used a ladder to access the ve hicle before the Westpac Rescue Helicopter medical crews commenced further treatment.

The Rescue Squad said it was about 3.20pm when they received a call that a vehicle had left the road on Tweed Valley Way and was resting on the “Rescueriverbank.crewsarrived to find a single-vehi cle collision which came to rest in the muddy bank of the Tweed River. Thankfully it was not submerged under the water,” the Rescue Squad posted online.

“Essential Energy ensured the scene was safe and remained on site afterwards to repair some damaged infrastructure,” the team said.

“After NSW Ambulance Paramedics com pleted a medical assessment and provided ini tial treatment, rescue crew members carefully extricated the patient onto a rescue board and secured them into a stokes litter.”

“The weir has overtopped 41 times, of which required deployment of blocks for a total of 186 days, to prevent saltwater ingress into the weir pool,” Council’s report reads.

A short time later, at 2am on the morning of his death, dash cam footage showed the BMW stopped in the middle of the left-hand lane of the M1, just in front of the Kanes Road over pass bridge at Cudgera Creek.

Anthony Stott taught at St Peters Lutheran College in Brisbane and died in February, 2020, when he was hit by a semi-trailer on the M1 after allegedly being held tied to a chair and hit with a golf club in a shed at the Cudgera Creek farm Grainger lived at with Mark ‘Frosty’ Frost.

Tweed Police released dash cam footage of Stott’s silver BMW driving down the M1 in the Tweed Shire, overtaking a semi-trailer who sounded his horns because the BMW didn’t have its lights on.

Supt Roptell is raising funds for the Police Citizens Youth Club’s (PCYC) at-risk youth programmes and NSW Police Legacy, and he’s looking for support from local residents.

“I’ve since had three fights; my last was in 2016 and since I came here in 2019, I’ve been a member of the Tweed Heads PCYC and I box there quite often.

“It started with a youth programme at Redfern and then I boxed and sparred at several PCYCs.

“I took up boxing in my early 40s and it’s a fantastic outlet and one of the best things I’ve found to keep fit and healthy,” he said.

Police found a photo of Stott tied to a chair on Grainger’s phone and texts with the photo ask ing their friends if anyone knew who Stott was.

Stott was detained for several hours and al legedly beaten repeatedly with a golf club before Frost and friend Craig Button drove him in

Judge Jeffery McLennan took less than two hours to deliver his verdict before releasing Grainger on bail, saying he didn’t believe jail was inevitable.

Superintendent Dave Roptell needs your support for his charity fight

“I’m training as hard as I can for this fight so there is no stone unturned.

Toxicology tests on Stott’s body came back negative for drugs and alcohol, although the court was told he could have been psychotic at the time of the break-in.

TWEED-BYRON Police District Superinten dent David Roptell has signed up to jump in the ring for a charity City versus Country boxing fight against “a city slicker”.

Forty-one-year-old Grainger had pleaded not guilty to detaining Stott with intent to obtain advantage during the court case which began in Lismore on August 29.

She claimed he was carrying a knife, however police hadn’t tested any knives at the scene and the prosecutor said in court she had made the claim up.

LAUREN GRAINGER has been found guilty of kidnapping a Brisbane school teacher at Cudgera Creek near Pottsville, after appear ing in Lismore District Court on Wednesday, September 7.

Woman found guilty of Stott kidnapping

Late last year, Button and Frost pleaded guilty to detaining and assaulting Anthony Stott to obtain advantage and received reduced sen tences in return for evidence against Grainger.

She is due to be sentenced in Lismore District Court in December.

According to ABC reports, Grainger told the court she acted in self defence after finding a stranger in her home.

At the time, Tweed Police Detective, Chief In spector Brendon Cullen, said 43-year-old Stott, a private school French teacher, had returned from a trip to Peru days before his death.

Police later reported that passengers on the plane with Stott said he had been acting strangely, talking to himself, swearing, and masturbating.Hehadstopped over in Sydney, staying with his family, before flying into Brisbane the day before his death. Stott’s father told police his son had been acting strangely and he had asked him if he was taking drugs.

Later Button handed himself into police.

“One of the drivers was transported to Gold Coast Uni Hospital in a serious condition,” heChsaid.Insp Vandergriend said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Police said they could not identify the person at the time of print, as they are investigating and speaking with the family.

AN 83-YEAR-OLD woman has sadly died following a head-on collision on Tumbulgum Road near Murwillumbah at around 8.40am on Tuesday, September 13.

THIRTY-EIGHT RESIDENTS are breathing a collective sight of relief following a Tweed Shire Council decision to approve a strata title development application for 38 beach side units at 41 Tweed Coast Road in Bogangar.

Representations were made by 85 members of the Cabarita Beach/Bogangar community calling for approval of the strata title applica tion, and one submission against the approval.

The accident occurred on a straight section of the road with a speed limit of 100km per hour between Cane Road and Racecourse Road.

“The driver of the Subaru and Toyota – two men aged 18 and 63 – were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in serious but stable con ditions,” police said.

“Witnesses are assisting police to determine the cause,” Ch Insp Vandergriend said.

The decision was made at an extraordinary meeting at Council’s chambers in Tweed Heads on Monday, September 12, and overturns an earlier ruling on August 4 to reject the devel opment application (DA21/0983).

Tweed Police Chief Inspector David Vander griend told The Weekly the accident involved three vehicles and three people, resulting in one deceased and two people conveyed to hospital for “health checks and mandatory testing”.

Tweed Police said the front seat passenger of the Toyota – an 83-year-old woman – could not be revived and died at the scene.

The development application was seeking ap proval for a 38-lot strata subdivision at the site. This development, which includes 38 residen tial units, was originally approved by the state government in December 2009.

While it has been a tumultuous affair for the new apartment owners, there is now a collective sense of relief from residents.

Following a requirement to provide 14 days’ notice of the review, which concluded on Friday September 9, the extraordinary meeting was called in Tweed Heads earlier this week.

“That’s why the parents and teachers are supporting us closing; some parents even donated their fees for the day so that shows a lot of support and understand ing.”Burringbar Community Preschool Burringbar Director Andrea Walker said community preschools are not-for-profit.

“Families feel this is a safe place to talk about their child and their life which we appreciate, so while we are educators and teachers, we also carry that emotional toll and there is burnout from that,” she said.

“We’re the ones who identify early learn ing disabilities which is crucial for access to services and we’re the ones having the initial tough conversations with parents.

The workers want better pay and con ditions, with many earning around $23 an hour for a role they say requires sig nificant skills and carries “a great deal of responsibility.”PossumsCommunity Preschool Director Karen Shackell said they want people to understand “the dire state” the sector is in.

Pottsville Community Preschool Direc tor Sofia Machado said COVID highlight ed what an emotional job it was.

“As repairs continue across the region, people should remain vigilant in dealing correctly with old lead-based products,” Dr Douglas said.

there was a push “by certain ministers” to cut “That’squalifications.reallydisappointing; it says that we are just nose wipers and babysitters, which we are not, and we don’t need spe cial skills,” she said.

If you are concerned you or your child has been exposed to lead, contact your general practitioner or the Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055.

“It’s a mentally, physically demanding and highly emotional profession.”

The North Coast Public Health Unit is encouraging commu nities to use appropriate protection when fixing their homes, particularly older structures which may contain lead-based primers, paints, or dust in roofs and wall cavities that can become a significant health risk.

Lead can harm people of all ages, but the risks are greater for pregnant women, infants and children.

“The rates of pay are just ridiculous.”

“All the regulatory requirements make it a very high stress job with incredibly high rates of burnout and it doesn’t finish when children walk out the door.

RESIDENTS ARE being urged to be aware of lead poisoning as they repair and rebuild structures and landholdings following the February flood.

“That’s difficult and we also provide re ports to psychologists and occupational therapists.”Chillingham and Tyalgum Community Preschool Director Tracy McCarthy said

Kingscliff Mini School Director Lindy Andrews said they want to support edu cators so they stay in the job.

“We are really underpaid; you get around $26 an hour if they have a diploma,” she said.“It’s embarrassing. People are leaving the sector at an alarming rate, but we know for quality outcomes children need quality ed ucators, so the future is really frightening.

“It takes a huge toll on us and our fam ilies and enough is enough.”

“We’re looking at a child’s development, but we are constantly thinking about how we can support the family as well.

“If you suspect historical lead exists, take precautions to reduce exposure whilst work occurs such as using disposable coveralls and face masks with a P1 or P2 filter when handling or disposing, and do not dry sand or scrape old lead paints. If in doubt, seek advice from a professional lead consultant.”

“We need to be seen as professionals. We care for children but we educate them as well,” she said.

Dr Paul Douglas, Director North Coast Public Health Unit, said elevated lead levels in the blood can cause anaemia, kidney problems and neurological or developmental effects.

MURWILLUMBAH HIGH School has proven once again it has one of the best agricultural courses in the state, after its students took out three coveted sheep meat awards in Dubbo recently.

Over the six months since the catastrophic flooding across the Northern Rivers, Sunshine Sugar has been working non-stop to get the business back in operations and has maintained a full workforce, but said it has been a huge expense.

Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Murray Watt, along with NSW Deputy Premier Paul Toole, visited the Broadwater Sugar Mill late last week to make theSunshineannouncement.SugarCEO Chris Connors expressed his heartfelt thanks to both the state and federal government representatives for their support.

Mr Connors also acknowledged his workforce for their efforts in putting a detailed submission together and the support the relevant government agencies provided throughout the process.

The actual costs incurred by Sunshine Sugar in the ongoing recovery effort is expected to be close to $44 million with in surance covering $30 million. The financial assistance provided under the Anchor Grant scheme will come close to mitigating the overall costs involved.

The NSW Government has announced it will reintroduce mobile speed camera warning signs after removing them in late 2020.

“[The NSW Government] is rolling out 1,000 fixed warning signs for mobile speed cameras

to remind drivers they can be caught speeding anywhere, anytime,” Mr Constance said. Introduced in mid-November 2020, the NSW Government’s changes saw the removal of warn ing signs and high visibility markings on the mobile speed camera vehicles, combined with additional operating hours and cameras capable of reading speeds in both directions.

Around 1,000 mobile speed camera warning signs will soon be reinstated across NSW, just nine months after the government’s decision to remove them.

I met amazing creative people from the area and love the sense of community.”

We even have him on a special Thursday night Balcony session (6pm to 8pm), which now has been designated a public holiday (Sept 22).

The Regent will open for 6 days per week from now, to encompass both QLD and NSW school holidays, accommodating our visitors from across the border, since the Tweed region straddles both sides of our mighty river, with easy access from the glittering Gold Coast ... and a world apart!

Craig set to light up The Regent

It’s funny how the ranges seem to put the neighbouring Byron Shire inhabitants off –it’s such a beautiful drive!

ST ANTHONY’S School at Kingscliff hosted a national finch show on Saturday, August 27, with one local breeder taking out a gold and two silver medals.

MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST CRAIG Atkins has music in his blood, cherishing early mem ories of his father playing button accordion, growing up in the Riverland region of South Australia (Meru Country), though the thought of being a performer himself didn’t strike him until his first band in the early ‘90s.

It was the first time since the pandemic hit that the Federation of Zebra Finch Societies of Australia had been able to hold their annual show. The event brought together teams from east ern Australia and visitors from as far afield as Western Australia and Tasmania.

I enjoy it every time. Murwillumbah is worth a full day trip, with the Tweed Regional Gallery, Museum, and our own arty cohorts, M|Arts, offering a scrumptious array of delectable eye-candy and inspirational mindfood. Just across the road, Knox Park has a wonderful playground, and skatepark, with fun to be had for families of all ages.

Unwind at a movie to recharge and you’re ready for the drive home! Sounds like a perfect day for holiday activities to me, but I am somewhat biased!

We’re looking forward to you rolling out a picnic rug by the river, beverage of choice in hand, gobbling gluten-free fish and chips and much more!
