History of the Greenback

INCE 1981 the Greenback Tailor Fishing Competition has been a community focused event helping raise funds for local initiatives and setting the standard of beach fishing competitions on the Tweed Coast. The Greenback was originally run by the Cabarita Amateur Fishing Club in 1981 and was traditionally held over the June long-weekend. The first competition attracted a handful of competitors and was started to raise funds for the local nippers. The fishing club and in particular, local identities Pat and June O’Keeffe, worked tirelessly to build the competition and by the 10th anniversary 438 anglers signed on for the event, which took place at Cabarita Gardens Lake Resort. Former Manly rugby league star Tom Mooney was the big winner of the 1991 competition, winning $1000 with his 3.865kg tailor. Cabarita Beach-Pottsville Beach Lions Club member and long-time Greenback advocate John Harden said the event has seen some big catches. “Anglers vie for the prize for the largest tailor with 3.865Kg considered a big catch by Mr Mooney in 1991, considering a few years’ prior the winning tailor weighed a mere 400grams - one of only two tailor caught in the competition,” he said. “The other weighed quite a bit heavier but unfortunately was eaten by the family cat when the catcher had dropped in home to clean up before the weigh-in.” As the competition progressed Gary Timperley, June O’Keeffe’s father, travelled from Goondiwindi to assist with the competition. Mr Timperley, aka Arab, brought with him a range of fishing gear and a truck full of fireworks for the finale as well as delivering food to the anglers. It was especially welcome when battling big seas and strong winds. “In 1999 the winner was Frank Ott with his 3.42kg tailor, he also won in 2013 with a 4.75kg tailor,” Mr Harden said. “I think Mr Ott was the only person to win twice – although I’d need to double check that fact.” Due to the considerable difficulty in attracting sufficient volunteers to assist with managing the Greenback competition, it was not held in 2003 and 2005. In 2004, Casuarina gained the sponsorship rights for the

competition in an attempt to save the event, however this proved to be unsuccessful as a charity event. Cabarita Beach - Pottsville Beach Lions Club agreed to take on the competition as a club project in 2005 and held the first Lions Greenback Charity Fishing Competition in 2006. Since taking over the club has made significant contributions to the community including: funding the walkway at Norries Headland and the Lions Park, the skate park, the Cabarita Youth Project, Pottsville Community Hall, disaster appeals, medical research and has provided assistance to many organisations and individuals. The competition is run entirely by volunteers and all funds raised are presented to the beneficiaries. “To honour the contribution made by June and Pat O’Keeffe, they were made patrons of the competition,” Mr Harden said. Since 2006, the competition has attracted a field of between 500-1000 anglers who compete in four divisions including men’s, veterans, ladies and juniors (under16). With 46 categories to be selected for prizes the weigh in circle becomes very busy. The Pottsville Fishing Club, under the watchful eye of the NSW Department of Fisheries determines the official results. Ask a local about the Greenback and they’re likely to tell you the event has become an institution on the Tweed Coast as well as providing a tourist drawcard for the area. The event is held in front of the Cabarita SLSC, however anglers can fish anywhere along the beaches and estuaries between the Tweed River and Evans Head. All fish weighedin are auctioned to raise funds for charity. Between 2006-2014 the competition has raised $114, 000 which was donated to Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club, Volunteers Rescue Association, Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Bogangar and Pottsville Public Schools. “Over the 30 years of the event, Alvey Reels Australia, Rory Curtis Good Guys, Perry Homes, J Fowler Building services, Tweed Shire Council, Southern Cross Credit Union, North Star Holiday Resort and Cabarita Beach Hotel have continually supported the event. “The prize pool totals over $30,000 this year and if entrants didn’t win the grand prize, there are “lucky draw” prizes up for grabs.

or thousands of years before European settlement the local Indigenous people lived in tribal camps scattered throughout what is today the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The low-lying area where much of the township of Kingscliff is today was very swampy and mosquito-infested. This ground would not have been conducive to the tribes setting up their camps. There is evidence however of camps around the foreshore of Cudgen Creek as this area was rich in flora and fauna. Here they gathered berries, hunted and fished. Possibly some families inhabited the higher ground around Kingscliff and Cudgen. The healthy diet and lifestyle resulted in tall, physically strong people who had no cause to move great distances in search of food, as there was a local abundance of fish, oysters, prawns, pippies, birds, marsupials, lizards, yams and berries. There is evidence however that they travelled to the Bunya Mountains, north-west of Toowoomba, for the periodic bunya nut gathering and feasting.

T

WEED Coastal Living took some time out with Kingscliff fashionista Carla Dorge owner of Mode Voyage brand and On Kliff fashion outlet at Kingscliff.

Firstly, could you please tell our readers how you started out in fashion? This is a question asked if me often by clients, I honesty can say you are born with a creative flair as when I was 9 my parents had delicatessen import stores and I would sneak out in the night and display and merchandise the entire store then go back to bed father used to say! How do you know how to do that? I’d reply I don’t know - I attended East Sydney Technology which had courses running through Colleges in NSW as Queensland at the time did not offer this intense course I worked in retail for my parents and for Myer which at the time offered amazing management training I was also a fashion model so I learnt all facets of the Fashion industry from behind the scenes to retailing to construction and design.

What’s your connection to the Tweed and Kingscliff ? My connection with this Kingscliff came when I returned from living in Europe for seven years and wanted to restart my designing and interest in retailing. I was looking for an area that wasn’t spoilt for choice and had affordable retail spaces, Kingscliff offered all of the above and has by far been my most successful store and my favourite area to date.

What are some of your passions and when did you first design an outfit? I am passionate about all things creative from designing collections to interior design to creating amazing food. It’s in my blood and I love my work space and feel very blessed that I don’t go to work every day, instead I go to my place which brings me great joy. I designed my first collection in the 1980s using linen and silk and cotton voile a jacket with a triangle shape in the back and a week after wearing it a store in Pacific Fair had it in their window - I guess that’s a compliment.

What’s your number one fashion tip and what styles do you admire? My greatest fashion tip is wear clothing that fits your body shape. Don’t be afraid to try something different, in my store we don’t have the run of the mill styling. Be open to a new look most clients are very pleasantly surprised by the transformation. Styles I admire are styles of the 1930s and 1940s woman were stylish woman that looked impeccable these shapes are widely used for inspiration still now and I am no exception.

Could you please give readers some of the background into your label?

Mode Voyage has been in production now for nine years and I designed this label especially for my Kingscliff store with travellers and resort styles my main focus hence the fashion for travel motto I design clothing for real woman’s shapes with target age group of 30 plus. In every new collection there is a style for each of the different body shapes. I pay particular attention to the fit and make which ensures key things that woman want and ask me for are covered. All our label is 100 per cent Australian made as our factory is located in Burleigh Heads. This is my passion to always try and make in Australia and keep the finish and quality totally in my control.

How’s business today and what’s your hopes for the future? Business is great. I feel we have built a good reputation in the Tweed, Sydney, Gold Coast and Brisbane areas for our fit and great use of colour and quality fabrics. However, there is no such thing as too many customers and we always welcome new business with great enthusiasm and appreciation. Looking to the future I would love to open a store in the beaches area of Sydney I’m very hands on in my store and love the interaction in store with my clients as this is where I learn the most about what I need to design. I want to increase my presence in the industry and increase my Website sales to a new level.

Coastal clubs develop collaborative new model W

ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball congratulated the Tweed clubs for their win at the Clubs & Community Awards. “Congratulations to clubs involved in this initiative for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of people in Tweed,” he said. “The support and sense of community spirit that these clubs have exercised through their award-winning program is inspiring, and we are proud of the way in which they have dedicated both their time and resources to drive key projects in the local area. “It is rewarding when clubs work together with their members and local community groups to achieve better outcomes for the next generation.”

73416

hat started as a conversation over a beer between the managers of four Tweed Coast clubs has seen the rise of an innovative new collaborative model that’s benefiting the whole community. The model has proven so good that the Clubs in Collaborations Award was recently presented to The Kingscliff Bowls Club, Cabarita Beach Bowls & Sports Club, Pottsville Sports Club and Cudgen Leagues Club “The clubs started out sharing information about each other’s club with regards to what’s working and what doesn’t,” Michael Judd General Manager Pottsville Beach Sports Club said. “We all agreed to help each other out where needed and support our local communities. It’s fantastic for all the club’s involved to be recognised for our efforts in basically giving back to our local communities, so as a combined effort we are covering all of the Tweed Coast.” Michael said other clubs could follow suit by supporting their local communities. “This all begun with a bunch of neighbouring club managers getting together to see how we can work together smarter in terms of Job sharing, training, support and assisting each other wherever needed, it just made sense for us all to work together,” he said. The four clubs were given the award at the prestigious 2016 Clubs & Community Awards where they were recognised for their joint efforts to assist in upgrading important community facilities and services on the Tweed Coast. The clubs have come together with key stakeholders and local council to work towards upgrading the Pottsville and Cudgen Fire Brigade Service headquarters. These clubs, along with Tweed Heads Bowls Club, South Tweed Sports Club and Seagulls Club are major supporters of Little Wings. Clubs in the Tweed region have played an essential role in supporting Little Wings to cater for families from regional NSW with seriously ill children through hosting local fundraising events and activities, with a major fundraising event held at Tweed Heads Bowls Club last year. There was fierce competition in the Clubs in Collaboration category this year, with the judges awarding a Highly Commended to Moorebank Sports Club and several local clubs for their generous support of charity help2help.

EVER HEARD OF A SACRIFICIAL ANODE? A sacrificial anode is a vital part of your water system, and having it inspected can be the difference between an efficiently working system and a costly replacement. The anode in your system should never be allowed to corrode away, whatever type or brand of system you have – solar, electric, gas or heat pumps.

For a LIMITED TIME we will check your anode in the Tweed & Gold Coast area FREE OF CHARGE “REMEMBER YOU CAN’T LOSE – NO ANODE REPLACEMENT – NO CHARGE!”

But come autumn many people suddenly appreciate just how important their hot water system is when it fails to deliver enough or frequently no hot water. Often there are signs for months that there is a problem with the system and has gone largely unnoticed leading to a very expensive full replacement costing and average of $1500. This is why it is very important to have your system checked and maintained by a professional plumber once a year. Now is a great time to call us today to protect your investment. What are anodes? An anode is a magnesium rod that is usually screwed onto the top of your hot water tank. Anodes on hot water tanks are known as ‘sacrificial anodes,’ because they almost primarily exist to protect the rest of the tank from damage and rust. Sacrificial anodes are designed to corrode, and should be replaced every 5 years depending on the type of tank (which is why you get a manufacturer’s warranty of 5 years). As well as sacrificed anodes most hot water units have 3-4 valves that need to be changed every 5 years. If sacrificial anodes aren’t replaced on your tank, there is nothing to stop the corrosion and breakdown of your system. It’s important to get your anodes regularly replaced so your

hot water tank doesn’t break down. Replacing the sacrificial anode on your hot water system is not only the smart thing to do if you want your system to last – it’s also the best plan of action to save money in the long run. If an anode is left to corrode for too long, the system will become unusable and you will have to invest in a more expensive new hot water heater. Most tanks have a 5 year warranty, and anodes usually won’t last longer than that – so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on how long you’ve had the tank. Very simply maintaining your hot water system is an investment not a cost. To maintain your hot water system the main things you need to allow for are: • Replacing the sacrificial anode every 5 – 7 years • Flushing out all of the minerals and sediment that over time are deposited in the bottom of the storage tank every 3 – 5 years • Have the tempering valve maintained, tested and certified every year • Flush the temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR valve) every 6 months • Replace the temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR valve) every 5 years • Replace the expansion control valve (ECV valve) every 5 years Apart from flushing the temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR valve) all the other work is legally required to be undertaken by a licensed plumber. Story Dogs help youngsters discover the joy of reading

EARNING to read can be tough for young kids and reading out loud in front of an audience can be downright terrifying for most people.

progress without pressure. “The future is very rosy for Story Dogs,” she said. “Our goal is to have Story Dogs in every school in the country. The only state we have no dog teams is ACT, we have just started in the Northern Territory and we now have a National Story Dogs Day.” Mrs Cameron-Dow said there were many fantastic Story Dog moments. “At present, I am very busy introducing Story Dogs into Lismore where we have had an amazing response. This has been so encouraging as my colleague and myself have devoted so much time and energy into the preparation of a three-day launch this month. “I am particularly excited to have recently trained a dog team in Clunes and the volunteer has put up her hand to take over the coordination of Lismore from me. This is probably my best moment at present as trying to coordinate two areas is huge. On top of this, as a result of the launch, we now look like also going into Byron and Ballina Schools and will need coordinators down there too. “Even though I am retired, four areas are a little beyond me so I am especially delighted to find someone I can train, who in turn will then train others for those areas with my help.” Anyone wanting to find out more about Story Dogs, or to find out about getting involved can phone: 0411 536 355 or email: info@storydogs.org.au

It’s a process we’ve all been through, that sinking feeling when you’re asked to read out loud in front of your peers for the first time. The words quickly become jumbled as you struggle to piece the sentences together and before long your nerves have taken over. While many students love reading, there’s an equal amount who shy away through fear or wanting to avoid a judging gaze from their peers. But it appears the stigma and nerves associated with reading, especially reading out loud, evaporate for students when they’re asked to read to a Story Dog. Story Dogs are specially trained dogs that sit quietly while children read to them. The dogs don’t judge and they remain calm and focused on the reader. It’s an incredibly simple idea that since its inception in 2009 has swept across the globe with thousands of students now embracing the joys of being able to read at advanced levels. Every week Story Dogs member Trish Jones and her beloved pet Lilly, a rescued Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, visits students at Pottsville Primary School listen to some quality reading. It’s an exciting time for the students, who not only get to interact with a gorgeous dog, but they’re also vastly improving their reading skills. Story Dogs Tweed South Coast Coordinator Marilyn Cameron-Dow said the benefits to children who participate in Story Dogs were enormous. “From the start, when most of them cannot read or only read a little, they end up being confident readers and have gained a lot of self-respect,” she said. Since being established in Murwillumbah in 2009, Story Dogs has grown across Australia and now helps more than 680 children each week in 90 schools from every state and territory except the ACT. Mrs Cameron-Dow said the Story Dogs success was in part due to the dogs ability to calm the reader and enable them to
