Full steam ahead for Rail Trail push THE DECISION of the NSW Government to may have swayed the decision is the continuing
As reported in the Tweed Valley Weekly last week the short trail between Tumbarumba and Rosewood, with an estimated cost of about $5 million, was selected as the first choice over the $42 million Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) project. Tweed Shire Councillor Barry Longland, an appointee to the NRRT board, said they came away from a meeting in Sydney last week with high level officials from Infrastructure NSW feeling confident they will be successful with a revised bid.
The government is well aware of the economic benefits of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail which stack up much better for this area than the numbers for the southern trail they have approved. “The message we got was that as a pilot project the Tumbarumba trail was a more attractive option because it was smaller, significantly less expensive as it didn’t involve rebuilding bridges and only involved dealing with one local government area,” said Cr Longland. “We were disappointed at the announcement for sure but one message we did get was that there is a strong level of support in the government for rail trails and they see this as just the beginning.” The NRRT proposes a rail trail following the route of the Casino to Murwillumbah railway, closed in 2004, which has the backing of Tweed, Byron, Lismore and Richmond Councils. Cr Longland said one of the other factors which
push for the return of trains to the line from within Byron Council, a move which may see the Tweed push forward with a separate bid for the first stage of the project between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek. “One of the things which obviously worked against us was the sheer size and complexity of the project and we came away with the feeling that if we break it up into smaller pieces it might be more attractive,” said Cr Longland. “Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek is a 25km stretch with an estimated cost of about $13 million and is something which would be much more likely to get traction. “The government is well aware of the economic benefits of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail which stack up much better for this area than the numbers for the southern trail they have approved. “With the sale of poles and wires in the state the Government has set aside $300 million for regional tourist infrastructure so the funding is there, we’re now just waiting on direction from (Regional Development Minister) John Barilaro’s office.” Meanwhile Councillors at their June meeting have formally tied the future of development at the Murwillumbah train station to the rail trail project. A report looking into potential community and cultural uses for the station was presented at the meeting, which concluded the facilities were inadequate for use as meeting, exhibition, performance or rehearsal spaces. Council’s Director of Engineering David Oxenham said the Casino to Murwillumbah Rail Trail Study highlights the potential future use of the station for rail trail associated businesses such as cycle hire and repair, cafes and Wi-Fi hubs for tourists. “Ultimately these are state owned facilities so it’s not Council’s role to make the final decision,” said Mr Oxenham. “The vision is for the station to be an active space, being at one end of the proposed trail, and it is proposed the rental income from the businesses there be used to help maintain the trail.”

We will be retaining the publication throughout the month in the form of a lift out which will also be available in the venues for you to collect and of course each edition is on the clubs website at www. twintowns.com.au. NSW CLUBS AND COMMUNITY AWARDS In May I had the pleasure of attending the 2015 Clubs and Community Awards night put on by ClubsNSW in conjunction with some forty Corporate Partners held at Fox Studios in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs attended by approximately nine hundred guests including the Premier and a vast array of our state political leaders. The comradery and mateship shown by the Diggers for their comrades ZKLOVW XQGHU Č´ UH ZDV HYHQ more remarkable and this wonderful relationship endured amongst the men after they returned to Australia. The need to maintain a bond and provide support for the returned servicemen led to the formation of the Returned Soldiers Association. In June 1916 this Association was reformed as The Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). The men of the small towns of Tweed Heads and Coolangatta had joined the Č´ JKW GXULQJ ::, IRU GLYHUVH reasons, however, upon their return to the country they were united by their strong values of mateship and support which they were determined to put to good use. This they could do by forming their own branch of the newly created RSSILA.
Under the supervision of the Queensland State Branch of the RSSILA the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Sub-Branch was formed in 1918. The men who went away to war were not always the same on their return and a large number of men were the worse for their experience. Many men however returned home with ideas and enthusiasm and were keen to make a contribution to their community’s progress and development. They wanted to help their less fortunate mates who endured temporary or permanent physical and mental disability, or who simply found themselves down on their luck. Before the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta RSSILA Sub-Branch was formed, accommodation and care was provided by the Church of England Help Society which established the Soldiers’ Church of England Rest Home at Rainbow Bay in Coolangatta. DIGGERS SWIMMING Yes, winter is here, but the temperature of the water at the Oasis Pools is lovely since the new heating system was installed. So agreeable in fact, that several swimmers remain in the water between their races as it’s warmer in than out. Many of our members also belong to the Aqua ducks swimming club who hit the water shortly after Diggers exit the pool. Both clubs welcome new members of either gender and any swimming standard, as all races are run on a handicap system. As long as you can swim 30 metres, you’re in! You can even swim with us on a couple of Sundays (turn up at 8.15am) before making a decision on joining the club by paying a low joining fee. Our next away meet is in November at the lovely little town of Bellingen. Unfortunately, accommodation is in short supply. Bubbles

TWIN TOWNS SHAPING OUTCOMES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION Twin Towns and its DÉ&#x; OLDWHG SKLODQWKURSLF association, the Twin Towns Services Community Foundation, continue their ongoing commitment to SURYLGH Č´ QDQFLDO VXSSRUW on behalf of members to important local community organisations such as Shaping Outcomes. Since inception in 1981, Shaping Outcomes at Tweed Heads, formerly known as Tweed Valley Early Childhood Intervention Service Inc, has been the EHQHČ´ FLDU\ RI IXQGV IURP Twin Towns and the Twin Towns Services Community Foundation. Over the years, Twin Towns KDV GRQDWHG VLJQLČ´ FDQWO\ WR ensure this much-needed community organisation continues to maintain, enhance and expand services for local families with children from birth to six years who have developmental delays or disabilities. Last year, Twin Towns donated $15,000 and Twin Towns Services Community Foundation donated $20,000. This valued support was utilised by TVEI to assist families in the Tweed Shire who are in need of support for children with disabilities or developmental delays. Previous donations were utilised for managing the demand/waitlist program,
which provided families with a Key Worker Specialist to ensure positive emotional support for the family, information and advice in navigating services and understanding professional terminology, provide opportunities to identify and address their individual needs as well as support in developing skills in advocating for the needs of their child. The latest donation of $20,000 from the Twin Towns Community Foundation in June 2015 will enable the organisation to welcome an additional 20 local families, who have been on the Centre’s ever growing waiting list and are desperately in need of support and assistance. Community Relations Manager from Shaping Outcomes, Jackson Ross, said the $20,000 donation from Twin Towns would help his organisation provide more individualised early intervention programs that increase the abilities of children and build on their strengths. “Shaping Outcomes assists children and their families through its promotion of lifelong learning, positive participation and family quality of life, said Jackson. “This donation means that our staff can now provide services to families who
have been on our wait list for some time. These families will soon be empowered to make relevant adjustments to their current situation to optimise important developmental milestones. “We offer families individualised service and programs designed to identify their child’s strengths, needs and goals. We also ensure they have access to any additional services they require to achieve these goals.
“Shaping Outcomes thanks Twin Towns Community Foundation for its ongoing association, financial support and dedication to our crucial early childhood intervention service, he said. Shaping Outcomes offers access to therapists, educational programs, care preschools, day and transition-to-school programs. The Centre also provides parent-to-parent support services, ‘My Time’, a dads and grandfathers group, and Jarjums Playgroup for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. Many local children and infants, along with their families, currently attend Shaping Outcomes which is located near the Tweed Heads Hospital. Here, parents receive educational information and the tools they need to
deal with the challenges that accompany development delays and disabilities. Without this service, many would have no support to help them understand the situation and improve quality of life and future learning potential for their child. Chairman of the Twin Towns Community Foundation and Twin Towns Board Director, David Phillips, said the Club and the Foundation had a long term association with the Centre and it was gratifying to see the results achieved by this local community organisation. “It is even more gratifying to know that Twin Towns has played an important role over so many years in enabling Shaping Outcomes to expand their services to meet the ever-increasing number of families that need their expert assistance and advice.
“There is a growing dependency within our local community, and others across Australia, to provide services that assist parents raising their children, and we are especially aware of the additional challenges facing parents of children with disabilities, he said.
“If Twin Towns can assist Shaping Outcomes to LQFUHDVH WKH FRQČ´ GHQFH DQG self-esteem of these children and provide platforms for learning and development that may otherwise have been out of reach, this is something all members of Twin Towns should be proud of,â€? said David.
“Without our members, there would be no Twin Towns! Without the support of Twin Towns, many of these community organisations would be unable to continue their VLJQLČ´ FDQW ZRUN ZLWKLQ the community or would be limited in their ability to expand or cope with the demands of our growing population,â€? he said. Each year, Twin Towns Community Foundation receives an overwhelming number of requests for Č´ QDQFLDO VXSSRUW IURP community organisations, charities, sporting and social club groups. Members of the Foundation meet on a regular basis to review and determine outcomes for all applications based on merit and value within the local community. Over the past year, Twin Towns has fostered a spirit of community giving through its ClubGrants scheme as well as the Community Foundation. Recipients have included many community organisations, such as surf-
lifesaving and sporting clubs, pre-schools and primary schools, youth services, Salvation Army appeals and Kids In Need, to name just a few.
In 2014, Twin Towns grants totalled $1.4 million and the Twin Towns Services Community Fund contributed an additional WR Č´ QDQFLDOO\ support junior sport, charitable organisations and medical research. In May this year, Twin Towns donated $10,000 via Rotary to relief work underway in Nepal. The money is currently being used by Rotary aid workers in the stricken country to buy tarpaulins, mattresses, medicines and other necessities to help families left homeless and traumatised by the event. In March, Twin Towns donated $50,000 via Rotary to assist with relief work in Vanuatu after Cyclone Pam caused widespread destruction in the island nation. Can’t keep this good man down The People You Meet...
with Fran Rabbitts GRAEME HUNT was an interstate truckie for 30 years, free as a bird, his theme song Willy Nelson’s ‘On the Road Again’. Now he lies in Murwillumbah Hospital paralysed from his chest down.
“My life changed on March 26, 2014 at 10pm in Sydney,” said Mr Hunt. “I was home and heard noises like gunshots and voices from a car parked opposite, I saw someone there and deciding to investigate called out ‘is everything alright? “The next thing I heard a bang and found myself on the ground. I’d been shot. I tried desperately to move but I couldn’t. “There was no feeling from my chest down. That night was the last time I walked, and I will never walk again.” This attack was publicised in Sydney’s newspapers and TV channels, three people were charged and are due in court in September. Prior to this he’d planned to sell up and move to the Tweed and now with his life radically changed and unable to work, Sydney was too expensive so he sold his house and brought his plans forward to move to the Tweed. “In Sydney I’ve been in several major hospitals and every option available was
Graeme Hunt explored but the diagnosis remained unchanged,” said Mr Hunt. “Now I’m planning for my future to live independently on the Tweed in my own home as before, except now in a wheelchair.” As a truckie he made many friends, some living on the Tweed, and they kept him
advised on properties for sale including the one he bought at Banora Point. The location and size was right and presently it’s being modified for his special needs. Just down the hill is Twin Towns Sports Club and Swimming Centre with a heated pool, and already Graeme has plans to swim regularly and get involved in the

water sports available. Already he’s talking about wheelchair rugby, basketball and other wheelchair sports, and then there’s the Tweed River for kayaking. With this new chapter opening in his life he’s hoping that the challenges he meets in exploring what is possible will be an encouragement to others who are prepared to give it a go and rise above their disabilities. His positive outlook is a credit to the caring and intuitive core staff at the Murwillumbah Rehab Unit who he can’t praise enough. “They gave me so much love and care in spite of working under the constant duress of savage funding cuts to disabilities by Government decision makers,” said Mr Hunt. “But through their skills the shattered are given hope and lives are changed because they work with you to help you towards independent living. “Now with the funding slashed many like me are finding it harder to access services critical to their rehabilitation. For me their expert care was a major factor in my recovery and independence.” His life is focused on positive changes, and he’s researching how the present Government’s policy affects people like him and whether reforms are needed. “There isn’t one rule that fits all, of concern is the legislation concerning home services and the underlying criteria that determines how policy makers arrive at funding for the seriously disabled, most who’d prefer support to live independently at home,” he said. He is looking forward to a future as an Advocate Volunteer and conduit for information for the disabled, while at Banora Point his new home, car and independent life as a supporter of those who need a helping hand to get ‘On the Road Again.’
