Volunteer newsletter July 2010

Often we don’t stop and take the time to say thank you to the key people that make things happen! Thank you to all the Twelve25 Volunteers! Last financial year volunteers contributed in excess of 2871 hours to the running of Twelve25. Economically this is worth a lot to the City of Salisbury. A Queensland based researcher, Professor Duncan Ironmonger recently calculated the average economic value of a volunteers contribution to be $22.08 per hour! That means that for Twelve25, volunteers have contributed a value of more than $ 63,391 for the 2009 / 2010 financial year.

Outcomes for volunteers

Volunteer Training

Recently we were lucky enough to have a few dollars to support some accredited manual handling training. Generally the basic training I will support, where possible, includes :-

Basic First Aid

Child Training

Safe

Environment

• Communication and Conflict Resolution • Basic safety •

concepts

of

food

Manual handling

Evacuation and basic fire extinguisher use We have also recently supported volunteers through the RPL for Cert III in Active Volunteering. In the following pages is a series of training opportunities that our volunteers can tap into. Please touch base with Paula if you are interested.

The ‘Getting Your P’s’ program is getting up an running shortly. As part of that program we will be engaging some volunteer mentors to mentor young people ‘in car’. So if you have had you full licence (unrestricted) for at least 2 years, have a great driving record, clean police criminal check and are keen to mentor young people (in one of our cars!) - then we may have a roll for you. The volunteers would need to commit to a four hour block (3 hours in car) and will receive a meal / travel allowance. Do you know someone who may be interested? Get them to email me on rhenke@salisbury.sa.gov.au

Volunteer Rostering, recruitment, recognition events and support! Paula Edwards is the key contact at Twelve25 for these roles. She has the challenge of maintaining enough work for volunteers and enough volunteers for the work! Paula can be contacted on 82539928 or pedwards@salisbury.sa.gov.au

Basketball Ring in Backyard For those that haven't seen the basketball ring in the backyard is fully functional as a break out space and is being well used (Thanks to the Eliz. Bluelight Committee for their financial support) Lockers Twelve25 also now has 8 lockers in the office for staff and volunteer use and 12 lockers opposite the disabled toilet for participants to use (Thanks to Salisbury Rotary for their financial support).

Thanks again Rick Henke, Centre Manager
