“At the moment we are looking for people who might be struggling a bit to pay their energy bills who we will help install energy efficient appliances and other measures, just so we can get an accurate reading of how much they will help.” Ms Clifford said they are also planning a crowdfunding campaign to install solar panels on one of the village’s public buildings with the primary school their main target. “There is still a bit of a way to go in the planning stage but the idea is that any financial savings would be reinvested in educational programs,” she said. The Tyalgum project is just one of a number which have been launched across Australia but is being closely monitored as it is the furthest advanced. Ms Clifford said ART is not in line to benefit directly from the project and is coordinating it mainly to “show it can be done.” “I just believe this is a great opportunity to affect change and nothing compares to what it will mean for my children and grandchildren,” said Ms Clifford. “I grew up in Murwillumbah and it is so encouraging to be able to show our young people you don’t need to be in a big city to do something which really makes a difference. “All of our community meetings so far have been very positive with lots of questions being asked, it is great that people are being encouraged to think about energy and where it comes from.”

Legacy week commences

Ian Campbell

LOCALS WILL be asked to dig deep over the next week to help support the widows of those who fought for our country.

Legacy Week starts on Saturday 29 August when cadets from the 225 ACU Murwillumbah will be selling badges and bears during the Banana Festival parade to raise funds for the 122 widows in the Tweed Valley who receive support from the organisation. Far North Coast Legacy Coordinator Ian Campbell said the organisation is facing new challenges stemming from the high levels of PTSD being suffered by veterans returning from conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. “Legacy and the RSL are working together to assist these families, a number of whom are living in our area,” said Mr Campbell. “The goal of the program, known as the Leesa Program and being driven by a brave Veteran’s wife from Ballina, is to raise awareness of the issues these families are facing. “It is a challenge though as we only have 15 Legatees doing the

work in this area, some of whom are facing the challenges of aging themselves, but we are funding a position for a qualified community welfare officer to tend to needs as they arise.” The Department of Veterans Affairs has revealed the number of Afghanistan Veterans seeking support has trebled in three years with instances of PTSD up 300 per cent since 2012 and 45 per cent in the past year alone. Studies also show high levels of depression, back injuries, alcohol dependency and hearing loss among the 26,000 personnel who served in the Middle East between 2001 and 2014. Mr Campbell said after the weekend Legatees will be stationed at Sunnyside Mall and in Main Street, but the week is about much more than collecting funds. “We will also be having a special luncheon for our ladies on Monday, something we do regularly and which many of them rely on to maintain social connections,” he said. “This community has always been very generous and supportive of our efforts to help our ladies through social activities, luncheons, transport and just maintaining contact with people who are increasingly isolated. “Every dollar donated goes to support the Legacy family and we are just so grateful for the support we receive.”

A Winning Team Murwillumbah Collision Repair Centre can put the smile back on your face. THE most surprising outcome of the wonderful 2015 Business Excellence Award Tweed Shire BEATS Gala evening at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre was that a smart business woman was awarded two years in a row with totally three awards for her Smash Repair business, an industry dominated by men. Nicoletta GM and owner of Murwillumbah Collision Repair Centre MCRC since 2009 said: “Thank you everyone for supporting our team at MCRC.” Tell us, what do these three Business Excellence Awards mean to you? Our team is very happy having been chosen by the Southern Cross University as a Winner; we are honoured to accept these Awards for Excellence and wear the winner’s badge with pride: 2015 Excellence in Work, Health and Safety, sponsored by Work Cover NSW. 2015 Most Accessible and Inclusive Tweed Business, sponsored by Tweed Shire Council. 2014 Best Trade; Award for Excellence. Describe what your business does: MCRC is a One Stop Smash Repair Shop, offering five sections: 1. Smash repairs and spray painting.

2. Mechanical car services and repairs by a local in house mechanic. 3. Towing 24 hours by local towing companies. 4. Crash Data Retrieval – first business in NSW. 5. Car Wash, VAC & tyre shine from $ 35. What do you believe has contributed to your success? MCRC is the biggest, most modern and best equipped smash repair shop in the region. We are the only Recommended Insurance Smash Repairer in the area, working for all insurance companies. We do all Private and Insurance Work, offering Lifetime Warranty on all repairs. Describe your business values: As the industry and market leader our key values are: Professionalism, understanding the needs of our customers, integrity, reliability, honesty - doing only what is in the best interest of our customers. Tell us about your milestone achievements over the past months: 1. First business in the area fully compliant with the National Work Health Safety Act October 2012, Occupational Health and Safety Requirements and Environmental Act.

2. First green smash repairer in the region, with a new, state of the art spray booth, using eco-friendly, water based paint, releasing 85% less emissions in the atmosphere. 3. For the sake of the environment, everything is recycled: All metal e.g. replaced smashed parts; all tyres; all pallets; all cardboards, in the workshop all waste goes in different bins: yellow, red, green and blue. What key lessons have you learned from successfully overcoming difficulties in your business? “There is always a better way”, this is our motto and for this reason we fix things if possible before they occur. Tell us about your partnerships with local business: MCRC work with many local businesses. E.g. last year we bought over $600,000 worth of parts and whatever we can buy locally we do – this is our first commitment. Describe MCRC’s community support: MCRC provides local employment - all our qualified staff are locals. We have two apprentices on site. MCRC

www.tweedvalleyweekly.net.au

offers one week’s work experience for students from year 10 to 12. We are a member of the Murwillumbah District Business Chamber. MCRC is a local business that is a member of the Friends of the Tweed River Art Gallery. Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself, Nicoletta: As an art lover, I volunteer my time at the Art Gallery or sit on the balcony of the café enjoying lovely food and the wonderful view on Mt Warning. Rotary’s prestigious Paul Harris award was presented to me for my community work since 2006 and my assistance with the campaign assisting in the eradication of polio world-wide. With great joy I am volunteering for community work in Murwillumbah as a Rotary member, as well as at the Murwillumbah Catholic Church, the Tyalgum Music Festival, as an Opera and Ballet fan and a Bushwalking Club. I love to laugh; I love nature, walking along the water line of the sea, admiring the beauty and stillness of the starry sky.

Always next year for Gents after loss IN THE final competition match the season the Gentlemen of Murwillumbah aka Bananas went down 26 –17 to the Grafton Redmen.

The loss means the end of the season for the Gents who were in a three way tussle for the final semi final berth. A four try bonus point win was what the Bananas required to advance to the semis and they started out in great fashion. The Redmen the kicked off deep to the Gents with the intention of pinning them down on their line but hard running from the forwards soon had the Gents out of trouble and a long kick from Bronson McDonald put play in the Grafton half. A strong scrum win by the Gents unleashed the backline and winger Josh Harman – Cullen, in a spectacular run, sprinted down the side line and around under the posts. The Bananas second try came soon after when inside centre Graham Dodge stepped past a couple of defenders leaving the Grafton defensive line in disarray. Dodge found plenty of support out wide and the move ended with Brett Underwood touching down in the corner. At 12 nil to the Gents things were right on track but Grafton, to their credit, fought back strongly to go into the break with the score locked at 12 all. The second half saw brutal defense from

This having a good day. Then again, so was the effectively reduced score board pressure

on the Redmen. Also the Grafton backsto-the-wall goal line defense showed great commitment. The match was a very tough encounter and both sides needed their entire reserves bench to maintain numbers on the field. Hardman Nick Reeve played the last 20 minutes with a broken foot and prop Josh Holt (blood bin) reentered the fray at breakway to give his team every chance of victory. Overall there are a number of positives to be taken from this season. Outside centre Jake Harte was equal first in the zone Best and Fairest competition despite missing three games while trapped in Bali by the volcano. No.8 Kane Jardine came in at 5th place with the Gents being the only team with two players in the top ten. Also the Gents young brigade of Jem Macdonald, Tom Byrnes and Bronson McDonald were outstanding at the senior level. The whole team were more fit than in previous seasons due to the excellent physical training by Rick Watson of Crossfit Murwilumbah. Added to this Graham Dodge has helped the team develop a new and more attractive style of play which I hope they will carry over into next season.

History as Vulcans to host first ever Preliminary Finals

It’s down to the pointy end of the Sherrin, sorry, season for the Northern Rivers AFL Junior competition. Last Sunday the Casino Lions hosted semi finals for the u/12, u14 & u16’s. After finishing third on the ladder at the completion of the home & away games, The mighty Murwillumbah Vulcans u12’s took on the Lions at their home ground for the right to play in the Preliminary Finals this Sunday. After going down to the Lions last time they met the Vulcans were primed for a big effort, and didn’t they produce one! After a fierce first quarter only one point separated the teams. The Vulcans then upped the ante with ferocious tackling and pinpoint passing to run out convincing winners 11-13-79 to

3-1-19 to give the club their first ever finals victory. This Sunday Murwillumbah is privileged play host to three Preliminary finals at John Rabjones Oval. The mighty Vulcans u12 are first up against Byron Bay Magpies at 9am, followed by u14 Tweed Tigers V Lismore Swans at 10:30am with final u16 game between the Byron Bay Magpies and Ballina Bombers rounding out the day at 12pm. With the Vulcans on fire, take the opportunity and get yourself down to the ‘Inferno’ and cheer our boys on as they play for the chance to be in the grand final. It’s sure to be a day of quality junior AFL and the Vulcans have big plans to make it a day to remember.

Caba’s Big Bang On Again In October Well they say it is the contest where you have to show up and blow-up, Cabba’s Big Bang surf contest is on the weekend of the 24th and 25th of October, at Cabarita Headland. There will be a tonne of prizes and cash up for grabs, and the entries will fill fast. Divisions will be open (48 places), Juniors (32) and Open Women (16). The format is one designed to reflect performance, not safety, all contestants will have to go for it to take the event down. Every year the field fills quickly, so if you are after an entry, go to the Cabarita Boardriders website, or contact Donna Wilson at – DonnaLWilson@ hotmail.com Helmeted Warrior Flores Takes Out TeaupooDesousa Holds Ratings Lead

Only a month or so from head surgery and a fractured skull from a surfing accident in Indonesia, Frenchman Jeremy Flores has taken out the Billabong Pro in Teaupoo, Tahiti. Flores was in form the whole event wearing a surfing helmet to protect his head, and went against his doctor’s orders in surfing what some say is the most dangerous event on the World Tour. This is the second event win for Flores, his other win at arguably another of the most dangerous events in the World, The Pipeline Masters back in 2010. The ratings have really tightened up now, Desousa carrying the yellow leader’s jersey to Trestles for the next event from 9th to the 20th of September. Mick Fanning is still holding onto 2nd place behind Desousa, Owen Wright has moved up to 3rd, with Julian Wilson 4th, Filipe Toledo 5th, and Kelly Slater 6th. When it comes to Trestles, Toledo, Wilson, and Slater are favourites at this break, along with 2014 Champion Medina and the rest of the Brazillian crew. But don’t count Mick Fanning out, he will be locked and loaded to fire. Gilmore Comes Back to the Tour Although a World Title is out of the question for Kingscliff super-girl Stephanie Gilmore, it looks like she will be back in action in the US in 2 weeks for the Trestles event. After fracturing her leg in warm up for completion all the way back at Margaret River in March, Gilmore should be chomping at the bit to make her presence know around the tour. She won Trestles last year and is sure to rattle some cages.
